Ex Tenebris Lux: Illuminating Reactive Oxygen and Nitrogen Species with Small Molecule Probes

Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species are small reactive molecules derived from elements in the air─oxygen and nitrogen. They are produced in biological systems to mediate fundamental aspects of cellular signaling but must be very tightly balanced to prevent indiscriminate damage to biological molecules. Small molecule probes can transmute the specific nature of each reactive oxygen and nitrogen species into an observable luminescent signal (or even an acoustic wave) to offer sensitive and selective imaging in living cells and whole animals. This review focuses specifically on small molecule probes for superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorite, nitric oxide, and peroxynitrite that provide a luminescent or photoacoustic signal. Important background information on general photophysical phenomena, common probe designs, mechanisms, and imaging modalities will be provided, and then, probes for each analyte will be thoroughly evaluated. A discussion of the successes of the field will be presented, followed by recommendations for improvement and a future outlook of emerging trends. Our objectives are to provide an informative, useful, and thorough field guide to small molecule probes for reactive oxygen and nitrogen species as well as important context to compare the ecosystem of chemistries and molecular scaffolds that has manifested within the field.

Integration of Hybridization Chain Reaction and Protein-Binding Amplification for Long-Term Imaging of Intracellular mRNA: Avoiding Signal Fluctuation

Amplified nanoprobes based on hybridization chain reaction (HCR) have been widely developed for the detection of intracellular low abundance mRNA. However, the formed chain-like assembly decorated with fluorophore would be degraded rapidly by endogenous enzyme, resulting in failure of the long-term fluorescence imaging. To address this issue, herein, a composite signal-amplifying strategy that integrates HCR into protein-binding signal amplification (HPSA) was communicated for the in situ imaging of mRNA by avoiding signal fluctuation. Different from conventional HCR-based nanoprobes (HCR-nanoprobe), the HCR was used as the signal-triggered mode and the amplifying signal generated from in situ fluorophore-protein binding in cells, which can maintain high stability of the signal for a long time. As a proof-of-principle, a nanobeacon based on HPSA (HPSA-nanobeacon) was constructed to detect TK1 mRNA. Taking advantage of the double signal-amplifying mode, the endogenous TK1 mRNA was sensitively detected and the fluorescence signal was maintained for more than 8 h in HepG2 cells. The attempt in this work provides a new option to the current signal-amplifying strategy for sensing nucleic acid targets with high stability, significantly enhancing the acquisition of intracellular molecular information.

Colorimetric detection of ozone in aqueous solution and imaging in living cells using a novel hemicyanine dye

Ozone (O3) is ubiquitous in the environment and exposure to high levels of O3 has been associated with various respiratory diseases, such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a simple and efficient detection method for monitoring O3 in the environment and living cells. In this study, an intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) compound was designed and synthesized based on a phenol-type hemicyanine dye and 4-bromo-1-butene, which could specifically detect O3 in aqueous solution. Due to the ICT process, the absorption spectrum, fluorescence spectrum, and color of the probe hemicyanine-butyl-3-enyl (HCB) changed significantly and thus the rapid and sensitive detection of O3 was realized. The interaction between O3 and the probe HCB could be completed within 40 min, and the detection limit of O3 was as low as 2.15 × 10-7 mol L-1. Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied to the visual detection of O3 in a simulated O3 environment and living cells.

Portable, low-cost, Raspberry Pi-based optical sensor (PiSENS): continuous monitoring of atmospheric nitrogen dioxide

We have developed a sensing system that utilizes a low-cost computer (Raspberry Pi) and its imaging camera as an optical sensing core for the continuous detection of NO₂ in the air (PiSENS-A). The sensor is based on colour development as a consequence of the interaction of the gas with an absorbing solution. The PiSENS-A is thoroughly calibrated over the hourly mean which is used as one of the key metrics in evaluating air quality. The calibration was performed in the range of 0 < [NO₂] < 476 μg m^-3 chosen to contain the threshold used to determine compliance to the UK's Air Quality Standard Regulations (2010) expressed as a maximum of 18 permitted exceedances of [NO₂]_{hourly mean} = 200 μg per m³ per year. Lab-based measurements were evaluated against UV-vis. The average precision expressed as a relative standard deviation was: RSD% = 2.8%, while the correlation of mock samples was excellent (Pearson's r = 1.000). Field-based measurements were evaluated against chemiluminescence-based instrument exhibiting a correlation coefficient of R² = 0.993. The PiSENS-A was also deployed as an independent air quality analyser at the Keele University campus.

