Stoichiometric Self-Assembly of Shape-Persistent 2D Complexes: A Facile Route to a Symmetric Supramacromolecular Spoked Wheel

Trace amounts of palladium catalysed the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction of deactivated and hindered aryl chlorides

Electron-rich and hindered aryl chlorides are the most challenging substrates in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling (SMC) reactions. Herein, we report a highly efficient catalytic system for the SMC reaction using trace amounts of commercially available catalysts [Pd(PPh3)4/(t-Bu)PCy2; Pd loading as low as 9.5 × 10-5 mol%]. This catalytic system can efficiently couple deactivated and sterically hindered aryl chlorides with various substituted phenylboronic acids, even in one-pot multiple coupling reactions (yield of products up to 92%). The impact of solvents on SMC reactions and the mechanisms of by-product formation in aryl boronic acid couplings are analyzed using density functional theory (DFT). Utilizing trace amounts of commercially available catalysts avoids complex synthesis, reduces costs, and minimizes metal residues.

Combining Multiple Photosensitizer Modules into One Supramolecular System for Synergetic Enhanced Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT), as an emerging cancer treatment, requires the development of highly desirable photosensitizers (PSs) with integrated functional groups to achieve enhanced therapeutic efficacy. Coordination-driven self-assembly (CDSA) would provide an alternative approach for combining multiple PSs synergistically. Here, we demonstrate a simple yet powerful strategy of combining conventional chromophores (tetraphenylethylene, porphyrin, or Zn-porphyrin) with pyridinium salt PSs together through condensation reactions, followed by CDSA to construct a series of novel metallo-supramolecular PSs (S1-S3). The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is dramatically enhanced by the direct combination of two different PSs, and further reinforced in the subsequent ensembles. Among all the ensembles, S2 with two porphyrin cores shows the highest ROS generation efficiency, specific interactions with lysosome, and strong emission for probing cells. Moreover, the cellular and living experiments confirm that S2 has excellent PDT efficacy, biocompatibility, and biosafety. As such, this study will enable the development of more efficient PSs with potential clinical applications.

Assembly of Six Types of Heteroleptic Pd2L4 Cages under Kinetic Control

Heteroleptic assemblies composed of several kinds of building blocks have been seen in nature. It is still unclear how natural systems design and create such complicated assemblies selectively. Past efforts on multicomponent self-assembly of artificial metal-organic cages have mainly focused on finding a suitable combination of building blocks to lead to a single multicomponent self-assembly as the thermodynamically most stable product. Here, we present another approach to selectively produce multicomponent Pd(II)-based self-assemblies under kinetic control based on the selective ligand exchanges of weak Pd-L coordination bonds retaining the original orientation of the metal centers in a kinetically stabilized cyclic structure and on local reversibility given in certain areas of the energy landscape in the presence of the assist molecule that facilitates error correction of coordination bonds. The kinetic approach enabled us to build all six types of Pd2L4 cages and heteroleptic tetranuclear cages composed of three kinds of ditopic ligands. Although the cage complexes thus obtained are metastable, they are stable for 1 month or more at room temperature.

Cobalt-Centered Supramolecular Nanoensemble for Regulated Aerobic Oxidation of Alcohols and "One-Pot" Synthesis of Quinazolin-4(3H)-ones

The supramolecular assemblies of the donor-acceptor (D-A) system Im-Tpy, having phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole as the donor and terpyridyl group as the acceptor unit, have been developed, which serve as supramolecular host to stabilize Co(II) in its nanoform. The as-prepared supramolecular nanoensemble Im-Tpy@Co in DMSO:water (7:3) shows high thermal stability and photostability. Even in the case of solvent mismatch, i.e., on dilution with cosolvent THF/DMSO, insignificant changes were observed in the size/morphology of the nanoensemble. The as-prepared Im-Tpy@Co nanoensemble in low catalytic loading (0.1 mol % of Co) catalyzes the oxidation of a wide variety of alcohols to aromatic aldehydes/ketones using visible light radiations as the source of energy without the need of any additive at room temperature. In comparison to already reported systems, the Im-Tpy@Co nanoensemble exhibits high turnover numbers (TONs) and turnover frequencies (TOFs). The practical application of the catalytic system has also been demonstrated in the gram-scale synthesis of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde. The Im-Tpy@Co nanoensemble exhibits recyclability up to four catalytic cycles with insignificant leaching and morphological changes. The present study also demonstrates the catalytic activity of the Im-Tpy@Co nanoensemble in "one-pot" synthesis of quinazolin-4(3H)-ones from 2-aminobenzamide and primary alcohols with better efficiency in comparison to other transition-metal-based catalytic systems.

