Abstract
The direct synthesis of cyclic carbonates through oxidative carboxylation of alkenes using CO2 and O2 offers a sustainable and carbon-neutral method for CO2 utilization, which is, however, still a largely unexplored field. Here we develop a single-atom catalyst (SAC) Co-N/O-C as the earth-abundant metal catalyst for the oxidative carboxylation of styrene with CO2 and O2. Remarkably, even using the flue gas as an impure CO2 and O2 source, desired cyclic carbonate could be obtained with moderate productivity, which shows the potential for integrated CO2 capture and conversion, leveraging the high CO2 adsorption capacity of Co-N/O-C. In addition, the catalyst can be reused five times without an obvious decline in activity. Detailed characterizations and theoretical calculations elucidate the crucial role of single Co atoms in activating O2 and CO2, as well as controlling selectivity.

Abstract
Bromine (Br) is widely distributed through the lithosphere and hydrosphere, and its chemistry in the environment is affected by natural processes and anthropogenic activities. While the chemistry of Br in the atmosphere has been comprehensively explored, there has never been an overview of the chemistry of Br in soil and aquatic systems. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the sources, geochemistry, health and environmental threats, remediation approaches, and regulatory guidelines pertaining to Br pollution in terrestrial and aquatic environments. Volcanic eruptions, geothermal streams, and seawater are the major natural sources of Br. In soils and sediments, Br undergoes natural cycling between organic and inorganic forms, with bromination reactions occurring both abiotically and through microbial activity. For organisms, Br is a non-essential element; it is passively taken up by plant roots in the form of the Br- anion. Elevated Br- levels can limit plant growth on coastal soils of arid and semi-arid environments. Br is used in the chemical industry to manufacture pesticides, flame retardants, pharmaceuticals, and other products. Anthropogenic sources of organobromine contaminants in the environment are primarily wastewater treatment, fumigants, and flame retardants. When aqueous Br- reacts with oxidants in water treatment plants, it can generate brominated disinfection by-products (DBPs), and exposure to DBPs is linked to adverse human health effects including increased cancer risk. Br- can be removed from aquatic systems using adsorbents, and amelioration of soils containing excess Br- can be achieved by leaching, adding various amendments, or phytoremediation. Developing cost-effective methods for Br- removal from wastewater would help address the problem of toxic brominated DBPs. Other anthropogenic organobromines, such as polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants, are persistent, toxic, and bioaccumulative, posing a challenge in environmental remediation. Future research directives for managing Br pollution sustainably in various environmental settings are suggested here.

Abstract
Novel polyhydroxylated ammonium, imidazolium, and pyridinium salt organocatalysts were prepared through N-alkylation sequences using glycidol as the key precursor. The most active pyridinium iodide catalyst effectively promoted the carbonation of a set of terminal epoxides (80 to >95% yields) at a low catalyst loading (5 mol%), ambient pressure of CO2, and moderate temperature (75 °C) in batch operations, also demonstrating high recyclability and simple downstream separation from the reaction mixture. Moving from batch to segmented flow conditions with the operation of thermostated (75 °C) and pressurized (8.5 atm) home-made reactors significantly reduced the process time (from hours to seconds), increasing the process productivity up to 20.1 mmol(product) h-1 mmol(cat)-1, a value ~17 times higher than that in batch mode.

Abstract
The utilization of carbon dioxide (CO2) has drawn much attention because of the increasing serious environmental problems. In order to promote the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 to epoxides, a new synthesis strategy for friendly nonmetal catalyst to combine polymeric ionic liquid (PIL) with mesoporous silica (mSiO2) was proposed. By thorough characterizations, those catalysts (mSiO2-PIL-n, n = 1, 2, 3, 4) were verified that PIL with multiply catalytic active sites such as carboxyl group, imidazole ring and Br-, was mainly anchored in mesoporous SiO2 structures. Therefore, mSiO2-PIL-n exhibited excellent catalytic activity for CO2 cycloaddition reaction to epoxides under solventless and cocatalyst-free conditions. Typically, the appropriate PIL loading and specific surface area guaranteed mSiO2-PIL-2 could efficiently catalyze the cycloaddition reaction with 96% yield and 99% selectivity to the target product of propylene carbonate under the conditions of 120 °C, 2 MPa and 6 h. Additionally, the mSiO2-PIL-2 catalyst showed superior recyclability and there was no catalytic activity decrease for 10 runs of recycling due to the tightly anchored PIL on mesoporous SiO2 by copolymerization. And the catalytic activity to other substituted epoxides over mSiO2-PIL-2 was also expanded. Therefore, PIL anchored on mesoporous SiO2 by copolymerization could be a promising synthetic strategy for the efficient catalyst to combine multiple active components in a single catalyst, meanwhile, mSiO2-PIL-n exhibited an appealing catalyst candidate for the effective fixation and utilization of CO2.

