Quantitative geometric descriptions of the belt iron atoms of the iron-molybdenum cofactor of nitrogenase and synthetic iron(II) model complexes

Mechanism of Nitrogen-Carbon Bond Formation from Iron(IV) Disilylhydrazido Intermediates during N2 Reduction

We recently reported a reaction sequence that activates C-H bonds in simple arenes as well as the N-N triple bond in N₂, delivering the aryl group to N₂ to form a new N-C bond (Nature 2020, 584, 221). This enables the transformation of abundant feedstocks (arenes and N₂) into N-containing organic compounds. The key N-C bond forming step occurs upon partial silylation of N₂. However, the pathway through which reduction, silylation, and migration occurred was unknown. Here, we describe synthetic, structural, magnetic, spectroscopic, kinetic, and computational studies that elucidate the steps of this transformation. N₂ must be silylated twice at the distal N atom before aryl migration can occur, and sequential silyl radical and silyl cation addition is a kinetically competent pathway to a formally iron(IV)-NN(SiMe₃)₂ intermediate that can be isolated at low temperature. Kinetic studies show its first-order conversion to the migrated product, and DFT calculations indicate a concerted transition state for migration. The electronic structure of the formally iron(IV) intermediate is examined using DFT and CASSCF calculations, which reveal contributions from iron(II) and iron(III) resonance forms with oxidized NNSi₂ ligands. The depletion of electron density from the Fe-coordinated N atom makes it electrophilic enough to accept the incoming aryl group. This new pathway for the N-C bond formation offers a method for functionalizing N₂ using organometallic chemistry.

Sulfur-Ligated [2Fe-2C] Clusters as Synthetic Model Systems for Nitrogenase

Metal clusters featuring carbon and sulfur donors have coordination environments comparable to the active site of nitrogenase enzymes. Here, we report a series of di-iron clusters supported by the dianionic yldiide ligands, in which the Fe sites are bridged by two μ2-C atoms and four pendant S donors.The [L2Fe2] (L = {[Ph2P(S)]2C}2-) cluster is isolable in two oxidation levels, all-ferrous Fe2II and mixed-valence FeIIFeIII. The mixed-valence cluster displays two peaks in the Mössbauer spectra, indicating slow electron transfer between the two sites. The addition of the Lewis base 4-dimethylaminopyridine to the Fe2II cluster results in coordination with only one of the two Fe sites, even in the presence of an excess base. Conversely, the cluster reacts with 8 equiv of isocyanide tBuNC to give a monometallic complex featuring a new C-C bond between the ligand backbone and the isocyanide. The electronic structure descriptions of these complexes are further supported by X-ray absorption and resonant X-ray emission spectroscopies.

Cis-Divacant Octahedral Fe(II) in a Dimensionally Reduced Family of 2-(Pyridin-2-yl)pyrrolide Complexes

Four-coordinate transition-metal complexes can adopt a diverse array of coordination geometries, with square planar and tetrahedral coordination being the most prevalent. Previously, we reported the synthesis of a trinuclear Fe(II) complex, Fe3TPM2, supported by a 3-fold-symmetric 2-pyridylpyrrolide ligand [i.e., tris(5-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)methane] that featured a rare cis-divacant octahedral (CDO) geometry at each Fe(II) center. Here, a series of truncated 2-pyridylpyrrolide ligands are described that support mono- and binuclear Fe(II) complexes that also exhibit CDO geometries. Metalation of the tetradentate ligand bis[5-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-2-yl]methane (H2BPM) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) results in the binuclear complex Fe2(BPM)2(THF)2 in which both Fe(II) ions are octahedrally coordinated. The coordinated THF solvent ligands are labile: THF dissociation leads to Fe2(BPM)2, which features five-coordinate Fe(II) ions. The Fe-Fe distance in these binuclear complexes can be elongated by ligand methylation. Metalation of bis[5-(6-methylpyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-2-yl]methane (H2BPMMe) in THF leads to the formation of four-coordinate, CDO Fe(II) centers in Fe(BPMMe)2. Further ligand truncation affords bidentate ligands 2-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine (PyrPyrrH) and 2-methyl-6-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine (PyrMePyrrH). Metalation of these ligands in THF affords six-coordinate complexes Fe(PyrPyrr)2(THF)2 and Fe(PyrMePyrr)2(THF)2. Dissociation of labile solvent ligands provides access to four-coordinate Fe(II) complexes. Ligand disproportionation at Fe(PyrPyrr)2 results in the formation of Fe(PyrPyrr)3 and Fe(0). Ligand methylation suppresses this disproportionation and enables isolation of Fe(PyrMePyrr)2, which is rigorously CDO. Complete ligand truncation, by separating the 2-pyridylpyrrolide ligands into the constituent monodentate pyridyl and pyrrolide donors, affords Fe(Pyr)2(Pyrr)2 in which Fe(II) is tetrahedrally coordinated. Computational analysis indicates that the potential energy surface that dictates the coordination geometry in this family of four-coordinate complexes is fairly flat in the vicinity of CDO coordination. These synthetic studies provide the structural basis to explore the implications of CDO geometry on Fe-catalyzed reactions.

