Abstract
A novel synthesis of aryl-substituted, enantioenriched fulvenes from an oxidative Heck cascade and rearrangement of a carboxy-substituted spiro[4.4]nonatriene is disclosed. Mechanistic investigations with density functional theory (DFT) calculations and empirical results support the net transformation occurring through a novel Pd(ii)-mediated 1,5-vinyl shift from a vinyl-palladium intermediate that terminates with protodepalladation. This spiro-to-fused bicycle conversion tolerates a range of electron-rich and deficient arylboronic acids to give a range of mono- and diaryl substituted annulated fulvenes in moderate to good yields and enantiomeric ratios. Overall, this work connects two classes of molecules with a rich history in physical organic chemistry.

Abstract
A method for the synthesis of both symmetric and asymmetric fused spiro[4.4]-nonane-dione derivatives has been developed. It is based on a Diels-Alder reaction of spiro[4.4]nona-2,7-diene-1,6-dione as a dienophile component followed by immediate aromatization of the adduct. An active diene component can be generated using the tetrabromoxylene/NaI system, the 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran/BF3 system, or substituted cyclones.

Abstract
A spirogermabifluorene that bears sterically demanding 3,3′,5,5′-tetra(t-butyl)-2,2′-biphenylene groups (1) was obtained from the reaction of in-situ-generated 2,2′-dilithiobiphenylene with GeCl2·(dioxane). The solid-state structure and the redox behavior of 1 were examined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and electrochemical measurements, respectively. The sterically hindered biphenyl ligands endow 1 with high redox stability and increased electron affinity. The experimental observations were corroborated by theoretical DFT calculations.

Abstract
Diels–Alder reactions between cyclopentadiene analogs and p-benzoquinone were explored in water and yielded 83–97% product, higher than the results reported in water with a catalyst or cetrimonium bromide (CTAB) micelles. The novel adduct 10 was synthesized and further used to synthesize the bi-cage hydrocarbon 4,4′-spirobi[pentacyclo[5.4.0.02,6.03,10.05,9]undecane], which has a high density (1.2663 g cm−3) and a high volumetric heat of combustion (53.353 MJ L−1). Four novel bi-cage hydrocarbon compounds were synthesized in water using this method starting from 2,2′-bi(p-benzoquinone) and cyclopentadiene analogs. Diels–Alder reactions between cyclopentadiene analogs and p-benzoquinone were explored in water and yielded 83–97% product, higher than the results reported in water with a catalyst or cetrimonium bromide (CTAB) micelles.![]()

Abstract
Facial selections are reviewed to propose a new theory, orbital phase environment, for stereoselectivities of organic reactions. The orbital phase environment is a generalized idea of the secondary orbital interaction between the non-reacting centers and the unsymmetrization of the orbitals at the reacting centers arising from in-phase and out-of-phase overlapping with those at the neighboring non-reacting sites. In this context, the nucleophilic addition preferentially occurs on the face of the carbonyl functionality opposite to the better electron-donating orbital at the β position. In a similar manner to the carbonyl cases, the preferred reaction faces of olefins in electrophilic addition reactions are opposite to the better electron-donating orbitals at the β positions. The orbital phase environments in Diels-Alder reactions are also reviewed.

Abstract
Ring contraction followed by an elimination reaction on anti-9-methyl-18-trans-2-(10b,10c-dimethyl-10b,10c-dihydropyrenyl)-2,11-dithia[3,3]metacyclophane gave the desired compound 10b-methyl-10c-[2-(10b,10c-dimethyl-10b,10c-dihydropyrenyl)]-10b,10c-dihydropyrene. 1H NMR spectroscopic analysis indicated a ring current effect over a considerable distance from the macro-molecular plane of each of the aromatic rings with the two pi systems freely rotating. Bathochromic shifts and peak broadening in its electronic spectrum clearly supports the presence of through-space pi-pi interactions between the two aromatic rings. This should serve as a good model to verify homo-conjugation effect in such a novel system where the two pi systems are freely revolving.

Abstract
Spiro[4,5]deca-2,7-diene-1,6-dione (2a) and spiro[5,5]undeca-2,8-diene-1,7-dione (2b) were prepared by a direct synthesis starting from diethyl malonate. The two-step 1,2-reductions (NaBH4/CeCl3) of the diones gave cis/trans-diols, which could be easily transformed into diacetates. Both diacetates were subjected to Pd(0)-catalyzed allylic alkylations, in which the relative stereochemistry was retained.