Bi-directional geometric constraints in the construction of giant dual-rim nanorings

In the field of metallo-supramolecular assemblies, supramolecular macrocycles have attracted considerable attention due to their guest recognition and catalytic properties. Herein, we report a novel strategy for the construction of giant hollow macrocyclic structures using a bi-directional geometric constraint strategy. We investigated the structural design of two terpyridine-based tetratopic organic ligands, whose inner and outer rims have different angles. Compared to conventional strategies of self-assembly using single angular orientation building blocks that typically generate small macrocyclic objects or polymers, the mutual interaction between the different angles of the ligands could promote the formation of giant hollow macrocyclic supramolecular architectures. The self-assembly mechanism and hierarchical self-assembly of giant supramolecular macrocycles have been characterized by NMR, ESI-MS and TEM experiments. The strategy used in this study not only advances the design of giant 2D macrocycles with large inner diameters but also gives insights into the mechanism of formation of large structures.

Substituents make a difference: 6,6″-modified terpyridine complexes with helix configuration and enhanced emission

A series of complexes L22-M (L2: 6,6″-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine, M: Mn²⁺, Fe²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺) were synthesized by coordinating p-methoxyphenyl 6,6″-substituted terpyridine ligand with first-row transition metal ions and characterized by NMR, ESI-MS, and X-ray single crystal diffraction techniques. Single-crystal structures demonstrated that the steric hindrance of p-methoxyphenyl substituents endowed complexes L22-M with obvious longer coordination bond lengths and larger bond angles and dihedral angles compared with unmodified L12-M (L1: 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine). The chiral helix geometry was observed for L22-M, in which 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine moiety dramatically twisted to a spiral form in comparison to the nearly coplanar structure of the parent L12-M, resulting in plentiful intramolecular and intermolecular π-π interactions. Also, the appealing racemic (P and M) double helix packed structure for 6,6″-modified bisterpyridine complex L22-Cu was formed in the crystal. The consequent appealing charge transfer (CT) emission for L22-Zn in the solution and solid were investigated via UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. This work afforded a new method to achieve intriguing chiral geometry and CT optical properties via the subtle design and modification of terpyridine ligands.

Shape-Dependent Complementary Ditopic Terpyridine Pair with Two Levels of Self-Recognition for Coordination-Driven Self-Assembly

Molecular recognition in biological systems plays a vital role in the precise construction of biomacromolecules and the corresponding biological activities. Such recognition mainly relies on the highly specific binding of complementary molecular pairs with complementary sizes, shapes, and intermolecular forces. It still remains challenging to develop artificial complementary motif pairs for coordination-driven self-assembly. Herein, a series of shape-dependent complementary motif pairs, based on ditopic 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (TPY) backbone, are designed and synthesized. The fidelity degrees of self-assemblies from these motifs are carefully evaluated by multi-dimensional mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and molecular modeling. In addition, two levels of self-recognition in both homoleptic and heteroleptic assembly are discovered in the assembled system. Through finely tuning the shape and size of the ligands, a complementary pair is developed with error-free narcissistically self-sorting at two levels of self-recognition, and the intrinsic principle is carefully investigated.

Non-equilibrium Nanoassemblies Constructed by Confined Coordination on a Polymer Chain

Biological systems employ non-equilibrium self-assembly to create ordered nanoarchitectures with sophisticated functions. However, it is challenging to construct artificial non-equilibrium nanoassemblies due to lack of control over assembly dynamics and kinetics. Herein, we design a series of linear polymers with different side groups for further coordination-driven self-assembly based on shape-complementarity. Such a design introduces a main-chain confinement which effectively slows down the assembly process of side groups, thus allowing us to monitor the real-time evolution of lychee-like nanostructures. The function related to the non-equilibrium nature is further explored by performing photothermal conversion study. The ability to observe and capture non-equilibrium states in this supramolecular system will enhance our understanding of the thermodynamic and kinetic features as well as functions of living systems.