Iron(II)-alkoxide and -aryloxide complexes of a tris(thioether)borate ligand: synthesis, molecular structures, and implications on the origin of instability of their iron(II)-catecholate counterpart

The phenyltris[(tert-butylthio)methyl]borate ligand, [PhTt^tBu], has been studied extensively as a platform for coordination, organometallic, and bioinorganic chemistry, especially with 3d metals. While [PhTt^tBu]Co(3,5-DBCatH) (3,5-DBCatH is 3,5-di-tert-butylcatecholate), a Co^II-monoanionic catecholate complex, was successfully isolated to model the active site of cobalt(II)-substituted homoprotocatechuate 2,3-dioxygenase (Co-HPCD) [Wang et al. (2019). Inorg. Chim. Acta, 488, 49-55], its iron(II) counterpart, [PhTt^tBu]Fe(3,5-DBCatH), was not accessible via similar synthetic routes. Switching the nucleophile from catecholate to alkoxide or aryloxide, however, led to the successful isolation of three highly air-sensitive Fe^II-alkoxide and -aryloxide complexes, namely, (triphenylmethoxo){tris[(tert-butylsulfanyl)methyl]phenylborato-κ³S,S',S''}iron(II), [Fe(C₂₁H₃₈BS₃)(C₁₉H₁₅O)], (2), (2,6-dimethylphenolato){tris[(tert-butylsulfanyl)methyl]phenylborato-κ³S,S',S''}iron(II), [Fe(C₂₁H₃₈BS₃)(C₈H₉O)], (3), and bis{μ-tris[(tert-butylsulfanyl)methyl]phenylborato-κ³S,S':S''}bis[(phenolato-κO)iron(II)] toluene disolvate, [Fe₂(C₂₁H₃₈BS₃)₂(C₆H₅O)₂]·2C₇H₈, (4). In the solid state, compounds (2) and (3) are monomeric, with [PhTt^tBu] acting as a tridentate ligand. In contrast, compound (4) crystallizes as a dimeric complex, wherein each [PhTt^tBu] ligand binds to an iron centre with two thioethers and binds to the other iron centre with the third thioether. The molecular structures of (2)-(4) demonstrate a diversity in the binding modes of [PhTt^tBu] and highlight its potential use for assembling multinuclear complexes. In addition, the successful isolation of (2)-(4), as well as the structural information of a [PhTt^tBu] modification product, namely, bis{μ-tris[(tert-butylsulfanyl)methyl](2-oxidophenolato)borato-κO,O',S,S':O'}dicobalt(II), [Co₂(C₂₁H₃₇BO₂S₃)₂], (5), obtained from the reaction of [PhTt^tBu]CoCl with potassium monoanionic catecholate, shed light on the origin of the instability of [PhTt^tBu]Fe(3,5-DBCatH).

