Herein, a generalizable method based on the formation of a self-assembled surfactant film was reported to build a nanopipette system. Using this nanopipette, it was found that arginine metabolism shows an age-related difference in Alzheimer's disease.

N-Heterocyclic carbenes and their precursors in functionalised porous materials

Though N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as diverse and powerful discrete functional molecules in pharmaceutics, nanotechnology, and catalysis over decades, the heterogenization of NHCs and their precursors for broader applications in porous materials, like metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), porous coordination polymers (PCPs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), porous organic polymers (POPs), and porous organometallic cages (POMCs) was not extensively studied until the last ten years. By de novo or post-synthetic modification (PSM) methods, myriads of NHCs and their precursors containing building blocks were designed and integrated into MOFs, PCPs, COFs, POPs and POMCs to form various structures and porosities. Functionalisation with NHCs and their precursors significantly expands the scope of the potential applications of porous materials by tuning the pore surface chemical/physical properties, providing active sites for binding guest molecules and substrates and realizing recyclability. In this review, we summarise and discuss the recent progress on the synthetic methods, structural features, and promising applications of NHCs and their precursors in functionalised porous materials. At the end, a brief perspective on the encouraging future prospects and challenges in this contemporary field is presented. This review will serve as a guide for researchers to design and synthesize more novel porous materials functionalised with NHCs and their precursors.

Dual-Metal N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complex (M = Au and Pd)-Functionalized UiO-67 MOF for Alkyne Hydration-Suzuki Coupling Tandem Reaction

Metal N-heterocyclic carbene complexes (NHC-M) have been recognized as an important class of organometallic catalysts. Herein, we demonstrate that different NHC-M (M = Au and Pd) species can be simultaneously introduced into a single metal organic framework (MOF) by direct assembly of NHC-M-decorated ligands and metal ions under solvothermal conditions. The obtained UiO-67-Au/Pd-NHBC MOF with different organometallic NHC-M species can be a highly reusable dual catalyst to sequentially promote alkyne hydration-Suzuki coupling reaction. The potential utility of this strategy is highlighted by the preparation of many more new multicatalysts of this type for various organic transformations in a sequential way.

An NHC-CuCl functionalized metal-organic framework for catalyzing β-boration of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds

A microporous metal-organic framework functionalized with in situ generated NHC-CuCl units (1) has been successfully synthesized from a novel imidazolium-containing ligand. In particular, the MOF 1 can catalyze β-boration of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, while the isoreticular version of 1 (1-im) modified with only imidazolium moiety cannot. This work demonstrates for the first time the heterogeneous catalysis of NHC-Cu(i)Cl within a MOF solid.

N-Heterocyclic Carbenes in Materials Chemistry

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have become one of the most widely studied class of ligands in molecular chemistry and have found applications in fields as varied as catalysis, the stabilization of reactive molecular fragments, and biochemistry. More recently, NHCs have found applications in materials chemistry and have allowed for the functionalization of surfaces, polymers, nanoparticles, and discrete, well-defined clusters. In this review, we provide an in-depth look at recent advances in the use of NHCs for the development of functional materials.

Metal complexes with oxygen-functionalized NHC ligands: synthesis and applications

Ligand design has met with considerable success with both categories of hybrid ligands, which are characterized by chemically different donor groups, and of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs). Their spectacular development and diversity are attracting worldwide interest and offers almost unlimited diversity and potential in e.g. coordination/organometallic main group and transition metal chemistry, catalysis, medicinal chemistry and materials science. This review aims at providing a comprehensive update on a specific class of ligands that has enjoyed much attention in the past few years, at the intersection between the two categories mentioned above, that of hybrid NHC ligands in which the functionality associated with the carbene donor is of the oxygen-donor type. For each type of oxygen-donor present in such chelating (Section 1) or bridging (Section 2) hybrid ligands, we will examine the synthesis, structures and reactivity of their metal complexes and their applications, with a special focus on homogeneous catalysis (Section 3). Thus, hydrogenation, C-H bond activation, C-C, C-N, C-O bond formation, hydrolysis of silanes, oligomerization, polymerization, metathesis, hydrosilylation, C-C bond cleavage, acceptorless dehydrogenation, dehalogenation/hydrogen transfer, oxidation and reduction reactions will be successively presented in a tabular manner, to facilitate an overview and a rapid identification of the relevant publications describing which metals associated with a given oxygen functionality are most suitable. The literature coverage includes the year 2015.

