Highly luminescent tetradentate bis-cyclometalated platinum complexes: design, synthesis, structure, photophysics, and electroluminescence application

π-Extended ligands with dual-binding behavior: hindered rotation unlocks unexpected reactivity in cyclometalated Pt complexes

Cyclometalated platinum complexes play a crucial role in catalysis, bioimaging, and optoelectronics. Phenylpyridines are widespread cyclometalating ligands that generate stable and highly emissive Pt complexes. While it is common practice to modify these ligands to fine-tune their photophysical properties, the incorporation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons into the ligand's structure has been largely overlooked. This report describes the cyclometalation of naphthalenyl- and anthracenylpyridine ligands, which has resulted in ten new luminescent PtII and PtIV complexes. These species are enabled by a dual-binding behavior discovered in our polyaromatic-containing ligands. The introduction of naphthalenyl and anthracenyl groups unlocks dual binding modes, with the Pt center bonding to either of two distant carbon atoms within the ligand. These complexes exhibit both symmetric structures with two 5-membered metallacycles and asymmetric structures with 5- and 6-membered metallacycles. This work presents a strategy for the regioselective synthesis of Pt complexes with bespoke structures and photophysical properties. Our findings offer new opportunities in platinum chemistry and beyond, with potential implications for materials and technologies.

A Mononuclear [PtCl(tpy)]PF6 Complex for a Yellow Emitting Solution-Processable Organic Light Emitting Diode

We report square planar mononuclear Pt(II)-complexes of terpyridines in the form of [PtCl(L1/L2)]PF6 as phosphorescent emitters (where L1 = 4-(3-pyridine)2,2':6',2''-terpyridine and L2 = 4'-(3-pyridinyl)-4,4''-di(tert-butyl)-2,2':6'2''-terpyridine). Complex 2 showed emission at 534 nm in the DCM solution with photoluminescence quantum efficiency (ΦPL) = 14%, while in the mCBP host (5-wt % doped), the emission shifted to 584 nm with ΦPL = 37.8% and a phosphorescence lifetime (τphos) of 37.8 μs. Complex 2 in mCBP was used to fabricate a solution-processed phosphorescent organic light-emitting diode (PhOLED) which showed maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) = 7.4% with yellow emission at λEL = 570 nm and exhibited a low efficiency roll-off with an EQE drop to 7.0% at 1000 cd/m2.

Tetradentate Pt(II) Complexes Based on Xylenylamino Linked Dual Pyrazolate Chelates for Organic Light Emitting Diodes

In this work, we report the syntheses of three Pt(II) emitters, namely, Pt4N1, Pt4N2, and Pt4N3, to which their tetradentate chelates were assembled by linking two pyrazolate chelates with a single xylenylamino entity. Functionalization of Pt4N1 was achieved upon the addition of electronegative CF3 substituent on pyridinyl groups and switching to more electron-deficient pyrazinyl groups in giving Pt4N2 and Pt4N3, respectively. The vertically arranged xylenylamino entity has effectively suppressed the inter-molecular π-π stacking and Pt⋅⋅⋅Pt interaction, as shown by the single crystal X-ray structural analyses. Upon fabrication of OLED devices, Pt4N2 and Pt4N3 based devices delivered efficient cyan and green emission, with an EQEmax of 15.2 % and 11.2 %, respectively, affirming the successfulness of the tetradentate chelating strategy.

Antiprotozoal Pt(II) Complexes as Luminophores Bearing Monodentate P/As/Sb-Based Donors: An X-ray Diffractometric, Photoluminescence, and 121Sb-Mössbauer Spectroscopic Study with TD-DFT-Guided Interpretation and Predictive Extrapolation toward Bi

In this study, it is demonstrated that the radiative rate constant of phosphorescent metal complexes can be substantially enhanced using monodentate ancillary ligands containing heavy donor atoms. Thus, the chlorido coligand from a Pt(II) complex bearing a monoanionic tridentate C^N*N luminophore ([PtLCl]) was replaced by triphenylphosphane (PPh3) and its heavier pnictogen congeners (i.e., PnPh3 to yield [PtL(PnPh3)]). Due to the high tridentate-ligand-centered character of the excited states, the P-related radiative rate is rather low while showing a significant boost upon replacement of the P donor by heavier As- and Sb-based units. The syntheses of the three complexes containing PPh3, AsPh3, and SbPh3 were completed by unambiguous characterization of the clean products using exact mass spectrometry, X-ray diffractometry, bidimensional NMR, and 121Sb-Mössbauer spectroscopy (for [PtL(SbPh3)]) as well as steady state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopies. Hence, it was shown that the hybridization defects of the Vth main-group atoms can be overcome by complexation with the Pt center. Notably, the enhancement of the radiative rate constants mediated by heavier coligands was achieved without significantly influencing the character of the excited states. A rationalization of the results was achieved by TD-DFT. Even though the Bi-based homologue was not accessible due to phenylation side reactions, the experimental data allowed a reasonable extrapolation of the structural features whereas the hybridization defects and the excited state properties related to the Bi-species and its phosphorescence rate can be predicted by theory. The three complexes showed an interesting antiprotozoal activity, which was unexpectedly notorious for the P-containing complex. This work could pave the road toward new efficient materials for optoelectronics and novel antiparasitic drugs.

