A Common Single-Site Pt(II)–O(OH)x– Species Stabilized by Sodium on “Active” and “Inert” Supports Catalyzes the Water-Gas Shift Reaction

Promoted hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol over single-atom Cu sites with Na+-decorated microenvironment

Although single-atom Cu sites exhibit high efficiency in CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, they are prone to forming Cu nanoparticles due to reduction and aggregation under reaction conditions, especially at high temperatures. Herein, single-atom Cu sites stabilized by adjacent Na+ ions have been successfully constructed within a metal-organic framework (MOF)-based catalyst, namely MOF-808-NaCu. It is found that the electrostatic interaction between the Na+ and Hδ- species plays a pivotal role in upholding the atomic dispersion of Cu in MOF-808-NaCu during CO2 hydrogenation, even at temperatures of up to 275°C. This exceptional stabilization effect endows the catalyst with excellent activity (306 g·kgcat-1·h-1), high selectivity to methanol (93%) and long-term stability at elevated reaction temperatures, far surpassing the counterpart in the absence of Na+ (denoted as MOF-808-Cu). This work develops an effective strategy for the fabrication of stable single-atom sites for advanced catalysis by creating an alkali-decorated microenvironment in close proximity.

Advances in Synthesis and Applications of Single-Atom Catalysts for Metal Oxide-Based Gas Sensors

As a stable, low-cost, environment-friendly, and gas-sensitive material, semiconductor metal oxides have been widely used for gas sensing. In the past few years, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have gained increasing attention in the field of gas sensing with the advantages of maximized atomic utilization and unique electronic and chemical properties and have successfully been applied to enhance the detection sensitivity and selectivity of metal oxide gas sensors. However, the application of SACs in gas sensors is still in its infancy. Herein, we critically review the recent advances and current status of single-atom catalysts in metal oxide gas sensors, providing some suggestions for the development of this field. The synthesis methods and characterization techniques of SAC-modified metal oxides are summarized. The interactions between SACs and metal oxides are crucial for the stable loading of single-atom catalysts and for improving gas-sensitive performance. Then, the current application progress of various SACs (Au, Pt, Cu, Ni, etc.) in metal oxide gas sensors is introduced. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of SACs in metal oxide gas sensors are presented.

Structural Analysis of Single-Atom Catalysts by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

ConspectusMetal nanoparticles (NPs) are one of the most frequently used heterogeneous catalysts. However, only the surface atoms in the NPs can participate in catalytic reactions. To maximize the atomic efficiency, the active sites can be reduced to single atoms. Generally, catalysts that have isolated metal atoms on the surface of a support are called single-atom catalysts (SACs). Many techniques have been developed and applied to probe the structures of SACs. Nevertheless, the structural characterization of SACs is still challenging as it requires the analysis of their structure and properties with atomic and sometimes even subatomic resolution. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful tool in investigating the local coordination environment of SACs since it is element-specific and can provide accurate structural information at the subatomic level (∼0.01 Å).In this Account, we present our perspectives on the structural analysis of SACs from some unique features in the X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). We first highlight the importance of the XANES peak features in the sensitive analysis of SAC structures. Such analysis is illustrated to be even more useful in the joint applications of experimental and theoretical XAS. The inspection of the metal-metal (M-M) peak in Fourier transformed EXAFS (FT-EXAFS) spectra is a widely used method to identify the single-atom structure, but this method is not always reliable. Thus, we point out the importance of fitting EXAFS and the thorough interpretation of structural parameters such as coordination numbers (CNs, the number of neighboring atoms next to a chosen atom), bond distances, and the Debye-Waller factor (σ2). The small FT-EXAFS peak for the M-M shell is often ignored in the structural analysis of SACs. Here, it is demonstrated that a careful analysis of these small peaks could help more reliably analyze the SAC structure, and it would be particularly useful in the analysis of a single-atom alloy (SAA). Next, the usefulness of bond distance and σ2 analysis is highlighted, and such analysis is shown to be particularly helpful for the analysis of SAAs, which is rarely discussed in the literature. Given the advantage that XAS data can be collected under various conditions, we show that in situ XAS can provide important information about the catalytic mechanism of the SAC catalyst. In particular, we emphasize the significance of using an advanced in situ technique to extract detailed structural information that is difficult to obtain from regular XAS experiments. Finally, we highlight the importance of jointly using XAS with other complementary methods in a more complete understanding of the structure and properties of SACs. It is anticipated that with further development of XAS techniques and improved data analysis, XAS will become even more powerful in providing insights into the structure-property relationships of SACs, which can advance their practical applications.

