Abstract
A set of substituted 1,4,7-triazacyclononane ligands was synthesised, including a wide series of novel derivatives bearing a thiazole or thiophene side group, with the potential to incorporate these derivatives into a polymeric material; some previously known/studied ligands were also synthesised for comparative purposes. The corresponding copper(II) complexes were prepared, and their ability to mediate the hydrolysis of phosphate ester bonds was studied via UV-Vis spectrophotometry, using bis(p-nitrophenyl)phosphate as a model substrate. Some of the prepared complexes showed a considerable enhancement of the phosphate ester hydrolysis in comparison with previously studied systems, which makes them some of the most effective complexes ever tested for this purpose. Therefore, these novel, potentially bifunctional systems could provide the possibility of creating new coating materials for medicinal devices that could prevent biofilm formation.

Abstract
Tridentate ligands offer theree donor atoms to coordinate to metal ions. The remaining vacant coordination sites on the metal ions provided opportunities to implement additional co-ligands to generate complexes with desired properties. Herein we discuss selected examples of Cu(ii) complexes with tridentate ligands utilizing combinations of N, O, S, and Se donors, focusing on effects of ligand flexibility/rigidity on their coordination modes, properties and applications.

Abstract
Design and synthesis of enzyme mimic with programmed molecular interaction among several building blocks including metal complexes and metal chelators is of intellectual and practical significance. The preparation of artificial enzymes that mimic the natural enzymes such as hydrolases, phosphatases, etc. remains a great challenge in the field of supramolecular chemistry. Herein we report on the design and synthesis of asymmetric (nonsymmetric) supermolecules by the 2:2:2 self-assembly of an amphiphilic zinc(II)-cyclen complex containing a 2,2'-bipyridyl linker and one long alkyl chain (Zn2L3), barbital analogues, and Cu2+ as model compounds of an enzyme alkaline phosphatase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphate monoesters such as mono(4-nitrophenyl)phosphate at neutral pH in two-phase solvent system (H2O/CHCl3) in pH 7.4 and 37 °C. Hydrolytic activity of these complexes was found to be catalytic, and their catalytic turnover numbers are 3-4. The mechanistic studies based on the UV/vis and emission spectra of the H2O and CHCl3 phases of the reaction mixtures suggest that the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity balance of the supramolecular catalysts is an important factor for catalytic activity.

Abstract
Fluorination of [ScCl3(Me3-tacn)] (Me3-tacn = 1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) and [ScCl3(BnMe2-tacn)] (BnMe2-tacn = 1,4-dimethyl-7-benzyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) by Cl/F exchange with 3 mol. equiv. of anhydrous [NMe4]F in CH3CN solution yields the corresponding [ScF3(R3-tacn)] (R3 = Me3 or BnMe2). These are the first examples of scandium fluoride complexes containing neutral co-ligands. The fluorination occurs stepwise, and using a deficit of [NMe4]F produced [ScF2Cl(Me3-tacn)]. Attempts to fluorinate [YCl3(Me3-tacn)], [YI3(Me3-tacn)], [LaCl3(Me3-tacn)(OH2)] or [MCl3(terpy)] (M = Sc, Y or La; terpy = 2,2':6'2''-terpyridyl) using a similar method were unsuccessful, due to the Cl/F exchange being accompanied by loss of the neutral ligand from the metal centre. Fluorination of [ScCl3(Me3-tacn)] or [ScCl3(terpy)] with Me3SnF was also successful. The products were identified as the very unusual heterobimetallic [Sc(Me3-tacn)F2(μ-F)SnMe3Cl] and [Sc(terpy)F(μ-F)2(SnMe3Cl)2], in which the Me3SnCl formed in the reaction behaves as a weak Lewis acid towards the scandium fluoride complex, linked by Sc-F-Sn bridges. [Sc(terpy)F(μ-F)2(SnMe3Cl)2] decomposes irreversibly in solution but, whilst multinuclear NMR data show that [Sc(Me3-tacn)F2(μ-F)SnMe3Cl] is dissociated into the [ScF3(Me3-tacn)] and Me3SnCl in CH3CN solution, the bimetallic complex reforms upon evaporation of the solvent. The new scandium fluoride complexes and the chloride precursors have been characterised by microanalysis, IR and multinuclear NMR (1H, 19F, 45Sc) spectroscopy as appropriate. X-ray crystal structures provide unambiguous evidence for the identities of [Sc(Me3-tacn)F2(μ-F)SnMe3Cl], [ScF2Cl(Me3-tacn)], [YI3(Me3-tacn)], [{YI2(Me3-tacn)}2(μ-O)], [ScCl3(terpy)], [YCl3(terpy)(OH2)], and [{La(terpy)(OH2)Cl2}2(μ-Cl)2]. Once formed, the [ScF3(R3-tacn)] complexes are stable in water and unaffected by a ten-fold excess of Cl- or MeCO2-, although they are immediately decomposed by excess F-. The potential use of [ScF3(R3-tacn)] type complexes as platforms for 18F PET (positron emission tomography) radiopharmaceuticals is briefly discussed. Attempts to use the Group 3 fluoride "hydrates", MF3·xH2O, as precursors were unsuccessful; no reaction with R3-tacn or terpy occurred either on reflux in CH3CN or under hydrothermal conditions (H2O, 180° C, 15 h). PXRD data showed that these "hydrates" actually contain the anhydrous metal trifluorides with small amounts of surface or interstitial water.