Phosphorescent Platinum(II) Complexes with a Spiro-fused Xanthene Unit: Synthesis and Photophysical Properties

Novel platinum(II) complexes, derived from the spiro[fluorene-9,9'-xanthene] (SFX) motif, were synthesized and combined with different auxiliary ligands such as acetylacetonate (acac), bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)propane-1,3-dionate (mesacac) and dihydrobis(3,5-dimethylpyrazole-1-yl) borate. The final products were obtained in yields of up to 36 % and characterized by NMR, X-ray and combustion analysis. These complexes have structured green-blue emission spectra with Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIExy) coordinates of (0.21;0.46). Excellent photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) ranging from 87 %-91 % were found. The emission lifetimes vary from 33 μs to 43 μs. Calculations on the B3LYP/6-311++G** level of theory reveal, that the nature of the emissive state is dependent on the positional regioisomerism of the SFX motif. The 2-SFX complexes demonstrate ligand-centered (3LC) emission, while the 2'-SFX regioisomer with the mesacac ligand shows a strong 3MLCT character.

Cyanido-bridged diplatinum(ii) complexes: ligand and solvent effect on aggregation and luminescence

The association of platinum(ii)-based luminophores, which is caused by metal⋯metal and π-π stacking interactions, has been actively exploited in supramolecular construction of photofunctional molecular materials. Herein, we describe a series of bimetallic complexes [{Pt(C^N^/*N)}2(CN)][BAr4F], containing cyanido-bridged cyclometalated Pt(ii) chromophore fragments (HC^N^N = 6-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine, (benzyltriazolyl)-phenylpyridine, and pyrazolyl-phenylpyridine; HC^N*N = N-pentyl-6-phenyl-N-(pyridin-2-yl)pyridin-2-amine; ^/* denote five/six-membered metallocycles). These compounds are intensely phosphorescent at room temperature showing quantum yields up to 0.73 in solution and 0.62 in the solid state, which are generally higher than those of the mononuclear relatives [Pt(C^N^/*N)(CN)]. The complex cations bearing sterically unhindered -C^N^N ligands readily assemble in solution, reaching the tetrameric species [{Pt(C^N^N)}2(CN)]44+ as suggested by diffusion NMR spectroscopy. The size of the aggregates can be regulated by the concentration, temperature, and polarity of the solvent that allows to alter the emission from green to near-IR. In the solid state, the maximum of low-energy luminescence is shifted up to 912 nm. The results show that photophysical properties of discrete complexes and the intermolecular aggregation can be substantially enhanced by utilizing the rigid bimetallic units giving rise to novel dynamic light emitting Pt(ii) systems.

Sterically Hindered Tetradentate [Pt(O^N^C^N)] Emitters with Radiative Decay Rates up to 5.3 × 105 s-1 for Phosphorescent Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with LT95 Lifetime over 9200 h at 1000 cd m-2

Described here are sterically hindered tetradentate [Pt(O^N^C^N)] emitters (Pt-1, Pt-2, and Pt-3) developed for stable and high-performance green phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). These Pt(II) emitters exhibit strong saturated green phosphorescence (λmax = 517-531 nm) in toluene and mCP thin films with emission quantum yields as high as 0.97, radiative rate constants (kr) as high as 4.4-5.3 × 105 s-1 and reduced excimer emission, and with a preferential horizontally oriented transition dipole ratio of up to 84%. Theoretical calculations show that p-(hetero)arene substituents at the periphery of the ligand scaffolds in Pt-1, Pt-2, and Pt-3 can i) enhance the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) between the lower singlet excited states and the T1 state, and S0→Sn (n = 1 or 2) transition dipole moment, and ii) introducing additional SOC activity and the bright 1ILCT[π(carbazole)→π*(N^C^N)] excited state (Pt-2 and Pt-3), which are the main contributors to the increased kr values. Utilizing these tetradentate Pt(II) emitters, green phosphorescent OLEDs are fabricated with narrow-band electroluminescence (FWHM down to 36 nm), high external quantum efficiency, current efficiency up to 27.6% and 98.7 cd A-1, and an unprecedented device lifetime (LT95) of up to 9270 h at 1000 cd m-2 under laboratory conditions.

Responsive macrocyclic and supramolecular structures powered by platinum

Humankind's manipulation of platinum dates back more than two millennia to burial objects. Since then, its use has evolved from purely decorative purposes in jewelry to more functional applications such as in catalysts, pharmaceuticals, and bioimaging agents. Platinum offers a range of properties arguably unmatched by any other metal, including electroactivity, photoluminescence, chromic behaviour, catalysis, redox reactivity, photoreactivity, and stimuli-controlled intermetallic interactions. The vast body of knowledge generated by the exploration of these and other properties of platinum has recently merged with other areas of chemistry such as supramolecular and host-guest chemistry. This has shown us that platinum can incorporate its responsive character into supramolecular assemblies (e.g., macrocycles and polymers) to produce materials with tailorable functions and responses. In this Perspective Article, we cover some platinum-powered supramolecular structures reported by us and others, hoping to inspire new and exciting discoveries in the field.