Post-synthetically modified MOF for the A3-coupling reaction of aldehyde, amine, and alkyne

A new heterogeneous NHC catalyst (Ag-NHC-MOF) was synthesized by the post-synthetic modification of an azolium-containing metal–organic framework.

Development of a Porous Coordination Polymer with a High Gas Capacity Using a Thiophene-Based Bent Tetracarboxylate Ligand

A new porous coordination polymer (PCP) based on a ligand with a unique bent angle bearing a thiophene-bridged bent carboxylate ligand and the Cu²⁺ ion was synthesized and structurally characterized. The structure has a pillared-layer framework based on a kagomé-like layer with aromatic partition groups. It exhibits a high CO₂ uptake of 180 mL(STP)/g at 1 bar, and 400 mL(STP)/g at 30 bar at 273 K. The uptakes of C₂H₂ and C₂H₄ reach 164 and 160 mL(STP)/g at 298 K and 1 bar, with good selectivity of C₂H₂ and C₂H₄ over CH₄, both of which are among the highest levels of reported PCPs.

Synthesis and catalytic application of N-heterocyclic carbene copper complex functionalized conjugated microporous polymer

The first example of IPr(CuCl) functionalized conjugated microporous polymer has been synthesized and applied for the hydrosilylation of terminal alkynes and hydrosilylation of CO₂. Good catalytic activities and catalytic stability have been achieved.

Effect of the functionalisation route on a Zr-MOF with an Ir-NHC complex for catalysis

A new iridium N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) metallolinker has been synthesised and introduced into a metal-organic framework (MOF), for the first time, via two different routes: direct synthesis and postsynthetic exchange (PSE). The two materials were compared in terms of the Ir loading and distribution using X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), the local Ir structure using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and the catalytic activity. The materials showed good activity and recyclability as catalysts for the isomerisation of an allylic alcohol.

Tuning the structure and function of metal-organic frameworks via linker design

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are constructed from metal ions/clusters coordinated by organic linkers (or bridging-ligands). The hallmark of MOFs is their permanent porosity, which is frequently found in MOFs constructed from metal-clusters. These clusters are often formed in situ, whereas the linkers are generally pre-formed. The geometry and connectivity of a linker dictate the structure of the resulting MOF. Adjustments of linker geometry, length, ratio, and functional-group can tune the size, shape, and internal surface property of a MOF for a targeted application. In this critical review, we highlight advances in MOF synthesis focusing on linker design. Examples of building MOFs to reach unique properties, such as unprecedented surface area, pore aperture, molecular recognition, stability, and catalysis, through linker design are described. Further search for application-oriented MOFs through judicious selection of metal clusters and organic linkers is desirable. In this review, linkers are categorized as ditopic (Section 1), tritopic (Section 2), tetratopic (Section 3), hexatopic (Section 4), octatopic (Section 5), mixed (Section 6), desymmetrized (Section 7), metallo (Section 8), and N-heterocyclic linkers (Section 9).

A cyclization-rearrangement cascade for the synthesis of structurally complex chiral gold(I)-aminocarbene complexes

A facile synthesis of chiral cyclic alkyl aminocarbene-gold(I) complexes from gold-free 1,7-enyne substrates was developed. The novel cyclization-rearrangement reaction sequence is triggered by the addition of (Me2S)AuCl to different 1,7-enynes and leads to structurally unique carbene-gold(I) complexes in high yields. These novel complexes are catalytically active and inhibit the proliferation of different human cancer cell lines.

Solid-state covalent capture of CO2 by using N-heterocyclic carbenes

Capture me! The first report of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) as a solid-state carbon capture reagent is presented. Experimental and theoretical measurements demonstrate the ability of the NHC to react rapidly and stoichiometrically with CO2 at low partial pressures.
