Metal–Organic Frameworks with Mechanically Interlocked Pillars: Controlling Ring Dynamics in the Solid-State via a Reversible Phase Change

Mechanical bonding of rigid MORFs using a tetratopic rotaxane

The preparation of highly rigid cobalt(II)- and copper(II)-organic frameworks incorporating a tetralactam [2]rotaxane as a ligand is described. The interlocked ligand is functionalized with two pairs of carboxylate groups placed at each counterpart, thus limiting its dynamics within the crystal. The solid structure of the metal-organic rotaxane frameworks showed different, unprecedented polycatenation modes of grids, depending on the employed metal, providing great rigidity to the structures. This rigidity has been evaluated by using single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses of the cobalt(II)-organic frameworks embedded in different solvents, observing that the lattices remain unchanged. Thus, this research demonstrates that rigid and robust materials with permanent porosity can be achieved using dynamic ligands.

Incorporating Two Crown Ether Struts into the Backbone of Robust Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks as Custom-Designed Efficient Collectors for Radioactive Metal Ions

The incorporation of crown ether into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is garnered significant attention because these macrocyclic units can fine-tune the inherent properties of the frameworks. However, the synthesis of flexible crown ethers with precise structures as the fundamental building blocks of crystalline MOFs remains a challenging endeavor, with only a limited number of transition metal examples existing to date. Herein, 18-crown-6 and 24-crown-8 struts are successfully incorporated into the skeleton of zirconium-based MOFs to obtain two new and stable crown ether-based MOFs, denoted as ZJU-X100 and ZJU-X102. These newly developed MOFs displayed high porosity and remarkable stability when exposed to various solvents, boiling water, pH values, and even concentrated HCl conditions. Thanks to their highly ordered porous structure and high-density embedding of specific binding sites within tubular channels, these two MOFs exhibited extremely fast sorption kinetics and demonstrated outstanding performance in the uptake of strontium and cesium ions, respectively. Furthermore, the structures of Sr-adsorbed ZJU-X100 and Cs-adsorbed ZJU-X102 are solved and confirmed the precise location of Sr2+/Cs+ in the cavity of 18-crown-6/24-crown-8. This makes modular mosaic of different crown ethers into the skeleton of stable zirconium-based MOFs possible and promote such materials have broad applications in sorption, sensing, and catalysis.

BP23C7: high-yield synthesis and application in constructing [3]rotaxanes and responsive pseudo[2]rotaxanes

A biphenyl-23-crown-7 ether (BP23C7) is synthesized in 86% yield from commercially available starting materials. BP23C7 forms pseudo[2]rotaxane with a dibenzylammonium ion (DBA+), exhibiting a good association constant value (ka = 1 × 103 M-1). Subsequently, fluorophoric properties of BP23C7 and anthracene terminated axles are blended to create responsive pseudo[2]rotaxanes. The "turn-on" fluorescence response of BP23C7 due to the addition of fluoride and chloride anions to pseudo[2]rotaxane systems has been investigated. Concomitant fluorescence quenching of the anthracene moiety of corresponding axles due to ion-pair formation has been addressed. Furthermore, two variants of [23]crown ethers, i.e. BP23C7 and o-xylene-23-crown-7 ether (X23C7), are applied for constructing homo[3]rotaxane architectures. A half-axle comprising of DBA+ moiety and a terminal olefin is mixed separately with two [23]crown ethers and subjected to self-metathesis using Grubbs' first-generation catalyst.

Modulation of Rotational Dynamics in Halogen-Bonded Cocrystalline Solids

Dynamic processes are responsible for the functionality of a range of materials, biomolecules, and catalysts. We report a detailed systematic study of the modulation of methyl rotational dynamics via the direct and the indirect influence of noncovalent halogen bonds. For this purpose, a novel series of cocrystalline architectures featuring halogen bonds (XB) to tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) is designed and prepared using gas-phase, solution, and solid-state mechanochemical methods. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals the capacity of molecular bromine as well as weak chloro-XB donors to act as robust directional structure-directing elements. Methyl rotational barriers (Ea) measured using variable-temperature deuterium solid-state NMR range from 3.75 ± 0.04 kJ mol-1 in 1,3,5-trichloro-2,4,6-trifluorobenzene·TMP to 7.08 ± 0.15 kJ mol-1 in 1,4-dichlorotetrafluorobenzene·TMP. Ea data for a larger series of TMP cocrystals featuring chloro-, bromo-, and iodo-XB donors are shown to be governed by a combination of steric and electronic factors. The average number of carbon-carbon close contacts to the methyl group is found to be a key steric metric capable of rationalizing the observed trends within each of the Cl, Br, and I series. Differences between each series are accounted for by considering the strength of the σ-hole on the XB donor. One possible route to modulating dynamics is therefore via designer cocrystals of variable stoichiometry, maintaining the core chemical features of interest between a given donor and acceptor while simultaneously modifying the number of carbon close contacts affecting dynamics. These principles may provide design opportunities to modulate more complex geared or cascade dynamics involving larger functional groups.