The Versatility in the Applications of Dithiocarbamates

Dithiocarbamate ligands have the ability to form stable complexes with transition metals, and this chelating ability has been utilized in numerous applications. The complexes have also been used to synthesize other useful compounds. Here, the up-to-date applications of dithiocarbamate ligands and complexes are extensively discussed. Some of these are their use as enzyme inhibitor and treatment of HIV and other diseases. The application as anticancer, antimicrobial, medical imaging and anti-inflammatory agents is examined. Moreover, the application in the industry as vulcanization accelerator, froth flotation collector, antifouling, coatings, lubricant additives and sensors is discussed. The various ways in which they have been employed in synthesis of other compounds are highlighted. Finally, the agricultural uses and remediation of heavy metals via dithiocarbamate compounds are comprehensively discussed.

Self-Immolative Dye-Doped Polymeric Probe for Precisely Imaging Hydroxyl Radicals by Avoiding Leakage

For sensing low abundance of biomarkers, utilizing nanocarriers to load dyes is an efficient method to amplify the detected signal. However, the non-specific leak of the internal dyes in this approach is accompanied by false positive signals, resulting in inaccurate signal acquirement. To address this issue, in this work, we reported a novel signal amplification strategy with dye as a scaffold to construct a self-immolative dye-doped polymeric probe (SDPP). In our proposed approach, the dyes were covalently integrated into the main chain of a polymer, which can avoid the non-specific leak of the dye when used in a rigorous biological environment, thus evading the false positive signal. As a prototype of this concept, a SDPP, which responds to hydroxyl radicals (^•OH), was rationally fabricated. Upon being activated by ^•OH, SDPP will liberate the dye through a self-immolative reaction to bind with protein for amplifying the fluorescence signal. Compared with a dye-loaded nanoprobe, SDPP can precisely track intracellular basal ^•OH levels and visualize the ^•OH associated with myocarditis in vivo. More importantly, the attempt in this work not only provides an effective molecular tool to investigate the role of ^•OH in cardiopathy, but also puts forward a new direction to current signal-amplifying strategies for precisely and reliably acquiring the intracellular molecular information.

In situ reduction triggers the highly sensitive detection of pesticide by classic gold nanoparticle and quantum dots nanocomposite

Fluorescence "turn on" method is always preferable for target detection under the urgent demand to develop point-of-care portable sensors in practical applications due to its higher selectivity and less false positives. However, there is only few reports of pesticide monitoring based on this strategy so far most probably ascribed to its poor hydrophilicity and reactivity. In this work, triggered by reductant tris (2-carboxyethyl) phosphine hydrochloride (TCEP), initially fluorescence-quenched gold nanoparticles (Au NPs)-decorated quantum dots (QDs)-embedded nanobead shows obvious fluorescence "turn on" signal response to thiram with concentration response range of 0.01-20 μM and limit of detection (LOD) of 7 nM due to the target-induced dissociation of Au NPs from the surface of probe nanobead. Moreover, paper sensor has been successfully developed by immersing commercial drainage membrane in probe solution for visual detection of thiram with the ultrahigh LOD (50 nM) by the naked eye. More importantly, this work, for the first time, reported an in situ reduction strategy to improve the interaction between target and nanoprobe and thus bring obvious signal output for pesticide detection with high sensitivity, demonstrating the potential to expand the detection scope of nanomaterials.