Abstract
Examples of proteins that incorporate one or more metal ions within their structure are found within a broad range of classes, including oxidases, oxidoreductases, reductases, proteases, proton transport proteins, electron transfer/transport proteins, storage proteins, lyases, rusticyanins, metallochaperones, sporulation proteins, hydrolases, endopeptidases, luminescent proteins, iron transport proteins, oxygen storage/transport proteins, calcium binding proteins, and monooxygenases. The metal coordination environment therein is often generated from residues inherent to the protein, small exogenous molecules (e.g., aqua ligands) and/or macrocyclic porphyrin units found, for example, in hemoglobin, myoglobin, cytochrome C, cytochrome C oxidase, and vitamin B12. Thus, there continues to be considerable interest in employing macrocyclic metal complexes to construct low-molecular weight models for metallobiosites that mirror essential features of the coordination environment of a bound metal ion without inclusion of the surrounding protein framework. Herein, we review and appraise our research exploring the application of the metal complexes formed by two macrocyclic ligands, 1,4,7-triazacyclononane (tacn) and 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (cyclen), and their derivatives in biological inorganic chemistry. Taking advantage of the kinetic inertness and thermodynamic stability of their metal complexes, these macrocyclic scaffolds have been employed in the development of models that aid the understanding of metal ion-binding natural systems, and complexes with potential applications in biomolecule sensing, diagnosis, and therapy. In particular, the focus has been on "coordinatively unsaturated" metal complexes that incorporate a kinetically inert and stable metal-ligand moiety, but which also contain one or more weakly bound ligands, allowing for the reversible binding of guest molecules via the formation and dissociation of coordinate bonds. With regards to mimicking metallobiosites, examples are presented from our work on tacn-based complexes developed as simplified structural models for multimetallic enzyme sites. In particular, structural comparisons are made between multinuclear copper(II) complexes formed by such ligands and multicopper enzymes featuring type-2 and type-3 copper centers, such as ascorbate oxidase (AO) and laccase (Lc). Likewise, with the aid of relevant examples, we highlight the importance of cooperativity between either multiple metal centers or a metal center and a proximal auxiliary unit appended to the macrocyclic ligand in achieving efficient phosphate ester cleavage. Finally, the critical importance of the Zn(II)-imido and Zn(II)-phosphate interactions in Zn-cyclen-based systems for delivering highly sensitive electrochemical and fluorescent chemosensors is also showcased. The Account additionally highlights some of the factors that limit the performance of these synthetic nucleases and the practical application of the biosensors, and then identifies some avenues for the development of more effective macrocyclic constructs in the future.

