Abstract
Although transition metals constitute less than 0.1% of the total mass within a human body, they have a substantial impact on fundamental biological processes across all kingdoms of life. Indeed, these nutrients play crucial roles in the physiological functions of enzymes, with the redox properties of many of these metals being essential to their activity. At the same time, imbalances in transition metal pools can be detrimental to health. Modern analytical techniques are helping to illuminate the workings of metal homeostasis at a molecular and atomic level, their spatial localization in real time, and the implications of metal dysregulation in disease pathogenesis. Fluorescence microscopy has proven to be one of the most promising non-invasive methods for studying metal pools in biological samples. The accuracy and sensitivity of bioimaging experiments are predominantly determined by the fluorescent metal-responsive sensor, highlighting the importance of rational probe design for such measurements. This review covers activity- and binding-based fluorescent metal sensors that have been applied to cellular studies. We focus on the essential redox-active metals: iron, copper, manganese, cobalt, chromium, and nickel. We aim to encourage further targeted efforts in developing innovative approaches to understanding the biological chemistry of redox-active metals.

Abstract
The stable and efficient photochromic and photoswitchable molecular systems designed from spirooxazines are of increasing scientific and practical interest because of their present and future applications in advanced technologies. Among these compounds, chelating spironaphthoxazines have received widespread attention due to their efficient optical response after complexation with some metal ions being of biomedical interest and environmental importance, as well as their good cycle performance and high reliability, especially by metal ion sensing. In this mini-review, we summarize our results in the design of novel photoswitchable chelating spironaphthoxazines with specific substituents in their naphthoxazine or indoline ring systems in view of recent progress in the development of such molecular systems and their applications as metal ion sensors. The design, synthesis methods, and photoresponse of such spirooxazine derivatives relevant to their applications, as well as quantum-chemical calculations for these compounds, are presented. Examples of various design concepts are discussed, such as sulfobutyl, hydroxyl, benzothiazolyl, or ester and carboxylic acid as substituents in the chelating spironaphthoxazine molecules. Further developments and improvements of this interesting and promising kind of molecular photoswitches are outlined.

Abstract
Photochromic sensors have the advantages of diverse isomers for multi-analysis, providing more sensing information and possessing more recognition units and more sensitivity to external stimulations, but they present enormous complexity with various stimulations as well. Deep learning (DL) algorithms contribute a huge advantage at analyzing nonlinear and multidimensional data, but they suffer from nontransparent inner networks, "black-boxes". In this work, we employed the explainable DL approach to process and explicate photochromic sensing. Spirooxazine metallic complexes were adopted to prepare a multi-state analysis array for β-Lactams identification and quantitation. A dataset of 2520 unduplicated fluorescence intensity images was collected for convolutional neural network (CNN) operation. The method clearly discriminated six β-Lactams with 97.98% prediction accuracy and allowed rapid quantification with a concentration range from 1 to 100 mg/L. The photochromic sensing mechanism was verified via molecular simulation and class activation mapping, which explicated how the CNN model assesses the importance of photochromic sensor states and makes a discrimination decision. The explainable DL-assisted analysis method establishes an end-to-end strategy to ascertain and verify the complicated sensing mechanism for device optimization and even new scientific discovery.

Abstract
A spirooxazine derivative, PheSPO (3,3-dimethyl-1-phenethylspiro[indoline-2,3'-naphtho[2,1-b][1,4]oxazine]), as a dual-sensing probe for Cu2+ and Fe3+ was synthesized, and its structure was confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HRMS, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The results reveal that the PheSPO probe is selective to both Cu2+ and Fe3+ through distinct colorimetric responses in acetonitrile. The sensing performance of PheSPO toward Cu2+ was investigated, and upon addition of Cu2+, an instant change in color from colorless to bright yellow with a strong absorption band at 467 nm was observed. Due to a dual-sensing behavior, PheSPO also exhibits a unique response toward Fe3+ that can be discovered from a color change from colorless to red at an absorption wavelength of 514 nm. Based on spectroscopic analyses and density functional theory calculations, the 1:1 stoichiometric complexation of PheSPO with the targeted metal ions was proposed and the binding constants of 1.95 × 103 M-1 for Cu2+ and 1.29 × 103 M-1 for Fe3+ were obtained. In addition, the detection limits of PheSPO for Cu2+ and Fe3+ were 0.94 and 2.01 μM, respectively. To verify its applicability in real samples, PheSPO was further explored for quantitative determination of both Cu2+ and Fe3+ in spiked drinking water. The results showed that the recoveries of Cu2+ and Fe3+ examined using the PheSPO probe were found comparable to those obtained from atomic absorption spectroscopy. Moreover, the PheSPO strip test was developed, and its utilization for qualitative detection of Fe3+ in real rice samples was demonstrated.

