Excited-state dynamics of oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene): quadratic coupling and torsional motions

Excited-State Symmetry Breaking and Localization in a Noncentrosymmetric Electron Donor-Acceptor-Donor Molecule

Electronic excitation in quadrupolar conjugated molecules rapidly localizes on a single electron donor-acceptor (DA) branch when in polar environments. The loss of center of inversion upon this excited-state symmetry breaking (ES-SB) can be monitored by exploiting the relaxation of the exclusion rules for IR and Raman vibrational transitions. Here, we compare ES-SB in a right-angled (1) and a centrosymmetric (2) DAD dyes using time-resolved IR spectroscopy. We show that the localization of the excitation can also be identified with the bent molecule 1. We find that contrary to dye 2, subpopulations with localized and delocalized excitation coexist for 1 in weak to medium polar solvents. This difference originates from the torsional disorder present in the excited state of 1 but not of 2. Additionally, irreversible localization in a bent molecule is shown to require higher solvent polarity than in a centrosymmetric one.

Excitation-Wavelength-Dependent Photophysics of a Torsionally Disordered Push-Pull Dye

The torsional disorder of conjugated dyes in the electronic ground state can lead to inhomogeneous broadening of the S1 ←S0 absorption band, allowing for the selective photoexcitation of molecules with different amounts of distortion. Here, we investigate how this affects electronic transitions to upper excited states. We show that torsion of a core-alkynylated push-pull dye can have opposite effects on the oscillator strength of its lowest-energy transitions. Consequently, photoselection of planar and twisted molecules can be achieved by exciting in distinct absorption bands. Whereas this has limited effect in liquids due to fast planarization of the excited molecules, it strongly affects the overall photophysics in a polymeric environment, where torsional motion is hindered, allowing for the photoselection of molecules with different fluorescence quantum yields and intersystem-crossing dynamics.

Slow vibrational relaxation drives ultrafast formation of photoexcited polaron pair states in glycolated conjugated polymers

Glycol sidechains are often used to enhance the performance of organic photoconversion and electrochemical devices. Herein, we study their effects on electronic states and electronic properties. We find that polymer glycolation not only induces more disordered packing, but also results in a higher reorganisation energy due to more localised π-electron density. Transient absorption spectroscopy and femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy are utilised to monitor the structural relaxation dynamics coupled to the excited state formation upon photoexcitation. Singlet excitons are initially formed, followed by polaron pair formation. The associated structural relaxation slows down in glycolated polymers (5 ps vs. 1.25 ps for alkylated), consistent with larger reorganisation energy. This slower vibrational relaxation is found to drive ultrafast formation of the polaron pair state (5 ps vs. 10 ps for alkylated). These results provide key experimental evidence demonstrating the impact of molecular structure on electronic state formation driven by strong vibrational coupling.

Torsional Disorder, Symmetry Breaking, and the Crystal Violet Shoulder Controversy

The nature of the lowest-energy electronic absorption band of crystal violet (CV) and particularly the origin of its high-energy shoulder have been debated since the middle of the past century. The most recent studies invoke a splitting of the S₁ state upon symmetry breaking induced by interactions with the solvent and/or the counterion. Using a combination of stationary and time-resolved polarized spectroscopy together with quantum-chemical calculations, we show that torsional disorder in the ground-state results in an inhomogeneous broadening of the absorption band of CV. The center of the band is mostly due to symmetric molecules with a degenerate S₁ state, whereas the edges originate from transitions to the S₁ and S₂ states of distorted symmetry-broken molecules. Transient-absorption measurements with different excitation wavelengths reveal that these two groups of molecules interconvert rapidly in liquid but not in a rigid environment.

