Synthesis and characterization of a metal-to-polyoxometalate charge transfer molecular chromophore

Controlled Assembly of Ru-Containing Polyoxometalates for Photocatalytic Activity of the Primary Amine Coupling Reaction

Three Ru-induced structural interconversion polyoxometalates (POMs), Na₁₃H₅[Ru₄(H₂O)₂(Cl)₂(WO₂)₄(AsW₉O₃₃)₄]·43H₂O (1), K₅Na₉H₈[Ru₂(WO₂)₄(AsW₉O₃₃)₄]·50H₂O (2), and KNa₁₃H₁₄[(WO₂)₄(AsW₉O₃₃)₄]·34H₂O (3), were successfully synthesized and thoroughly characterized. Interconversion of structures was accomplished by changing the number of active sites for compounds 1-3. All three compounds contain one {As₄W₄₀O₁₄₀} unit, showing similar structural characteristics except for the active center number (Ru). Interestingly, compound 1 [turnover number (TON)= 486; turnover frequency (TOF)= 20 h^-1] showed highly efficient photocatalysis in achieving oxidative coupling of primary amines. Compound 2 (TON = 406, TOF = 17 h^-1) was also found to promote the oxidative coupling with relatively poor efficiency; however, compound 3 (TON = 178; TOF = 7.4 h^-1) had no obvious contribution to the coupling reaction system, and a chain of evidence indicates that the catalytic performances are strongly dependent on element contents of active sites. Furthermore, the Ru-containing POM-based photocatalysts are conveniently recyclable and reusable during the photocatalytic processes. This study demonstrates the possibility of tuning the catalytic efficiency and stability of POM-based photocatalysts by well designing and controlling their structures. The possible reaction mechanism for the photocatalysis synthesis of imine product is also proposed based on experimental studies.

Extended Mo3IV-Polyoxometalates: 1D-[Mo6IVMo4VIGe2ZnO31py9 (H2O)]4- and 2D-[Mo3IVMo9VIZn6P7O56py8]+ (py = Pyridine)

The first examples of extended Mo₃^IV-polyoxometalates (Mo₃^IV-POMs), 1D-H₂ [Ge₂Mo₆^IVMo₄^VIO₃₁Zn(H₂O)py₉]·2Hpy·HOCH₂CH₂ OH^•4H₂O(H₂[1]·2Hpy^•glycol·H₂O) and 2D-[P@Mo₃^IVMo₉^VIZn₆(PO₄)₆O₃₂py₈]Cl·2py·7H₂O ([2]·Cl^•2py·7H₂O), were prepared through the solvothermal partial oxidation of [Mo₃^IVO₂(O₂CCH₃)₆(H₂O)₃]ZnCl₄ in py/H₂O containing glycol (for 1) or H₃PO₄ (for 2). They were characterized by X-ray crystallography and elemental analyses. Their electronic structure and bonding were discussed on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) theoretical calculations. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, IR/UV-vis spectra, powder X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, and mass spectrometry were also performed and discussed for 2D-2.

Design of a Polyoxometalate-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Photocatalytic C(sp3)-H Oxidation of Toluene

A powerful and promising route for developing novel photocatalysts for light-driven toluene oxidation in water under mild conditions is presented. Herein, a novel polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework (POMOF), {Co₄W₂₂-DPNDI}, is prepared by incorporating the unusual Co₄-sandwiched POM anion [Co₄(μ-OH)₂(SiW₁₁O₃₉)₂]^10- ({Co₄W₂₂}) and the photoactive organic bridging link N,N'-bis(4-pyridylmethyl)naphthalene diimide (DPNDI) into a framework. {Co₄W₂₂} is a good candidate for photocatalytic water oxidation. DPNDI is easily excited to form the radical species DPNDI* in the presence of an electron donor, which is beneficial for activation of the inert O₂. Anion···π interactions and covalent bonds between {Co₄W₂₂} and DPNDI facilitate electron-hole separation and electron transfer. {Co₄W₂₂-DPNDI} displays high catalytic activity for the activation of the C(sp³)-H bond of toluene using light as a driving force and inexpensive water as an oxygen source under mild conditions. In particular, the yield and selectivity are improved by replacing oxygen with water, which may be ascribed to the release of protons during the water oxidation process that facilitate the generation of ^•OH.

