Abstract
Three cyano-coordinated cobalt porphyrin dimers were synthesized and thoroughly characterized. The X-ray structure of the complexes reveals that cyanide binds in a terminal fashion in both the anti and trans isomers of ethane- and ethylene-bridged cobalt porphyrin dimers, while in the cis ethylene-bridged dimer, cyanides bind in both terminal and bridging modes. The nonconjugated ethane-bridged complex stabilizes exclusively a diamagnetic metal-centered oxidation of type CoIII(por)(CN)2 both in the solid and in solution. In contrast, the complexes with the conjugated ethylene-bridge contain signatures of both paramagnetic ligand-centered oxidation of the type CoII(por•+)(CN)2 and diamagnetic metal-centered oxidation of type CoIII(por)(CN)2 with the metal-centered oxidized species being the major component in the solid state as observed in XPS, while the ligand-centered oxidized species are present in a significant amount in solution. 1H NMR spectrum in solution displays two set of signals corresponding to the simultaneous presence of both the diamagnetic and paramagnetic species. EPR and magnetic investigation reveal that there is a moderate ferromagnetic coupling between the unpaired electrons of the low-spin CoII center and the porphyrin π-cation radical in CoII(por•+)(CN)2 species as well as an antiferromagnetic coupling between the two CoII(por•+) units through the ethylene and CN bridges.

Abstract
A series of two-electron-oxidized cobalt porphyrin dimers have been synthesized upon controlled oxidations using halogens. Rather unexpectedly, X-ray structures of two of these complexes contain two structurally different low-spin molecules in the same asymmetric unit of their unit cells: one is the metal-centered oxidized diamagnetic entity of the type CoIII(por), while the other one is the ligand-centered oxidized paramagnetic entity of the type CoII(por•+). Spectroscopic, magnetic, and DFT investigations confirmed the coexistence of the two very different electronic structures both in the solid and solution phases and also revealed a ferromagnetic spin coupling between Co(II) and porphyrin π-cation radicals and a weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the π-cation radicals of two macrocycles via the bridge in the paramagnetic complex.

Abstract
A cobalt porphyrin dimer is constructed in which two Co(II)porphyrins are connected covalently through a redox-active diethylpyrrole moiety via a flexible but "nonconjugated" methylene bridge. Upon oxidation with even a mild oxidant such as iodine, each cobalt(II) center and porphyrin ring undergo 1e- oxidation, leading to the formation of a 4e--oxidized cobalt(III)porphyrin dication diradical complex. Other oxidants such as Cl2 and Br2 also produce similar results. To stabilize such highly oxidized dication diradicals, the "nonconjugated" methylene spacer undergoes a facile and spontaneous oxidation to form a methine group with a drastic structural change, thereby making the bridge fully π-conjugated and enabling through-bond communication. This results in a strong spin coupling between two π-cation radicals which stabilizes the singlet state. The experimental observations are also strongly supported by extensive density functional theory calculations. The present study highlights the crucial role played by the nature of the bridge in the long-range electronic communication.

Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) is a key signaling molecule in health and disease. While nitrite acts as a reservoir of NO activity, mechanisms for NO release require further understanding. A series of electronically varied β-diketiminatocopper(II) nitrite complexes [CuII](κ2-O2N) react with a range of electronically tuned triarylphosphines PArZ3 that release NO with the formation of O═PArZ3. Second-order rate constants are largest for electron-poor copper(II) nitrite and electron-rich phosphine pairs. Computational analysis reveals a transition-state structure energetically matched with experimentally determined activation barriers. The production of NO follows a pathway that involves nitrite isomerization at CuII from κ2-O2N to κ1-NO2 followed by O-atom transfer (OAT) to form O═PArZ3 and [CuI]-NO that releases NO upon PArZ3 binding at CuI to form [CuI]-PArZ3. These findings illustrate important mechanistic considerations involved in NO formation from nitrite via OAT.

Abstract
A V(iii) complex bearing a tris(thiolato)phoshine derivative mediates the reduction of nitrite without the assistance of external protons or oxophilic substrates. The metal site plays dual roles for nitrite binding and deoxygenation. The reaction is monitored by spectroscopy combined with isotopic labeling experiments. The formed product, a {VNO}4 species, is isolated and characterized.