Alkaline-earth ion stabilized sub-nano-platinum tin clusters for propane dehydrogenation

The strong promotion effects of alkali/alkaline earth metals are frequently reported for heterogeneous catalytic processes such as propane dehydrogenation (PDH), but their functioning principles remain elusive. This paper describes the effect of the addition of calcium (Ca) on reducing the deactivation rate of platinum-tin (Pt-Sn) catalyzed PDH from 0.04 h-1 to 0.0098 h-1 at 873 K under a WHSV of 16.5 h-1 of propane. The Pt-Sn-Ca catalyst shows a high propylene selectivity of >96% with a propylene production rate of 41 molC3H6 (gPt h)-1 and ∼1% activity loss after regeneration. The combination of characterization and DFT simulations reveals that Ca acts as a structural promoter favoring the transition of Snn+ in the parent catalyst to Sn0 during reduction, and the latter is an electron donor that increases the electron density of Pt. This greatly suppresses coke formation from deep dehydrogenation. Moreover, it was found that Ca promotes the formation of a highly reactive and sintering-resistant sub-nano Pt-Sn alloy with a diameter of approximately 0.8 nm. These lead to high activity and selectivity for the Pt-Sn-Ca catalyst for PDH.

Morphology Dependent Reactivity of CsOx Nanostructures on Au(111): Binding and Hydrogenation of CO2 to HCOOH

Cesium oxide (CsOx) nanostructures grown on Au(111) behave as active centers for the CO2 binding and hydrogenation reactions. The morphology and reactivity of these CsOx systems were investigated as a function of alkali coverage using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. STM results show that initially (0.05-0.10 ML) cesium oxide clusters (Cs2O2) grow at the elbow sites of the herringbone of Au(111), subsequently transforming into two-dimensional islands with increasing cesium coverage (>0.15 ML). XPS measurements reveal the presence of suboxidic (CsyO; y ≥ 2) species for the island structures. The higher coverages of cesium oxide nanostructures contain a lower O/Cs ratio, resulting in a stronger binding of CO2. Moreover, the O atoms in the CsyO structure undergo a rearrangement upon the adsorption of CO2 which is a reversible phenomenon. Under CO2 hydrogenation conditions, the small Cs2O2 clusters are hydroxylated, thereby preventing the adsorption of CO2. However, the hydroxylation of the higher coverages of CsyO did not prevent CO2 adsorption, and adsorbed CO2 transformed to HCOO species that eventually yield HCOOH. DFT calculations further confirm that the dissociated H2 attacks the C in the adsorbate to produce formate, which is both thermodynamically and kinetically favored during the CO2 reaction with hydroxylated CsyO. These results demonstrate that cesium oxide by itself is an excellent catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation that could produce formate, an important intermediate for the generation of value-added species. The role of the alkali oxide nanostructures as active centers, not merely as promoters, may have broad implications, wherein the alkali oxides can be considered in the design of materials tuned for specific applications in heterogeneous catalysis.

Direct Evidence of Dynamic Metal Support Interactions in Co/TiO2 Catalysts by Near-Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

The interaction between metal particles and the oxide support, the so-called metal-support interaction, plays a critical role in the performance of heterogenous catalysts. Probing the dynamic evolution of these interactions under reactive gas atmospheres is crucial to comprehending the structure-performance relationship and eventually designing new catalysts with enhanced properties. Cobalt supported on TiO2 (Co/TiO2) is an industrially relevant catalyst applied in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Although it is widely acknowledged that Co/TiO2 is restructured during the reaction process, little is known about the impact of the specific gas phase environment at the material's surface. The combination of soft and hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopies are used to investigate in situ Co particles supported on pure and NaBH4-modified TiO2 under H2, O2, and CO2:H2 gas atmospheres. The combination of soft and hard X-ray photoemission methods, which allows for simultaneous probing of the chemical composition of surface and subsurface layers, is one of the study's unique features. It is shown that under H2, cobalt particles are encapsulated below a stoichiometric TiO2 layer. This arrangement is preserved under CO2 hydrogenation conditions (i.e., CO2:H2), but changes rapidly upon exposure to O2. The pretreatment of the TiO2 support with NaBH4 affects the surface mobility and prevents TiO2 spillover onto Co particles.

