Hydrothermal Synthesis of Two Cationic Bismuthate Clusters: An Alkylenedisulfonate Bridged Hexamer, [Bi6O4(OH)4(H2O)2][(CH2)2(SO3)2]3 and a Rare Nonamer Templated by Triflate, [Bi9O8(OH)6][CF3SO3]5

Structural Changes during the Growth of Atomically Precise Metal Oxido Nanoclusters from Combined Pair Distribution Function and Small-Angle X-ray Scattering Analysis

The combination of in situ pair distribution function (PDF) analysis and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) enables analysis of the formation mechanism of metal oxido nanoclusters and cluster-solvent interactions as they take place. Herein, we demonstrate the method for the formation of clusters with a [Bi38 O45 ] core. Upon dissolution of crystalline [Bi6 O5 (OH)3 (NO3 )5 ]⋅3 H2 O in DMSO, an intermediate rapidly forms, which slowly grows to stable [Bi38 O45 ] clusters. To identify the intermediate, we developed an automated modeling method, where smaller [Bix Oy ] structures based on the [Bi38 O45 ] framework are tested against the data. [Bi22 O26 ] was identified as the main intermediate species, illustrating how combined PDF and SAXS analysis is a powerful tool to gain insight into nucleation on an atomic scale. PDF also provides information on the interaction between nanoclusters and solvent, which is shown to depend on the nature of the ligands on the cluster surface.

Assembly of a Titanium-Oxo Cluster and a Bismuth Iodide Cluster, a Single-Source Precursor of a p-n-Type Photocatalyst

Titanium oxides and bismuth halides or oxyhalides have been known to be excellent semiconductors with both excellent photocatalytic and photoelectric properties. The design of supersalts assembled by titanium-oxo clusters (TOCs) and bismuth iodide clusters is a hopeful strategy for exploring the chemistry and application of new titanium-oxo clusters. We report herein a series of unusual ionic TOCs with Ti₁₂ oxo cluster cations and bismuth iodide anions, [Ti₁₂O₁₅(OⁱPr)₁₇]₃[Bi₃I₁₂] (Bi₃), [Ti₁₂O₁₄(OⁱPr)₁₈][Bi₄I₁₄(THF)₂] (Bi₄), and [Ti₁₂O₁₄(OⁱPr)₁₈][Ti₁₁BiO₁₄(OⁱPr)₁₇][Bi₆I₂₂] (Bi₆). Single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed that the type and charge of the Ti₁₂ clusters varied with the charges of different bismuth iodide clusters. Taking advantage of the easy hydrolysis of the TOCs and BiI clusters in water, we used these supersalt crystals as single-source precursors to prepare a p-n-type BiOI-TiO photocatalyst. The heterojunction materials were carefully characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, etc. The synergistic effect of the two components of BiOI and TiO on the photocatalytic degradation of RhB in water is demonstrated. This is a very convenient method for obtaining a p-n-type BiOI-TiO heterojuction photocatalyst by just placing the ground TOC crystals into water.

Tweaking the Charge Transfer: Bonding Analysis of Bismuth(III) Complexes with a Flexidentate Phosphane Ligand

To account for the charge transfer and covalent character in bonding between P and Bi centers, the electronic structures of [P(C6H4-o-CH2SCH3)3BiCln](3-n)+ (n = 0-3) model species have been investigated computationally. On the basis of this survey a synthetic target compound with a dative P→Bi bond has been selected. Consecutively, the highly reactive bismuth cage [P(C6H4-o-CH2SCH3)3Bi]3+ has been accessed experimentally and characterized. Importantly, our experiments (single-crystal X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR spectroscopy) and computations (NBO and AIM analysis) reveal that the P···Bi bonding in this trication can be described as a dative bond. Here we have shown that our accordion-like molecular framework allows for tuning of the interaction between P and Bi centers.

Hybrid Rare-Earth(III)/Bismuth(III) Clusters Assembled with Phosphonates

tert-Butylphosphonic acid and rare-earth precursors are employed to construct four trinuclear rare-earth phosphonate clusters, RE₃( ^tBuPO₃)₂(hfac)₅(CH₃OH)₈]·2CH₃OH (RE = Eu, Y, Pr, and Sm; hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate), which are composed of three RE³⁺ ions alternately bridged by two phosphonates. With the introduction of bismuth oxido diketonate, [Bi₉O₇(hfac)₁₃], three different types of rare-earth/bismuth phosphonate clusters, Bi₁₂RE₂ (RE = Pr and Sm), Bi₆Eu₇, and Bi₆Y₉, are successfully obtained via variation of the reaction conditions, and they are the first reported examples of bismuth-oxo clusters encapsulated by cyclic rare-earth-oxo or rare-earth/bismuth-oxo phosphonate clusters, respectively. These clusters show obvious absorption in the UV region, and the Eu-containing clusters exhibit bright-red fluorescence.

