Purely Heterometallic Lanthanide(III) Macrocycles through Controlled Assembly of Disulfide Bonds for Dual Color Emission

Programming heterometallic 4f-4f' helicates under thermodynamic control: the circle is complete

Three non-symmetrical segmental ligand strands L4 can be wrapped around a linear sequence of one Zn2+ and two trivalent lanthanide cations Ln3+ to give quantitatively directional [ZnLn2(L4)3]8+ triple-stranded helicates in the solid state and in solution. NMR speciations in CD3CN show negligible decomplexation at a millimolar concentration and the latter helicate can be thus safely considered as a preorganized C3-symmetrical HHH-[(L43Zn)(LnA)(2-n)(LnB)n]8+ platform in which the thermodynamic properties of (i) lanthanide permutation between the central N9 and the terminal N6O3 binding sites and (ii) exchange processes between homo- and heterolanthanide helicates are easy to access (Ln = La, Eu, Lu). Deviations from statistical distributions could be programmed by exploiting specific site recognition and intermetallic pair interactions. Considering the challenging La3+ : Eu3+ ionic pair, for which the sizes of the two cations differ by only 8%, a remarkable excess (70%) of the heterolanthanide is produced, together with a preference for the formation of the isomer where the largest lanthanum cation lies in the central N9 site ([(La)(Eu)] : [(Eu)(La)] = 9 : 1). This rare design and its rational programming pave the way for the preparation of directional light-converters and/or molecular Q-bits at the (supra)molecular level.

Distributive Nd-to-Yb Energy Transfer within Pure [YbNdYb] Heterometallic Molecules

Facile access to site-selective hetero-lanthanide molecules will open new avenues in the search of novel photophysical phenomena based on Ln-to-Ln' energy transfer (ET). This challenge demands strategies to segregate efficiently different Ln metal ions among different positions in a molecule. We report here the one-step synthesis and structure of a pure [YbNdYb] (1) coordination complex featuring short Yb···Nd distances, ideal to investigate a potential distributive (i.e., from one donor to two acceptors) intramolecular ET from one Nd³⁺ ion to two Yb³⁺ centers within a well-characterized molecule. The difference in ionic radius is the mechanism allowing to allocate selectively both types of metal ion within the molecular structure, exploited with the simultaneous use of two β-diketone-type ligands. To assist the photophysical investigation of this heterometallic species, the analogues [YbLaYb] (2) and [LuNdLu] (3) have also been prepared. Sensitization of Yb³⁺ and Nd³⁺ in the last two complexes, respectively, was observed, with remarkably long decay times, facilitating the determination of the Nd-to-Yb ET within the [YbNdYb] composite. This ET was demonstrated by comparing the emission of iso-absorbant solutions of 1, 2, and 3 and through lifetime determinations in solution and solid state. The comparatively high efficiency of this process corroborates the facilitating effect of having two acceptors for the nonradiative decay of Nd³⁺ created within the [YbNdYb] molecule.

Size Selectivity in Heterolanthanide Molecular Complexes with a Ditopic Ligand

The similar reactivity of lanthanides generally leads to statistically populated polynuclear complexes, making the rational design of ordered hetero-lanthanide compounds extremely challenging. Here we report on the site selectivity in hetero-lanthanide tetranuclear complexes afforded by the relatively simple ditopic pyterpyNO ligand (4'-(4-pyridil)-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine N-oxide). The sequential room temperature reaction of RE2 (tta)6 (pyterpyNO)2 (where RE=Y, (1); Eu, (2), Dy, (3) Htta=2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone) with La(tta)3 dme (dme=dimethoxyethane) yielded Y2 La2 (tta)12 (pyterpyNO)2 (4), Dy2 La2 (tta)12 (pyterpyNO)2 (5) and Eu2 La2 (tta)12 (pyterpyNO)2 (6). Single crystals X-ray diffraction studies showed that 4, 5 and 6 are isostructural, featuring a tetranuclear structure with two different metal coordination sites with coordination numbers 8 (CN8) and 9 (CN9). The two smaller cations are mainly bridged by the O-donor atoms of the NO groups of two pyterpyNO ligands (CN8), while the larger lanthanum centres are bound by a terpyridine unit (CN9). Size selectivity has been studied with structural and magnetic studies in the solid state and through 19 F NMR and photoluminescence studies in solution, showing a direct dependence on the difference of ionic radii of the ions and yielding a 91 % selectivity for 4. Furthermore, 19 F NMR, X-ray and PL studies pointed out that the nature of the product is independent from the synthetic route for compound Eu2 Y2 (tta)12 (pyterpyNO)2 (7), keeping the ion selectivity also for a self-assembly reaction. Unexpectedly, these studies have evidenced that selectivity is not exclusively governed by electrostatic interactions related to size dimensions.