A highly sensitive fluorescent probe for ozone based on coumarin-benzothiazole derivative

Ozone is widely used in daily life, but studies have shown that O3 can damage human trachea and lungs, leading to diseases such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop a simple and efficient detection method for monitoring O3 in living cells. In this study, 3-(but-3-en-1-yl)-2-(7-(but-3-en-1-yloxy)-2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)benzo[d]thiazol-3-ium (BCT) as a new type of water-soluble fluorescent probe was synthesized by substitution reaction of 4-bromo-1-butene and hydroxycoumarin-benzothiazole derivatives, which can specifically detect ozone in aqueous solution. The interaction of ozone on the probe can be completed within 20 min, the fluorescence intensity is significantly enhanced, and it has the advantages of high sensitivity (detection limit LOD = 43 nM). The influence of pH on the fluorescent performance of BCT shows that the probe with super stability under weak alkali and acidic environment, which provides the necessary conditions for its detection of ozone in physiological system detection. Therefore, BCT is expected to become an effective tool for detecting ozone in cellular organisms.

N-Doped Graphene Quantum Dot-Decorated Three-Dimensional Ordered Macroporous In2O3 for NO2 Sensing at Low Temperatures

Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) detection is of great importance because the emission of NO₂ gas profoundly endangers the natural environment and human health. However, a few challenges, including lowering detection limit, improving response/recovery kinetics, and reducing working temperature, should be further addressed before practical applications. Herein, a series of N-doped graphene quantum dot (N-GQD)-modified three-dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) In₂O₃ composites are constructed and their NO₂ response properties are studied. The results show that compared to pure 3DOM In₂O₃, reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/3DOM In₂O₃, and N-doped graphene sheets (NS)/3DOM In₂O₃, the N-GQDs/3DOM In₂O₃ sensing materials exhibit higher NO₂ responses with fast response and recovery speed and low working temperature (100 °C). In addition, the detection limit of NO₂ response for the optimal N-GQDs/In₂O₃ sensor is as low as 100 ppb. Upon exposure to CO, CH₄, NH₃, acetone, ethanol, toluene, and formaldehyde, only very weak responses could be observed, indicating good selectivity for the synthesized material. More attractively, the responses of the optimized N-GQDs/In₂O₃ sensor exhibit no obviously big fluctuation over 60 days, implying good long-term stability. We suggest that the formation of heterojunctions between 3DOM In₂O₃ and N-GQDs and the doping N atoms in N-GQDs play crucial roles in improving the NO₂ sensing properties.

In Vivo Imaging of Hypoxia Associated with Inflammatory Bowel Disease by a Cytoplasmic Protein-Powered Fluorescence Cascade Amplifier

Accurate and sensitive imaging of hypoxia associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is significant for the precise diagnosis and treatment of this disease, but it remains a challenge for traditional hypoxia-activatable fluorescence probes because of a more moderate hypoxic state during IBD than under other pathological conditions. To address this issue, herein, we designed a hypoxia-activatable and cytoplasmic protein-powered fluorescence cascade amplifier, named HCFA, to image hypoxia associated with IBD in vivo. In our design, a 4-aminobenzoic acid (azo)-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) was used as a container to load black hole quencher 2 (BHQ2) and cytoplasmic protein-binding squarylium dye (SQ); then, the β-cyclodextrin polymer (β-CDP) combined with azo through a host-guest interaction to form HCFA. Upon passive stagnation in the inflamed tissue of IBD, the azo band would be cleaved under a hypoxic microenvironment, and SQ was released to activate the fluorescence of HCFA. Moreover, the unconstrained SQ can bind with cytoplasmic protein to exhibit drastic fluorescence intensity enhancement, realizing the fluorescence signal amplification for imaging of hypoxia. When one takes advantage of the large load capacity of MSN and the unique property of SQ, HCFA can sense oxygen levels in the range of 0% to 10%. Meanwhile, the fluorescence imaging results demonstrate that HCFA can sensitively distinguish different levels of cellular hypoxia and monitor the variations of hypoxia in vivo, highlighting HCFA as a promising tool for the detection of hypoxia associated with IBD.