Abstract
Two binuclear Cu(II) complexes of N-functionalized macrocycle ligands, namely 1,3-bis(1,4,7-triaza-1-cyclonomyl)propane and 1-(3-(1,4,7-triazonan-1-yl)propyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclo-dodecane, were synthesized and their ability to hydrolyze the cleavage of supercoiled plasmid DNA (pBR322) was compared with that of structurally related non-functionalized mononuclear Cu(II) complexes. The former, binuclear Cu(II) complex with the symmetrical ligand exhibited enhanced double-strand cleavage activity compared to the other three complexes at the same [Cu(2+)] concentration. In contrast, the latter binuclear complex with unsymmetrical macrocylic ligand did not give rise to double-strand DNA cleavage. The linear DNA formation induced by the mononuclear Cu(II) 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclo-dodecane complex was realized via a non-random double-stranded scission process. The differential cleavage activity is discussed in relation to dimer formation, effective cooperation and coordination environment of the metal center. The hydrolytic cleavage by the copper complexes without H2O2 is supported by evidence from an anaerobic reaction, free radical quenching, and nitro blue tetrazolium assay. In contrast, both the binuclear complexes cleaved supercoiled DNA efficiently to Form III (linearized DNA) in the presence of H2O2, indicating that nuclearity is a crucial parameter in oxidative cleavage. The radical scavenger inhibition study and nitro blue tetrazolium assay suggested the involvement of H2O2 and superoxide ions in the oxidative cleavage of DNA by the binuclear complexes.

Abstract
The effects of short-range electron correlation, long-range electron exchange, local and nonlocal parts of density, higher order gradients of density, and adding some percentage of Hartree–Fock exchange to the functional on the prediction of geometrical parameters were investigated. A copper complex namely 1,2-bis(1,4,7-triaza-1-cyclononyl) ethane copper (II) with Jahn–Teller distortion in octahedral geometry was used to evaluate the performance of 50 commonly available density functionals. The standard 3-21G basis set was used for all light elements, while pseudo potential LANL2DZ was used for the copper atom. The best bond lengths and bond angles were obtained using M05-2x and OP functionals respectively. Also in order to more accurate survey the performance of B3LYP, we used this functional with two all-electron basis sets (6-31G and 3-21G) and three basis sets involving effective core potentials (LANL2DZ/3-21G, LANL2DZ, and LACVP).

Abstract
Reaction of terbium triflate with a heptadentate ligand derivative of cyclen, L1 = 2-[7-ethyl-4,10-bis(isopropylcarbamoylmethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododec-1-yl]-N-isopropyl-acetamide, produced a new synthetic ribonuclease, [Tb(L1)(OTf)(OH(2))](OTf)(2).MeCN (C1). X-ray crystal structure analysis indicates that the terbium(III) center in C1 is 9-coordinate, with a capped square-antiprism geometry. While the terbium(III) center is tightly bound by the L1 ligand, two of the coordination sites are occupied by labile water and triflate ligands. In water, the triflate ligand is likely to be displaced, forming [Tb(L1)(OH(2))(2)](3+), which is able to effectively promote RNA cleavage. This complex greatly accelerates the rate of intramolecular transesterification of an activated model RNA phosphodiester, uridine-3'-p-nitrophenylphosphate (UpNP), with k(obs) = 5.5(1) x 10(-2) s(-1) at 21 degrees C and pH 7.5, corresponding to an apparent second-order rate constant of 277(5) M(-1) s(-1). By contrast, the analogous complex of an octadentate derivative of cyclen featuring only a single labile coordination site, [Tb(L2)(OH(2))](OTf)(3) (C2), where L2 = 2-[4,7,10-tris(isopropylcarbamoylmethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododec-1-yl]-N-isopropyl-acetamide, is inactive. [Tb(L1)(OH(2))(2)](3+) is also capable of hydrolyzing short transcripts of the HIV-1 transactivation response (TAR) element, HIV-1 dimerization initiation site (DIS) and ribosomal A-site, as well as formyl methionine tRNA (tRNA(fMet)), albeit at a considerably slower rate than UpNP transesterification (k(obs) = 2.78(8) x 10(-5) s(-1) for TAR cleavage at 37 degrees C, pH 6.5, corresponding to an apparent second-order rate constant of 0.56(2) M(-1)s(-1)). Cleavage is concentrated at the single-stranded "bulge" regions of these RNA motifs. Exploiting this selectivity, [Tb(L1)(OH(2))(2)](3+) was successfully employed in footprinting experiments, in which binding of the Tat peptide and neomycin B to the bulge region of the TAR stem-loop was confirmed.

