The F/Ph Rearrangement Reaction of [(Ph3P)3RhF], the Fluoride Congener of Wilkinson's Catalyst

Activation of SO2F2 at a Rhodium PNP Pincer Complex: Ligand Supported S-F Bond Cleavage to Generate NSO2F Derivatives

The κ2-(P,N)-phosphine ligand precursor NH(CH2CH2PCy2)2 can be used for the synthesis of the rhodium(I) complex [Rh(CO){ĸ3-(P,N,P)-Cy2PC2H4NHC2H4PCy2}][Cl] (1). The deprotonated complex [Rh(CO){ĸ3-(P,N,P)-Cy2PC2H4NC2H4PCy2}] (2) shows a cooperative reactivity of the PNP ligand in the activation reaction of SO2F2 to yield the rhodium fluorido complex trans-[Rh(F)(CO){ĸ2-(P,P)-Cy2PC2H4N(SO2F)C2H4PCy2}]2 (3) by S-F bond cleavage. It is remarkable that no reaction was observed when 3 was treated with hydrogen sources e. g. dihydrogen, organosilicon compounds such as triethylsilane or TMS-CF3 and different fluorine sources such as SF4 or Selectfluor®. However, the treatment of complex 3 with XeF2 in the presence of CsF resulted in the formation of the unique fluorido rhodium(III) complex cis,trans-[Rh(F)3(CO){ĸ2-(P,P)-Cy2PC2H4N(SO2F)C2H4PCy2}]2 (4). In the presence of pyridine(HF)X or BF3 the fluorido complex 3 converted into the dicationic complexes [Rh(CO){ĸ2-(P,P)-Cy2PC2H4N(SO2F)C2H4PCy2}]2[XF]2, X=HF (5) or BF3 (6), respectively.

Monofluorophos-Metal Complexes: Ripe for Future Discoveries in Homogeneous Catalysis

The discovery that cyclic (ArO)2PF can support Rh-catalysts for hydroformylation with significant advantages in tuning regioselectivity transformed the study of metal complexes of monofluorophos ligands from one of primarily academic interest to one with potentially important applications in catalysis. In this review, the syntheses of monofluorophosphites, (RO)2PF, and monofluorophosphines, R2PF, are discussed and the factors that control the kinetic stability of these ligands to hydrolysis and disproportionation are set out. A survey of the coordination chemistry of these two classes of monofluorophos ligands with d-block metals is presented, emphasising the bonding of the fluorophos to d-block metals, predominantly in low oxidation states. The application of monofluorophos ligands in homogeneous catalysis (especially hydroformylation and hydrocyanation) is discussed, and it is argued that there is great potential for monofluorophos complexes in future catalytic applications.

Emerging Trends in Cross-Coupling: Twelve-Electron-Based L1Pd(0) Catalysts, Their Mechanism of Action, and Selected Applications

Monoligated palladium(0) species, L1Pd(0), have emerged as the most active catalytic species in the cross-coupling cycle. Today, there are methods available to generate the highly active but unstable L1Pd(0) catalysts from stable precatalysts. While the size of the ligand plays an important role in the formation of L1Pd(0) during in situ catalysis, the latter can be precisely generated from the precatalyst by various technologies. Computational, kinetic, and experimental studies indicate that all three steps in the catalytic cycle─oxidative addition, transmetalation, and reductive elimination─contain monoligated Pd. The synthesis of precatalysts, their mode of activation, application studies in model systems, as well as in industry are discussed. Ligand parametrization and AI based data science can potentially help predict the facile formation of L1Pd(0) species.