Importance of broken geometric symmetry of single-atom Pt sites for efficient electrocatalysis

Platinum single-atom catalysts hold promise as a new frontier in heterogeneous electrocatalysis. However, the exact chemical nature of active Pt sites is highly elusive, arousing many hypotheses to compensate for the significant discrepancies between experiments and theories. Here, we identify the stabilization of low-coordinated Pt^II species on carbon-based Pt single-atom catalysts, which have rarely been found as reaction intermediates of homogeneous Pt^II catalysts but have often been proposed as catalytic sites for Pt single-atom catalysts from theory. Advanced online spectroscopic studies reveal multiple identities of Pt^II moieties on the single-atom catalysts beyond ideally four-coordinated Pt^II-N₄. Notably, decreasing Pt content to 0.15 wt.% enables the differentiation of low-coordinated Pt^II species from the four-coordinated ones, demonstrating their critical role in the chlorine evolution reaction. This study may afford general guidelines for achieving a high electrocatalytic performance of carbon-based single-atom catalysts based on other d⁸ metal ions.

Dynamic Evolution of Palladium Single Atoms on Anatase Titania Support Determines the Reverse Water-Gas Shift Activity

Research interest in single-atom catalysts (SACs) has been continuously increasing. However, the lack of understanding of the dynamic behaviors of SACs during applications hinders catalyst development and mechanistic understanding. Herein, we report on the evolution of active sites over Pd/TiO₂-anatase SAC (Pd₁/TiO₂) in the reverse water-gas shift (rWGS) reaction. Combining kinetics, in situ characterization, and theory, we show that at T ≥ 350 °C, the reduction of TiO₂ by H₂ alters the coordination environment of Pd, creating Pd sites with partially cleaved Pd-O interfacial bonds and a unique electronic structure that exhibit high intrinsic rWGS activity through the carboxyl pathway. The activation by H₂ is accompanied by the partial sintering of single Pd atoms (Pd₁) into disordered, flat, ∼1 nm diameter clusters (Pd_n). The highly active Pd sites in the new coordination environment under H₂ are eliminated by oxidation, which, when performed at a high temperature, also redisperses Pd_n and facilitates the reduction of TiO₂. In contrast, Pd₁ sinters into crystalline, ∼5 nm particles (Pd_NP) during CO treatment, deactivating Pd₁/TiO₂. During the rWGS reaction, the two Pd evolution pathways coexist. The activation by H₂ dominates, leading to the increasing rate with time-on-stream, and steady-state Pd active sites similar to the ones formed under H₂. This work demonstrates how the coordination environment and nuclearity of metal sites on a SAC evolve during catalysis and pretreatments and how their activity is modulated by these behaviors. These insights on SAC dynamics and the structure-function relationship are valuable to mechanistic understanding and catalyst design.

The Hydrogenation of Crotonaldehyde on PdCu Single Atom Alloy Catalysts

Recyclable PdCu single atom alloys supported on Al₂O₃ were applied to the selective hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde to elucidate the minimum number of Pd atoms required to facilitate the sustainable transformation of an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl molecule. It was found that, by diluting the Pd content of the alloy, the reaction activity of Cu nanoparticles can be accelerated, enabling more time for the cascade conversion of butanal to butanol. In addition, a significant increase in the conversion rate was observed, compared to bulk Cu/Al₂O₃ and Pd/Al₂O₃ catalysts when normalising for Cu and Pd content, respectively. The reaction selectivity over the single atom alloy catalysts was found to be primarily controlled by the Cu host surface, mainly leading to the formation of butanal but at a significantly higher rate than the monometallic Cu catalyst. Low quantities of crotyl alcohol were observed over all Cu-based catalysts but not for the Pd monometallic catalyst, suggesting that it may be a transient species converted immediately to butanol and or isomerized to butanal. These results demonstrate that fine-tuning the dilution of PdCu single atom alloy catalysts can leverage the activity and selectivity enhancement, and lead to cost-effective, sustainable, and atom-efficient alternatives to monometallic catalysts.

Electrothermal Water-Gas Shift Reaction at Room Temperature with a Silicomolybdate-Based Palladium Single-Atom Catalyst

The water-gas shift (WGS) reaction is often conducted at elevated temperature and requires energy-intensive separation of hydrogen (H₂ ) from methane (CH₄ ), carbon dioxide (CO₂ ), and residual carbon monoxide (CO). Designing processes to decouple CO oxidation and H₂ production provides an alternative strategy to obtain high-purity H₂ streams. We report an electrothermal WGS process combining thermal oxidation of CO on a silicomolybdic acid (SMA)-supported Pd single-atom catalyst (Pd₁ /CsSMA) and electrocatalytic H₂ evolution. The two half-reactions are coupled through phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) as a redox mediator at a moderate anodic potential of 0.6 V (versus Ag/AgCl). Under optimized conditions, our catalyst exhibited a TOF of 1.2 s^-1 with turnover numbers above 40 000 mol CO 2 ${{_{{\rm CO}{_{2}}}}}$  mol_Pd ^-1 achieving stable H₂ production with a purity consistently exceeding 99.99 %.

