Tunable Fluorescent/Phosphorescent Platinum(II) Porphyrin–Fluorene Copolymers for Ratiometric Dual Emissive Oxygen Sensing

Luminescent iridium(III) porphyrin complexes as near-infrared-emissive biological probes

We report herein the design, synthesis and characterisation of a series of luminescent iridium(III) porphyrin complexes [Ir(ttp)(CH2CH2OH)] (H2ttp = 5,10,15,20-tetra-4-tolylporphyrin) (1), [Ir(tpp-Ph-NO2)(CO)Cl] (H2tpp-Ph-NO2 = 5-(4-((4-nitrophenoxy)carbonyloxymethyl)phenyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin) (2), [Ir(tpp-COOMe)(Py)2](Cl) (H2tpp-COOMe = 5-(4-methoxycarbonylphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin; Py = pyridine) (3) and [Ir(tpp-COOH)(Py)2](Cl) (H2tpp-COOH = 5-(4-carboxylphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin) (4). All the complexes displayed long-lived near-infrared (NIR) emission attributed to an excited state of mixed triplet intraligand (3IL) (π → π*) (porphyrin) and triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3MLCT) (dπ(Ir) → π*(porphyrin)) character. The cytotoxicity of the complexes toward HeLa cells was examined by the 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The cationic complexes 3 and 4 exhibited higher cytotoxic activity toward HeLa cells than their neutral counterparts 1 and 2. Cellular uptake studies by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and laser-scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) indicated that complexes 3 and 4 showed higher cellular uptake efficiencies than complexes 1 and 2 due to their cationic charge, and they were enriched in the perinuclear region of the cells with negligible nuclear uptake. Additionally, the carboxyl complex 4 was used to label a model protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) via an amidation reaction. The resultant luminescent protein conjugate 4-BSA displayed similar photophysical properties and intracellular localisation behaviour to its parent complex. The results of this work will contribute to the development of luminescent iridium(III) porphyrin complexes and related bioconjugates as NIR-emissive probes for bioimaging applications.

Naphthalimide-Carbazole Compact Electron Donor-Acceptor Dyads: Effect of Molecular Geometry and Electron-Donating Capacity on the Spin-Orbit Charge Transfer Intersystem Crossing

We prepared a series of naphthalimide (NI)-carbazole (Cz) compact electron donor-acceptor dyads showing different substitution positions, C-N/C-C linkers, and conformation restriction magnitudes to study the spin-orbit charge transfer intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC). The varied conformation restrictions lead to different dihedral angles between the donor and acceptor (37°-81°) and electronic coupling magnitude (matrix elements V: 1290-3070 cm^-1). Based on the comparison between the dyads containing C-N and C-C linkers, we found that a large dihedral angle between the donor and acceptor is favorable to efficient SOCT-ISC. For one dyad, the singlet oxygen quantum yield (Φ_Δ) is up to 84.4% (in dichloromethane), which is much higher than that of the previously reported NI-phenothiazine (PTZ) analogue dyad (Φ_Δ = 16.0% in n-hexane). The intrinsic triplet state lifetime (τ_T) is 270 μs, longer than that accessed by the heavy atom effect (75.2 μs). As compared with the NI-PTZ analogue dyad, the Cz unit in the current dyads is a weaker electron donor than PTZ. Thus, a higher CT state energy in NI-Cz dyads was observed, which makes the SOCT-ISC efficient in solvents with a wide range of polarities. Meanwhile, the localized triplet state (³LE) becomes the lowest-lying state in the NI-Cz dyads, which is different from the triplet charge transfer (³CT) state observed in the analogue NI-PTZ dyad. Moreover, the large energy gap between the CT and ³LE states inhibits the reverse ISC; as a result, no thermally activated delayed fluorescence was observed for the current NI-Cz dyads.