Formation of polyrotaxane crystals driven by dative boron-nitrogen bonds

The integration of mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) into purely organic crystalline materials is expected to produce materials with properties that are not accessible using more classic approaches. To date, this integration has proved elusive. We present a dative boron-nitrogen bond-driven self-assembly strategy that allows for the preparation of polyrotaxane crystals. The polyrotaxane nature of the crystalline material was confirmed by both single-crystal x-ray diffraction analysis and cryogenic high-resolution low-dose transmission electron microscopy. Enhanced softness and greater elasticity are seen for the polyrotaxane crystals than for nonrotaxane polymer controls. This finding is rationalized in terms of the synergetic microscopic motion of the rotaxane subunits. The present work thus highlights the benefits of integrating MIMs into crystalline materials.

Controlling dynamics in extended molecular frameworks

Molecular machines are essential dynamic components for fuel production, cargo delivery, information storage and processing in living systems. Scientists have demonstrated that they can design and synthesize artificial molecular machines that operate efficiently in isolation - for example, at high dilution in solution - fuelled by chemicals, electricity or light. To organize the spatial arrangement and motion of these machines within close proximity to one another in solid frameworks, such that useful macroscopic work can be performed, remains a challenge in both chemical and materials science. In this Review, we summarize the progress that has been made during the past decade in organizing dynamic molecular entities in such solid frameworks. Emerging applications of these dynamic smart materials in the contexts of molecular recognition, optoelectronics, drug delivery, photodynamic therapy and water desalination are highlighted. Finally, we review recent work on a new non-equilibrium adsorption phenomenon for which we have coined the term mechanisorption. The ability to use external energy to drive directional processes in mechanized extended frameworks augurs well for the future development of artificial molecular factories.

Mechanically interlocked molecules in metal-organic frameworks

Mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) have great potential in the development of molecular machinery due to their intercomponent dynamics. The incorporation of these molecules in a condensed phase makes it possible to take advantage of the control of the motion of the components at the macroscopic level. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are postulated as ideal supports for intertwined molecules. This review covers the chemistry of the mechanical bond incorporated into metal-organic frameworks from the seminal studies to the latest published advances. We first describe some fundamental concepts of MIMs and MOFs. Next, we summarize the advances in the incorporation of rotaxanes and catenanes inside MOF matrices. Finally, we conclude by showing the study of the rotaxane dynamics in MOFs and the operation of some stimuli-responsive MIMs within MOFs. In addition to emphasising some selected examples, we offer a critical opinion on the state of the art of this research field, remarking the key points on which the future of these systems should be focused.

2D and 3D metal-organic frameworks constructed with a mechanically rigidified [3]rotaxane ligand

A mechanically interlocked [3]rotaxane was newly designed, synthesized, and employed as a ligand for constructing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The nano-confinement by macrocycles forces the soft bis-isophthalate axle into a pseudo-rigid conformation and coordinates to zinc(II) ions, affording a two- or three-dimensional MOF under controlled conditions. The 2D MOF exhibits a neutral framework with a periodic puckering sheet structure, while an anionic framework with a pts topology was observed for the 3D MOF. The phase purity of both bulk materials was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction. Thermogravimetric analysis reveals that both materials are stable up to 250 °C. The success of applying mechanical bonds to rigidify flexible ligands provides new insights for the design of metal-organic frameworks.

Structural Dynamics by NMR in the Solid State: II. The MOMD Perspective of the Dynamic Structure of Metal-Organic Frameworks Comprising Several Mobile Components

We describe the application of the microscopic-order-macroscopic-disorder (MOMD) approach, developed for the analysis of dynamic ²H NMR lineshapes in the solid state, to unravel interactions among the constituents of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that comprise mobile components. MOMD was applied recently to University of Windsor Dynamic Material (UWDM) MOFs with one mobile crown ether per cavity. In this work, we study UWDM-9-d₄, which comprises a mobile ²H-labeled phenyl-ring residue along with an isotopically unlabeled 24C8 crown ether. We also study UiO-68-d₄, which is structurally similar to UWDM-9-d₄ but lacks the crown ether. The physical picture consists of the NMR probe─the C-D bonds of the phenyl-d₄ rotor─diffusing locally (diffusion tensor R) in the presence of a local ordering potential, u. For UiO-68-d₄, we find it sufficient to expand u in terms of four real Wigner functions, D_0|K|^L, overall 2-3 kT in magnitude, with R_∥ relatively fast, and R_⊥ in the (2.8-5.0) × 10² s^-1 range. For UWDM-9-d₄, u requires only two terms 2-3 kT in magnitude and slower rate constants R_∥ and R_⊥. In the more crowded macrocycle-containing UWDM-9-d₄ cavity, phenyl-d₄ dynamics is more isotropic and is described by a simpler ordering potential. This is ascribed to cooperative phenyl-ring/macrocycle motion, which yields a dynamic structure more uniform in character. The experimental ²H spectra used here were analyzed previously with a multi-simple-mode (MSM) approach where several independent simple motional modes are combined. Where possible, similar features have been identified and used to compare the two approaches.