Abstract
The title neutral copper complex, [Cu2Cl4(C8H17N3O2)2], shows a binuclear center with a Cu—(μ-Cl)2—Cu core, in which each copper ion is coordinated by the N,N,O donor atoms of the tridentate ligand 1,4,6-trimethyl-6-nitro-1,4-diazepine (meaaz-NO2) and three chloride exogenous ligands. Each metal ion is facially coordinated by meaaz-NO2 through N,N,O donor atoms, whereas two bridging and one terminal chloride ions occupy the other face of the highly Jahn–Teller-distorted octahedron. Two N atoms from tertiary amine groups of the meaaz-NO2 ligand and two exogenous Cl atoms with short Cu—N and Cu—Cl distances define the equatorial plane. The coordination around each CuII ion is completed by another Cl atom and an O atom from the NO2 group, in the axial positions. The binuclear complex exhibits a centrosymmetric structure with point symmetry .

Abstract
New 1,4,7,10-tetrazacyclododecane ([12]aneN4 or cyclen) ligands with different heterocyclic spacers (triazine and pyridine) of various lengths (bi- and tripyridine) or an azacrown pendant and their mono- and dinuclear Zn(II), Cu(II), and Ni(II) complexes have been synthesized and characterized. The pKa values of water molecules coordinated to the complexed metal ions were determined by potentiometric pH titrations and vary from 7.7 to 11.2, depending on the metal-ion and ligand properties. The X-ray structure of [Zn2L2]mu-OH(ClO4)3.CH3CN.H2O shows each Zn(II) ion in a tetrahedral geometry, binding to three N atoms of cyclen (the average distance of Zn-N = 2.1 A) and having a mu-OH bridge at the apical site linking the two metal ions (the average distance of Zn-O- = 1.9 A). The distance between the Zn(II) ion and the fourth N atom is 2.6 A. All Zn(II) complexes promote the hydrolysis of 4-nitrophenyl acetate (NA) under physiological conditions, while those of Cu(II) and Ni(II) do not have a significant effect on the hydrolysis reaction. The kinetic studies in buffered solutions (0.05 M Tris, HEPES, or CHES, I = 0.1 M, NaCl) at 25 degrees C in the pH range of 6-11 under pseudo-first-order reaction conditions (excess of the metal complex) were analyzed by applying the method of initial rates. Comparison of the second-order pH-independent rate constants (kNA, M-1 s-1) for the mononuclear complexes ZnL1, ZnL3, and ZnL8, which are 0.39, 0.27, and 0.38, respectively, indicates that the heterocyclic moiety improves the rate of hydrolysis up to 4 times over the parent Zn([12]aneN4) complex (kNA = 0.09 M-1 s-1). The reactive species is the Zn(II)-OH- complex, in which the Zn(II)-bound OH- acts as a nucleophile, which attacks intermolecularly the carbonyl group of the acetate ester. For dinuclear complexes Zn2L2, Zn2L4, Zn2L5, Zn2L6, and Zn2L7, the mechanism of the reaction is defined by the degree of cooperation between the metal centers, determined by the spacer length. For Zn2L7, having the longest triaryl spacer, the two metal centers act independently in the hydrolysis; therefore, the reaction rate is twice as high as the rate of the mononuclear analogue (kNA = 0.78 M-1 s-1). The complexes with a monoaryl spacer show saturation kinetics with the formation of a Michaelis-Menten adduct. Their hydrolysis rates are 40 times higher than that of the Zn[12]aneN4 system (kNA approximately 4 M-1 s-1). Zn2L6 is a hybrid between these two mechanisms; a clear saturation curve is not visible nor are the metal cores completely independent from one another. Some of the Zn(II) complexes show a higher hydrolytic activity under physiological conditions compared to other previously reported complexes of this type.

Abstract
The chelate ligand tris[(1-vinylimidazol-2-yl)methyl]amine (5) was synthesized in five steps from commercially available starting materials. Upon reaction with ZnCl2 or CuCl2 in the presence of NH4PF6, the complexes [Zn5Cl]PF6 (6) and [Cu5Cl]PF6 (7) were obtained. The structure of both complexes was determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Immobilization of 6 and 7 was achieved by co-polymerization with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate. The supported complexes P6-Zn and P7-Cu were found to be efficient catalysts for the hydrolysis of bis(p-nitrophenyl)phosphate (BNPP) at 50 degrees C. At pH 9.5, the heterogeneous catalyst P7-Cu was 56 times more active than the homogeneous catalyst 7. Partitioning effects, which increase the local concentration of BNPP in the polymer, are shown to contribute to the enhanced activity of the immobilized catalyst.