Differentiable Formation of Chiroptical Lanthanide Heterometallic Lnn Ln'4-n (L6 ) (n=0-4) Tetrahedra with C2 -Symmetrical Bis(tridentate) Ligands

Construction of lanthanide heterometallic complex is important for engineering multifunction molecular containers. However, it remains a challenge because of the similar ionic radii of lanthanides. Herein we attempt to prepare chiral lanthanide heterometallic tetrahedra. Upon crystallization with a mixture of [Eu2 L3 ] and [Ln2 L3 ] (Ln=Gd, Tb and Dy) helicates, a mixture of heterometallic Eun Ln'4-n (L6 ) (n=0-4) tetrahedra was prepared. Selective formation of heterometallic tetrahedron was observed as MS deconvolution results deviated from statistical results. The formation of heterometallic tetrahedron was found to be sensitive to ionic radii as well as the ratio of the two helicates used in the crystallization.

Luminescent lanthanide(III) complexes of DTPA-bis(amido-phenyl-terpyridine) for bioimaging and phototherapeutic applications

We report here a series of coordinatively-saturated and thermodynamically stable luminescent [Ln(dtntp)(H₂O)] [Ln(III) = Eu (1), Tb (2), Gd (3), Sm (4) and Dy (5)] complexes using an aminophenyl-terpyridine appended-DTPA (dtntp) chelating ligand as cell imaging and photocytotoxic agents. The N,N″-bisamide derivative of H₅DTPA named as dtntp is based on 4'-(4-aminophenyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine conjugated to diethylenetriamine-N,N',N″-pentaacetic acid. The structure, physicochemical properties, detailed photophysical aspects, interaction with DNA and serum proteins, and photocytotoxicity were studied. The intrinsic luminescence of Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes due to f → f transitions used to evaluate their cellular uptake and distribution in cancer cells. The solid-state structure of [Eu(dtntp)(DMF)] (1·DMF) shows a discrete mononuclear molecule with nine-coordinated {EuN₃O₆} distorted tricapped-trigonal prism (TTP) coordination geometry around the Eu(III). The {EuN₃O₆} core results from three nitrogen atoms and three carboxylate oxygen atoms, and two carbonyl oxygen atoms of the amide groups of dtntp ligand. The ninth coordination site is occupied by an oxygen atom of DMF as a solvent from crystallization. The designed probes have two aromatic pendant phenyl-terpyridine (Ph-tpy) moieties as photo-sensitizing antennae to impart the desirable optical properties for cellular imaging and photocytotoxicity. The photostability, coordinative saturation, and energetically rightly poised triplet states of dtntp ligand allow the efficient energy transfer (ET) from Ph-tpy to the emissive excited states of the Eu(III)/Tb(III), makes them luminescent cellular imaging probes. The Ln(III) complexes show significant binding tendency to DNA (K ~ 10⁴ M^-1), and serum proteins (BSA and HSA) (K ~ 10⁵ M^-1). The luminescent Eu(III) (1) and Tb(III) (2) complexes were utilized for cellular internalization and cytotoxicity studies due to their optimal photophysical properties. The cellular uptake studies using fluorescence imaging displayed intracellular (cytosolic and nuclear) localization in cancer cells. The complexes 1 and 2 displayed significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cells. These results offer a modular design strategy with further scope to utilize appended N,N,N-donor tpy moiety for developing light-responsive luminescent Ln(III) bioprobes for theranostic applications.

Formation of Heteropolynuclear Lanthanide Complexes Using Macrocyclic Phosphonated Cyclam-Based Ligands

Ligands L₁ and L₂, respectively based on a cyclam and a cross-bridged cyclam scaffold functionalized at N1 and N8 by 6-phosphonic-2-methylene pyridyl groups, are described. While complexation of lanthanide (Ln) cations with L₂ was not possible, a family of complexes has been prepared with L₁, of the general formulae [LnL₁H₂]Cl (Ln³⁺ = Lu, Tb, Yb) or [LnL₁H] (Ln³⁺ = Eu). The solution, structural, potentiometric, and photophysical data for these novel ligands and their complexes have been investigated, including a solid-state study by X-ray diffraction (L₁, L₂, and [EuL₁H]), ¹H NMR complexation investigations (Lu³⁺), as well as UV-vis absorption and luminescence spectroscopy in water and D₂O (pH ≈ 7). L₁ forms 1:1 metal-ligand stoichiometric octadentate complexes in solution. Importantly, the pyridyl phosphonate functions are capable of simultaneous chelation to the metal center and of interaction with a second metal center. ¹H NMR (Lu³⁺) and spectrophotometric titrations of the isolated [TbL₁]^- complex by EuCl₃ salts demonstrated the formation of high-order (hetero)polymetallic species in aqueous solution (H₂O, pH = 7). Global analysis of the luminescence titration experiment points to the formation of 4:1, 3:1, and 3:2 [TbL₁]/Eu heteropolynuclear assemblies, exhibiting a strong preference to forming [TbL₁]₃Eu₂ at increased europium concentrations, with energy transfer occurring between the kinetically inert terbium complex and added europium cations.

