Atmospheric oxidation of vinyl and allyl acetate: product distribution and mechanisms of the OH-initiated degradation in the presence and absence of NO(x)

Gas-Phase Kinetics of a Series of cis-3-Hexenyl Esters with OH Radicals under Simulated Atmospheric Conditions

The present relative kinetic study reports on the experimentally determined gas-phase reaction rate coefficients of OH radicals with a series of seven cis-3-hexenyl esters. The experiments were carried out in the environmental simulation chamber made of quartz from the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iasi (ESC-Q-UAIC), Romania, at a temperature of (298 ± 2) K and a total air pressure of (1000 ± 10) mbar. In situ long-path Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to monitor cis-3-hexenyl formate (Z3HF, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)H), cis-3-hexenyl acetate (Z3HAc, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)CH3), cis-3-hexenyl isobutyrate (Z3HiB, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)CH(CH3)2), cis-3-hexenyl 3-methylbutanoate (Z3H3MeB, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)CH2CH(CH3)2), cis-3-hexenyl hexanoate (Z3HH, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)(CH2)4CH3), cis-3-hexenyl cis-3-hexenoate (Z3HZ3H, (Z,Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)CH2CH═CHCH2CH3), cis-3-hexenyl benzoate (Z3HBz, (Z)-CH3CH2CH═CH(CH2)2OC(O)C6H5), and the reference compounds. The following reaction rate coefficients (in 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1) were obtained for the OH radical-initiated gas-phase oxidation of cis-3-hexenyl esters: (4.13 ± 0.45) for Z3HF, (4.19 ± 0.38) for Z3HAc, (4.84 ± 0.39) for Z3HiB, (5.39 ± 0.61) for Z3H3MeB, (7.00 ± 0.56) for Z3HH, (10.58 ± 1.40) for Z3HZ3H, and (3.41 ± 0.28) for Z3HBz. The results are discussed in terms of hexenyl ester reactivity and compared with the available literature data and structure-activity relationship (SAR) estimates. The atmospheric implications based on the average lifetimes of the investigated cis-3-hexenyl esters are discussed in the present study. The gas-phase rate coefficients for OH radical reactions are given herein for the first time for cis-3-hexenyl isobutyrate, cis-3-hexenyl 3-methylbutanoate, cis-3-hexenyl hexanoate cis-3-hexenyl cis-3-hexenoate, and cis-3-hexenyl benzoate. The newly determined gas-phase reaction rate coefficients provide new information for existing kinetic databases and contribute to the further development of SAR methodologies useful for predicting the reactivity of oxygenated volatile organic compounds.

OH-initiated degradation of methyl 2-chloroacetoacetate and ethyl 2-chloroacetoacetate: Kinetics, products and mechanisms at 298 K and atmospheric pressure

Rate coefficients for the gas-phase reactions of OH radicals with CH₃C(O)CHClC(O)OCH₃ (k₁) and CH₃C(O)CHClC(O)OCH₂CH₃ (k₂) were measured using the relative technique with different reference compounds. The experiments were performed at (298 ± 2) K and 750 Torr of nitrogen or synthetic air by in situ FTIR spectroscopy and GC-FID chromatography. The following rate coefficients (in units of cm³molecule^-1 s^-1) were obtained: k_1FTIR= (2.70 ± 0.51) × 10^-11; k_1GC-FID= (2.30 ± 0.71) × 10^-11 and k_2FTIR= (3.37 ± 0.62) × 10^-11; k_2GC-FID= (3.26 ± 0.85) × 10^-11. This work reports the first kinetic study for the reactions of OH radicals with the mentioned chloroacetoacetates. Additionally, product studies are reported in similar conditions of the kinetic experiments. Acetic acid, acetaldehyde, formyl chloride, and methyl 2-chloro-2-oxoacetate were positively identified and quantified as degradation products. According to the identified products, atmospheric chemical mechanisms were proposed. The environmental implications of these reactions were assessed by the tropospheric lifetimes calculations of the title chloroesters. Significant average ozone production of 4.16 ppm for CH₃C(O)CHClC(O)OCH₃ and 5.98 ppm for CH₃C(O)CHClC(O)OCH₂CH_3, respectively were calculated.

