Abstract
Inorganic nanocrystals possess unique physicochemical properties compared to their bulk counterparts. Stabilizing agents are commonly used for the preparation of inorganic nanocrystals with controllable properties. Particularly, colloidal polymers have emerged as general and robust templates for in situ formation and confinement of inorganic nanocrystals. In addition to templating and stabilizing inorganic nanocrystals, colloidal polymers can tailor their physicochemical properties such as size, shape, structure, composition, surface chemistry, and so on. By incorporating functional groups into colloidal polymers, desired functions can be integrated with inorganic nanocrystals, advancing their potential applications. Here, recent advances in the colloidal polymer-templated formation of inorganic nanocrystals are reviewed. Seven types of colloidal polymers, including dendrimer, polymer micelle, stare-like block polymer, bottlebrush polymer, spherical polyelectrolyte brush, microgel, and single-chain nanoparticle, have been extensively applied for the synthesis of inorganic nanocrystals. Different strategies for the development of these colloidal polymer-templated inorganic nanocrystals are summarized. Then, their emerging applications in the fields of catalysis, biomedicine, solar cells, sensing, light-emitting diodes, and lithium-ion batteries are highlighted. Last, the remaining issues and future directions are discussed. This review will stimulate the development and application of colloidal polymer-templated inorganic nanocrystals.

Abstract
Increasing CO2 emissions from industry has disastrous consequences for the environment. Effective utilization of CO2 as a carbon source can address the environmental challenges, and we can address the energy crisis caused by fossil fuel consumption. Electrochemical conversion of CO2 is a promising method recently gaining widespread popularity. Its high productivity, however, remains a major challenge. This work involved a facile novel preparation of a suitable CuO nanocomposite to reduce CO2 into useful fuels effectively. Hydrothermal synthesis was used to synthesize the nanocomposite. The synthesized NC's structure, morphology, and elemental analysis were evaluated using XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and TEM. ICP-OES analysis was performed to quantify Cu concentration in the CuO composite, confirming 98.6% of Cu of the prepared matrix. The cyclic voltammetry method has been used to study the electrochemical activity of NC for CO2 reduction. Additionally, the NMR & GC-MS analyses were performed to identify the product. Regarding CO2 reduction, the NC performed greatly better than the ordinary CuO. In addition, the NC exhibits high structural stability and durability, demonstrating its potential to reduce CO2 into fuels.

Abstract
Metal nanoparticles are widely used in catalysis. Loading metal nanoparticles into polymer brushes has aroused wide attention, but regulation of catalytic performance still needs to be improved. The novel diblock polymer brushes, polystyrene@sodium polystyrene sulfonate-b-poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PSV@PSS-b-PNIPA) and PSV@PNIPA-b-PSS with reversed block sequence, were prepared by surface initiated photoiniferter-mediated polymerization (SI-PIMP) and used as nanoreactors to load silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The block sequence caused the difference of conformation and further affected the catalytic performance. PSV@PNIPA-b-PSS@Ag was found to be able to control the amount of AgNPs exposed to external reactant of 4-nitrophenol at different temperatures to achieve regulation of the reaction rate due to the hydrogen bonds and further physical crosslinking between PNIPA and PSS.

Abstract
It is of great significance to develop novel membranes with dual-function of simultaneously separating oil/water emulsion and degrading the contained water-miscible toxic organic components. To meet this requirement, a dual-functional Ni nanoparticles (NPs)@Ag/C-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite membrane was fabricated via electroless nickel plating strategy in this study. The as-prepared composite membrane possessed superhydrophilicity with water contact angle of 0° and splendid underwater oleophobic property with oil contact angle of 142°. When the membrane was applied for separation of surfactant stabilized oil-in-water emulsion, high permeate flux (about 97 L m-2·h-1 under gravity), oil rejection (about 98.8%) and antifouling property were achieved. Benefitting from the NiNPs@Ag/C-CNTs layer on membrane surface, the composite membrane exhibited high catalytic degradation activity for water-miscible toxic organic pollutant (4-nitrophenol) with addition of NaBH4 in a flow-through mode. Meanwhile, the NiNPs@Ag/C-CNTs composite membrane possessed excellent durability, which was verified by the good structural integrity even under ultrasonic treatment. The cost-efficiency, high separation and degradation performance of the prepared membrane suggested its great potential for treatment of oily wastewater.

