Long-Lived Polypyridyl Based Mononuclear Ruthenium Complexes: Synthesis, Structure, and Azo Dye Decomposition

Two mononuclear ruthenium complexes [(bpy)₂Ru^IIL₁/L₂](ClO₄)₂ ([1]²⁺/[2]²⁺) (bpy-2,2' bipyridine, L₁ = 2,3-di(pyridin-2-yl)pyrazino[2,3-f][1,10]phenanthroline) and L₂ = 2,3-di(thiophen-2-yl)pyrazino[2,3-f][1,10]phenanthroline have been synthesized. The complexes have been characterized using various analytical techniques. The complex [1]²⁺ has further been characterized by its single crystal X-ray structure suggesting ruthenium is coordinating through the N donors of phenanthroline end. Theoretical investigation suggests that the HOMOs of both complexes are composed of pyridine and pyrazine unit of ligands L₁ and L₂ whereas the LUMOs are formed by the contribution of bipyridine units. The low energy bands at ∼480 nm of the complexes can be assigned as MLCT with partial contribution from ligand transitions, whereas the rest are ligand centered. The complexes have shown Ru^II/Ru^III oxidation couples at E_1/2 at 1.26 (70 mV) V and 1.28 (62 mV) V for [1]²⁺ and [2]²⁺ vs Ag/AgCl, respectively, suggesting no significant role of distal thiophene or pyridine units of the ligands. The complexes are emissive and display solvent dependent emission properties. Both complexes have shown highest emission quantum yield and lifetime in DMSO (ϕ = 0.05 and τ_avg = 460 ns and λ_max^em at 620 nm for [1]²⁺; ϕ = 0.043 and τ_avg = 425 ns and λ_max^em at 635 nm for [2]²⁺). Further, the long luminescent lifetime of these complexes has been utilized to generate reactive oxygen species for efficient azo dye decomposition.

Mesomorphic, micro-Raman and DFT studies of new calamitic liquid crystals; methyl 4-[4-(4-alkoxy benzoyloxy)benzylideneamino]benzoates

The mesomorphic properties of newly synthesized homologous series of calamitic liquid crystals; methyl 4-[4-(4-alkoxy benzoyloxy)benzylideneamino]benzoates, H(2n+1)C(n)OC6H4COOC6H4C(H)=N C6H4COOCH3; n = 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 (MABBAB-n) containing ester and Schiff base groups as linker have been studied by temperature dependent micro-Raman study, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). All members of this series exhibit enantiotropic smectic A (SmA) mesophase with oily streak and focal conic textures. Analyses of Raman marker bands of phenyl rings, Schiff base and ester groups of MABBAB-10 confirm the phase transitions. The Raman study also gives an evidence of breaking of weak intermolecular hydrogen bonds associated with ester groups and formation of new hydrogen bonds through CN bond at Cr→SmA phase transition. The monomer and dimer were optimized and vibrational assignment of MABBAB-10 was also done with density functional theoretical (DFT) technique to understand the experimental results.

Preferred orientation in an angled intercalation site of a chloro-substituted Λ-[Ru(TAP)2(dppz)]2+ complex bound to d(TCGGCGCCGA)2

The crystal structure of the ruthenium DNA 'light-switch' complex Λ-[Ru(TAP)2(11-Cl-dppz)](2+) (TAP=tetraazaphenanthrene, dppz=dipyrido[3,2-a':2',3'-c]phenazine) bound to the oligonucleotide duplex d(TCGGCGCCGA)2 is reported. The synthesis of the racemic ruthenium complex is described for the first time, and the racemate was used in this study. The crystal structure, at atomic resolution (1.0 Å), shows one ligand as a wedge in the minor groove, resulting in the 51(°) kinking of the double helix, as with the parent Λ-[Ru(TAP)2(dppz)](2+). Each complex binds to one duplex by intercalation of the dppz ligand and also by semi-intercalation of one of the orthogonal TAP ligands into a second symmetrically equivalent duplex. The 11-chloro substituent binds with the major component (66%) oriented with the 11-chloro substituent on the purine side of the terminal step of the duplex.

Unexpected lyotropic liquid crystals from ion-induced columnar assembly of Schiff-base macrocycles

Schiff-base macrocycles 1, which have a crown ether-like interior, form ionic nematic lyotropic liquid crystals in various organic solvents when functionalized with long alkoxy substituents and complexed to diverse ammonium and alkali metal salts. From X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies, and by comparison with the organization of macrocycles functionalized with shorter chains, these macrocycles assemble into lyotropic liquid crystals where the macrocycles are stacked and the cation is included in their interiors.

1,10-Phenanthrolinium ionic liquid crystals

The 1,10-phenanthrolinium cation is introduced as a new building block for the design of ionic liquid crystals. 1,10-Phenanthroline, 5-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline, 5-chloro-1,10-phenanthroline, and 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline were quaternized by reaction with 1,3-dibromopropane or 1,2-dibromoethane. The resulting cations were combined with dodecyl sulfate or dioctyl sulfosuccinate anions. The influence of both the cation and anion type on the thermal behavior was investigated. Several of the complexes exhibit mesomorphic behavior, with smectic E phases for the dodecyl sulfate salts and smectic A phases for the dioctyl sulfosuccinate salts. Structural models for the packing of the 1,10-phenanthrolinium and anionic moieties in the liquid-crystalline phases are presented. The ionic compounds show fluorescence in the solid state and in solution.

Thermotropic Ionic Liquid Crystals

The last five years’ achievements in the synthesis and investigation of thermotropic ionic liquid crystals are reviewed. The present review describes the mesomorphic properties displayed by organic, as well as metal-containing ionic mesogens. In addition, a short overview on the ionic polymer and self-assembled liquid crystals is given. Potential and actual applications of ionic mesogens are also discussed.