Torsional disorder and planarization dynamics: 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene as a case study

Conjugated molecules with phenylethynyl building blocks are usually characterised by torsional disorder at room temperature. They are much more rigid in the electronic excited state due to conjugation. As a consequence, the electronic absorption and emission spectra do not present a mirror-image relationship. Here, we investigate how torsional disorder affects the excited state dynamics of 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene in solvents of different viscosities and in polymers, using both stationary and ultrafast electronic spectroscopies. Temperature-dependent measurements reveal inhomogeneous broadening of the absorption spectrum at room temperature. This is confirmed by ultrafast spectroscopic measurements at different excitation wavelengths. Red-edge irradiation excites planar molecules that return to the ground state without significant structural dynamics. In this case, however, re-equilibration of the torsional disorder in the ground state can be observed. Higher-energy irradiation excites torsionally disordered molecules, which then planarise, leading to important spectral dynamics. The latter is found to occur partially via viscosity-independent inertial motion, whereas it is purely diffusive in the ground state. This dissimilarity is explained in terms of the steepness of the potential along the torsional coordinate.

Beyond the Threshold: A Study of Chalcogenophene-Based Two-Photon Initiators

A series of nine soluble, symmetric chalcogenophenes bearing hexyl-substituted triphenylamines, indolocarbazoles, or phenylcarbazoles was designed and synthesized as potential two-photon absorption (2PA) initiators. A detailed photophysical analysis of these molecules revealed good 2PA properties of the series and, in particular, a strong influence of selenium on the 2PA cross sections, rendering these materials especially promising new 2PA photoinitiators. Structuring and threshold tests proved the efficiency and broad spectral versatility of two selenium-containing lead compounds as well as their applicability in an acrylate resin formulation. A comparison with commercial photoinitiators Irg369 and BAPO as well as sensitizer ITX showed that the newly designed selenium-based materials TPA-S and TPA-BBS outperform these traditional initiators by far both in terms of reactivity and dose. Moreover, by increasing the ultralow concentration of TPA-BBS, a further reduction of the polymerization threshold can be achieved, revealing the great potential of this series for application in two-photon polymerization (2PP) systems where only low laser power is available.

Molecular Dipole-Induced Photoredox Catalysis for Hydrogen Evolution over Self-Assembled Naphthalimide Nanoribbons

D-π-A type 4-((9-phenylcarbazol-3-yl)ethynyl)-N-dodecyl-1,8-naphthalimide (CZNI) with a large dipole moment of 8.49 D and A-π-A type bis[(4,4'-1,8-naphthalimide)-N-dodecyl]ethyne (NINI) with a negligible dipole moment of 0.28 D, were smartly designed and synthesized to demonstrate the evidence of a molecular dipole as the dominant mechanism for controlling charge separation of organic semiconductors. In aqueous solution, these two novel naphthalimides can self-assemble to form nanoribbons (NRs) that present significantly different traces of exciton dissociation dynamics. Upon photoexcitation of NINI-NRs, no charge-separated excitons (CSEs) are formed due to the large exciton binding energy, accordingly there is no hydrogen evolution. On the contrary, in the photoexcited CZNI-NRs, the initial bound Frenkel excitons are dissociated to long-lived CSEs after undergoing ultrafast charge transfer within ca. 1.25 ps and charge separation within less than 5.0 ps. Finally, these free electrons were injected into Pt co-catalysts for reducing protons to H₂ at a rate of ca. 417 μmol h^-1  g^-1 , correspondingly an apparent quantum efficiency of ca. 1.3 % can be achieved at 400 nm.

Supramolecular Assembly of Conjugated Polymers under Vibrational Strong Coupling

Strong coupling plays a significant role in influencing chemical reactions and tuning material properties by modifying the energy landscapes of the systems. Here we study the effect of vibrational strong coupling (VSC) on supramolecular organization. For this purpose, a rigid-rod conjugated polymer known to form gels was strongly coupled together with its solvent in a microfluidic IR Fabry-Perot cavity. Absorption and fluorescence studies indicate a large modification of the self-assembly under such cooperative VSC. Electron microscopy confirms that in this case, the supramolecular morphology is totally different from that observed in the absence of strong coupling. In addition, the self-assembly kinetics are altered and depend on the solvent vibration under VSC. The results are compared to kinetic isotope effects on the self-assembly to help clarify the role of different parameters under strong coupling. These findings indicate that VSC is a valuable new tool for controlling supramolecular assemblies with broad implications for the molecular and material sciences.

