[Ge7O13(OH)2F3]3-·Cl-·2[Ni(dien)2]2+: The First Chainlike Germanate Templated by a Transition Metal Complex

Two Chiral Metal Complex Templated Aluminoborates Constructed from Three Types of Oxoboron Clusters

The two acentric aluminoborates (ABOs) [M(dap)₃]₂{Al[B₅O₇(OH)₃][B₅O₈(OH)₂][B₆O₉(OH)₂]} (M and dap represent Co(1)/Ni(2) and 1,2-diaminopropane, respectively) templated by chiral metal complexes (CMCs) have been solvothermally synthesized. The isostructural 1 and 2 crystallize in the chiral space group P2₁. Both feature unprecedented 2D wavelike layers built by three kinds of oxoboron (B-O) clusters ([B₅O₇(OH)₃]^2-, [B₅O₈(OH)₂]^3-, and [B₆O₉(OH)₂]^2-) and AlO₄ tetrahedra. In the frameworks of 1 and 2, AlO₄ and [B₆O₉(OH)₂]^2- units are strictly alternating into 1D chains. Further, [B₅O₈(OH)₂]^3- clusters link adjacent chains to form 2D wavelike layers. In addition, the [B₅O₇(OH)₃]^2- units as the hanging clusters are supported on two sides of the wavelike layers through AlO₄ groups, resulting in the first example of a wavelike layer ABO composed of three kinds of B-O clusters and four types of channels. 1 and 2 display second-harmonic generation (SHG) signals about ∼1.3 and ∼0.93 times that of KH₂PO₄ (KDP) and belong to the class of wide-band-gap semiconductors.

Symmetrically Related Construction and Optical Properties of Two Noncentrosymmetric 3D Iodides of d(10) Cation (Cu(+), Ag(+)) Based on the N-Benzylpyridinium and Its Supramolecular Interactions

Two noncentrosymmetric compounds, namely, [N-Bz-Py]2[Cu6I8] (1) and [N-Bz-Py]4[Ag9I13] (2) (N-Bz-Py(+) = N-benzylpyridinium), with three-dimensional open frameworks, were synthesized solvothermally via in situ benzylation of pyridine. 1 is constructed from 3-connected Cu3I7 secondary building units (SBUs) with chiral (10,3)-a topology, while the occluded N-Bz-Py(+) forms a complementary supramolecular (10,3)-a net via π-π interactions. 2 is characteristic of acentric connections of trimeric Ag3I8 and hexamer Ag6I12 SBU, while N-Bz-Py(+) in the channels aggregates into asymmetrically supramolecular chains via π-π interactions. Remarkable structural correlations imply the unique amplification and transfer of asymmetric information from V-shaped N-Bz-Py(+) to organic supramolecular nets and inorganic frameworks, which are confirmed by their second harmonic generation responses. Adsorption spectra reveal their semiconductive nature (2.52 eV for 1 and 3.02 eV for 2) and interesting reversible thermochromism for 1 based on the intermolecular charge transfer.

A family of germanates constructed from Ge7 clusters co-templated by metal complexes and organic/inorganic species

By using metal complexes and organic amine cations/inorganic anions as co-templates, four novel germanates JLG-n (n = 3, 6, 7, 8) have been prepared under solvothermal conditions. These compounds are all built up from Ge₇ clusters and classified into two structural types: according to T² connection mode of the Ge₇ cluster for JLG-3 with a chain-like structure and to T⁴ connection mode for JLG-n (n = 6, 7, 8) with 2-D layered structures. Then numerous 2-D layered structures were designed by different arrangements of the R- and L-chains of JLG-3. In addition, two 3-D frameworks, H-F1 (16-rings) and H-F2 (24-rings), were designed on the basis of the sheets of JLG-6 and JLG-8, respectively, with the connection of the Ge₇ clusters in T⁴P mode. Since Ge₇ clusters display various connection modes, they are found to be effective for construction of novel open-framework germanates. A series of 2-D and even 3-D structures of germanates can be designed using Ge₇ clusters as SBUs based on the concept of “Scale Chemistry”.