Quantitative Luminescence Photography of a Swellable Hydrogel Dressing with a Traffic-Light Response to Oxygen

Sensor-integrated wound dressings are emerging tools applicable to a wide variety of medical applications from emergency triage to at-home monitoring. Uncomfortable, unnecessary wound dressing changes may be avoided by providing quantitative insight into tissue characteristics related to wound healing such as tissue oxygenation, pH, and exudate/transudate volume. Here, a simple cost-effective methodology for quantifying oxygen and pH in a swellable hydrogel dressing using a single photograph is presented. The red and green luminescence of a novel dendritic polyamine Pt-porphyrin and fluorescein conjugate quantitatively responds to oxygen and pH, respectively, and enables robust sensing. The porphyrin conjugate, when combined with a four-arm star polyethylene glycol (PEG) amine polymer, rapidly crosslinks at room temperature with an N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS)-PEG crosslinker to form a color-changing hydrogel dressing with tunable swelling capabilities applicable to a variety of wound environments. An inexpensive digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera modified with bandpass filters captures the hydrogel luminescence using simple macroscopic photography, and conversion to HSB colorspace allows for intensity-independent image analysis of the hydrogels' dual modality response. The hydrogel formulation exhibits a robust and validated visible red-orange-green "traffic light" spectrum in response to oxygen changes, regardless of swelling state, pH, or autofluorescence from skin, thereby enabling the clinician friendly naked-eye feedback.

Ultrasmall Luminescent Metal Nanoparticles: Surface Engineering Strategies for Biological Targeting and Imaging

In the past decade, ultrasmall luminescent metal nanoparticles (ULMNPs, d < 3 nm) have achieved rapid progress in addressing many challenges in the healthcare field because of their excellent physicochemical properties and biological behaviors. With the sharp shrinking size of large plasmonic metal nanoparticles (PMNPs), the contributions from the surface characteristics increase significantly, which brings both opportunities and challenges in the application-driven surface engineering of ULMNPs toward advanced biological applications. Here, the systematic advancements in the biological applications of ULMNPs from bioimaging to theranostics are summarized with emphasis on the versatile surface engineering strategies in the regulation of biological targeting and imaging performance. The efforts in the surface functionalization strategies of ULMNPs for enhanced disease targeting abilities are first discussed. Thereafter, self-assembly strategies of ULMNPs for fabricating multifunctional nanostructures for multimodal imaging and nanomedicine are discussed. Further, surface engineering strategies of ratiometric ULMNPs to enhance the imaging stability to address the imaging challenges in complicated bioenvironments are summarized. Finally, the phototoxicity of ULMNPs and future perspectives are also reviewed, which are expected to provide a fundamental understanding of the physicochemical properties and biological behaviors of ULMNPs to accelerate their future clinical applications in healthcare.

Charge separation, charge recombination and intersystem crossing in orthogonal naphthalimide-perylene electron donor/acceptor dyad

We prepared an orthogonal electron donor/acceptor dyad (NI-Py) with perylene (Py) as electron donor and 4-aminonaphthalimide (NI) as an electron acceptor. The molecule adopts orthogonal geometry due to the steric hindrance exerted by the 4-amino substituents on the NI moiety. The photophysical properties of dyad were studied by steady-state UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies, femtosecond/nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopies and DFT computations. Ground state interaction between the NI and Py units is negligible; however, charge separation occurs upon photoexcitation, indicated by the quenching of the fluorescence of the dyad in polar solvents, i.e. fluorescence quantum yield (Φ_F) is 61.9% in toluene and Φ_F = 0.2% in methanol. Spin-orbit-coupled charge transfer-induced intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC) was confirmed by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (charge separation takes 1.7 ps and charge recombination takes 6.9 ns, in CH₂Cl₂). Nanosecond transient absorption spectra indicated the formation of perylene-localized triplet state, and the triplet state lifetime (175 μs) is much longer than that accessed with the heavy atom effect (3-bromoperylene; 16 μs). The singlet oxygen quantum (Φ_Δ) yield of the dyad is 2.2% in hexane and 9.5% in dichloromethane. The low SOCT-ISC efficiency as compared to the previously reported analogue (Φ_Δ = 80%) is attributed to the mismatch of the ¹CT/T_n state energies, and/or the orientation of the NI and Py units, i.e. orthogonal geometry is not sufficient for achieving efficient SOCT-ISC in compact electron donor/acceptor dyads.