Molecular-Weight Growth in Ozone-Initiated Low-Temperature Oxidation of Methyl Crotonate

We report experiments of ozone-initiated low-temperature oxidation of methyl crotonate (MC, CH₃-CH═CH-C(O)OCH₃) from 420 to 660 K in a near-atmospheric-pressure jet-stirred reactor using photoionization molecular-beam mass spectrometry as a sampling technique. In this temperature regime, no typical low-temperature combustion (LTC) reactions have been observed for MC when oxygen (O₂) is used as the oxidizer. Upon ozone addition, significant oxidation of methyl crotonate is found. On the basis of experimentally observed energy-dependent mass peaks in combination with temperature-dependent mole fraction profiles and photoionization efficiency curves, we provide new insights into the methyl crotonate ozonolysis reaction network. The observed MC + O₃ products, C₅H₈O₅, are found to be related to the keto-hydroperoxides resulting from the isomerization of the primary ozonide. Evidence is also provided that molecular growth mainly results from cycloaddition reactions of the Criegee intermediate into aldehydes and alkenes as well as addition reactions of the Criegee intermediates to the double bond of methyl crotonate and sequential decomposition into ketones. Furthermore, species that contribute in large amounts to the low-temperature oxidation of methyl crotonate, like H₂O₂, CH₃OOH, CH₃OH, and HC(O)OH, are identified, and their mole fractions are reported. Additionally, preliminary modeling is performed which qualitatively captures the observed NTC behavior and reveals future research opportunities.

Unexpectedly High Levels of Organic Compounds Released by Indoor Photocatalytic Paints

Photocatalytic paints based on titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles represent a promising treatment technology for cleaning the air at our dwellings. A few studies have shown that instead of elimination of harmful indoor air pollutants the production of carbonyl compounds occurs from the photocatalytic paints. Herein, we report unexpectedly high concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released upon irradiation of photocatalytic paints which are meant to clean the air at our dwellings. The concentrations of the VOCs were measured continuously and online by PTR-ToF-MS (Proton Transfer Reaction-Time of Flight-Mass Spectrometry) connected to a well-established flow tube photoreactor. The PTR-ToF-MS analysis revealed the presence of 52 ions in the mass range between 20 and 490 amu, among which 43 have been identified. In particular very high emission rates were estimated of two relevant indoor air pollutants, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde as 355 μg h^-1 and 257 μg h^-1 for 1 m², respectively. We suggest a detailed reaction mechanism responsible for the production of these harmful indoor air pollutants (formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, among the others). The hydroxyl radicals (OH) formed upon activation of TiO₂, react with the organic constituent (butyl acrylate and vinyl acetate) of the paint binder lead to generation of an important number of organic compounds. We demonstrate that the TiO₂ quantity and the organic content of the binder is of paramount importance with respect to the formation of VOCs, which should be considered for future optimization of this air remediation technology based on TiO₂ nanoparticles.

Gas-Phase Oxidation of Allyl Acetate by O3, OH, Cl, and NO3: Reaction Kinetics and Mechanism

Allyl acetate (AA) is widely used as monomer and intermediate in industrial chemicals synthesis. To evaluate the atmospheric outcome of AA, kinetics and mechanism of its gas-phase reaction with main atmospheric oxidants (O₃, OH, Cl, and NO₃) have been investigated in a Teflon reactor at 298 ± 3 K. Both absolute and relative rate methods were used to determine the rate constants for AA reactions with the four atmospheric oxidants. The obtained rate constants (in units of cm³ molecule^-1 s^-1) are (1.8 ± 0.3) × 10^-18, (3.1 ± 0.7) × 10^-11, (2.5 ± 0.5) × 10^-10, and (1.1 ± 0.4) × 10^-14, for reactions with O₃, OH, Cl, and NO_3, respectively. While results for reactions with O₃, OH and Cl are in good agreement with previous studies, the kinetics for the reaction with NO₃ is reported for the first time in this study. On the basis of determined rate constants, the tropospheric lifetimes of AA are τ_O3 = 9 days, τ_OH = 5 h, τ_Cl = 5 days, τ_NO3 = 2 days. On the basis of the products study, reaction mechanisms for these oxidations have been proposed and the reaction products were detected using thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Results show that the main products formed in these reactions are carbonyl compounds. In particular, 2-oxoethyl acetate was detected in all four AA oxidation reactions. Compared to previous studies, several new products were determined for reactions with OH and Cl. These results form a set of comprehensive kinetic data for AA reactions with main atmospheric oxidants and provide a better understanding of the degradation and atmospheric outcome of unsaturated acetate esters in the troposphere, during both daytime and nighttime.