SU-79: a novel germanate with 3D 10- and 11-ring channels templated by a square-planar nickel complex

An open-framework germanate SU-79 was synthesized using nickel complex and amine as the templates. The crystal structure was solved by the combination of rotation electron diffraction (RED) and synchrotron single crystal X-ray diffraction.

(C8H22N4Zn)2Ge7O14(OH)F3: a one-dimensional zinc germanate containing hollow columns with an 18-membered window

A new zinc germanate incorporating a tetradentate amine ligand has been synthesized by the solvothermal method and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, solid-state (19)F NMR spectroscopy, thermal analysis, and IR spectroscopy. Its structure contains close-packed hollow columns with an 18-membered window, each of which contains six one-dimensional chains formed of Ge(7)X(19) (X = O, OH, F) clusters connected to zinc complexes.

Tris(ethyl-enediamine)-cobalt(III) diformatodioxalatoindate(III) dihydrate

In the cation of the title compound, [Co(C(2)H(8)N(2))(3)][In(C(2)O(4))(2)(CHO(2))(2)]·2H(2)O, the Co-N bond lengths lie in the range 1.960 (5)-1.997 (5) Å. In the anion, the In(III) atom is coordin-ated by four O atoms from two oxalato ligands and two O atoms from two formato ligands in a distorted octa-hedral geometry. Inter-molecular O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds form an extensive hydrogen-bonding network, which link the cations, anions and water mol-ecules into three-dimensional structure.

Germanates of 1D Chains, 2D Layers, and 3D Frameworks Built from Ge–O Clusters by Using Metal-Complex Templates: Host–Guest Symmetry and Chirality Transfer

The self-assembly of Ge-O polyhedra by metal-complex templates leads to initial examples of open germanate structures under mild solvothermal conditions. These materials are constructed from Ge-O cluster building blocks (Ge7X19 (X = O, OH, or F) or Ni@Ge14O24(OH)3) and span the full range of dimensionalities from 1D chains of Ge7O13(OH)2F3 x Cl x 2 [Ni(dien)2] (FJ-6) to 2D layers of Ge7O14F3 x 0.5 [In(dien)2] x 0.5 H3dien x 2 H2O (1) and 3D frameworks of Ni@ Ge14O24(OH)3 x 2 [Ni(L)3] (FJ-1 a/FJ-1 b) (dien = diethylenetriamine, L = ethylenediamine (en) or 1,2-diaminopropane (enMe)). The Ge7X19 cluster in FJ-6 and 1 is formed by condensation of four GeX4 tetrahedra, two GeX5 trigonal bipyramids, and one GeX6 octahedron with a mu3-O atom at the center of the cluster, whereas the Ni@ Ge14O24(OH)3 cluster in FJ-1 a/FJ-1 b is formed by condensation of nine peripheral GeO4 tetrahedra and five interior GeO3Ni units with one mu5-Ni atom at the center of the cluster. FJ-6 is characterized by a pair of racemic Ge7O14(OH)2F3 cluster chains and represents only one example of 1D germanates; 1 exhibits unique germanate layers with uniform 10-membered-ring apertures encapsulating an unknown indium complex, and the framework structure of FJ-1 a/FJ-1 b with large 24-membered-ring channels is the first example of porous materials that contain metal-metal bonds (Ge2+-Ni+). These initial examples of germanates from metal-complex templates provide a useful model system for understanding the mechanisms of host-guest interactions, which may further facilitate the design and development of new porous materials "on demand". It is shown that the symmetry and configuration of the guest metal complex can be imprinted onto the host inorganic framework through hydrogen bonding between host and guest.