A meta-analysis of the effects of clay mineral supplementation on alkaline phosphatase, broiler health, and performance

The crucial constraint in the broiler production sector is feed efficiency; many feed additives have been widely employed to increase broiler growth. Nonetheless, some of these substances exacerbate health and animal-based food product safety concerns. This meta-analysis examines the effect of clay minerals on alkaline phosphatase (ALP), broiler health, and performance. Metadata was constructed from 369 data items that were harvested from 86 studies. The addition of clay minerals was set as a fixed effect and the difference between experiments was established as a random effect. The metadata were fitted using a linear mixed model. Due to the presence of clay minerals, growth performance as assessed by body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), and performance efficiency index (PEI) increased significantly (P < 0.01). In the total period, the increases of BW, ADG, and PEI were 4.12 g, 0.0714 g/d, and 0.648, respectively, per unit of clay minerals added. Clay minerals did not affect blood serum parameters (e.g., ALP and calcium). The IgA and IgM concentrations in the jejunum and ileum were significantly greater (P < 0.01) in the starter phase. Among clay minerals, broilers fed diets with aluminosilicate, halloysite, kaolin, and zeolite consistently exhibited higher (P < 0.05) BW, ADG, PEI, and lower feed conversion ratio (P < 0.05) in the finisher phase. Aluminosilicate was the only clay that increased (P < 0.05) secretory IgA concentration in both jejunum and ileum. In conclusion, clay minerals could be used as a growth promoter, especially during the finisher phase, without adversely affecting feed intake, liver function, and mineral metabolism in broiler chickens. Aluminosilicate was superior in improving the mucosal immunity status of broiler chickens.

Theoretical study of the catalytic performance of Fe and Cu single-atom catalysts supported on Mo2C toward the reverse water-gas shift reaction

The reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) is an attractive process using CO₂ as a chemical feedstock. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) exhibit high catalytic activity in several reactions, maximizing the metal use and enabling easier tuning by rational design than heterogeneous catalysts based on metal nanoparticles. In this study, we evaluate, using DFT calculations, the RWGS mechanism catalyzed by SACs based on Cu and Fe supported on Mo₂C, which is also an active RWGS catalyst on its own. While Cu/Mo₂C showed more feasible energy barriers toward CO formation, Fe/Mo₂C presented lower energy barriers for H₂O formation. Overall, the study showcases the difference in reactivity between both metals, evaluating the impact of oxygen coverage and suggesting Fe/Mo₂C as a potentially active RWGS catalyst based on theoretical calculations.

Surface and Interface Coordination Chemistry Learned from Model Heterogeneous Metal Nanocatalysts: From Atomically Dispersed Catalysts to Atomically Precise Clusters

The surface and interface coordination structures of heterogeneous metal catalysts are crucial to their catalytic performance. However, the complicated surface and interface structures of heterogeneous catalysts make it challenging to identify the molecular-level structure of their active sites and thus precisely control their performance. To address this challenge, atomically dispersed metal catalysts (ADMCs) and ligand-protected atomically precise metal clusters (APMCs) have been emerging as two important classes of model heterogeneous catalysts in recent years, helping to build bridge between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. This review illustrates how the surface and interface coordination chemistry of these two types of model catalysts determines the catalytic performance from multiple dimensions. The section of ADMCs starts with the local coordination structure of metal sites at the metal-support interface, and then focuses on the effects of coordinating atoms, including their basicity and hardness/softness. Studies are also summarized to discuss the cooperativity achieved by dual metal sites and remote effects. In the section of APMCs, the roles of surface ligands and supports in determining the catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability of APMCs are illustrated. Finally, some personal perspectives on the further development of surface coordination and interface chemistry for model heterogeneous metal catalysts are presented.

