Chemistries and materials for atmospheric water harvesting

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) is recognized as a crucial strategy to address the global challenge of water scarcity by tapping into the vast reserves of atmospheric moisture for potable water supply. Within this domain, sorbents lie in the core of AWH technologies as they possess broad adaptability across a wide spectrum of humidity levels, underpinned by the cyclic sorption and desorption processes of sorbents, necessitating a multi-scale viewpoint regarding the rational material and chemical selection and design. This Invited Review delves into the essential sorption mechanisms observed across various classes of sorbent systems, emphasizing the water-sorbent interactions and the progression of water networks. A special focus is placed on the insights derived from isotherm profiles, which elucidate sorbent structures and sorption dynamics. From these foundational principles, we derive material and chemical design guidelines and identify key tuning factors from a structural-functional perspective across multiple material systems, addressing their fundamental chemistries and unique attributes. The review further navigates through system-level design considerations to optimize water production efficiency. This review aims to equip researchers in the field of AWH with a thorough understanding of the water-sorbent interactions, material design principles, and system-level considerations essential for advancing this technology.

Molecular driving forces for water adsorption in MOF-808: A comparative analysis with UiO-66

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with their unique porous structures and versatile functionality, have emerged as promising materials for the adsorption, separation, and storage of diverse molecular species. In this study, we investigate water adsorption in MOF-808, a prototypical MOF that shares the same secondary building unit (SBU) as UiO-66, and elucidate how differences in topology and connectivity between the two MOFs influence the adsorption mechanism. To this end, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to calculate several thermodynamic and dynamical properties of water in MOF-808 as a function of relative humidity (RH), from the initial adsorption step to full pore filling. At low RH, the μ3-OH groups of the SBUs form hydrogen bonds with the initial water molecules entering the pores, which triggers the filling of these pores before the μ3-OH groups in other pores become engaged in hydrogen bonding with water molecules. Our analyses indicate that the pores of MOF-808 become filled by water sequentially as the RH increases. A similar mechanism has been reported for water adsorption in UiO-66. Despite this similarity, our study highlights distinct thermodynamic properties and framework characteristics that influence the adsorption process differently in MOF-808 and UiO-66.

Probing Structural Defects in MOFs Using Water Stability

Defects in the crystal structures of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), whether present intrinsically or introduced via so-called defect engineering, can play strong roles in the properties of MOFs for various applications. Unfortunately, direct experimental detection and characterization of defects in MOFs are very challenging. We show that in many cases, the differences between experimentally observed and computationally predicted water stabilities of MOFs can be used to deduce information on the presence of point defects in real materials. Most computational studies of MOFs consider these materials to be defect-free, and in many cases, the resulting structures are predicted to be hydrophobic. Systematic experimental studies, however, have shown that many MOFs are hydrophilic. We show that the existence of chemically plausible point defects can often account for this discrepancy and use this observation in combination with detailed molecular simulations to assess the impact of local defects and flexibility in a variety of MOFs for which defects had not been considered previously.

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Water Harvesting and Concurrent Carbon Capture: A Review for Hygroscopic Materials

As water scarcity becomes a pending global issue, hygroscopic materials prove a significant solution. Thus, there is a good cause following the structure-performance relationship to review the recent development of hygroscopic materials and provide inspirational insight into creative materials. Herein, traditional hygroscopic materials, crystalline frameworks, polymers, and composite materials are reviewed. The similarity in working conditions of water harvesting and carbon capture makes simultaneously addressing water shortages and reduction of greenhouse effects possible. Concurrent water harvesting and carbon capture is likely to become a future challenge. Therefore, an emphasis is laid on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for their excellent performance in water and CO2 adsorption, and representative role of micro- and mesoporous materials. Herein, the water adsorption mechanisms of MOFs are summarized, followed by a review of MOF's water stability, with a highlight on the emerging machine learning (ML) technique to predict MOF water stability and water uptake. Recent advances in the mechanistic elaboration of moisture's effects on CO2 adsorption are reviewed. This review summarizes recent advances in water-harvesting porous materials with special attention on MOFs and expects to direct researchers' attention into the topic of concurrent water harvesting and carbon capture as a future challenge.

Confined Water Cluster Formation in Water Harvesting by Metal-Organic Frameworks: CAU-10-H versus CAU-10-CH3

Several metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) excel in harvesting water from the air or as heat pumps as they show a steep increase in water uptake at 10-30 % relative humidity (RH%). A precise understanding of which structural characteristics govern such behavior is lacking. Herein, CAU-10-H and CAU-10-CH3 are studied with H, CH3 corresponding to the functions grafted to the organic linker. CAU-10-H shows a steep water uptake ≈18 RH% of interest for water harvesting, yet the subtle replacement of H by CH3 in the organic linker drastically changes the water adsorption behavior to less steep water uptake at much higher humidity values. The materials' structural deformation and water ordering during adsorption with in situ sum-frequency generation, in situ X-ray diffraction, and molecular simulations are unraveled. In CAU-10-H, an energetically favorable water cluster is formed in the hydrophobic pore, tethered via H-bonds to the framework μOH groups, while for CAU-10-CH3, such a favorable cluster cannot form. By relating the findings to the features of water adsorption isotherms of a series of MOFs, it is concluded that favorable water adsorption occurs when sites of intermediate hydrophilicity are present in a hydrophobic structure, and the formation of energetically favorable water clusters is possible.