Long-Lived Local Triplet Excited State and Charge Transfer State of 4,4'-Dimethoxy Triphenylamine-BODIPY Compact Electron Donor/Acceptor Dyads

The spin-orbit charge transfer intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC) and the formation of a long-lived charge transfer (CT) state were studied with a series of 4,4'-dimethoxy triphenylamine-BODIPY compact electron donor/acceptor dyads. Different torsion freedoms were applied in the dyads to tune the electronic coupling between the donor and acceptor, and a red-shifted CT absorption band was observed for one dyad. The dyads show solvent polarity-dependent singlet oxygen photosensitizing ability (quantum yields 3%-79%). Nanosecond transient absorption spectra of the dyad in nonpolar solvent confirm the formation of triplet states. The intrinsic triplet state lifetime is up to 383 μs (in fluid solution), which is much longer than that accessed with the heavy atom effect (276 μs). Intermolecular triplet photosensitizing of the dyads in a polar solvent produces a long-lived ³CT state (lifetime, τ_CT = 8.0 μs supported by the electron spin density surface analysis). The triplet state lifetime of the dyads doped in a Clear Flex 50 polymer film is exceptionally long (7.6-11.4 ms), and formation of a long-lived CT state (37 μs) was observed. Triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion was performed with the electron donor/acceptor dyads used as the triplet photosensitizer and perylene used as the triplet acceptor; the upconversion quantum yield is up to 15.8%.

Anthryl-Appended Platinum(II) Schiff Base Complexes: Exceptionally Small Stokes Shift, Triplet Excited States Equilibrium, and Application in Triplet-Triplet-Annihilation Upconversion

Two anthryl platinum(II) N,N'-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)-1,2-benzenediamine Schiff base complexes were synthesized, with the anthryl attached via its 9 position (Pt-9An) or 2 position (Pt-2An) to the platinum (Pt) Schiff base backbone. The complexes show unusually small Stokes shifts (0.23 eV), representing a very small energy loss for the photoexcitation/intersystem crossing process, which is beneficial for applications as triplet photosensitizers. Phosphorescence of the Pt(II) coordination framework (Φ_P = 11.0%) is quenched in the anthryl-containing complexes (Φ_P = 4.0%) and shows a biexponential decay (τ_P = 3.4 μs/87% and 18.2 μs/13%) compared to the single-exponential decay of the native Pt(II) Schiff base complex (τ_P = 3.7 μs). Femtosecond/nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy suggests an equilibrium between triplet anthracene (³An) and triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (³MLCT) states, with the dark ³An state slightly lower in energy (1.96 eV for Pt-9An and 1.90 eV for Pt-2An) than the emissive ³MLCT state (1.97 eV for Pt-9An and 1.91 eV for Pt-2An). Intramolecular triplet-triplet energy transfer (TTET) and reverse TTET take 4.8 ps/444 ps for Pt-9An and 55 ps/1.7 ns for Pt-2An, respectively. The triplet-state equilibrium extends the triplet-state lifetime of the complexes to 103 μs (Pt-2An) or 163 μs (Pt-9An), in comparison to the native Pt(II) complex, which shows a lifetime of 4.0 μs. The complexes were used for triplet-triplet-annihilation upconversion with perylene as the triplet acceptor. The upconversion quantum yield is up to 15%, and a large anti-Stokes shift (0.75 eV) is achieved by excitation into the singlet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer absorption band (589 nm) of the complexes (anti-Stokes shift is 0.92 eV with 9,10-diphenylanthracene as the acceptor).

Quinoline-annulated porphyrin platinum complexes as NIR emitters

The platinum(II) complexes of known quinoline-annulated porphyrins were prepared and spectroscopically characterized. Their optical properties (UV-vis absorption and phosphorescence spectra and phosphorescence lifetimes) were recorded and contrasted against their 2,3-dioxoporphyrin precursor platinum(II) complex. The absorbance and emission spectra (in EtOH glass at 77 K) of the quinoline-annulated porphyrins fall within the NIR optical window of tissue, ranging, depending on the derivative, between [Formula: see text]950 and 1200 nm. The much red-shifted optical spectra, when compared to their non-quinoline-annulated precursors, are attributed to the [Formula: see text]-extension and conformational non-planarity that the annulation causes. The emission yields of the mono-quinoline-annulated derivatives are too low and their lifetimes too short to be practical emitters, but the bis-annulated derivative possesses a practical lifetime and emission yield, suggesting its further exploration, particularly since the methodology toward the solubilization of the quinoline-annulated porphyrins in biological media through derivatization is known.