Luminescent Platinum(II) Complexes with Terdentate N∧C∧C Ligands

The synthesis, structure, and luminescence of Pt(II) complexes of the type [Pt(N∧C∧C)(L)] are reported, where N∧C∧C is a terdentate ligand resulting from the cycloplatination of 2-(3,5-diphenoxyphenyl)pyridine or 2-(4,4″-dimethyl-[1,1':3',1″-terphenyl]-5'-yl)pyridine, and L represents a monodentate ancillary ligand, which can be γ-picoline, 4-pyridinecarboxaldehyde, PPh3, n-butyl or 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide, CO, or the N-heterocyclic carbenes 1-butyl-3-methylimidazol-2-ylidene or 4-butyl-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene. Derivatives bearing CO, isocyanides, or carbenes showed the highest stabilities in solution, whereas the pyridine and PPh3 derivatives establish ligand-exchange equilibria in acetonitrile. Different supramolecular structures are observed in the solid state, which largely depend on the nature of the ancillary ligand. Isocyanides and CO favor π interactions between the aromatic rings, metallophilic Pt···Pt contacts, or a combination of both. In contrast, pyridine ligands may lead to bimolecular assemblies driven by C-H···O, C-H···Pt, or C-H/π hydrogen bonds. Luminescence was examined in fluid solution, poly(methyl methacrylate) matrices, and the solid state at 298 K, and in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran glasses at 77 K. The majority of derivatives show highly efficient emissions from 3ILCT/MLCT or 3ILCT/MLCT/LLCT excited states of monomeric species. The formation of excimers and different types of emissive aggregates are demonstrated, which lead to red-shifted emissions of different origins and characteristics depending on the involved noncovalent interactions.

Pt(II) Complexes with Tetradentate C^N*N^C Luminophores: From Supramolecular Interactions to Temperature-Sensing Materials with Memory and Optical Readouts

A series of four regioisomeric Pt(II) complexes (PtLa-n and PtLb-n) bearing tetradentate luminophores as dianionic ligands were synthesized. Hence, both classes of cyclometallating chelators were decorated with three n-hexyl (n = 6) or n-dodecyl (n = 12) chains. The new compounds were unambiguously characterized by means of multiple NMR spectroscopies and mass spectrometry. Steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy as well quantum chemical calculations show that the effect of the regioisomerism on the emission colour and on the deactivation rate constants can be correlated with the participation of the Pt atom on the excited state. The thermal properties of the complexes were studied by DSC, POM and temperature-dependent steady-state photoluminescence spectroscopy. Three of the four complexes (PtLa-12, PtLb-6 and PtLb-12) present an intriguing thermochromism resulting from the responsive metal-metal interactions involving adjacent monomeric units. Each material has different transition temperatures and memory capabilities, which can be tuned at the intermolecular level. Hence, dipole-dipole interactions between the luminophores and disruption of the crystalline packing by the alkyl groups are responsible for the final properties of the resulting materials.

Discrete Mononuclear Platinum(II) Complexes Realize High-Performance Red Phosphorescent OLEDs with EQEs of up to 31.8% and Superb Device Stability

Designing mononuclear platinum(II) complexes that do not rely on intermolecular aggregation for high-performance red organic light-emitting diodes remains a formidable challenge. In this work, three robust red-emitting Pt(II) complexes are created by utilizing a rigid 4-coordination configuration, where the ligands are formed by linking electron-donor of triphenylamine (TPA) moieties with electron-acceptor of pyridine, isoquinoline, and/or δ-carboline units. The thermal stability, electrochemical, and photophysical properties of the complexes are thoroughly examined. The complexes display efficient red phosphorescence, with high photoluminescence quantum yields and short excited lifetimes. The OLEDs dope with these complexes exhibit high maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of up to 31.8% with minimal efficiency roll-off even at high brightness. Significantly, the devices demonstrate exceptional long operational lifetime, with a T90 lifetime of over 14000 h at initial luminance of 1000 cd m-2 , indicating the potential for these complexes to be practically utilizes.

Competition between N,C,N-Pincer and N,N-Chelate Ligands in Platinum(II)

Replacement of the chloride ligand of PtCl{κ3-N,C,N-[py-C6HR2-py]} (R = H (1), Me (2)) and PtCl{κ3-N,C,N-[py-O-C6H3-O-py]} (3) by hydroxido gives Pt(OH){κ3-N,C,N-[py-C6HR2-py]} (R = H (4), Me (5)) and Pt(OH){κ3-N,C,N-[py-O-C6H3-O-py]} (6). These compounds promote deprotonation of 3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazole, 3-(2-pyridyl)-5-methylpyrazole, 3-(2-pyridyl)-5-trifluoromethylpyrazole, and 2-(2-pyridyl)-3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyrrole. The coordination of the anions generates square-planar derivatives, which in solution exist as a unique species or equilibria between isomers. Reactions of 4 and 5 with 3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazole and 3-(2-pyridyl)-5-methylpyrazole provide Pt{κ3-N,C,N-[py-C6HR2-py]}{κ1-N1-[R'pz-py]} (R = H; R' = H (7), Me (8). R = Me; R' = H (9), Me (10)), displaying κ1-N1-pyridylpyrazolate coordination. A 5-trifluoromethyl substituent causes N1-to-N2 slide. Thus, 3-(2-pyridyl)-5-trifluoromethylpyrazole affords equilibria between Pt{κ3-N,C,N-[py-C6HR2-py]}{κ1-N1-[CF3pz-py]} (R = H (11a), Me (12a)) and Pt{κ3-N,C,N-[py-C6HR2-py]}{κ1-N2-[CF3pz-py]} (R = H (11b), Me (12b)). 1,3-Bis(2-pyridyloxy)phenyl allows the chelating coordination of the incoming anions. Deprotonations of 3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazole and its substituted 5-methyl counterpart promoted by 6 lead to equilibria between Pt{κ3-N,C,N-[pyO-C6H3-Opy]}{κ1-N1-[R'pz-py]} (R' = H (13a), Me (14a)) with a κ-N1-pyridylpyrazolate anion, keeping the pincer coordination of the di(pyridyloxy)aryl ligand, and Pt{κ2-N,C-[pyO-C6H3(Opy)]}{κ2-N,N-[R'pz-py]} (R' = H (13c), Me (14c)) with two chelates. Under the same conditions, 3-(2-pyridyl)-5-trifluoromethylpyrazole generates the three possible isomers: Pt{κ3-N,C,N-[pyO-C6H3-Opy]}{κ1-N1-[CF3pz-py]} (15a), Pt{κ3-N,C,N-[pyO-C6H3-Opy]}{κ1-N2-[CF3pz-py]} (15b), and Pt{κ2-N,C-[pyO-C6H3(Opy)]}{κ2-N,N-[CF3pz-py]} (15c). The N1-pyrazolate atom produces a remote stabilizing effect on the chelating form, pyridylpyrazolates being better chelate ligands than pyridylpyrrolates. Accordingly, reactions of 4-6 with 2-(2-pyridyl)-3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyrrole yield Pt{κ3-N,C,N-[py-C6HR2-py]}{κ1-N1-[(CF3)2C4(py)HN]} (R = H (16), Me (17)) or Pt{κ3-N,C,N-[pyO-C6H3-Opy]}{κ1-N1-[(CF3)2C4(py)HN]} (18), displaying κ1-N1-pyrrolate coordination. Complexes 7-10 are efficient green phosphorescent emitters (488-576 nm). In poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films and in dichloromethane, they experience self-quenching, due to molecular stacking. Aggregation occurs through aromatic π-π interactions, reinforced by weak platinum-platinum interactions.