Guest-Driven Self-Assembly and Chiral Induction of Photofunctional Lanthanide Tetrahedral Cages

Chiral luminescent lanthanide-organic cages have many potential applications in enantioselective recognition, sensing, and asymmetric catalysis. However, due to the paucity of structures and their limited cavities, host-guest chemistry with lanthanide-organic cages has remained elusive so far. Herein, we report a guest-driven self-assembly and chiral induction approach for the construction of otherwise inaccessible Ln₄L₄-type (Ln = lanthanide ions, i.e., Eu^III, Tb^III; L = ligand) tetrahedral hosts. Single crystal analyses on a series of host-guest complexes reveal remarkable guest-adaptive cavity breathing on the tetrahedral cages, reflecting the advantage of the variation tolerance on coordination geometry of the f-elements. Meanwhile, noncovalent confinement of pyrene within the lanthanide cage not only leads to diminishment of its excimer emission but also facilitates guest to host energy transfer, opening up a new sensitization window for the lanthanide luminescence on the cage. Moreover, stereoselective self-assembly of either Λ₄- or Δ₄- type Eu₄L₄ cages has been realized via chiral induction with R/S-BINOL or R/S-SPOL templates, as confirmed by NMR, circular dichroism (CD), and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with high dissymmetry factors (g_lum) up to ±0.125.

Terpyridine-Based 3D Discrete Metallosupramolecular Architectures

Terpyridine (tpy)-based 3D discrete metallosupramolecular architectures, which are often inspired by polyhedral geometry and the biological structures found in nature, have drawn significant attention from the community of metallosupramolecular chemistry. Because of the linear tpy-M(II)-tpy connectivity, the creation of sophisticated 3D metallosupramolecules based on tpy remains a formidable synthetic challenge. Nevertheless, with recent advancement in ligand design and self-assembly, diverse 3D metallosupramolecular polyhedrons, such as Platonic solids, Archimedean solids, prims as well as Johnson solids, have been constructed and their potential applications have been explored. This review summarizes the progress on tpy-based discrete 3D metallosupramolecules, aiming to shed more light on the design and construction of novel discrete architectures with molecular-level precision through coordination-driven self-assembly.

Self-Assembly Methods for Recently Reported Discrete Supramolecular Structures Based on Terpyridine

In this Review, self-assembly methods of discrete metallo-supramolecules based on 2,2' : 6',2''-terpyridine (tpy) are comprehensively summarized. With the development of self-assembly, strategies for discrete 2D and 3D supramolecular architectures have boomed, including the geometry-directed method, template-driven method, and stepwise method. Ligand geometry-directed method mainly depends on the geometry of ligands (i. e., angle, geometric strain, and rigidity), and it is suitable for dual-component systems, while the template-driven method can guide the self-assembly of predesigned supramolecules by the introduction of specific templates. Meanwhile, stepwise method, breaking the inherent self-sorting of ligands and reducing the probability of mismatch, is suitable for multicomponent systems to yield predesigned supramolecules. This review focuses on self-assembly methods and aims to provide a guideline for constructing supramolecular architectures using a suitable approach.

Designing narcissistic self-sorting terpyridine moieties with high coordination selectivity for complex metallo-supramolecules

Coordination-driven self-assembly is a powerful approach for the construction of metallosupramolecules, but designing coordination moieties that can drive the self-assembly with high selectivity and specificity remains a challenge. Here we report two ortho-modified terpyridine ligands that form head-to-tail coordination complexes with Zn(II). Both complexes show narcissistic self-sorting behaviour. In addition, starting from these ligands, we obtain two sterically congested multitopic ligands and use them to construct more complex metallo-supramolecules hexagons. Because of the non-coaxial structural restrictions in the rotation of terpyridine moieties, these hexagonal macrocycles can hierarchically self-assemble into giant cyclic nanostructures via edge-to-edge stacking, rather than face-to-face stacking. Our design of dissymmetrical coordination moieties from congested coordination pairs show remarkable self-assembly selectivity and specificity.

A Terpyridine-Fe2+-Based Coordination Polymer Film for On-Chip Micro-Supercapacitor with AC Line-Filtering Performance

The preparation of redox-active, ultrathin polymer films as the electrode materials represents a major challenge for miniaturized flexible electronics. Herein, we demonstrated a liquid–liquid interfacial polymerization approach to a coordination polymer films with ultrathin thickness from tri(terpyridine)-based building block and iron atoms. The as-synthesized polymer films exhibit flexible properties, good redox-active and narrow bandgap. After directly transferred to silicon wafers, the on-chip micro-supercapacitors of TpPB-Fe-MSC achieved the high specific capacitances of 1.25 mF cm⁻² at 50 mV s⁻¹ and volumetric energy density of 5.8 mWh cm⁻³, which are superior to most of semiconductive polymer-based micro-supercapacitor (MSC) devices. In addition, as-fabricated on-chip MSCs exhibit typical alternating current (AC) line-filtering performance (−71.3° at 120 Hz) and a short resistance–capacitance (RC) time (0.06 ms) with the electrolytes of PVA/LiCl. This study provides a simple interfacial approach to redox-active polymer films for microsized energy storage devices.