Synergy of Platinum Single Atoms and Platinum Atomic Clusters on Sulfur-Doped Titanium Nitride Nanotubes for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Highly dispersed Pt, such as Pt single atoms and atomic clusters, has great potential in the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to the high atomic efficiency and unique electronic configuration. Rationally regrating the electronic structure of Pt catalysts is desirable for promoting the HER performance. Herein, a 3D self-supported monolithic electrode consisting of Pt single atoms (Pt_SAs ) and Pt atomic clusters (Pt_ACs ) anchored on sulfur-doped titanium nitride nanotubes (S-TiN NTs) encapsulated in polyaniline (PANI) on Ti mesh (PANI@Pt/S-TiN NTs/Ti) via a facile electrochemical strategy for efficient HER is designed and synthesized. Contributed by the unique structure and composition and the synergy of Pt_SAs , Pt_ACs and S-TiN NTs, the PANI@Pt/S-TiN NTs/Ti electrode exhibits ultrahigh HER activities with only 12, 25 and 39 mV overpotentials at -10 mA cm^-2 in acidic, alkaline and neutral media, respectively, and can maintain a stable performance for 25 h. Impressively, the mass activities are respectively up to 26.1, 22.4, and 17.7 times as that of Pt/C/CC electrode. Theoretical calculation results show that the synergistic effect of Pt_SAs , Pt_ACs , and S-TiN NTs can optimize the electronic structure of Pt and generate multiple active sites with a thermodynamically favorable hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔG_H* ), thereby resulting in an enhanced HER activity.

Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbon from Biomass with Efficient Toluene Adsorption and Superior Catalytic Performance

The chemical composition and surface groups of the carbon support affect the adsorption capacity of toluene. To investigate the effect of catalyst substrate on the catalytic performance, two different plant biomasses, banana peel and sugarcane peel, were used as carbon precursors to prepare porous carbon catalyst supports (Cba, Csu, respectively) by a chemical activation method. After decorating PtCo₃ nanoparticles onto both carbon supports (Cba, Csu), the PtCo₃-su catalyst demonstrated better catalytic performance for toluene oxidation (T₁₀₀ = 237 °C) at a high space velocity of 12,000 h^-1. The Csu support possessed a stronger adsorption capacity of toluene (542 mg g^-1), resulting from the synergistic effect of micropore volume and nitrogen-containing functional groups, which led to the PtCo₃-su catalyst exhibiting a better catalytic performance. Moreover, the PtCo₃-su catalyst also showed excellent stability, good water resistance properties, and high recyclability, which can be used as a promising candidate for practical toluene catalytic combustion.

Isolating Single and Few Atoms for Enhanced Catalysis

Atomically dispersed metal catalysts have triggered great interest in the field of catalysis owing to their unique features. Isolated single or few metal atoms can be anchored on substrates via chemical bonding or space confinement to maximize atom utilization efficiency. The key challenge lies in precisely regulating the geometric and electronic structure of the active metal centers, thus significantly influencing the catalytic properties. Although several reviews have been published on the preparation, characterization, and application of single-atom catalysts (SACs), the comprehensive understanding of SACs, dual-atom catalysts (DACs), and atomic clusters has never been systematically summarized. Here, recent advances in the engineering of local environments of state-of-the-art SACs, DACs, and atomic clusters for enhanced catalytic performance are highlighted. Firstly, various synthesis approaches for SACs, DACs, and atomic clusters are presented. Then, special attention is focused on the elucidation of local environments in terms of electronic state and coordination structure. Furthermore, a comprehensive summary of isolated single and few atoms for the applications of thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis is provided. Finally, the potential challenges and future opportunities in this emerging field are presented. This review will pave the way to regulate the microenvironment of the active site for boosting catalytic processes.

Achieving acetone efficient deep decomposition by strengthening reactants adsorption and activation over difunctional Au(OH)Kx/hierarchical MFI catalyst

Realizing the simultaneous adsorption and activation of O₂ and reactants over supported noble metal catalysts is crucial for the oxidation of organic hydrocarbons. Herein, we report a facile one-step ethylene glycol reduction method to synthesize difunctional Au(OH)K_x sites, which were anchored on a hierarchical hollow MFI support and adopted for acetone decomposition. The alkali ion-associated adjacent surface hydroxyl groups were coordinated with Au nanoparticles, resulting in partially oxidized Au¹⁺ sites with improved dispersion. The results obtained from exclusive ex situ and in situ experiments illustrated that the proper content of K and hydroxyl groups significantly enhanced the adsorption of surface O₂ and acetone molecules around the Au sites simultaneously, whereas the excess K species inhibited the catalytic performance by blocking the pore structure and decreasing the acidity of catalysts. The Au(OH)K_0.7/h-MFI catalyst exhibited the highest efficiency for acetone oxidation, over which 1500 ppm acetone can be completely oxidized at just 280 °C with an extremely low activation energy of 32.5 kJ mol^-1. The carbonate species were detected as the main intermediates during acetone decomposition over the difunctional Au(OH)K_x sites through a Langmuir - Hinshelwood (L - H) mechanism. This finding paves the way for designing and constructing efficient functional active sites for the complete oxidation of hydrocarbons.