Multiparameter High-Throughput and in Situ X-ray Diffraction Study of Six New Bismuth Sulfonatocarboxylates: Discovery, Phase Transformation, and Reaction Trends

With the employment of high-throughput methods, the system Bi³⁺/4,8-disulfonyl-2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (H₄DSNDC)/H₂O/additive (HNO₃ or NaOH) was systematically investigated under hydrothermal reaction conditions. The influence of the molar ratio of the starting materials, pH, and reaction temperature and time was investigated in more than 500 reactions. The product formation is highly sensitive toward small changes of the synthesis parameters, but six new bismuth sulfonatocarboxylates were reproducibly obtained starting from clear solutions of the reactants. All compounds were structurally characterized from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. Fully deprotonated linker ions are found in [Bi₆O₆(OH)₂(H₂O)₄(DSNDC)] (1), [Bi₂(OH)₂(DSNDC)] (2), [Bi₈O₇(OH)₂(H₂O)₂(DSNDC)₂] (3), and [Bi₇O₅(OH)₃(H₂O)₄(DSNDC)₂]·4H₂O (4), while the presence of larger amounts of acid or short reaction times leads to compounds with noncoordinating -COOH groups, [Bi₂(OH)₂(H₂O)₂(DSNDC)(H₂DSNDC)] (5) and [Bi₆O₄(OH)₄(H₂O)₁₂(H₂DSNDC)₃]· xH₂O (6), respectively. The inorganic building units (IBUs) in all six structures differ substantially from each other; the IBUs found in 2 ({Bi₂(OH)₂}), 5 (BiO₈ polyhedron), and 6 ({Bi₆O₄(OH)₄} cluster) have been reported in the literature, while new IBUs are observed for 1 (chains of composition {Bi₃O₃(OH)}_∞), 3 ({Bi₁₆O₁₄(OH)₄} cluster), and 4 ({Bi₇O₅(OH)₃} cluster). Systematic variation of the reaction temperature and time indicated their distinct influence on product formation. Hence, in situ powder X-ray diffraction measurements at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron, Hamburg, Germany, employing synchrotron radiation were carried out. In all studied in situ reactions, compound 6 is first observed and subsequently transformed to 1, 2, 4, and 5, depending on the reaction time and temperature as well as concentration of the starting materials.

High-nuclearity silver ethynide clusters containing polynucleating oxygen donor ligands

Synthesis and crystal structure of three new bismuth(III) arylsulfonatocarboxylates

Three new bismuth arylsulfonatocarboxylates [Bi(OH)(SB)] (1), [Bi4(ST)2(HST)O2(H2O)2]·H2O (2) and [Bi4(ST)2O3(H2O)2] (3) were synthesized under solvothermal reaction conditions at 180°C using the potassium or sodium salt of 4-sulfobenzoic acid (H2SB) and 2-sulfoterephthalic acid (H3ST), respectively. The compounds were characterized in detail and the crystal structures were determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. Phase purity was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction and elemental analysis. Structural comparisons to the only three other known bismuth sulfonatocarboxylates are presented. Due to the higher reaction temperatures employed for the synthesis of the title compounds a higher degree of condensation of the BiOx polyhedra (X=7 or 8) to tetrameric units, 1D chains or a 2D layer is observed. Connection through the organic linker molecules leads to the formation of 3D coordination polymers in all three title compounds.

Bi(iii) immobilization inside MIL-101: enhanced photocatalytic performance

Bi(iii) particles were immobilized into the cages of mesoporous chromium oxoterephthalate MIL-101. The material obtained possesses enhanced photocatalytic activity in comparison with bulk BiOCl synthesized under the same conditions.

Anionic Bismuth-Oxido Carboxylate Clusters with Transition Metal Countercations

Six new anionic bismuth-oxido clusters containing trifluoroacetate ligands were prepared. These include two new Bi₆O₈ clusters: [M(NCMe)₂(H₂O)₄]₃[Bi₆(μ₃-O)₄(μ₃-OH)₄(CF₃CO₂)₁₂] with an octahedral Bi₆O₄(OH)₄ core (M = Ni, 1a; Co, 1b) and four Bi₄O₂ clusters, {[Co(NCMe)₆][Bi₄(μ₃-O)₂(CF₃CO₂)₁₀]}_n (2a), {[Co{HC(MeCO)₂(MeCNH)}₂][Bi₄(μ₃-O)₂(CF₃CO₂)₁₀]·2[CF₃CO₂]·2[CF₃CO₂H]·2[H₂O]}_n (2b), {[Cu(NCMe)₄]₂[Bi₄(μ₃-O)₂(CF₃CO₂)₁₀]·2[CF₃CO₂H]}_n (2c), and {[Me₄N]₂[Bi₄(μ₃-O)₂(CF₃CO₂)₁₀]·2[CF₃CO₂H]}_n (2d). These are among the first bismuth-oxido anionic clusters synthesized, and the first to have transition metal countercations. The Bi₆O₈ anion in 1a and 1b is a high-symmetry octahedron. Additionally, two of the new Bi₄O₂ clusters are arranged in 1D polymeric structures via bridging carboxylate ligands. The cation in compound 2c had not been previously characterized and was also observed in the synthesis of [Co{HC(MeCO)₂(MeCNH)}₂][Bi(NO₃)₆] (3). The new compounds were characterized using single crystal X-ray crystallography and elemental analysis.