Russian-Doll-Like Molecular Cubes

Nanosized cage-within-cage compounds represent a synergistic molecular self-assembling form of three-dimensional architecture that has received particular research focus. Building multilayered ultralarge cages to simulate complicated virus capsids is believed to be a tough synthetic challenge. Here, we synthesize two large double-shell supramolecular cages by facile self-assembly of presynthesized metal-organic hexatopic terpyridine ligands with metal ions. Differing from the mixture of prisms formed from the inner tritopic ligand, the redesigned metal-organic hexatopic ligands bearing high geometric constraints that led to the exclusive formation of discrete double-shell structures. These two unique nested cages are composed of inner cubes (5.1 nm) and outer huge truncated cubes (12.0 and 13.2 nm) with six large bowl-shape subcages distributed on six faces. The results with molecular weights of 75 232 and 77 667 Da were among the largest synthetic cage-in-cage supramolecules reported to date. The composition, size and shape were unambiguously characterized by a combination of ¹H NMR, DOSY, ESI-MS, TWIM-MS, TEM, AFM, and SAXS. This work provides an interesting model for functional recognition, delivery, and detection of various guest molecules in the field of supramolecular materials.

Self-Assembly of Metallo-Supramolecules with Dissymmetrical Ligands and Characterization by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Asymmetrical and dissymmetrical structures are widespread and play a critical role in nature and life systems. In the field of metallo-supramolecular assemblies, it is still in its infancy for constructing artificial architectures using dissymmetrical building blocks. Herein, we report the self-assembly of supramolecular systems based on two dissymmetrical double-layered ligands. With the aid of ultra-high-vacuum, low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (UHV-LT-STM), we were able to investigate four isomeric structures corresponding to four types of binding modes of ligand LA with two major conformations complexes A. The distribution of isomers measured by STM and total binding energy of each isomer obtained by density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the most abundant isomer could be the most stable one with highest total binding energy. Finally, through shortening the linker between inner and outer layers and the length of arms, the arrangement of dissymmetrical ligand LB could be controlled within one binding mode corresponding to the single conformation for complexes B.

Over one century after discovery: pyrylium salt chemistry emerging as a powerful approach for the construction of complex macrocycles and metallo-supramolecules

Over one century after its discovery, pyrylium salt chemistry has been extensively applied in preparing light emitters, photocatalysts, and sensitizers. In most of these studies, pyrylium salts acted as versatile precursors for the preparation of small molecules (such as furan, pyridines, phosphines, pyridinium salts, thiopyryliums and betaine dyes) and poly(pyridinium salt)s. In recent decades, pyrylium salt chemistry has emerged as a powerful approach for constructing complex macrocycles and metallo-supramolecules. In this perspective, we attempt to summarize the representative efforts of synthesizing and self-assembling large, complex architectures using pyrylium salt chemistry. We believe that this perspective not only highlights the recent achievements in pyrylium salt chemistry, but also inspires us to revisit this chemistry to design and construct macrocycles and metallo-supramolecules with increasing complexity and desired function.

Conformational Regulation of Multivalent Terpyridine Ligands for Self-Assembly of Heteroleptic Metallo-Supramolecules

A two-ligand system composed of the predesigned multivalent and complementary terpyridine-based ligands was exploited to construct heteroleptic metallo-supramolecules and to investigate the self-assembly mechanism. Molecular stellation of the trimeric hexagon [Cd₆L²₃] gave rise to the exclusive self-assembly of the star hexagon [Cd₁₈L¹₆L³₃] through complementary ligand pairing between the ditopic and octatopic tectons. To understand how the intermolecular heteroleptic complexation influenced the self-assembly pathway, the star hexagon was truncated into two triangular fragments: [Cd₁₂L¹₃L⁴₃] and [Cd₁₂L¹₃L⁵₃]. In the self-assembly of [Cd₁₂L¹₃L⁴₃], the conformational movements of hexatopic ligand L⁴ could be regulated by L¹ to promote the subsequent coordination event, which was the key step to the successful multicomponent self-assembly. In contrast, the formation of [Cd₁₂L¹₃L⁵₃] was hampered by the geometrically mismatched intermediates.