Reactivity of Xantphos-Type Rhodium Complexes Towards SF4 : SF3 Versus SF2 Complex Generation

S-F-bond activation of sulfur tetrafluoride at [Rh(Cl)(tBu xanPOP)] (1; tBu xanPOP=9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis-(di-tert-butylphosphino)-xanthene) led to the formation of the cationic complex [Rh(F)(Cl)(SF2 )(tBu xanPOP)][SF5 ] (2 a) together with trans-[Rh(Cl)(F)2 (tBu xanPOP)] (3) and cis-[Rh(Cl)2 (F)(tBu xanPOP)] (4) which both could also be obtained by the reaction of SF5 Cl with 1. In contrast to that, the conversion of SF4 at the methyl complex [Rh(Me)(tBu xanPOP)] (5) gave the isolable and room-temperature stable cationic λ4 -trifluorosulfanyl complex [Rh(Me)(SF3 )(tBu xanPOP)][SF5 ] (6). Treatment of 6 with the Lewis acids BF3 or AsF5 produced the dicationic difluorosulfanyl complex [Rh(Me)(SF2 )(tBu xanPOP)][BF4 ]2 (8 a) or [Rh(Me)(SF2 )(tBu xanPOP)][AsF6 ]2 (8 b), respectively. Refluorination of 8 a was possible with the use of dimethylamine giving [Rh(Me)(SF3 )(tBu xanPOP)][BF4 ] (9). A reaction of 6 with trichloroisocyanuric acid (TClCA) gave the fluorido complex [Rh(F)(Cl)(SF2 )(tBu xanPOP)][Cl] (2 b) together with chloromethane and SF5 Cl.

C-Cl Oxidative Addition and C-C Reductive Elimination Reactions in the Context of the Rhodium-Promoted Direct Arylation

A cycle of stoichiometric elemental reactions defining the direct arylation promoted by a redox-pair Rh(I)-Rh(III) is reported. Starting from the rhodium(I)-aryl complex RhPh{κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (xant(PiPr2)2 = 9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(diisopropylphosphino)xanthene), the reactions include C-Cl oxidative addition of organic chlorides, halide abstraction from the resulting six-coordinate rhodium(III) derivatives, C-C reductive coupling between the initial aryl ligand and the added organic group, oxidative addition of a C-H bond of a new arene, and deprotonation of the generated hydride-rhodium(III)-aryl species to form a new rhodium(I)-aryl derivative. In this context, the kinetics of the oxidative additions of 2-chloropyridine, chlorobenzene, benzyl chloride, and dichloromethane to RhPh{κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} and the C-C reductive eliminations of biphenyl and benzylbenzene from [RhPh2{κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]}]BF4 and [RhPh(CH2Ph){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]}]BF4, respectively, have been studied. The oxidative additions generally involve the cis addition of the C-Cl bond of the organic chloride to the rhodium(I) complex, being kinetically controlled by the C-Cl bond dissociation energy; the weakest C-Cl bond is faster added. The C-C reductive elimination is kinetically governed by the dissociation energy of the formed bond. The C(sp3)-C(sp2) coupling to give benzylbenzene is faster than the C(sp2)-C(sp2) bond formation to afford biphenyl. In spite of that a most demanding orientation requirement is needed for the C(sp3)-C(sp2) coupling than for the C(sp2)-C(sp2) bond formation, the energetic effort for the pregeneration of the C(sp3)-C(sp2) bond is lower. As a result, the weakest C-C bond is formed faster.

Copper-Catalyzed Intermolecular Enantioselective Radical Oxidative C(sp3 )-H/C(sp)-H Cross-Coupling with Rationally Designed Oxazoline-Derived N,N,P(O)-Ligands

The intermolecular asymmetric radical oxidative C(sp³ )-C(sp) cross-coupling of C(sp³ )-H bonds with readily available terminal alkynes is a promising method to forge chiral C(sp³ )-C(sp) bonds because of the high atom and step economy, but remains underexplored. Here, we report a copper-catalyzed asymmetric C(sp³ )-C(sp) cross-coupling of (hetero)benzylic and (cyclic)allylic C-H bonds with terminal alkynes that occurs with high to excellent enantioselectivity. Critical to the success is the rational design of chiral oxazoline-derived N,N,P(O)-ligands that not only tolerate the strong oxidative conditions which are requisite for intermolecular hydrogen atom abstraction (HAA) processes but also induce the challenging enantiocontrol. Direct access to a range of synthetically useful chiral benzylic alkynes and 1,4-enynes, high site-selectivity among similar C(sp³ )-H bonds, and facile synthesis of enantioenriched medicinally relevant compounds make this approach very attractive.