Abstract
Nitric oxide is a vital signaling molecule that controls blood flow and oxygenation and nitrite serves as an important reservoir for nitric oxide in biology. While copper containing enzymes are known to reduce nitrite to nitric oxide, herein we report a new pathway to release nitric oxide via oxygen atom transfer from nitrite at a copper(ii) site.

Abstract
Water-soluble cationic cobalt(tetra(N-methyl-pyridyl)porphyrins, CoTMpyP(4) and CoTMpyP(2) and the β-pyrrole octabrominated derivative CoTMpyP(4)Br8 have been studied by cyclic voltammetry under aqueous aerobic conditions at pH of 4.0 with and without addition of nitrite to explore their ability to catalyze the reduction of dioxygen. The porphyrins and their nitro/nitrosyl derivatives were studied in aqueous acetate buffer solution at a solid silver electrode and then also as they were immobilized in Nafion® film loaded with silver nanoparticles which provided electrical conductivity. Under these reducing conditions with nitrite in solution, coordinated nitrite appears to undergo an oxo-transfer/reduction reaction resulting in the formation of the nitrosyl ligand. The reaction of the nitrosyl complex allows a short-lived electrocatalytic reduction reaction with dioxygen before NO is lost from the complex by dissociation. The thermodynamics of the reactions and possible catalytic intermediates in the reduction of dioxygen were studied by DFT (BP/6-31G*) computations. An unusual N -bound cyclic NO3- structure was obtained in the optimized geometries for the product of reduced nitrosyl porphyrins and dioxygen in the model complexes and for [CoTMpyP(2)(NO-O2)]- . These structures are tentatively proposed to represent an intermediate in the mechanism of activation of dioxygen in catalytic reduction. DFT (BP/6-31G*) computations were also applied to probe thermodynamics and intermediates in the known catalytic reduction of NO to N2O by the reduced porphyrin under anaerobic conditions. Thermodynamics estimates suggest that reduction occurs through coordinated NO in the reduced porphyrin species similar to cytochrome P450nor (nitric oxide reductase), but the detailed mechanism is not clear.

Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) and its derivatives such as nitrite and hyponitrite are biologically important species of relevance to human health. Much of their physiological relevance stems from their interactions with the iron centers in heme proteins. The chemical reactivities displayed by the heme-NOx species (NOx = NO, nitrite, hyponitrite) are a function of the binding modes of the NOx ligands. Hence, an understanding of the types of binding modes extant in heme-NOx compounds is important if we are to unravel the inherent chemical properties of these NOx metabolites. In this Forum Article, the experimentally characterized linkage isomers of heme-NOx models and proteins are presented and reviewed. Nitrosyl linkage isomers of synthetic iron and ruthenium porphyrins have been generated by photolysis at low temperatures and characterized by spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Nitrite linkage isomers in synthetic metalloporphyrin derivatives have been generated from photolysis experiments and in low-temperature matrices. In the case of nitrite adducts of heme proteins, both N and O binding have been determined crystallographically, and the role of the distal H-bonding residue in myoglobin in directing the O-binding mode of nitrite has been explored using mutagenesis. To date, only one synthetic metalloporphyrin complex containing a hyponitrite ligand (displaying an O-binding mode) has been characterized by crystallography. This is contrasted with other hyponitrite binding modes experimentally determined for coordination compounds and computationally for NO reductase enzymes. Although linkage isomerism in heme-NOx derivatives is still in its infancy, opportunities now exist for a detailed exploration of the existence and stabilities of the metastable states in both heme models and heme proteins.