Luminescent EuIIIand TbIIIbimetallic complexes of N,N′-heterocyclic bases and tolfenamic acid: structures, photophysical aspects and biological activity

The isostructural bimetallic luminescent Eu^IIIand Tb^IIIdimers containing N,N′-heterocyclic bases and tolfenamic acid as a bridging ligands were evaluated for their structures, cellular imaging capability and photocytotoxicity.

Chirality transfer between hexaazamacrocycles in heterodinuclear rare earth complexes

Both the chiral hexaazamacrocyle L1 based on trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane and the achiral hexaazamacrocyle L2 based on ethylenediamine form lanthanide(iii) dinuclear μ-hydroxo bridged complexes which have been characterized by NMR and CD spectroscopy. The homodinuclear complexes of the type [Ln₂(L1)₂(μ-OH)₂](NO₃)₄ (Ln = Nd^III, Eu^III, Tb^III and Yb^III) have been synthesized in the enantiopure form and the X-ray crystal structures of Nd^III, Eu^III and Yb^III derivatives have been determined. The heterodinuclear cationic complexes [Ln(L1)Ln'(L2)(μ-OH)₂X₂]ⁿ⁺ have been generated and characterized in solution by using the mononuclear complexes of L1 and L2 as substrates. While the formation of [LnLn'(L1)₂(μ-OH)₂X₂]ⁿ⁺ dinuclear complexes is accompanied by chiral narcissistic self-sorting, the formation of [Ln(L1)Ln'(L2)(μ-OH)₂X₂]ⁿ⁺ dinuclear complexes is accompanied by the sizable sociable self-sorting of macrocyclic units. The homodinuclear complexes [Y₂(L1)₂(μ-OH)₂X₂]ⁿ⁺ and [Ln₂(L2)₂(μ-OH)₂X₂]ⁿ⁺ (Ln = Dy^III, Pr^III and Nd^III) are CD silent in the visible region due to the lack of f-f transitions and the presence of an achiral ligand, respectively. In contrast, the heterodinuclear [Y(L1^S)Ln(L2)(μ-OH)₂X₂]ⁿ⁺ complexes give rise to CD signals arising from the f-f transitions because of the chirality transfer from the L1 macrocyclic unit to the L2 macrocyclic unit.

Excitation Energy-Transfer Processes in the Sensitization Luminescence of Europium in a Highly Luminescent Complex

The excitation energy transfer (EET) pathways in the sensitization luminescence of EuIII and the excitation energy migration between the different ligands in [Eu(fod)3dpbt] [where fod=6,6,7,7,8,8,8-heptafluoro-2,2-dimethyl-3,5-octanedione and dpbt=2-(N,N-diethylanilin-4-yl)-4,6-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)-1,3,5-triazine], exhibiting well-separated fluorescence excitation and phosphorescence bands of the different ligands, were investigated by using time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy for the first time. The data clearly revealed that upon the excitation of dpbt, the sensitization luminescence of EuIII in [Eu(fod)3dpbt] was dominated by the singlet EET pathway, whereas the triplet EET pathway involving T1(dpbt) was inefficient. The energy migration from T1(dpbt) to T1(fod) in [Eu(fod)3dpbt] was not observed. Moreover, upon the excitation of fod, a singlet EET pathway for the sensitization of EuIII luminescence, including the energy migration from S1(fod) to S1(dpbt) was revealed, in addition to the triplet EET pathway involving T1(fod). Under the excitation of dpbt at 410 nm, [Eu(fod)3dpbt] exhibited an absolute quantum yield for EuIII luminescence of 0.59 at 298 K. This work provides a solid and elegant example for the concept that singlet EET pathway could dominate the sensitization luminescence of EuIII in some complexes.