Alumination of aryl methyl ethers: switching between sp2 and sp3 C-O bond functionalisation with Pd-catalysis

The reaction of [{(ArNCMe)₂CH}Al] (Ar = 2,6-di-iso-propylphenyl) with aryl methyl ethers proceeded with alumination of the sp³ C-O bond. The selectivity of this reaction could be switched by inclusion of a catalyst. In the presence of [Pd(PCy₃)₂], chemoselective sp² C-O bond functionalisation was observed. Kinetic isotope experiments and DFT calculations support a catalytic pathway involving the ligand-assisted oxidative addition of the sp² C-O bond to a Pd-Al intermetallic complex.

Platinum Indolylphosphine Fluorido and Polyfluorido Complexes: An Interplay between Cyclometallation, Fluoride Migration, and Hydrogen Bonding

The reaction of [PtCl2 (COD)] (COD=1,5-cyclooctadiene) with diisopropyl-2-(3-methyl)indolylphosphine (iPr2 P(C9 H8 N)) led to the formation of the platinum(ii) chlorido complexes, cis-[PtCl2 {iPr2 P(C9 H8 N)}2 ] (1) and trans-[PtCl2 {iPr2 P(C9 H8 N)}2 ] (2). The cis-complex 1 reacted with NEt3 yielding the complex cis-[PtCl{κ2 -(P,N)-iPr2 P(C9 H7 N)}{iPr2 P(C9 H8 N)}] (3) bearing a cyclometalated κ2 -(P,N)-phosphine ligand, while the isomer 2 with a trans-configuration did not show any reactivity towards NEt3 . Treatment of 1 or 3 with (CH3 )4 NF (TMAF) resulted in the formation of the twofold cyclometalated complex cis-[Pt{κ2 -(P,N)-iPr2 P(C9 H7 N)}2 ] (4). The molecular structures of the complexes 1-4 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The fluorido complex cis-[PtF{κ2 -(P,N)-iPr2 P(C9 H7 N)}{iPr2 P(C9 H8 N)}] ⋅ (HF)4 (5 ⋅ (HF)4 ) was formed when complex 4 was treated with different hydrogen fluoride sources. The Pt(ii) fluorido complex 5 ⋅ (HF)4 exhibits intramolecular hydrogen bonding in its outer coordination sphere between the fluorido ligand and the NH group of the 3-methylindolyl moiety. In contrast to its chlorido analogue 3, complex 5 ⋅ (HF)4 reacted with CO or the ynamide 1-(2-phenylethynyl)-2-pyrrolidinone to yield the complexes trans-[Pt(CO){κ2 -(P,C)-iPr2 P(C9 H7 NCO)}{iPr2 P(C9 H8 N)}][F(HF)4 ] (7) and a complex, which we suggest to be cis-[Pt{C=C(Ph)OCN(C3 H6 )}{κ2 -(P,N)-iPr2 P(C9 H7 N)}{iPr2 P(C9 H8 N)}][F(HF)4 ] (9), respectively. The structure of 9 was assigned on the basis of DFT calculations as well as NMR and IR data. Hydrogen bonding of HF and NH to fluoride was proven to be crucial for the existence of 7 and 9.