Synthesis, structures, and catalytic efficiency in ring opening polymerization of rac-lactide with tridentate vs. bidentate cobalt(ii), zinc(ii), and cadmium(ii) complexes containing N-substituted N,N-bis((3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)amine ligands

A series of Co(ii), Zn(ii), and Cd(ii) complexes supported by 1-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-N-((3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)-N-(furan-2-ylmethyl)methanamine (L_A) and N,N-bis((3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)-4-isopropylaniline (L_B) were synthesized. The direct chelation of CoCl₂·6H₂O, ZnCl₂, and CdBr₂·4H₂O by the ligands produced [L_nMX₂] (L_n = L_A or L_B; M = Zn or Co, with X = Cl; M = Cd, with X = Br) complexes in high yields. Structural studies revealed that [L_BCoCl₂] and [L_BZnCl₂] adopted distorted tetrahedral geometries, as L_B coordinated the metal centers in a bidentate fashion, while L_A coordinated the metal centers in a tridentate fashion through the nitrogen atoms of the pyrazole and amine moieties, so that [L_ACoCl₂] and [L_AZnCl₂] exhibited trigonal bipyramidal geometries and [L_ACdBr₂] a square pyramidal geometry. [L_BCdBr₂] has two Cd-containing structures per unit cell, whereby one Cd center adopted a distorted tetrahedral geometry and the other exhibited square bipyramidal geometry. The in situ-generated alkyl derivatives of the synthesized complexes were assessed in the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide. Heterotactic polylactides (PLAs) were furnished with all complexes. The [L_BZnCl₂]/MeLi system produced PLA with a superior heterotactic bias (P_r up to 0.94) at −25 °C. PLAs with wide-ranging polydispersity indices (1.16–2.23) and low molecular weights were produced in all cases, irrespective of the specific M(II) center and ancillary ligand utilized.

Co(ii), Zn(ii), and Cd(ii) complexes supported by bis-pyrazolyl ligands were applied to the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide to produce heterotactic polylactides (PLAs) with superior heterotactic bias i.e. P_r up to 0.94 at −25 °C.

Two-State Reactivity in Iron-Catalyzed Alkene Isomerization Confers σ-Base Resistance

A low-coordinate, high spin (S = 3/2) organometallic iron(I) complex is a catalyst for the isomerization of alkenes. A combination of experimental and computational mechanistic studies supports a mechanism in which alkene isomerization occurs by the allyl mechanism. Importantly, while substrate binding occurs on the S = 3/2 surface, oxidative addition to an η¹-allyl intermediate only occurs on the S = 1/2 surface. Since this spin state change is only possible when the alkene substrate is bound, the catalyst has high immunity to typical σ-base poisons due to the antibonding interactions of the high spin state.

Electronic Structures of an [Fe(NNR2)]+/0/- Redox Series: Ligand Noninnocence and Implications for Catalytic Nitrogen Fixation

The intermediacy of metal-NNH₂ complexes has been implicated in the catalytic cycles of several examples of transition-metal-mediated nitrogen (N₂) fixation. In this context, we have shown that triphosphine-supported Fe(N₂) complexes can be reduced and protonated at the distal N atom to yield Fe(NNH₂) complexes over an array of charge and oxidation states. Upon exposure to further H⁺/e^- equivalents, these species either continue down a distal-type Chatt pathway to yield a terminal iron(IV) nitride or instead follow a distal-to-alternating pathway resulting in N-H bond formation at the proximal N atom. To understand the origin of this divergent selectivity, herein we synthesize and elucidate the electronic structures of a redox series of Fe(NNMe₂) complexes, which serve as spectroscopic models for their reactive protonated congeners. Using a combination of spectroscopies, in concert with density functional theory and correlated ab initio calculations, we evidence one-electron redox noninnocence of the "NNMe₂" moiety. Specifically, although two closed-shell configurations of the "NNR₂" ligand have been commonly considered in the literature-isodiazene and hydrazido(2-)-we provide evidence suggesting that, in their reduced forms, the present iron complexes are best viewed in terms of an open-shell [NNR₂]^•- ligand coupled antiferromagnetically to the Fe center. This one-electron redox noninnocence resembles that of the classically noninnocent ligand NO and may have mechanistic implications for selectivity in N₂ fixation activity.