Abstract
Photochromic compounds, namely spiropyran, spirooxazine, and naphthopyran, have received much attention, because of their high potential applications in various industrial fields. The aim of this study is to understand the behavior of three photochromic dyes in solution form via statistical approach. The types of dyes and solvents were screened using multilevel factorial design. From the analysis of variance results, it was found that the types of dyes and solvents used as well as their interaction have significant effects on the absorbance and photostability. The naphthopyran compound displayed highest change in absorbance intensity, followed by spiropyran and spirooxazine, when dissolved in isopropanol separately. However, the spirooxazine is the most photostable dye compared to naphthopyran and spiropyran, with ethanol as the solvent. Copyright © 2021 by Authors, Published by BCREC Group. Abstract
Understanding the interactions between the single components of hybrid systems is essential to drive the development of advanced functional materials. A prerequisite for this is the systematic variation of the building blocks of such compounds. Focusing on spiropyran@metal-organic framework (MOF) composite materials with noncovalently attached spiropyran dyes, both the host scaffold and the dye molecules can be systematically tuned. In this work, a broad substitution pattern was applied to systematically elucidate the characteristics of the resulting hybrid materials as a function of the supplemental substitution on spiropyran. The newly developed 12 composites exhibit substitution and host-dependent optical characteristics, which are particularly affected by the substitution of the 6'-position on the chromene ring. Through the favorable combination of the MOF host's polarity and an adequate strength of the spiropyran's indolinedonor-chromeneacceptor pair, reversible conversion between photoisomers is efficiently accomplished, especially for nitro-substituted spiropyrans inside MIL-68(In).

Abstract
Counterfeiting and inverse engineering of security and confidential documents, such as banknotes, passports, national cards, certificates, and valuable products, has significantly been increased, which is a major challenge for governments, companies, and customers. From recent global reports published in 2017, the counterfeiting market was evaluated to be $107.26 billion in 2016 and forecasted to reach $206.57 billion by 2021 at a compound annual growth rate of 14.0%. Development of anticounterfeiting and authentication technologies with multilevel securities is a powerful solution to overcome this challenge. Stimuli-chromic (photochromic, hydrochromic, and thermochromic) and photoluminescent (fluorescent and phosphorescent) compounds are the most significant and applicable materials for development of complex anticounterfeiting inks with a high-security level and fast authentication. Highly efficient anticounterfeiting and authentication technologies have been developed to reach high security and efficiency. Applicable materials for anticounterfeiting applications are generally based on photochromic and photoluminescent compounds, for which hydrochromic and thermochromic materials have extensively been used in recent decades. A wide range of materials, such as organic and inorganic metal complexes, polymer nanoparticles, quantum dots, polymer dots, carbon dots, upconverting nanoparticles, and supramolecular structures, could display all of these phenomena depending on their physical and chemical characteristics. The polymeric anticounterfeiting inks have recently received significant attention because of their high stability for printing on confidential documents. In addition, the printing technologies including hand-writing, stamping, inkjet printing, screen printing, and anticounterfeiting labels are discussed for introduction of the most efficient methods for application of different anticounterfeiting inks. Abstract
Materials exhibiting reversible changes in optical properties upon light irradiation have shown great potential in diverse optoelectronic areas. In particular, the modulation of photochromic behavior on demand for such materials is of fundamental importance, but it remains a formidable challenge. Here, we report a facile and effective strategy to engineer controllable photochromic properties by varying the counterions in a series of zinc complexes consisting of a spirolactam-based photochromic ligand. Colorability and coloration rate can be finely tuned by conveniently changing their counterions. Through utilization of the reversible feature of the metal-ligand coordination bond between Zn2+ and the spirolactam-based ligand, dynamic manipulation of photochromic behavior was achieved. Furthermore, we demonstrated the practical applications of the tunable photochromic properties for these complexes by creating photochromic films and developing multilevel security printing. These findings show opportunities for the development of smart materials with dynamically controllable responsive behavior in advanced optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
The dark-orange monomer single crystals of 1,1'-dioxo-1H-2,2'-biindene-3,3'-diyldidodecanoate (BIT-dodeca2) convert to a transparent single-crystalline polymer (PBIT-dodeca2) material via a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) polymerization reaction under sunlight, which then undergoes reverse thermal transformation into BIT-dodeca2 single crystals, leading to reversible photo-/thermochromism, coupled with mechanical actuation. We exploit the properties of this unique material to demonstrate the formation of monomer-polymer heterostructures in selected regions of single crystals with micrometer-scale precision using a laser. This is the first example of heterostructure patterning involving monomer-polymer domains in single crystals. We reveal that the speed of photomechanical bending induced by the polymerization reaction in this example is comparable to those of the well-known diarylethene derivatives, in which electrocyclic ring-closing-ring-opening reactions operate. Furthermore, we characterize the distinct mechanical properties of the monomer and polymer using a quantitative nanoindentation technique as well as demonstrate photopatterning on a monomer-coated paper for potential use in security devices. These crystals with several advantages, such as photomechanical bending (weight lifting) even when the crystal size is large, responsiveness to both UV and visible light, distinct solubilities (the polymer is insoluble, whereas the monomer is soluble in most organic solvents) and colors, provide unique opportunities for their use at different length scales of the sample (μm to mm) for various purposes.