Ionic Covalent Organic Framework as a Dual Functional Sensor for Temperature and Humidity

Visual sensing of humidity and temperature by solids plays an important role in the everyday life and in industrial processes. Due to their hydrophobic nature, most covalent organic framework (COF) sensors often exhibit poor optical response when exposed to moisture. To overcome this challenge, the optical response is set out to improve, to moisture by incorporating H-bonding ionic functionalities into the COF network. A highly sensitive COF, consisting of guanidinium and diformylpyridine linkers (TG-DFP), capable of detecting changes in temperature and moisture content is fabricated. The hydrophilic nature of the framework enables enhanced water uptake, allowing the trapped water molecules to form a large number of hydrogen bonds. Despite the presence of non-emissive building blocks, the H-bonds restrict internal bond rotation within the COF, leading to reversible fluorescence and solid-state optical hydrochromism in response to relative humidity and temperature.

Synergistic Boosting Capture Ability of Thiophene Sulfur with a Novel Dual-Amino-Functionalized MOF-on-MOF Adsorbent

A single metal-organic framework (MOF) exhibits some drawbacks in deep adsorptive desulfurization such as insufficient functional active sites, water instability, low surface area, etc. Herein, a dual-amino-functionalized (ZIF-8-NH2)-PVP-(Cu-BTC-NH2) core-shell dual MOF adsorbent was first synthesized by the hydrothermal growth method. The adsorption performance of thiophene sulfur (ThS) is systematically investigated and evaluated at mild temperatures through batch tests. The (ZIF-8-NH2)-PVP-(Cu-BTC-NH2) exhibits good adsorption ability toward ThS, which is attributed to the associative effects of dual MOFs with structure features such as hydrogen bond, open metal active sites, suitable pore sizes and π-π conjugation, etc. Meanwhile, the (ZIF-8-NH2)-PVP-(Cu-BTC-NH2) embedded 25 wt % water still remains crystal intact and good adsorption desulfurization performance, which is attributed to the NH2- functional groups. After five recycles, more than 90% ThS uptake onto (ZIF-8-NH2)-PVP-(Cu-BTC-NH2) could be recovered, exhibiting good reuse performance. This study presents a new strategy for grafting MOF-on-MOF with specific functional groups to improve the abilities of desulfurization and water resistance.

Multivariate Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks with Tunable Permanent Porosities for Capture of a Mustard Gas Simulant

Precise synthesis of topologically predictable and discrete molecular crystals with permanent porosities remains a long-term challenge. Here, we report the first successful synthesis of a series of 11 isoreticular multivariate hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (MTV-HOFs) from pyrene-based derivatives bearing -H, -CH3 , -NH2 and -F groups achieved by a shape-fitted, π-π stacking self-assembly strategy. These MTV-HOFs are single-crystalline materials composed of tecton, as verified by single-crystal diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra, Raman spectra, water sorption isotherms and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These MTV-HOFs exhibit tunable hydrophobicity with water uptake starting from 50 to 80 % relative humidity, by adjusting the combinations and ratios of functional groups. As a proof of application, the resulting MTV-HOFs were shown to be capable of capturing a mustard gas simulant, 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) from moisture. The location of different functional groups within the pores of the MTV-HOFs leads to a synergistic effect, which resulted in a superior CEES/H2 O selectivity (up to 94 %) compared to that of the HOFs with only pure component and enhanced breakthrough performance (up to 4000 min/g) when compared to benchmark MOF materials. This work is an important advance in the synthesis of MTV-HOFs, and provides a platform for the development of porous molecular materials for numerous applications.