Tuning Photoinduced Electron Transfer in POM-Bodipy Hybrids by Controlling the Environment: Experiment and Theory

The optical and electrochemical properties of a series of polyoxometalate (POM) oxoclusters decorated with two bodipy (boron-dipyrromethene) light-harvesting units were examined. Evaluated here in this polyanionic donor-acceptor system is the effect of the solvent and associated counterions on the intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer. The results show that both solvents and counterions have a major impact upon the energy of the charge-transfer state by modifying the solvation shell around the POMs. This modification leads to a significantly shorter charge separation time in the case of smaller counterion and slower charge recombination in a less polar solvent. These results were rationalized in terms of Marcus theory and show that solvent and counterion both affect the driving force for photoinduced electron transfer and the reorganization energy. This was corroborated with theoretical investigations combining DFT and molecular dynamics simulations.

{P2V3W15}-Polyoxometalates Functionalized with Phthalocyaninato Y and Yb Moieties

A tris(alkoxo)pyridine-augmented Wells-Dawson polyoxometalate (nBu₄N)₆[WD-Py] (WD = P₂V₃W₁₅O₅₉(OCH₂)₃C, Py = C₅H₄N) was functionalized with phthalocyaninato metal moieties (MPc where M = Y or Yb and Pc = C₃₂H₁₆N₈) to afford (nBu₄N)₄[HWD-Py(MPc)] compounds. High-resolution mass spectrometry was used to detect and identify the hybrid assembly. The magnetism studies reveal substantial differences between M = Yb (monomeric, single-ion paramagnetism) and M = Y (containing dimers, radical character). The results of electronic paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and magnetochemical calculations indicate the presence of intramolecular charge transfer from the MPc moiety to the polyoxometalate and of intermolecular charge transfer from the MPc moiety of one molecule to the polyoxometalate unit of another molecule. These compounds with identified V^IV ions represent unique examples of transition-metal/lanthanide complex-POM hybrid compounds with nonphotoinduced charge transfer between electron donor and acceptor centers.

Yield-not only Lifetime-of the Photoinduced Charge-Separated State in Iridium Complex-Polyoxometalate Dyads Impact Their Hydrogen Evolution Reactivity

Covalently linked photosensitizer-polyoxometalate (PS-POM) dyads are promising molecular systems for light-induced energy conversion processes, such as "solar" hydrogen generation. To date, very little is known of their fundamental photophysical properties which affect the catalytic reactivity and stability of the systems. PS-POM dyads often feature short-lived photoinduced charge-separated states, and the lifetimes of these states are considered crucial for the function of PS-POM dyads in molecular photocatalysis. Hence, strategies have been developed to extend the lifetimes of the photoinduced charge-separated states, either by tuning the PS photophysics or by tuning the POM redox properties. Recently, some of us reported PS-POM dyads based on cyclometalated Ir^III complexes covalently linked to Anderson-type polyoxometalate. Distinct hydrogen evolution reactivity (HER) of the dyads was observed, which was tuned by varying the central metal ion M of the POM_M (M=Mn³⁺ , Co³⁺ , Fe³⁺ ). In this manuscript, the photoinduced electron-transfer processes in the three Ir-POM_M dyads are investigated to rationalize the underlying reasons for the differences in HER activity observed. We report that upon excitation of the Ir^III complex, ultrafast (sub-ps) charge separation occurs, leading to different amounts of the charge-separated states (Ir^.+ -POM_M ^.- ) generated in the different dyads. However, in all dyads studied, the resulting Ir^.+ -POM_M ^.- species are short-lived (sub-ns) when compared to reference electron acceptors (e.g. porphyrins or fullerenes) reported in the literature. The reductive quenching of Ir^.+ -POM_M ^.- by a sacrificial donor, triethyl amine (1 m), to generate the intermediate Ir-POM_M ^.- is estimated to be very efficient (70-80 %) for all dyads studied. Based on this analyses, we conclude that the yield instead of the lifetime of the Ir^.+ -POM_M ^.- charge-separated state determines the catalytic capacity of the dyads investigated. This new feature in the PS-POM photophysics could lead to new design criteria for the development of novel PS-POM dyads.