Abstract
Three different 3D fibrous-like NiO/Ni(OH)2/Ni‑carbonized spongin-based materials were prepared via a simple sorption-reduction method. Depending on the support used, the catalysts were composed of carbon, nickel oxide, nickel hydroxide and zero-valent nickel, with the surface content of the nickel-containing phase in the range 15.2-26.0 wt%. Catalytic studies showed promising activity in the oxidation of phenolic compounds in water and in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. The oxidation efficiency depends on the substrate used and ranges from 80% for phenol at pH 2 to 99% for 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (4-CPA) and methylchlorophenoxypropionic acid (MCPP). In the reduction reaction, all catalysts exhibited superior activity, with rate constants in the range 0.648-1.022 min-1. The work also includes a detailed investigation of reusability and kinetic studies.

Abstract
A graft copolymer of poly(vinyl alcohol) and polyacrylamide (PVA-g-PAAm) with interacting main and grafted chains was synthesized by radical matrix polymerization of PAAm from the PVA backbone in an aqueous medium. Its basic molecular parameters including the number and length (molecular weight) of grafts were determined using elemental analysis, DTGA and viscometry. The copolymer macromolecules formed special monomolecular micelles of elipsoidal shape and length ~18-64 nm in aqueous solutions due to the formation of intramolecular polycomplexes between the main and grafted chains. This copolymer was used as a hydrophilic matrix for the in situ synthesis of nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs) in aqueous solutions. On the basis of UV-Vis spectroscopy, an original and simple method for monitoring the kinetics of the formation and yield of metal nanoparticles in systems in which a surface plasmon resonance band does not appear has been proposed and implemented. Using this approach, the kinetics of borohydride reduction of Ni-salt to NiNPs in pure water and PVA-g-PAAm solutions was studied depending on the concentrations of Ni-salt and copolymer matrices. An increase in the initial rate of accumulation and yield of NiNPs with an increase in the concentration of Ni-salt and a decrease in both parameters in copolymer solutions in comparison with pure water was established. At the same time, the accumulation rate and NiNP yield in a complex way was depended on the matrix concentration that was determined by the ratio of such factors as a decrease in the diffusion rate of NaBH4 molecules in copolymer solutions and the accumulation of Ni2+-ions in matrix particles due to complexation with active chemical groups at the first stage of reduction process. The morphology and main structural elements of the NiNPs/PVA-g-PAAm composition were revealed using TEM. It was shown that the in situ synthesis of NiNPs in copolymer matrices was accompanied by the “detachment” of PAAm grafts from the main PVA chains and led to the appearance of two new structures, such as “hairy coils” and “hairy rods”, containing small spherical NiNPs (d~0,5–12,0 nm) in isolated and chain states, respectively. The appearance of the latter structures was explained by the formation of coordination complexes of Ni2+-ions with active groups of both PVA and PAAm chains at the first stage of the reduction reaction.

Abstract
Histamine (HA) plays an important role in food safety supervision and is also involved in various physiological functions. Accurate and rapid detection of HA in real sample is count for much as this is the significant prerequisite for its effective monitoring. In this study, we fabricated an electrochemical sensor to detect HA via the pyrolysis of the hydrothermal Ni-MOF (metal-organic frameworks), in which the obtained Ni@C material was deployed as the sensing agent. Ni@C was comprehensively characterized in terms of its morphology, constitution, as well as its electrochemical behavior. The as-prepared sensor (Ni@C/GCE) features excellent electrocatalytic activities. It was also observed that the electrochemical property of the sensor was substantially improved because Ni@C afforded an enlarged active surface and accelerated electron transport. This sensor affords amperometric analysis in the linear range of 10-3-100 μM HA with a 3.2 × 10-4 μM low detection limit (S/N = 3). Many important features, including decent anti-interference, reproducibility, stability, and reliability, were also observed. Importantly, the sensor enabled the measurement of HA in real samples obtained from fish, thus demonstrating its practical potential as a HA analytical detector.

Abstract
Integrating hollow silica spheres with metal nanoparticles to fabricate multifunctional hybrid materials has attracted increasing attention in catalysis, detection, and drug delivery. Here, we report a simple and general method to prepare hollow silica spheres encapsulating silver nanoparticles (Ag@SiO2) based on spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB), which consist of a polystyrene core and densely grafted poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) chains. SPB were firstly used as nanoreactors to generate silver nanoparticles in situ and then used as sacrificial templates to prepare hybrid hollow silica spheres. The resulted Ag@SiO2 composites exhibit high catalytic activity and good reusability for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol by NaBH4. More importantly, this developed approach can be extended to the encapsulation of other metal nanoparticles such as gold nanoparticles into the hollow silica spheres. This work demonstrates that SPB are promising candidates for the preparation of hollow spheres with encapsulated metal nanoparticles and the resulted hybrid spheres show great potential applications in catalysis.