Mixed-Ligand Uranyl Squarate Coordination Polymers: Structure Regulation and Redox Activity

The electron-rich squarate ion (C₄O₄^2-, SA^2-) possesses electronic delocalization over the entire molecule and good redox activity, and the functionalization of metal-organic complexes with the SA^2- group is desirable. In this work, a mixed-ligand method is used to construct novel uranyl squarate coordination polymers utilizing 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy), 4,4'-bipyridine-N,N'-dioxide (bpydo), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 4,4'-vinylenedipyridine (vidpy), and in situ formed oxalate (OA^2-) as ancillary ligands. Seven mixed-ligand uranyl compounds, [(UO₂)(OH)(SA)](Hbpy) (1), [(UO₂)(H₂O)(SA)₂](H₂bpy) (2), (UO₂)(H₂O)(SA)(bpydo)·2H₂O (3), (UO₂)(H₂O)(SA)(phen)·H₂O (4), (UO₂)(OH)(SA)_0.5(phen)·H₂O (5), [(UO₂)(SA)(OA)_0.5](Hphen) (6), and [(UO₂)(SA)(OA)_0.5](Hvidpy) (7), with varying crystal structures were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Compound 1, together with bpy molecules filling in the interlayer space as template agents, has a two-dimensional (2D) network structure, while 2 gives a one-dimensional (1D) chain based on mononuclear uranium units. Compound 3 shows a neutral 2D network through the combined linkage of SA^2- and bpydo. Both 4 and 5 have a similar chain-like structure due to the capping effect of phen motifs, while phen molecules in 6 act as templating agents after protonation. Similar to 6, compound 7 has a "sandwich-like" structure in which the Hvidpy motifs locate in the voids of layers of 2D uranyl-squarate networks. The redox properties of typical mixed-ligand uranyl-squarate compounds, 1, 4, and 5 with high phase purity, are characterized using cyclic voltammetry. All three of these uranyl coordination compounds show anode peaks (E_a) at 0.777, 0.804, and 0.760 V, respectively, which correspond to the oxidation process of SA^2- → SA. Meanwhile, cathodic peaks (E_c) at -0.328, -0.315, and -0.323 V corresponding to the reduction process of U(VI) → U(V) are also observed. The results reveal that all three of these uranyl coordination compounds show good redox activity and, most importantly, the interplay between two different redox-active motifs of SA^2- organic linker and uranyl node. This work enriches the library of redox-active uranyl compounds and provides a feasible mixed-ligand method for regulating the synthesis of functional actinide compounds.

2D MOFs-based Materials for the Application of Water Pollutants Removing: Fundamentals and Prospects

Water quality can have serious impacts on human health. One crucial issue of water pollution seriously affects our safety due to the continually emerging of discovered anthropogenic pollutants. The water treatment technologies are persistent improvement to adapt such new contaminants, which accelerates the evolution of materials science to explore solving the problems. Metal-organic Frameworks (MOFs) as the significant porous and multi-dimensional networks has been concerned for toxic pollutant elimination, especially probed the applications of outstanding layered 2D skeletons MOFs-based materials. The emphases of this review highlight the 2D MOFs-based materials used in water remediation and treatment strategies including adsorption and catalysis methods. Further, the prospects and challenges of 2D MOFs-based materials for water treatments applications would be surveyed meticulously for the future research and development.

An elastic metal-organic crystal with a densely catenated backbone

What particular mechanical properties can be expected for materials composed of interlocked backbones has been a long-standing issue in materials science since the first reports on polycatenane and polyrotaxane in the 1970s^1-3. Here we report a three-dimensional porous metal-organic crystal, which is exceptional in that its warps and wefts are connected only by catenation. This porous crystal is composed of a tetragonal lattice and dynamically changes its geometry upon guest molecule release, uptake and exchange, and also upon temperature variation even in a low temperature range. We indented⁴ the crystal along its a/b axes and obtained the Young's moduli of 1.77 ± 0.16 GPa in N,N-dimethylformamide and 1.63 ± 0.13 GPa in tetrahydrofuran, which are the lowest among those reported so far for porous metal-organic crystals⁵. To our surprise, hydrostatic compression showed that this elastic porous crystal was the most deformable along its c axis, where 5% contraction occurred without structural deterioration upon compression up to 0.88 GPa. The crystal structure obtained at 0.46 GPa showed that the catenated macrocycles move translationally upon contraction. We anticipate our mechanically interlocked molecule-based design to be a starting point for the development of porous materials with exotic mechanical properties. For example, squeezable porous crystals that may address an essential difficulty in realizing both high abilities of guest uptake and release are on the horizon.