Abstract
The development of stimuli-responsive small molecules for probing biologically active antioxidants such as glutathione (GSH) has important ramifications in the detection of oxidative stress. An ideal sensor for biological applications should exhibit sufficient sensitivity and selectivity for detection at physiological concentrations and be reversible to allow continuous and dynamic monitoring of antioxidant levels. Designing a suitable sensor thus requires a detailed understanding of activation properties and mechanism of action. In this work, we report a new set of GSH-responsive spiropyrans and demonstrate how changes in the electronic structure of spiropyrans influence GSH sensing with high specificity versus other structurally similar and biologically relevant redox-active molecules. The sensitivity, selectivity, kinetics, binding constant, and reversibility of GSH-responsive-substituted spiropyrans were investigated using UV-vis spectroscopy and laser irradiation experiments. Detailed studies of the mechanism of interaction between spiropyrans with GSH were investigated using NMR spectroscopy. Understanding how electronic effects impact the sensing ability of spiropyrans toward antioxidants and elucidating the mechanism of the spiropyran-GSH interaction will facilitate the design of more effective sensors for detection of antioxidants in vivo.

Abstract
Photochromic molecules can respond to external stimulations and undergo reversible conversion between different chemical structures, providing one photochromic molecule with multiple recognition states for targeting compounds. Here we design a facile sensor microchip with only one photochromic molecule (spirooxazine) to discriminate multiplex metal ions. The sensor chip performs in dark, ultraviolet, or visual stimulation, resulting in different molecular states of spirooxazine-metallic coordination and patterned fluorescent signals for analysis. By using this sensor microchip, 11 metal ions are discriminated. Furthermore, mineral water of 16 different brands and metal ions in human serum are distinguished.

Abstract
Controllable quantum systems are under active investigation for quantum computing, secure information processing, and nonvolatile memory. The optical manipulation of spin quantum states provides an important strategy for quantum control with both temporal and spatial resolution. Challenges in increasing the lifetime of photoinduced magnetic states at T > 200 K have hindered progress toward utilizing photomagnetic materials in quantum device architectures. Here we demonstrate reversible light-induced magnetization switching in an organic thin film at device operating temperatures of 300-330 K. By utilizing photochromic ligands that undergo structural changes in the solid state, the changes in ligand field associated with photoisomerization modulate the ligand field and in turn the oxidation and spin state of a bound metal center. Green light irradiation (λexc = 550 nm) of a spirooxazine cobalt-dioxolene complex induces photoisomerization of the ligand that in turn triggers a reversible intramolecular charge-transfer coupled spin-transition process at the cobalt center. The generation of photomagnetic states through conversion between a low-spin Co(III)-semiquinone doublet and a high-spin Co(II)-bis-semiquinone sextet state has been demonstrated in both solution and the solid state and is described as a photoisomerization-induced spin-charge excited state (PISCES) process. The high transition temperature (325 K) and long-lived photoinduced state (τ = 10 s at 300 K) are dictated by the photochromic ligand. Theory provides effective modeling of the phenomenon and long-term strategies to further modulate the lifetimes of photomagnetic states for quantum information technologies at the single molecule level.

Abstract
Direct access to the protonated merocyanine forms of two substituted spiropyrans by mechanosynthesis or sonochemistry was explored. The compounds were formed by the condensation reaction of the methyleneindolium iodide salt with salicylaldehyde derivatives. X-ray crystallography, 1H NMR spectroscopy, ab initio geometry optimization, and absorption spectroscopy were combined to provide a better understanding of the four-state molecular switch system in which the newly synthesized protonated merocyanines were found to play a central role. The results of this study suggest that the stability of the protonated merocyanines requires acidic conditions, as treatment with base led to the corresponding unprotonated merocyanines, which in turn spontaneously converted into photochromic closed spiropyrans.