Variable coordination geometries via an amine-tethered-enamidophosphinimine ligand on cobalt

The enamidophosphinimine ligand scaffold decorated with a pendant 2-diethylamino-ethyl group can change its coordination mode upon reaction with hydride reagents or under reducing conditions when coordinated to cobalt.

Effects of Ligand Halogenation on the Electron Localization, Geometry and Spin State of Low-Coordinate (β-Diketiminato)iron Complexes

This contribution explores the influences of incorporating electron-withdrawing CF3 and halide groups into β-diketiminate iron complexes of tetrazene and isocyanide. The synthesis of a new halogenated β-diketimine (LCF3,ClH) was accomplished via two different methods, including a novel microwave-assisted synthesis that improves the yield of the difficult condensation. Treatment of an iron(II) complex of this ligand with reductant and azide gives two diiron complexes with novel tetrazenes as bridging ligands. Structural and Mössbauer data show that the bridging tetrazene is a radical anion. The halogenation of the supporting ligand also influences iron(I) complexes of the type LFe(CNtBu)2, which are low-spin and square-planar with alkyl substituents but high-spin and pseudotetrahedral with halogen substituents. DFT calculations suggest that the changes from halogenation come from a combination of steric and electronic effects, and that the electronic influence of ligand halogenation is minor.

Redox flexibility of iron complexes supported by sulfur-based tris(o-methylenethiophenolato)amine relative to its tripodal oxygen-based congener

Tripodal ligands designed to generate a local C₃ symmetry have resulted in novel types of metal complexes that feature unusual bonding and electronic properties.

N2 activation by an iron complex with a strong electron-donating iminophosphorane ligand

A new tridentate cyclopentane-bridged iminophosphorane ligand, N-(2-diisopropylphosphinophenyl)-P,P-diisopropyl-P-(2-(2,6-diisopropylphenylamido)cyclopent-1-enyl)phosphoranimine (NpNPiPr), was synthesized and used in the preparation of a diiron dinitrogen complex. The reaction of the iron complex FeBr(NpNPiPr) with KC8 under dinitrogen yielded the dinuclear dinitrogen Fe complex [Fe(NpNPiPr)]2(μ-N2), which was characterized by X-ray analysis and resonance Raman and NMR spectroscopies. The X-ray analysis revealed a diiron complex bridged by the dinitrogen molecule, with each metal center coordinated by an NpNPiPr ligand and dinitrogen in a trigonal-monopyramidal geometry. The N–N bond length is 1.184(6) Å, and resonance Raman spectra indicate that the N–N stretching mode ν(14N2/15N2) is 1755/1700 cm–1. The magnetic moment of [Fe(NpNPiPr)]2(μ-N2) in benzene-d6 solution, as measured by 1H NMR spectroscopy by the Evans method, is 6.91μB (S = 3). The Mössbauer spectrum at 78 K showed δ = 0.73 mm/s and ΔEQ = 1.83 mm/s. These findings suggest that the iron ions are divalent with a high-spin configuration and that the N2 molecule has (N═N)2– character. Density functional theory calculations performed on [Fe(NpNPiPr)]2(μ-N2) also suggested that the iron is in a high-spin divalent state and that the coordinated dinitrogen molecule is effectively activated by π back-donation from the two iron ions (dπ) to the dinitrogen molecule (πx* and πy*). This is supported by cooperation between a large negative charge on the iminophosphorane ligand and strong electron donation and effective orbital overlap between the iron dπ orbitals and N2 π* orbitals supplied by the phosphine ligand.

Evaluating molecular cobalt complexes for the conversion of N2 to NH3

Well-defined molecular catalysts for the reduction of N2 to NH3 with protons and electrons remain very rare despite decades of interest and are currently limited to systems featuring molybdenum or iron. This report details the synthesis of a molecular cobalt complex that generates superstoichiometric yields of NH3 (>200% NH3 per Co-N2 precursor) via the direct reduction of N2 with protons and electrons. While the NH3 yields reported herein are modest by comparison to those of previously described iron and molybdenum systems, they intimate that other metals are likely to be viable as molecular N2 reduction catalysts. Additionally, a comparison of the featured tris(phosphine)borane Co-N2 complex with structurally related Co-N2 and Fe-N2 species shows how remarkably sensitive the N2 reduction performance of potential precatalysts is. These studies enable consideration of the structural and electronic effects that are likely relevant to N2 conversion activity, including the π basicity, charge state, and geometric flexibility.