Tetraphenylethylene(TPE)-Containing Metal-Organic Nanobelt and Its Turn-on Fluorescence for Sulfide (S2-)

A metal-organic supramolecular nanobelt was synthesized by quantitative self-assembling terpyridine-functionized tetraphenylethylene (TPE) and Cd²⁺, which only showed a weak emission both in solution or aggregated state. Nevertheless, nanobelt complex could be transferred to a fluorescence turn-on sensor to S^2- by taking advantage of the structural transformation from nanobelt to its fluorescent ligand.

Reinforced Topological Nanoassemblies: 2D Hexagon-Fused Wheel to 3D Prismatic Metallo-Lamellar Structure with Molecular Weight of 119 K Daltons

By a precise metallo-ligand design, the advanced coordination-driven self-assembly could succeed in the preparation of giant molecular weight of the metallo-architectures. However, the synthesis of a single discrete high-molecular-weight (>100 K Da) structure has not been demonstrated due to the insurmountable synthetic challenge. Herein, we present a two-dimensional wheel structure (W1) and a gigantic three-dimensional dodecagonal prism-like architecture (P1), which were generated by multicomponent self-assembly of two similar metallo-organic ligands and a core ligand with metal ions, respectively. The giant 2D-suprastructure W1 with six hexagonal metallacycles that fused to the central spoke wheel was first achieved in nearly quantitative yield, and then, directed by introducing a meta-substituted coordination site into the key ligand, the supercharged (36 Ru²⁺ and 48 Cd²⁺ ions) double-decker prismatic structure P1 with two wheel structure W1s serve as the surfaces and 12 <Tpy-Cd²⁺-Tpy> connectivities serve as the edges, where a molecular weight up to 119 498.18 Da was accomplished. The expected molecular composition and size morphology was unequivocally characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and transmission electron microscopy investigations. The introduction of a wheel structure is able to add considerable stability and complexity to the final architecture. These well-defined scaffolds are expected to play an important role in the functional materials field, such as molecular encapsulation and medicine sustained release.

From Dimeric to Octameric Metallo-Supramolecular Macrocycles Based on Sterically Congested Ligand-assisted Self-Assembly with Zn(II), Cd(II), and Fe(II)

Two sterically congested 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine-based ligands LA and LB, composed of asymmetrically contiguous terpyridine units, are designed and synthesized for metallo-supramolecular architectures. The significant advantage of this design is that the terpyridines in these ligands have different chemical environments and show a selective coordination ability with each other. For ditopic ligand LA, the self-assembly with Zn(II), Cd(II), and Fe(II) gave the rhombic dimers, which have the same sets of terpyridine signals as ligand LA. The self-assembly behavior of tritopic ligand LB with Cd(II) and Zn(II) are observed for discrete tetramers under thermodynamic control, whereas ligand LB and Fe(II) are assembled to generate a mixture of tetramer, hexamer, and octamer, which are successfully isolated using regular chromatographic separation. Moreover, the sterically congested ligands and metal ions formed stable intermediates to drive the formation of discrete structures, which is also proved by mixing LB and Cd(II) with a precise stoichiometric ratio of 1:1. These supramolecular complexes are thoroughly characterized by NMR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, and 2D traveling-wave ion mobility-mass spectrometry. This conceptually new design of sterically congested ligands provides a novel strategy for precisely controlled supramolecular complexes with diverse architectures.

Introducing Seven Transition Metal Ions into Terpyridine-Based Supramolecules: Self-Assembly and Dynamic Ligand Exchange Study

In coordination-driven self-assembly, 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) has gained extensive attention in constructing supramolecular architectures on the basis of ⟨tpy-M-tpy⟩ connectivity. In direct self-assembly of large discrete structures, however, the metal ions were mainly limited to Cd(II), Zn(II), and Fe(II) ions. Herein, we significantly broaden the spectrum of metal ions with seven divalent transition metal ions M(II) (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd) to assemble a series of supramolecular fractals. In particular, Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) were reported for the first time to form such large and discrete structures with ⟨tpy-M-tpy⟩ connectivity. In addition, the structural stabilities of those supramolecules in the gas phase and the kinetics of the ligand exchange process in solution were investigated using mass spectrometry. Such a fundamental study gave the relative order of structural stability in the gas phase and revealed the inertness of coordination in solution depending on the metal ions. Those results would guide the future study in tpy-based supramolecular chemistry in terms of self-assembly, characterization, property, and application.