Room-Temperature Phosphorescence from Pd(II) and Pt(II) Complexes as Supramolecular Luminophores: The Role of Self-Assembly, Metal-Metal Interactions, Spin-Orbit Coupling, and Ligand-Field Splitting

The synthesis as well as the structural and photophysical characterization of two isoleptic bis-cyclometalated Pt(II) and Pd(II) complexes, namely [PtL] and [PdL], bearing a tailored dianionic tetradentate ligand (L2-) are reported. The isostructural character and intermolecular interactions of [PtL] and [PdL] were assessed by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. Both complexes show fully ligand-controlled aggregation, demonstrating that a judicious molecular design can tune the photophysical properties. In fact, by introduction of fluorine atoms on defined positions and methoxy groups on complementary sites, metal-metal interactions can be forced by a head-to-tail stacking. Hence, [PtL] shows luminescence from metal-perturbed ligand-centered or from metal-metal-to-ligand charge-transfer triplet states in diluted solutions, in frozen glasses and in crystals, with high photoluminescence quantum yields and long lifetimes in the microsecond range. At room temperature (RT) in concentrated fluid solutions, the palladium analogue [PdL] surprisingly emits luminescence from aggregated species involving supramolecular interactions. Time-resolved photoluminescence and transient absorption spectroscopies demonstrated that ultrafast intersystem crossing occurs for both metals, which outruns any competitive relaxation pathway from the photoexcited singlet state. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the radiationless deactivation can be suppressed in frozen glassy matrices at 77 K and by intermolecular interactions in fluid solutions at RT. In both cases and as indicated by density functional theory calculations, the lowest emissive state acts as an energy trap from which the thermal population of dissociative states with formal occupation of an antibonding Pd-centered 4dx2-y2 orbital is suppressed. This occurs as the energy gap between the emissive and the dark states surpasses kT.

Cyclometalated Spirobifluorene Imidazolylidene Platinum(II) Complexes with Predominant 3LC Emissive Character and High Photoluminescence Quantum Yields

Two novel bidentate C^C*_spiro cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes comprising a spiro-conjugated bifluorene ligand and different β-diketonate auxiliary ligands are synthesized and characterized. Their preparation employs a robust and elaborate synthetic protocol commencing with an N-heterocyclic carbene precursor. Structural characterization by means of NMR techniques and solid-state structures validate the proposed and herein presented molecular scaffolds. Photophysical studies, including laser flash photolysis methods, reveal an almost exclusively ligand-centered triplet state, governed by the C^C*_spiro-NHC ligand. The high triplet energies and the long triplet lifetimes in the order of 30 μs in solution make the complexes good candidates for light-emitting diode-driven photocatalysis, as initial energy transfer experiments reveal. In-depth time-dependent density functional theory investigations are in excellent accordance with our spectroscopic findings. The title compounds are highly emissive in the bluish-green color region with quantum yields of up to 87% in solid-state measurements.

Aggregation-Induced Ignition of Near-Infrared Phosphorescence of Non-Symmetric [Pt(C^N*N'^C')] Complex in Poly(caprolactone)-based Block Copolymer Micelles: Evaluating the Alternative Design of Near-Infrared Oxygen Biosensors

In the present work, we described the preparation and characterization of the micelles based on amphiphilic poly(ε-caprolactone-block-ethylene glycol) block copolymer (PCL-b-PEG) loaded with non-symmetric [Pt(C^N*N'^C')] complex (Pt1) (where C^N*N'^C': 6-(phenyl(6-(thiophene-2-yl)pyridin-2-yl)amino)-2-(tyophene-2-yl)nicotinate). The obtained nanospecies displayed the ignition of near-infrared (NIR) phosphorescence upon an increase in the content of the platinum complexes in the micelles, which acted as the major emission component at 12 wt.% of Pt1. Emergence of the NIR band at 780 nm was also accompanied by a 3-fold growth of the quantum yield and an increase in the two-photon absorption cross-section that reached the value of 450 GM. Both effects are believed to be the result of progressive platinum complex aggregation inside hydrophobic poly(caprolactone) cores of block copolymer micelles, which has been ascribed to aggregation induced emission (AIE). The resulting phosphorescent (Pt1@PCL-b-PEG) micelles demonstrated pronounced sensitivity towards molecular oxygen, the key intracellular bioanalyte. The detailed photophysical analysis of the AIE phenomena revealed that the NIR emission most probably occurred due to the excimeric excited state of the 3MMLCT character. Evaluation of the Pt1@PCL-b-PEG efficacy as a lifetime intracellular oxygen biosensor carried out in CHO-K1 live cells demonstrated the linear response of the probe emission lifetime towards this analyte accompanied by a pronounced influence of serum albumin on the lifetime response. Nevertheless, Pt1@PCL-b-PEG can serve as a semi-quantitative lifetime oxygen nanosensor. The key result of this study consists of the demonstration of an alternative approach for the preparation of NIR biosensors by taking advantage of in situ generation of NIR emission due to the nanoconfined aggregation of Pt (II) complexes inside the micellar nanocarriers.