Revealing the catalytic kinetics and dynamics of individual Pt atoms at the single-molecule level

Here, with single-molecule fluorescence microscopy, we study the catalytic behavior of individual Pt atoms at single-turnover resolution, and then reveal the unique catalytic properties of Pt single-atom catalyst and the difference in catalytic properties between individual Pt atoms and Pt nanoparticles. Further density functional theory calculation indicates that unique catalytic properties of Pt single-atom catalyst could be attributed intrinsically to the unique surface properties of Pt₁-based active sites.

Due to the importance of single-atom catalysts (SAC), here, the catalysis of Pt SAC was studied at the single-molecule single-atom level. Both static and dynamic activity heterogeneity are observed in Pt SAC. It reveals that the intrinsic catalytic activity of Pt SAC is higher than that of Pt nanoparticles (NPs), although they follow the same bimolecular competition mechanism. Significantly, Pt SAC presents no catalysis-induced surface restructuring, meaning that the dynamic activity fluctuation of Pt SAC can only be attributed to the spontaneous surface restructuring, and the catalysis process does not affect much of the structure of Pt₁-based active sites, all different from Pt NP catalysis, in which the surface restructuring and the catalysis can affect each other. Further, density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicates that the unique catalytic properties of Pt SAC or the different catalytic properties between Pt SAC and NPs could be attributed to the strong adsorptions of both reactant and product on Pt SAC, large surface energy of Pt SAC, and strong binding of Pt₁ on support. Knowledge revealed here provides fundamental insights into the catalysis of atomically dispersed catalyst.

Dynamic Pt-OH-·H2O-Ag species mediate coupled electron and proton transfer for catalytic hydride reduction of 4-nitrophenol at the confined nanoscale interface

Generally, the catalytic transformation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) at heterogeneous metal surfaces follows a Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism when sodium borohydride (NaBH₄) is used as the sacrificial reductant. Herein, with Pt-Ag bimetallic nanoparticles confined in dendritic mesoporous silica nanospheres (DMSNs) as a model catalyst, we demonstrated that the conversion of 4-NP did not pass through the direct hydrogen transfer route with the hydride equivalents being supplied by borohydride via the bimolecular L-H mechanism, since Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy with the use of isotopically labeled reactants (NaBD₄ and D₂O) showed that the final product of 4-AP was composed of protons (or deuterons) that originated from the solvent water (or heavy water). Combined characterization by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and the optical excitation and photoluminescence spectrum evidenced that the surface hydrous hydroxide complex bound to the metal surface (also called structural water molecules, SWs), due to the space overlap of p orbitals of two O atoms in SWs, could form an ensemble of dynamic interface transient states, which provided the alternative electron and proton transfer channels for selective transformation of 4-NP. The cationic Pt species in the Ag-Pt bimetallic catalyst mainly acts as a dynamic adsorption center to temporally anchor SWs and related reactants, and not as the active site for hydrogen activation.

Elucidating the Formation and Structural Evolution of Platinum Single-Site Catalysts for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Platinum single-site catalysts (SSCs) are a promising technology for the production of hydrogen from clean energy sources. They have high activity and maximal platinum-atom utilization. However, the bonding environment of platinum during operation is poorly understood. In this work, we present a mechanistic study of platinum SSCs using operando, synchrotron-X-ray absorption spectroscopy. We synthesize an atomically dispersed platinum complex with aniline and chloride ligands onto graphene and characterize it with ex-situ electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy (XANES), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS). Then, by operando EXAFS and XANES, we show that as a negatively biased potential is applied, the Pt-N bonds break first followed by the Pt-Cl bonds. The platinum is reduced from platinum(II) to metallic platinum(0) by the onset of the hydrogen-evolution reaction at 0 V. Furthermore, we observe an increase in Pt-Pt bonding, indicating the formation of platinum agglomerates. Together, these results indicate that while aniline is used to prepare platinum SSCs, the single-site complexes are decomposed and platinum agglomerates at operating potentials. This work is an important contribution to the understanding of the evolution of bonding environment in SSCs and provides some molecular insights into how platinum agglomeration causes the deactivation of SSCs over time.

