Investigating the impact of n-heptane (C7H16) and nanoparticles (TiO2) on diesel-microalgae biodiesel blend in CI diesel engines

Recent global challenges encompass profound environmental pollution and the depletion of finite fuel resources. In this study, the biodiesel used in the mixture was derived from Azolla pinnata microalgae oil through a trans-esterification reaction chosen for its high oil concentration. During the initial phase of the experiment, varying volumes of biodiesel (5%, 10%, and 15%) and n-heptane (5%, 10%, and 15%) were introduced to diesel to form a ternary fuel blend. The experimental outcome shows that an n-heptane and biodiesel mixture of 10% by volume would produce the best results. Next, experiments were carried out by incorporating 10, 40, and 80 ppm titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) in a recommended ternary fuel blend. The experimental investigation showed that D80A10H10TNP40 (diesel 80% + biodiesel 10% + n-heptane 10% + TiO2 40 ppm) caused a 7.21% increase in brake thermal efficiency (BTE) with a decrease in brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) and brake specific energy consumption (BSEC) by 9.58% and 10%, respectively, compared to (diesel 80% + biodiesel 20%) D80A20. D80A10H10TNP40 exhibits lower emissions, with a significant reduction of 11.29% and 20.96% in carbon monoxide (CO) and unburnt hydrocarbons (UBHC), respectively. Nitrogen oxide (NOX) and smoke emissions were reduced by 3.3% and 11.13%, respectively, compared to D80A10H10. Furthermore, D80A10H10TNP40 demonstrated enhanced combustion properties, comprising a significant rise of 4.39% in-cylinder pressure (CP), 35.29% in heat release rate (HRR), and 25.05% in the rate of pressure rise (RPR). The findings of this investigation indicate that D80A10H10TNP40 exhibits enhanced efficiency, emission, and combustion properties compared to the D80A20 fuel.

Structural Fusion Yields Guest Acceptors that Enable Ternary Organic Solar Cells with 18.77 % Efficiency

The design and selection of a suitable guest acceptor are particularly important for improving the photovoltaic performance of ternary organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, we designed and successfully synthesized two asymmetric silicon-oxygen bridged guest acceptors, which featured distinct blue-shifted absorption, upshifted lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels, and larger dipole moments than symmetric silicon-oxygen-bridged acceptor. Ternary devices with the incorporation of 14.2 wt % these two asymmetric guest acceptors exhibited excellent performance with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 18.22 % and 18.77 %, respectively. Our success in precise control of material properties via structural fusion of five-membered carbon linkages and six-membered silicon-oxygen connection at the central electron-donating core unit of fused-ring electron acceptors can attract considerable attention and bring new vigor and vitality for developing new materials toward more efficient OSCs.

A review on current progress of graphene-based ternary nanocomposites in the removal of anionic and cationic inorganic pollutants

The current review aims to summarize the ongoing advances in high-performing graphene-based ternary nanocomposites for removing cationic and anionic inorganic pollutants. Graphene derivatives are extensively utilized for the development of composites due to their high synergism with co-functional materials, rational design, flexible surface chemistry, high mobile charge carriers, improved binding properties, and many more. The past ten years have witnessed progressive research on graphene-based ternary nanocomposites in a multitude of pollution remediation applications. Therefore, the focus falls on understanding how these ternary nanocomposites are tailored to capture the inorganic cationic and anionic contaminants with particular emphasis on graphene derivatives as base matrix and filler. The review investigates the synthesis, categorization, and characterization techniques of graphene-based ternary composites. Besides, the study broadens the understanding of the binding mechanism of the pollutants onto graphene ternary composites. The review also assesses the separation and recycling efficacy of the composites in detail. The future prospects in improving the practical application of the ternary systems also have been discussed. The comprehensive review on graphene based ternary systems detailing their structural and functional aspects, as well as their performance as inorganic decontaminants can provide deep insights for researchers in improvising wastewater treatment technologies.

A comprehensive review on performance, combustion and emissions of ternary and quaternary biodiesel/diesel blends

Global dependency and exhaustive usage of fossil fuels is leading to depletion of fossil fuel energy. The exponential rise in energy demand is an alarming sign; and added to that, emission generation, from burning of fossil fuel, has caused adverse effect on the environment. This paves the way in harvesting renewable energy options for a futuristic clean and healthy environment. The potentiality of biodiesel as an alternate energy option is well explored in past couple of decades. However with biodiesel, NO_x emissions as well as performance of engine from biodiesel is reported to be inferior to that of diesel owing to their inferior physical properties like density and viscosity. The mixture of biodiesels and different types of alcohols neutralizes the inferior property of blends. Ternary or quaternary blends of biodiesel have reported positive engine results. Initially, detailed study of different types of binary blends with respect to performance and emissions is done, trying to identify the research gap with the usage of binary mixture. The paper then dives into detailed study of ternary and quaternary blends with respect to performance, emission and combustion characteristics, trying to highlight different research outcomes.