Dynamics of a [2]rotaxane wheel in a crystalline molecular solid

An H-shaped [2]rotaxane comprising a bis(benzimidazole) axle and a 24-membered crown ether wheel appended with four trityl groups forms a highly crystalline material with enough free volume to allow large amplitude motion of the interlocked macrocycle. Variable-temperature (VT) ²H solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) was used to characterize the dynamics of the [2]rotaxane wheel in this material.

Motorized Macrocycle: A Photo-responsive Host with Switchable and Stereoselective Guest Recognition

Designing photo-responsive host-guest systems can provide versatile supramolecular tools for constructing smart systems and materials. We designed photo-responsive macrocyclic hosts, modulated by light-driven molecular rotary motors enabling switchable chiral guest recognition. The intramolecular cyclization of the two arms of a first-generation molecular motor with flexible oligoethylene glycol chains of different lengths resulted in crown-ether-like macrocycles with intrinsic motor function. The octaethylene glycol linkage enables the successful unidirectional rotation of molecular motors, simultaneously allowing the 1:1 host-guest interaction with ammonium salt guests. The binding affinity and stereoselectivity of the motorized macrocycle can be reversibly modulated, owing to the multi-state light-driven switching of geometry and helicity of the molecular motors. This approach provides an attractive strategy to construct stimuli-responsive host-guest systems and dynamic materials.

Dual Electroactivity in a Covalent Organic Network with Mechanically Interlocked Pillar[5]arenes

The synthesis and characterization of a polyrotaxanated covalent organic network (CON) based on the association between the viologen and pillar[5]arene (P[5]OH) units are reported. The mechanical bond allows for the irreversible insertion of n-type redox centers (P[5]OH macrocycles) within a pristine structure based on p-type viologen redox centers. Both redox units are active on a narrow potential range and, in water, the presence of P[5]OH greatly increases the electroactivity of the material.

Rapid and High-Yield Synthesis of [23]Crown Ether: Applied as a Wheel Component in the Formation of Pseudo[2]rotaxane and Synthesis of [2]Catenane with a Dibenzylammonium Dumbbell

A facile, rapid, and high yield synthesis of [23]crown ether (X23C7) has been developed from commercially available starting materials, in one step with good to excellent yield. The reaction is completed in 6 h under room temperature conditions, with the highest yield being 81%. The X23C7 macrocycle formed pseudo[2]rotaxane with a dibenzylammonium ion (DBA⁺) dumbbell, exhibiting strong association (K_a = 2.61 × 10³ M^-1). Consequently, a [2]catenane was synthesized from a DBA⁺-based diolefin terminated salt and X23C7 in 81% yield, using a threading-followed-ring-closing-metathesis approach.

Molecular Pumps and Motors

Pumps and motors are essential components of the world as we know it. From the complex proteins that sustain our cells, to the mechanical marvels that power industries, much we take for granted is only possible because of pumps and motors. Although molecular pumps and motors have supported life for eons, it is only recently that chemists have made progress toward designing and building artificial forms of the microscopic machinery present in nature. The advent of artificial molecular machines has granted scientists an unprecedented level of control over the relative motion of components of molecules through the development of kinetically controlled, away-from-thermodynamic equilibrium chemistry. We outline the history of pumps and motors, focusing specifically on the innovations that enable the design and synthesis of the artificial molecular machines central to this Perspective. A key insight connecting biomolecular and artificial molecular machines is that the physical motions by which these machines carry out their function are unambiguously in mechanical equilibrium at every instant. The operation of molecular motors and pumps can be described by trajectory thermodynamics, a theory based on the work of Onsager, which is grounded on the firm foundation of the principle of microscopic reversibility. Free energy derived from thermodynamically non-equilibrium reactions kinetically favors some reaction pathways over others. By designing molecules with kinetic asymmetry, one can engineer potential landscapes to harness external energy to drive the formation and maintenance of geometries of component parts of molecules away-from-equilibrium, that would be impossible to achieve by standard synthetic approaches.