Three-Coordinate Pd(0) with Rare-Earth Metalloligands: Synergetic CO Activation and Double P-C Bond Cleavage-Formation Reactions

Metalation of β-diketiminato rare-earth metal complexes L^nacnacLn(PhNCH₂PPh₂)₂ (Ln = Y, Yb, Lu) with (COD)Pd(CH₂SiMe₃)₂ afforded three-coordinate Pd(0) complexes supported by two sterically less bulky phosphines and a Pd → Ln dative interaction. The Pd(0) center is prone to ligation with isonitrile and CO; in the latter case, the insertion of a second CO with the Y-N bond was assisted via a precoordination of CO on the Pd(0) center, which led to the formation of an anionic Pd(0) carbamoyl. The reaction of the Pd-Y complex with iodobenzene showed a remarkable double P-C bond cleavage-formation pathway within the heterobimetallic Pd-Y core to afford (Ph₃P)₂PdI(Ph), imine PhNCH₂, and a β-diketiminato yttrium diiodide. In the related reaction of L^nacnacY(PhNCH₂PPh₂)₂ with (Ph₃P)₂PdI(Ph), the P-C bond cleavage following with a N-C bond formation was observed. Computational studies revealed a synergetic bimetallic mechanism for these reactions.

Palladium-Catalysed C-H Bond Zincation of Arenes: Scope, Mechanism, and the Role of Heterometallic Intermediates

Catalytic methods that transform C-H bonds into C-X bonds are of paramount importance in synthesis. A particular focus has been the generation of organoboranes, organosilanes and organostannanes from simple hydrocarbons (X=B, Si, Sn). Despite the importance of organozinc compounds (X=Zn), their synthesis by the catalytic functionalisation of C-H bonds remains unknown. Herein, we show that a palladium catalyst and zinc hydride reagent can be used to transform C-H bonds into C-Zn bonds. The new catalytic C-H zincation protocol has been applied to a variety of arenes-including fluoroarenes, heteroarenes, and benzene-with high chemo- and regioselectivity. A mechanistic study shows that heterometallic Pd-Zn complexes play a key role in catalysis. The conclusions of this work are twofold; the first is that valuable organozinc compounds are finally accessible by catalytic C-H functionalisation, the second is that heterometallic complexes are intimately involved in bond-making and bond-breaking steps of C-H functionalisation.

Reactions of POP-pincer rhodium(I)-aryl complexes with small molecules: coordination flexibility of the ether diphosphine

Reactions of the aryl complexes Rh(aryl){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (1; aryl = 3,5-Me2C6H3 (a), C6H5 (b), 3,5-Cl2C6H3 (c), 3-FC6H4 (d); xant(PiPr2)2 = 9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis-(diisopropylphosphino)xanthene) with O2, CO, and MeO2CC≡CCO2Me have been performed. Under 1 atm of O2, the pentane solutions of complexes 1 afford the dinuclear peroxide derivatives [Rh(aryl){κ2-P,P-xant(PiPr2)2}]2(μ-O2)2 (2a–2d) as yellow solids. In solution, these species are unstable. In dichloromethane, at room temperature, they are transformed into the dioxygen adducts Rh(aryl)(η2-O2){κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (3a–3d), as a result of the rupture of the double peroxide bridge and the reduction of the metal center. Complex 3b decomposes in benzene, at 50 °C, to give diphosphine oxide, phenol, and biphenyl. Complexes 1 react with CO to give the square-planar mono carbonyl derivatives Rh(aryl)(CO){κ2-P,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (4a–4d), which under carbon monoxide atmosphere evolve to benzoyl species Rh{C(O)aryl}(CO){κ2-P,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (5a–5d), resulting from the migratory insertion of CO into the Rh-aryl bond and the coordination of a second CO molecule. The transformation is reversible; under vacuum, complexes 5 regenerate the precursors 4. The addition of the activated alkyne to complexes 1b and 1d initially leads to the π-alkyne intermediates Rh(aryl){η2-C(CO2Me)≡C(CO2Me)}{κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (6b, 6d), which evolve to the alkenyl derivatives Rh{(E)-C(CO2Me)=C(CO2Me)aryl}{κ3-P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2)2]} (7b, 7d). The diphosphine adapts its coordination mode to the stability requirements of the different complexes, coordinating cis-κ2-P,P in complexes 2, fac-κ3-P,O,P in compounds 3, trans-κ2-P,P in the mono carbonyl derivatives 4 and 5, and mer-κ3-P,O,P in products 6 and 7.