Efficient removal of organic dyes using electrospun nanofibers with Ce-based UiO-66 MOFs

Cerium-based UiO-66 (Ce-UiO-66) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized via a facile solvothermal method and fully characterized using FTIR, XRD, BET, SEM, EDX, and zeta potential techniques. The synthesized Ce-UiO-66 particles were embedded into an electrospun cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/chitosan (CTS) nanofiber (EPCNF), and then employed to remove organic dyes from water. The adsorption results demonstrated that the adsorption capacities of both anionic (Congo Red (CR), Methyl Orange (MO) and Methyl Red (MR)) and cationic (Methylene Blue (MB)) dyes over the fabricated electrospun nanofibers (ENFs) increased with increasing the loadings of Ce-UiO-66 MOFs. Accordingly, the adsorption performance of EPCNF-10 (containing 10 wt% of Ce-UiO-66 MOFs) adsorbent toward these organic dyes is in the order of CR (102.04 mg/g) > MO (87.71 mg/g) > MR (65.35 mg/g) > MB (34.24 mg/g). Moreover, it was found that the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model were appropriate for describing the adsorption behaviors of EPCNF-10 adsorbent toward both anionic and cationic dyes. Thus, it can be proposed that the fabricated EPCNF-10 adsorbent would be effective adsorbent materials for the removal of anionic and cationic dyes from water due to its excellent adsorption performance, facile preparation, good regeneration, and simple separation from aqueous solutions.

Metal-organic framework template-guided electrochemical lithography on substrates for SERS sensing applications

The templating method holds great promise for fabricating surface nanopatterns. To enhance the manufacturing capabilities of complex surface nanopatterns, it is important to explore new modes of the templates beyond their conventional masking and molding modes. Here, we employed the metal-organic framework (MOF) microparticles assembled monolayer films as templates for metal electrodeposition and revealed a previously unidentified guiding growth mode enabling the precise growth of metallic films exclusively underneath the MOF microparticles. The guiding growth mode was induced by the fast ion transportation within the nanochannels of the MOF templates. The MOF template could be repeatedly used, allowing for the creation of identical metallic surface nanopatterns for multiple times on different substrates. The MOF template-guided electrochemical growth mode provided a robust route towards cost-effective fabrication of complex metallic surface nanopatterns with promising applications in metamaterials, plasmonics, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing fields.

Design Principles for Using Amphiphilic Polymers To Create Microporous Water

Aqueous dispersions of microporous nanocrystals with dry, gas-accessible pores─referred to as "microporous water"─enable high densities of gas molecules to be transported through water. For many applications of microporous water, generalizable strategies are required to functionalize the external surface of microporous particles to control their dispersibility, stability, and interactions with other solution-phase components─including catalysts, proteins, and cells─while retaining as much of their internal pore volume as possible. Here, we establish design principles for the noncovalent surface functionalization of hydrophobic metal-organic frameworks with amphiphilic polymers that render the particles dispersible in water and enhance their hydrolytic stability. Specifically, we show that block co-polymers with persistence lengths that exceed the micropore aperture size of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) can dramatically enhance ZIF particle dispersibility and stability while preserving porosity and >80% of the theoretical O2 carrying capacity. Moreover, enhancements in hydrolytic stability are greatest when the polymer can form strong bonds to exposed metal sites on the external particle surface. More broadly, our insights provide guidelines for controlling the interface between polymers and metal-organic framework particles in aqueous environments to augment the properties of microporous water.

Facile fabrication of Eu-based metal-organic frameworks for highly efficient capture of tetracycline hydrochloride from aqueous solutions

The tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) removal from wastewater is important for the environment and human health yet challenging. Herein, the Eu-based MOF, Eu(BTC) (BTC represents 1,3,5-trimesic acid) was prepared by an efficient and environmental-friendly strategy, and then was used for the TCH capture for the first time. The Eu(BTC) was characterized by different methods such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The TCH uptake of Eu(BTC) was investigated systematically. The influences of experiment conditions such as solution pH value, adsorption time and initial concentration on TCH capacity of Eu(BTC) were also studied. The Eu(BTC) obtained exhibited remarkable TCH uptake (q_m was up to 397.65 mg/g), which was much higher than those of most materials such as UiO-66/PDA/BC (184.30 mg/g), PDA-NFsM (161.30 mg/g) and many carbon-based materials reported till now. Besides, the TCH adsorption behavior on Eu(BTC) was explored by Freundlich and Langmuir equations, and the adsorption mechanism was further analyzed. The experimental results suggested that the TCH adsorption mechanism of Eu(BTC) included the π-π interaction, electrostatic interaction and coordinate bonds. The excellent TCH adsorption performance and the efficient fabrication strategy make the Eu(BTC) prepared promising in TCH removal.

From polyethylene waste bottles to UIO-66 (Zr) for preconcentration of steroid hormones from river water

Metal-organic framework (UiO-66 (Zr) was synthesized using polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and used as an adsorbent for extraction and preconcentration of steroid hormones in river water. Polyethylene waste bottles were used as the source of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) ligands. The UIO-66(Zr), which the PET was made from recycled waste plastics, was used for the first time for the extraction and preconcentration of four different types of steroid hormones in river water samples. Various analytical characterization techniques were employed to characterize the synthesized material. The steroid hormones were detected and quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). The results were further validated using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). Experimental variables, such as sample pH, the mass of adsorbent and extraction time, were optimized using Box-Behnken design (BBD). The dispersive solid phase extraction method combined with HPLC-DAD, displayed good linearity (0.004-1000 µg/L) low limits of detections (LODs, 1.1-16 ng/L for ultrapure water and 2.6-5.3 ng/L for river water) and limits of quantification (LOQs, 3.7-5.3 ng/L for ultrapure water and 8.7-11.0 ng/L for river water samples) and acceptable extraction recoveries (86-101%). The intraday (n = 10) and interday (n = 5) precisions expressed in terms of relative standard deviations (%RSD) were all less than 5%. The steroid hormones were detected in most of the river water samples (Vaal River and Rietspruit River). The DSPE/HPLC method offered a promising approach for simultaneous extraction, preconcentration and determination of steroid hormones in water.

