Abstract
In this minireview we survey the challenges and strategies in gold redox catalysis. Gold's reluctance to oxidative addition reactions due to its high redox potential limits its applicability. Initial attempts to overcome this problem focused on the use of sacrificial external oxidants in stoichiometric amounts to bring Au(I) compounds to Au(III) reactive species. Recently, innovative approaches focused on employing hemilabile ligands, which are capable of coordinating to Au(I) and stabilizing square-planar Au(III) intermediates, thus facilitating oxidative addition steps and enabling oxidant-free catalysis. Notable examples include the use of the (P^N) bidendate MeDalphos ligand to achieve various cross-coupling reactions via oxidative addition Au(I)/Au(III). Importantly, hemilabile ligand-enabled catalysis allows merging oxidative addition with π-activation, such as oxy- and aminoarylation of alkenols and alkenamines using organohalides, expanding gold's versatility in C-C and C-heteroatom bond formations and unprecedented cyclizations. Moreover, recent advancements in enantioselective catalysis using chiral hemilabile (P^N) ligands are also surveyed. Strikingly, versatile bidentate (C^N) hemilabile ligands as competitors of MeDalphos have appeared recently, by designing scaffolds where phosphine groups are substituted by N-heterocyclic or mesoionic carbenes. Overall, these approaches highlight the evolving landscape of gold redox catalysis and its tremendous potential in a broad scope of transformations.

Abstract
In bromido-(pyrrolidine-κN)gold(I) bis-(pyrrolidine-κN)gold(I) bromide, [AuBr(pyr)]·[Au(pyr)2]Br (pyr = pyrrolidine, C4H9N), 2, alternating [AuBr(pyr)] mol-ecules and [Au(pyr)2]+ cations are connected by aurophilic contacts to form infinite chains of residues parallel to the b axis. The chains are cross-linked by three N-H⋯Br- hydrogen bonds and an Au⋯Br contact to form a layer structure parallel to the ab plane. Tri-chlorido-(piperidine-κN)gold(III), [AuCl3(pip)] (pip = piperidine, C5H11N), 3, consists of mol-ecules with the expected square-planar coordination at the gold atom, which are connected by an N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bond and an Au⋯Cl contact to form a layer structure parallel to the ac plane. The structures of bis-(piperidinium) tetra-chlorido-aurate(III) chloride, (pipH)2[AuCl4]Cl, 4, and bis-(pyrrolidinium) tetra-bromido-aurate(III) bromide, (pyrH)2[AuBr4]Br, 6, are closely related but not isotypic. Compound 6 crystallizes in space group Ibam; the Au and two Br atoms of the anion lie in the mirror plane x, y, 0, whereas the bromide ions occupy special positions 0, 0.5, 0 and 0, 0.5, 0.25, with site symmetry 2/m. The NH2 group forms a hydrogen bond to one bromide ion, and also a three-centre hydrogen bond to the other bromide atom and to a metal-bonded Br atom. The packing involves chains of hydrogen-bonded pyrrolidinium and bromide ions parallel to the c axis, combined with a layer structure of [AuBr4]- and bromide anions, parallel to the ab plane and involving Au⋯Br and Br⋯Br contacts. Compound 4, however, crystallizes pseudosymmetrically in space group Iba2; two chlorine atoms of the anion lie on the twofold axis 0.5, 0.5, z, and there are two independent cations. The packing is closely similar to that of 6, but there are no N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds to metal-bonded chlorines. The contact distances Au⋯Cl are appreciably longer than their Au⋯Br counterparts in 6, whereas the Cl⋯Cl contact is much shorter than Br⋯Br in 6. Tri-bromido-(piperidine-κN)gold(III) crystallizes as its di-chloro-methane solvate, [AuBr3(pip)]·CH2Cl2, 7. It too displays a square-planar coordination at the gold atom. The packing involves hydrogen bonds N-H⋯Br, stacking of neighbouring AuBr3 units by Au⋯Br contacts, and a short Br⋯Br contact; these combine to form a layer structure parallel to the ac plane.

Abstract
Herein, we describe efficient nanogold-catalyzed cycloisomerization reactions of alkynoic acids and allenynamides to enol lactones and dihydropyrroles, respectively (the latter via an Alder-ene reaction). The gold nanoparticles were immobilized on thiol-functionalized microcrystalline cellulose and characterized by electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and by XPS. The thiol-stabilized gold nanoparticles (Au0) were obtained in the size range 1.5-6 nm at the cellulose surface. The robust and sustainable cellulose-supported gold nanocatalyst can be recycled for multiple cycles without losing activity.

