Abstract
Borole-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have garnered attention in recent years due to their attractive photophysical properties and potential utility in electronic devices. In this work, a borole-doped PAH, 12-boradibenzofluorene, is synthesized and formal intermolecular nitrene and oxygen atom insertion reactions were employed to access 1,2-azaborine- and 1,2-oxaborine-containing analogues of the carbonaceous PAH pentaphene. Iodosobenzene is established as a versatile reagent for oxygen atom insertion reactions into a variety of borole species to access 1,2-oxaborine systems.

Abstract
While attractive interactions between borane and olefin have been postulated to trigger various boron-mediated organic transformations, proximity structures of these functional groups, other than the formation of weak van der Waals complexes, have never been directly observed. Here we show that a close intramolecular borane-olefin interaction operates in macrocyclic systems containing borane and olefinic groups obtained by multi-step 1,2-carboboration between a strained alkyne and 9-borafluorene derivatives. Depending on Lewis acidity of the borane moiety and the size of the macrocycles, the magnitude of interaction changes, resulting in different reaction modes. The whole picture of the multi-step reactions has been revealed experimentally with theoretical supports. The present finding may not only provide a deeper understanding of the fundamental boron-mediated interaction but also lead to the development of new organic transformations involving molecular activation by boranes.

Abstract
The first examples of Lewis base adducts of the parent boraphosphaketene (H2 B-PCO) and their cyclodimers are prepared. One of these adducts is shown to undergo mild decarbonylation and phosphinidene insertion into a B-C bond of a borole, forming very rare examples of 1,2-phosphaborinines, B/P isosteres of benzene. The strong donor properties of these 1,2-phosphaborinines are confirmed by the synthesis of their π complexes with the Group 6 metals.

Abstract
Density functional theory calculations have been performed to study the diverse reactivity of pentaphenylborole toward different epoxides. We systematically investigated the effect of substituents on epoxides for the preference/competition of three experimentally observed pathways, that is, intramolecular proton transfer, direct ring expansion via insertion of one epoxide molecule, and ring expansion via insertion of two epoxide molecules. Our calculations also predicted a high competitivity between the proton transfer and direct ring expansion pathways for the epoxide containing both alkyl and aryl substituents.

Abstract
This work describes the synthesis and characterization of a highly reactive cationic borole. Halide abstraction with Li{Al[OC(CF3 )3 ]4 } from the NHC-chloroborole adduct yields the first stable NHC-supported 1-(Me NHC)-2,5-(SiMe3 )2 -3,4-(Ph*)2 -borole cation. Electronically, it features both a five-membered cyclic conjugated 4 π-electron system and a cationic charge and thus resembles the yet elusive cyclopentadienyl cation. The borole cation was characterized crystallographically, spectroscopically (NMR, UV/Vis), by cyclovoltammetry, microanalysis and mass-spectrometry and its electronic structure was probed computationally. The cation reacts with tolane and reversibly binds carbon monoxide. Direct comparison with the structurally related, yet neutral, 1-mesityl borole reveals strong Lewis acidity, reduced HOMO-LUMO gaps, and increased anti-aromatic character.

Abstract
A cyclopentadienyl-substituted alumole is shown to undergo ring expansions with a series of organic azides, affording 1,2-azaaluminabenzenes either with or without an azo group.
Aside from simple Lewis acid–base chemistry, the reaction chemistry of aluminacyclopentadienes, which are commonly referred to as aluminoles or simply alumoles, remains relatively underdeveloped. To date, few attempts to extend their inherent insertion and cycloaddition reactivity to the construction of stable aluminum-containing heterocycles have been reported. Herein, we demonstrate the selective ring expansion of a cyclopentadienyl-substituted alumole with a series of organic azides to form unsaturated six-membered AlN heterocycles. Depending on the substituent on the azide, the reaction proceeds either with or without loss of dinitrogen, leading to incorporation of only the “NR” unit of the azide or the entire azo substituent into the periphery of the heterocycle. A deeper understanding of these ring expansion reactions is reached through computational studies, illustrating deviations in the mechanism as a function of the organic azide employed.

Abstract
N‐Heterocyclic carbene (NHC)‐ and cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC)‐stabilized borafluorene radicals have been isolated and characterized by elemental analysis, single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction, UV/Vis absorption, cyclic voltammetry (CV), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and theoretical studies. Both the CAAC–borafluorene radical (2) and the NHC–borafluorene radical (4) have a considerable amount of spin density localized on the boron atoms (0.322 for 2 and 0.369 for 4). In compound 2, the unpaired electron is also partly delocalized over the CAAC ligand carbeneC and N atoms. However, the unpaired electron in compound 4 mainly resides throughout the borafluorene π‐system, with significantly less delocalization over the NHC ligand. These results highlight the Lewis base dependent electrostructural tuning of materials‐relevant radicals. Notably, this is the first report of crystalline borafluorene radicals, and these species exhibit remarkable solid‐state and solution stability.