A new phosphotungstate-supported rhenium carbonyl derivative: synthesis, characterization and catalytic selective oxidation of thiophenes

We synthesized a new phosphotungstate-supported rhenium carbonyl derivative, [N(CH₃)₄]₆H₄[P₂W₁₇O₆₂{Re(CO)₃}₂]·25H₂O, existing the first {Re₂} fragment. Moreover, it also exhibits high efficiency for the selective oxidation of thiophenes.

Polyoxometalate-supported metal carbonyl derivatives: from synthetic strategies to structural diversity and applications

This review aims to give an overview of the POM-supported metal carbonyl complexes obtained so far, focusing on their structural diversity and potential photochemical and catalytic properties.

Modeling the Oxygen Vacancy at a Molecular Vanadium(III) Silica-Supported Catalyst

Here we report on the use of a silanol-decorated polyoxotungstate, [SbW₉O₃₃( ^tBuSiOH)₃]^3- (1), as a molecular support to describe the coordination of a vanadium atom at a single-site on silica surfaces. By reacting [V(Mes)₃·thf] (Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) with 1 in tetrahydrofuran, the vanadium(III) derivative [SbW₉O₃₃( ^tBuSiO)₃V(thf)]^3- (2) was obtained. Compound 2 displays the paramagnetic behavior expected for a d²-V^III high spin complex (SQUID measurements) with a triplet electronic ground state (ca. 30 kcal·mol^-1 more stable than the singlet, from DFT calculations). Compound 2 proves to be a reliable model for reduced isolated-vanadium atom dispersed on silica surfaces [(≡Si-O)₃V^III(OH₂)], an intermediate that is often proposed in a Mars-van Krevelen type mechanism for partial oxidation of light alcohols. Oxidation of 2 under air produced the oxo-derivative [SbW₉O₃₃( ^tBuSiO)₃VO]^3- (3). In compound 2, the d²-electrons are localized in degenerated d(V) orbitals, whereas in the electronically analogous bireduced-[SbW₉O₃₃( tBuSiO)₃VO]^5-, 3·(2e), one electron is localized on d(V) orbital and the second one is delocalized on the polyoxotungstic framework, leading to a unique case of a bireduced heteropolyanion derivative with completely decoupled d¹-V(IV) and d¹-W(V). Our body of experimental results (EPR, magnetic measurements, spectroelectrochemical studies, Raman spectroscopy) and theoretical studies highlights (i) the role of the apical ligand coordination, i.e., thf (σ-donor) vs oxo (π-donor), in destabilizing or stabilizing the d(V) orbitals relative to the d(W) orbitals, and (ii) a geometrical distortion of the O₃VO entity that causes a splitting of the degenerated orbitals and the stabilization of one d(V) orbital in the bireduced compound 3·(2e).

Multi-Tasking POM Systems

Polyoxometalate (POM)-based materials of current interest are summarized, and specific types of POM-containing systems are described in which material facilitates multiple complex interactions or catalytic processes. We specifically highlight POM-containing multi-hydrogen-bonding polymers that form gels upon exposure to select organic liquids and simultaneously catalyze hydrolytic or oxidative decontamination, as well as water oxidation catalysts (WOCs) that can be interfaced with light-absorbing photoelectrode materials for photoelectrocatalytic water splitting.

Organometallic functionalized non-classical polyoxometalates: synthesis, characterization and electrochemical properties

Two monomeric non-classical tellurium-containing heteropolymolybdate-supported metal carbonyl derivatives (NH4)5H3{[Te2Mo12(OH)O44][Mn(CO)3]}·18H2O (1) and (NH4)8{[Te2Mo12(OH)O44][Re(CO)3]}·13H2O (2) have been successfully isolated in good yields. Compounds 1 and 2 are the first two examples of metal carbonyl derivatives of heteromolybdate with tellurium as the central atom. These two compounds have been thoroughly characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analyses, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The electrochemical catalytic activities of 1 and 2 including cyclic voltammetry and catalytic oxidation of nitrite have also been investigated.