Visual detection of binary, ternary and quaternary protein interactions in fission yeast using a Pil1 co-tethering assay

Protein-protein interactions are vital for executing nearly all cellular processes. To facilitate the detection of protein-protein interactions in living cells of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe, here we present an efficient and convenient method termed the Pil1 co-tethering assay. In its basic form, we tether a bait protein to mCherry-tagged Pil1, which forms cortical filamentary structures, and examine whether a GFP-tagged prey protein colocalizes with the bait. We demonstrate that this assay is capable of detecting pairwise protein-protein interactions of cytosolic proteins and nuclear proteins. Furthermore, we show that this assay can be used for detecting not only binary protein-protein interactions, but also ternary and quaternary protein-protein interactions. Using this assay, we systematically characterized the protein-protein interactions in the Atg1 complex and in the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PtdIns3K) complexes and found that Atg38 is incorporated into the PtdIns3K complex I via an Atg38-Vps34 interaction. Our data show that this assay is a useful and versatile tool and should be added to the routine toolbox of fission yeast researchers. The investigation of binary and ternary sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes with asiaticoside in solution and in solid state

Asiaticoside (AS) is poorly water-soluble compound that can lead to low the bioavailability. The aims of this study were to determine the cyclodextrin (CD) solubilization of AS and characterize binary AS/CD and ternary AS/CD/polymer complexes in solution- and solid-state. Thermal stability of AS through heating process was determined and found that It could withstand by heating through sonication method. Phase-solubility profiles showed that β-cyclodextrin (βCD) exhibited the greatest solubilizing effect but sulfobutylether-βCD (SBEβCD) was selected for further investigations due to its relatively high complexation efficiency (CE) value. The effect of polymers that were poloxamer 407 (P407) and chitosan (CS) on CD solubilization were investigated. It was found that the increment of CE was resulted from the formation of ternary complexes or complex aggregates with confirmed by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR) data indicated that the cyclohexane moiety of AS was totally inserted into the hydrophobic inner cavity of SBEβCD in the presence or absence of polymer. The molecular modeling study displayed the binding orientation of such complex which correlated to ¹H NMR result. The solid state characterized by Fourier transform infra-red, differential scanning calorimetry and powder X-ray diffraction demonstrated the formation of binary AS/SBEβCD and ternary AS/SBEβCD/polymer inclusion complexes. The enhancement of AS dissolution was achieved in both binary and ternary complexes. The permeation study showed that ternary AS/SBEβCD/CS nanoparticles exhibited a promising controlled drug release nanocarrier.

Improving the flame retardancy of poly(lactic acid) using an efficient ternary hybrid flame retardant by dual modification of graphene oxide with phenylphosphinic acid and nano MOFs

A novel ternary hybrid nanoflake (GPZ) based on graphene oxide (GO), phenylphosphinic acid (PPA) and nano metal-organic framework (nano ZIF-8) particles has been designed and synthesized via a simple two-step strategy. GPZ shows high thermal stability and good compatibility with PLA matrix. When GPZ nanoflakes are added into PLA, the tensile strength and toughness of the PLA-4 with 2.0 wt% of GPZ reach 44.1 MPa and 86.0 MPa compared with 30.0 MPa and 12.8 MPa of pure PLA owing to the good dispersion of GPZ in PLA matrix and their reinforcing effects. The incorporation of GPZ also dramatically enhances the flame retardancy of PLA and the PHRR of PLA-4 with 2.0 wt% of GPZ achieves about 316.2 W/g, which is decreased by 39.5% relative to 523.0 W/g of pure PLA, respectively. The LOI of PLA-4 is 27.0%, increasing about 31.7% compared to 20.5% of pure PLA. Meanwhile, the HRR and THR in the cone calorimeter test curves for the PLA nanocomposites have also been evidently reduced. The TG-IR is applied to characterize the pyrolysis gaseous products and volatile components are suppressed with addition of GPZ. The SEM, Raman and XPS results of char residues show that a protective graphitized char layer plays a major role in improving the flame retardancy, which mainly because of the catalytic and cross-linking effects of GO, nano ZIF-8 and PPA during combustion of PLA nanocomposites.