Photoinduced Intramolecular Electron Transfer in Phenylene Ethynylene Naphthalimide Oligomers

This paper reports a photophysical investigation of a series of phenylene ethynylene oligomers (OPE) that are end-substituted with a 1,8-naphthalene imide (NI) acceptor. The NI acceptor is attached to the terminus of the OPEs via an ethynylene (-C≡C-) unit that is linked at the 4-position of the NI unit. A series of three oligomers is investigated, OPE1-NI, OPE3-NI, and OPE5-NI, which contain 1, 3, and 5 phenylene ethynylene repeat units, respectively. The properties of the OPEn-NI series are compared to a corresponding set of unsubstituted OPEs, OPE3 and OPE5, which contain 3 and 5 phenylene ethynylene repeats, respectively. The photophysics of all the compounds are interrogated using a variety of techniques including steady-state absorption, steady-state fluorescence, two-photon absorption, time-resolved fluorescence, and transient absorption spectroscopy on femtosecond-to-microsecond time scales. The effect of solvent polarity on the properties of the oligomers is examined. The results show that the NI-substituted oligomers feature a lowest charge transfer (CT) excited state, where the OPE segment acts as the donor and the NI moiety is the acceptor (OPEn^•+-NI^•-). The absorption spectra in one-photon and two-photon exhibit a clear manifold of absorption features that can be attributed to direct CT absorption. In moderately polar solvents, the emission is dominated by a broad, solvatochromic band that is due to radiative decay from the CT excited state. Ultrafast transient absorption provides evidence for initial population of a locally excited state (LE) which in moderately polar solvents rapidly (∼1 ps) evolves into the CT excited state. The structure, spectroscopy, and dynamics of the CT state are qualitatively similar for OPE3-NI and OPE5-NI, suggesting that delocalization in the OPE segment does not have much effect on the structure or energetics of the CT excited state.

Periodic Fluorescence Variations of CdSe Quantum Dots Coupled to Aryleneethynylenes with Aggregation-Induced Emission

CdSe nanocrystals and aggregates of an aryleneethynylene derivative are assembled into a hybrid thin film with dual fluorescence from both fluorophores. Under continuous excitation, the nanocrystals and the molecules exhibit anticorrelated fluorescence intensity variations, which become periodic at low temperature. We attribute this to a structure-dependent aggregation-induced emission of the aryleneethynylene derivative, which impacts the rate of excitation energy transfer between the molecules and nanocrystals. This work highlights that combining semiconductor nanocrystals with molecular aggregates, which exhibit aggregation-induced emission, can result in emerging optical properties.

Excitation-Wavelength-Dependent Light-Induced Electron Transfer and Twisted Intramolecular Charge Transfer in N,N-Bis(4'-tert-butylbiphenyl-4-yl)aniline Functionalized Borondipyrromethenes

A series of bis(4'-tert-butylbiphenyl-4-yl)aniline (BBA) functionalized borondipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyads, Dyads 1-3, containing the BBA group tethered to BODIPY moiety either directly or through a phenyl or alkynyl phenyl spacers are synthesized, and the light-mediated charge transfer within the chromophores has been systematically investigated. The crystal structure of Dyad-1 showed a tilt of 44.2° between the BODIPY and BBA molecular planes and intermolecular C-H···π interactions with these moieties. Cyclic voltammetric and computational studies showed that the BBA moiety can act as the electron donor (D) and BODIPY as the electron acceptor (A) and the optical absorption studies revealed that an increase in the conjugation of the linker from Dyad-1 to Dyad-2 resulted in bathochromic shifts. Steady-state fluorescence studies involving photoexcitation of the BBA moiety at 326 nm resulted in the decrease in fluorescence intensity of the BBA, indicating the possibility of sequential occurrence of faster photoinduced energy transfer (PEnT) followed by the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) or solely PET within the dyads, and the driving forces of the charge separation were calculated to be exothermic in all of the employed solvents. Parallel time-resolved fluorescence experiments involving the excitation of BBA moiety also supported the occurrence of charge separation in these dyads. Interestingly, excitation of the BODIPY moiety of Dyad-1 and Dyad-2 at 490 nm in solvents of increasing polarity leads to a red-shifted BODIPY emission with weakened intensity. This spectral behavior indicated the occurrence of emission from the locally excited (LE) state in nonpolar solvents, whereas formation of an LE state followed by the rotation of the chromophores at the D-A bond leads to a low energy twisted intramolecular charge transfer state (TICT), resulting in a charge-separated state BBA^+•-BODIPY^-• in polar solvents. Furthermore, the hydrophobicity studies involving the solutions of dyads in admixtures of polar tetrahydrofuran (THF) and nonpolar hexanes revealed that when the fraction of hexanes in these mixtures is increased, the emission of BODIPY moiety was observed to be blue-shifted and exhibited enhanced intensity supporting the occurrence of TICT in these dyads.

