Directed Metalation Route to Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals with a Chiral Fluorenol Core: The Effect of Restricted Rotation on Polar Order

Interrupted Corey-Chaykovsky Reaction of Tethered Bis-Enones to Access 2,3-Epoxy-hexahydrofluoren-9-ones

The Corey-Chaykovsky reaction is usually employed to synthesize cyclopropanes from activated olefins. We intercepted the intermediates prevailing during this transformation and diverted the process for the creation of intricate molecular motifs. We describe an unusual skeletal remodelling of tethered bis-enones to 2,3-epoxy-hexahydrofluoren-9-ones via an "interrupted Corey-Chaykovsky reaction". The strategy rationally merges the nucleophilic features of sulfur ylides with electronically biased olefins to achieve the regio- and stereoselective synthesis of several new classes of hydrofluorenones. We have demonstrated the synthetic utility of the products in accessing several highly functionalized molecules.

Enantioconvergent synthesis of chiral fluorenols from racemic secondary alcohols via Pd(ii)/chiral norbornene cooperative catalysis

An efficient protocol for the asymmetric synthesis of fluorenols has been developed through an enantioconvergent process enabled by Pd(ii)/chiral norbornene cooperative catalysis. This approach allows facile access to diverse functionalized chiral fluorenols with constantly excellent enantioselectivities, applying readily available racemic secondary ortho-bromobenzyl alcohols and aryl iodides as the starting materials.

Fluorination Enables Dual Ferroelectricity in Both Solid- and Liquid-Crystal Phases

Ferroelectric materials are a special type of polar substances, including solids or liquid crystals. However, obtaining a material to be ferroelectric in both its solid crystal (SC) and liquid crystal (LC) phases is a great challenge. Moreover, although cholesteric LCs inherently possess the advantage of high fluidity, their ferroelectricity remains unknown. Here, through the reasonable H/F substitution on the fourth position of the phenyl group of the parent nonferroelectric dihydrocholesteryl benzoate, we designed ferroelectric dihydrocholesteryl 4-fluorobenzoate (4-F-BDC), which shows ferroelectricity in both SC and cholesteric LC phases. The fluorination induces a lower symmetric polar P1 space group and a new solid-to-solid phase transition in 4-F-BDC. Beneficial from fluorination, the SC and cholesteric LC phases of 4-F-BDC show clear ferroelectricity, as confirmed by well-shaped polarization-voltage hysteresis loops. The dual ferroelectricity in both SC and cholesteric LC phases of a single material was rarely found. This work offers a viable case for the exploration of the interplay between ferroelectric SC and LC phases and provides an efficient approach for designing ferroelectrics with dual ferroelectricity and cholesteric ferroelectric liquid crystals.

Directed ortho and Remote Metalation-Suzuki-Miyaura Cross Coupling Route to Azafluorenol Core Liquid Crystals

Two new smectic C* mesogens containing a hexyloxy side chain and an azafluorenone (3a) or azafluorenol (3b) core were synthesized using a combined directed ortho metalation-directed remote metalation-Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling strategy. 3b was formed in 10 steps and 25% overall yield based on starting benzamide 1a. 3a forms a nematic phase, while 3b forms a smectic A phase. The large temperature range of the smectic phase for the azafluorenol 3b is indicative of mesophase stabilization by intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl group and pyridine nitrogen of neighboring 3b molecules.

Tunable Synthesis of Indeno[1,2-c]furans and 3-Benzoylindenones via FeCl3-Catalyzed Carbene/Alkyne Metathesis Reaction of o-Alkynylbenzoyl Diazoacetates

An efficient synthesis of indeno[1,2-c]furan and 3-benzoylindenone derivatives through a FeCl₃-catalyzed carbene/alkyne metathesis reaction of o-alkynylbenzoyl diazoacetates is presented. Mechanistically, the key intermediate, vinyl iron carbene, is formed by 5-exo-dig carbocyclization and terminated with a formal [3 + 2] cycloaddition or carbonylation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example in which FeCl₃ is used as a catalyst for a carbene/alkyne metathesis reaction. Finally, derivatization reactions were carried out to showcase the value of the products.