Room-temperature luminescence from Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes: from mechanochromic crystals to flexible polymer matrices

A series of Pd(II) (PdLOMe, PdLOHex) and Pt(II) (PtLOMe, PtLOHex) complexes bearing tetradentate ligands as dianionic luminophores were synthesized. Hence, the cyclometallating chelators were alternatively decorated with two n-hexyloxy (LOHex) or two methoxy (LOMe) moieties to promote crystallization and processability. The new compounds were unambiguously characterized by means of multiple NMR spectroscopies and mass spectrometry as well as by single crystal X-ray diffractometric analysis (PtLOMe and PdLOMe). Steady state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopic studies were carried out in crystalline phases, in fluid solutions at room temperature, in frozen glassy matrices at 77 K and in a flexible polymeric matrix (PMMA). PtLOMe presents an intriguing mechanochromism resulting from the responsive metal-metal interactions involving adjacent monomeric units. Incorporation of the Pd(II) complexes into the polymeric matrix boosts their photophysical properties by stiffening of the coordination environment while reducing non-radiative deactivation pathways mediated by dissociative metal-centred states, which also become thermally inaccessible at 77 K.

Luminescent cyclometalated alkynylplatinum(II) complexes with 1,3-di(pyrimidin-2-yl)benzene ligands: synthesis, electrochemistry, photophysics and computational studies

In this article, we report on a series of cyclometalated chloro- and alkynyl-platinum(II) complexes bearing various tridentate N^C^N-cyclometalated ligands derived from 1,3-bis(pyrimidin-2-yl)benzene. The X-ray crystal structures of two alkynyl-platinum(II) complexes were determined and other structures were DFT-calculated. Electrochemical and DFT-computational studies suggest a ligand-centred reduction on the R¹-substituted N^C^N ligand, whereas oxidation likely occurs either on the Pt-phenylacetylide moiety and/or the cyclometalated ligand. In CH₂Cl₂ solution at room temperature, the complexes show phosphorescent emissions ranging from green to orange, depending on the R¹ and R² substituents on the ligands. In KBr solid state matrix, excluding complexes bearing a trifluoromethyl substituted ligand, all compounds exhibit red emission. The presence of an alkynyl ancillary ligand has limited influence on absorption and emission spectra except in the case of the complex with the strongly electron-donating diphenylamino R² substituent on the alkynyl ligand, for which a significant red-shift was observed. The alkynyl Pt(II) complex with OMe groups as both R¹ and R² substituents shows the best emission quantum yield (0.81 in CH₂Cl₂ solution) in this series. The full series of DFT calculated band gaps correlated generally well with the electrochemical and absorption data and reasonably model the impact of the substituents on the electronics of these complexes.

Cerocene and Lanthanocene Chalcogenides: Synthesis, Structure, and Luminescence

A series of lanthanide chalcogenides {[η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln}₂(μ-η²:η²-Te₂) (Ln = Ce 1, La 2), {[η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln(THF)}₂(μ-Se) (Ln = Ce 3, La 4), and {[η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln(THF)}₂(μ-Te) (Ln = Ce 5, La 6) can be readily obtained by the reaction of the alkyl complexes [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln(CH₂C₆H₄-o-NMe₂) with elemental selenium or tellurium in the presence of 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (9-BBN). The reaction of the alkyl complexes [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln(CH₂C₆H₄-o-NMe₂) with 9-BBN in 1:2 molar ratio afforded the lanthanide (cyclooctane-1,5-diyl)dihydroborate complexes [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ln[(μ-H)₂BC₈H₁₄] (Ln = Ce 7, La 8) concomitant with the (Me₂N-o-C₆H₄CH₂)BC₈H₁₄ release, indicating that [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂LnH may be the reactive species for the synthesis of lanthanide chalcogenides. All the new compounds were characterized by various spectroscopic methods, and their solid-state structures were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Luminescence spectroscopy was also employed to characterize complexes 1-6. The Ce(III) complexes 3 and 5 display distinct luminescence properties at room temperature, as compared to the corresponding La(III) complexes 4 and 6. The complex {[η⁵-1,3-(Me₃C)₂C₅H₃]₂Ce(THF)}₂(μ-Te) (5) exhibits unexpectedly red emission in solution which is found to depend strongly on the excitation wavelength.