Fe-N2/CO complexes that model a possible role for the interstitial C atom of FeMo-cofactor (FeMoco)

We report here a series of four- and five-coordinate Fe model complexes that feature an axial tri(silyl)methyl ligand positioned trans to a substrate-binding site. This arrangement is used to crudely model a single-belt Fe site of the FeMo-cofactor that might bind N2 at a position trans to the interstitial C atom. Reduction of a trigonal pyramidal Fe(I) complex leads to uptake of N2 and subsequent functionalization furnishes an open-shell Fe-diazenido complex. A related series of five-coordinate Fe-CO complexes stable across three redox states is also described. Spectroscopic, crystallographic, and Density Functional Theory (DFT) studies of these complexes suggest that a decrease in the covalency of the Fe-C(alkyl) interaction occurs upon reduction and substrate binding. This leads to unusually long Fe-C(alkyl) bond distances that reflect an ionic Fe-C bond. The data presented are contextualized in support of a hypothesis wherein modulation of a belt Fe-C interaction in the FeMo-cofactor facilitates substrate binding and reduction.

Sensitivity of X-ray core spectroscopy to changes in metal ligation: a systematic study of low-coordinate, high-spin ferrous complexes

In order to assess the sensitivity and complementarity of X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopies for determining changes in the metal ligation sphere, a systematic experimental and theoretical study of iron model complexes has been carried out. A series of high-spin ferrous complexes, in which the ligation sphere has been varied from a three-coordinate complex, [L(tBu)Fe(SPh)] (1) (where L(tBu) = bulky β-diketiminate ligand; SPh = phenyl thiolate) to four-coordinate complexes [L(tBu)Fe(SPh)(X)] (where X = CN(t)Bu (2); 1-methylimidazole (3); or N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) (4)), has been investigated using a combination of Fe K-edge X-ray absorption (XAS) and Kβ X-ray emission (XES) spectroscopies. The Fe K XAS pre-edge and edge of all four complexes are consistent with a high-spin ferrous assignment, with the largest differences in the pre-edge intensities attributed to changes in covalency of the fourth coordination site. The X-ray emission spectra show pronounced changes in the valence to core region (V2C) as the identity of the coordinated ligand is varied. The experimental results have been correlated to density functional theory (DFT) calculations, to understand key molecular orbital contributions to the observed absorption and emission features. The calculations also have been extended to a series of hypothetical high-spin iron complexes to understand the sensitivity of XAS and XES techniques to different ligand protonation states ([L(tBu)Fe(II)(SPh)(NHn)](3-n) (n = 3, 2, 1, 0)), metal oxidation states [L(tBu)Fe(SPh)(N)](n-) (n = 3, 2, 1), and changes in the ligand identity [L(tBu)Fe(IV)(SPh)(X)](n-) (X = C(4-), N(3-), O(2-); n = 2, 1, 0). This study demonstrates that XAS pre-edge data have greater sensitivity to changes in oxidation state, while valence to core (V2C) XES data provide a more sensitive probe of ligand identity and protonation state. The combination of multiple X-ray spectroscopic methods with DFT results thus has the potential to provide for detailed characterization of complex inorganic systems in both chemical and biological catalysis.

Ligand effects on hydrogen atom transfer from hydrocarbons to three-coordinate iron imides

A new β-diketiminate ligand with 2,4,6-tri(phenyl)phenyl N-substituents provides protective bulk around the metal without exposing any weak C-H bonds. This ligand improves the stability of reactive iron(III) imido complexes with Fe═NAd and Fe═NMes functional groups (Ad = 1-adamantyl; Mes = mesityl). The new ligand gives iron(III) imido complexes that are significantly more reactive toward 1,4-cyclohexadiene than the previously reported 2,6-diisopropylphenyl diketiminate variants. Analysis of X-ray crystal structures implicates Fe═N-C bending, a longer Fe═N bond, and greater access to the metal as potential reasons for the increase in C-H bond activation rates.

