Abstract
The trans-chelating bis(oxazoline) ligand (R,R)-4,6-dibenzofurandiyl-2,2'-bis(4-phenyloxazoline) [(R,R)-DBFOX/Ph] coordinates metal ions to give C2-symmetric complexes which effectively catalyze a variety of asymmetric reactions. (R,R)-DBFOX/Ph·Ni(ClO4)2·3H2O, whose crystal structure is octahedral with three aqua ligands, can be stored under air for several months without loss of catalytic activity and promotes highly enantioselective reactions even in the presence of excess amounts of water, alcohols, amines, and acids. The complex shows remarkable chiral amplification in asymmetric Diels-Alder (DA) reactions. This review focuses on enantioselective reactions catalyzed by (R,R)-DBFOX/Ph·metal complexes.

Abstract
A brief overview of the coordination chemistry aspects of pincer ligands and their complexes containing at least one oxazoline (i.e., 4,5-dihydro-2-oxazole) unit is presented. This historical perspective is placed into a context of the possible future direction(s) in this particular arena of pincer chemistry. These ideas are compared and contrasted to the overall direction of pincer chemistry since the first such complexes were reported in the 1970s.

Abstract
Starting from tris(benzothiazol-2-yl)phosphane (1) an advanced Janus-head ligand, di(benzothiazol-2-yl)phosphane (2), was synthesised and structurally characterised. The heteroaryl substituents of this ligand provide both hard and soft donor sites. Surprisingly, the phosphorus atom in 2 is divalent and the hydrogen atom is directly bonded to one ring nitrogen atom and hydrogen bonded to the second. Compound 2 decomposes in any common solvent other than diethyl ether and a new preparation to improve the yields of 2 is presented. A coordination polymer, [{Cs(bth)(2)P}8] (3) (bth=benzothiazol-2-yl), was obtained when the sec-phosphane 2 was allowed to react with elemental caesium in a 1:1 ratio in diethyl ether at -78 degrees C. In 3 each anion is coordinated to four caesium cations and vice versa. The central phosphorus atom is coordinated to two metal atoms above and below the mean plane of the anion in positions in which the two lone pairs of a four-electron donor are anticipated. Two additional cations micro-bridge both ring nitrogen atoms. Hence both faces of the Janus-head ligand are coordinated to the same number of metal cations but in a different way.

Abstract
The synthesis of simple imidazolium-based ligand precursors containing a 1,3-alkylidene-2,4,6-trimethylbenzene spacer was examined and different synthetic protocols were applied depending on the nature of the alkylidene arm. For a methylene arm, simple dications 5a,b.2CI were obtained directly. The higher homologue counterparts were conveniently prepared by general multistep routes following a five-step sequence for ethylene dications 6a,b.2Br or a six-step sequence for propylene dications 7a,b.2Br in > or = 52% overall yield. Imidazolium salts based on the shorter methylene spacer were used to prepare palladium complexes (17-20) with N-heterocyclic carbenes via transmetallation from well-defined silver compounds or directly in basic conditions. In order to facilitate spectroscopic characterisation of the palladium species two [Pd(allyl)(bis-oxazoline)]+ (25-26) complexes with the same ligand bridge were synthesized. [PdX2bisL] complexes appeared in solution as mixtures of species, mononuclear with cis- or trans-geometry or oligomeric compounds. The reaction of [PdCl(allyl)]2 and micro-bis(carbene)(AgX)2 complexes in 1 : 1 or in 0.5 : 1 ratio leads to binuclear compounds [Pd2Cl2(allyl)2(micro-bis-carbene)] (19a,19b) and to very labile monomeric [Pd(allyl)(bis-carbene)]+ (20a,20b) compounds, respectively. The preparation of analogous [Pd(allyl)(bis-oxazoline)]+ complexes showed the formation of one of the four possible isomers. [Pd(allyl)(bis-oxazoline)]PF6 complexes were inactive as catalytic precursors in the allylic substitution reaction.

Abstract
[structure: see text] A phenylglycinol-derived tripodal oxazoline with C1-symmetry (C1-PhBTO) was synthesized, and its enantioselective recognition behavior toward alpha-chiral primary organoammonium ions was studied. The C1-PhBTO receptor showed higher selectivity with an opposite sense of enantio-discrimination compared to other C1-symmetric analogues examined but lower selectivity with the same sense of enantioselection compared to its C3-symmetric analogue. Binding studies indicated that the C1-symmetric receptors, particularly C1-PhBTO, interact with the guests in a 2:1 host-guest complex mode in stark contrast to its C3-symmetric analogues.

Abstract
In aqueous solutions, as in organic solvents, rhodium hydrides display the chemistry of one of the three limiting forms, i.e. {Rh(I)+ H+}, {Rh(II)+ H.}, and {Rh(III)+ H-}. A number of intermediates and oxidation states have been generated and explored in kinetic and mechanistic studies. Monomeric macrocyclic rhodium(II) complexes, such as L(H2O)Rh2+ (L = L1 = [14]aneN4, or L2 = meso-Me6[14]aneN4) can be generated from the hydride precursors by photochemical means or in reactions with hydrogen atom abstracting agents. These rhodium(II) complexes are oxidized rapidly with alkyl hydroperoxides to give alkylrhodium(III) complexes. Reactions of Rh(II) with organic and inorganic radicals and with molecular oxygen are fast and produce long-lived intermediates, such as alkyl, superoxo and hydroperoxo complexes, all of which display rich and complex chemistry of their own. In alkaline solutions of rhodium hydrides, the existence of Rh(I) complexes is implied by rapid hydrogen exchange between the hydride and solvent water. The acidity of the hydrides is too low, however, to allow the build-up of observable quantities of Rh(I). Deuterium kinetic isotope effects for hydride transfer to a macrocyclic Cr(v) complex are comparable to those for hydrogen atom transfer to various substrates.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] Palladium-catalyzed alpha-arylation of N-benzoyl sulfoximine ethyl ester with various aryl bromides leads to alpha-arylated products that can easily be hydrolyzed, giving the corresponding N-protected benzyl phenyl sulfoximines. In this manner, new sulfoximine derivatives are accessible that have so far been difficult to prepare in enantiopure form.