Strategies for Constructing Upconversion Luminescence Nanoprobes to Improve Signal Contrast

Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) can convert two or more lower-energy near-infrared photons to a single photon with higher energy, which makes them particularly suitable for constructing nanoprobes with large imaging depth and minimal interference of autofluorescence and light scattering from biosamples. Furthermore, they feature excellent photostability, sharp and narrow emissions, and large anti-Stokes shift, which confer them the capability of long-period bioimaging and real-time tracking. In recent years, UCNPs-based nanoprobes (UC-nanoprobes) have been attracting increasing interest in biological and medical research. Signal contrast, the ratio of signal intensity after and before the reaction of the probe and target, is the determinant factor of the sensitivity of all reaction-based probes. This progress report presents the methods of constructing UC-nanoprobes, with a focus fixed on recent strategies to improve the signal contrast, which have kept on promoting the bioapplication of this type of probe.

Development of a Fluorescent Probe for Measurement of Singlet Oxygen Scavenging Activity of Flavonoids

A turn-on fluorescent probe, HOCD-RB, for monitoring singlet oxygen (¹O₂) was developed by linking rhodamine B as fluorophore with dimethylhomoocoerdianthrone (HOCD) as ¹O₂ reaction site and fluorescence quencher due to the intramolecular energy transfer (ET) between rhodamine B and HOCD moieties. Upon exposure to ¹O₂ it rapidly forms endoperoxide with HOCD and turns on the fluorescence of rhodamine B by 18-fold. Taking advantage of the HOCD-RB probe that shows fast response, high sensitivity, and selectivity for ¹O₂, it is applied for imaging of endogenous ¹O₂ in living cells and the fluorometric assay for evaluating ¹O₂ quenching activity of selected common flavonoids found in our daily diets. The results show that the ¹O₂ scavenging activity of flavonoids depends on not only the structure of individual flavonoid but also the competitive interactions between mixed flavonoids. The best antioxidant capacity for individual and mixed flavonoids is epigallocatechin gallate and the mixture of catechin gallate with kaempferol, respectively. Overall, this work provided a new tool for detection and imaging of singlet oxygen activity in a biological system as well as an efficient fluorometric assay of ¹O₂ scavenging activity.

SnS2/SnS p-n heterojunctions with an accumulation layer for ultrasensitive room-temperature NO2 detection

The unique features of SnS₂ make it a sensitive material ideal for preparing high-performance nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) gas sensors. However, sensors based on pristine tin disulfide (SnS₂) fail to work at room temperature (RT) owing to their poor intrinsic conductivity and weak adsorptivity toward the target gas, thereby impeding their wide application. Herein, an ultrasensitive and fully recoverable room-temperature NO₂ gas sensor based on SnS₂/SnS p-n heterojunctions with an accumulation layer was fabricated. The amounts of SnS₂/SnS heterojunctions can be effectively controlled by tuning the ratios of tin and sulfur precursors in the easy one-step solvothermal synthesis. Compared with pristine SnS₂, the conductivity of SnS₂/SnS heterostructures improved considerably. Such improvement was caused by the electron transfer from p-type SnS to n-type SnS₂ because the Fermi level of SnS was higher than that of SnS₂. The sensing response of optimized SnS₂/SnS toward 4 ppm NO₂ was 660% at room temperature, which was higher than most reported sensitivity values of other two-dimensional (2D) materials at room temperature. The superior sensing response of SnS₂/SnS heterostructures was attributed to the enhanced electron transport and the increased adsorption sites caused by the SnS₂/SnS p-n heterojunctions. Moreover, the SnS₂/SnS sensor showed good selectivity and long-term stability. These achievements of SnS₂/SnS heterostructured sensors make them highly desirable for practical applications.