Ligand dependence of binding to three-coordinate Fe(II) complexes

A series of three- and four-coordinate iron(II) complexes with nitrogen, chlorine, oxygen, and sulfur ligands is presented. The electronic variation is explored by measuring the association constant of the neutral ligands and the reduction potential of the iron(II) complexes. Varying the neutral ligand gives large changes in K(eq), which decrease in the order CN(t)Bu > pyridine >2-picoline > DMF > MeCN > THF > PPh(3). These differences can be attributed to a mixture of steric effects and electronic effects (both sigma-donation and pi-backbonding). The binding constants and the reduction potentials are surprisingly insensitive to changes in an anionic spectator ligand. This suggests that three-coordinate iron(II) complexes may have similar binding trends as proposed three-coordinate iron(II) intermediates in the FeMoco of nitrogenase, even though the anionic spectator ligands in the synthetic complexes differ from the sulfides in the FeMoco.

Analytical methods for calculating Continuous Symmetry Measures and the Chirality Measure

We provide analytical solutions of the Continuous Symmetry Measure (CSM) equation for several symmetry point-groups, and for the associated Continuous Chirality Measure (CCM), which are quantitative estimates of the degree of a symmetry-point group or chirality in a structure, respectively. We do it by solving analytically the problem of finding the minimal distance between the original structure and the result obtained by operating on it all of the operations of a specific G symmetry point group. Specifically, we provide solutions for the symmetry measures of all of the improper rotations point group symmetries, S(n), including the mirror (S(1), C(S)), inversion (S(2), C(i)) as well as the higher S(n)s (n > 2 is even) point group symmetries, for the rotational C(2) point group symmetry, for the higher rotational C(n) symmetries (n > 2), and finally for the C(nh) symmetry point group. The chirality measure is the minimal of all S(n) measures.

Structural variation in copper(I) complexes with pyridylmethylamide ligands: structural analysis with a new four-coordinate geometry index, tau4

Four Cu(I) complexes were synthesized with a family of pyridylmethylamide ligands, HL(R) [HL(R) = N-(2-pyridylmethyl)acetamide, R = null; 2,2-dimethyl-N-(2-pyridylmethyl)propionamide, R = Me(3); 2,2,2-triphenyl-N-(2-pyridylmethyl)acetamide, R = Ph(3))]. Complexes 1-3 were synthesized from the respective ligand and [Cu(CH(3)CN)(4)]PF(6) in a 2 : 1 molar ratio: [Cu(HL)(2)]PF(6) (1), [Cu(2)(HL(Me3))(4)](PF(6))(2) (2), [Cu(HL(Ph3))(2)]PF(6) (3). Complex 4, [Cu(HL)(CH(3)CN)(PPh(3))]PF(6), was synthesized from the reaction of HL with [Cu(CH(3)CN)(4)]PF(6) and PPh(3) in a 1 : 1 : 1 molar ratio. X-Ray crystal structures reveal that complexes 1, 3 and 4 are mononuclear Cu(I) species, while complex 2 is a Cu(I) dimer. The copper ions are four-coordinate with geometries ranging from distorted tetrahedral to seesaw in 1, 2, and 4. Complexes 1 and 2 are very air sensitive and they display similar electrochemical properties. The coordination geometry of complex 3 is nearly linear, two-coordinate. Complex 3 is exceptionally stable with respect to oxidation in the air, and its cyclic voltammetry shows no oxidation wave in the range of 0-1.5 V. The unusual inertness of complex 3 towards oxidation is attributed to the protection from bulky triphenyl substituent of the HL(Ph3) ligand. A new geometric parameter for four-coordinate compounds, tau(4), is proposed as an improved, simple metric for quantitatively evaluating the geometry of four-coordinate complexes and compounds.
