Slow magnetic relaxation in a heteroleptic anilate-based DyIII metal-organic framework

Novel heteroleptic anilate-based lanthanide MOFs (LnIII = Tb, Dy, Ho) have been obtained under hydrothermal conditions by the ancillary ligand synthetic strategy. These structurally isomorphous species contain octacoordinated LnIII ions with coordination polyhedra approaching an ideal D2d symmetry, best described by a distorted biaugmented trigonal prismatic C2v geometry. In the whole series, only the Dy-MOF exhibits SMM behaviour.

Pressure-Induced Structural, Optical and Magnetic Modifications in Lanthanide Single-Molecule Magnets

Lanthanide Single-Molecule Magnets are fascinating objects that break magnetic performance records with observable magnetic bistability at the boiling temperature of liquid nitrogen, paving the way for potential applications in high-density data storage. The switching of lanthanide SMM has been successfully achieved using several external stimuli such as redox reaction, pH titration, light irradiation or solvation/desolvation thanks to the high sensitivity of the magnetic anisotropy to any structural change in the lanthanide surrounding. Nevertheless, the use of applied high pressure as an external stimulus is largely underused, especially considering that it can be combined with high pressure X-ray diffraction to establish a complementary structure-property relationship. This Concept article summarizes the few relevant examples of investigations of lanthanide SMMs under applied high pressure, provides conclusions on the effect of such stimulus on molecular structures and magnetic anisotropy, and finally draws perspective on the future development of magnetic measurements under applied pressure.

Spectroscopic techniques to probe magnetic anisotropy and spin-phonon coupling in metal complexes

Magnetism of molecular quantum materials such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs) has been actively studied for potential applications in the new generation of high-density data storage using SMMs and quantum information science. Magnetic anisotropy and spin-phonon coupling are two key properties of d- and f-metal complexes. Here, phonons refer to both intermolecular and intramolecular vibrations. Direct determination of magnetic anisotropy and experimental studies of spin-phonon coupling are critical to the understanding of molecular magnetism. This article discusses our recent approach in using three complementary techniques, far-IR and Raman magneto-spectroscopies (FIRMS and RaMS, respectively) and inelastic neutron scatterings (INS), to determine magnetic excited states. Spin-phonon couplings are observed in FIRMS and RaMS. DFT phonon calculations give energies and symmetries of phonons as well as calculated INS spectra which help identify magnetic peaks in experimental INS spectra.

Isotopic enrichment in lanthanide coordination complexes: contribution to single-molecule magnets and spin qudit insights

Lanthanide Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) fascinate the scientific community due to their plethora of potential applications ranging from data storage to spintronic devices and quantum computing. This review article proposes a comprehensive description of the influence of the nuclear spin, i.e. hyperfine interaction, on the magnetic properties of lanthanide SMMs and on quantum information processing of qudit. This influence is analysed for non-Kramers and Kramers lanthanide SMMs as well as for the electronic distribution of the electron in 4f orbitals i.e. oblate and prolate ions. Then the role of magnetic interactions in isotopically enriched polynuclear Dy(III) SMMs is discussed. Finally the possible effect of superhyperfine interaction due to the nuclear spin of elements originating from the surrounding of the lanthanide centre is analyzed. The effect of nuclear spin on the dynamics of the lanthanide SMMs is demonstrated using different techniques such as magnetometry, muon spectroscopy (μ-SR), and Mössbauer and Resonance Vibrational Spectroscopies.

Strategies to quench quantum tunneling of magnetization in lanthanide single molecule magnets

Enhancing blocking temperature (T_B) is one of the holy grails in Single Molecule Magnets(SMMs), as any future potential application in this class of molecules is directly correlated to this parameter. Among many factors contributing to a reduction of T_B value, Quantum Tunnelling of Magnetisation (QTM), a phenomenon that is a curse or a blessing based on the application sought after, tops the list. Theoretical tools based on density functional and ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO methods have played a prominent role in estimating various spin Hamiltonian parameters and establishing the mechanism of magnetization relaxation in this class of molecules. Particularly, various strategies to quench QTM effects go hand-in-hand with experiments, and different methods proposed to quell QTM effects are scattered in the literature. In this perspective, we have explored various approaches that are proposed in the literature to quench QTM effects, and these include the role of (i) local symmetry of lanthanides, (ii) super-exchange interaction in {3d-4f} complexes, (iii) direct-exchange interaction in {radical-4f} and metal-metal bonded complexes to suppress the QTM, (iv) utilizing external stimuli such as an electric field or pressure to modulate the QTM and (v) avoiding QTM effects by stabilising toroidal states in 4f and {3d-4f} clusters. We believe the strategies summarized here will help to design new-generation SMMs.