Influence of defect on the electrical and optical properties of A-site non-stoichiometry Ca0.67La0.22□0.11Ti(1-x)Cr x O3-δ perovskite

An investigation of the dielectric dispersion, electrical properties, scaling behavior and optical defects of Ca0.67La0.22□0.11Ti(1-x)Cr x O3-δ (CLT(1-x)Cr x ) with x = 0 and x = 0.1 compositions is presented. The square in the formula is attributed to a vacancy in A-site. Relaxation phenomena were studied with dielectric and modulus formalism, while, the conductivity mechanism was investigated using electrical conductivity. A high permittivity of around 104, low dielectric loss and low electrical conductivity of around 10-3 S cm-1 for Ca0.67La0.22TiO3 (CLT) was observed. These values make this composition interesting for microelectric applications. A comparison between the Z'' and M'' indicated that the short-range carrier motion dominates at low temperature and becomes less localized at high temperature. The optical defects of CLT and Ca0.67La0.22Ti0.9Cr0.1O3 (CLT0.9Cr0.1) were studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The results suggest the formation of a [TiO6]9- center, a (Ti3+-V O) center, and dipole defect for CLT compound and Cr3+-V O center defect for CLT0.9Cr0.1 compound. These defects are the source of the in-gap electron traps, which improve the optical properties of CLT(1-x)Cr x and hence make it an interesting optical material for different applications.

Detection of NO2 Down to One ppb Using Ion-in-Conjugation-Inspired Polymer

Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂ ) emission has severe impact on human health and the ecological environment and effective monitoring of NO₂ requires the detection limit (limit of detection) of several parts-per-billion (ppb). All organic semiconductor-based NO₂ sensors fail to reach such a level. In this work, using an ion-in-conjugation inspired-polymer (poly(3,3'-diaminobenzidine-squarine, noted as PDBS) as the sensory material, NO₂ can be detected as low as 1 ppb, which is the lowest among all reported organic NO₂ sensors. In addition, the sensor has high sensitivity, good reversibility, and long-time stability with a period longer than 120 d. Theoretical calculations reveal that PDBS offers unreacted amine and zwitterionic groups, which can offer both the H-bonding and ion-dipole interaction to NO₂ . The moderate binding energies (≈0.6 eV) offer high sensitivity, selectivity as well as good reversibility. The results demonstrate that the ion-in-conjugation can be employed to greatly improve sensitivity and selectivity in organic gas sensors by inducing both H-bonding and ion-dipole attraction.

A Review on Ultrasonic Catalytic Microbubbles Ozonation Processes: Properties, Hydroxyl Radicals Generation Pathway and Potential in Application

Ozone-based advanced oxidant processes (AOPs) have attracted remarkable attention as an alternative and effective approach for mineralization of refractory organics to innocuous substances. Key issues for ozone-based AOPs mainly focused on how to enhance ozone mass transfer and improve the production of hydroxyl radicals. Unfortunately, great efforts have been made, though, the application of ozone-based AOPs still remained in the laboratory scale due to lack of understanding of mechanisms of these hybrid processes. Besides, obtaining the balance of economical-technical feasibility is a great challenge. Ultrasonic catalytic microbubbles ozonation could be considered as a promising method, despite that there are a few studies that addressed this potential technology. Therefore, in this review, summaries about ozone-based microbubbles process, ultrasonic catalytic ozonation process, and ultrasonic catalytic microbubbles ozonation process have been provided in order to give a novel prospective about these hybrid technologies. The main influential parameters, such as initial pH, ozone dosage, intake flow rate, operating temperature, bubble size distributions, ultrasonic frequency, ultrasonic power density, and natural water constituents have also been well discussed. We truly hope that this paper will bring convenience to researchers that are devoted in the field of application of ozone-based AOPs for mineralizing refractory organics in wastewater.