Abstract
It is now well-established that mammalian heme proteins are reactive with various nitrogen oxide species and that these reactions may play significant roles in mammalian physiology. For example, the ferrous heme protein myoglobin (Mb) has been shown to reduce nitrite (NO(2)(-)) to nitric oxide (NO) under hypoxic conditions. We demonstrate here that the distal pocket histidine residue (His64) of horse heart metMb(III) (i.e., ferric Mb(III)) has marked effects on the mode of nitrite ion coordination to the iron center. X-ray crystal structures were determined for the mutant proteins metMb(III) H64V (2.0 A resolution) and its nitrite ion adduct metMb(III) H64V-nitrite (1.95 A resolution), and metMb(III) H64V/V67R (1.9 A resolution) and its nitrite ion adduct metMb(III) H64V/V67R-nitrite (2.0 A resolution). These are compared to the known structures of wild-type (wt) hh metMb(III) and its nitrite ion adduct hh metMb(III)-nitrite, which binds NO(2)(-) via an O-atom in a trans-FeONO configuration. Unlike wt metMb(III), no axial H(2)O is evident in either of the metMb(III) mutant structures. In the ferric H64V-nitrite structure, replacement of the distal His residue with Val alters the binding mode of nitrite from the nitrito (O-binding) form in the wild-type protein to a weakly bound nitro (N-binding) form. Reintroducing a H-bonding residue in the H64V/V67R double mutant restores the O-binding mode of nitrite. We have also examined the effects of these mutations on reactivities of the metMb(III)s with cysteine as a reducing agent and of the (ferrous) Mb(II)s with nitrite ion under anaerobic conditions. The Mb(II)s were generated by reduction of the Mb(III) precursors in a second-order reaction with cysteine, the rate constants for this step following the order H64V/V67R > H64V >> wt. The rate constants for the oxidation of the Mb(II)s by nitrite (giving NO as the other product) follow the order wt > H64V/V67R >> H64V and suggest a significant role of the distal pocket H-bonding residue in nitrite reduction.

Abstract
Complexes of the (nitro)( meso-tetrakis(2- N-methylpyridyl)porphyinato)cobalt(III) cation, [LCoTMpyP(2)(NO 2)] (4+), in which L = water or ethanol have been immobilized through ionic attraction within Nafion films (Naf). These immobilized six-coordinate species, [LCoTMPyP(2)(NO 2)/Naf], have been found to catalyze the oxidation of triphenylphosphine in ethanol solution by dioxygen, therefore retaining the capacity to activate dioxygen catalytically without an additional reducing agent as was previously observed in nonaqueous solution for the non-ionic (nitro)cobalt porphyrin analogs. Heating these immobilized six-coordinate species under vacuum conditions results in the formation of the five-coordinate nitro derivatives, [CoTMPyP(2)(NO 2)/Naf] at 85 degrees C and [CoTMPyP(2)/Naf] at 110 degrees C. The catalytic oxidation of gas-phase cyclohexene with O 2 is supported only by the resulting immobilized five-coordinate nitro complex as was previously seen with the corresponding solution-phase catalyst in dichloromethane solution. The simultaneous catalytic oxidation of triphenylphosphine and cyclohexene with O 2 in the presence of the Nafion-bound six-coordinate ethanol nitro complex is also observed; however, this process is not seen for the CoTPP derivative in dichloromethane solution. The oxidation reactions do not occur with unmodified Nafion film or with Nafion-supported [BrCo(III)TmpyP]/Naf or [Co(II)TmpyP]/Naf, indicating the necessity for the nitro/nitrosyl ligand in the oxidation mechanism. The existence of a second reactive intermediate is indicated because the two simultaneous oxidation reactions depend on two distinct oxygen atom-transfer steps having different reactivity. The absence of homogeneous cyclohexene oxidation by the six-coordinate (H 2O)CoTPP(NO 2) derivatives in the presence of Ph 3P and O 2 in dichloromethane solution indicates that the second reactive intermediate is lost by an unidentified route only in solution, implying that the immobilization of it in Nafion allows it to react with cyclohexene. Although direct observation of this species has not been achieved, a comparitive DFT study of likely intermediates in several catalytic oxidation mechanisms at the BP 6-31G* level supports the possibility that this intermediate is a peroxynitro species on the basis of relative thermodynamic accessibility. The alternate intermediates evaluated include the reduced cobalt(II) porphyrin, the dioxygen adduct cobalt(III)-O 2 (-), the oxidized cobalt(II) pi-cation radical, and the nitrito complex, cobalt(III)-ONO.