Abstract
Metal-stabilized phenoxyl radicals appear to be important intermediates in a variety of enzymatic oxidations. We report that transition metal coordination also supports an aminyl radical, resulting in a stable crystalline complex: [Rh(I)(trop2N.)(bipy)]+OTf- (where trop is 5-H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptene-5-yl, bipy is 2,2'-bipyridyl, OTf- is trifluorosulfonate). It is accessible under mild conditions by one-electron oxidation of the amide complex [Rh(I)(trop2N)(bipy)], at a potential of -0.55 volt versus ferrocene/ferrocenium. Both electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and density functional theory support 57% localization of the unpaired spin at N. In reactions with H-atom donors, the Rh-coordinated aminyl behaves as a nucleophilic radical.

Abstract
The synthesis and structural properties of three new hydridorhodium(III) complexes are reported. Hydrogenolysis of the cyclometalated rhodium dichloride complexes [RhCl(2)[(S,S)-benbox(Me(2))]] (2a-c) leads to formation of the new complexes [RhCl(2)(H)[(S,S)-ip-benbox(Me(2))H]] (3a-c) in 45% to 85% yield. Compounds 3a-c were found to have unusual features by NMR spectroscopy: in particular, downfield shifted aryl proton resonances (8.88-9.03 ppm) that were coupled to the rhodium hydride resonances. Using X-ray crystallographic studies, a variety of solid- and solution-state characterization techniques, and DFT calculations, these features were attributed to the presence of weak pi-type eta(1)-arene interactions in 3a-c.

Abstract
A family of bis(oxazoline) complexes of coordinatively unsaturated monomeric rhodium(II) (2a,b, 3a,b) are described. These complexes serve as catalysts for cyclopropanation of olefins by ethyl diazoacetate, giving excellent yields (66-94%). Enantioselectivities for the cis product isomers are good (61-84%). The reaction shows an unusual preference for formation of the cis isomers. Catalytic aziridination of N-aryl imines with ethyl diazoacetate is also described.

Abstract
Three angular ditopic ligands (1,3-bis(benzimidazol-1-ylmethyl)-4,6-dimethylbenzene L(1), 1,3-bis(benzimidazol-1-ylmethyl)-2,4,6-trimethylbenzene L(2), and 1,4-bis(benzimidazol-1-ylmethyl)-2,3,5,6-tetramethylbenzene L(3)) and one tripodal ligand 1,3,5-tris(benzimidazol-1-ylmethyl)-2,4,6-trimethylbenzene L(4) have been prepared. Reaction of these shape-specific designed ligands with different metal salts affords a series of discrete molecular architectures: [Ag(2)L(1)(2)](BF(4))(2) 1, [Ag(2)L(2)(2)](CF(3)SO(3))(2) 2, [CF(3)SO(3)(-) subset Ag(2)L(3)(2)]CF(3)SO(3) 3, [CF(3)SO(3)(-) subset Ag(2)L(3)(3)]CF(3)SO(3) 4, [ClO(4)(-) subset Cu(2)L(2)(4)](ClO(4))(3) 5, [4H(2)O subset Ni(2)L(2)(4)Cl(4)].6H(2)O 6, [BF(4)(-) subset Ag(3)L(4)(2)](BF(4))(2) 7, [ClO(4)(-) subset Ag(3)L(4)(2)](ClO(4))(2) 8, and [CuI(3)(2-) subset Cu(3)L(4)(2)](2)[Cu(2)I(4)] 9. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, ESI-MS, IR, and NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. 1 is a dinuclear metallacycle with 2-fold rotational symmetry in which two syn-conformational L(1) ligands are connected by two linearly coordinated Ag(+) ions. 2 and 3 are structurally related, consisting of rectangular structures assembled from two linearly coordinated Ag(+) ions and two L(2) or L(3) ligands. The structure of 4 is a trigonal prismatic box consisting of two Ag(+) ions in trigonal planar coordination linked by three L(3) ligands, while the structures of 5 and 6 are tetragonal prismatic cages constructed by two square planar Cu(2+) or Ni(2+) ions linked by four L(2) ligands. The topologies of 7-9 are similar to that of 4; however, these three structures are assembled from three linearly coordinated Ag(+) or Cu(+) ions and two tripodal ligands, representing an alternative strategy to assembling a trigonal prism. (1)H NMR and ESI-MS were utilized to elucidate the solution structures of these macrocycles.

Abstract
The reactions of (HOCH2)2P(C6H4)P(CH2OH)2 (HMPB) and P(CH2OH)3 (THP) with RhCl3.xH2O in aqueous media gave water-soluble complexes cis-[RhCl2{eta2-(HOCH2)2P(C6H4)P(CH2OH)2}2]Cl (3) and fac-[RhCl3(P(CH2OH)3)3] (4) respectively in good yields, X-ray crystal structures of 3 and 4 confirmed their molecular constitution. These reactions provide the first examples demonstrating the kinetic propensity of hydroxymethyl phosphanes to stabilize Rh in +3 oxidation state in water.