From Encapsulation to Polypseudorotaxane: Unusual Anion Networks Driven by Predesigned Metal Bis(terpyridine) Complex Cations

Solvothermal reactions of CuSCN, metal (Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+) sulfate, and terpyridine (2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine or 4'-p-tolyl-2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine) in the presence of triphenylphosphine yielded a series of hybrid coordination compounds, in which in situ formed metal bis(terpyridine) complex cations are encapsulated by a 3D anionic network or entangled by 2D heartlike networks, forming encapsulation or polypseudorotaxane supramolecules. The complex cations play a role as template to direct the fabrication of the structures.

Organic–inorganic hybrid materials constructed from inorganic lanthanide sulfate skeletons and organic 4,5-imidazoledicarboxylic acid

Five different types of the lanthanide sulfate-carboxylates family, [La(2)(SO(4))(Himdc)(2)(H2O)2] , [Gd(2)(SO(4))(2)(Himdc)(H2O)3].H2O , [Ln(2)(SO(4))(2)(Himdc)(H2O)(3)].H2O (Ln = Gd3a, Eu3b), [Eu(6)Cu(SO(4))(6)(Himdc)(4)(H2O)(14)] , and [Ln(Himc)(SO(4))(H2O)] (Ln = Eu5a, Gd5b, Tb5c, Dy5d, Er5e); H(2)imc = 4-imidazolecarboxylic acid, H(3)imdc = 4,5-imidazoledicarboxylic acid) have been obtained by hydrothermal reactions of Ln(2)O(3), transition metal sulfates and H(3)imdc at 170 degrees C and characterized by means of elemental analyses, IR, TG analysis, luminescence spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The 3D structure of 1 is constructed from alternately linkages of organic {La(Himdc)} layers and inorganic {La(2)O(2)(SO(4))} layers, with the La atoms as hinges. 2 and 3a/3b both contain alternately arranged 1D left- and right-handed helical {Ln(imdc)} chains bridged by SO(4)(2-) anions to form a 3D framework with 1D rectangle-like channels along the b axis. The structural differences of 2 and 3a/3b lie in the linkages of the SO(4)(2-) anions. Complex 4 consists of 2D tubular Eu-sulfate layers pillared by {Cu(Himdc)(2)} units to generate a 3D network. Complexes 5a-5e possess 2D bamboo-raft-like layer structures based on helical tubes. Interestingly, H(2)imc comes from the in-situ decarboxylation of H(3)imdc in the hydrothermal reactions. The luminescence properties of the complexes 3a, 4, 5a 5c, 5d were investigated in solid state at room temperature.

(C4N3H15)[(BO2)2(GeO2)4]: The First Organically Templated 3D Borogermanate Showing 1D 12-Rings, Large Channels, and a Novel Zeolite-type Framework Topology Constructed from Ge8O24 and B2O7 Cluster Units

The first organically templated 3D borogermanate with a novel zeolite-type topology, (C4N3H15)[(BO2)2(GeO2)4] FJ-17, has been solvothermally synthesized and characterized by IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), TGA, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallized in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c with a = 6.967(1) A, b = 10.500(1) A, c = 20.501(1) A, beta = 90.500(3) degrees , V = 1499.68(8) A3, and Z = 4. The framework topology of this compound is the previously unknown topology with the vertex symbols 3.4.3.9.3.8(2) (vertex 1), 3.8.3.4.6(2).9(2) (vertex 2), 3.8(2).4.6(2).6(2).8 (vertex 3), 4.8.4.8.8(3).12 (vertex 4), 4.8.4.8.8(2).12 (vertex 5), and 3.8.4.6(2).6.8(2) (vertex 6). The structure is constructed from Ge8O24 and B2O7 clusters. The Ge8O24 cluster contains eight GeO4 tetrahedra that share vertices; the B2O7 unit is composed of two BO4 tetrahedra sharing a vertex. The cyclic Ge8O24 clusters connect to each other through vertices to form a 2D layer with 8,12-nets. The adjacent layers are further linked by the dimeric B2O7 cluster units, resulting in a 3D framework with 12- and 8-ring channels along the a and b axes, respectively. In addition, there is a unique B2GeO9 3-ring in the structure.