Poly (lactic acid) blends: Processing, properties and applications

Poly (lactic acid) or polylactide (PLA) is a commercial biobased, biodegradable, biocompatible, compostable and non-toxic polymer that has competitive material and processing costs and desirable mechanical properties. Thereby, it can be considered favorably for biomedical applications and as the most promising substitute for petroleum-based polymers in a wide range of commodity and engineering applications. However, PLA has some significant shortcomings such as low melt strength, slow crystallization rate, poor processability, high brittleness, low toughness, and low service temperature, which limit its applications. To overcome these limitations, blending PLA with other polymers is an inexpensive approach that could also tailor the final properties of PLA-based products. During the last two decades, researchers investigated the synthesis, processing, properties, and development of various PLA-based blend systems including miscible blends of poly l-lactide (PLLA) and poly d-lactide (PDLA), which generate stereocomplex crystals, binary immiscible/miscible blends of PLA with other thermoplastics, multifunctional ternary blends using a third polymer or fillers such as nanoparticles, as well as PLA-based blend foam systems. This article reviews all these investigations and compares the syntheses/processing-morphology-properties interrelationships in PLA-based blends developed so far for various applications.

Composite edible films and coatings from food-grade biopolymers

The development of edible films and coatings from food-grade biopolymers has advanced significantly during the past decade. The current state-of-the-art lies in the formulation of composite edible films and coatings from such biomolecules. Composite films and coatings refer to systems where multiple biopolymers have been combined to achieve beneficial properties. Carbohydrate, protein, and lipids have been preferred for developing such systems. Binary films and coatings have been prepared from multiple combinations including protein-protein, carbohydrate-carbohydrate and protein-carbohydrate. Similarly, ternary films and coatings have been prepared from protein-protein-carbohydrate combinations. In addition, several active ingredients including antimicrobial compounds have been loaded to these systems for the preparation of functional films and coatings. Therefore, the goal of this manuscript is to review the multitude of composite systems that are currently available for food packaging purposes. In addition, we discuss the application of composite coatings to fruits and vegetables, dairy, meat and seafood as model food systems.

Surface States in Ternary CdSSe Quantum Dot Solar Cells

Ternary CdSSe quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) have demonstrated advantages such as wide absorption ranges and tunable band structures. However, the oxygen additives absorbed on such multicomponent quantum dot (QD) surfaces induce band bending at the TiO₂/CdSSe interface and prevent charge transport in QDSCs, as determined via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and synchrotron-based X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) analysis. Annealing of TiO₂/CdSSe QDs photoanodes was conducted at different temperatures under Ar atmospheres to eliminate oxygen additives and interfacial band bending. The short-circuit current (J(sc))of the annealed ternary CdSSe QDSCs is obviously improved, whereas the TiCl4 treatment and MgO coating of the TiO₂ nanocrystals are assisted by the annealing to compensate for the loss of opencircuit voltage (V(oc)) and fill factor (FF). Ternary CdSSe QDSCs with efficiencies of 4.72% have been achieved using the optimized annealing conditions.

Ternary FexCo1-xP Nanowire Array as a Robust Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalyst with Pt-like Activity: Experimental and Theoretical Insight

Replacement of precious Pt with earth-abundant electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) holds great promise for clean energy devices, but the development of low-cost and durable HER catalysts with Pt-like activity is still a huge challenge. In this communication, we report on the development of self-standing ternary Fe_xCo_1-xP nanowire array on carbon cloth (Fe_xCo_1-xP/CC) as a Pt-free HER catalyst with activities being strongly related to Fe substitution ratio. Electrochemical tests show that Fe_0.5Co_0.5P/CC not only possesses Pt-like activity with the need of overpotential of only 37 mV to drive 10 mA cm^-2, outperforming all non-noble-metal HER catalysts reported to date, but demonstrates superior long-term durability in 0.5 M H₂SO₄. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that Fe substitution of Co in CoP leads to more optimal free energy of hydrogen adsorption to the catalyst surface. This study offers us a promising flexible monolithic catalyst for practical applications.

A novel pure component contribution algorithm (PCCA) for extracting components' contribution from severely overlapped signals; an application to UV-spectrophotometric data

A novel, simple and accurate algorithm capable of extracting the contribution of each component from a mixture signal where the components are completely overlapped was developed. It is based on the development of a coded function which eliminates the signal of interfering components using mean centering as a processing tool; finally the pure contribution of each component is extracted. The algorithm allows the determination of each component as a single one. It was validated by the use of simulated data set of three overlapped signals and tested against simulated random noise. Two fit values were developed and calculated for optimization, one to test that that the absorptivity values of the extracted spectra are within the confidence limits of the slope and the other is the correlation between the pure and extracted spectra. It has been successfully applied to real UV data of binary mixture of Ibuprofen and Paracetamol and ternary mixture of Amiloride hydrochloride, Atenolol and Hydrochlorothiazide in tablets and capsules, respectively. The results were compared to previously reported separation method and no significant difference was found regarding both accuracy and precision.