Surprising Use of the Business Innovation Bass Diffusion Model To Accurately Describe Adsorption Isotherm Types I, III, and V

Using adsorption isotherm data to determine heats of adsorption or predict mixture adsorption using the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) relies on accurate fits of the data with continuous, mathematical models. Here, we derive an empirical two-parameter model to fit isotherm data of IUPAC types I, III, and V in a descriptive way based on the Bass model for innovation diffusion. We report 31 isotherm fits to existing literature data covering all six types of isotherms, various adsorbents, such as carbons, zeolites, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as well as different adsorbing gases (water, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen). We find several cases, especially for flexible MOFs, where previously reported isotherm models reached their limits and either failed to fit the data or could not sufficiently be fitted due to stepped type V isotherms. Moreover, in two instances, models specifically developed for distinct systems are fitted with a higher R² value compared to the models in the original reports. Using these fits, it is demonstrated how the new Bingel-Walton isotherm can be used to qualitatively assess the hydrophilic or hydrophobic behavior of porous materials from the relative magnitude of the two fitting parameters. The model can also be employed to find matching heats of adsorption values for systems with isotherm steps using one, continuous fit instead of partial, stepwise fits or interpolation. Additionally, using our single, continuous fit to model stepped isotherms in IAST mixture adsorption predictions leads to good agreement with the results from the osmotic framework adsorbed solution theory that was specifically developed for these systems using a stepwise, approximate fitting, which is yet far more complex. Our new isotherm equation accomplishes all of these tasks with only two fitted parameters, providing a simple, accurate method for modeling a variety of adsorption behavior.

Highly Robust Microporous Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Ethylene Purification under Dry and Humid Conditions

Two C₂ H₆ -selective metal-organic framework (MOF) adsorbents with ultrahigh stability, high surface areas, and suitable pore size have been designed and synthesized for one-step separation of ethane/ethylene (C₂ H₆ /C₂ H₄ ) under humid conditions to produce polymer-grade pure C₂ H₄ . Experimental results reveal that these two MOFs not only adsorb a high amount of C₂ H₆ but also display good C₂ H₆ /C₂ H₄ selectivity verified by fixed bed column breakthrough experiments. Most importantly, the good water stability and hydrophobic pore environments make these two MOFs capable of efficiently separating C₂ H₆ /C₂ H₄ under humid conditions, exhibiting the benchmark performance among all reported adsorbents for separation of C₂ H₆ /C₂ H₄ under humid conditions. Moreover, the affinity sites and their static adsorption energies were successfully revealed by single crystal data and computation studies. Adsorbents described in this work can be used to address major chemical industrial challenges.

Efficient discovery of potent α-glucosidase inhibitors from Paeoniae lactiflora using enzyme-MOF nanocomposites and competitive indicators

A great deal of attention has been paid to the seeds of Paeoniae lactiflora pall., an underutilized food resource, since its extract exhibits excellent α-glucosidase (GAA) inhibitory activity. In the present study, to gain further insight into this plant and find out potent GAA inhibitors, we established a novel ligand fishing strategy by introducing a competitive inhibitor as an indicator. After the successful establishment of this approach was verified by a series of methods, including kinetic assay, fluorescence determination, and HPLC, the newly developed ligand fishing method was applied to acquire potent GAA inhibitors from P. lactiflora seeds. Nine bioactive compounds were captured, and seven of them were identified as suffruticosol A, suffruticosol B, resveratrol, vitisin E, luteolin, trans-δ-viniferin, and ampelopsin E. The data of their GAA inhibitory activity demonstrated that these constituents were vigorously active against GAA with IC₅₀ values of 1.67-30.47 μM, while such value of 1-DNJ was 228.77 μM. Among them, vitisin E and ampelopsin E were reported to show such inhibitory activity for the first time. Collectively, our findings provide valuable clues for the further utilization of P. lactiflora seeds as a functional food, and offer a new avenue for acquiring potent inhibitors from natural resources.