Directing energy transfer in Pt(bodipy)(mercaptopyrene) dyads

We report on the photophysical properties of three dyads that combine a 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (bodipy, BDP) and a mercaptopyrene (SPyr) dye ligand at a Pt(PEt3)2 fragment. σ-Bonding of the dyes to the Pt ion promotes intersystem crossing (ISC) via the external heavy atom effect. The coupling of efficient ISC with charge-transfer from the electron-rich mercaptopyrene to the electron-accepting BDP ligand (PB-CT) gives rise to a multitude of (potentially) emissive states. This culminates in the presence of four different emissions for the mono- and dinuclear complexes BPtSPyr and BPtSPyrSPtB with an unsubstituted BDP ligand and either a terminal 1-mercaptopyrene or a bridging pyrene-1,6-dithiolate ligand. Thus, in fluid solution, near IR emission at 724 nm from the 3PB-CT state is observed with a quantum yield of up to 15%. Excitation into the BDP-based 1ππ* or the pyrene-based 1ππ* band additionally trigger fluorescence and phosphorescence emissions from the BDP-centred 1ππ* and 3ππ* states. In frozen solution, at 77 K, phosphorescence from the pyrene ligand becomes the prominent emission channel, while PB-CT emission is absent. Alkylation of the BDP ligand in KBPtSPyr funnels all excitation energy into fluorescence and phosphorescence emissions from the KBDP ligand. The assignments of the various excited states and the deactivation cascades were probed by absorption and emission spectroscopy, transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical and UV/Vis/NIR spectroelectrochemical measurements, and by quantum chemical calculations. Our conclusions are further corroborated with the aid of suitable reference compounds comprising of just one chromophore. All dyads are triplet sensitizers and are able to generate singlet oxygen.

Red Room-Temperature Phosphorescence of CDs@Zeolite Composites Triggered by Heteroatoms in Zeolite Frameworks

Carbon dots (CDs) with red-emitting room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are rarely reported because of the increasing nonradiative decay of the excited states and the decreasing energy gap between the excited states and ground states. Herein, we demonstrate a facile strategy for modulating the RTP properties of CDs in terms of donor-acceptor energy transfer (EnT) in the CDs-in-zeolite system. Upon tuning of the heteroatoms (Zn²⁺, Mn²⁺) doped in the aluminophosphate zeolite frameworks, CDs@zeolite composites with green and red phosphorescence have been prepared via in situ hydrothermal synthesis. In such composites, the zeolite matrix provides an efficient confinement role in stabilizing the triplet states of CDs. Significantly, the Mn-doped zeolite could act as an energy acceptor allowing EnT from excitons of CDs to the dopant in the host matrix, generating the intriguing red RTP behavior. This work provides an effective strategy for developing CD-based composite materials with special RTP emissions as well as new fields for applications.

Quadruply N-methylated octaphyrin: a helical macrocycle exhibiting chiroptical properties and dynamic conformation changes correlated with helical and inner N-methyl orientations

[38]Octaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1) bearing four methyl moieties at the inner nitrogen sites has been synthesized. This expanded porphyrin has helical chirality as correlated with the orientations of the inner N-methyl groups, exhibiting chiroptical properties as observed in CD Cotton effects from the enantiomers through optical resolution. The chirality of the octaphyrin was retained at r.t. but the racemization occurred at higher temperature as examined by CD spectral changes. The dynamic conversion processes between the enantiomers were investigated by theoretical studies, suggesting the plausible pathways via the intermediates with appropriate conformations.

Nanoparticle- and microparticle-based luminescence imaging of chemical species and temperature in aquatic systems: a review

Most aquatic systems rely on a multitude of biogeochemical processes that are coupled with each other in a complex and dynamic manner. To understand such processes, minimally invasive analytical tools are required that allow continuous, real-time measurements of individual reactions in these complex systems. Optical chemical sensors can be used in the form of fiber-optic sensors, planar sensors, or as micro- and nanoparticles (MPs and NPs). All have their specific merits, but only the latter allow for visualization and quantification of chemical gradients over 3D structures. This review (with 147 references) summarizes recent developments mainly in the field of optical NP sensors relevant for chemical imaging in aquatic science. The review encompasses methods for signal read-out and imaging, preparation of NPs and MPs, and an overview of relevant MP/NP-based sensors. Additionally, examples of MP/NP-based sensors in aquatic systems such as corals, plant tissue, biofilms, sediments and water-sediment interfaces, marine snow and in 3D bioprinting are given. We also address current challenges and future perspectives of NP-based sensing in aquatic systems in a concluding section. Graphical abstract ᅟ.