Multi-Technique Experimental Benchmarking of the Local Magnetic Anisotropy of a Cobalt(II) Single-Ion Magnet

A comprehensive understanding of the ligand field and its influence on the degeneracy and population of d-orbitals in a specific coordination environment are crucial for the rational design and enhancement of magnetic anisotropy of single-ion magnets (SIMs). Herein, we report the synthesis and comprehensive magnetic characterization of a highly anisotropic Co^II SIM, [L₂Co](TBA)₂ (L is an N,N'-chelating oxanilido ligand), that is stable under ambient conditions. Dynamic magnetization measurements show that this SIM exhibits a large energy barrier to spin reversal U _eff > 300 K and magnetic blocking up to 3.5 K, and the property is retained in a frozen solution. Low-temperature single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction used to determine the experimental electron density gave access to Co d-orbital populations and a derived U _eff, 261 cm^-1, when the coupling between the d _{x ² - y ²} and d_xy orbitals is taken into account, in very good agreement with ab initio calculations and superconducting quantum interference device results. Powder and single-crystal polarized neutron diffraction (PNPD, PND) have been used to quantify the magnetic anisotropy via the atomic susceptibility tensor, revealing that the easy axis of magnetization is pointing along the N-Co-N' bisectors of the N,N'-chelating ligands (3.4° offset), close to the molecular axis, in good agreement with complete active space self-consistent field/N-electron valence perturbation theory to second order ab initio calculations. This study provides benchmarking for two methods, PNPD and single-crystal PND, on the same 3d SIM, and key benchmarking for current theoretical methods to determine local magnetic anisotropy parameters.

The coexistence of long τQTM and high Ueff as a concise criterion for a good single-molecule magnet: a theoretical case study of square antiprism dysprosium single-ion magnets

A systematic theoretical study is performed on a group of 16 square antiprism dysprosium single-ion magnets. Based on ab initio calculations, the quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) time, i.e., τ_QTM, and effective barrier of magnetic reversal, U_eff, are theoretically predicted. The theoretical τ_QTM is able to identify the ones with the longest QTM time with small numerical deviations. Similar results occur with respect to U_eff too. The systems possessing the best single-molecule magnet (SMM) properties here are just the ones having both the longest τ_QTM and the highest U_eff, from either experiment or theory. Thus, our results suggest the coexistence of long τ_QTM and high U_eff to be a criterion for high-performance SMMs. Although having its own limits, this criterion is easy to be applied in a large number of systems since both τ_QTM and U_eff could be predicted by theory with satisfactory efficiency and reliability. Therefore, this concise criterion could provide screened candidates for high-performance SMMs quickly and, hence, ease the burden of further exploration aiming for a higher degree of precision. This screening is important since the further exploration could easily demand tens or even hundreds of ab initio calculations for a single SMM. A semi-quantitative crystal field (CF) analysis is performed and shown here to be capable of indicating the general trends in a more chemically intuitive way. This analysis could help to identify the most important coordinating atoms for both diagonal and non-diagonal CF components. Thus, it could give some direct clues for improving the SMM properties: reducing the distance of the axial atom to the central ion, rotating the axial atom closer to the easy axis or increasing the amount of its negative charge. Correspondingly, opposite operations on the equatorial atom could give the same result.

3-Pyridylacetic-Based Lanthanide Complexes Exhibiting Magnetic Entropy Changes, Single-Molecule Magnet, and Fluorescence

Four complexes from lanthanides, 3-pyridylacetate, and 1,10-phenanthroline, formulated as [Ln2(3-PAA)2(μ-Cl)2(phen)4](ClO4)2 [Ln = Gd(1), Dy(2), Eu(3), Tb(4), 3-PAA = 3-pyridylacetic acid, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline], were obtained. The four compounds were characterized by IR spectra, thermogravimetric analyses, powder X-ray diffraction, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 1-4 are isomorphous, and they have a dinuclear structure. Magnetic studies reveal that 1 shows the magnetocaloric effect with -ΔS m max = 19.03 J kg-1 K-1 at 2 K for ΔH = 5 T, and 2 displays a field-induced single-molecule magnet with U eff = 19.02 K. The photoluminescent spectra of 3 and 4 exhibit strong characteristic emission, which demonstrate that the ligand-to-EuIII/TbIII energy transfer is efficient.