Translational dynamics of a non-degenerate molecular shuttle imbedded in a zirconium metal-organic framework

A new [2]rotaxane molecular shuttle linker based on the binding of a 24-crown-8 ether macrocycle at a benzimidazole recognition site was synthesised. The shuttling dynamics of the linker were studied in solution and the structure confirmed by X-ray crystallography. A multivariate Zr(iv) MOF, UWDM-11, containing the new MIM linker and primary linker tetramethylterphenyldicarboxylate was synthesised and the translational motion of the molecular shuttle studied in the solid state. The use of a 13C enriched MIM linker allowed the dynamics of both activated and mesitylene-solvated UWDM-11 to be elucidated by VT 13C CPMAS SSNMR. The incorporation of mesitylene into the pores of UWDM-11 resulted in a significant increase in the barrier for thermally driven translation of the macrocycle.

Photoresponsive porous materials

Molecular machines, switches, and motors enable control over nanoscale molecular motion with unprecedented precision in artificial systems. Integration of these compounds into robust material scaffolds, in particular nanostructured solids, is a fabrication strategy for smart materials with unique properties that can be controlled with external stimuli. Here, we describe a subclass of these structures, namely light-responsive porous materials metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), and porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) appended with molecular photoswitches. In this review, we provide an overview of a broad range of light-responsive porous materials focusing on potential applications.

Tailoring the cavities of hydrogen-bonded amphidynamic crystals using weak contacts: towards faster molecular machines

This work describes the use of C–H⋯F–C contacts in the solid-state from the stator towards the rotator to fine-tune their internal motion, by constructing a set of interactions that generate close-fitting cavities in three supramolecular rotors 1–3I. The crystal structures of these rotors, determined by synchrotron radiation experiments at different temperatures, show the presence of such C–H⋯F–C contacts between extended carbazole stators featuring fluorinated phenyl rings and the 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) rotator. According to the ²H NMR results, using deuterated samples, and periodic density functional theory computations, the rotators experience fast angular displacements (preferentially 120° jumps) due to their low rotational activation energies (E_a = 0.8–2.0 kcal mol⁻¹). The higher rotational barrier for 1 (2.0 kcal mol⁻¹) is associated with a larger number of weak C–H⋯F–C contacts generated by the stators. This strategy offers the possibility to explore the correlation among weak intermolecular forces, cavity shape, and internal dynamics, which has strong implications in the design of future fine-tuned amphidynamic crystals.

Statistical Mechanical Model of Gas Adsorption in a Metal-Organic Framework Harboring a Rotaxane Molecular Shuttle

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are modular and tunable nanoporous materials with applications in gas storage, separations, and sensing. Integrating flexible/dynamic, gas-responsive components into MOFs can give them unique or enhanced adsorption properties. Here, we explore the adsorption properties that could be imparted to a MOF by a rotaxane molecular shuttle (RMS) in its pores. In the unit cell of an RMS-MOF, a macrocyclic wheel is mechanically interlocked with a strut of the MOF scaffold. The wheel shuttles between stations on the strut that are also gas adsorption sites. At a level of abstraction similar to the seminal Langmuir adsorption model, we pose and analyze a simple statistical mechanical model of gas adsorption in an RMS-MOF that accounts for (i) wheel/gas competition for sites on the strut and (ii) gas-induced changes in the configurational entropy of the shuttling wheel. We determine how the amount of gas adsorbed, the position of the wheel, and the differential energy of adsorption depend on temperature, pressure, and the interactions of the gas and wheel with the stations on the strut. Our model reveals that, compared to a rigid, Langmuir material, the chemistry of the RMS-MOF can be tuned to render gas adsorption more or less temperature sensitive and to release more or less heat upon adsorption. The model also uncovers that, if gas-wheel competition for a station is fierce, temperature influences the position of the wheel differently depending on the amount of gas adsorbed.

Exploring the dynamics of Zr-based metal-organic frameworks containing mechanically interlocked molecular shuttles

Zr(iv) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) UiO-68 and PCN-57, containing triphenylene dicarboxylate (TPDC) and tetramethyl-triphenylene dicarboxylate (TTDC) linkers, respectively, were doped with an H-shaped tetracarboxylate linker that contains a [2]rotaxane molecular shuttle. The new MOFs, UWDM-8 and UWDM-9, contain a [2]rotaxane crossbar spanning the tetrahedral cavities of the fcu topology while the octahedral cavities remain empty. ¹³C solid-state NMR (SSNMR) spectra and solution ¹H NMR spectra verified that the [2]rotaxanes were included as designed. Variable-temperature (VT) cross polarization (CP) magic-angle spinning (MAS) ¹³C SSNMR was used to explore the translational motion of the macrocyclic ring in both MOFs. The SSNMR results clearly show that the structure of the linker (TPDCvs.TTDC) affects the shuttling rate of the macrocyclic ring, although questions remain as to how rotation of the central phenylene unit of the strut might also affect the motion of the macrocycle.

