Mobility of Long-Lived Fullerene Radical in Solid State and Nonlinear Temperature Dependence

Synthesis of indano[60]fullerene thioketone and its application in organic solar cells

Evaporable indano[60]fullerene ketone (FIDO) was converted to indano[60]fullerene thioketone (FIDS) in high yield by using Lawesson's reagent. Three compounds with different substituents in para position were successfully converted to the corresponding thioketones, showing that the reaction tolerates compounds with electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents. Computational studies with density functional theory revealed the unique vibrations of the thioketone group in FIDS. The molecular structure of FIDS was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Bulk heterojunction organic solar cells using three evaporable fullerene derivatives (FIDO, FIDS, C60) as electron-acceptors were compared, and the open-circuit voltage with FIDS was 0.16 V higher than that with C60.

Synthesis of neutral Li-endohedral PCBM: an n-dopant for fullerene derivatives

Li@PCBM, the first neutral Li@C₆₀ derivative, was synthesized. The Li@PCBM exists in a monomer-dimer equilibrium in solution but as a monomer in the PCBM matrix. The fully dispersed Li@PCBM n-doped the surrounding empty PCBM, raising the Fermi level by 0.13 eV compared with the undoped PCBM film. The hybrid films were utilized as an ETL for PSCs, promoting the efficiency of the device.

Coupling of two curved polyaromatic radical-anions: stabilization of dimers by counterions

In this study, a comprehensive theoretical investigation of both kinetic and thermodynamic stabilities was performed for dimeric dianionic systems (C₂₀H₁₀)₂^2- and (C₂₈H₁₄)₂^2-, neutralized by two alkali metal cations. The influence of the counterions was of primary interest. The impact of the additional/spectator ligand(s) was elucidated by considering adducts with four molecules of diglyme or two molecules of 18-crown-6 ether. Importantly, both types of systems - in the form of contact-ion pair (CIP) and solvent-separated ion pair (SSIP) - were considered. The SSIP set was augmented by the adduct, in which the dimeric dianionic species were neutralized with purely organic cations N(CH₃)₄⁺ and P(CH₃)₄⁺. Detailed analysis of the bonding revealed that the presence of the counterions made these systems thermodynamically stable. This finding is in sharp contrast with results obtained for isolated (PAH)₂^2- systems, which were previously found to be thermodynamically unstable, but kinetically persistent. The introduction of the alkali metal cations to the system significantly increases the ionic term (ΔE_elstat), whereas the repulsive ΔE_Pauli one was found to be substantially reduced. Considering that the orbital component (ΔE_orb) exhibited only a moderate decrease and the preparation energy (ΔE_prep) showed no changes, the above-mentioned changes in ΔE_elstat and ΔE_Pauli provided a clear explanation for the increase of the thermodynamic stability of the target species. Importantly, a clear correlation between the size of the alkali metal cation and stability of the target dimeric product was established. Thermodynamic stability of the system rises with a decrease in the size of M⁺ due to enlargement of the ΔE_orb. Evaluated energy barriers (as spin-crossing points between singlet and triplet energy surfaces) were found to be equal to +15.85 kcal mol^-1 and +18.5 kcal mol^-1 for [(Cs⁺)₂{(C₂₀H₁₀)₂^2-}] and [(Cs⁺)₂{(C₂₈H₁₄)₂^2-}], respectively, which is substantially higher than those calculated for isolated (PAH)₂^2- systems (+10.00 kcal mol^-1 for (C₂₀H₁₀)₂^2- and +12.35 kcal mol^-1 for (C₂₈H₁₄)₂^2-). Thus, this study identified the presence of counterions as the key factor, which have a dramatic influence on the thermodynamic and kinetic stabilities of the aimed dianionic dimeric systems, which are formed by two curved polyaromatic monoanion-radicals.

Dimerization of indenocorannulene radicals: imposing stability through increasing strain and curvature

One-electron reduction of bowl-shaped indenocorannulene affords a new stable dimeric dianion, as confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy, and DFT calculations.

Mono-reduced Corannulene: To Couple and Not to Couple in One Crystal

One-electron reduction of corannulene, C₂₀ H₁₀ , with Li metal in diglyme resulted in crystallization of [{Li⁺ (diglyme)₂ }₄ (C₂₀ H₁₀ ^.- )₂ (C₂₀ H₁₀ -C₂₀ H₁₀ )^2- ] (1), as revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This hybrid product contains two corannulene monoanion-radicals along with a dianionic dimer, crystallized with four Li⁺ ions wrapped by diglyme molecules. The dimeric (C₂₀ H₁₀ -C₂₀ H₁₀ )^2- anion provides the first crystallographically confirmed example of spontaneous radical dimerization for C₂₀ H₁₀ ^.- . The C-C bond length between the two C₂₀ H₁₀ ^.- bowls of 1.588(5) Å is consistent with the single σ-bond character of the linker. The trans-disposition of two bowls in the centrosymmetric (C₂₀ H₁₀ -C₂₀ H₁₀ )^2- dimer is observed with the torsion angle around the central C-C bond of 180°. Comprehensive theoretical analysis of formation/decomposition processes of the dimeric dianion has been carried out in order to evaluate the nature of bonding and energetics of the C₂₀ H₁₀ ^.- coupling. It is found that such σ-bonded dimers are thermodynamically unstable due to large preparation energy and repulsive Pauli component of the bonding, but kinetically persistent due to a high energy barrier provided by the existing spin-crossing point.