Tailored homo- and hetero- lanthanide porphyrin dimers: a synthetic strategy for integrating multiple spintronic functionalities into a single molecule

We present the design, synthesis and magnetic properties of molecular magnetic systems that contain all elements necessary for spin-valve control in molecular spintronic devices in a single molecule. We investigate the static and dynamic magnetic properties and quantum spin properties of butadiyne-linked homo- and hetero-nuclear lanthanide-porphyrin dimers. A heterometallated porphyrin dimer containing both Tb^III and Dy^III centres is created rationally by the stepwise oxidative homocoupling of distinct lanthanide-porphyrin monomers. Tb^III and Dy^III mononuclear porphyrin complexes, homodimers and heterodimers all exhibit slow magnetic relaxation below 10 kelvin under a static magnetic field. The coherence times for Gd^III porphyrin monomers and dimers are found to be in excess of 3.0 μs at 2 K, allowing distinct magnetic manipulations in low temperature transport experiments.

Selective Lanthanide Distribution within a Comprehensive Series of Heterometallic [LnPr] Complexes

The preparation of heterometallic, lanthanide-only complexes is an extremely difficult synthetic challenge. By a ligand-based strategy, a complete isostructural series of dinuclear heterometallic [LnPr] complexes has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The two different coordination sites featured in this molecular entity allow study of the preferences of the praseodymium ion for a specific position depending on the ionic radii of the accompanying lanthanide partner. The purity of each heterometallic moiety has been evaluated in the solid state and in solution by means of crystallographic and spectrometric methods, respectively, revealing the limits of this strategy for ions with similar sizes. DFT calculations have been carried out to support the experimental results, confirming the nature of the site-selective lanthanide distribution. The predictable selectivity of this system has been exploited to assess the magnetic properties of the [DyPr] and [LuPr] derivatives, showing that the origin of the slow dynamics observed in the former arises from the dysprosium ion.

Dinuclear Lanthanide(III)-m-ODO2A-dimer Macrocyclic Complexes: Solution Speciation, DFT Calculations, Luminescence Properties, and Promoted Nitrophenyl-Phosphate Hydrolysis Rates

Potentiometric speciation studies, mass spectrometry, and DFT calculations helped to predict the various structural possibilities of the dinuclear trivalent lanthanide ion (Ln^III , Ln=La, Eu, Tb, Yb, Y) complexes of a novel macrocyclic ligand, m-ODO2A-dimer (H₄ L), to correlate with their luminescence properties and the promoted BNPP and HPNP phosphodiester bond hydrolysis reaction rates. The stability constants of the dinuclear Ln₂ (m-ODO2A-dimer) complexes and various hydrolytic species confirmed by mass spectrometry were determined. DFT calculations revealed that the Y₂ LH_-1 and the Y₂ LH_-2 species tended to form structures with the respective closed- and open-form conformations. Luminescence lifetime data for the heterodimetallic TbEuL system confirmed the fluorescence resonance energy transfer from the Tb^III to Eu^III ion. The internuclear distance R_TbEu values were estimated to be in the range of 9.4-11.3 Å (pH 6.7-10.6), which were comparable to those of the DFT calculated open-form conformations. Multiple linear regression analysis of the k_obs data was performed using the equation: k_obs,corr. =k_obs -k_obs,OH =kLn2LHM->1 [Ln₂ LH_-1 ]+kLn2LH-2 [Ln₂ LH_-2 ] for the observed Ln₂ L-promoted BNPP/HPNP hydrolysis reactions in solution pH from 7 to 10.5 (Ln=Eu, Yb). The results showed that the second-order rate constants for the Eu₂ LH_-2 and Yb₂ LH_-2 species were about 50-400 times more reactive than the structural analogous Zn₂ (m-12 N₃ O-dimer) system.

Energy Transfer in Supramolecular Heteronuclear Lanthanide Dimers and Application to Fluoride Sensing in Water

In the presence of fluoride anions, [LnL(H₂ O)]⁺ complexes, based on the coordination of a lanthanide (Ln) cation into the cavity of a C_2v symmetrical cyclen-based ligand (L), self-assemble in water to form [(LnL)₂ F]⁺ dimers. The crystal structures of the Yb hydrated monomer and of the fluorinated dimer are reported and analyzed to unravel the impact of the cumulative effect of weak hydrogen bonding and aromatic stacking interactions in the supramolecular assembly. The assembly is stable over a broad range of pH 3-8. A combination of equimolar amounts of Eu and Tb complexes led to a quasistatistical mixture of homo- and heterodimers, as observed by using electrospray mass spectrometry. In the heterodimers, selective excitation into the ⁷ F₆ →⁵ D₄ absorption band of the Tb center at λ=488 nm allowed the observation of a Tb-to-Eu downshifting energy transfer, not observed in the absence of fluoride ions. Analysis of the excited-state lifetimes of the dimers within the frame of the Förster theory of energy transfer showed the transfer to have an efficiency of 34 %, with a corresponding Förster radius of 4.1 Å; thereby, unraveling the short Ln-Ln distance as a crucial parameter of the energy-transfer process. By using equimolar mixtures of the Tb and Eu complexes, the energy-transfer phenomenon was used for a ratiometric sensing of fluoride anions in water with a detection limit of 17.7 nm.