Ditopic Chiral Pineno-Fused 2,2':6',2″-Terpyridine: Synthesis, Self-Assembly, and Optical Properties

The syntheses of 4'-substituted chiral 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) ligands with predetermined configurations and directionalities are rather limited in the supramolecular chemistry field. In this study, a carbazole-linked ditopic chiral ligand L was synthesized using 4'-bromo-substituted pineno-fused tpy 5 as the precursor. Upon complexation with Cd(NO₃)₂·4H₂O and Zn(NO₃)₂·6H₂O, two enantiomerically pure metallosupramolecules, [Cd₃L₃] and [Zn₄L₄], have been self-assembled and characterized by NMR, electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, traveling wave ion mobility-mass spectrometry, and DOSY analysis. In addition, their optical properties are characterized by UV-vis, fluorescence, circular dichroism, and circularly polarized luminescence, suggesting an efficiency transmission and amplification of chirality from the ligand to metal center via self-assembly.

Order from Chaos: Self-Assembly of Nanoprism from a Mixture of Tetratopic Terpyridine-Porphyrin Conformers

Porphyrins have been widely used in the self-assembly of metallo-supramolecules. In this study, we introduced 2,2':6,2"-terpyridine (tpy) into a porphyrin core to synthesize a tetratopic building block with multiple conformers. During the self-assembly with Zn(II), such a mixture of conformers was able to form a discrete nanoprism with all building blocks in one conformation. Detailed characterizations, including NMR, ESI-MS and traveling-wave ion mobility-mass spectrometry (TWIM-MS), all supported the formation of the desired assemblies. AFM and TEM further confirmed the dimensions of assembled nanoprisms. Moreover, the photophysical properties of the ligands and complexes were noticeably different depending upon size and metal ion center.

Assembling Pentatopic Terpyridine Ligands with Three Types of Coordination Moieties into a Giant Supramolecular Hexagonal Prism: Synthesis, Self-Assembly, Characterization, and Antimicrobial Study

Three dimensional (3D) supramolecules with giant cavities are attractive due to their wide range of applications. Herein, we used pentatopic terpyridine ligands with three types of coordination moieties to assemble two giant supramolecular hexagonal prisms with a molecular weight up to 42 608 and 43 569 Da, respectively. Within the prisms, two double-rimmed Kandinsky Circles serve as the base surfaces as well as the templates for assisting the self-sorting during the self-assembly. Additionally, hierarchical self-assembly of these supramolecular prisms into tubular-like nanostructures was fully studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Finally, these supramolecular prisms show good antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive pathogen methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis).

Self-assembly of emissive metallocycles with tetraphenylethylene, BODIPY and terpyridine in one system

Tetraphenylethylene (TPE) related (supra)molecules have been intensively investigated due to their aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect based on the restriction of intramolecular rotation (RIR). Meanwhile, boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) tends to emit intense fluorescence with high quantum yields. Herein, we combined TPE, BODIPY and terpyridine (TPY) into one system to study the emissive behaviour of organic building block as well as a self-assembled metallo-supramolecule. The TPY and BODIPY substituents with bulky sizes provide strong hindrance to restrict the rotation of the phenyl groups on TPE, leading to enhancement of emissive properties in both solution and aggregation states. Furthermore, the BODIPY-TPE-TPY ligand (L) was assembled with Zn (II) through coordination-driven self-assembly to form a cyclic dimer (D) with typical AIE characteristics.

Combining Synthesis and Self-Assembly in One Pot To Construct Complex 2D Metallo-Supramolecules Using Terpyridine and Pyrylium Salts

Multicomponent self-assembly in one pot provides an efficient way for constructing complex architectures using multiple types of building blocks with different levels of interactions orthogonally. The preparation of multiple types of building blocks typically includes tedious synthesis. Here, we developed a multicomponent synthesis/self-assembly strategy, which combined covalent interaction (C-N bond, formed through condensation of pyrylium salt with primary amine) and metal-ligand interaction (N → Zn bond, formed through 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine-Zn coordination) in one pot. The high compatibility of this pair of interactions smoothly and efficiently converted three and four types of components into the desired complex structures, which are supramolecular Kandinsky Circles and spiderwebs, respectively.

Chemical mimicry of viral capsid self-assembly via corannulene-based pentatopic tectons

Self-assembly of twelve pentatopic tectons, which have complementary edges or can be linked using either digonal or trigonal connectors, represents the optimal synthetic strategy to achieve spherical objects, such as chemical capsids. This process requires conditions that secure uninterrupted equilibria of binding and self-correction en route to the global energy minimum. Here we report the synthesis of a highly soluble, deca-heterosubstituted corannulene that bears five terpyridine ligands. Spontaneous self-assembly of twelve such tectons with 30 cadmium(II) cations produces a giant icosahedral capsid as a thermodynamically stable single product in high yield. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods, mass spectrometry analyses, small-angle X-ray scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy indicate that this spherical capsid has an external diameter of nearly 6 nm and shell thickness of 1 nm, in agreement with molecular modeling. NMR and liquid chromatography evidences imply that chiral self-sorting complexation generates a racemic mixture of homochiral capsids.