Abstract
Cellulose was used as a support for immobilizing a Ni(ii) complex of 1,2-bis(4-aminophenylthio)ethane to prepare NiII(BAPTE)(NO3)2-Cell as a new organo–inorganic hybrid nanocatalyst. The properties of the prepared catalyst were studied using various analyses such as FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TGA and EDX. NiII(BAPTE)(NO3)2-Cell was employed as a reusable catalyst for the synthesis of spirooxindole derivatives via a three-component condensation of isatin, malononitrile and reactive methylene compounds. The nanocatalyst can be readily and quickly separated from the reaction mixture and can be reused for at least eight successive reaction cycles without a significant reduction in efficiency. The facile accessibility to the starting materials, use of green solvents and conducting the reactions in eco-friendly and cost-effective conditions have made this protocol a suitable method for preparing spirooxindole derivatives. NiII(BAPTE)(NO3)2-Cell as a novel cellulose supported catalyst has been prepared and characterized by various techniques including FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TGA and EDX.![]()

Abstract
The principles of green chemistry (GC) can be comprehensively implemented in green synthesis of pharmaceuticals by choosing no solvents or green solvents (preferably water), alternative reaction media, and consideration of one-pot synthesis, multicomponent reactions (MCRs), continuous processing, and process intensification approaches for atom economy and final waste reduction. The GC's execution in green synthesis can be performed using a holistic design of the active pharmaceutical ingredient's (API) life cycle, minimizing hazards and pollution, and capitalizing the resource efficiency in the synthesis technique. Thus, the presented review accounts for the comprehensive exploration of GC's principles and metrics, an appropriate implication of those ideas in each step of the reaction schemes, from raw material to an intermediate to the final product's synthesis, and the final execution of the synthesis into scalable industry-based production. For real-life examples, we have discussed the synthesis of a series of established generic pharmaceuticals, starting with the raw materials, and the intermediates of the corresponding pharmaceuticals. Researchers and industries have thoughtfully instigated a green synthesis process to control the atom economy and waste reduction to protect the environment. We have extensively discussed significant reactions relevant for green synthesis, one-pot cascade synthesis, MCRs, continuous processing, and process intensification, which may contribute to the future of green and sustainable synthesis of APIs.

Abstract
Direct structural information of confined CO2 in a micropore is important for elucidating its specific binding or activation mechanism. However, weak gas-binding ability and/or poor sample crystallinity after guest exchange hindered the development of efficient materials for CO2 incorporation, activation and conversion. Here, we present a dynamic porous coordination polymer (PCP) material with local flexibility, in which the propeller-like ligands rotate to permit CO2 trapping. This process can be characterized by X-ray structural analysis. Owing to its high affinity towards CO2 and the confinement effect, the PCP exhibits high catalytic activity, rapid transformation dynamics, even high size selectivity to different substrates. Together with an excellent stability with turnover numbers (TON) of up to 39,000 per Zn1.5 cluster of catalyst after 10 cycles for CO2 cycloaddition to form value-added cyclic carbonates, these results demonstrate that such distinctive structure is responsible for visual CO2 capture and size-selective conversion.

Abstract
Flow chemistry involves the use of channels or tubing to conduct a reaction in a continuous stream rather than in a flask. Flow equipment provides chemists with unique control over reaction parameters enhancing reactivity or in some cases enabling new reactions. This relatively young technology has received a remarkable amount of attention in the past decade with many reports on what can be done in flow. Until recently, however, the question, "Should we do this in flow?" has merely been an afterthought. This review introduces readers to the basic principles and fundamentals of flow chemistry and critically discusses recent flow chemistry accounts.

Abstract
Chemical conversion of CO2 under atmospheric pressure and metal-free conditions remains a great challenge. In this work, a series of alkanolamines, low-cost and biodegradable bases, were used to catalyze the carboxylative cyclization of propargylic amines with CO2 . Among these alkanolamines, triethanolamine (TEOA) was found to be a highly efficient organocatalyst for this important transformation at atmospheric pressure, and a series of desired products were synthesized in good to excellent yields. After the reactions, TEOA could be easily recovered and reused without obvious reduction in the efficiency. DFT studies revealed that TEOA may activate CO2 to form a ring-shaped carbonate intermediate that plays an important role in the catalysis of the reaction. This finding provides an effective and environmentally friendly alternative route for the production of 2-oxazolidinones.