Probing the Origin of Adaptive Aromaticity in 16-Valence-Electron Metallapentalenes

Species with adaptive aromaticity are aromatic in the ground and lowest-lying triplet excited states and they have normally intermediate singlet-triplet gaps. Few examples of compounds with adaptive aromaticity are known to date, including 16-valence-electron (16e) metallapentalenes. A sweeping search could be conducted to discover new members of this group, but efficient designs with an explicit strategy would facilitate the quest for new members of this elusive family. Density functional theory calculations and aromaticity evaluations have been performed to reveal the nature of triplet-state aromaticity in 16e metallapentalenes. Our results show that coordination of strong σ- or π-donor ligands helps achieving adaptive aromaticity of 16e metallapentalenes by means of a spin delocalization mechanism. These results have important implications for understanding the unusual properties of the organometallic adaptive aromatics, leading the way to efficient design of new compounds with tunable singlet-triplet gaps.

Rhodium-Catalyzed Synthesis of Organosulfur Compounds Involving S-S Bond Cleavage of Disulfides and Sulfur

Organosulfur compounds are widely used for the manufacture of drugs and materials, and their synthesis in general conventionally employs nucleophilic substitution reactions of thiolate anions formed from thiols and bases. To synthesize advanced functional organosulfur compounds, development of novel synthetic methods is an important task. We have been studying the synthesis of organosulfur compounds by transition-metal catalysis using disulfides and sulfur, which are easier to handle and less odiferous than thiols. In this article, we describe our development that rhodium complexes efficiently catalyze the cleavage of S-S bonds and transfer organothio groups to organic compounds, which provide diverse organosulfur compounds. The synthesis does not require use of bases or organometallic reagents; furthermore, it is reversible, involving chemical equilibria and interconversion reactions.

DFT modelling of a diphosphane - N-heterocyclic carbene-Rh(i) pincer complex rearrangement: a computational evaluation of the electronic effects in C-P bond activation

DFT calculations confirmed that the rearrangement of a PCP-Rh-H pincer to a CCP-Rh-phosphane pincer occured by C-P oxidative addition (ΔG^‡ = 29.5 kcal mol^-1, rate-determining step), followed by P-H reductive elimination (ΔG^‡ = 4.8 kcal mol^-1). The oxidative addition proceeded via a 3-centered transition state and is accelerated by electron-withdrawing substituents p- to the reacting C-P bond, resulting in a reaction constant (ρ) of 2.12 for ΔG^‡ and 2.76 for ΔH^‡ in a Hammett-type linear free energy relationship. AIM wavefunction analyses indicated a decrease in the negative charge on the carbon bonded to Rh with a concomitant increase in the positive charge on the latter. The electronic density at the Rh-P bond critical point and the atomic charge on Rh correlate well with the Hammett constants (σ) of the p-substituents. The replacement of the Rh-bound hydride with other anions (CH₃, Ph, t-Bu, OH, F, Cl, and CN) results in a decrease in the OA barrier only for CH₃, which is in accordance with the experimental results. The reductive elimination occurs via a 3-centered (Rh, H, P) transition state, which adopts a conformation wherein the steric clash between the i-Pr groups is minimized, followed by recomplexation of Rh and the newly formed (i-Pr)₂PH by a conformational twist around the Rh-P axis.

Organometallic chemistry using partially fluorinated benzenes

Fluorobenzenes, in particular fluorobenzene (FB) and 1,2-difluorobenzene (1,2-DiFB), are versatile solvents for conducting organometallic chemistry and transition-metal-based catalysis.

