Influence of Selenocyanate Ligands on the Transition Temperature and Cooperativity of bapbpy-Based Fe(II) Spin-Crossover Compounds

The role of intermolecular interactions in [Fe(X-salEen)2]ClO4 spin crossover complexes

Two new spin crossover (SCO) Fe(III) compounds were prepared, their structures were analysed and their magnetic properties were investigated. An exhaustive analysis of the effects of halogen substitution and aromatic ring functionalisation on the magnetic properties of non-solvated Fe(III) perchlorate complexes has been performed. Through comparative analysis, different magnetic profiles were found for the compounds studied, namely F (1), Cl (2), H (3), Br (4a, 4b), and I (5). Using tools like Hirshfeld analysis, the study revealed patterns in octahedral distortions and deviations from the ideal octahedral geometry. The SCO phenomenon as the conducting wire in this study, emphasises the influence of intermolecular interactions on the low spin (LS) to high spin (HS) transitions in these halogen-substituted complexes. The prevalence of H⋯H contributions has been demonstrated, albeit being the weakest and an inverse strength relationship in H⋯X interactions ranging from F to I. The findings not only interpret the intricate balance between halogen substitution, functionalisation, and intermolecular interactions in modulating magnetic properties but also direct future works in designing similar molecular systems.

Spin Interconversion of Heme-Peroxo-Copper Complexes Facilitated by Intramolecular Hydrogen-Bonding Interactions

Synthetic peroxo-bridged high-spin (HS) heme-(μ-η2:η1-O22-)-Cu(L) complexes incorporating (as part of the copper ligand) intramolecular hydrogen-bond (H-bond) capabilities and/or steric effects are herein demonstrated to affect the complex's electronic and geometric structure, notably impacting the spin state. An H-bonding interaction with the peroxo core favors a low-spin (LS) heme-(μ-η1:η1-O22-)-Cu(L) structure, resulting in a reversible temperature-dependent interconversion of spin state (5 coordinate HS to 6 coordinate LS). The LS state dominates at low temperatures, even in the absence of a strong trans-axial heme ligand. Lewis base addition inhibits the H-bond facilitated spin interconversion by competition for the H-bond donor, illustrating the precise H-bonding interaction required to induce spin-crossover (SCO). Resonance Raman spectroscopy (rR) shows that the H-bonding pendant interacts with the bridging peroxide ligand to stabilize the LS but not the HS state. The H-bond (to the Cu-bound O atom) acts to weaken the O-O bond and strengthen the Fe-O bond, exhibiting ν(M-O) and ν(O-O) values comparable to analogous known LS complexes with a strong donating trans-axial ligand, 1,5-dicyclohexylimidazole, (DCHIm)heme-(μ-η1:η1-O22-)-Cu(L). Variable-temperature (-90 to -130 °C) UV-vis and 2H NMR spectroscopies confirm the SCO process and implicate the involvement of solvent binding. Examining a case of solvent binding without SCO, thermodynamic parameters were obtained from a van't Hoff analysis, accounting for its contribution in SCO. Taken together, these data provide evidence for the H-bond group facilitating a core geometry change and allowing solvent to bind, stabilizing a LS state. The rR data, complemented by DFT analysis, reveal a stronger H-bonding interaction with the peroxo core in the LS compared to the HS complexes, which enthalpically favors the LS state. These insights enhance our fundamental understanding of secondary coordination sphere influences in metalloenzymes.

Chiral and Racemic Spin Crossover Polymorphs in a Family of Mononuclear Iron(II) Compounds

Understanding the origin of cooperativity and the equilibrium temperature of transition (T_1/2) displayed by the spin-crossover (SCO) compounds as well as controlling these parameters are of paramount importance for future applications. For this task, the occurrence of polymorphism, presented by a number of SCO complexes, may provide deep insight into the influence of the supramolecular organization on the SCO behavior. In this context, herein we present a novel family of mononuclear octahedral Fe^II complexes with formula cis-[Fe(bqen)(NCX)₂], where bqen is the chelating tetradentate ligand N,N'-bis(8-quinolyl)ethane-1,2-diamine and X = S, Se. Depending on the preparation method, these compounds crystallize in either the orthorhombic or the trigonal symmetry systems. While the orthorhombic phase is composed of a racemic mixture of mononuclear complexes (polymorph I), the trigonal phase contains only one of the two possible enantiomers (Λ or Δ), thereby generating a chiral crystal (polymorph II). The four derivatives undergo SCO behavior with well-differentiated T_1/2 values occurring in the interval 90-233 K. On one hand, T_1/2 is about 110 K (polymorph I) and 87 K (polymorph II) higher for the selenocyanate derivatives in comparison to those for their thiocyanate counterparts. These differences in T_1/2 are ascribed not only to the higher ligand field induced by the selenocyanate anion but also to a remarkable difference in the structural reorganization of the [FeN₆] coordination core upon SCO. Likewise, the higher cooperativity observed for the thiocyanate derivatives seems to be related to their stronger intermolecular interactions within the crystal. On the other hand, T_1/2 is about 53 K (thiocyanate) and 29 K (selenocyanate) higher for the trigonal polymorph II in comparison to those for the orthorhombic polymorph I. These differences, and the small changes observed in cooperativity, stem from the slightly different hetero- and homochiral crystal packing generated by the cis-[Fe(bqen)(NCX)₂] molecules, which determines subtle adaptations in the intermolecular contacts and the Fe^II coordination core.

Mononuclear Fe(II) Complexes Based on the Methylpyrazinyl-Diamine Ligand: Chemical-, Thermo- and Photocontrol of Their Magnetic Switchability

Two new mononuclear Fe(II) complexes, [Fe(^2MeL_pz)(NCX)₂] (L = N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-bis((pyrazin-2-yl)methyl)-1,2-ethanediamine and X = S (1), BH₃ (2)), have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, optical reflectivity, and photomagnetic measurements. They have similar FeN₆ coordination environments offered by the tetradentate ligand with a cis-α conformation and two NCX^- coligands in cis positions. However, 1 and 2 have different molecular arrangements and crystal packings, and are isolated in orthorhombic Pbnb and monoclinic C2/c space groups, respectively. 1 remains in a high spin state (S = 2) over all temperatures while 2 undergoes a spin transition around 168 K with a small thermal hysteresis of about 0.4 K (at a temperature scan rate of 1.3 K min^-1). This phase transition, which can also be optically detected due to the associated marked change of the sample color, occurs between two structurally characterized phases, which exhibit Fe(II) complexes in their high spin and low spin states at high and low temperatures, respectively. The reversible photoswitching between these two states has also been confirmed at low temperatures using well separated wavelength irradiations.