Synthetic strategies towards mechanically interlocked oligomers and polymers

Mechanically interlocked molecules have fascinated chemists for decades. Initially a tantalising synthetic challenge, interlocked molecules have continued to capture the imagination for their aesthetics and, increasingly, for their potential as molecular machines and use in materials applications. Whilst preliminary statistical attempts to prepare these molecules were exceedingly inefficient, a raft of template-directed strategies have now been realised, providing a vast toolbox from which chemists can access interlocked structures in excellent yields. For many envisaged applications it is desirable to move away from small, discrete interlocked molecules and turn to oligomers and polymers instead, either due to the need for multiple mechanical bonds within the desired material, or to exploit an extended scaffold for the organisation and arrangement of individual mechanically interlocked units. In this tutorial-style review we outline the synthetic strategies that have been employed for the synthesis of mechanically interlocked oligomers and polymers, including oligo-/polymerisation of (pseudo)interlocked precursors, metal-organic self-assembly, the use of orthogonal template motifs, iterative approaches and grafting onto polymer backbones.

Structural Dynamics by NMR in the Solid State: The Unified MOMD Perspective Applied to Organic Frameworks with Interlocked Molecules

The microscopic-order-macroscopic-disorder (MOMD) approach for NMR lineshape analysis has been applied to the University of Windsor Dynamic Materials (UWDM) of types 1, 2, α-3, β-3, and 5, which are metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) comprising mobile mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs). The mobile MIM components are selectively deuterated crown ether macrocycles - 24C6, 22C6, and B24C6. Their motion is described in MOMD by an effective/collective dynamic mode characterized by a diffusion tensor, R, a restricting/ordering potential, u, expanded in the Wigner rotation matrix elements, D_0, K^L, and features of local geometry. Experimental ²H lineshapes are available over 220 K (on average) and in some cases 320 K. They are reproduced with axial R, u given by the terms D_0,0² and D_0,|2|², and established local geometry. For UWDM of types 1, β-3, and 5, where the macrocycle resides in a relatively loose space, u is in the 1-3 kT, R_∥ in the (1.0-2.5) × 10⁶ s^-1, and R_⊥ in the (0.4-2.5) × 10⁴ s^-1 range; the deuterium atom is bonded to a carbon atom with tetrahedral coordination character. For UWDM of types 2 and α-3, where the macrocycle resides in a much tighter space, a substantial change in the symmetry of u and the coordination character of the ²H-bonded carbon are detected at higher temperatures. The activation energies for R_∥ and R_⊥ are characteristic of each system. The MOMD model is general; effective/collective dynamic modes are treated. The characteristics of motion, ordering, and geometry are physically well-defined; they differ from case to case in extent and symmetry but not in essence. Physical clarity and consistency provide new insights. A previous interpretation of the same experimental data used models consisting of collections of independent simple motions. These models are specific to each case and temperature. Within their scope, generating consistent physical pictures and comparing cases are difficult; possible collective modes are neglected.

Copper-Linked Rotaxanes for the Building of Photoresponsive Metal Organic Frameworks with Controlled Cargo Delivery

We have prepared a photoresponsive metal-organic framework by using an amide-based [2]rotaxane as linker and copper(II) ions as metal nodes. The interlocked linker was obtained by the hydrogen bond-directed approach employing a fumaramide thread as template of the macrocyclic component, this latter incorporating two carboxyl groups. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the metal-organic framework, prepared under solvothermal conditions, showed the formation of stacked 2D rhombohedral grids forming channels decorated with the interlocked alkenyl threads. A series of metal-organic frameworks differing in the E/Z olefin ratio were prepared either by the previous isomerization of the linker or by postirradiation of the reticulated materials. By dynamic solid state ²H NMR measurements, using deuterium-labeled materials, we proved that the geometry of the olefinic axis of the interlocked struts determined the obtention of materials with different independent local dynamics as a result of the strength of the intercomponent noncovalent interactions. Moreover, the usefulness of these novel copper-rotaxane materials as molecular dosing containers has also been assayed by the diffusion and photorelease of p-benzoquinone, evaluated in different solvents and temperatures.

Visible-Light-Driven Rotation of Molecular Motors in a Dual-Function Metal-Organic Framework Enabled by Energy Transfer

The visible-light-driven rotation of an overcrowded alkene-based molecular motor strut in a dual-function metal-organic framework (MOF) is reported. Two types of functional linkers, a palladium-porphyrin photosensitizer and a bispyridine-derived molecular motor, were used to construct the framework capable of harvesting low-energy green light to power the rotary motion. The molecular motor was introduced in the framework using the postsynthetic solvent-assisted linker exchange (SALE) method, and the structure of the material was confirmed by powder (PXRD) and single-crystal X-ray (SC-XRD) diffraction. The large decrease in the phosphorescence lifetime and intensity of the porphyrin in the MOFs upon introduction of the molecular motor pillars confirms efficient triplet-to-triplet energy transfer between the porphyrin linkers and the molecular motor. Near-infrared Raman spectroscopy revealed that the visible light-driven rotation of the molecular motor proceeds in the solid state at rates similar to those observed in solution.