Excitation/detection energy controlled anisotropy dynamics in asymmetrically cyano substituted tri-podal molecules

In the present work, the photophysical properties of two series of asymmetrical tri-podal molecules are studied, in order to determine the dependence of energy localization/delocalization phenomena on excitation and detection wavelength, by means of steady state, femtosecond time-resolved fluorescence and anisotropy spectroscopy. The molecules bear triphenylamine as an electron donating core and an acetylenic or olefinic π-conjugated bridge. At the periphery, they are substituted by no, one, two or three -CN groups used as electron acceptors. Thus, the compounds with only one or two -CN groups are asymmetrically substituted. As a comparison, the photophysics of their dipolar and quadrupolar analogues is also presented. The steady state absorption spectra of the asymmetrical tri-podal compounds exhibit a broadening and a low energy shoulder due to the splitting of the excited states. The fluorescence spectra are more red-shifted in the tri-podal molecules with a single -CN group, providing the first evidence of its mostly dipolar nature. Time-resolved anisotropy measurements by using different excitation and detection wavelengths provide clear evidence that the asymmetrical tri-podal molecules with one or two -CN groups behave like octupolar molecules upon high-energy excitation (the initial anisotropy is found 0.1-0.15), while upon low-energy excitation they reveal a behavior expected for linear dipolar or V-shaped quadrupolar molecules (the initial anisotropy is very close to 0.4 and 0.17, respectively). The symmetrical tri-podal compounds with no or three cyano groups, exhibit an anisotropy depolarization time of 2.5 ps attributed to energy hopping. The amplitude of this energy hopping component is wavelength dependent and increases as the excitation is shifted towards the long wavelength edge.

Excitation-Wavelength-Dependent Photoinduced Electron Transfer in a π-Conjugated Diblock Oligomer

Control of photoinduced electron transfer through selective excitation of a π-conjugated diblock oligomeric system featuring tetrathiophene (T₄) and tetra(phenylene ethynylene) (PE₄) donor blocks capped with a naphthalene diimide (NDI) acceptor (T₄PE₄NDI) is demonstrated. Each π-conjugated oligomeric segment has its own discrete ionization potential, electron affinity, and optical band gap which provides an absorption profile that has specific wavelengths that offer selective excitation of the PE₄ and T₄ blocks. Therefore, T₄PE₄NDI can be selectively excited to form a charge-separated state via ultrafast photoinduced electron transfer from the PE₄ segment to NDI when excited at 370 nm, but it does not produce a charge-separated state when excited at 420 nm (T₄). Picosecond transient absorption techniques were performed to probe the excited-state dynamics, revealing ultrafast charge separation (∼4 ps) occurring from the PE₄ segment to NDI when excited at 370 nm, followed by delocalization of the hole over the T₄ segment. On the contrary, electron transfer is suppressed with excitation at longer wavelengths (≥420 nm), where the spectrum is dominated by the T₄ unit. The rate of electron transfer and charge recombination was investigated versus the length of the PE bridge unit in oligomers featuring zero and two PE units (T₄NDI and T₄PE₂NDI). The rate of charge recombination decreases from 1.2 × 10¹¹ to 1.0 × 10⁹ s^-1 with increasing bridge length between the T₄ and NDI components (T₄NDI to T₄PE₄NDI). Furthermore, wavelength-dependent photoinduced electron transfer was not observed in either T₄NDI or T₄PE₂NDI due to an insufficient PE_n bridge length. This work demonstrates the ability to use optical wavelength to control photoinduced electron transfer in a fully π-conjugated oligomer.