Abstract
Carboxamidines functionalized with either a spiropyran or fulgimide photoswitch were prepared on multigram scales. The thermal, electrochemical, and photochemical ring isomerizations of these compounds were studied and the results compared with related systems. The photochemical isomerisations were found to be reversible and could be followed by 1H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy. The spiropyran/merocyanine couple was thermally active and an activation enthalpy of 116 kJ mol-1 was measured for ring-opening. These measurements yielded an enthalpy difference of 25 kJ mol-1 between the open and closed states which is consistent with DFT calculations. DFT calculations predicted a charge transfer to the carboxamidine group upon ring closure in the fulgimide and a charge transfer from the carboxamidine group upon switching the spiropyran to the merocyanine form. This was confirmed experimentally by monitoring the change in the oxidation potential assigned to the carboxamidine group. The potential of these molecules to therefore act as a new class of photoresponsive ligands that can modulate the ligand field of a complex is discussed.

Abstract
Stability and integration are the goals for developing photonic devices. Spirooxazines have the property of photoinduced merocyanine-aggregation in polymer matrix, which can be applied to fluorescence emission and stable information storage. Although visible light coherent radiation with UV-assist has been used to achieve polarization-modulated holographic memory in spirooxazine doped PMMA films, the complexity of optical systems is increased and the aggregation ability of merocyanine is decreased. Here, we report that fluorescent holographic gratings with a surface relief structure can be inscribed in the film via sole irradiation of 403.4 nm. Time-dependent photo-anisotropy and holographic dynamics were both investigated with different power densities of the near-UV laser. The non-exponential photokinetics was explained by the sequential formation of mono- and aggregate-merocyanine molecules. The appearance of merocyanine aggregates is found to be beneficial to the long-term holographic memory with fluorescent emission. This work provides a research strategy for the integrity of storage, display and micro-fabrication of organic functional-devices.

Abstract
Novel light-responsive nanoparticles were synthesized by decorating the surfaces of gold and silver nanoparticles with a nitrospiropyran molecular photoswitch. Upon exposure to UV light in nonpolar solvents, these nanoparticles self-assembled to afford spherical aggregates, which disassembled rapidly when the UV stimulus was turned off. The sizes of these aggregates depended on the nanoparticle concentration, and their lifetimes could be controlled by adjusting the surface concentration of nitrospiropyran on the nanoparticles. The conformational flexibility of nitrospiropyran, which was altered by modifying the structure of the background ligand, had a profound impact on the self-assembly process. By coating the nanoparticles with a spiropyran lacking the nitro group, a conceptually different self-assembly system, relying on a reversible proton transfer, was realized. The resulting particles spontaneously (in the dark) assembled into aggregates that could be readily disassembled upon exposure to blue light.

Abstract
In this work the thermal and photochemical reactivity of a series of ruthenium complexes [Ru(terpy)(N-N)(L)](X)2 (terpy = 2,2';6',2″-terpyridine, L = 2-(methylthio)ethanol (Hmte) or water, and X is Cl(-) or PF6(-)) with four different bidentate chelates N-N = bpy (2,2'-bipyridine), biq (2,2'-biquinoline), dcbpy (6,6'-dichloro-2,2'-bipyridine), or dmbpy (6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine), is described. For each chelate N-N the thermodynamic constant of the dark equilibrium between the aqua- and Hmte- complexes, the Hmte photosubstitution quantum yield, and the rate constants of the thermal interconversion between the aqua and Hmte complexes were measured at room temperature. By changing the steric hindrance and electronic properties of the spectator N-N ligand along the series bpy, biq, dcbpy, dmbpy the dark reactivity clearly shifts from a nonlabile equilibrium with N-N = bpy to a very labile thermal equilibrium with N-N = dmbpy. According to variable-temperature rate constant measurements in the dark near pH = 7 the activation enthalpies for the thermal substitution of H2O by Hmte are comparable for all ruthenium complexes, whereas the activation entropies are negative for bpy and biq, and positive for dcbpy and dmbpy complexes. These data are indicative of a change in the substitution mechanism, being interchange associative with nonhindered or poorly hindered chelates (bpy, biq), and interchange dissociative for more bulky ligands (dcbpy, dmbpy). For the most labile dmbpy system, the thermal equilibrium is too fast to allow significant modification of the composition of the mixture using light, and for the nonhindered bpy complex the photosubstitution of Hmte by H2O is possible but thermal binding of Hmte to the aqua complex does not occur at room temperature. By contrast, with N-N = biq or dcbpy the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters describing the formation and breakage of the Ru-S bond lie in a range where the bond forms spontaneously in the dark, but is efficiently cleaved under light irradiation. Thus, the ratio between the aqua and Hmte complex in solution can be efficiently controlled at room temperature using visible light irradiation.
