Synchrotron X-ray, Photoluminescence, and Quantum Chemistry Studies of Bismuth-Embedded Dehydrated Zeolite Y

The optical research progress of nanophosphors composed of transition elements in the fourth period of near-infrared windows I and II for deep-tissue theranostics

Research in the field of nano-optics is advancing by leaps and bounds, among which near-infrared (NIR) light optics have attracted much attention. NIR light has a longer wavelength than visible light, such that it can avoid shielding caused by biological tissues. This advantage has driven its importance and practicality in human treatment applications and has attracted significant attention from researchers in academia and industry. In the broad spectrum of infrared light wavelengths, the most noticeable ones are the NIR biological window I of 700-900 nm and window II of 1000-1700 nm. Luminescent materials can effectively cover the NIR biological window with different doping strategies. These doped elements are mostly transition elements with multielectron orbitals. Several nanomaterials based on narrow-spectrum lanthanides have been developed to correspond to biological applications of different wavelengths. However, this review explicitly introduces the absorption and reflection/luminescence interactions between NIR light and biological tissues independently. Unlike the adjustment of the wavelength of the lanthanide series, this review analyzes the NIR optical properties of the fourth-period element ions in transition elements (such as Cr³⁺ and Ni²⁺). These elements have a broadband wavelength of NIR light emission and higher quantum efficiency, corresponding to the absorption and emission spectrum and photobiological absorption of different NIR windows for therapeutic diagnosis. Finally, this review lists and explores other broadband NIR phosphors and has tried to discover the possibility of non-invasive precision medicine in the future.

Optical encoding of luminescent carbon nanodots in confined spaces

Stable emissive carbon nanodots were generated in zeolite crystals using near infrared photon irradiation gradually converting the occluded organic template, originally used to synthesize the zeolite crystals, into discrete luminescent species consisting of nano-sized carbogenic fluorophores, as ascertained using Raman microscopy, and steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. Photoactivation in a confocal laser fluorescence microscope allows 3D resolved writing of luminescent carbon nanodot patterns inside zeolites providing a cost-effective and non-toxic alternative to previously reported metal-based nanoclusters confined in zeolites, and opens up opportunities in bio-labelling and sensing applications.

Visible and Near-Infrared Emission in Ba3Sc4O9:Bi Phosphor: An Investigation on Bismuth Valence Modification

Bismuth (Bi)-activated luminescence materials have attracted much attention for their tunable broad emissions ranging from a visible to near-infrared (NIR) region. However, it remains a challenge to regulate the Bi valence state and achieve NIR emission via a facile way. Here, we report the design and preparation of Ba₃Sc₄O₉:Bi phosphors, which emit visible and NIR emissions simultaneously even prepared in the air condition. The self-reduction mechanism of Bi³⁺ species in Ba₃Sc₄O₉ with a rigid crystal structure is illustrated based on the charge compensation model, and the coexistence of different Bi-active centers, Bi³⁺ for visible emission, while Bi⁺ and Bi⁰ for NIR emission, is confirmed by the spectroscopic data and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The enhanced NIR emission was further achieved through controlled reducing treatment and the related mechanism has also been clarified. This work paves a new way to control bismuth valence and tune the emission of Bi-based luminescence materials for emerging photonics applications.

Methylbismuth: an organometallic bismuthinidene biradical

We report the generation, spectroscopic characterization, and computational analysis of the first free (non-stabilized) organometallic bismuthinidene, BiMe. The title compound was generated in situ from BiMe3 by controlled homolytic Bi-C bond cleavage in the gas phase. Its electronic structure was characterized by a combination of photoion mass-selected threshold photoelectron spectroscopy and DFT as well as multi-reference computations. A triplet ground state was identified and an ionization energy (IE) of 7.88 eV was experimentally determined. Methyl abstraction from BiMe3 to give [BiMe2]• is a key step in the generation of BiMe. We reaveal a bond dissociation energy of 210 ± 7 kJ mol-1, which is substantially higher than the previously accepted value. Nevertheless, the homolytic cleavage of Me-BiMe2 bonds could be achieved at moderate temperatures (60-120 °C) in the condensed phase, suggesting that [BiMe2]• and BiMe are accessible as reactive intermediates under these conditions.

Ion-Exchangeable Microporous Polyoxometalate Compounds with Off-Center Dopants Exhibiting Unconventional Luminescence

The synthesis of luminescent polyoxometalates (POMs) typically relies on the assembly of POM ligands with rare earth or transition metals, placing significant constraints on the composition, structure, and hence the luminescence properties of the resultant systems. Herein, we show that the ion-exchange strategy can be used for the synthesis of novel POM-based luminescent materials. We demonstrate that introducing bismuth ions into an ion-exchangeable, microporous POM compound yields an unconventional system luminescing in the near-infrared region. Experimental characterization, coupled with quantum chemical calculations, confirms that bismuth ions site-specifically occupy an off-center site in the lattice, and have an asymmetric coordination geometry unattainable by other means, thus giving rise to peculiar emission. Our findings offer an effective strategy for the synthesis of POM-based luminescent materials, and the design concept may potentially be adapted to the creation of POM-based systems with other functionalities.