Abstract
The synthesis of inorganic micro-/nano-materials by dry combustion is somewhat dangerous since it is performed under high temperature. The ultrathin Bi nanofilms with 3D structures were synthesized using a safe approach of non-combustion explosion in H2O/DMF solution at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The violent reaction between H2O2 and NH3 · H2O resulted in a non-combustion explosion due to the fast evolution of gases. Then under high temperature and high pressure during solvothermal process, the further slight explosion occurred where the oxygen-containing molecules of H2O2 and NO3 - acted as oxidants, while the hydrogen-containing molecules of NaBH4, NH3 · H2O and DMF acted as reductants. The release of gases was accompanied with BiIII reduction by NaBH4. The 3D structure of ultrathin Bi nanofilms with many void spaces formed due to the explosive force and foams from the sharp liberation of gases. Such ultrathin Bi nanofilms with 3D structure exhibited outstanding catalytic activity for p-nitrophenol hydrogenation which is important to treat the environmental pollution from p-nitrophenol discharge. Within only several seconds p-nitrophenol hydrogenation was completed without delay. The non-combustion explosion exhibits potential applications for the synthesis of 3D ultrathin film materials as high efficient catalysts.

Abstract
Carbon-based composite materials with tunable, ordered mesoporous structures were prepared via the hydrothermal carbonization/soft-template method, with nickel nitrate as the doping source, straw as the carbon source, and F127 as the soft template. By adjusting the additive amounts of Ni and F127, the mesoporous structure was controllable, and results were obtained that varied from an irregular stripe-like hexagonal, a regular stripe-like hexagonal, mixed hexagonal and cubic, to cubic. With a specific surface area in the range of 339-963 m2 g-1, the percentage of mesoporous structures increased from 39.6% to 58.3%. Ni doped into the carbon skeletons existed in the form of metallic Ni and nickel oxide. Increased amounts of nickel nitrate for doping as well as F127 is beneficial for the generation of metallic Ni during the preparation process. The average particle diameter of Ni decreased when the Ni-doped content was increased, and all the average particle sizes were less than 10 nm after F127 was added. The Nim/CSFn catalyst demonstrated high catalytic activity when used for the hydrogenation reaction of p-nitrophenol (PNP) to p-aminophenol (PAP). The conversion of PNP reached 98.79%, and the selectivity for PAP reached 89.6% for Ni2.0/CSF1.5, with a corresponding apparent rate constant of 1.56 × 10-3 S-1, apparent activation energy of 41.86 kJ mol-1, and with the added benefit that the catalyst could be separated and recycled by applying an external magnetic field.

Abstract
Whereas noble metal compounds have long been central in catalysis, Earth-abundant metal-based catalysts have in the same time remained undeveloped. Yet the efficacy of Earth-abundant metal catalysts was already shown at the very beginning of the 20th century with the Fe-catalyzed Haber-Bosch process of ammonia synthesis and later in the Fischer-Tropsch reaction. Nanoscience has revolutionized the world of catalysis since it was observed that very small Au nanoparticles (NPs) and other noble metal NPs are extraordinarily efficient. Therefore the development of Earth-abundant metals NPs is more recent, but it has appeared necessary due to their "greenness". This review highlights catalysis by NPs of Earth-abundant transition metals that include Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, early transition metals (Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Nb and W) and their nanocomposites with emphasis on basic principles and literature reported during the last 5 years. A very large spectrum of catalytic reactions has been successfully disclosed, and catalysis has been examined for each metal starting with zero-valent metal NPs followed by oxides and other nanocomposites. The last section highlights the catalytic activities of bi- and trimetallic NPs. Indeed this later family is very promising and simultaneously benefits from increased stability, efficiency and selectivity, compared to monometallic NPs, due to synergistic substrate activation.

Abstract
Highly active metal nanoparticle (MNP) supported cellulose nanofiber (CNF) composites (Au/CNF, Ni/CNF and Ag/CNF) were prepared for the reduction of 4- and 2-nitrophenols (4-NP and 2-NP) in water. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that the ultrafine nanoparticles (Au, Ni and Ag NPs) were uniformly deposited on CNFs surface. The content of Au (9.7 wt%), Ni (21.5 wt%) and Ag (22.6 wt%) in Au/CNF, Ni/CNF and Ag/CNF respectively was determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and inductive coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) analysis. The chemical state of the MNPs in Au/CNF, Ni/CNF and Ag/CNF was determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The significant metal-support interaction was studied by means of XPS. The Au/CNF, Ni/CNF and Ag/CNF demonstrated excellent catalytic activity towards the reduction of nitrophenols to aminophenols in water. To our delight, even a very low amount of catalyst was also found to be good enough to achieve 100% reduction of 4- and 2-NP with a higher reaction rate (within 5 min). The best rate constant (kapp) values were determined for the cellulose nanocomposites. To the best our knowledge, Au/CNF, Ni/CNF and Ag/CNF are the most efficient nanocatalysts for the reduction of 4- and 2-NP reported to date. The catalytic performance of Au/CNF, Ni/CNF and Ag/CNF was compared with previously reported results. A possible mechanism has been proposed for these catalytic systems. Metal nanoparticles supported cellulose nanofiber composites (Au/CNF, Ni/CNF and Ag/CNF) were found to be highly efficient nanocatalysts for the rapid and selective reduction of nitrophenols in water.![]()