Robust DUT-67 material for highly efficient removal of the Cr(VI) ion from an aqueous solution

Robust DUT-67 was synthesized by the hydrothermal method and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). To systematically study the removal of Cr(VI) ion by DUT-67, single-factor, competition ion, material regeneration, kinetic, and thermodynamic experiments were designed. The experimental results show that DUT-67 had a maximum removal rate of 96.1% and a maximum adsorption capacity of 105.42 mg g^-1 with material regeneration and outstanding selective adsorption. In addition, the process of removal of the Cr(VI) ion from an aqueous solution by DUT-67, which accorded with the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir model, was studied, and its adsorption mechanism was reasonably explained by the theoretical calculation.

Solid Phase Extraction of (+)-Catechin from Cocoa Shell Waste Using Dual Ionic Liquid@ZIF8 Covered Silica

(+)-catechin is one category of flavonoids in cocoa shell waste and it has been reported to have many health benefits. In order to isolate it from aqueous extracted solution of cocoa shell waste by solid phase extraction (SPE), a series of dual ionic liquids@ZIF8-covered silica were prepared as the sorbents. Regarding the operation conditions of SPE and the characteristic structure of (+)-catechin, ZIF8-covered silica was synthesized to establish a stable and porous substrate, and various dual ionic liquids with multiple properties were immobilized on substrate to obtain a high adsorption capacity. Different adsorption conditions were investigated and the highest adsorption capacity (58.0 mg/g) was obtained on Sil@ZIF8@EIM-EIM at 30 °C during 60.0 min. When the sorbent was applied in the SPE process, 96.0% of the total amount of (+)-catechin from cocoa shell waste can be isolated after several washing and elution steps. The satisfactory recoveries of 97.5–100.2% and RSDs of 1.3–3.2% revealed that the SPE process was accurate and precise. The stability of Sil@ZIF8@EIM-EIM was tested in water and the reusability was tested using repeated adsorption/desorption process. The results revealed that Sil@ZIF8@EIM-EIM as an efficient sorbent can isolate (+)-catechin from cocoa shell waste.

Adsorption and Degradation of Volatile Organic Compounds by Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs): A Review

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a major threat to human life and health. The technologies currently used to remove VOCs mainly include adsorption and photocatalysis. Adsorption is the most straightforward strategy, but it cannot ultimately eliminate VOCs. Due to the limited binding surface, the formaldehyde adsorption on conventional photocatalysts is limited, and the photocatalytic degradation efficiency is not high enough. By developing novel metal-organic framework (MOF) materials that can catalytically degrade VOCs at room temperature, the organic combination of new MOF materials and traditional purification equipment can be achieved to optimize adsorption and degradation performance. In the present review, based on the research on the adsorption and removal of VOCs by MOF materials in the past 10 years, starting from the structure and characteristics of MOFs, the classification of which was described in detail, the influencing factors and mechanisms in the process of adsorption and removal of VOCs were summarized. In addition, the research progress of MOF materials was summarized, and its future development in this field was prospected.

Functionalized UiO-66-NH2 by trimellitic acid for highly selective adsorption of basic blue 3 from aqueous solutions

A novel metal-organic framework (MOF) UiO-66-TLA (UiO-66-Trimellitic Acid) was synthesized by one-pot method with trimellitic acid as modifier, which can effectively remove the basic dye Basic Blue 3 (BB3) in wastewater. Modification with carboxyl groups facilitates the adsorption of the cationic dye Basic Blue 3. The adsorption of BB3 by the modified UiO-66-TLA was significantly greater than that of its parent MOF. The adsorption capacity of the modified UiO-66-TLA for BB3 (234.23 mg g⁻¹) was 93.2% higher than that of the original UiO-66-NH₂ (121.24 mg g⁻¹), this is closely related to the electrostatic interaction of -COOH in trimellitic acid. UiO-66-TLA was successfully synthesized as indicated by various characterization results. The adsorption kinetics conformed to the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption isotherm conformed to the Redlich-Peterson isotherm. This indicates that BB3 is a multi-parameter model of monolayer/multilayer arrangement on the adsorbent surface, and its rate-controlling step is chemisorption. The adsorption process was non-spontaneous and belonged to an endothermic reaction, in addition, it has great adsorption stability and regeneration The interaction of the modified UiO-66-TLA with BB3 was mainly affected by mechanisms, such as electrostatic interaction, π–π stacking as well as the abundant functional groups on UiO-66-TLA surface. These results demonstrate that UiO-66-TLA is an efficient, regenerable, water-stable material for the removal of BB3 in solution, with practical implications, suggesting its potential as a dye adsorbent.