Catalytic stability enhancement for pollutant removal via balancing lattice oxygen mobility and VOCs adsorption

Manganese oxide supported Pt single atoms (Pt₁/MnO_x) are prepared by the molten salt method. Catalytic oxidation of toluene and iso-hexane, typical emissions from furniture paints industry, is tested. Pt₁/MnO_x shows poor and high catalytic stability for toluene and iso-hexane oxidation, respectively. Enhancement in the catalytic stability for toluene oxidation is observed after the hydrogen reduction treatment of Pt₁/MnO_x at 200 °C. The hydrogen treated catalyst possesses the weaker Mn-O bonds and lower coordination number of PtO, with superior mobility of lattice oxygen and appropriate toluene adsorption. Balancing lattice oxygen mobility and volatile organic compounds adsorption is important for the catalytic stability of Pt₁/MnO_x. For the oxidation of toluene and iso-hexane mixture, owing to the competitive adsorption, iso-hexane oxidation is greatly inhibited, while toluene oxidation is not influenced. The present Pt₁/MnO_x catalyst holds promising prospect in furniture paints industry applications because of high catalytic stability and water resistance ability.

Noble-metal based single-atom catalysts for the water-gas shift reaction

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted great attention in heterogeneous catalysis. In this Feature Article, we summarize the recent advances of typical Au and Pt-group-metal (PGM) based SACs and their applications in the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction in the past two decades. First, oxide and carbide supported single atoms are categorized. Then, the active sites in the WGS reaction are identified and discussed, with SACs as the positive state or metallic state. After that, the reaction mechanisms of the WGS are presented, which are classified into two categories of redox mechanism and associative mechanism. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in this emerging field for the collection of hydrogen are proposed on the basis of current developments. It is believed that more and more exciting findings based on SACs are forthcoming.

Atomically Dispersed Ruthenium on Nickel Hydroxide Ultrathin Nanoribbons for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Media

Achieving highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media is a great challenge. Single-atom catalysts with high-loading amount have attracted great interest due to their remarkable catalytic properties. Herein, by using nickel foam as the substrate, the authors design and precisely synthesize atomic ruthenium (Ru)-loaded nickel hydroxide ultrathin nanoribbons (R-NiRu) with a high atomic Ru loading amount reaching ≈7.7 wt% via a one-step hydrothermal method. The presence of concentrated Cl^- in the synthetic system is beneficial for constructing ultrathin nanoribbons, which, with abundant edge OH groups, make it easy to trap atomic Ru. Taking advantage of the synergy between atomic Ru and the nanoribbon morphology of nickel hydroxide, R-NiRu exhibit a low overpotential of 16 mV for HER at 10 mA cm^-2 and a Tafel slope of 40 mV dec^-1 in aqueous 1.0 m KOH solution, which are superior to those of commercial Pt/C (overpotential of 17 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 , Tafel slope of 43 mV dec^-1 ). Density functional theory (DFT) calculation results demonstrate that atomically dispersed Ru can significantly reduce the HER energy barrier. Moreover, R-NiRu maintains exceptional stability after 5000 cyclic voltammetry cycles. This efficient and facile synthetic strategy provides a new avenue for designing efficient catalysts.

Tuning the selectivity of catalytic nitriles hydrogenation by structure regulation in atomically dispersed Pd catalysts

The product selectivity in catalytic hydrogenation of nitriles is strongly correlated with the structure of the catalyst. In this work, two types of atomically dispersed Pd species stabilized on the defect-rich nanodiamond-graphene (ND@G) hybrid support: single Pd atoms (Pd₁/ND@G) and fully exposed Pd clusters with average three Pd atoms (Pd_n/ND@G), were fabricated. The two catalysts show distinct difference in the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of nitriles. The Pd₁/ND@G catalyst preferentially generates secondary amines (Turnover frequency (TOF@333 K 709 h⁻¹, selectivity >98%), while the Pd_n/ND@G catalyst exhibits high selectivity towards primary amines (TOF@313 K 543 h⁻¹, selectivity >98%) under mild reaction conditions. Detailed characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the structure of atomically dispersed Pd catalysts governs the dissociative adsorption pattern of H₂ and also the hydrogenation pathway of the benzylideneimine (BI) intermediate, resulting in different product selectivity over Pd₁/ND@G and Pd_n/ND@G, respectively. The structure-performance relationship established over atomically dispersed Pd catalysts provides valuable insights for designing catalysts with tunable selectivity.