Metal-Metal-to-Ligand Charge Transfer in Pt(II) Dimers Bridged by Pyridyl and Quinoline Thiols

The investigation of two distinct species of square planar dinuclear Pt(II) dimers based on anti-[Pt(C^∧N)(μ-N^∧S)]₂, where C^∧N is either 2-phenylpyridine (ppy) or benzo(h)quinoline (bzq) and N^∧S is pyridine-2-thiol (pyt), 6-methylpyridine-2-thiol (Mpyt), or 2-quinolinethiol (2QT), is presented. Each molecule was thoroughly characterized with electronic structure calculations, static UV-vis and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry, along with transient absorbance and time-gated PL experiments. These visible absorbing chromophores feature metal-metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MMLCT) excited states that originate from intramolecular d⁸-d⁸ metal-metal σ-interactions and are manifested in the ground- and excited-state properties of these molecules. All five molecules reported (anti-[Pt(ppy)(μ-Mpyt)]₂ could not be isolated), three of which are newly conceived here, possess electronic absorptions past 500 nm and high quantum yield PL emission with spectra extending into the far red (λ_em > 700 nm), originating from the charge-transfer state in each instance. Each chromophore displays excited-state decay kinetics adequately modeled by single exponentials as recorded using dynamic absorption and PL experiments; each technique yields similar decay kinetics. The combined data illustrate that pyridyl and quinoline-thiolates in conjunction with select cyclometalates represent classes of MMLCT chromophores that exhibit excited-state properties suitable for promoting light-energized chemical reactions and provide a molecular platform suitable for evaluating coherence phenomena in transient metal-metal bond-forming photochemistry.

Multiresponsive Cyclometalated Crown Ether Bearing a Platinum(II) Metal Center

Multiresponsive materials can adapt to numerous changes in their local environment, which makes them highly valuable for various applications. Although nanostructured and polymeric multiresponsive materials are plentiful, small-molecule analogues are scarce. This work presents a compact cyclometalated platinum(II) complex that bears a crown ether cavity (18C6-Pt^II); the intimate ring/emitter connectivity is key to unlocking multiresponsiveness. Complex 18C6-Pt^II responds to (i) cationic guests, producing changes in luminescence in both solution and the solid state, (ii) solvent molecules, which perturb the packing of the complex in the solid state and cause reversible color changes, and (iii) solvent polarity, which leads to controlled aggregation. These responses may enable 18C6-Pt^II to function as a sensor for ions and solvents, or as a functional unit for the fabrication of hybrid supramolecular polymers and metallogels.

Cyclometalated Platinum(II) Complexes with Donor-Acceptor-Containing Bidentate Ligands and Their Application Studies as Organic Resistive Memories

A series of heteroleptic cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes, [Pt(C^N)(O^O)], (1-10) with various donors and acceptors has been synthesized and characterized by ¹ H NMR spectroscopy, elemental analyses, infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The X-ray structure of 2 has also been determined. The electrochemical and photophysical properties of the platinum(II) complexes were studied. These experimental results have been supported by computational studies. Furthermore, two of the complexes have been employed as the active material in the fabrication of resistive memory devices, exhibiting stable binary memory performance with low operating voltage, high ON/OFF ratio and long retention time.

Enhanced phosphorescence of Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes adsorbed onto Laponite for optical sensing of triplet molecular dioxygen in water

Two isoleptic complexes involving Pd(II) and Pt(II) centres with a tetradentate luminophoric ligand were adsorbed onto Laponite (LAP), yielding H2O-dispersible nanohybrids with remarkable photoexcited state properties. The adsorption promoted rigidification of the coordination compounds and suppression of roto-vibrational deactivation pathways, thus enhancing the performance of the molecular species. Interestingly, room temperature phosphorescence was achieved in the case of the Pd(II)-containing nanohybrid along with a marked 3O2 sensitivity, whereas the photoluminescence of the Pt(II)-based material showed only a mild dependence on the presence of 3O2 while reaching up to 37% quantum yield.

The Observation of Interchain Motion in Self-Assembled Crystalline Platinum(II) Complexes: An Exquisite Case but By No Means the Only One in Molecular Solids

In organic and organometallic solids, upon electronic excitation, most intermolecular structural relaxations follow a pathway along the π-π stacking direction or metal-metal bond with significant coupling strength. Differently, we discovered that the self-assembled platinum(II) complexes, Pt(fppz)₂, exhibit an unusual interchain contraction. The ground-state and excited-state multiple local minima were distinguished by temperature-dependent excitation/emission spectra, indicating the existence of multiple local minima. The time-resolved emission decay revealed the excited-state structural relaxation lifetime with τ_obs = 41 ns at 298 K. Temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the packing geometries contract 0.6 Å along the interchain direction (a-axis) at 50 K compared to the geometries at 298 K. Such structural displacements render the slow internal conversion rate in the excited states. We thus demonstrate the correlation between the packing geometries and the excited-state dynamics of the self-assembled Pt(II) complexes, shedding light on the unique direction of interchain structural deformation of the molecular aggregates.

Tetradentate Platinum(II) and Palladium(II) Complexes Containing Fused 6/6/6 or 6/6/5 Metallocycles with Azacarbazolylcarbazole-Based Ligands

A series of novel tetradentate Pt(II) and Pd(II) complexes containing fused 6/6/6 or 6/6/5 metallocycles employing azacarbazolylcarbazole (ACzCz)-based ligands was developed. Systematic experimental and theoretical studies suggest that both the ligand structures and the central metal ions have great influences on the electrochemical and photophysical properties of the complexes. The time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations and natural transition orbital (NTO) analyses reveal that the Pt(II) complexes possess 10.8-15.2% metal-to-ligand charge transfer (³MLCT) mixed with ligand-centered (³LC) characters, by contrast, the Pd(II) complexes exhibit significantly decreased 4.2-7.1% ³MLCT characters and enhanced ³LC compositions. All of the Pt(II) and Pd(II) complexes possess various channels for the intersystem crossing (ISC) on the basis of small energy gaps ΔE_S1-Tn and matching transition orbital compositions; moreover, Pd(ACzCz-1) and Pd(ACzCz-2) also possess efficient reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) to show both delayed fluorescence (DF) and phosphorescence in PMMA films at room temperature (RT). Pt(ACzCz-3) has Φ_PL values of 57% with a τ of 5.1 μs in dichloromethane at RT and 50% with 3.9 μs in PMMA at RT. Notably, Pd(ACzCz-1) exhibits ultralong low-temperature phosphorescence with a τ of 1307 μs. Pt(ACzCz-2)-based green OLED employing 26mCPy as the host demonstrated a peak EQE of 8.2% and a L_max of 24065 cd/m².