CO2 Capture from High-Humidity Flue Gas Using a Stable Metal–Organic Framework

The flue gas from fossil fuel power plants is a long-term stable and concentrated emission source of CO2, and it is imperative to reduce its emission. Adsorbents have played a pivotal role in reducing CO2 emissions in recent years, but the presence of water vapor in flue gas poses a challenge to the stability of adsorbents. In this study, ZIF-94, one of the ZIF adsorbents, showed good CO2 uptake (53.30 cm3/g), and the calculated CO2/N2 (15:85, v/v) selectivity was 54.12 at 298 K. Because of its excellent structural and performance stability under humid conditions, the CO2/N2 mixture was still well-separated on ZIF-94 with a separation time of 30.4 min when the relative humidity was as high as 99.2%, which was similar to the separation time of the dry gas experiments (33.2 min). These results pointed to the enormous potential applications of ZIF-94 for CO2/N2 separation under high humidity conditions in industrial settings.

Enhancement of critical-sized bone defect regeneration using UiO-66 nanomaterial in rabbit femurs

Background

Repair of large-sized bone defects is a challengeable obstacle in orthopedics and evoked the demand for the development of biomaterials that could induce bone repair in such defects. Recently, UiO-66 has emerged as an attractive metal–organic framework (MOF) nanostructure that is incorporated in biomedical applications due to its biocompatibility, porosity, and stability. In addition, its osteogenic properties have earned a great interest as a promising field of research. Thus, the UiO-66 was prepared in this study and assessed for its potential to stimulate and support osteogenesis in vitro and in vivo in a rabbit femoral condyle defect model. The nanomaterial was fabricated and characterized using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Afterward, in vitro cytotoxicity and hemolysis assays were performed to investigate UiO-66 biocompatibility. Furthermore, the material in vitro capability to upregulate osteoblast marker genes was assessed using qPCR. Next, the in vivo new bone formation potential of the UiO-66 nanomaterial was evaluated after induction of bone defects in rabbit femoral condyles. These defects were left empty or filled with UiO-66 nanomaterial and monitored at weeks 4, 8, and 12 after bone defect induction using x-ray, computed tomography (CT), histological examinations, and qPCR analysis of osteocalcin (OC) and osteopontin (OP) expressions.

Results

The designed UiO-66 nanomaterial showed excellent cytocompatibility and hemocompatibility and stimulated the in vitro osteoblast functions. The in vivo osteogenesis was enhanced in the UiO-66 treated group compared to the control group, whereas evidence of healing of the treated bone defects was observed grossly and histologically. Interestingly, UiO-66 implanted defects displayed a significant osteoid tissue and collagen deposition compared to control defects. Moreover, the UiO-66 nanomaterial demonstrated the potential to upregulate OC and OP in vivo.

Conclusions

The UiO-66 nanomaterial implantation possesses a stimulatory impact on the healing process of critical-sized bone defects indicating that UiO-66 is a promising biomaterial for application in bone tissue engineering.

New Insight into Sorption Cycling Stability of Three Al-Based MOF Materials in Water Vapour

Three porous aluminium benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylates MIL-96(Al), MIL-100(Al) and MIL-110(Al) materials were studied for their hydrothermal stability. The 40-cycles water vapour sorption experiments for the three samples were performed by varying the temperature between 40 and 140 °C at 75% relative humidity to simulate working conditions for materials used in water sorption-based low-T heat storage and reallocation applications. The materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, N₂ physisorption, and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Infrared spectroscopies before and after the cycling tests. The results showed that the structure of MIL-110(Al) lost its crystallinity and porosity under the tested conditions, while MIL-96(Al) and MIL-100(Al) exhibited excellent hydrothermal stability. The selection of structures, which comprise the same type of metal and ligand, enabled us to attribute the differences in stability primarily to the known variances in secondary building units and the shielding of potential water coordination sites due to the differences in pore accessibility for water molecules. Additionally, our results revealed that water adsorption and desorption at tested conditions (T, RH) is very slow for all three materials, being most pronounced for the MIL-100(Al) structure.

Negatively Charged MOF-Based Composite Anion Exchange Membrane with High Cation Selectivity and Permeability

Every metal and metallurgical industry is associated with the generation of wastewater, influencing the living and non-living environment, which is alarming to environmentalists. The strict regulations about the dismissal of acid and metal into the environment and the increasing emphasis on the recycling/reuse of these effluents after proper remedy have focused the research community's curiosity in developing distinctive approaches for the recovery of acid and metals from industrial wastewaters. This study reports the synthesis of UiO-66-(COOH)₂ using dual ligand in water as a green solvent. Then, the prepared MOF nanoparticles were introduced into the DMAM quaternized QPPO matrix through a straightforward blending approach. Four defect-free UiO-66-(COOH)₂/QPPO MMMs were prepared with four different MOF structures. The BET characterization of UiO-66-(COOH)₂ nanoparticles with a highly crystalline structure and sub-nanometer pore size (~7 Å) was confirmed by XRD. Because of the introduction of MOF nanoparticles with an electrostatic interaction and pore size screening effect, a separation coefficient (S_HCl/FeCl2) of 565 and U_HCl of 0.0089 m·h^-1 for U-C(60)/QPPO were perceived when the loading dosage of the MOF content was 10 wt%. The obtained results showed that the prepared defect-free MOF membrane has broad prospects in acid recovery applications.