Rapid photoinduced charge injection into covalent polyoxometalate-bodipy conjugates

Controlled design of photoactive hybrids would provide highly active materials for solar energy conversion and photo(electro) catalysis. We describe the kinetics of photoinduced electron transfer in a series of photoactive hybrids based on Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs) covalently grafted to bodipy photosensitizers. We show how the electronic properties and corresponding dynamics of these hybrids can be readily tuned by varying the POM metal ion, the anchoring functionalization and the spacer length. Ultrafast visible and IR transient absorption spectroscopy, supported by spectroelectrochemical measurements, reveals that photoinduced electron transfer from the bodipy chromophore to the organosilyl POM derivative occurs as rapidly as τ = 54 ps to generate a long-lived (τ = 4.8 ns) charge-separated (CS) state, making this system appropriate for applications in photoelectrochemical devices.

Coexistence of distinct intramolecular electron transfer pathways in polyoxometalate based molecular triads

Polyoxometalate (POM)-associated charge-separated states, formed by the photoinduced oxidation of a covalently attached photosensitizer and reduction of the POM, have attracted much attention due to the remarkable catalytic properties of the reduced POMs. However, short lifetimes of the POM-associated charge-separated state, which in some cases lead to the backward electron transfer being more rapid than the formation of the charge-separated state itself, are generally observed. Recently, we reported on the first example of a relative long-lived (τ = 470 ns) charge-separated state in a Ru(ii) bis(terpyridine)-POM molecular dyad. In this manuscript, further studies on extended molecular structures - two molecular triads - which contain an additional electron donor, phenothiazine (PTZ) or π-extended tetrathiafulvalene (exTTF), are discussed. We show that the excitation of the photosensitizer leads to the population of two distinct MLCT states, which differ in the distribution of excess electron density on the two distinct tpy ligands. These two MLCT states decay separately and, thus, constitute the starting points for distinct intramolecular electron-transfer pathways leading to the simultaneous population of two partially charge-separated states, i.e. PTZ˙+-Ru(tpy)2˙--POM and PTZ-RuIII(tpy)2-POM˙-. These independent decay pathways are unaffected by the choice of the electron donor. Thus, the initial charge distribution within the coordination environment of the photocenter determines the nature of the subsequent (partially) charge separated state that is formed in the triads. These results might open new avenues to design molecular interfaces, in which the directionality of electron transfer can be tuned by the choice of initial excitation.

Investigation of excited state, reductive quenching, and intramolecular electron transfer of Ru(ii)-Re(i) supramolecular photocatalysts for CO2 reduction using time-resolved IR measurements

Supramolecular photocatalysts in which Ru(ii) photosensitizer and Re(i) catalyst units are connected to each other by an ethylene linker are among the best known, most effective and durable photocatalytic systems for CO2 reduction. In this paper we report, for the first time, time-resolved infrared (TRIR) spectra of three of these binuclear complexes to uncover why the catalysts function so efficiently. Selective excitation of the Ru unit with a 532 nm laser pulse induces slow intramolecular electron transfer from the 3MLCT excited state of the Ru unit to the Re unit, with rate constants of (1.0-1.1) × 104 s-1 as a major component and (3.5-4.3) × 106 s-1 as a minor component, in acetonitrile. The produced charge-separated state has a long lifetime, with charge recombination rate constants of only (6.5-8.4) × 104 s-1. Thus, although it has a large driving force (-ΔG0CR ∼ 2.6 eV), this process is in the Marcus inverted region. On the other hand, in the presence of 1-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide (BNAH), reductive quenching of the excited Ru unit proceeds much faster (kq[BNAH (0.2 M)] = (3.5-3.8) × 106 s-1) than the abovementioned intramolecular oxidative quenching, producing the one-electron-reduced species (OERS) of the Ru unit. Nanosecond TRIR data clearly show that intramolecular electron transfer from the OERS of the Ru unit to the Re unit (kET > 2 × 107 s-1) is much faster than from the excited state of the Ru unit, and that it is also faster than the reductive quenching process of the excited Ru unit by BNAH. To measure the exact value of kET, picosecond TRIR spectroscopy and a stronger reductant were used. Thus, in the case of the binuclear complex with tri(p-fluorophenyl)phosphine ligands (RuRe(FPh)), for which intramolecular electron transfer is expected to be the fastest among the three binuclear complexes, in the presence of 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole (BIH), kET was measured as kET = (1.4 ± 0.1) × 109 s-1. This clearly shows that intramolecular electron transfer in these RuRe binuclear supramolecular photocatalysts is not the rate-determining process in the photocatalytic reduction of CO2, which is one of the main reasons why they work so efficiently.