Effect of Molecular Conformation Restriction on the Photophysical Properties of N^N Platinum(II) Bis(ethynylnaphthalimide) Complexes Showing Close-Lying 3MLCT and 3LE Excited States

Using naphthalimide (NI), complexes (Pt-PhNI and Pt-PhMeNI) based on the N^N platinum(II) bis(phenylacetylide) coordination framework were prepared, in which there are two close-lying triplet states, i.e., the metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer (³MLCT) and the NI localized emissive state (³LE). Pt-PhNI has better electronic communication between the Pt coordination center and the NI moiety, whereas in Pt-PhMeNI, they are more isolated by orthogonal geometry. For Pt-PhMeNI, the S₀ → ¹MLCT and S₀ → ¹LE absorption bands are separated by 5655 cm^-1, while they are more overlapped in Pt-PhNI. The ³MLCT → S₀ and ³LE → S₀ dual phosphorescence emissions were observed for both Pt-PhNI (in toluene) and Pt-PhMeNI (in benzonitrile). The molecular conformation tunes the ³MLCT/³LE state population ratio, and the orthogonal geometry makes the ³LE state in Pt-PhMeNI basically a dark state (in toluene). Switching of the relative energy levels of the ³MLCT/³LE states by variation of the solvent polarity and temperature was achieved. For Pt-PhMeNI, the energy level of ³MLCT state is higher in a polar solvent; thus, the ³MLCT emission decreases, while the phosphorescence lifetime is prolonged from 9.5 μs (in toluene) to 58 μs (in benzonitrile) because of the different equilibria with the nonemissive ³LE state. Conversely, increasing the temperature enhances the upward transition from the nonemissive ³LE state to the emissive ³MLCT state; as such, the phosphorescence of Pt-PhMeNI was intensified at higher temperature (which is unusual), and the phosphorescence lifetime decreased from 58 μs (298 K) to ca. 5 μs (348 K). The ultrafast intersystem crossing (ca. 0.5 ps) and intramolecular triplet-triplet energy transfer (3-11 ps) were studied by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. These results are useful for an in-depth understanding of the photophysics of multichromophore transition-metal complexes and for the design of external stimuli-responsive sensing materials, for instance, temperature or microenvironment sensing materials.

Phosphorescent Starburst Pt(II) Porphyrins as Bifunctional Therapeutic Agents for Tumor Hypoxia Imaging and Photodynamic Therapy

It is very meaningful to develop bifunctional therapeutic agents which can monitor the tumor hypoxia in real time as well as maintain good photodynamic therapy (PDT) effect under hypoxia. To achieve it, herein, a series of hydrophilic phosphorescent starburst Pt(II) porphyrins as bifunctional therapeutic agents for simultaneous tumor hypoxia imaging and highly efficient PDT have been rationally designed and synthesized. They have been obtained by using Pt(II) porphyrins as the functional core and cationic oligofluorenes as the arms. Such a three-dimensional structural feature ensures their hydrophilicity, ultrasensitive oxygen-sensing performance, and high ¹O₂ quantum yields. Furthermore, the O₂-sensitive phosphorescence lifetimes of starburst Pt(II) porphyrins are beneficial to eliminate the interference from background fluorescence remarkably and enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of hypoxia imaging by using phosphorescence lifetime imaging microscopy. Their PDT effects were also evaluated both in vitro (under both hypoxia and normoxia) and in vivo. As a result, tumor hypoxia can be significantly differentiated and tumor growth can be inhibited effectively, while the systemic toxicity is not observed. All of these results demonstrate that starburst Pt(II) porphyrins could be used as the promising bifunctional therapeutic agents for early diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Chromophore-Functionalized Phenanthro-diimine Ligands and Their Re(I) Complexes

A series of diimine ligands has been designed on the basis of 2-pyridyl-1 H-phenanthro[9,10- d]imidazole (L1, L2). Coupling the basic motif of L1 with anthracene-containing fragments affords the bichromophore compounds L3-L5, of which L4 and L5 adopt a donor-acceptor architecture. The latter allows intramolecular charge transfer with intense absorption bands in the visible spectrum (lowest λabs 464 nm (ε = 1.2 × 104 M-1 cm-1) and 490 nm (ε = 5.2 × 104 M-1 cm-1) in CH2Cl2 for L4 and L5, respectively). L1-L5 show strong fluorescence in a fluid medium (Φem = 22-92%, λem 370-602 nm in CH2Cl2); discernible emission solvatochromism is observed for L4 and L5. In addition, the presence of pyridyl (L1-L5) and dimethylaminophenyl (L5) groups enables reversible alteration of their optical properties by means of protonation. Ligands L1-L5 were used to synthesize the corresponding [Re(CO)3X(diimine)] (X = Cl, 1-5; X = CN, 1-CN) complexes. 1 and 2 exhibit unusual dual emission of singlet and triplet parentage, which originate from independently populated 1ππ* and 3MLCT excited states. In contrast to the majority of the reported Re(I) carbonyl luminophores, complexes 3-5 display moderately intense ligand-based fluorescence from an anthracene-containing secondary chromophore and complete quenching of emission from the 3MLCT state presumably due to the triplet-triplet energy transfer (3MLCT → 3ILCT).