Effect of Loading on the Water Stability of the Metal-Organic Framework DMOF-1 [Zn(bdc)(dabco)0.5]

In this work, the degradation of the metal-organic framework (MOF) DMOF-1 as a function of water adsorption was investigated. As the quantity of water vapor adsorbed by DMOF-1 increases, degradation of the MOF from hydrolysis accelerates. Degradation was attributed to clustering of water molecules in the void space of DMOF-1, as seen in NVT Monte Carlo simulations. Our molecular simulations strongly suggest that degradation of DMOF-1 by water is driven by water adsorption at defect sites in the MOF. Interestingly, it was observed that DMOF-1 can remain stable if it adsorbs less water than the 1 mmol/g necessary to initiate degradation within the framework. Even though the rate of hydrolysis increases at higher temperatures, the degradation threshold for DMOF-1 remains 1 mmol/g regardless of temperature. This suggests that at sufficiently elevated temperatures (above ∼50 °C) DMOF-1 is stable toward water vapor at all relative humidities.

Preparation of Highly Stable DUT-52 Materials and Adsorption of Dichromate Ions in Aqueous Solution

Highly stable DUT-52 materials were synthesized by the hydrothermal method and well-characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In order to systematically study the adsorption of dichromate ions in aqueous solution by the DUT-52 materials, a single factor experiment, kinetic experiment, thermodynamic experiment, competition ion experiment, and material regeneration experiment were designed. Based on the H-bond interaction between the dichromate ions and the H atoms of a NDC^2- ligand, the DUT-52 materials showed a maximum removal rate of 96.4% and a maximum adsorption capacity of 120.68 mg·g^-1 with excellent selective adsorption and material regeneration. In addition, the process of adsorption of dichromate ions by the DUT-52 materials is in accordance with the pseudo second-order kinetics and Langmuir models, and the adsorption mechanism and the important role of the H-bond interaction were reasonably explained using the XPS pattern and theoretical calculation. Accordingly, DUT-52 can be regarded as a multifunctional material for efficiently removing dichromate ions from the wastewater.

State of the art on the ultrasonic-assisted removal of environmental pollutants using metal-organic frameworks

The environmental and health issues of drinking water and effluents released into nature are among the major area of contention in the past few decades. With the growth of ultrasound-based approaches in water and wastewater treatment, promising materials have also been considered to employ their advantages. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are among the porous materials that have received great attention from researchers in recent years. Features such as high porosity, large specific surface area, electronic properties like semi-conductivity, and the capacity to coordinate with the organic matter have resulted in a substantial increase in scientific researches. This work deals with a comprehensive review of the application of MOFs for ultrasonic-assisted pollutant removal from wastewater. In this regard, after considering features and synthesis methods of MOFs, the mechanisms of several ultrasound-based approaches including sonocatalysis, sonophotocatalysis, and sono-adsorption are well assessed for removal of different organic compounds by MOFs. These methods are compared with some other water treatment processes with the application of MOFs in the absence of ultrasound. Also, the main concern about MOFs including environmental hazards and water stability is fully discussed and some techniques are proposed to reduce hazardous effects of MOFs and improve stability in humid/aqueous environments. Economic aspects for the preparation of MOFs are evaluated and cost estimates for ultrasonic-assisted AOP approaches were provided. Finally, the future outlooks and the new frontiers of ultrasonic-assisted methods with the help of MOFs in global environmental pollutant removal are presented.

Organic microporous crystals driven by pure C-H⋯π interactions with vapor-induced crystal-to-crystal transformations

Organic porous crystals constructed by only a single kind of weak molecular interaction are invaluable to understanding the nature of the formation of organic porous materials and developing new types of porous materials. Here, we designed and synthesized two pure organic compounds of PBO and PBS through integrating planar dibenzothiophene/dibenzofuran and two phenothiazine groups together with twisted C-N bonds, which form organic microporous crystals with very good stability against strong acids and bases VIA pure C-H⋯π interactions. Accordingly, the effective absorption of toluene has been successfully realized with an adsorbing capacity of 6.20 mmol g^-1, regardless of the interference of water vapor. Excitingly, these microporous materials exhibit interesting crystal-to-crystal transformation (CCT) properties accompanied by changed pore size on being exposed to different organic vapors. Therefore, the desorption process of toluene could be completed through a simple exposure to dichloromethane (DCM) vapor and the second transformation of the crystal occurred in this process.

