Abstract
The realization of high stiffness, high extensibility, and multi-functions for polylactic acid (PLA) is a vital issue for its practical applications. Herein, hydroxyalkylated tannin acid (mTA), a phenolic compound-based modifier with plentiful flat aromatic structures and flexible isopropanol oligomers, is designed and fabricated to act as the multifunctional modifier for PLA. The mTA exhibits the capability of emitting fluorescence and blocking UV light due to the combination of flat aromatic structures and plentiful flexible chains. Besides, mTA with high grafting degree (h-mTA) shows an excellent compatibility to PLA due to the hydrogen bonding interface and the high affinity of grafted isopropanol oligomers to PLA. As a result, the as-prepared PLA/h-mTA20 composite exhibits a strikingly improved extensibility by 61.2 times while maintaining the high yield strength of PLA. Moreover, PLA/h-mTA can serve as a fluorescent material with multi-mode responsiveness as well as a UV-shielding material with high transparency. We envision that this work opens a novel yet facile way to prepare a strong, tough, and multifunctional PLA material with expanded application scopes and will promote the practical applications of phenolic compounds in polymers.

The Effect of Molecular Weight on the Solubility Properties of Biocompatible Poly(ethylene succinate) Polyester. Polymers (Basel) 2021; 13:2725. Abstract
Poly(ethylene succinate) (PES) is one of the most promising biodegradable and biocompatible polyesters and is widely used in different biomedical applications. However, little information is available on its solubility and precipitation properties, despite that these solution behavior properties affect its applicability. In order to systematically study these effects, biodegradable and biocompatible poly(ethylene succinate) (PES) was synthesized using ethylene glycol and succinic acid monomers with an equimolar ratio. Despite the optimized reaction temperature (T = 185 °C) of the direct condensation polymerization, relatively low molecular mass values were achieved without using a catalyst, and the Mn was adjustable with the reaction time (40-100 min) in the range of ~850 and ~1300 Da. The obtained crude products were purified by precipitation from THF ("good" solvent) with excess of methanol ("bad" solvent). The solvents for PES oligomers purification were chosen according to the calculated values of solubility parameters by different approaches (Fedors, Hoy and Hoftyzer-van Krevelen). The theta-solvent composition of the PES solution was 0.3 v/v% water and 0.7 v/v% DMSO in this binary mixture. These measurements were also allowed to determine important parameters such as the coefficients A (=0.67) and B (=3.69 × 104) from the Schulz equation, or the Kη (=8.22 × 10-2) and α (=0.52) constants from the Kuhn-Mark-Houwink equation. Hopefully, the prepared PES with different molecular weights is a promising candidate for biomedical applications and the reported data and constants are useful for other researchers who work with this promising polyester.

Abstract
AIMS Biochemical hydrolysis and chemical catalysis are involved in the successful biodegradation of polymers. In order to evaluate the potential separation between biochemical and chemical catalysis during the biodegradation process, we report the use of two diphenylpolyenes (DPPs), all trans-1,4-diphenylbutadiene (DPB) and all trans-1,6-diphenylhexatriene (DPH), as potential acid-sensitive indicators in polymers. METHODS AND RESULTS 1,4-Diphenylbutadiene and DPH (0.1% w/w) were melt-cast successfully with poly(ethylene succinate) hexamethylene (PES-HM) polyurethane (thermoset polyester polyurethane) coatings above 80℃. When these two DPP/PES-HM coatings were exposed to a concentrated supernatant with significant esterase activity resulting from the growth of a recently isolated and identified strain of Tremellomycetes yeast (Naganishia albida 5307AI), the DPB coatings exhibited a measurable and reproducible localized decrease in the blue fluorescence emission in regions below where hydrolytic biodegradation was initiated in contrast with DPH blended coatings. The fluorescence changes observed in the biodegraded DPB coating were similar to exposing them to concentrated acids and not bases. CONCLUSIONS Our experiments resulted in (1) a method to blend DPP additives into thermoset coatings, (2) the first report of the biodegradation of polyester polyurethane coating by N. albida, and (3) demonstration that hydrolytic supernatants from this strain generate acidic region within degrading polyester coatings using DPB as the indicator. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Our experiments confirm that N. albida is an active polyester degrader and that DPB is a promising acid sensitive polymer coating additive.

Abstract
In recent years, many studies have reported the harmful effects of plastic debris both on the environment and on human health. Therefore, the attempt has increased for the replacement of conventional plastics with bioplastics. On the other hand, not only the studies on the effects of bioplastics and conventional plastics in the field of micro-, submicron- and nano-sized are still very limited, but also knowledge of their relationship with clinically important bacteria. In this study, the effect of two end products made from bioplastics and their equivalent end products from conventional plastics were evaluated using clinically important gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. To evaluate the effect of the submicron-sized bioplastics and conventional plastics on the bacteria, their viability and activation and/or inhibition mechanism were performed towards the main biochemical (protein, carbohydrate, lipid and antioxidant) and physicochemical (particle size, zeta potential, chemical composition, and surface chemistry) phenomenon. This work highlights the similarities and discrepancies between bio-based and conventional submicron-sized plastics in relation to bacteria.