Reactivity Toward Ag+: A General Strategy to Generate a New Emissive Center from NIR-Emitting Gold Nanoparticles

We report a facile strategy for the transformation of single NIR-emitting AuNPs to dual-NIR-emitting bimetallic Ag@AuNPs based on the robust reactivity toward Ag(I) ions under mild conditions. The reactivities toward Ag(I) ions were found to be significantly different between visible- and NIR-emitting glutathione (GSH)-coated AuNPs: the high GSH surface coverage on the 610 nm-emitting AuNPs resulted in a reversible interaction due to enough surface steric hindrance to resist Ag(I) ions from interaction with the Au(0) core, whereas the low GSH surface coverage on the 810 nm-emitting AuNPs led to both antigalvanic reaction and Ag(I)-carboxylate shell formation on the surface of the AuNPs, which were responsible for the formation of a new emissive center at 705 nm. This strategy was also demonstrated to exhibit excellent generalization toward various NIR-emitting AuNPs with surface chemistries containing carboxyl groups, opening a new pathway of tailoring the optical properties of metallic NPs through surface reactivity.

Quantitatively monitoring oxygen variation in endoplasmic reticulum with a fluorophore–phosphor energy transfer cassette

Remote Terpyridine Integrated NHC-IrIII Luminophores as Potential Dual-Emissive Ratiometric O2 Probes

A new class of bi-luminophoric dyad has been designed, consisting of an oxygen-sensitive phosphorescent NHC-Ir^III center with a remotely integrated oxygen-insensitive fluorescent terpyridine unit. The new terpyridine flurophore-integrated NHC-Ir^III molecule was demonstrated as a potential ratiometric O₂ probe with built-in internal reference, exhibiting tunable dual-emissive features, as well as highly linear and reversible O₂ -response behavior.

Single-Particle Ratiometric Pressure Sensing Based on "Double-Sensor" Colloidal Nanocrystals

Ratiometric pressure sensitive paints (r-PSPs) are all-optical probes for monitoring oxygen flows in the vicinity of complex or miniaturized surfaces. They typically consist of a porous binder embedding mixtures of a reference and a sensor chromophore exhibiting oxygen-insensitive and oxygen-responsive luminescence, respectively. Here, we demonstrate the first example of an r-PSP based on a single two-color emitter that removes limitations of r-PSPs based on chromophore mixtures such as different temperature dependencies of the two chromophores, cross-readout between the reference and sensor signals and phase segregation. In our approach, we utilize a novel "double-sensor" r-PSP that features two spectrally separated emission bands with opposite responses to the O₂ pressure, which boosts the sensitivity with respect to traditional reference-sensor pairs. Specifically, we use two-color-emitting dot-in-bulk CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals, exhibiting red and green emission bands from their core and shell states, whose intensities are respectively enhanced and quenched in response to the increased oxygen partial pressure that effectively tunes the position of the nanocrystal's Fermi energy. This leads to a strong and reversible ratiometric response at the single particle level and an over 100% enhancement in the pressure sensitivity. Our proof-of-concept r-PSPs further exhibit suppressed cross-readout thanks to zero spectral overlap between the core and shell luminescence bands and a temperature-independent ratiometric response between 0 and 70 °C.

Fluorinated meso-tetraaryl Pt(ii)-porphyrins: structure, photophysical, electrochemical, and phosphorescent oxygen sensing studies

Fluorinated Pt(ii)-porphyrins are examined for their oxygen sensing studies and it is revealed that PtT(3,5-DTFMP)P (F8) shows better sensitivity, which is further supported by emission studies with significant quenching (K_SV = 0.068 Torr⁻¹).