Novel NHC-Based Au(I) Complexes as Precursors of Highly Pure Au(0) Nuggets under Oxidative Conditions. Molecules 2023; 28:molecules28052302. Abstract
The Lewis-acidic character and robustness of NHC-Au(I) complexes enable them to catalyze a large number of reactions, and they are enthroned as the catalysts of choice for many transformations among polyunsaturated substrates. More recently, Au(I)/Au(III) catalysis has been explored either by utilizing external oxidants or by seeking oxidative addition processes with catalysts featuring pendant coordinating groups. Herein, we describe the synthesis and characterization of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-based Au(I) complexes, with and without pendant coordinating groups, and their reactivity in the presence of different oxidants. We demonstrate that when using iodosylbenzene-type oxidants, the NHC ligand undergoes oxidation to afford the corresponding NHC=O azolone products concomitantly with quantitative gold recovery in the form of Au(0) nuggets ~0.5 mm in size. The latter were characterized by SEM and EDX-SEM showing purities above 90%. This study shows that NHC-Au complexes can follow decomposition pathways under certain experimental conditions, thus challenging the believed robustness of the NHC-Au bond and providing a novel methodology to produce Au(0) nuggets.

Abstract
The immobilization of homogeneous catalysts onto supports to improve recyclability while maintaining catalytic efficiency is often a trial-and-error process limited by poor control of the local catalyst environment and few strategies to append catalysts to support materials. Here, we introduce a modular heterogenous catalysis platform that addresses these challenges. Our approach leverages the well-defined interiors of self-assembled Pd12L24 metal-organic cages/polyhedra (MOCs): simple mixing of a catalyst-ligand of choice with a polymeric ligand, spacer ligands, and a Pd salt induces self-assembly of Pd12L24-cross-linked polymer gels featuring endohedrally catalyst-functionalized junctions. Semi-empirical calculations show that catalyst incorporation into the MOC junctions of these materials has minimal affect on the MOC geometry, giving rise to well-defined nanoconfined catalyst domains as confirmed experimentally using several techniques. Given the unique network topology of these freestanding gels, they are mechanically robust regardless of their endohedral catalyst composition, allowing them to be physically manipulated and transferred from one reaction to another to achieve multiple rounds of catalysis. Moreover, by decoupling the catalyst environment (interior of MOC junctions) from the physical properties of the support (the polymer matrix), this strategy enables catalysis in environments where homogeneous catalyst analogues are not viable, as demonstrated for the Au(I)-catalyzed cyclization of 4-pentynoic acid in aqueous media.

Abstract
Oxidant-free Au-catalyzed reactions are emerging as a new synthetic tool for innovative organic transformations. Oxidant-free Au-catalyzed reactions are emerging as a new synthetic tool for innovative organic transformations. Still, a deeper mechanistic understanding is needed for a rational design of these processes. Here we describe the synthesis of two Au(i) complexes bearing bidentated hemilabile MIC^N ligands, [AuI(MIC^N)Cl], and their ability to stabilize square-planar Au(iii) species (MIC = mesoionic carbene). The presence of the hemilabile N-ligand contributed to stabilize the ensuing Au(iii) species acting as a five-membered ring chelate upon its coordination to the metal center. The Au(iii) complexes can be obtained either by using external oxidants or, alternatively, by means of feasible oxidative addition with strained biphenylene Csp2–Csp2 bonds as well as with aryl iodides. Based on the fundamental knowledge gained on the redox properties on these Au(i)/Au(iii) systems, we successfully develop a novel Au(i)-catalytic procedure for the synthesis of γ-substituted γ-butyrolactones through the arylation-lactonization reaction of the corresponding γ-alkenoic acid. The oxidative addition of the aryl iodide, which in turn is allowed by the hemilabile nature of the MIC^N ligand, is an essential step for this transformation. A novel hemilabile MIC^N ligand-based Au(i)-catalytic procedure for the synthesis of γ-substituted γ-butyrolactones through the arylation-lactonization reaction of the corresponding γ-alkenoic acid is presented.![]()

Abstract
The field of gold catalysis has been in constant expansion during the last twenty years. Based on the precept of π-activation of unsaturated simple substrates, several new rearrangements have been discovered, implying aryl, alkyne, alkene or keto derivatives as key partners. In this personal account, the main contributions in the field of gold catalysis from our group will be highlighted, emphasizing the recent reports, starting from 1,6- and 1,5-enynes and then moving to keto-ynes derivatives. The gold-catalyzed reactions will be presented starting from classical skeletal rearrangements (cycloisomerization) and then domino processes. In each part, the presentation of asymmetric versions will be highlighted.