The icosahedron, as the polyhedron closest in symmetry to the sphere, is one of the most compelling Platonic solids for chemists to construct. Here, the authors assemble a supramolecular icosahedron from twelve pentatopic corannulene-based tectons, a strategy that was proposed over a decade ago but only now synthetically realized.

Trefoiled Propeller-Shaped Spiral Terpyridyl Metal-Organic Architectures

Constructing exquisite and intricate molecular architectures is always the pursuit of chemists. In this report, the propeller-shaped trefoil structures S1 and S2 were successfully prepared by the stepwise self-assembly of predesigned tripodal metal-organic ligands, which consist of bis(terpyridine)s-Ru²⁺-tris(terpyridine)s connectivities for the following complexation with Fe²⁺. The complexes can be described as racemic spiral assemblies with three-fold spiralism. These unique discrete metal-organic architectures were fully characterized by ¹H NMR, 2D NMR spectroscopy (COSY and NOESY), diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY), ESI-MS, TWIM-MS, and TEM, and their photophysical and electrochemical properties were also investigated. Further, hybrid trefoiled structure [Fe₃L1L2] was detected by taking advantage of the flexibility of metal-organic ligands.

Terpyridine-metal complexes: Applications in catalysis and supramolecular chemistry

As an NNN-tridentate ligand, the 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine plays an important role in coordination chemistry. With three coordination sites and low LUMO, terpyridine and its derivatives are one of the typical Pincer ligand and/or non-innocent ligands in transition metal catalysis. Interesting catalytic reactivities have been obtained with these tpy-metal complexes targeting some challenging transformations, such as C-C bond formation and hydrofunctionalization. On the other hand, terpyridine ligands can form "closed-shell" octahedral complexes, which provide a linear and stable linkage in supramolecular chemistry. Numerous supramolecular architectures have been achieved using modified terpyridine ligands including Sierpiński triangles, hexagonal gasket and supramolecular rosettes. This review presents a summary of recent progress regarding transition metal-terpyridine complexes with the focus on their applications in catalysis and supramolecular structure construction. Facile synthesis of terpyridine derivatives is also described. We hope this article can serve to provide some general perspectives of the terpyridine ligand and their applications in coordination chemistry.

Recent developments in the construction of metallacycle/metallacage-cored supramolecular polymers via hierarchical self-assembly

Supramolecular polymers have received considerable attention during the last few decades due to their scientific value in polymer chemistry and profound implications for future developments of advanced materials. Discrete supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) with well-defined size, shape, and geometry have been widely employed to construct hierarchical systems by coordination-driven self-assembly with the spontaneous formation of metal-ligand bonds, which results in the formation of well-defined two-dimensional (2D) metallacycles or three-dimensional (3D) metallacages with high functionalities. The incorporation of discrete SCCs into supramolecular polymers by the orthogonal combination of metal-ligand coordination and other noncovalent interactions or covalent bonding could further facilitate the construction of novel supramolecular polymers with hierarchical architectures and multiple functions including controllable uptake and release of guest molecules, providing a flexible platform for the development of smart materials. In this review, the recent progress in metallacycle/metallacage-cored supramolecular polymers that were constructed by the combination of metal-ligand interactions and other orthogonal interactions (including hydrophobic or hydrophilic interactions, hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces, π-π stacking, electrostatic interactions, host-guest interactions and covalent bonding) has been discussed. In addition, the potential applications of metallacycle/metallacage-cored supramolecular polymers in the areas of light emitting, sensing, bio-imaging, delivery and release, etc., are also presented.

Supramolecular Polymer Cross-Linked by Discrete Tris-[2]pseudorotaxane Metallacycles and Its Redox-Responsive Behavior

A new discrete hexagonal metallacycle M containing tris-[2]pseudorotaxane moiety has been successfully designed and synthesized via coordination-driven self-assembly. The newly designed tris-[2]pseudorotaxane metallacycle was well characterized with nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectra analysis. Such tris-[2]pseudorotaxane metallacycle M and pillar[5]arene dimer (PD) could further form a new family of cross-linked redox-responsive supramolecular polymer M⊃(PD)₃ through a host-guest interaction. Interestingly, the polymer M⊃(PD)₃ displayed redox-responsive behavior and showed tuned weight-average diffusion coefficients D upon redox stimuli, which is attributed to the changed coordination geometries of [Cu(phen)₂]⁺ and [Cu(phen)₂]²⁺ in such system.