Hierarchical SnS2/SnO2 nanoheterojunctions with increased active-sites and charge transfer for ultrasensitive NO2 detection

SnS2 nanosheets with unique properties are excellent candidate materials for fabricating high-performance NO2 gas sensors. However, serious restacking and aggregation during sensor fabrication have greatly impacted the sensing response. In this study, flower-like hierarchical SnS2 was prepared by a simple microwave method and partially thermally oxidized to form hierarchical SnS2/SnO2 nanocomposites to further improve the sensing performance at low operating temperature. The fabricated SnS2/SnO2 sensor exhibited ultrahigh response (resistance ratio = 51.1) toward 1 ppm NO2 at 100 °C, roughly 10.2 times higher than that of pure SnS2 nanoflowers. The excellent and enhanced NO2 sensing performances of hierarchical SnS2/SnO2 nanocomposites were attributed to the novel hierarchical structure of SnS2 and the nanoheterojunction between SnS2 and the ultrafine SnO2 nanoparticles. The SnS2/SnO2 sensors also exhibited excellent selectivity and reliable repeatability. The simple fabrication of high performance sensing materials may facilitate the large-scale production of NO2 gas sensors.

High Time-Resolution Optical Sensor for Monitoring Atmospheric Nitrogen Dioxide

High time-resolution monitoring of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) is of great importance for studying the formation mechanism of aerosols and improving air quality. Based on the Griess-Saltzman (GS) reaction, a portable NO₂ optical sensor was developed by employing a porous polypropylene membrane tube (PPMT) integrated gas permeation collector and detector. The PPMT was filled with GS reagents and covered with a coaxial jacket tube for gas collection. Its two ends were respectively fixed with a yellowish-green light-emitting diode and a photodiode for optic signal reception. NO₂ was automatically introduced through the collector by two air pumps cooperating with a homemade gas injector. Under the optimized conditions, the device presented good performance for monitoring NO₂, such as a limit of detection of 5.1 ppbv (parts per billion by volume), an intraday precision of 4.1% (RSD, relative standard deviation, n = 11, c = 100 ppbv), an interday precision of 5.7% (RSD, n = 2-3 per day for 5 days, c = 100 ppbv), an analysis time of 4.0 min, and a linearity range extended to 700 ppbv. The developed device was successfully applied to analyzing outdoor air with a comparable precision to that of the standard method of China. The high time-resolution characteristic that includes sampling 15 times per hour and a good stability for 10 days of urban air analysis had also been evaluated.

Alkaline-Earth Metals-Doped Pyrochlore Gd2Zr2O7 as Oxygen Conductors for Improved NO2 Sensing Performance

This work proposed a novel strategy to fabricate highly-stable NO₂ sensor based on a pyrochlore-phase Gd₂Zr₂O₇ oxygen conductor. The incorporation of alkaline-earth metals distinctly enhances the sensing performance of the Gd₂Zr₂O₇ based sensors. The excellent sensor based on Gd_1.95Ca_0.05Zr₂O_7+δ exhibits rapid response-recovery characteristics with the maximum response current value (ΔI = 6.4 μA), extremely short 90% responce (3 s) and 90% recovery (35 s) time towards 500 ppm NO₂ at 500 °C, which is better than that of commercial YSZ under the same condition. The ΔI value towards NO₂ is much higher than those towards other gases (CH₄, C₃H₆, C₃H₈, CO, NO, SO₂, C₂H₄, CO₂ and C₂H₆), exhibiting excellent selectivity for detecting NO₂. The response signal basically maintains a stable value of 6.4 μA after the sensors was stored for half a month and a month. The outstanding selectivity and highly stability of the NO ₂ sensors based on Gd_2-xM_xZr₂O_7+δ are expected to a promising application in automotive vehicles.

Synthesis and evaluation of novel lipopeptide as a vehicle for efficient gene delivery and gene silencing

Nucleic acid-based therapeutics have recently emerged as a new class of next generation agents for treatment and prevention of viral infection, cancer, and genetic disorders, but their wide use is limited by their relatively weak delivery into target cells. Usage of synthetic cationic amphiphiles with peptide hydrophilic domain as agents for non-viral gene delivery is an attractive approach. We developed the schemes for the synthesis of aliphatic peptides with different length of the hydrocarbon chains in hydrophobic domains and different amino acids in polar head. For the obtained derivatives we determined transfection efficiency, critical vesicle concentration, particle size, ζ-potential and aggregates stability. We have found that the transfection efficiency is increased if the ornithine is a part of polar head in an amphiphile. The most promising amphiphile for liposomal formation OrnOrnGlu(C16H33)2 was examined more carefully. It has been shown that the lipopeptide possesses low toxicity (in vitro and in vivo) and high transfection efficiency with pDNA and siRNA in different cell lines. In addition, the production of liposomes based on this lipopeptide is simple, quick and cheap. Thus OrnOrnGlu(C16H33)2 is a promising vehicle for gene delivery and gene silencing.