Abstract
Dimeric boroles as thermal sources of monomers.
Monomeric boroles have been gaining attention as reagents for the synthesis of heterocycles due to their ability to insert atoms into the BC4 ring in a single step. Although unique boron frameworks can be accessed via this methodology, the products feature aryl substitution on the carbon centers as steric bulk is required to preclude borole dimerization. This work demonstrates that insertion chemistry is possible with Diels–Alder dimeric boroles and that such reactivity is not exclusive to monomeric boroles with bulky groups. With 1-phenyl-2,3,4,5-tetramethylborole dimer, the formal 1,1-insertion of a nitrene and sulfur generate the six-membered aromatic 1,2-azaborine and 1,2-thiaborine, respectively. The isolation of the 1,2-thiaborine enabled the synthesis of an η6-chromium complex. Benzophenone and diphenylketene readily insert a CO unit to generate BOC5 seven-membered rings confirming dimeric boroles can serve as monomeric synthons in 1,2-insertion reactions. An epoxide did not furnish the anticipated eight-membered BOC6 ring, instead provided a bicyclic system with a BOC3 ring. The insertion chemistry was demonstrated with two other borole dimers featuring different substitution with diphenylketene as a substrate. This work elevates borole insertion chemistry to a new level to access products that do not require bulky substitution.

Abstract
The pentaaryl borole (Ph*C)4 BXylF [Ph*=3,5-tBu2 (C6 H3 ); XylF =3,5-(CF3 )2 (C6 H3 )] reacts with low-valent Group 13 precursors AlCp* and GaCp* by two divergent routes. In the case of [AlCp*]4 , the borole reacts as an oxidising agent and accepts two electrons. Structural, spectroscopic, and computational analysis of the resulting unprecedented neutral η5 -Cp*,η5 -[(Ph*C)4 BXylF ] complex of AlIII revealed a strong, ionic bonding interaction. The formation of the heteroleptic borole-cyclopentadienyl "aluminocene" leads to significant changes in the 13 C NMR chemical shifts within the borole unit. In the case of the less-reductive GaCp*, borole (Ph*C)4 BXylF reacts as a Lewis acid to form a dynamic adduct with a dative 2-center-2-electron Ga-B bond. The Lewis adduct was also studied structurally, spectroscopically, and computationally.

Abstract
Efficient 1,2-carboboration reactions to the C=N bond of carbodiimides with 9-borafluorenes, which give rise to cyclic borane-amidine conjugates with a seven-membered BNC5 ring, are reported. The resulting cyclic borane-amidine conjugates can be hydrolyzed into an acyclic bifunctional biaryl compound carrying both boronic acid and amidine groups, rendering the utility of the two-step protocol for the synthesis of multi-functionalized molecular systems with a potential as a supramolecular building block. Furthermore, the conjugated structure of the cyclic boron-amidine compounds can be changed upon alkylation of the boron atom that increases the coordination number of boron. The combination of Lewis acid (borane) and conjugated base (amidine) provides rich structural diversity of heteroatom-containing π-conjugated systems.

Abstract
Establishing access to a bulky tetraaryl dilithiobutadiene (Ph*C)4 Li2 (Ph*=3,5-tBu2 (C6 H3 )) allowed for the synthesis of five-membered heterocycles with incorporated main-group elements. Along with an amino borole, a set of substituted pentaaryl boroles (Ph*C)4 BAr has been synthesized. The examination of their absorption spectra and computational studies by means of DFT granted insight into the influence of peripheral substituents on the electronic features of the parent pentaphenyl borole (PhC)4 BPh. Introduction of the more electron-rich Ph* residue at the carbon atoms increases the HOMO energy, redshifting the visible π/π*-absorption bands compared with the parent pentaphenyl borole. The influence on the frontier orbitals of three different boron-bound aryls with electronically modulating substituents in the remote 3,5-positions Ar=3,5-R2 -C6 H3 (R=Me, H, CF3 ) was studied. The substituents were found to increase (+I effect, Me) or decrease (-I effect, CF3 ) the LUMO energy, thus directly affecting the visible absorption spectra. This represents the first study on HOMO-LUMO-gap adjustments by a combined push-pull approach of a substituted pentaphenylborole.

Abstract
The reactions of a monomeric borole and a dimeric borole with 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene and 1,3-cyclohexadiene were investigated. The monomeric borole reacted at ambient temperature whereas heat was required to crack the dimer to form the monomer and induce reactivity. 2,3-Dimethyl-1,3-butadiene reacts to give diverse products resulting from a cycloaddition process with the B-C moiety of the boroles acting as a dienophile, followed by rearrangements to furnish bicyclic species. For 1,3-cyclohexadiene, a [4+2] process is observed in which 1,3-cyclohexadiene serves as the dienophile and the boroles as the diene partner. The experimental results are corroborated with mechanistic theoretical calculations that indicate boroles can serve as either a diene or dienophile in cycloaddition reactions with dienes.