pH-Responsive Side Chains as a Tool to Control Aqueous Self-Assembly Mechanisms

pH-Tunable nanoscale morphology and self-assembly mechanism of a series of oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene) (OPE)-based bolaamphiphiles featuring poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) side chains of different length and degree of hydrolysis are described. Protonation and deprotonation of the PEI chains by changing the pH alters the hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance of the systems and, in turn, the strength of intermolecular interactions between the hydrophobic OPE moieties. Low pH values (3) lead to weak interaction between the OPEs and result in spherical nanoparticles, in which aggregation follows an isodesmic mechanism. In contrast, higher pH values (11) induce deprotonation of the polymer chains and lead to a stronger, cooperative aggregation into anisotropic nanostructures. Our results demonstrate that pH-responsive chains can be exploited as a tool to tune self-assembly mechanisms, which opens exciting possibilities to develop new stimuli-responsive materials.

Mechanistic Insights into Statistical Co-Assembly of Metal Complexes

Statistical copolymerization plays a key role in many biological and technological processes; however, mechanistic understanding of the formation of analogous supramolecular counterparts remains limited. Herein, we report detailed insights into the supramolecular co-assembly of two π-conjugated PdII and PtII complexes, which in isolation self-assemble into flexible fibers and nanodisks, respectively. An efficient single-step co-assembly into only one type of nanostructure (fibers or nanodisks) takes place if any of the components is in excess. In contrast, equimolar mixtures lead to PdII -rich fiber-like co-assemblies by a statistical co-nucleation event along with a residual amount of self-sorted nanodisks in a stepwise manner.

Ground-State Structural Disorder and Excited-State Symmetry Breaking in a Quadrupolar Molecule

The influence of torsional disorder around the ethynyl π-bridges of a linear D-π-A-π-D molecule on the nature of its S₁ excited state was investigated using ultrafast time-resolved infrared spectroscopy. By tuning the pump wavelength throughout the S₁ ← S₀ absorption band, subpopulations with different extents of asymmetry could be excited. In nonpolar solvents, the equilibrated S₁ state is symmetric and quadrupolar independently of the initial degree of distortion. Photoexcitation of distorted molecules is followed by planarization and symmetrization of the S₁ state. Excited-state symmetry breaking is only observed in polar environments, where the equilibrated S₁ state has a strong dipolar character. However, neither the extent nor the rate of symmetry breaking are enhanced in an initially distorted molecule. They are only determined by the polarity and the dynamic properties of the solvent.

Interplay between H-Bonding and Preorganization in the Evolution of Self-Assembled Systems

Cooperative π-π interactions and H-bonding are frequently exploited in supramolecular polymerization; however, close scrutiny of their mutual interplay has been largely unexplored. Herein, we compare the self-assembly behavior of a series of C2 - and C3 -symmetrical oligophenyleneethynylenes differing in their amide topology (N- or C-centered). This subtle structural modification brings about drastic changes in their photophysical and supramolecular properties, highlighting the reciprocal impact of H-bonding vs. preorganization on the evolution and final outcome of supramolecular systems.

Solvent modulated excited state processes of push-pull molecule with hybridized local excitation and intramolecular charge transfer character

Recently, a type of synthetic highly efficient OLED molecule based on a hybridized local excitation and charge transfer (HLCT) character has received much attention as a potential high-efficiency fluorescent OLED material. In this article, we report the relaxation dynamics of the excited states of cyano-substituted oligo α-phenylenevinylene-1,4-bis(R-cyano-4-diphenylaminostyryl)-2,5-diphenylbenzene (CNDPASDB) with HLCT character using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy as well as quantum chemical calculations. The dramatic dependence of the fluorescence quantum yield, radiative and non-radiative rate, as well as the excited state relaxation pathways on solvent polarity reveals that the solvation process controls the energy levels of two closely spaced electronic excited states. By employing femtosecond transient absorption spectra, the gradual transition from the LE state to the intramolecular CT state with an increase in solvent polarity is clearly resolved. In low-polarity solvents the fluorescence of CNDPASDB is mainly emission from the LE state, whereas in high-polarity solvents non-radiative decay from the CT state dominates. And in medium-polarity solvents, because of the relatively weaker solvation-induced stabilization of the CT state, its energy could be equal to or slightly lower than that of the LE state, leading to a smaller driving force for LE → CT interconversion; therefore complete LE → CT interconversion cannot take place. In this situation, LE ↔ CT intercrossed equilibration is established and the equilibrium constant is further estimated to be about 4 according to the obtained kinetics, and the equilibrium population of the CT state is about 80%. DFT/TDDFT analysis also confirmed an efficient intercrossing of LE and CT states with an increase in solvent polarity. It is found that upon increasing the solvent polarity, the hole and electron on a molecule are entirely separated, suggesting a complete CT character. These results provide guidance for understanding the relationship between solvent polarity and the HLCT process, as well as for designing and synthesizing advanced OLED materials.