Transformation of Perovskite BaBiO3 into Layered BaBiO2.5 Crystals Featuring Unusual Chemical Bonding and Luminescence

Engineering oxygen coordination environments of cations in oxides has received intense interest thanks to the opportunities for the discovery of novel oxides with unusual properties. Herein, the synthesis of stoichiometric layered BaBiO_2.5 by a nontopotactic phase transformation of perovskite BaBiO₃ is presented. By analyzing the synchrotron X-ray diffraction data by the maximum-entropy method/Rietveld technique, it was found that Bi is involved in an unusual chemical bonding situation with four oxygen atoms featuring one ionic bond and three covalent bonds, which results in an asymmetric coordination geometry. Photophysical characterization revealed that this peculiar structure shows near-infrared luminescence differing from that of conventional Bi-containing compounds. Experimental and theoretical results led to the proposal of an excitonic nature of the luminescence. This work highlights that synthesizing materials with uncommon Bi-O bonding and Bi coordination geometry provides a pathway to the discovery of systems with new functionalities. This could inspire interest in the exploration of a range of materials containing heavier p-block elements with prospects for finding systems with unusual properties.

Bismuth Complexes in Phenylazomethine Dendrimers: Controllable Luminescence and Emission in the Solid State

Dendritic phosphors were obtained by the stepwise integration of BiCl₃ in phenylazomethine dendrimers. The bismuth-coordinated phenylazomethines displayed photoluminescence at 500-800 nm, and the intensity could be tuned by changing the stoichiometry of BiCl₃ and the dendrimer. This phosphor did not show serious luminescence quenching even though the local concentration of BiCl₃ in the dendrimer was as high as 20 M, and luminescence was also observed in the solid state. The absorption and emission properties could be reversibly switched by addition of a Lewis base or under electrochemical redox control, which induced the reversible complexation of BiCl₃ in the dendrimer.

Superbroad near-infrared photoluminescence covering the second biological window achieved by bismuth-doped oxygen-deficient gadolinium oxide

We demonstrated that bismuth-doped oxygen-deficient gadolinium oxides, produced through a low-temperature topochemical reduction strategy using CaH₂ as a solid-state reducing agent, show superbroad NIR PL covering the second biological window.

Luminescent metal nanoclusters: controlled synthesis and functional applications

Luminescent metal nanoclusters that consist of only several, to tens of, metal atoms and which possess sizes comparable to the Fermi wavelength of electrons have recently attracted significant attention. This new class of luminescent materials not only provides the missing link between atomic and nanoparticle behaviors in metals but also they present abundant novel information for the development of new applicable material systems to meet urgent needs in many areas (such as ultrasensitive sensors for heavy metals, bioimaging, as well as information technology) mainly because of their attractive characteristics, including ultra-small size, good dispersibility, excellent biocompatibility and photostability. In this review, we summarize recent advances in the controlled synthesis and application of luminescent metal nanoclusters, with a particular emphasis on Pt, Mo, Bi and alloy clusters. We also speculate on their future and discuss potential developments for their use in sensors, bioimaging and energy harvesting and conversion.

Regulation of structure rigidity for improvement of the thermal stability of near-infrared luminescence in Bi-doped borate glasses

The effect of heat-treatment on the near-infrared (NIR) luminescence properties was studied in Bi-doped borate glasses. The luminescence intensity generally decreases with the increase of temperature, and the thermal stability can be improved by nearly 4.5 times with addition of 5 mol% La2O3. Collaborative studies by using steady photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra, luminescence decay curve, differential thermal analysis (DTA), Raman spectra and X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicate that the luminescence decrement is associated with the agglomeration of Bi active centers during heat-treatment. The improvement of the thermal stability of NIR luminescence with the addition of La2O3 is benefited from the enhancement of structure rigidity due to the strong cationic field strength of La3+. The results not only provide valuable guidance for suppressing performance degradation of Bi-doped glass during fiber drawing process, but also present an effective way to control the luminescence properties of main group elements in glasses from the perspective of glass structure.

Enhanced broadband near-infrared luminescence of Bi-doped oxyfluoride glasses

Broadband near-infrared luminescence covering 900 to 1600 nm has been observed in Bi-doped oxyfluoride silicate glasses. The partial substitution of fluoride for oxide in Bi-doped silicate glasses leads to an increase of the intensity and lifetime of the near-infrared luminescence and blue-shift of the near-infrared emission peaks. Both Bi-doped silicate and oxyfluoride silicate glasses show visible luminescence with blue, green, orange and red emission bands when excited by ultra-violet light. Careful investigation on the luminescence properties indicates that the change of near-infrared luminescence is related to optical basicity, phonon energy of the glass matrix and crystal field around Bi active centers. These results offer a valuable way to control the luminescence properties of Bi-doped materials and may find some applications in fiber amplifier and fiber laser.