Direct detection of the photoinduced charge-separated state in a Ru(ii) bis(terpyridine)-polyoxometalate molecular dyad

Observation of photoinduced intramolecular charge-separation is difficult for photosensitizer-POM dyads because of rapid backward electron transfer. We report here for the first time on a long-lived charge-separated state (τ = 470 ns) observed in a Ru(ii) bis(terpyridine)-based dyad. Charge-separation occurs despite virtually no driving force and the short intrinsic excited-state lifetime of the photosensitizer.

Immobilization of carbonyl rhenium tripods on the surface of a trinickel-substituted Dawson-type polyoxotungstate

A monomeric trinickel(ii)-substituted phosphotungstate [H₉P₂W₁₅O₆₂Ni₃]⁹⁻ ion is stabilized by grafting three {Re(CO)₃} organometallic groups on the surface of a trinickel cluster for the first time. The resulting polyanions [P₂W₁₅O₅₆Ni₃(H₂O)₃(μ₃-OH)₃(Re(CO)₃)₃]⁶⁻ stacked along the a-axis to form a wavy line.

An isotetramolybdate-supported rhenium carbonyl derivative: synthesis, characterization, and use as a catalyst for sulfoxidation

We successfully synthesized an isotetramolybdate-supported rhenium carbonyl derivative, [(CH₃)₄N]₄[{Re(CO)₃}₄(Mo₄O₁₆)]·H₂O, which showed excellent catalytic activity in the selective oxidation of sulfides under comparatively mild reaction conditions.

Two New Tetravacant Organometallic Keggin-Type Heteropolyoxomolybdates-Supported Manganese Carbonyl Derivatives

Two novel heteropolyoxomolybdate [XMo₈O₃₁]ⁿ⁻ (X = Ge(1) or P(2)) manganese carbonyl derivatives [(CH₃)₄N]₆H₆{Mn^II(GeMo₈O₃₁)[Mn^I(CO)₃]₂}₂·12H₂O (1) and [(CH₃)₄N]₄H₆{Mn^II(PMo₈O₃₁)[Mn^I(CO)₃]₂}₂·14H₂O (2), have been successfully synthesized and characterized in the solid state by single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR and thermogravimetric analysis, and in solution by UV-Vis spectroscopy and electrochemistry. The two polyoxomolybdate-based organometallic compounds 1 and 2 represent rare examples of transition metal sandwich-based polyoxometalate metal carbonyl derivatives (PMCDs), in which the organic-inorganic hybrids are composed of four Mn(CO)₃⁺ groups symmetrically occupied the tetravacant sites of dimeric heteropolyoxomolybdate {Mn₂(XMo₈O₃₁)₂}ⁿ⁻ through Mn^I-O-Mo bonds. The carbonyl functionalized Mn atoms are octahedrally coordinated via three μ₂-oxygens of the [XMo₈O₃₁]ⁿ⁻ unit and three carbonyl carbon atoms. Interestingly, 1 and 2 form a psedocuboidal ring Mn(CO)₃Mo₃O₁₂ with {Mn(CO)₃}⁺ occupying the three fold axis of the Mo₃O₁₂ octahedral triad. Beside this, the two centrally placed adjacent Mn^II atoms show intramolecular Mn∙∙∙Mn interactions of 3.11 and 3.16 Å in 1 and 2, respectively. Significant n→π* and O···O intermolecular interactions between the orthogonally aligned adjacent carbonyl groups through the overlap of lone-pair electrons on oxygen atoms with the antibonding orbital (π*) of the adjacent carbony carbon atom of the subsequent units in 1 and 2 were observed. The electrochemical properties of the two compounds were also been investigated.

Tailor-made Covalent Organic-Inorganic Polyoxometalate Hybrids: Versatile Platforms for the Elaboration of Functional Molecular Architectures

Post-functionalization of organically modified polyoxometalates (POMs) is a powerful synthetic tool to devise functional building blocks for the rational elaboration of POM-based molecular materials. In this personal account we focus on iodoaryl-terminated POM platforms, describe reliable routes to the synthesis of covalent organic-inorganic POM-based hybrids and their integration into advanced molecular architectures or multi-scale assemblies as well as their immobilization onto surfaces. Valorisation of the remarkable redox properties of POMs in the fields of artificial synthesis and molecular electronic is especially considered.