A Retrospective: 10 Years of Oligo(phenylene-ethynylene) Electrolytes: Demystifying Nanomaterials

In this retrospective, we first reviewed the synthesis of the oligo(phenylene-ethynylene) electrolytes (OPEs) we created in the past 10 years. Since the general antimicrobial activity of these OPEs had been reported in our previous account in Langmuir, we are focusing only on the unusual spectroscopic and photophysical properties of these OPEs and their complexes with anionic scaffolds and detergents in this Feature Article. We applied classical all-atom MD simulations to study the hydrogen bonding environment in the water surrounding the OPEs with and without detergents present. Our finding is that OPEs could form a unit cluster or unit aggregate with a few oppositely charged detergent molecules, indicating that the photostability and photoreactivity of these OPEs might be considerably altered with important consequences to their activity as antimicrobials and fluorescence-based sensors. Thus, in the following sections, we showed that OPE complexes with detergents exhibit enhanced light-activated biocidal activity compared to either OPE or detergent individually. We also found that similar complexes between certain OPEs and biolipids could be used to construct sensors for the enzyme activity. Finally, the OPEs could covalently bind to microsphere surfaces to make a bactericidal surface, which is simpler and more ordered than the surface grafted from microspheres with polyelectrolytes. In the Conclusions and Prospects section, we briefly summarize the properties of OPEs developed so far and future areas for investigation.

Well-Defined Alkyne Metathesis Catalysts: Developments and Recent Applications

Although alkyne metathesis has been known for 50 years, rapid progress in this field has mostly occurred during the last two decades. In this article, the development of several highly efficient and thoroughly studied alkyne metathesis catalysts is reviewed, which includes novel well-defined, in situ formed and heterogeneous systems. Various alkyne metathesis methodologies, including alkyne cross-metathesis (ACM), ring-closing alkyne metathesis (RCAM), cyclooligomerization, acyclic diyne metathesis polymerization (ADIMET), and ring-opening alkyne metathesis polymerization (ROAMP), are presented, and their application in natural product synthesis, materials science as well as supramolecular and polymer chemistry is discussed. Recent progress in the metathesis of diynes is also summarized, which gave rise to new methods such as ring-closing diyne metathesis (RCDM) and diyne cross-metathesis (DYCM).

Small Changes With Big Consequences: Swapping Two Atoms In Side Chains Changes Phenylene-Ethynylene Packing And Fluorescence

Engineering the properties of conjugated materials in the solid state is an unsolved, ongoing challenge important to fundamental understanding of how non-covalent interactions dictate packing and key properties, as well as the development of technologies based in organic optoelectronics. The most common design paradigm of such materials divide them into a "main chain" with extended conjugation, the chemical structure of which determines optoelectronic properties, and "side chains" not conjugated to the backbone, which provide solubility when they are long alkyl chains. This paper describes comparisons between phenylene-ethynylene molecules in which slight changes to the structure of "side chains"-swapping hydrogen and fluorine atomic position on an aromatic ring-results in unexpectedly large changes in the solid-state optical properties. In a pair of anisyl-terminated three-ring phenylene-ethynylenes, switching the side chain arenes of benzyl esters from 2,4,6-trifluoro to 2,3,6-trifluoro results in a shift in fluorescence emission spectra of over 100 nm, as well as the opposite direction of force-induced shifting of emission. Through a combination X-ray crystal structures, electronic structure calculations, and comparisons with other derivatives, we describe how the 2,4,6-trifluorinated side chains yield cofacial fluoroarene-arene stacking interactions that twist the PE backbone out of conjugation, while the 2,3,6-trifluoro side chains do not stack, instead yielding more coplanar PE backbones that form intermolecular aggregates. Overall, this work demonstrates how slight modifications to parts of conjugated materials normally considered ancillary to optoelectronic properties can determine their solid-state properties, epitomizing the challenge of rational design but at the same time offering opportunities for materials discovery and improved understanding of non-covalent interactions.