Abstract
Nitrite is now recognized as a storage pool of bioactive nitric oxide (NO). Hemoglobin (Hb) and myoglobin (Mb) convert, under certain conditions, nitrite to NO. This newly discovered nitrite reductase activity of Hb and Mb provides an attractive alternative to mammalian NO synthesis from the NO synthase pathway that requires dioxygen. We recently reported the X-ray crystal structure of the nitrite adduct of ferric horse heart Mb, and showed that the nitrite ligand binds in an unprecedented O-binding (nitrito) mode to the d(5) ferric center in Mb(III)(ONO) [D.M. Copeland, A. Soares, A.H. West, G.B. Richter-Addo, J. Inorg. Biochem. 100 (2006) 1413-1425]. We also showed that the distal pocket in Mb allows for different conformations of the NO ligand (120 degrees and 144 degrees ) in Mb(II)NO depending on the mode of preparation of the compound. In this article, we report the crystal structures of the nitrite and NO adducts of manganese-substituted hh Mb (a d(4) system) and of the nitrite adduct of cobalt-substituted hh Mb (a d(6) system). We show that the distal His64 residue directs the nitrite ligand towards the rare nitrito O-binding mode in Mn(III)Mb and Co(III)Mb. We also report that the distal pocket residues allow a stabilization of an unprecendented bent MnNO moiety in Mn(II)MbNO. These crystal structural data, when combined with the data for the aquo, methanol, and azide MnMb derivatives, provide information on the role of distal pocket residues in the observed binding modes of nitrite and NO ligands to wild-type and metal-substituted Mb.

Abstract
Sublimed layers of Fe II MPyTPP and Fe II MPyTTP ( MPyTPP and MPyTTP are meso-mono-4-pyridyl-triphenyl- and meso-mono-4-pyridyl-tri-p-tolyl-porphyrin dianions, respectively) consist of coordination oligomers that are formed by binding of pyridyl nitrogen atoms with the iron centers of the adjacent molecules in the film. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy including experiments with the 15 NO 2 isotopomer demonstrates that the reaction of low pressure NO 2 gas with these layers leads to the formation of two types of complexes: six-coordinate nitro-complexes, in which the fifth site is occupied by the pyridyl group of the neighboring molecule in the layer and five-coordinate nitrito-complexes that terminate the oligomers. Further addition of NO 2 increments leads to the preferential oxidation of these nitrito ligands to bidentate nitrato ligands. These layers conserve their porosity upon standing and allow study of the oxo-transfer reactivity from coordinated nitro-groups to appropriate oxygen acceptors.

Abstract
The reactions of the nitrogen Lewis bases (B) 1-methylimidazole (1-MeIm), pyridine (Py), and NH3 as gases with sublimed layers containing the 5-coordinate nitrito iron(III)-porphyrinato complexes Fe(Por)(eta1-ONO) (1) are described (Por = meso-tetraphenyl-porphyrinato or meso-tetra-p-tolyl-porphyrinato dianions). In situ FTIR and optical spectra are used to characterize the formation of the 6-coordinate nitro complexes formed by the reaction of 1 with B = 1-MeIm, Py, or NH3. These represent the first examples of 6-coordinate amino-nitro complexes with sterically unprotected iron-porphyrins. The interaction of ammonia with Fe(Por)(ONO) at 140 K initially led to the nitrito species Fe(Por)(NH3)(eta1-ONO), and this species isomerized to the nitro complexes Fe(Por)(NH3)(eta1-NO2) upon warming to 180 K. When the latter were warmed to room temperature under intense pumping, the initial nitrito complexes Fe(Por)(eta1-ONO) were restored. Assignments of vibrational frequencies for the coordinated nitro group in 6-coordinate iron-porphyrin complexes are given and confirmed using 15N-labeled nitrogen dioxide to identify characteristic infrared bands. For M(Por)(B)(NO2) complexes (M = Fe or Co), an inverse correlation between the net charge transfer from the axial ligand B to the nitro group and the value of Deltanu = nua(NO2) - nus(NO2) is proposed. These observations are discussed in the context of growing interest in potential physiological roles of nitrite ion reactions with ferro- and ferri-heme proteins.

Abstract
The reactions of NO and/or NO2- with three water-soluble cobalt porphyrins [Co(III)(P)(H2O)2]n, where P = TPPS, TCPP, and TMPyP, were studied in detail. At pH < 3, the reaction with NO proceeds through a single reaction step. From the kinetic data and activation parameters, the [Co(III)(P)(NO)(H2O)]n complex is proposed to be the primary product of the reaction with NO. This complex reacts further with a second NO molecule through an inner-sphere electron-transfer reaction to generate the final product, [Co(III)(P)(NO-)](n-1). At pH > 3, although a single reaction step is also observed, a systematic study as a function of the NO and NO2- concentrations revealed that two reaction steps are operative. In the first, NO2- and NO compete to substitute coordinated water in [Co(III)(P)(H2O)2]n to yield [Co(III)(P)(NO)(H2O)]n and [Co(III)(P)(NO2-)(H2O)](n-1) as the primary reaction products. Only the nitrite complex could be detected and no final product formation was observed during the reaction. It is proposed that [Co(III)(P)(NO)(H2O)]n rapidly reacts with NO2- to form the nitrite complex, which in the second reaction step reacts with another NO molecule to generate the final product through an inner-sphere electron-transfer reaction. The reported results are relevant for the interaction of vitamin B(12a) with NO and NO2-.