Abstract
Since the dawn of millennium, catalytic gold chemistry is at the forefront to set off diverse organic reactions via unique activation of π-bonded molecules. Within this purview, cycloisomerization of heteroatom nucleophiles linked to a π-system is one of the well recognized chemistry for the construction of numerous heterocyclic cores. Though the rudimentary aspects of this transformation are reviewed by several groups in different timeline, a holistic view on regiochemistry of such reactions went largely overlooked. Hence, this account emphasizes the gold catalyzed regioselective cycloisomerization of structurally distinctive π-connected hetero-nucleophiles leading to different heterocycles documented in the last two decades. From an application perspective, this account also highlights those methodologies which find a role in the total synthesis of natural products. Wherever appropriate, mechanistic details and contributing factors for selectivity are also discussed.

Abstract
Five pairs of novel chiral alcohol functionalised gold(i) and gold(iii) NHC complexes derived from chiral amino alcohols, were synthesized and characterised (NMR, IR, HRMS). Single crystal X-ray diffraction data of gold(i) and gold(iii) complexes are reported and discussed. The chiral imidazolium preligands were readily synthesized via the oxalamides, subsequent reduction and final orthoformate condensation. An improved method was used for generation of gold(i) NHC complexes (up to 92%) and further oxidation afforded the corresponding gold(iii) NHC complexes (up to 99%). All the Au(i) and Au(iii) NHC complexes proved far more catalytically active in a 1,6-enyne alkoxycyclization test reaction than our previously tested N,N- and P,N-ligated Au(iii) complexes. Comparative gold(i) and gold(iii) catalytic studies demonstrated different catalytic ability, depending on the NHC ligand flexibility and bulkiness. Excellent yields (92-99%) of target alkoxycyclization product were obtained with both gold(i) and gold(iii) complexes with the bulky N1-Mes-N2-ethanol based NHC ligand.

Abstract
Novel approach with amide-tethered H-bond donor NHC ligands enabled Au(i)-catalysis via H-bonding. The plain NHC-Au(i)-Cl complex catalysed conversions of terminal N-propynamides to oxazolines, and enyne cycloisomerization with an acid additive, in DCM at RT. DFT calculations enlightened the function of the side-arm in the activation.

Abstract
The first total synthesis of juniperanol, the tricyclic sesquiterpenoid enantiomer of α-cedrol is described. The synthesis relies on stereoselective gold-catalyzed Ohloff-type propargylic ester rearrangement performed on a 10 g scale, and a carbocationic cascade in the presence of acetyl methanesulfonate. The ability of juniperanol to interfere in glucose processes in different cell types is described.

Abstract
Four novel dinuclear Ag(i) and Au(i) NHC complexes bearing two 2,2-acetate-bridged bisimidazolylidene ligands (R = Me and iPr) of zwitterionic and metallacyclic forms are reported. The functionalized methylene bridge of the ligands leads to water soluble complexes, which have been characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction in the case of La-H2-PF6, Ag2(La)2, Ag2(Lb)2 and Au2(La)2. Dimerization processes caused by hydrogen bonding or Ag(i)-carboxylate interactions in the solid state were observed for La-H2-PF6 and Ag2(La)2. DOSY NMR experiments confirmed that both bisimidazolium salts appear as dimers in aqueous solutions, in contrast to the corresponding monomeric Ag(i) and Au(i) complexes. Both gold(i) complexes form syn- and anti-isomers analogous to the reference coinage metal-based complexes. Protonation studies of the syn-isomer gold(i) complex Au2(La)2 were successful, whereas post-modification esterification or amidation reactions were not feasible. Additionally, decarboxylation reactions (thermally induced Krapcho- or oxidative Hunsdiecker-type) of the bisimidazolium salts were observed. Thus, the proximity of the carboxyl moiety to imidazolium/imidazolylidene rings seems to negatively affect stability and reactivity.

Abstract
The viability of building artificial metabolic pathways within a cell will depend on our ability to design biocompatible and orthogonal catalysts capable of achieving non-natural transformations. In this context, transition metal complexes offer unique possibilities to develop catalytic reactions that do not occur in nature. However, translating the potential of metal catalysts to living cells poses numerous challenges associated to their biocompatibility, and their stability and reactivity in crowded aqueous environments. Here we report a gold-mediated C-C bond formation that occurs in complex aqueous habitats, and demonstrate that the reaction can be translated to living mammalian cells. Key to the success of the process is the use of designed, water-activatable gold chloride complexes. Moreover, we demonstrate the viability of achieving the gold-promoted process in parallel with a ruthenium-mediated reaction, inside living cells, and in a bioorthogonal and mutually orthogonal manner.

Abstract
In this critical review the reactivity patterns observed with different types of diyne substrates in gold catalysis are discussed. Apart from the many examples from homogeneous catalysis, the few examples from heterogeneous gold catalysis are also included. With a proper arrangement of the two alkynes unique and exciting reactivity patterns like 1,3-carbonyl transpositions, carbene transfer reactions, cascade annulations, macrocyclisations or the formation of gold vinylidene intermediates are observed. These reactions are of interest for organic synthesis, for pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry and for material science.