Synthesis of Fullerene-Fluorene Dyads through the Platinum-Catalyzed Reactions of [60]Fullerene with 9-Ethynyl-9H-fluoren-9-yl Carboxylates

The single-step regio- and stereoselective platinum-catalyzed reactions of [60]fullerene with a series of 9-ethynyl-9H-fluoren-9-yl carboxylates afforded fullerene-fluorene dyads in their [2 + 2] cycloaddition forms. The presented reactions represent the first examples of the use of easily accessible fluorenyl carboxylates as fluorenylideneallene precursors. In addition, the single-crystal X-ray structure of one of the dyads reveals a distorted cyclobutane ring. Furthermore, the dyad forms a layered structure with close-packed arrays of C₆₀ spheres in its crystals.

Site-Directed Dimerization of Bowl-Shaped Radical Anions to Form a σ-Bonded Dibenzocorannulene Dimer

Designed site-directed dimerization of the monoanion radicals of a π-bowl in the solid state is reported. Dibenzo[a,g]corannulene (C₂₈ H₁₄ ) was selected based on the asymmetry of the charge/spin localization in the C₂₈ H₁₄^.- anion. Controlled one-electron reduction of C₂₈ H₁₄ with Cs metal in diglyme resulted in crystallization of a new dimer, [{Cs⁺ (diglyme)}₂ (C₂₈ H₁₄ -C₂₈ H₁₄ )^2- ] (1), as revealed by single crystal X-ray diffraction study performed in a broad range of temperatures. The C-C bond length between two C₂₈ H₁₄^.- bowls (1.560(8) Å) measured at -143 °C does not significantly change upon heating of the crystal to +67 °C. The single σ-bond character of the C-C linker is confirmed by calculations. The trans-disposition of two bowls in 1 is observed with the torsion angles around the central C-C bond of 172.3(5)° and 173.5(5)°. A systematic theoretical evaluation of dimerization pathways of C₂₈ H₁₄^.- radicals confirmed that the trans-isomer found in 1 is energetically favored.

Liquid-Crystalline Tris[60]fullerodendrimers

Liquid-crystalline tris[60]fullerodendrimers based on first- and second-generation poly(arylester)dendrons carrying cyanobiphenyl mesogens were synthesized for the first time by the olefin cross-metathesis reaction between type I (terminal) and type II (α,β-unsaturated carbonyl) olefinic precursors, using a second-generation Grubbs or Hoveyda-Grubbs catalyst. The modular synthetic approach developed here also allowed the selective preparation of the [60]fullerene-free, mono[60]fullerodendrimer, and bis[60]fullerodendrimer derivatives from the appropriate precursors. As revealed by polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and small-angle X-ray scattering, all of the materials displayed liquid-crystalline properties. In agreement with the nature of the dendritic building blocks, the emergence of lamellar mesophases (smectic C and/or smectic A phases), with the segregation of the various constitutive parts, was systematically observed. The small variation of the mesomorphic temperature range and of the mesophase stability suggested that the mesomorphism is essentially dominated by the dendrimer itself and is regulated by a subtle adaptive mechanism, in which the proportion of monolayering and bilayering arrangements of the multisegregated lamellar mesophases is modified in order to compensate the space requirements of each of the elementary building blocks, namely, the [60]fullerene units, the cyanobiphenyl mesogens, and the dendritic matrix.

Spatial aromatic fences of metal-organic frameworks for manipulating the electron spin of a fulleropyrrolidine nitroxide radical

The electron spin properties of a fulleropyrrolidine nitroxide radical incarcerated in the pores of MOF-177 and MIL-53 respectively were investigated for the first time. It was found that the spatial confinement effect and intramolecular interactions in these two solid-state spin systems lead to dramatically distinctive spin dynamics.

A mechanistic study of manganese(iii) acetate-mediated phosphonyl group additions to [60]- and [70]-fullerenes: the oxidative-ion-transfer mechanism vs. free radical addition

The phosphonylation of fullerenes with HP(O)(OAlk)₂ and Mn(OAc)₃·2H₂O occurs via the oxidative-ion-transfer mechanism involving the intermediate Mn(OAc)₂P(O)(OAlk)₂ rather than by the free radical process.

Hiding and recovering electrons in a dimetallic endohedral fullerene: air-stable products from radical additions

Fullerenyl radicals can be generated by addition of a free radical to a fullerene surface, by nucleophilic addition followed by one-electron oxidation, or by thermal dissociation of singly bonded fullerene dimers. However, fullerenyl radicals are usually very reactive and generally cannot be isolated. On the contrary, we have found that the reactions of the dimetallic endofullerenes, La2@Ih-C80 and La2@D5h-C80, with 3-chloro-5,6-diphenyltriazine resulted in mono-addition of the triazinyl radical to the fullerene cages to yield isolable fullerenyl radicals. The unusual stability of these fullerenyl radicals arises from the confinement of the unpaired electron to an internal, metal-metal bonding orbital. Accordingly, the fullerene cage protects the radical center from other reactive species. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the fullerenyl radical adduct of La2@Ih-C80 reacts with toluene to afford additional benzylation. Interestingly, the benzylated derivative is diamagnetic in solution, while it forms a paramagnetic dimer when crystallized.

Polarizability as a landmark property for fullerene chemistry and materials science

The review summarizes data on dipole polarizability of fullerenes and their derivatives, covering the most widespread classes of fullerene-containing molecules (fullerenes, fullerene exohedral derivatives, fullerene dimers, endofullerenes, fullerene ions, and derivatives with ionic bonds).