Abstract
We report on the reactivity of isocyanates towards tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane which was found to result in the 1,2-carboboration of the isocyanate C[double bond, length as m-dash]O bond. The resulting six-membered heterocyclic compounds can be rationalized as adducts of imino-boranes with isocyanates and react accordingly, allowing for the dissociative displacement of the trapped isocyanate moiety in a series of exchange reactions. Related carboelementation reactions with the heavier group 13 analogues, Al(C6F5)3 and Ga(C6F5)3, result in a dimerization of the carboboration products to afford eight-membered heterocycles.

Abstract
Most of the chemical and biological processes involving the fixation and transformation of small molecules have long been exclusive for metal complexes. Meanwhile, the last decades have seen a significant advance in main group chemistry that mimics transition-metal complexes, among which various boron-containing systems have been successful in mediating the small molecule activation. In this review, we focus on boron-containing heterocycles enabling the activation of σ- and π-bonds in small molecules, in conjunction with the proposed mechanisms.

Abstract
The photoreactivity of 9-borafluorene-based, C,C-chelated organoborates was investigated. Unlike the related tetraarylborates, the charge-transfer transitions imparted by the biphenyl chelate lead to selective insertion of one aryl substituent into the endocyclic B-C bond of the 9-borafluorene moiety, resulting in the formation of boratanorcaradienes. This photoreaction likely proceeds according to a Zimmerman rearrangement, which is analogous to one of the initially proposed mechanisms for tetraarylborates and provides additional insight into these long-debated photochemical reactions.

Abstract
The introduction of main group elements into conjugated scaffolds is emerging as a key route to novel optoelectronic materials. Herein, an efficient and versatile way to synthesize polymerizable 9,10-azaboraphenanthrene (BNP)-containing monomers by aromaticity-driven ring expansion reactions between highly antiaromatic borafluorene and azides is reported, and the corresponding conjugated small molecules and polymers are developed as well. The BNP-containing small molecules and conjugated polymers showed good air/moisture stability and notable fluorescence properties. Addition of fluoride ions to the BNP-based small molecules and polymers induced a rapid change in the emission color from blue to green/yellow, respectively, accompanied by strong intensity changes. The conjugated polymers showed better ratiometric sensing performance than small molecules due to the exciton migration along the conjugated chains. Further experiments showed that the sensing process is fully reversible. The films prepared by solution-deposition of BNP-based compounds in the presence of polycaprolactone also showed good ratiometric sensing for fluoride ions.

Abstract
The reactions of pentaphenylborole with pyridines with a pendent aryl group in the 2-position, specifically 2-phenylpyridine and 2,2'-bipyridine, readily afforded adducts. Upon thermolysis, the adducts converted to ortho C-H addition products with the two substituents introduced onto the diene on the boracyclic carbon atoms adjacent to boron in a syn fashion. Photolysis of the syn 2-phenypyridine product led to isomerization to the anti conformer which did not readily occur for the 2,2'-bipyridine complex. Such C-H bond reactivity is uncommon for main group elements and provides insight into methodologies to access boron frameworks.

Boroles undergo dimerization reactions to give Diels-Alder (DA) dimers, bridged-bicyclic (BB) dimers or spiro dimers (SD) depending on the substituents on the borole. We performed DFT calculations to investigate how different substituents at the carbon atoms of the butadiene backbone as well as at the boron atom influence the dimerization reaction pathways. The DFT results show that, in general, both the DA and BB dimers are easily accessible kinetically, and the DA dimers are thermodynamically more stable than the BB dimers. When the substituent-substituent repulsive steric interactions are alleviated to a certain extent, the BB dimers are more stable than the DA dimer, and become accessible. The SD dimers are generally kinetically difficult to obtain. However, we found that aryl substituents promote the formation of the SD dimers.

Abstract
The reactions of isothiocyanates with the antiaromatic pentaphenylborole were investigated, revealing significantly different outcomes than the analogous reactions with isocyanates. The 1:1 stoichiometric reaction products isolated include a seven-membered BNC5 heterocycle and a fused bicyclic 4/5-ring system. Studies suggest that the seven-membered ring undergoes an intramolecular [2 + 2] electrocyclic ring closure to produce the bicyclic system. The only derivative for which stoichiometry influenced the reaction outcome was 4-methoxyphenylisothiocyanate. The reaction of borole with an excess of 4-methoxyphenylisothiocyanate resulted in the formation of a fused tetracyclic species with two equivalents of isothiocyanate incorporated into the product. Rational pathways for these unusual transformations are presented.

Abstract
Access to novel imine-substituted 1,2-azaborinines, as well as highly arylated boracyclohexa-3,5-dienes has been developed by ring expansion of boroles with diazoalkanes with varying degrees of steric bulk. The formation of a diazoalkane intermediate is also discussed for the reaction of ortho-brominated p-tolyl-azide with 1,2,3,4,5-pentaphenylborole. Structural details as well as UV/Vis spectroscopic and cyclic voltammetric data are provided. These boron-containing heterocycles have the potential to serve as building blocks for boron-containing materials.