Abstract
Micron/submicron-sized plastic debris in the environment is a global issue of increasing concern and may harm human health. A large number of studies have shown that plastic debris has various toxicological effects on different organisms. Thus, efforts have increased to replace conventional plastics with bioplastics. However, investigations on the relation of submicron-sized bioplastics- and conventional plastics to culture-dependent biofilm formation and their similarities and discrepancies are still very limited. For this purpose, two end products made from bioplastics and their equivalent end products from conventional plastics were used to examine the response of the biofilm formation of selected clinically important bacteria. To evaluate the similarities and differences of submicron-sized bioplastics and conventional plastics on biofilm formation, the physicochemistry (particle size, zeta potential, chemical composition, and surface chemistry) of the tested plastics was examined, as well as the characteristics of the biofilms (categorization, protein/carbohydrate).

Abstract
Poly (lactic acid) or polylactide (PLA) is a commercial biobased, biodegradable, biocompatible, compostable and non-toxic polymer that has competitive material and processing costs and desirable mechanical properties. Thereby, it can be considered favorably for biomedical applications and as the most promising substitute for petroleum-based polymers in a wide range of commodity and engineering applications. However, PLA has some significant shortcomings such as low melt strength, slow crystallization rate, poor processability, high brittleness, low toughness, and low service temperature, which limit its applications. To overcome these limitations, blending PLA with other polymers is an inexpensive approach that could also tailor the final properties of PLA-based products. During the last two decades, researchers investigated the synthesis, processing, properties, and development of various PLA-based blend systems including miscible blends of poly l-lactide (PLLA) and poly d-lactide (PDLA), which generate stereocomplex crystals, binary immiscible/miscible blends of PLA with other thermoplastics, multifunctional ternary blends using a third polymer or fillers such as nanoparticles, as well as PLA-based blend foam systems. This article reviews all these investigations and compares the syntheses/processing-morphology-properties interrelationships in PLA-based blends developed so far for various applications.

Abstract
Enhancing the performance of wood adhesive is important for its industrial applications. Accordingly, we designed and demonstrated the use of two co-monomers vinyl acetate (VAc) and butyl acrylate (BA) for promoting the graft copolymerization while improving the bonding performance of wood adhesive. The results showed that the addition of co-monomers in the ratio of VAc/BA 6:4 (v/v, volume basis of VAc) could improve the shear strength to 6.68MPa and 3.32MPa in dry and wet states, respectively. 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis revealed successful graft copolymerization reaction while the morphologies were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, the grafting reaction and thermal stabilities of wood adhesive were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that the properties of wood adhesive could improve dramatically by using two co-monomers VAc and BA during the graft copolymerization reaction.

Abstract
Polylactide (PLA) and its copolymers are hydrophobic polyesters used for biomedical applications. Hydrogel medicinal implants have been used as drug delivery vehicles and scaffolds for tissue engineering, tissue augmentation and more. Since lactides are non-functional, they are copolymerized with hydrophilic monomers or conjugated to a hydrophilic moiety to form hydrogels. Copolymers of lactic and glycolic acids with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) provide thermo-responsive hydrogels. Physical crosslinking mechanisms of PEG-PLA or PLA-polysaccharides include: lactic acid segment hydrophobic interactions, stereocomplexation of D and L-lactic acid segments, ionic interactions, and chemical bond formation by radical or photo crosslinking. These hydrogels may also be tailored as stimulus responsive (pH, photo, or redox). PLA and its copolymers have also been polymerized to include urethane bonds to fabricate shape memory hydrogels. This review focuses on the synthesis, characterization, and applications of PLA containing hydrogels.

Abstract
Due to our increasing concerns on environmental problems and limited fossil resources, biobased production of chemicals and materials through biorefinery has been attracting much attention. Optimization of the metabolic performance of microorganisms, the key biocatalysts for the efficient production of the desired target bioproducts, has been achieved by metabolic engineering. Metabolic engineering allowed more efficient production of polyhydroxyalkanoates, a family of microbial polyesters. More recently, non-natural polyesters containing lactate as a monomer have also been produced by one-step fermentation of engineered bacteria. Systems metabolic engineering integrating traditional metabolic engineering with systems biology, synthetic biology, protein/enzyme engineering through directed evolution and structural design, and evolutionary engineering, enabled microorganisms to efficiently produce natural and non-natural products. Here, we review the strategies for the metabolic engineering of microorganisms for the in vivo biosynthesis of lactate-containing polyesters and for the optimization of whole cell metabolism to efficiently produce lactate-containing polyesters. Also, major problems to be solved to further enhance the production of lactate-containing polyesters are discussed.

Abstract
High molecular weight poly (lactic acid) (PLA) was obtained by chain extending with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). The influences of the amount of chain extender, reaction time, and molecular weight changes of prepolymers on the poly(lactic acid) were investigated. PLA prepolymer with a viscosity, average molecular weight (Mη) of 2 × 104 g/mol was synthesized froml-lactide using stannous octoate as the catalyst. After 20 min of chain extension at 175°C, the resulting polymer hadMwof 20.3 × 104 g/mol andMnof 10.5 × 104 g/mol. Both FT-IR and1H-NMR verified that the structure of PLA did not change either before chain extending or after. The optically active characterized that the chain extending-product was left handed. DSC and XRD results showed that both theTgand the crystallinity of PLA were lowered by chain-extension reaction. The crystalline transformation happened in PLA after chain extending, crystallineα′form toαform.