Porphyrinoids for Chemical Sensor Applications

Porphyrins and related macrocycles have been intensively exploited as sensing materials in chemical sensors, since in these devices they mimic most of their biological functions, such as reversible binding, catalytic activation, and optical changes. Such a magnificent bouquet of properties allows applying porphyrin derivatives to different transducers, ranging from nanogravimetric to optical devices, also enabling the realization of multifunctional chemical sensors, in which multiple transduction mechanisms are applied to the same sensing layer. Potential applications are further expanded through sensor arrays, where cross-selective sensing layers can be applied for the analysis of complex chemical matrices. The possibility of finely tuning the macrocycle properties by synthetic modification of the different components of the porphyrin ring, such as peripheral substituents, molecular skeleton, coordinated metal, allows creating a vast library of porphyrinoid-based sensing layers. From among these, one can select optimal arrays for a particular application. This feature is particularly suitable for sensor array applications, where cross-selective receptors are required. This Review briefly describes chemical sensor principles. The main part of the Review is divided into two sections, describing the porphyrin-based devices devoted to the detection of gaseous or liquid samples, according to the corresponding transduction mechanism. Although most devices are based on porphyrin derivatives, seminal examples of the application of corroles or other porphyrin analogues are evidenced in dedicated sections.

Multifunctional Phosphorescent Conjugated Polymer Dots for Hypoxia Imaging and Photodynamic Therapy of Cancer Cells

Molecular oxygen (O2) plays a key role in many physiological processes, and becomes a toxicant to kill cells when excited to 1O2. Intracellular O2 levels, or the degree of hypoxia, are always viewed as an indicator of cancers. Due to the highly efficient cancer therapy ability and low side effect, photodynamic therapy (PDT) becomes one of the most promising treatments for cancers. Herein, an early-stage diagnosis and therapy system is reported based on the phosphorescent conjugated polymer dots (Pdots) containing Pt(II) porphyrin as an oxygen-responsive phosphorescent group and 1O2 photosensitizer. Intracellular hypoxia detection has been investigated. Results show that cells treated with Pdots display longer lifetimes under hypoxic conditions, and time-resolved luminescence images exhibit a higher signal-to-noise ratio after gating off the short-lived background fluorescence. Quantification of O2 is realized by the ratiometric emission intensity of phosphorescence/fluorescence and the lifetime of phosphorescence. Additionally, the PDT efficiency of Pdots is estimated by flow cytometry, MTT cell viability assay, and in situ imaging of PDT induced cell death. Interestingly, Pdots exhibit a high PDT efficiency and would be promising in clinical applications.

Broadband spectra with fluorescence and phosphorescence dual emission from bichromophoric platinum metallomesogens containing a 6,12-dihydro-indeno[1,2-b]fluorene linkage

Two bichromophoric platinum metallomesogens, FJ-1 and FJ-2, exhibited fluorescence (¹π,π*) and phosphorescence (³π,π*) dual emissions in solution. Their photophysical properties were detailedly investigated by experiment and theory calculation.

Complexes trans-Pt(BODIPY)X(PEt3)2: excitation energy-dependent fluorescence and phosphorescence emissions, oxygen sensing and photocatalysis

Complexes trans-Pt(BODIPY)X(PEt₃)₂ exhibit dual fluorescence and phosphorescence emissions, whose intensities are modulated by the anionic ligand X⁻ and the excitation wavelengths. They constitute efficient single-component ³O₂ sensors and photocatalysts for aereal photooxidations with quantum yields near unity.

Photostable Fluorophenyl-Substituted Cyclometalated Platinum(II) Emitters for Monitoring of Molecular Oxygen in Real Time

The effects of fluorophenyl substituents on the photoluminescence, redox properties, and oxygen sensing behaviors of the cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes are reported. The Pt(II) complexes with fluorophenyl substituents at the para position on the phenyl ring of 2-phenylpyridine (ppy) exhibit higher oxygen sensitivities than those at the meta position. Photodegradation tests demonstrate that the introduction of fluorophenyl substituents can strongly improve the photostability of cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes. Fast response and recovery times of oxygen sensing films are obtained in 3.0 s on going from 0% O2 to 100% O2 and in 4.0 s on going from 100% O2 to 0% O2 (95% recovery of the luminescence), respectively. The oxygen sensing films show excellent operational stability in 4000 s saturation O2/N2 cycles, which meets the requirement of monitoring molecular oxygen in real time.