Cucurbit[7]uril-Based Metal-Organic Rotaxane Framework for Dual-Capture of Molecular Iodine and Cationic Potassium Ion

Metal-organic rotaxane frameworks (MORFs) attracted much attention in the past years for construction of intelligent functional materials. Herein, a one-pot synthesis is reported of a three-dimensional (3D) cucurbit[7]uril (Q[7])-based MORF under hydrothermal conditions, namely Q[7]-MORF-1, formed by encapsulating the anionic benzoate moieties of the tricarboxylate ligand into the cavity of Q[7]. Furthermore, Q[7]-MORF-1 shows dual-capture capacity for iodine and K⁺ selectively among the alkali metal ions. The captured molecular iodine is included in the cavity of Q[7] through halogen-bonding interactions and the K⁺ cations are positioned at the carbonyl port of the Q[7] through K-O coordination interactions.

Syntheses of cucurbit[6]uril-based metal-organic rotaxane networks by the anion regulation strategy and their proton conduction properties

Two new cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6])-based metal-organic rotaxane networks (MORNs) were successfully obtained by tuning the coordination sphere of metal copper clusters. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibited relatively high proton conductivity at 85 °C and 97% relative humidity (RH), providing great promise for fuel cell electrolyte materials.

Hydrogen-Bonding Linkers Yield a Large-Pore, Non-Catenated, Metal-Organic Framework with pcu Topology

Pillared paddle-wheel-based metal-organic framework (MOF) materials are an attractive target as they offer a reliable method for constructing well-defined, multifunctional materials. A drawback of these materials, which has limited their application, is their tendency to form catenated frameworks with little accessible volume. To eliminate this disadvantage, it is necessary to investigate strategies for constructing non-catenated pillared paddle-wheel MOFs. Hydrogen-bonding substituents on linkers have been postulated to prevent catenation in certain frameworks and, in this work, we present a new MOF to further bolster this theory. Using 2,2'-diamino-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid, BPDC-(NH₂)₂, linkers and dipyridyl glycol, DPG, pillars, we assembled a MOF with pcu topology. The new material is non-catenated, exhibiting large accessible pores and low density. To the best of our knowledge, this material constitutes the pcu framework with the largest pore volume and lowest density. We attribute the lack of catenation to the presence of H-bonding substituents on both linkers.

A polythreaded MnII-MOF and its super-performances for dye adsorption and supercapacitors

One new polythreaded Mn^II-MOF was successfully prepared by employing a tridentate N-donor ligand with three long arms. Its excellent performances in dye adsorption and supercapacitor have been investigated in detail.

Design of Collective Motions from Synthetic Molecular Switches, Rotors, and Motors

Precise control over molecular movement is of fundamental and practical importance in physics, biology, and chemistry. At nanoscale, the peculiar functioning principles and the synthesis of individual molecular actuators and machines has been the subject of intense investigations and debates over the past 60 years. In this review, we focus on the design of collective motions that are achieved by integrating, in space and time, several or many of these individual mechanical units together. In particular, we provide an in-depth look at the intermolecular couplings used to physically connect a number of artificial mechanically active molecular units such as photochromic molecular switches, nanomachines based on mechanical bonds, molecular rotors, and light-powered rotary motors. We highlight the various functioning principles that can lead to their collective motion at various length scales. We also emphasize how their synchronized, or desynchronized, mechanical behavior can lead to emerging functional properties and to their implementation into new active devices and materials.

Functionalized Dynamic Metal-Organic Frameworks as Smart Switches for Sensing and Adsorption Applications

Over the past two decades, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with flexible structures or dynamic behavior have shown great potential as functional materials in many fields. This paper presents a review of these dynamic and functional MOFs, which can undergo controllable and reversible transformation, with regard to their application as smart switches. Trigger conditions, which include physical/chemical stimuli (e.g., guest molecules, light, temperature, pressure), are also discussed. Research methods for investigating the dynamic processes and mechanisms involving experimental characterization and computational modeling are briefly mentioned as well. The emphasis is on the aspects of the design and functionalization of dynamic MOFs. The pre-design of metal nodes, organic linkers, and topology, as well as post-modification of components, increases the possibility of obtaining functionalized dynamic materials. Recent advances with regard to potential applications for dynamic frameworks as smart switches for adsorption and sensing are also reviewed.