Transition Metal Substitution Effects on Metal-to-Polyoxometalate Charge Transfer

A series of hetero-bimetallic transition metal-substituted polyoxometalates (TMSPs) were synthesized based on the Co(II)-centered ligand [Co(II)W11O39](10-). The eight complex series, [Co(II)(M(x)OHy)W11O39]((12-x-y)-) (M(x)OHy = V(IV)O, Cr(III)(OH2), Mn(II)(OH2), Fe(III)(OH2), Co(II)(OH2), Ni(II)(OH2), Cu(II)(OH2), Zn(II)(OH2)), of which six are reported for the first time, was synthesized starting from [Co(III)W11O39](9-) and studied using spectroscopic, electrochemical, and computational techniques to evaluate the influence of substituted transition metals on the photodynamics of the metal-to-polyoxometalate charge transfer (MPCT) transition. The bimetallic complexes all show higher visible light absorption than the plenary [Co(II)W12O40](6-) and demonstrate the same MPCT transition as the plenary complex, but they have shorter excited-state lifetimes (sub-300 ps in aqueous media). The decreased lifetimes are rationalized on the basis of nonradiative relaxation due to coordinating aqua ligands, increased interaction with cations due to increased negative charge, and the energy gap law, with the strongest single factor appearing to be the charge on the anion. The most promising results are from the Cr- and Fe-substituted systems, which retain excited-state lifetimes at least 50% of that of [Co(II)W12O40](6-) while more than tripling the absorbance at 400 nm.

Exceptional photosensitivity of a polyoxometalate-based charge-transfer hybrid material

Exceptional light sensitivity was realized in a polyoxometalate-based hybrid material due to cooperative multicomponent molecular charge-transfer interactions taking place in this material. The π-acidic NDI linkers and POM clusters in the hybrid material were designed as photosensors and electronic reservoirs, respectively.

A nona-vacant Keggin-type tricarbonyl rhenium derivative {[PMo3O16][Re(CO)3]4}5− and its catalytic performance for CO2 cycloaddition reactions

A nona-vacant Keggin-type tricarbonyl rhenium derivative {[PMo₃O₁₆][Re(CO)₃]₄}⁵⁻ was synthesized and its frontier orbitals were computed. Interestingly, it showed good catalytic activity for the CO₂ cycloaddition reaction.

Visible-light-responsive multielectron redox catalysis of lacunary polyoxometalates induced by substrate coordination to their lacuna

We describe herein the efficient visible-light-responsive polyoxometalate-based multielectron photoredox catalysis induced by in situ coordination of alcohols to the lacuna of TBA4 H4 [γ-SiW10 O36 ] (I, TBA=tetra-n-butylammonium). The coordination of alcohols to the lacuna of I generated a new highest occupied molecular orbital as the electron donor level and enabled the visible-light-responsive multielectron transfer from alcohols to I, which could be utilized for aerobic alcohol oxidation and one-pot synthesis of N-arylimines starting from nitroarenes and primary alcohols.

A novel carboxyethyltin functionalized sandwich-type germanotungstate: synthesis, crystal structure, photosensitivity, and application in dye-sensitized solar cells

A novel sandwich-type germanotungstate [C(NH2)3]10[Mn2{Sn(CH2)2COOH}2(B-α-GeW9O34)2]·8H2O (1) represents the first single crystalline polyoxometalate (POM) functionalized by open chain carboxyethyltin, which was designed and synthesized in aqueous solution and applied to a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) for the first time. Its photosensitivity was explored through a fluorescence spectrum (FL), surface photovoltage spectrum (SPV), electrochemical method, and solid diffuse spectrum. 1 displays the primary features of sensitizers in DSSCs, and the efficiency of the solar cell is 0.22%. Delightedly, when 1 was employed to assemble a cosensitized solar cell configuration by preparing a 1-doped TiO2 electrode and additionally adsorbing N719 dyes, a considerably improved efficiency was achieved through increasing spectral absorption and accelerating electron transport, which is 19.4% higher than that of single N719 sensitization. This result opens up a new way to position different dyes on a single TiO2 film for cosensitization.