Fluorenone imidazolium salts as novel de Vries materials

In ionic liquid crystals (ILCs) tilted mesophases such as SmC required for electro-optic devices are quite rare. We report a design concept that induced the SmC phase and enabled de Vries-like behaviour in ILCs. For this purpose, we synthesized and characterized a library of ILC derivatives ImR(On,Ym)X which consist of a rigid central fluorenone core containing an alkoxy or thioether side chain and connected via a flexible spacer to an imidazolium head group. The mesomorphic properties were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Temperature-dependent measurements of smectic layer spacing d by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and of optical tilt angles by POM demonstrate that ILCs ImR(On,Ym)X undergo SmA–SmC phase transitions with maximum layer contraction values between 0.4% and 2.1%. The lowest reduction factor R of 0.2 at the reduced temperature T − T_AC = −10 K was calculated for Im(O12,S14)Br. Electron density calculations indicated a bilayer structure. Furthermore, temperature dependent emission studies show that self-assembling has a strong influence on the emission intensity of these ILCs.

The Lyotropic Analog of the Polar SmC* Phase

Only six years ago, the first clear-cut example of a ferroelectric, lyotropic liquid crystal was discovered. Since then, ongoing investigations in this new research field provided numerous instances of the missing pieces to complete the formerly blank picture of the lyotropic smectic C* (SmC*) phase. In this review we wanted to combine these new results and put them into a wider historical and scientific context. We start by giving an introduction about characteristic features of the well-known thermotropic SmC* phase and why it is so difficult to find a lyotropic equivalent of this fascinating phase. After discussing early examples of achiral lyotropic and swollen SmC phases, we recap the discovery of the first lyotropic SmC* phase. The molecular features necessary for its formation and its properties are analyzed. We place special emphasis on discussing the long-range orientational order of the tilt direction and the corresponding chirality effects. By comparing these exceptional features with thermotropic and swollen SmC* phases, we aim to improve not only the understanding of the lyotropic SmC* phase, but also of the relationship between thermotropic and lyotropic systems in general.

An enantioselective organocatalytic intramolecular Morita–Baylis–Hillman (IMBH) reaction of dienones, and elaboration of the IMBH adducts to fluorenones

An efficient synthesis of cyclopenta-fused arenes and heteroarenes has been achieved via an enantioselective organocatalytic intramolecular Morita–Baylis–Hillman (IMBH) reaction of dienones. The IMBH-adducts were transformed to fluorenones in a serendipitous manner.

Rh(I) -Catalyzed Intramolecular Carbonylative C-H/C-I Coupling of 2-Iodobiphenyls Using Furfural as a Carbonyl Source

Synthesis of fluoren-9-ones by a Rh-catalyzed intramolecular C-H/C-I carbonylative coupling of 2-iodobiphenyls using furfural as a carbonyl source is presented. The findings indicate that the rate-determining step is not a C-H bond cleavage but, rather, the oxidative addition of the C-I bond to a Rh(I) center.

Synthesis of Fluoren-9-ones and Ladder-Type Oligo-p-phenylene Cores via Pd-Catalyzed Carbonylative Multiple C-C Bond Formation

A new route to various substituted fluoren-9-ones has been developed via an efficient Pd-catalyzed carbonylative multiple C-C bond formation. Under a CO atmosphere, using commercially available aryl halides and arylboronic acids as substrates, this three-component reaction proceeded smoothly in moderate to excellent yields with good functional-group compatibility. The mechanistic investigations suggested a sequential process for the reaction that forms o-bromobiaryls in the first stage followed by a cyclocarbonylation reaction. This chemistry has been successfully extended to construct ladder-type oligo-p-phenylene cores.

Synthesis of a new heterocyclic system — Fluoreno[1,2-d]imidazol-10-one

Synthesis of various substituted fluoreno[1,2-d]imidazol-10-ones (5a–5g) has been accomplished by the cyclization of diazotized 1-substituted 4-benzoyl-5- aminobenzimidazoles (4a–4g). Compounds 4a–4g were prepared by reductive ring opening of 3H-imidazo[4′,5′:3,4]benzo[c]isoxazoles (3a–3g) with zinc dust in EtOH/NaOH solution.

