Abstract
Profiting from the dual high basicity and nucleophilicity of organosodium complexes, here we report the stepwise lateral metalation of a wide range of alkyl arenes (MeAr), mediated by hydrocarbon-soluble NaCH2SiMe3 ⋅ PMDETA (PMDETA=N,N,N',N'',N''-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine), followed by nucleophilic addition to diarylethenes of the newly generated NaCH2Ar ⋅ PMDETA complexes. This method grants access to a range of functionalised hydrocarbons in excellent yields and can be upgraded to catalytic regimes when using trans-stilbene, a 10 mol% of the alkyl sodium base and toluene as a solvent. Extending this approach to aromatic ketones leads to the formation of stilbenes under mild reaction conditions, resulting from the deprotonative coupling of toluenes with ketones. Combining spectroscopic studies with the trapping and characterisation of key reaction intermediates, mechanistic insights have been gained, advancing the understanding of coordination effects in organosodium chemistry, and shedding light on their special reactivity profiles.

Abstract
Recently main group compounds have stepped into the territory of precious transition metal compounds with respect to utility in the homogeneous catalysis of fundamentally important organic transformations. Inspired by the need to promote more sustainability in chemistry because of their greater abundance in nature, this change of direction is surprising since main group metals generally do not possess the same breadth of reactivity as precious transition metals. Here, we introduce the dihydropyridylsodium compound, Na-1,2-tBu-DH(DMAP), and its monomeric variant [Na-1,2-tBu-DH(DMAP)]·Me6TREN, and demonstrate their effectiveness in transfer hydrogenation catalysis of the representative alkene 1,1-diphenylethylene to the alkane 1,1-diphenylethane using 1,4-cyclohexadiene as hydrogen source [DMAP = 4-dimethylaminopyridine; Me6TREN = tris(N,N-dimethyl-2-aminoethyl)amine]. Sodium is appealing because of its high abundance in the earth's crust and oceans, but organosodium compounds have been rarely used in homogeneous catalysis. The success of the dihydropyridylsodium compounds can be attributed to their high solubility and reactivity in organic solvents.

Abstract
Deaggregating the alkyl sodium NaCH2 SiMe3 with polydentate nitrogen ligands enables the preparation and characterisation of new, hydrocarbon soluble chelated alkylsodium reagents. Equipped with significantly enhanced metalating power over their organolithium counterparts, these systems can promote controlled sodiation of weakly acidic benzylic C-H bonds from a series of toluene derivatives under mild stoichiometric conditions. This has been demonstrated through the benzylic aroylation of toluenes with Weinreb amides, that delivers a wide range of 2-arylacetophenones in good to excellent yields. Success in isolating and determining the structures of key organometallic intermediates has provided useful mechanistic insight into these new sodium-mediated transformations.

Abstract
Rare examples of heavier alkali metal manganates [{(AM)Mn(CH2 SiMe3 )(N'Ar )2 }∞ ] (AM=K, Rb, or Cs) [N'Ar =N(SiMe3 )(Dipp), where Dipp=2,6-iPr2 -C6 H3 ] have been synthesised with the Rb and Cs examples crystallographically characterised. These heaviest manganates crystallise as polymeric zig-zag chains propagated by AM⋅⋅⋅π-arene interactions. Key to their preparation is to avoid Lewis base donor solvents. In contrast, using multidentate nitrogen donors encourages ligand scrambling leading to redistribution of these bimetallic manganate compounds into their corresponding homometallic species as witnessed for the complete Li - Cs series. Adding to the few known crystallographically characterised unsolvated and solvated rubidium and caesium s-block metal amides, six new derivatives ([{AM(N'Ar )}∞ ], [{AM(N'Ar )⋅TMEDA}∞ ], and [{AM(N'Ar )⋅PMDETA}∞ ] where AM=Rb or Cs) have been structurally authenticated. Utilising monodentate diethyl ether as a donor, it was also possible to isolate and crystallographically characterise sodium manganate [(Et2 O)2 Na(n Bu)Mn[(N'Ar )2 ], a monomeric, dinuclear structure prevented from aggregating by two blocking ether ligands bound to sodium.

Abstract
Arylmethyl anions allow alkali-metals to bind in a σ-fashion to the lateral carbanionic centre or a π-fashion to the aryl ring or in between these extremities, with the trend towards π bonding increasing on descending group 1. Here we review known alkali metal structures of diphenylmethane, fluorene, 2-benzylpyridine and 4-benzylpyridine. Next, we synthesise Li, Na, K monomers of these diarylmethyls using polydentate donors PMDETA or Me6 TREN to remove competing oligomerizing interactions, studying the effect that two aromatic rings has on negative charge (de)localisation via NMR, X-ray crystallographic and DFT studies. Diphenylmethyl and fluorenyl anions maintain C(H)-M interactions regardless of alkali-metal, although the adjacent arene carbons engage in interactions with larger alkali-metals. Introducing a nitrogen atom into the ring (at the 2- or 4-position) encourages relocalisation of negative charge away from the deprotonated carbon and onto nitrogen. Phenyl(2-pyridyl)methyl moves from an enamide formation at one extremity (lithium) to an aza-allyl formation at the other extremity (potassium), while C- or N-coordination modes become energetically viable for Na and K phenyl(4-pyridyl)methyl complexes.