Abstract
DFT(PW91/TZP) calculations, including full geometry optimizations, have been carried on [FeII(P)(NO2)]-, Fe(III)(P)(NO2), [Fe(II)(P)(NO2)(py)]-, Fe(III)(P)(NO2)(py), [Fe(III)(P)(NO2)2]-, and Fe(III)(P)(NO2)(NO), where P is the unsubstituted porphine dianion, as well as on certain picket fence porphyrin (TPivPP) analogues. The bonding in [Fe(II)(P)(NO2)]- and Fe(III)(P)(NO2), as well as in their pyridine adducts, reveals a sigma-donor interaction of the nitrite HOMO and the Fe dz2 orbital, where the Fe-Nnitro axis is defined as the z direction and the nitrite plane is identified as xz. Both molecules also feature a pi-acceptor interaction of the nitrite LUMO and the Fe dyz orbital, whereas the SOMO of the Fe(III)-nitro complexes may be identified as dxz. The Fe(III)-nitro porphyrins studied all exhibit extremely high adiabatic electron affinities, ranging from about 2.5 eV for Fe(III)(P)(NO2) and Fe(III)(P)(NO2)(py) to about 3.4 eV for their TPivPP analogues. Transition-state optimizations for oxygen-atom transfer from Fe(III)(P)(NO2) and Fe(III)(P)(NO2)(py) to dimethyl sulfide yielded activation energies of 0.45 and 0.77 eV, respectively, which is qualitatively consistent with the observed far greater stability of Fe(III)(TPivPP)(NO2)(py) relative to Fe(III)(TPivPP)(NO2). Addition of NO to yield {FeNO}6 nitro-nitrosyl adducts such as Fe(P)(NO2)(NO) provides another mechanism whereby Fe(III)-nitro porphyrins can relieve their extreme electron affinities. In Fe(P)(NO2)(NO), the bonding involves substantial Fe-NO pi-bonding, but the nitrite acts essentially as a simple sigma-donor, which accounts for the relatively long Fe-Nnitro distance in this molecule.

Abstract
A critical component of the biological activity of NO and nitrite involves their coordination to the iron center in heme proteins. Irradiation (330 < lambda < 500 nm) of the nitrosyl-nitro compound (TPP)Fe(NO)(NO(2)) (TPP = tetraphenylporphyrinato dianion) at 11 K results in changes in the IR spectrum associated with both nitro-to-nitrito and nitrosyl-to-isonitrosyl linkage isomerism. Only the nitro-to-nitrito linkage isomer is obtained at 200 K, indicating that the isonitrosyl linkage isomer is less stable than the nitrito linkage isomer. DFT calculations reveal two ground-state conformations of (porphine)Fe(NO)(NO(2)) that differ in the relative axial ligand orientations (i.e., GS parallel and GS perpendicular). In both conformations, the FeNO group is bent (156.4 degrees for GS parallel, 159.8 degrees for GS perpendicular) for this formally {FeNO}(6) compound. Three conformations of the nitrosyl-nitrito isomer (porphine)Fe(NO)(ONO) (MSa parallel, MSa perpendicular, and MSa(L)) and two conformations of the isonitrosyl-nitro isomer (porphine)Fe(ON)(NO(2)) (MSb parallel and MSb perpendicular) are identified, as are three conformations of the double-linkage isomer (porphine)Fe(ON)(ONO) (MSc parallel, MSc perpendicular, MSc(L)). Only 2 of the 10 optimized geometries contain near-linear FeNO (MSa(L)) and FeON (MSc(L)) bonds. The energies of the ground-state and isomeric structures increase in the order GS < MSa < MSb < MSc. Vibrational frequencies for all of the linkage isomers have been calculated, and the theoretical gas-phase absorption spectrum of (porphine)Fe(NO)(NO(2)) has been analyzed to obtain information on the electronic transitions responsible for the linkage isomerization. Comparison of the experimental and theoretical IR spectra does not provide evidence for the existence of a double linkage isomer of (TPP)Fe(NO)(NO(2)).