1,2,3-Triazoles

Rapid progress in the synthetic application of benzotriazole derivatives in the last 20 years has resulted in over 1000 scientific papers on the subject. This fact is reflected in Section 5.01.7, which involves almost a half of the volume of this chapter. The section is arranged according to hybridization of the C-α atom and atomic numbers of the atoms in positions β and γ to allow an easy access to the material of interest. Recent discovery of copper catalysis in [3+2] cycloadditions of azides to acetylenes, the so-called ‘click chemistry’, which boosted application of the 1,2,3-triazole derivatives, especially in medicinal chemistry, is presented in Section 5.01.9. From the point of view of practical applications, Section 5.01.11 is organized according to the number, position, and combination of the substituents at the aromatic rings. Another novel feature that has no precedence in the previous editions of Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry is an addition of triazole and benzotriazole complexes with various transitions metals to Section 5.01.4.

Baker's yeast-mediated enantioselective reduction of substituted fluorenones

In the presence of DMSO as co-solvent and under vigorous agitation, baker's yeast in water was found to reduce substituted fluorenones to the corresponding fluorenols in good to excellent enantioselectivities.

Functional Liquid-Crystalline Assemblies: Self-Organized Soft Materials

In the 21st century, soft materials will become more important as functional materials because of their dynamic nature. Although soft materials are not as highly durable as hard materials, such as metals, ceramics, and engineering plastics, they can respond well to stimuli and the environment. The introduction of order into soft materials induces new dynamic functions. Liquid crystals are ordered soft materials consisting of self-organized molecules and can potentially be used as new functional materials for electron, ion, or molecular transporting, sensory, catalytic, optical, and bio-active materials. For this functionalization, unconventional materials design is required. Herein, we describe new approaches to the functionalization of liquid crystals and show how the design of liquid crystals formed by supramolecular assembly and nano-segregation leads to the formation of a variety of new self-organized functional materials.

Nano-Segregated Polymeric Film Exhibiting High Ionic Conductivities

Nanostructures can be used for the fabrication of highly functional materials transporting ions and charges. We demonstrate a new design strategy for polymeric higher ion-conductors. Phase-segregated layers of alternating mobile tetra(ethylene oxide)s (TEOs) and rigid aromatic cores where the TEO moieties are grafted from aromatic layers have been shown to be efficient to transport lithium triflate. Such segregated structures at the nanometer scale (nano-segregated structures) were prepared by in-situ photopolymerization of an aligned methacrylate liquid crystalline monomer comprising a terphenyl rigid rod mesogen having a TEO terminal chain. The ion-conductive TEO moiety remains in the highly mobile state even after polymerization, which is indicated by its low glass transition temperature (-45 degrees C). This nanostructured film exhibits an ionic conductivity parallel to the layer of 10(-3) S cm(-1) at room temperature. The highest ionic conductivity is in the level of 10(-2) S cm(-1) observed at 150 degrees C. The anisotropic ionic conductivities have been observed for the nano-segregated film.

Bis(oxofluorenediyl)oxacyclophanes: Synthesis, Crystal Structure and Complexation with Paraquat in the Gas Phase

The first three representatives of the new family of oxacyclophanes incorporating two 2,7-dioxyfluorenone fragments, connected by [-CH(2)CH(2)O-](m) spacers (m=2-4), have been synthesized. The yield of the smallest oxacyclophane (m=2) is considerably higher with respect to the larger ones (m=3 and m=4), which are formed in comparable yields. Molecular modeling and NMR spectra analysis of the model compounds suggest that an essential difference in oxacyclophanes yields is caused by formation of quasi-cyclic intermediates, which are preorganized for macrocyclization owing to intramolecular pi-pi stacking interactions between the fluorenone units. The solid-state structures of these oxacyclophanes exhibit intra- and intermolecular pi-pi stacking interactions that dictate their rectangular shape in the fluorenone backbone and crystal packing of the molecules with the parallel or T-shape arrangement. The crystal packing in all cases is also sustained by weak C--HO hydrogen bonds. FAB mass spectral analysis of mixtures of the larger oxacyclophanes (m=3 and m=4) and a paraquat moiety revealed peaks corresponding to the loss of one and two PF(6) (-) counterions from the 1:1 complexes formed. However, no signals were observed for complexes of the paraquat moiety with the smaller oxacyclophane (m=2). Computer molecular modeling of complexes revealed a pseudorotaxane-like incorporation of the paraquat unit, sandwiched within a macrocyclic cavity between the almost parallel-aligned fluorenone rings of the larger oxacyclophanes (m=3 and m=4). In contrast to this, only external complexes of the smallest oxacyclophane (m=2) with a paraquat unit have been found in the energy window of 10 kcal mol(-1).