Facile immobilization of ethylenediamine tetramethylene-phosphonic acid into UiO-66 for toxic divalent heavy metal ions removal: An experimental and theoretical exploration

By the facile immobilization of ethylenediamine tetramethylene-phosphonic acid (EDTMPA) onto the surface and into the defects of UiO-66, a stable and efficient adsorbent named UiO-66-EDTMPA was obtained for the first time. In terms of removing aqueous heavy metal ions (Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺), the maximum adsorption capacities of UiO-66-EDTMPA reached 558.67, 271.34 and 210.89 mg/g, which were 8.77 (Pb²⁺), 5.63 (Cd²⁺) and 5.19 (Cu²⁺) times higher than raw UiO-66 respectively. The adsorption behavior of three heavy metal ions on UiO-66 and UiO-66-EDTMPA were investigated and compared through batch control experiments and theoretical studies. The main factors on adsorption progress (i.e., the dosage of EDTMPA, pH, ionic strength, co-existing ions, initial concentration, contact time, temperature) were explored, and the critical characterization (i.e., SEM, TEM, XRD, FT-IR, TG-DTG, XPS, N₂ adsorption-desorption test) were performed. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation (radial distribution functions (RDF) and mean square displacement (MSD)) were also applied to reveal the adsorption behavior. Besides, two new quantum chemical analyses (Hirshfeld surface and independent gradient model (IGM)) were introduced into the interaction analysis between UiO-66 and EDTMPA. The complete results showed that (1) where the hydrogen bond and (vdW) connect EDTMPA to UiO-66. (2) The coordination between O, N atoms of EDTMPA and heavy metal ions (Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺) resulted in spontaneous adsorption. (3) The adsorption behavior agreed with Langmuir and pseudo-second-order model, endothermic reaction. In addition, the desorption and reusability study showed promising stable and sustainable performance. This work has some guiding significance for the experimental and theoretical study of removing heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions by MOF or modified MOF materials.

Ligand isomerism fine-tunes structure and stability in zinc complexes of fused pyrazolopyridines

Fused-ring pyrazoles offer a versatile platform for derivitization to give finely tuned and functional ligands in coordination assemblies. Here, we explore the pyrazolo[4,3-b]pyridine (HL1) and pyrazolo[3,4-c]pyridine (HL2) backbones and their N-substituted derivatives, using their coordination chemistry with zinc(II) in the solid state and in solution to examine the steric and electronic effects of varying their substitution pattern. The parent heterocycles HL1 and HL2 both generate robust and permanently porous isomeric MOFs on reaction with zinc and a dicarboxylate co-ligand. The subtle geometric change offered by the position of the backbone pyridyl nitrogen atom leads to substantial changes in the pore size and total pore volume, which is reflected in both their surface areas and CO₂ uptake performance. Both materials are also unusually resilient to atmospheric water vapour by virtue of the strong metal-azolate bonding. The isomeric chelating ligands L3-L6, generated by N-arylation of the parent heterocycles with a 2-pyridyl group, each coordinate to zinc to give either mononuclear or polymeric coordination compounds depending on the involvement of the backbone pyridine nitrogen atom. While crystal packing influences based on the steric preferences of the ligands are dominant in the crystalline phase, fluorescence spectroscopy is used to show that the 2H isomers L4 and L6 show distinct coordination behaviour to the 1H isomers L3 and L5, forming competing [ML] and [ML₂] species in soution. The first stability constant for L6 with zinc(II) is an order of magnitude larger than for the other three ligands, suggesting an improved binding strength based on the electron configuration in this isomer. These results show that careful control of remote substitution on fused pyrazole ligands can lead to substantial improvements in the stability of the resulting complexes, with consequences for the design of stable coordination assemblies containining labile metal ions.

Investigation of H2S Solubility in Aqueous N- Methyldiethanolamine + Amine Functionalized UiO-66 as a nano solvent

In this paper, the experimental solubility of hydrogen sulfide in aqueous N- Methyldiethanolamine + Amine Functionalized UiO-66 (UiO-66-NH2) was studied. UiO-66-NH2 was produced using solvothermal process, and its physicochemical properties were investigated by different techniques including XRD, TGA, TEM, BET, and FTIR to realize its crystalline structure, morphology, thermal stability, and porous structure. The Zeta potential of the solution was turned out to be about 26.6 mV (millivolt), meaning that UiO-66-NH2 particles are moderately stable in aqueous 40 wt.% MDEA. The solubility of hydrogen sulfide has been carried out using the isochoric saturation / or static method in two concentration grades of 0.1 and 0.5 wt.% of UiO-66-NH2 in the aqueous solution of 40 wt.% MDEA known as nanofluid. Experimental measurements were carried out at temperatures of 303.15 through 333.15 K, and pressures up 1100 kPa. Results showed that the addition of UiO-66-NH2 nanoparticles to the MDEA solution altered the results less than 3% , while the mean value of uncertainty reported in this work is about 4% , meaning that the addition of nanoparticles do not have remarkable effect on H2S solubility. In contrast, it causes an increased capacity of CO2 absorption of that solution up to 10% .