Slow relaxation of Dy(III) single-ion magnets dominated by the simultaneous binding of chelating ligands in low-symmetry ligand-fields

Electronic effect and geometry distortion of low-symmetry ligand-field on the anisotropy barrier (U_eff) of spin reversal have been compared in three Dy(III) single-ion magnets through the simultaneous binding of chelating ligands. The substitution of N,O-salicylaldoxime by N,N'-1,10-phenanthroline in the distorted triangular-dodecahedronal field sharply decreases the U_eff by 286 K due to an increase in non-preferred transverse anisotropy, while the geometry distortion with CShM = 1.569 went down to 1.376 only lowering the U_eff by 12 K. The co-coordination strategy of heterodonor ligands highlights the importance of ligand-surroundings on the relaxation dynamics.

Solvato Modulation of the Magnetic Memory in Isotopically Enriched Erbium Polyoxometalate

Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) property is by essence molecular, while commonly measured in solid crystalline state. Solvent crystallization molecules are usually neglected in the analysis and interpretation of solid-state properties. The solvation/desolvation process in the polyoxometalate(POM)-based Na₉ [Er(W₅ O₁₈ )₂ ] ⋅ 35 H₂ O SMM demonstrates that the dehydrated form relaxes more than 1000 times faster than the initial state, while the rehydration process allows the quasi complete recovering of the initial magnetic behaviour. This dehydration process is monitored by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and temperature-dependent X-ray powder diffraction, and rationalized by periodic quantum chemical calculations evidencing the tremendous role of the labile water molecules in the stability of the edifice. Ab-initio calculations highlight that sodium ions localization in the structure drive the magnetic responses. Isotopic enrichment with nuclear spin free (¹⁶⁶ Er, I=0) Er^III ions shows that the relaxation dynamics in the quantum regime depends on the nuclear spin.

Dipyridyl-Decorated Nitronyl Nitroxide-DyIII Single-Molecule Magnet with a Record Energy Barrier of 146 K

A nitronyl nitroxide biradical with a capping N-donor group was discovered to improve single-molecule-magnet behavior of the Dy-biradical cluster, generating a magnetic reversal barrier of 146 K. As far as we know, the effective energy barrier of the Dy compound is largest in the nitronyl nitroxide 4f system by far.

A Journey in Lanthanide Coordination Chemistry: From Evaporable Dimers to Magnetic Materials and Luminescent Devices

ConspectusLanthanide ions are prime ingredients for the design of compounds, materials, and devices with unique magnetic and optical properties. Accordingly, coordination chemistry is one of the best tools for building molecular edifices from these ions because it allows careful control of the ions' environment and of the dimensionality of the final compound.In this Account, we review our results on lanthanide-based dimers. We show how a pure fundamental study on lanthanide coordination chemistry allows the investigation of a full continuum of results from the compound to materials and then to devices. The conversion of molecules into materials is a tricky task because it requires strong molecular robustness toward the surface deposition processes as well as the preservation and detectability of the molecular properties in the material. Additionally, the passage of a material toward a device implies a material with a given function, for example, a tailored response to an external stimulus.To do so, we targeted neutral and isolated molecules whose transfer on surfaces by chemi- or physisorption is much easier than that of charged molecules or extended coordination networks. Then, we focused on molecules with very strong evaporability to avoid wet chemistry deposition processes that are more likely to damage the molecules and/or distort their geometries.We thus designed lanthanide dimers based on fluorinated β-diketonates and pyridine-N-oxide ligands. As expected, they show remarkable evaporability but also strong luminescence and interesting magnetic behavior because they behave as single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Ligand substitutions and stoichiometric modifications allow the optimization of the geometric organization of the dimers in the crystal packing as well as their evaporability, SMM behavior, luminescent properties, or their ability to be anchored on surfaces. Most of all, this family of molecules shows a strong ability to form thick films on various substrates. This allows converting these molecules to magnetic materials and luminescent devices.Magnetic materials can be designed by creating thick films of the dimers deposited on gold. These films have been designed and investigated with the most advanced techniques of on-surface imaging (atomic force microscopy, AFM), on-surface physicochemical characterization (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), time of flight-secondary ion mass spectroscopy (Tof-SIMS)), and on-surface magnetic investigation (low-energy muon spin relaxation (LE-μSR)). Contrary to what was previously observed on other SMM films, no depth dependence of the SMM behavior was observed. This means that the dimers do not suffer from the vacuum or substrate interface and behave similarly, whatever their localization. This exceptional magnetic robustness is a key ingredient in the creation of materials for molecular magnetic data storage.Luminescent devices can be obtained by layering molecular films of the dimers with a copper-rich solid-state electrolyte between ITO/Pt electrodes. The electromigration of Cu²⁺ ions into films of Eu³⁺, Tb³⁺, and Dy³⁺ dimers quenches their luminescence. This luminescence tuning by electromigration is reversible, and this setup can be considered to be a proof of concept of full solid-state luminescent device where reversible coding can be tailored by an electric field. It is envisioned for optical data storage purposes. In the future, it could also benefit from the SMM properties of the molecules to pave the way toward multifunctional molecular data storage devices.