A Tethered Tolane: Twisting the Excited State

The synthesis of a doubly bridged tolane is reported. The target is obtained in a five-step synthesis, starting from commercially available 2-amino-meta-xylene by a combination of a Sandmeyer reaction, radical bromination, and Stille-type coupling, followed by double ring closing. The doubly tethered tolane is crystalline; the two phenyl rings are highly twisted with respect to each other both in solution and in the solid state. Optical spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations show that the doubly bridged tolane is twisted not only in the ground state, but also in the excited state, leading to emission from the twisted state in solution and in the solid state. Strong phosphorescence is observed at cryogenic temperatures.

Excited-State Symmetry Breaking in a Quadrupolar Molecule Visualized in Time and Space

The influence of the length of the push-pull branches of quadrupolar molecules on their excited-state symmetry breaking was investigated using ultrafast time-resolved IR spectroscopy. For this, the excited-state dynamics of an A-π-D-π-A molecule was compared with those of an ADA analogue, where the same electron donor (D) and acceptor (A) subunits are directly linked without a phenylethynyl π-spacer. The spatial distribution of the excitation was visualized in real time by monitoring C≡C and C≡N vibrational modes localized in the spacer and acceptor units, respectively. In nonpolar solvents, the excited state is quadrupolar and the excitation is localized on the π-D-π center. In medium polarity solvents, the excitation spreads over the entire molecule but is no longer symmetric. Finally, in the most polar solvents, the excitation localizes on a single D-π-A branch, contrary to the ADA analogue where symmetry breaking is only partial.

Specific Monitoring of Excited-State Symmetry Breaking by Femtosecond Broadband Fluorescence Upconversion Spectroscopy

Most quadrupolar molecules designed for large two-photon absorption cross section have been shown to undergo symmetry breaking upon excitation to the S₁ state. This was originally deduced from their strong fluorescence solvatochromism and later visualized in real time using transient infrared spectroscopy. For molecules not containing clear IR marker modes, however, a specific real-time observation of the symmetry breaking process remains lacking. Here we show that this process can be resolved using broadband fluorescence upconversion spectroscopy by monitoring the instantaneous emission transition dipole moment. This approach is illustrated with measurements performed on two quadrupolar molecules, with only one of them undergoing excited-state symmetry breaking in polar solvents.

Poly(aryleneethynylene)s: Properties, Applications and Synthesis Through Alkyne Metathesis

Functional polymeric materials have seen their way into every facet of materials chemistry and engineering. In this review article, we focus on a promising class of polymers, poly(aryleneethynylene)s, by covering several of the numerous applications found thus far for these materials. Additionally, we survey the current synthetic strategies used to create these polymers, with a focus on the emerging technique of alkyne metathesis. An overview is presented of the most recent catalytic systems that support alkyne metathesis as well as the more useful alkyne metathesis reaction capable of synthesizing poly(aryleneethynylene)s.

Experimental and theoretical studies of spectroscopic properties of simple symmetrically substituted diphenylbuta-1,3-diyne derivatives

A series of symmetrically substituted diphenylbuta-1,3-diyne (DPB) derivatives possessing electron-donating (N,N-dimethylamino or methoxy) or electron-accepting (nitrile, ester or aldehyde) groups have been prepared and studied with emphasis on their spectral and photophysical properties. The photophysical characteristics of these compounds have been studied in relation to their structures and influence of solvents or temperature. The observed spectral and photophysical properties are explained with the help of potential energy maps in the ground and excited states obtained from density functional theory (DFT, B3LYP, def2TZVP basis set) calculations. The structure-property relationship of all of the compounds is discussed and compared with appropriate diphenylacetylene derivatives.