Highly efficient implementation of the analytical gradients of pseudospectral time-dependent density functional theory

The accuracy and efficiency of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) excited state gradient calculations using the pseudospectral method are presented. TDDFT excited state geometry optimizations of the G2 test set molecules, the organic fluorophores with large Stokes shifts, and the Pt-complexes show that the pseudospectral method gives average errors of 0.01-0.1 kcal/mol for the TDDFT excited state energy, 0.02-0.06 pm for the bond length, and 0.02-0.12° for the bond angle when compared to the results from conventional TDDFT. TDDFT gradient calculations of fullerenes (C_n, n up to 540) with the B3LYP functional and 6-31G** basis set show that the pseudospectral method provides 8- to 14-fold speedups in the total wall clock time over the conventional methods. The pseudospectral TDDFT gradient calculations with a diffuse basis set give higher speedups than the calculations for the same basis set without diffuse functions included.

Conjugated Pt(II) Complexes as Luminescence-Switch-On Reporters Addressing the Microenvironment of Bacterial Biofilms

In this work, the synthesis, structural and photophysical characterization of six phosphorescent H₂O-soluble Pt(II) complexes are reported while addressing their emission maxima, photoluminescence quantum yields (Φ_L), lifetimes (τ), aggregation tendency, and microenvironment sensitivity as a function of the substitution pattern on the main tridentate luminophore. Different ancillary ligands, namely, a trisulfonated phosphane and maltohexaose-conjugated pyridines (with or without amide bridges), were introduced and evaluated for the realization of switch-on-photoluminescent labels reporting on the microenvironment sensed in biofilms of Gram⁺ and Gram^- models, namely, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. With the aid of confocal luminescence micro(spectro)scopy, we observed that selected complexes specifically interact with the biofilms while leaving planktonic cells unlabeled. By using photoluminescence lifetime imaging microscopy, excited-state lifetimes within S. aureus biofilms were measured. The photoluminescence intensities were drastically boosted, and the excited state lifetimes were significantly prolonged upon binding to the viscous biofilm matrix, mainly due to the suppression of radiationless deactivation pathways upon shielding from physical quenching processes, such as interactions with solvent molecules and ³O₂. The best performances were attained for non-aggregating complexes with maltohexaose targeting units and without amide bridges. Notably, in the absence of the maltodextrin, a hydrophobic adamantyl moiety suffices to attain a sizeable labeling capacity. Moreover, photoluminescence studies showed that selected complexes can also effectively interact with E. coli biofilms, where the bacterial cells are able to partially uptake the maltodextrin-based agents. In summary, the herein introduced concepts enable the development of specific biofilm reporters providing spatial resolution as well as lifetime- and spectrum-based readouts. Considering that most theragnostic agents reported so far mainly address metabolically active bacteria at the surface of biofilms but without reaching cells deeply immersed in the matrix, a new platform with a clear structure-property correlation is provided for the early detection of such bacterial arrays.

P∩N Bridged Cu(I) Dimers Featuring Both TADF and Phosphorescence. From Overview towards Detailed Case Study of the Excited Singlet and Triplet States

We present an overview over eight brightly luminescent Cu(I) dimers of the type Cu₂X₂(P∩N)₃ with X = Cl, Br, I and P∩N = 2-diphenylphosphino-pyridine (Ph₂Ppy), 2-diphenylphosphino-pyrimidine (Ph₂Ppym), 1-diphenylphosphino-isoquinoline (Ph₂Piqn) including three new crystal structures (Cu₂Br₂(Ph₂Ppy)₃ 1-Br, Cu₂I₂(Ph₂Ppym)₃ 2-I and Cu₂I₂(Ph₂Piqn)₃ 3-I). However, we mainly focus on their photo-luminescence properties. All compounds exhibit combined thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and phosphorescence at ambient temperature. Emission color, decay time and quantum yield vary over large ranges. For deeper characterization, we select Cu₂I₂(Ph₂Ppy)₃, 1-I, showing a quantum yield of 81%. DFT and SOC-TDDFT calculations provide insight into the electronic structures of the singlet S₁ and triplet T₁ states. Both stem from metal+iodide-to-ligand charge transfer transitions. Evaluation of the emission decay dynamics, measured from 1.2 ≤ T ≤ 300 K, gives ∆E(S₁-T₁) = 380 cm⁻¹ (47 meV), a transition rate of k(S₁→S₀) = 2.25 × 10⁶ s⁻¹ (445 ns), T₁ zero-field splittings, transition rates from the triplet substates and spin-lattice relaxation times. We also discuss the interplay of S₁-TADF and T₁-phosphorescence. The combined emission paths shorten the overall decay time. For OLED applications, utilization of both singlet and triplet harvesting can be highly favorable for improvement of the device performance.