Ytterbium-Centered Isotopic Enrichment Leading to a Zero-Field Single-Molecule Magnet

An unprecedented combination of isotopic enrichment and magnetic dilution approaches for a prolate ytterbium(III)-based complex was performed. It results in the appearance of the first observations of a nuclear spin effect on both quantum tunneling of magnetization and slow magnetic relaxation for an ytterbium complex under a zero applied field.

Slow magnetic relaxation in a homo dinuclear Dy(iii) complex in a pentagonal bipyramidal geometry

We hereby report a dinuclear Dy(iii) complex, [Dy(LH₃)Cl₂]₂·2Et₂O (1) (LH₄ = 2,3-dihydroxybenzylidene)-2-(hydroxyimino)propanehydrazide where both the metal centres are in a pentagonal bipyramidal (PBP) geometry with the axial positions being occupied by negatively charged Cl^- ions. The complex as well as it's 10% diluted analogue (1₁₀) do not show zero-field SMM behaviour. However, in the presence of small optimum dc fields the slow relaxation of magnetization was displayed. The effective energy barrier for 1₁₀ at 800 Oe of applied field was extracted as 83(17) K with τ₀ = 2(4) × 10^-12 s. Through a combined experimental and ab initio electronic structure calculations studies we have thoroughly analysed the role of the ligand field around the Dy(iii), present in pentagonal bipyramidal geometry, in contributing to the slow relaxation of magnetization.

Redox Modulation of Field-Induced Tetrathiafulvalene-Based Single-Molecule Magnets of Dysprosium

The complexes [Dy2(tta)6(H2SQ)] (Dy-H2SQ) and [Dy2(tta)6(Q)]·2CH2Cl2 (Dy-Q) (tta− = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate) were obtained from the coordination reaction of the Dy(tta)3·2H2O units with the 2,2′-benzene-1,4-diylbis(6-hydroxy-4,7-di-tert-butyl-1,3-benzodithiol-2-ylium-5-olate ligand (H2SQ) and its oxidized form 2,2′-cyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-diylidenebis(4,7-di-tert-butyl-1,3-benzodithiole-5,6-dione (Q). The chemical oxidation of H2SQ in Q induced an increase in the coordination number from 7 to 8 around the DyIII ions and by consequence a modulation of the field-induced Single-Molecule Magnet behavior. Computational results rationalized the magnetic properties of each of the dinuclear complexes.

Dysprosium Single-Molecule Magnets Involving 1,10-Phenantroline-5,6-dione Ligand

The two mononuclear complexes of the formula [Dy(tta)3(L)] (1) and [Dy(hfac)3(L)] (2) (where tta- = 2-thenoytrifluoroacetylacetonate and hfac- = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate) were obtained from the coordination reaction of the Dy(tta)3·2H2O or Dy(hfac)3·2H2O units with the 1,10-phenantroline-5,6-dione ligand (L). Their structures have been determined by X-ray diffraction studies on single crystals, and they revealed a supramolecular assembly of tetramers through σ-π interactions. Both complexes displayed a Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior without an external applied magnetic field. Magnetic relaxation happened through Orbach, Raman and Quantum Tunneling of the Magnetization (QTM). Wavefunction theory calculations were realized to rationalize the magnetic properties.

Redox- and solvato-magnetic switching in a tetrathiafulvalene-based triad single-molecule magnet

Simultaneous redox and solvato-magnetic switching was achieved for a dinuclear dysprosium single-molecule magnet involving an extended tetrathiafulvalene fused semiquinone based triad.

Self-assembly of a terbium(III) 1D coordination polymer on mica

The terbium(III) ion is a particularly suitable candidate for the creation of surface-based magnetic and luminescent devices. In the present work, we report the epitaxial growth of needle-like objects composed of [Tb(hfac)₃·2H₂O] _n (where hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) polymeric units on muscovite mica, which is observed by atomic force microscopy. The needle-like shape mimics the structure observed in the crystalline bulk material. The growth of this molecular organization is assisted by water adsorption on the freshly air-cleaved muscovite mica. This deposition technique allows for the observation of a significant amount of nanochains grown along three preferential directions 60° apart from another. The magnetic properties and the luminescence of the nanochains can be detected without the need of surface-dedicated instrumentation. The intermediate value of the observed luminescence lifetime of the deposits (132 µs) compared to that of the bulk (375 µs) and the CHCl₃ solution (13 µs) further reinforces the idea of water-induced growth.