Role of the heterojunctions in In2O3-composite SnO2 nanorod sensors and their remarkable gas-sensing performance for NO(x) at room temperature

Establishing heterostructures, as a good strategy to improve gas sensing performance, has been studied extensively. In this research, In2O3-composite SnO2 nanorod (ICTOs) heterostructures have been prepared via electrospinning, followed by calcination. It is found that In2O3 can improve the carrier density and oxygen deficiency of SnO2. In particular, the 3ICTO (Sn : In atom ratio of 25 : 0.3) nanorods with special particle distributions show an excellent sensing response towards different concentrations of NOx at room temperature. The highest sensing response is up to 8.98 for 100 ppm NOx with a fast response time of 4.67 s, which is over 11 times higher than that of pristine SnO2 nanorods at room temperature and the lowest detection limit is down to 0.1 ppm. More significantly, it presents good stability after 30 days for NOx of low concentration (0.1 ppm and 0.5 ppm). In addition, the rational band structure model combined with the surface depletion model which describe the NOx gas sensing mechanism of 3ICTO are presented. The 3ICTO nanorods may be promising in the application of gas sensors.

Synthesis, electrochemical, fluorescence and antimicrobial studies of 2-chloro-3-amino-1,4-naphthoquinone bearing mononuclear transition metal dithiocarbamate complexes [M{κ2S,S-S2C–piperazine–C2H4N(H)ClNQ}n]

A new series of transition metal dithiocarbamate complexes displayed medium to very strong fluorescence bands, redox and interesting antimicrobial properties.

Theranostic nanoemulsions: codelivery of hydrophobic drug and hydrophilic imaging probe for cancer therapy and imaging

Aim: To develop a theranostic nanoemulsion (TNE) that can codeliver the conjugates of a hydrophobic drug paclitaxel (PTX) and a hydrophilic imaging probe sulforhodamine B (SRB). Materials & methods: The TNE was established using core-matched technology, and can achieve high encapsulation efficiency and synchronized release of the loaded cargo. It has been examined for a correlation between the dynamic uptake of PTX and the intensity of SRB imaging signal in different organs. Results & discussion: Our data demonstrate that the TNE, with improved circulation time, increases therapeutic efficacy and imaging efficiency in both drug-sensitive and drug-resistant cancer. The TNE could not satisfy the demand of visual diagnosis in the living animal because of interference. We therefore formulated a long-circulating theranostic nanoemulsion (LCTNE). Results showed that the LCTNE can meet imaging requirements in vivo. Conclusion: The LCTNE plays a good therapeutic and diagnostic role for subcutaneous tumors in the living animal.

Highly selective and sensitive near-infrared-fluorescent probes for the detection of cellular hydrogen sulfide and the imaging of H2S in mice

Herein, we report the development of two fluorescent probes for the highly selective and sensitive detection of H2S. The probes take advantage of a Cu(II)-cyclen complex, which acts as a reaction center for H2S and as a quencher of BODIPY (boron-dipyrromethene)-based fluorophores with emissions at 765 and 680 nm, respectively. These non-fluorescent probes could only be turned on by the addition of H2 S, and not by other potentially interfering biomolecules, including reactive oxygen species, cysteine, and glutathione. In a chemical system, both probes detected H2S with a detection limit of 80 nM. The probes were successfully used for the endogenous detection of H2S in HEK 293 cells, for measuring the H2S-release activity of dietary organosulfides in MCF-7 cells, and for the in vivo imaging of H2S in mice.