Abstract
Thermosensitive microgels consisting of a solid core of polystyrene and a shell of cross-linked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) were synthesized as nano-reactors, in which Ag–Pd bimetallic nanoparticles were prepared through simultaneous in situ reduction reaction. The spatial distribution of metallic nanoparticles in the microgels was analyzed by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and the results indicated that metal nanoparticles were mainly located in the inner layer of microgels. The catalytic activity of Ag–Pd bimetallic nanoparticles was investigated using the reduction of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol by NaBH4 as model reaction. The data demonstrated that Ag–Pd bimetallic nanoparticles showed enhanced catalytic activity compared to each monometallic nanoparticle alone and their catalytic activity was controllable by temperature due to the volume transition of PNIPA microgels. Thermosensitive microgels with PS core and cross-linked PNIPA shell were synthesized as nano-reactor to prepare Ag–Pd bimetallic nanoparticles.![]()

Abstract
Hexagonal NiO/mesoporous carbon nanodisks (NiO/MCN) are facilely and controllably synthesized via constructing nickel-zinc trimesic acid heterobimetallic metal-organic framework (HMOF) disks before pyrolysis at 910 °C. Tailoring the Ni/(Zn + Ni) feed ratio and the reaction time during the HMOF synthesis creates a well-defined hexagonal carbon nanodisk with properly populated NiO nanocrystals while maintaining high porosity and conductivity. Such an elaborately fabricated NiO/MCN is highly stable, and exhibits the largest specific capacitance of 261 F g-1 and the highest specific activity factor of 1.93 s-1 g-1 of any composite nanodisk during the capacitive test and 4-nitrophenol reduction, respectively.

Abstract
A novel platform for the development of highly efficient magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents has been demonstrated. New contrast agents are designed and produced through electrostatic self-assembly of cationic gadolinium(III) complexes onto anionic spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB). The structurally well-defined SPB are composed of polystyrene core and polyacrylic acid brush layer, where numerous binding sites and confined microenvironments are available for the embedment of the gadolinium(III) contrast agents. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments show excellent biocompatibility and relaxometric performance of these SPB-based gadolinium hybrid materials. The enhanced relaxivity value is up to 86.2 mM-1 s-1 per Gd, a remarkably high record value at 1.5 T magnetic field. In vivo imaging displays a prolonged blood circulation time and massive accumulation of the contrast agents at the tumor region due to the enhanced permeability and retention effect. The SPB-based gadolinium hybrid materials not only broaden the horizons of new MRI contrast agents, but also have a great potential for tumor diagnosis.

Abstract
A more efficient and convenient strategy was demonstrated to immobilize silver nanoparticles (NPs) with a crystalline structure into the spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB) as an antibacterial material. The SPB used for surface coating (Ag immobilized PVK-PAA SPB) consists of a poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) core and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) chain layers which are anchored onto the surface of PVK core at one end. Well-dispersed silver nanoparticles (diameter∼3.5 nm) then formed and were electrostatically confined in the brush layer. Ag content is controlled by a repeated loading process. Thin film coatings were then constructed by layer-by-layer depositions of positive charged poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and SPB. The multilayer composites display excellent stability as well as antibacterial performance but not for simple PVK-PAA coated surface. The results show that almost complete bacteria growth including both dispersed bacterial cells and biofilms was inhibited over a period of 24 h. This approach opens a novel strategy for stable and efficient immobilization of Ag NPs in fabrication of antibacterial materials.

Abstract
AbstractIn this research work, multi-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-methacrylic acid) copolymer microgels were synthesized via emulsion polymerization in aqueous medium. Then, nickel and cobalt nanoparticles were fabricated within these microgels by in situ reduction of metal ions using sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as a reducing agent. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to characterize these microgels. The pH sensitivity of these copolymer microgels was studied using dynamic light scattering technique (DLS). DLS studies revealed that the hydrodynamic radius of these microgels increased with the increase in pH of the medium at 25°C. The catalytic activity of hybrid microgels for the reduction of p-nitrophenol (4-NP) to p-aminophenol (4-AP) was investigated by UV-visible spectrophotometery. The value of apparent rate constant of reaction was found to change linearly with catalyst dosage. The nickel-based hybrid system was found to be five times more efficient as a catalyst compared to the cobalt-based hybrid system for the reduction of 4-NP to 4-AP in aqueous medium.