Redox-Active Dysprosium Single-Molecule Magnet: Spectro-Electrochemistry and Theoretical Investigations

The mononuclear single-molecule magnet (SMM) [Dy(tta)3(L)]⋅C6H14 (1) (where tta− = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate and L = 4,5-bis(propylthio)-tetrathiafulvalene-2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole-methyl-2-pyridine) was studied by spectro-electrochemistry. The resulting electronic spectra of the three oxidation states 1, 1+∙, and 12+ were rationalized by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations starting from the DFT optimized structures. The modulation of the magnetic anisotropy of the DyIII center upon oxidation was also inspected at the Complete Active Space Self-Consistent Field (CASSCF) level of calculation.

Tetrathiafulvalene-Based Helicene Ligand in the Design of a Dysprosium Field-Induced Single-Molecule Magnet

The design of a coordination complex that involves a ligand combining both a tetrathiafulvalene core and a helicene fragment was achieved thanks to the reaction between the new 2-{1-[2-methyl[6]helicene]-4,5-[4,5-bis(propylthio)tetrathiafulvalenyl]-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl}pyridine ligand (L) and the Dy(hfac)₃·2H₂O metalloprecursor. Magnetic investigations showed field-induced single-molecule-magnet (SMM) behavior under an applied magnetic field of 1000 Oe for [Dy(hfac)₃(L)]·0.5CH₂Cl₂, while experimentally oriented single-crystal magnetic measurements allowed for determination of the magnetic anisotropy orientation. The magnetic behavior was rationalized through ab initio CASSCF/SI-SO calculations. This redox-active chiral-field-induced SMM paves the way for the design of switchable-multiproperty SMMs.

A redox-active chiral-field-induced single-molecule magnet was achieved through a coordination reaction of the [Dy(hfac)₃] precursor to a ligand that combines a redox-active tetrathiafulvalene core and a chiral carbo[6]helicene fragment. This multiproperty system was characterized using X-ray crystallography, magnetism, and ab initio calculations.

Field-Induced Dysprosium Single-Molecule Magnet Based on a Redox-Active Fused 1,10-Phenanthroline-Tetrathiafulvalene-1,10-Phenanthroline Bridging Triad

Tetrathiafulvalene and 1,10-phenanthroline moieties present, respectively remarkable redox-active and complexation activities. In this work, we investigated the coordination reaction between the bis(1,10-phenanthro[5,6-b])tetrathiafulvalene triad (L) and the Dy(hfac)₃·2H₂O metallo precursor. The resulting {[Dy₂(hfac)₆(L)]·CH₂Cl₂·C₆H₁₄}₃ (1) dinuclear complex showed a crystal structure in which the triad L bridged two terminal Dy(hfac)₃ units and the supramolecular co-planar arrangement of the triads is driven by donor-acceptor interactions. The frequency dependence of the out-of-phase component of the magnetic susceptibility highlights three distinct maxima under a 2000 Oe static applied magnetic field, a sign that 1 displays a Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior with multiple magnetic relaxations. Ab initio calculations rationalized the Ising character of the magnetic anisotropy of the Dy^III ions and showed that the main anisotropy axes are perpendicular to the co-planar arrangement of the triads. Single-crystal rotating magnetometry confirms the orientation of the main magnetic axis. Finally combining structural analysis and probability of magnetic relaxation pathways through Quantum Tunneling of the Magnetization (QTM) vs. excited states (Orbach), each Dy^III center has been attributed to one of the three observed magnetic relaxation times. Such coordination compound can be considered as an ideal candidate to perform redox-magnetic switching.

Slow Relaxation of the Magnetization in Bis-Decorated Chiral Helicene-Based Coordination Complexes of Lanthanides

The complexes [Ln2(hfac)6(L)]·nC6H14 (Ln = Dy (1) n = 0, Yb (2) n = 1) with the L chiral 3,14-di-(2-pyridyl)-4,13-diaza[6]helicene ligand (hfac− = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate) have been synthesized in their racemic form and structurally and magnetically characterized. Both complexes behave as field-induced single molecule magnets in the crystalline phase. These magnetic properties were rationalized by ab initio calculations.