Determination of gaseous sulfur dioxide and its derivatives via fluorescence enhancement based on cyanine dye functionalized carbon nanodots

The development of convenient methods for sulfur dioxide and its derivatives analysis is critically important because SO2 causes worldwide serious environmental problems and human diseases. In this work, we show an unprecedented example of an energy-transfer-based fluorescence nanoprobe for selective and quantitative detection of SO2, through molecular engineering of the fluorescent carbon nanodots by a cyanine dye which have a unique reactivity to bisulfite, achieving a detection limit of 1.8 μM with a linear relationship (R(2) = 0.9987). The specific detection was not interfered with other potential coexisted species. In addition, the probe is demonstrated for the determination of SO2 gas in aqueous solution as well as for visually monitoring of SO2 gas in air. This nanomaterial based probe is easily prepared, fast responding, and thus potentially attractive for extensive application for the determination of SO2 and other similar air pollutants.

Nitrogen dioxide absorbance capacity of flavanols quantified by a NO₂-selective fluorescent probe

Taking advantage of a nitrogen dioxide (NO2)-selective probe reported by our group previously, we have developed a fluorescent assay for quantifying NO2 absorbance capacity of flavanols and related polyphenolic compounds. A non-fluorescent Ni(II) dithiocarbamate complex containing sulforhodamine fluorophore reacted rapidly and selectively with NO2 and turned on the fluorescence of the rhodamine. In the presence of radical scavengers, such as tea catechins, the rates of the fluorescence turning on by NO2 were suppressed in a dose-dependent manner. When a simple kinetic equation of the initial reaction rates is applied, the rate constants of the antioxidant reaction with NO2 can be derived using epicatechin as a reference standard, and the value is comparable to that obtained by the pulse radiolysis method. The scavenging capacity against NO2 of nine common phenolic compounds was evaluated, and their structure-activity relationship was also established. Additionally, the mechanism behind NO2 scavenging by phenolic compounds was determined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and secondary mass, using epicatechin and gallic acid as examples. Our assay serves as the first example for convenient and sensitive quantification of NO2 scavenging activity of antioxidants.

Fluorescence "turn on" detection of mercuric ion based on bis(dithiocarbamato)copper(II) complex functionalized carbon nanodots

A new "turn on" fluorescence nanosensor for selective Hg(2+) determination is reported based on bis(dithiocarbamato)copper(II) functionalized carbon nanodots (CuDTC2-CDs). The CuDTC2 complex was conjugated to the prepared amine-coated CDs by the condensation of carbon disulfide onto the nitrogen atoms in the surface amine groups, followed by the coordination of copper(II) to the resulting dithiocarbamate groups (DTC) and finally by the additional coordination of ammonium N-(dithicarbaxy) sarcosine (DTCS) to form the CuDTC2-complexing CDs. The CuDTC2 complex at surface strongly quenched the bright-blue fluorescence of the CDs by a combination of electron transfer and energy transfer mechanism. Hg(2+) could immediately switch on the fluorescence of the CuDTC2-CDs by promptly displacing the Cu(2+) in the CuDTC2 complex and thus shutting down the energy transfer pathway, in which the sensitive limit for Hg(2+) as low as 4 ppb was reached. Moreover, a paper-based sensor has been fabricated by printing the CuDTC2-CDs probe ink on a piece of cellulose acetate paper using a commercial inkjet printer. The fluorescence "turn on" on the paper provided the most conveniently visual detection of aqueous Hg(2+) ions by the observation with naked eye. The very simple and effective strategy reported here facilitates the development of portable and reliable fluorescence nanosensors for the determination of Hg(2+) in real samples.

Influence of ligand environment on the structure and properties of silver(i) dithiocarbamate cluster-based coordination polymers and dimers

Four silver dithiocarbamate complexes have been synthesized and characterized by microanalysis.1and2are tetranuclear cluster-based coordination polymers whereas3and4are dinuclear. All complexes are strongly luminescent in solid phase.