Crystallographic Visualization of Postsynthetic Nickel Clusters into Metal-Organic Framework

Postsynthetic metalation (PSM) has been employed as a robust method for the postsynthetic modification of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). However, the lack of relevant information that can be obtained for the postsynthetically introduced metallic ions has hindered the development of PSM applications. Thanks to the advancement in single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) technology, there have been a few recent examples in which successful postsynthetic introduction of single metal ions into MOFs occurred at the defined chelating sites. These works have provided useful explanations about the complicated host-guest chemistry involved in PSMs. On the other hand, there are only limited examples with crystallographic snapshots of the postsynthetic installation of metal clusters into the pores of MOFs using an ordinary SCXRD due to the loss of crystallinity of parent matrix during the PSM process. Herein, by the careful selection of starting materials and controlling the reaction conditions, we report the first crystallographic visualization of metal clusters inserted into Zr-based MOFs via PSM. The structural advantages of the parent Zr-MOF, which are inherited from the stable Zr₆ cluster and triazole-containing dicarboxylate ligand, ensure both the preservation of high crystallinity and the presence of flexible coordination sites for PSM. Furthermore, PSM of metal clusters in a MOF pore space enhances stability of the final samples while also imparting the functionality of a successful catalyst toward ethylene dimerization reaction. The related construction ideas and structural information detailed in this work can help lay the foundation for further advancements using the postmodification of MOFs as well as open new doors for the utilization of SCXRD technology in the field of MOFs.

Syntheses and magnetic properties of high-dimensional cucurbit[6]uril-based metal-organic rotaxane frameworks

Three new high-dimensional cucurbit[6]-based metal-organic rotaxane frameworks [Co₂(PR43)(BDC)₂Cl₂]·4H₂O (1), [Co₂(PR43)(BTC)₂]·6H₂O (2) and [Co₂(PR43)(BPT)₂]·20H₂O (3) were obtained via the hydrothermal synthesis method. Compound 1 comprised a two-dimensional layered structure, while compounds 2 and 3 exhibited three-dimensional pillared structures. All the compounds showed good thermal stabilities. Furthermore, the magnetic properties of compounds 1-3 were also investigated in detail.

Threading-gated photochromism in [2]pseudorotaxanes

Rigid, Y-shaped imidazole compounds containing the bis(thienyl)ethene moiety were designed and synthesized. The 4,5-bis(benzothienyl)-2-phenylimidazolium cations were then used as axles for [2]pseudorotaxane formation with 24-membered crown ether wheels. It was demonstrated using 1H NMR spectroscopy, UV-Vis absorption and emission spectroscopies that this host-guest interaction results in significant changes in the photochromic properties of the imidazolium axles. This is a rare example of gated photochromism, which exploits the recognition event of an interpenetrated molecular system to tune the photochromic properties in one of the components.

Unidirectional rotary motion in a metal-organic framework

Overcrowded alkene-based light-driven molecular motors are able to perform large-amplitude repetitive unidirectional rotations. Their behaviour is well understood in solution. However, Brownian motion precludes the precise positioning at the nanoscale needed to harness cooperative action. Here, we demonstrate molecular motors organized in crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The motor unit becomes a part of the organic linker (or strut), and its spatial arrangement is elucidated through powder and single-crystal X-ray analyses and polarized optical and Raman microscopies. We confirm that the light-driven unidirectional rotation of the motor units is retained in the MOF framework and that the motors can operate in the solid state with similar rotary speed (rate of thermal helix inversion) to that in solution. These 'moto-MOFs' could in the future be used to control dynamic function in crystalline materials.

Rotational Dynamics of Linkers in Metal⁻Organic Frameworks

Among the numerous fascinating properties of metal⁻organic frameworks (MOFs), their rotational dynamics is perhaps one of the most intriguing, with clear consequences for adsorption and separation of molecules, as well as for optical and mechanical properties. A closer look at the rotational mobility in MOF linkers reveals that it is not only a considerably widespread phenomenon, but also a fairly diverse one. Still, the impact of these dynamics is often understated. In this review, we address the various mechanisms of linker rotation reported in the growing collection of literature, followed by a highlight of the methods currently used in their study, and we conclude with the impacts that such dynamics have on existing and future applications.

Self-templated synthesis of amide catenanes and formation of a catenane coordination polymer

A self-templation strategy was used to synthesise isophthalamide [2]catenanes of various sizes in up to 51% yield without the need for metal ions as templates or mediators of covalent bond formation. Using this strategy a bis-monodentate catenane was prepared incorporating exohedral pyridine units. Upon complexation of this ligand with AgOTf a one-dimensional coordination polymer was obtained in the solid state in which both macrocycles of the catenane are involved in binding to the metal nodes, resulting in a rare example of a coordination assembly in which mechanical bonds are incorporated into the structure backbone.