Structural Water Molecules Confined in Soft and Hard Nanocavities as Bright Color Emitters

Molecules confined in the nanocavity and nanointerface exhibit rich, unique physicochemical properties, e.g., the chromophore in the β-barrel can of green fluorescent protein (GFP) exhibits tunable bright colors. However, the physical origin of their photoluminescence (PL) emission remains elusive. To mimic the microenvironment of the GFP protein scaffold at the molecule level, two groups of nanocavities were created by molecule self-assembly using organic chromophores and by organic functionalization of mesoporous silica, respectively. We provide strong evidence that structural water molecules confined in these nanocavities are color emitters with a universal formula of {X⁺·(OH^-·H₂O)·(H₂O) _n-1}, in which X is hydrated protons (H₃O⁺) or protonated amino (NH₃ ⁺) groups as an anchoring point, and that the efficiency of PL is strongly dependent on the stability of the main emitter centers of the structural hydrated hydroxide complex (OH^-·H₂O), which is a key intermediate to mediate electron transfer dominated by proton transfer at confined nanospace. Further controlled experiments and combined characterizations by time-resolved steady-state and ultrafast transient optical spectroscopy unveil an unusual multichannel radiative and/or nonradiative mechanism dominated by quantum transient states with a distinctive character of topological excitation. The finding of this work underscores the pivotal role of structurally bound H₂O in regulating the PL efficiency of aggregation-induced emission luminogens and GFP.

Tuning Ligand-Coordinated Single Metal Atoms on TiO2 and their Dynamic Response during Hydrogenation Catalysis

Ligand-coordinated supported catalysts (LCSCs) are of growing interest for heterogeneous single-atom catalysis. Here, the effect of the choice of organic ligand on the activity and stability of TiO₂ -supported single-atom Pt-ligand catalysts was investigated for ethylene hydrogenation. The activity of these catalysts showed a significant dependence on the choice of ligand and also correlated with coordination number for Pt-ligand and Pt-Cl^- . Of the three ligands examined in this study, the one with the lowest Pt coordination number, 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione (PDO), showed the lowest reaction temperature and highest reaction rate, likely due to those metal sites being more accessible to reactant adsorption. In-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) experiments showed that the activity also correlated with good heterolytic dissociation of hydrogen, which was supported by OH/OD exchange experiments and was the rate-determining step of the hydrogenation reaction. In these in-situ XAS experiments up to 190 °C, the supported Pt-ligand catalyst showed excellent stability against structural and chemical change. Instead of Pt, the PDO ligand could be coordinated with Ir on TiO₂ to form Ir LCSCs that showed slow activation by loss of Ir-Cl bonds, then excellent stability in the hydrogenation of ethylene. These results provide the chance to engineer ligand-coordinated supported catalysts at the single-atom catalyst level by the choice of ligand and enable new applications at relatively high temperature.

Adsorbate-assisted migration of the metal atom in atomically dispersed catalysts: An ab initio molecular dynamics study

We present a phenomenological study of dynamical evolution of the active site in atomically dispersed catalysts in the presence of reaction intermediates associated with CO oxidation and low-temperature water-gas shift reaction. Using picosecond ab initio molecular dynamics, we probe the initiation of adsorbate-induced diffusion of atomically dispersed platinum on rutile TiO₂(110). NVT trajectories spanning 5 ps at 500 K reveal that the dynamical stability of the metal atom is governed by its local coordination to the support and adsorbate. Adsorbates that bind the strongest to Pt typically also lead to the fastest diffusion of the metal atom, and all adsorbates weaken Pt-support interactions, resulting in higher diffusion coefficients compared to bare Pt. We note, however, the absence of quantitative correlations between adsorption characteristics (Pt Bader charge, adsorbate binding energy) and ensemble-averaged quantities (diffusion coefficients). A recurring structural motif identified in several trajectories is a near-linear coordination between support oxygen, Pt, and specific adsorbates. These geometries, on account of enhanced metal support interactions, stabilize Pt and inhibit migration over picosecond timescales. We also identify hydrogen bonding events between the adsorbate and support for OH-containing groups. In the case of OH-bound Pt, for instance, we believe that short-lived H-bonds between OH and support promote Pt migration in the beginning of the NVT trajectory, while the subsequent formation of a near-linear geometry stabilizes the Pt atom despite the continued formation of short-lived hydrogen bonds. These observations are consistent with prior studies that report stabilization of isolated metal atoms in the presence of hydroxyl groups.