Abstract
This work comprehensively investigated the coordination chemistry of a hexa-dentate neutral amine ligand, namely, N,N',N"-tris-(2-N-diethylaminoethyl)-1,4,7-triaza-cyclononane (DETAN), with group-1 metal cations (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+). Versatile coordination modes were observed, from four-coordinate trigonal pyramidal to six-coordinate trigonal prismatic, depending on the metal ionic radii and metal's substituent. For comparison, the coordination chemistry of a tetra-dentate tris-[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine (Me6Tren) ligand was also studied. This work defines the available coordination modes of two multidentate amine ligands (DETAN and Me6Tren), guiding future applications of these ligands for pursuing highly reactive and elusive s-block and rare-earth metal complexes.

Abstract
Monomeric organolithium (LiR) complexes could provide enhanced Li-C bond reactivity and suggest mechanisms for a plethora of LiR-mediated reactions. They are highly sought-after but remain a synthetic challenge for organometallic chemists. In this work, we report the synthesis and characterisation of a monomeric (trimethylsilyl)methyl lithium complex, namely [Li(CH2SiMe3)(κ3-N,N',N''-Me6Tren)] (1), where Me6Tren is a tetradentate neutral amine ligand. The structure of 1 was comprehensively examined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, variable temperature NMR spectroscopy and electron absorption spectroscopy. Complex 1 decomposes via ligand C-H and C-N activations to produce a Li amide complex 2. Preliminary reactivity studies of 1 reveal CO insertion and C-H activation reaction patterns.

Abstract
A series of lithium complexes with trianionic bis(trityl)/aryloxide ligands were prepared by triple deprotonation of phenols with two ortho-diarylmethyl substituents. Transmetalation with one of the lithium complexes via salt metathesis resulted in the synthesis of corresponding Mg and Zn complexes, which showed distinct coordination stoichiometry and structures. The metal complexes were characterized by multi-nuclear NMR, UV–vis, and infrared spectroscopy. Additionally, the redox property of a trilithium compound was investigated by electrochemical methods. X-ray crystallography revealed that the new bis(trityl)/aryloxide ligands could simultaneously bind to two nearby metal centers both in chelating κ2-O,C fashion, making themselves rare examples of tridentate binucleating alkyl/aryloxo scaffolds.

Abstract
Regioselective 1,1',3,3'-tetrazincation [C-H to C-Zn(tBu)] of ferrocene has been achieved by reaction of a fourfold excess of di-t-butylzinc (tBu2Zn) with sodium 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide (NaTMP) in hexane solution manifested in the trimetallic iron-sodium-zinc complex [Na4(TMP)4Zn4(tBu)4{(C5H3)2Fe}], 1. X-ray crystallographic studies supported by DFT modelling reveal the structure to be an open inverse crown in which two [Na(TMP)Zn(tBu)Na(TMP)Zn(tBu)]2+ cationic units surround a {(C5H3)2Fe}4- tetraanion. Detailed C6D6 NMR studies have assigned the plethora of 1H and 13C chemical shifts of this complex. It exists in a major form in which capping and bridging TMP groups interchange, as well as a minor form that appears to be an intermediate in this complicated exchange phenomenon. Investigation of 1 has uncovered two distinct reactivities. Two of its peripheral t-butyl carbanions formally deprotonate toluene at the lateral methyl group to generate benzyl ligands that replace these carbanions in [Na4(TMP)4Zn4(tBu)2(CH2Ph)2{(C5H3)2Fe}], 2, which retains its tetrazincated ferrocenyl core. Benzyl-Na π-arene interactions are a notable feature of 2. In contrast, reaction with pyridine affords the crystalline product {[Na·4py][Zn(py*)2(tBu)·py]}∞, 3, where py is neutral pyridine (C5H5N) and py* is the anion (4-C5H4N), a rare example of pyridine deprotonated/metallated at the 4-position. This ferrocene-free complex appears to be a product of core reactivity in that the core-positioned ferrocenyl anions of 1, in company with TMP anions, have formally deprotonated the heterocycle.

Abstract
Though alkali metal NacNac (β-diketiminate) complexes have been utilised in synthesis as NacNac-transfer agents, studies of them in their own right with small molecules are exceptionally rare. Here, the lithium compound of the common 2,6-diisopropylphenyl-β-methyldiketiminate [NacNac(Dipp, Me)] ligand is investigated with carbon dioxide and isocyanates. In all four cases reaction occurs at the backbone γ-C atom of the NacNac ligand, which redistributes electronically into a diimine. Insertion of CO2 gives an eight-atom carboxylate (Li2 O4 C2 ) ring at the γ-C site in a dimer. Insertion of tBuNCO gives a secondary amide at the γ-C site in a monomer with TMEDA chelating lithium. Double insertion of tBuNCO and (adventitious) oxygen gives a dimer with a (LiO)2 central core involving the latter source. Insertion of less bulky (iPrNCO) gives a dimer with dimerisation through the C=O bonds of the emergent secondary amide function.