Constructing a Catalytic Cycle for C-F to C-X (X = O, S, N) Bond Transformation Based on Gold-Mediated Ligand Nucleophilic Attack

A tricoordinated gold(I) chloride complex, tBuXantphosAuCl, supported by a sterically bulky 9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(di-tert-butylphosphino)xanthene ligand (tBuXantphos) was synthesized. This complex features a remarkably longer Au-Cl bond length [2.632(1) Å] than bicoordinated linear gold complexes (2.27-2.30 Å) and tricoordinated XantphosAuCl [2.462(1) Å]. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of a cocrystal of tBuXantphosAuCl and pentafluoronitrobenzene (PFNB) and UV-vis spectroscopic titration experiments revealed the existence of an anion-π interaction between the Cl anion ligand and PFNB. Stoichiometric reaction between PFNB and tBuXantphosAuOtBu, after replacement of Cl by a more nucleophilic tBuO anion ligand, showed higher reactivity and para selectivity in the transformation of C-F to C-OtBu bond, distinctively different from that when only KOtBu was used (ortho selectivity) under the identical condition. Mechanistic studies including density functional theory calculations suggested a gold-mediated nucleophilic ligand attack of the C-F bond pathway via an SNAr process. On the basis of these results, using trimethylsilyl derivatives TMS-X (X = OMe, SEt, NEt2) as the nucleophilic ligand source and the fluorine acceptor, catalytic transformation of the C-F bond of aromatic substrates to the C-X (X = O, S, N) bond was achieved with tBuXantphosAuCl as the catalyst (up to 20 turnover numbers).

R/X exchange reactions in cis-[M(R)2{P(X)(NMeCH2)2}2] (M = Pd, Pt), via a phosphenium intermediate

R/X exchange reactions in cis-[M(R)₂{P(X)(NMeCH₂)₂}₂] (M = Pd, Pt; R = aryl, alkyl; X = Cl, Br) were achieved for the first time to give cis-[M(X)₂{P(R)(NMeCH₂)₂}₂]. DFT calculations suggested that the exchange reaction proceeds via a phosphenium intermediate.

Synthesis and reductive elimination of arylPd(ii) trifluoromethyl complexes: a remarkable concentration effect on chemoselectivity

A remarkable and unprecedented concentration effect on chemoselectivity is observed for the thermal decomposition of Pd(ii) aryl trifluoromethyl complexes. As the concentration increases, the Ar–CF₃ cross-coupling is suppressed gradually whilst the Ar–Ar homocoupling increases steadily.

Stoichiometric and catalytic C–F bond activation by the trans-dihydride NHC complex [Ru(IEt2Me2)2(PPh3)2H2] (IEt2Me2= 1,3-diethyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene)

Multiple catalytic hydrodefluorination steps take place with thetrans-dihydride complex [Ru(IEt₂Me₂)₂(PPh₃)₂H₂] (1), taking C₆F₆to tri-, di- and mono-fluorobenzenes.

Hydrofluorination of Alkynes Catalysed by Gold Bifluorides

We report the synthesis of nine new N-heterocyclic carbene gold bifluoride complexes starting from the corresponding N-heterocyclic carbene gold hydroxides. A new methodology to access N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene gold(I) fluoride starting from N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene gold(I) hydroxide and readily available potassium bifluoride is also reported. These gold bifluorides were shown to be efficient catalysts in the hydrofluorination of symmetrical and unsymmetrical alkynes, thus affording fluorinated stilbene analogues and fluorovinyl thioethers in good to excellent yields with high stereo- and regioselectivity. The method is exploited further to access a fluorinated combretastatin analogue selectively in two steps starting from commercially available reagents.

The mechanism, electronic and ligand effects for reductive elimination from arylPd(ii) trifluoromethyl complexes: a systematic DFT study

Detailed reaction mechanisms and ligand effects have been studied for reductive elimination of Ar–CF₃ from Pd(ii) centers.

Fluoride, bifluoride and trifluoromethyl complexes of iridium(i) and rhodium(i)

New methods for the preparation of a range of NHC-based Ir(i) and Rh(i) fluoride, bifluoride and trifluoromethyl complexes are reported.