Photodissociation dynamics of dinitrite at 355 nm: initiation of a reactive pathway

Dinitrites are effective nitrosating reagents in preparative chemistry and their decomposition products are involved in the atmospheric reaction of volatile organic compounds with nitrogen oxides (NO_x). In this work, photodissociation dynamics of five alkyl dinitrites were investigated by detecting the LIF spectra of the dissociation products and theoretical calculations. The results showed that the C-C bond connecting the two nitrosooxy (-ONO) functional groups was the weakest bond in vicinal dinitrites and aldehydes were the dissociation products. For dinitrites with two ONO groups separated by a CH₂ group, vinoxy and 1-methylvinoxy radicals were detected as the fragments via photodissociation, indicating a different mechanism compared to thermal decomposition. This observation demonstrated that a new reactive pathway could be initiated by photolysis of dinitrites.

OH-initiated tropospheric photooxidation of allyl acetate: a theoretical study

The mechanisms of OH-initiated oxidation of allyl acetate in the presence of O2/NO have been investigated by performing density functional theory calculations. Two patterns (OH-addition and H-abstraction) of the initial reaction and the subsequent reactions of the primarily produced intermediates (IM1, IM2, and IM4) have been proposed. The OH-addition reactions are more favorable than the H-abstraction reactions, but H-abstraction from the CH2 group cannot be ignored. The major degradation products have been identified. The rate coefficients and the branching ratios of the primary reactions are obtained over the temperature of 200–500 K and the pressure range of 0.001–1000 atm. The total rate coefficient is 3.17 × 10−11 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 at 298 K and 1 atm. With respect to the typical concentration of OH radical (2.0 × 106 molecule cm−3), the atmospheric lifetime of AAC is estimated to be 4.40 h.

The environmental impact of unsaturated fluoroesters: atmospheric chemistry towards OH radicals and Cl atoms, radiative behavior and cumulative ozone creation

Atmospheric lifetimes, reaction mechanisms, infrared spectra, radiative forcing efficiencies, global warming potentials and ozone creation potentials of the allyl and vinyl trifluoroacetate were determined to assess their environmental impact.

Atmospheric Sink of (E)-3-Hexen-1-ol, (Z)-3-Hepten-1-ol, and (Z)-3-Octen-1-ol: Rate Coefficients and Mechanisms of the OH-Radical Initiated Degradation

A kinetic study of the gas-phase reactions of OH radicals with three unsaturated biogenic alcohols, (E)-3-hexen-1-ol, (Z)-3-hepten-1-ol, and (Z)-3-octen-1-ol, has been performed. The rate coefficients obtained are (in units of 10(-10) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1)) k1 (OH + (E)-CH2(OH)CH2CH═CHCH2CH3) = (1.14 ± 0.14), k2 (OH + (Z)-CH2(OH)CH2CH═CHCH2CH2CH3) = (1.28 ± 0.23), and k3 (OH + (Z)-CH2(OH)CH2CH═CHCH2CH2CH2CH3) = (1.49 ± 0.35). In addition, a product study on the reactions of OH with (E)-3-hexen-1-ol and (Z)-3-hepten-1-ol is reported. All the experiments were performed at (298 ± 2) K and 1 atm of NOx-free air in a 1080 L photoreactor with in situ FTIR detection of organics. This work constitutes the first kinetic study of the reactions of OH radicals with (Z)-3-hepten-1-ol and (Z)-3-octen-1-ol as well as the first determination of the fate of the hydroxy alkoxy radicals formed in the title reactions. An analysis of the available rates of addition of OH and Cl to the double bond of different unsaturated alcohols at 298 K has shown that they can be related by the expression log kOH = (0.29 ± 0.04) log kCl - 10.8. The atmospheric lifetimes of the alcohols studies were estimated to be around 1 h for reaction with OH radicals. The products formed in the title reactions are mainly carbonylic compounds that can contribute to the formation of ozone and PANs-type compounds in the troposphere.

Tropospheric chemical degradation of vinyl and allyl acetate initiated by Cl atoms under high and low NOx conditions

The products of the reactions of Cl atoms with vinyl acetate (VA) and allyl acetate (AA) have been investigated with and without NOx in a 1080 L chamber using in situ FTIR.