Abstract
We report the synthesis, structure and reactivity of molecular amidomagnesium cations bearing tris{2-(dimethylamino)-ethyl}amine (Me6TREN). Me6TREN binds to the cationic magnesium centre exhibiting κ4 and κ3 coordination modes in [Me6TREN-Mg-N(SiHMe2)2]+ and [Me6TREN-Mg-N(SiMe3)2]+ respectively. [Me6TREN-Mg-N(SiHMe2)2]+ reacts with benzophenone resulting in the insertion of the carbonyl group across β-SiH bond. The reaction between [Me6TREN-Mg-N(SiMe3)2]+ and CO2 leads to [Me6TREN-Mg-OSiMe3]+, while the reaction with H2O results in [Me6TREN-Mg-OH]22+. Attempts to prepare hydridomagnesium cations from [Me6TREN-Mg-N(SiMe3)2]+ using KH resulted in the precipitation of MgH2 and the isolation of [(Me6TREN)K(THF)3]+.

Abstract
Facile α-H elimination from tetrakis(trimethylsilylmethyl)titanium precursors to give adducts of (alkylidene)bis(alkyl)titanium complexes is induced by light alkali metal amides of the NNNN-type macrocyclic anionic ligand Me3 TACD [(Me3 TACD)H=1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane]. In the crystal, the alkali metal interacts with the carbene carbon atom or with the CH2 group of the trimethylsilymethyl ligand. The nucleophilic character of the carbene carbon atom was shown by the reaction with benzophenone and terminal acetylenes.

Abstract
As a result of the increased polarity of the metal-carbon bond when going down the group of the periodic table, the heavier alkali metal organyl compounds are generally more reactive and less stable than their lithium congeners. We now report a reverse trend for alkali metal carbenoids. Simple substitution of lithium by the heavier metals (Na, K) results in a significant stabilization of these usually highly reactive compounds. This allows their isolation and handling at room temperature and the first structure elucidation of sodium and potassium carbenoids. The control of stability was used to control reactivity and selectivity. Hence, the Na and K carbenoids act as selective carbene-transfer reagents, whereas the more labile lithium systems give rise to product mixtures. Additional fine tuning of the M-C interaction by means of crown ether addition further allows for control of the stability and reactivity.

Transmetallation of lithiodihydropyridines with Group 1 alkoxides provides facile access to reactive MH (M = Na, K) sources, which show significant structural diversity due in part to the distinct ways that Na/K engage with the σ (green) and π (red) donor systems of the DHP ligands.

Abstract
When n-hexane solutions of an excess of sodium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (NaHMDS) are combined with cesium halide (halide = Cl, Br, or I) in the presence of the tetradentate donor molecule [tris[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine] (Me6TREN), the isolation and characterization of a series of sodium amide/sodium halide mixed aggregates was forthcoming. Cesium halide was employed because it efficiently reacted with NaHMDS to produce a molecular, soluble source of sodium halide salt (which was subsequently captured by an excess of NaHMDS) via a methathetical reaction. These mixed sodium amide/sodium halide complexes are formally sodium sodiates, are deficient in halide with respect to the amide, and have the general formula [{Na5(μ-HMDS)5(μ5-X)}{Na(Me6TREN)}] [where X = Cl (1), Br (2), or I (3)]. The influence of the donor ligand was studied for the NaI/NaHMDS system, and when n-hexane solutions of this composition were treated with tridentate donors such as N,N,N',N″,N″-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) or N,N,N',N'-tetramethyldiaminoethyl ether (TMDAE), solvent-separated ion-pair cocomplexes [Na5(μ-HMDS)5(μ5-I)](-)[Na3(μ-HMDS)2(PMDETA)2](+) (4) and [Na5(μ-HMDS)5(μ5-I)](-)[Na(TMDAE)2](+) (5) were isolated. However, upon reaction with bidentate proligands such as the chiral diamine (R,R)-N,N,N',N'-tetramethylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine [(R,R)-TMCDA] or N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA), neutral complexes [Na4(μ-HMDS)3(μ4-I)(donor)2] [donor = (R,R)-TMCDA (6) and TMEDA (7)] were produced. To illustrate the generality of the latter reaction with other halides, [Na4(μ-HMDS)3(μ4-Br)(TMEDA)2] (8) was also prepared by employing NaBr in the synthesis instead of NaI.

Abstract
1-Lithio-2-alkyl-1,2-dihydropyridines, easily formed from addition of (n- or t-)BuLi to pyridine, have been compared; the steric bulk of the branched alkyl substituent enforces lesser oligomerization, thus enhancing alkane solubility making it an amenable, convenient lithium hydride transfer reagent in non-polar, aliphatic media.

Abstract
Molecular potassium silyl [K(Me6TREN)SiPh3] was used as precursor for the synthesis of the hydrogen storage material α-[KSiH3] under mild conditions. Facilitated by the neutral amine ligand Me6TREN, the hydrogenolysis proceeded selectively across the Si–CPhbond.