Self-Assembly of Supramolecular Fractals from Generation 1 to 5

In the seeking of molecular expression of fractal geometry, chemists have endeavored in the construction of molecules and supramolecules during the past few years, while only a few examples were reported, especially for the discrete architectures. We herein designed and constructed five generations of supramolecular fractals (G1-G5) based on the coordination-driven self-assembly of terpyridine ligands. All the ligands were synthesized from triphenylamine motif, which played a central role in geometry control. Different approaches based on direct Sonogashira coupling and/or ⟨tpy-Ru(II)-tpy⟩ connectivity were employed to prepare complex Ru(II)-organic building blocks. Fractals G1-G5 were obtained in high yields by precise coordination of organic or Ru(II)-organic building blocks with Zn(II) ions. Characterization of those architectures were accomplished by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), traveling-wave ion mobility mass spectrometry (TWIM-MS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, the two largest fractals also hierarchically self-assemble into ordered supramolecular nanostructures either at solid/liquid interface or in solution on the basis of their well-defined scaffolds.

Vertical Assembly of Giant Double- and Triple-Decker Spoked Wheel Supramolecular Structures

The double- or triple-decker 3D metallo-hexagons were obtained by self-assembly of multitopic tris-terpyridines with Cd2+ ions in near-quantitative yield. Comprising up to 72 ionic pairs, the multiple spoked wheels display characteristic reversible gelation properties under thermodynamic conditions. The supramolecular metallo-nanoarchitectures were characterized by 1 H NMR, 2D NMR (COSY and NOESY), and diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) and HR-ESI-MS, traveling-wave ion mobility mass spectrometry (TWIM-MS), TEM, and AFM. For the first time, the self-assembly of 45 units at once was demonstrated to yield exceptional giant triple-decker hexagons of up to circa 42 000 Da.

Multicomponent Self-Assembly of Metallo-Supramolecular Macrocycles and Cages through Dynamic Heteroleptic Terpyridine Complexation

Spontaneous formation of the heteroleptic cadmium(II) bis(terpyridine) complex under ambient conditions can be achieved by a combination of 6,6''-di(2,6-dimethoxylphenyl)-substituted and unsubstituted terpyridine-based ligands. Building on this dynamic heteroleptic complexation, diverse metallo-supramolecular macrocycles and cages were readily assembled in quantitative yields from the predesigned multicomponent systems. The complementary ligation reinforced self-recognition to facilitate the shape-dependent self-sorting of a four-component dynamic library into two well-defined parallelograms. In addition, the subtle lability difference between homoleptic and heteroleptic complexes led to the site-selective Cd^II -Zn^II transmetalation in the Sierpiński triangle. Facile construction of a dodecanuclear tetrahedral metallocage was also realized by using two self-recognizable tritopic building blocks. The photophysical study of the metallo-supramolecules assembled from the d¹⁰ metal ions revealed intense ligand-based photoluminescence in solution. The self-assembly strategy described here provides an efficient methodology for building pre-programmable, sophisticated supramolecular architectures furnished with photoactivity.

Supramolecular arrays by the self-assembly of terpyridine-based monomers with transition metal ions

Hierarchical construction of a highly ordered supramolecular array has been, in general, a challenge due to the complexation of building blocks and the hard-to-control weak interactions. Herein, we present a type of well-ordered nanoribbon, which was self-assembled via shape complimentary and hydrophobic effects from the bowl-shaped supramolecular components, which were synthesized by combining designer terpyridine-based monomers and two different metal ions (Ru2+, Zn2+). Interestingly, switching counter ions or changing monomer concentrations, a transformation between a uniform nanosphere and nanoribbon occurred. This opens a door to fabricate readily tailorable, large-scale, supramacromolecular materials.

Hierarchical self-assembly of a fluorescence emission-enhanced organogelator and its multiple stimuli-responsive behaviors

A discrete hexagonal metallacycle 1 decorated with tetraphenylethylene, amide groups and long hydrophobic alkyl chains was constructed via [3 + 3] coordination-driven self-assembly, from which the fluorescence emission-enhanced organogelator with multiple stimuli-responsiveness was successfully prepared via hierarchical self-assembly.