Mixed-Lanthanide Porous Coordination Polymers Showing Range-Tunable Ratiometric Luminescence for O2 Sensing

Luminescent porous coordination polymers (PCPs) are emerging as attractive oxygen-sensing materials, but they are mostly based on single-wavelength luminometry. Here, we report a special mixed-lanthanide strategy for self-referenced ratiometric oxygen sensing. A series of isostructural, pure-lanthanide, or mixed-lanthanide PCPs, MCF-53(Tb/Eu_x), were synthesized by solvothermal reactions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that MCF-53(Tb/Eu_x) is composed of complicated two-dimensional coordination networks, which interdigitate to form a three-dimensional supramolecular structure retaining one-dimensional ultra-micropores. MCF-53(Tb/Eu_x) can undergo multiple single-crystal to single-crystal structural transformations upon desorption/adsorption of coordinative and lattice guest molecules, and the lanthanide metal ions are partially exposed on the pore surface at the guest-free state. Tb(III) ions are not luminescent and only act as separators between Eu(III) ions, and the Tb(III)/Eu(III) mixing ratio can tune the relative emission intensities, luminescence lifetimes of the Eu(III) phosphorescence, and the ligand fluorescence, giving rise to not only ratiometric photoluminescence oxygen sensing but also tunable emission-color-changing ranges.

High magnetic relaxivity in a fluorescent CdSe/CdS/ZnS quantum dot functionalized with MRI contrast molecules

Expanding the Versatility of Dipicolinate-Based Luminescent Lanthanide Complexes: A Fast Method for Antenna Testing

A dipicolinate (dpa)-based platform for the rapid testing of potential lanthanide-sensitizing antennae was developed; 4-methyl-7-O-alkylcoumarin-appended dpa could sensitize four lanthanides. The platform could be used to estimate the photophysical properties of a more difficult-to-prepare 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7-triacetic acid based structure carrying the same antenna.

Switchable sensitizers stepwise lighting up lanthanide emissions

Analagous to a long-ranged rocket equipped with multi-stage engines, a luminescent compound with consistent emission signals across a large range of concentrations from two stages of sensitizers can be designed. In this approach, ACQ, aggregation-caused quenching effect of sensitizers, would stimulate lanthanide emission below 10⁻⁴ M, and then at concentrations higher than 10⁻³ M, the “aggregation-induced emission” (AIE) effect of luminophores would be activated with the next set of sensitizers for lanthanide emission. Simultaneously, the concentration of the molecules could be monitored digitally by the maximal excitation wavelengths, due to the good linear relationship between the maximal excitation wavelengths and the concentrations {lg(M)}. This model, wherein molecules are assembled with two stages (both AIE and ACQ effect) of sensitizers, may provide a practicable strategy for design and construction of smart lanthanide bioprobes, which are suitable in complicated bioassay systems in which concentration is variable.

Tailoring functionality through synthetic strategy in heterolanthanide assemblies

Three classes of heterolanthanide assemblies, multi-dimensional frameworks (A), discrete polynuclear molecules (B) and preformed coordinated units connected by a linker (C), are discussed. Potential functionalities arising from the distance-dependent coexistence or interplay of the physical properties are pointed out.

Multiplex detection of enzymatic activity with responsive lanthanide-based luminescent probes

Multiplex analyte detection in complex dynamic systems is desirable for the investigation of cellular communication networks as well as in medical diagnostics. A family of lanthanide-based responsive luminescent probes for multiplex detection is reported. The high modularity of the probe design enabled the rapid assembly of both green and red emitters for a large variety of analytes by the simple exchange of the lanthanide or an analyte-cleavable caging group, respectively. The real-time three-color detection of up to three analytes was demonstrated, thus setting the stage for the non-invasive investigation of interconnected biological processes.

Photoluminescent 3D lanthanide MOFs with a rare (10,3)-d net based on a new tripodal organic linker

Isomorphous Ln-MOFs with a rare (10,3)-d network were assembled from a dual functional ligand which sensitizes Ln-based luminescence, achieving high quantum yield for Tb-MOF.