Ligand-controlled and nanoconfinement-boosted luminescence employing Pt(ii) and Pd(ii) complexes: from color-tunable aggregation-enhanced dual emitters towards self-referenced oxygen reporters

In this work, we describe the synthesis, structural and photophysical characterization of four novel Pd(ii) and Pt(ii) complexes bearing tetradentate luminophoric ligands with high photoluminescence quantum yields (Φ L) and long excited state lifetimes (τ) at room temperature, where the results were interpreted by means of DFT calculations. Incorporation of fluorine atoms into the tetradentate ligand favors aggregation and thereby, a shortened average distance between the metal centers, which provides accessibility to metal-metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (3MMLCT) excimers acting as red-shifted energy traps if compared with the monomeric entities. This supramolecular approach provides an elegant way to enable room-temperature phosphorescence from Pd(ii) complexes, which are otherwise quenched by a thermal population of dissociative states due to a lower ligand field splitting. Encapsulation of these complexes in 100 nm-sized aminated polystyrene nanoparticles enables concentration-controlled aggregation-enhanced dual emission. This phenomenon facilitates the tunability of the absorption and emission colors while providing a rigidified environment supporting an enhanced Φ L up to about 80% and extended τ exceeding 100 μs. Additionally, these nanoarrays constitute rare examples for self-referenced oxygen reporters, since the phosphorescence of the aggregates is insensitive to external influences, whereas the monomeric species drop in luminescence lifetime and intensity with increasing triplet molecular dioxygen concentrations (diffusion-controlled quenching).

Recent Advances in Metal-TADF Emitters and Their Application in Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

In this contribution, recent advances in new classes of efficient metal-TADF complexes, especially those of Au(I), Au(III), and W(VI), and their application in OLEDs are reviewed. The high performance (EQE = 25%) and long device operational lifetime (LT₉₅ = 5,280 h) achieved in an OLED with tetradentate Au(III) TADF emitter reflect the competitiveness of this class of emitters for use in OLEDs with practical interest. The high EQE of 15.6% achieved in solution-processed OLED with W(VI) TADF emitter represents an alternative direction toward low-cost light-emitting materials. Finally, the design strategy of metal-TADF emitters and their next-stage development are discussed.

Highly Efficient Phosphorescent Tetradentate Platinum(II) Complexes Containing Fused 6/5/6 Metallocycles

A series of neutral tetradentate Pt(II) complexes with fused 6/5/6 metallocycles and biphenyl (bp)-containing ligands have been designed and synthesized. All bridging atoms adopt nitrogens designed as an acridinyl group (Ac), an aza acridinyl group (AAc), and an aza carbazolyl group (ACz), which can effectively tune their LUMO energy levels. Their HOMO energy levels can be well-controlled through molecular modifications on the bp moieties with electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups. These molecular modifications also have profound effects on the electrochemical and photophysical properties and photostabilities of the Pt(II) complexes. The ground-states and excited states are systematically studied by density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), and natural transition orbital (NTO) calculations. All the Pt(II) complexes exhibit admixed ³(LC/MLCT) characters in T₁ states with various proportions, which are strongly structure-dependent. These 6/5/6 Pt(II) complexes demonstrate high quantum efficiencies in dichloromethane solutions (Φ_PL = 27-51%) and in doped PMMA films (Φ_PL = 36-52%) at room temperature with short luminescence lifetimes of 1.6-9.5 μs and 7.6-9.0 μs, respectively. They emit green light with dominant peaks of 512-529 nm in solutions and 512-524 nm in doped PMMA films, respectively. Importantly, Pt(bp-2) exhibits highly stable emission colors with the same dominant peaks at 512 nm in various matrixes and also demonstrates a long photostability lifetime, LT₈₀, at 80% of initial luminance, of 190 min, which is doped in polystyrene films (5 wt %) excited by UV light of 375 nm at 500 W/m². These studies indicate that these 6/5/6 Pt(II) complexes can act as good phosphorescent emitters for OLED applications and should provide a viable route for the development of efficient and stable Pt(II)-based phosphorescent emitters.

Tetradentate Gold(III) Complexes as Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF) Emitters: Microwave-Assisted Synthesis and High-Performance OLEDs with Long Operational Lifetime

Structurally robust tetradentate gold(III)-emitters have potent material applications but are rare and unprecedented for those displaying thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Herein, a novel synthetic route leading to the preparation of highly emissive, charge-neutral tetradentate [C^C^N^C] gold(III) complexes with 5-5-6-membered chelate rings has been developed through microwave-assisted C-H bond activation. These complexes show high thermal stability and with emission origin (³ IL, ³ ILCT, and TADF) tuned by varying the substituents of the C^C^N^C ligand. With phenoxazine/diphenylamine substituent, we prepared the first tetradentate gold(III) complexes that are TADF emitters with emission quantum yields of up to 94 % and emission lifetimes of down to 0.62 μs in deoxygenated toluene. These tetradentate Au^III TADF emitters showed good performance in vacuum-deposited OLEDs with maximum EQEs of up to 25 % and LT₉₅ of up to 5280 h at 100 cd m^-2 .

2,2'-Dipyridylamines: more than just sister members of the bipyridine family. Applications and achievements in homogeneous catalysis and photoluminescent materials

2,2'-Dipyridylamines (dpa) and related compounds belong to the family of polydentate nitrogen ligands. More than a century has passed since their first report but new complexes and applications have been emerging in recent years owing to the versatility of dpa-based architectures. This review aims to present and highlight the main achievements attained with dpa-containing metal complexes in the domains of homogeneous catalysis and luminescent materials.
