Rare-Earth-Metal Methyl and Methylidene Complexes Stabilized by TpR,R'-Scorpionato Ligands─Size Matters

Homoleptic tetramethylaluminates Ln(AlMe4)3 react with KTptBu,Me (TptBu,Me = tris(3-tBu-5-Me-pyrazolyl)borato) to yield rare-earth-metal methylidene complexes (TptBu,Me)Ln(μ3-CH2)[(μ-Me)AlMe2]2 (Ln = La, Ce, Nd). The lanthanum reaction is prone to additional C-H- and B-N-bond activation, affording coproducts La[HB(pzMe,tBu)(pzCMe2,Me)2][(μ-CH2)(μ-Me)AlMe2]2 and [La(μ-pztBu,Me)(AlMe4)2]2 (pztBu,Me = 3-tBu-5-Me-pyrazolato). The protonolysis reaction of Ln(AlMe4)3 and HpztBu,Me provides more efficient access to [Ln(μ-pztBu,Me)(AlMe4)2]2 (Ln = La, Nd). Treatment of Ln(AlMe4)3 with KTpMe,Me led to methylidene complexes (TpMe,Me)Ln(μ3-CH2)[(μ-Me)AlMe2]2 (Ln = Nd, Sm) or bis(tetramethylaluminate) complexes (TpMe,Me)Ln(AlMe4)2 (Ln = Y, Lu). The neodymium reaction generated methine derivative (TpMe,Me)Nd[(μ4-CH)(AlMe2)2(μ-pz,Me,Me)][(μ-Me)AlMe2] as a minor coproduct. The reaction of Ln(GaMe4)3 (Ln = Y, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Ho) with HTptBu,Me gave methylidene complexes (TptBu,Me)Ln(μ3-CH2)[(μ-Me)GaMe2]2 (Ln = La, Ce, Nd, Sm) and alkyl complexes (TptBu,Me)LnMe[(μ-Me)GaMe3] (Ln = Y, Ho), while competing B-N bond activation reactions produced GaMe2[BH(Me)(μ-pztBu,Me)2] and (TptBu,Me)Ln(η2-pztBu,Me)[(μ-Me)GaMe3] (Ln = Y, Ho). The steric impact of the TpR,Me ligands was examined by cone angle calculations. Rare-earth-metal methylidene complexes (TptBu,Me)Ln(μ3-CH2)[(μ-Me)EMe2]2 (E = Al, Ga) successfully promote carbonyl methylenation reactions upon addition of ketone.

Rare-earth metal ethylene and ethyne complexes

Guanidinate homometallic rare-earth ethyl complexes [LLn(μ2-η1:η2-Et)(Et)]2 (Ln = Y(1-Y), Lu(1-Lu)) and heterobimetallic rare-earth ethyl complexes LLn(Et)(μ2-η1:η2-Et)(μ2-η1-Et)(AlEt2) (Ln = Y(2-Y), Lu(2-Lu)) have been synthesized by the treatment of LLn(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)2 (L = (PhCH2)2NC(NC6H3iPr2-2,6)2) with different equivalents of AlEt3 in toluene at ambient temperature. Interestingly, the unprecedented rare-earth ethyne complex [LY(μ2-η1-Et)2(AlEt)]2(μ4-η1:η1:η2:η2-C2H2) (3-Y) containing a [C2H2]4- unit was afforded from 2-Y. The formation mechanism study on 3-Y was carried out by DFT calculations. Furthermore, the nature of the bonding of 3-Y was also revealed by NBO analysis. The reactions of LLn(CH2 C6H4NMe2-o)2 (Ln = Y, Lu) with AlEt3 (4 equiv.) in toluene at 50 °C produced firstly the non-Cp rare-earth ethylene complex LY(μ3-η1:η1:η2-C2H4)[(μ2-η1-Et)(AlEt2)(μ2-η1-Et)2(AlEt)] (4-Y), and the Y/Al ethyl complex LY[(μ2-η1-Et)2(AlEt2)]2 (5-Y) as an intermediate of 4-Y was isolated from the reaction of LY(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)2 with AlEt3 (4 equiv.) in toluene at -10 °C.

Terminal dysprosium and holmium organoimides

Terminal rare-earth-metal imide complexes TptBu,MeLn(NC6H3iPr2-2,6)(dmap) of the mid-late rare-earth elements dysprosium and holmium were synthesized via double methane elimination of Lewis acid stabilized dialkyl precursors TptBu,MeLnMe(GaMe4) with primary aniline derivative H2NC6H3iPr2-2,6 (H2NAriPr). Exploiting the weaker Ln-CH3⋯[GaMe3] interaction compared to the aluminium congener, addition of the aniline derivative leads to the mixed methyl/anilido species TptBu,MeLnMe(HNAriPr) which readily eliminate methane after being exposed to the Lewis base DMAP ([double bond, length as m-dash]N,N-dimethyl-4-aminopyridine). Under the same conditions, [AlMe3]-stabilized dimethyl rare-earth-metal complexes transform immediately to Lewis acid bridged imides TptBu,MeLn(μ2-NC6H3Me2-2,6)(μ2-Me)AlMe2 (Ln = Dy, Ho). DMAP/THF donor exchange is accomplished by treatment of TptBu,MeLn(NC6H3iPr2-2,6)(dmap) with 9-BBN in THF while the terminal imides readily insert carbon dioxide to afford carbamate complexes.

A binuclear guanidinate yttrium carbyne complex: unique reactivity toward unsaturated C-N, C-O and C-S bonds

A guanidinato-stabilized binuclear yttrium carbyne complex [(PhCH2)2NC(NC6H3iPr2-2,6)2]2Y2(μ2-Me)(AlMe3)2(μ4-CH) (1) was synthesized via C-H bond activation and its versatile reactivities were investigated. Complex 1 underwent σ-bond metathesis with PhSSPh and nucleophilic addition with PhCN to form the corresponding yttrium thiolate complex 3 and aza-allyl complex 4 respectively. Additionally, the rare yttrium carbide complex 5 was also prepared by treatment of complex 1 with S8. Interestingly, in the reaction with PhNCS, the C[double bond, length as m-dash]S double bond was cleaved, followed by C-H bond activation to give the yttrium sulfide complex 7 with a ketenimine dianion ligand. Unexpectedly, the reaction of complex 1 with CO (1 atm) resulted in deoxygenative coupling of CO, to afford mono- or dioxo-yttrium complexes at different temperatures. The mechanism of the possible formation processes of complexes 3 and 9 was elucidated by DFT calculations.

[(CH3 )Al(CH2 )]12 : Methylaluminomethylene (MAM-12)

The molecular structure of enigmatic "poly(aluminium-methyl-methylene)" (first reported in 1968) has been unraveled in a transmetalation reaction with gallium methylene [Ga8 (CH2 )12 ] and AlMe3 . The existence of cage-like methylaluminomethylene moieties was initially suggested by the reaction of rare-earth-metallocene complex [Cp*2 Lu{(μ-Me)2 AlMe2 }] with excess AlMe3 affording the deca-aluminium cluster [Cp*4 Lu2 (μ3 -CH2 )12 Al10 (CH3 )8 ] in low yield (Cp*=C5 Me5 ). Treatment of [Ga8 (CH2 )12 ] with excess AlMe3 reproducibly gave the crystalline dodeca-aluminium complex [(CH3 )12 Al12 (μ3 -CH2 )12 ] (MAM-12). Revisiting a previous approach to "poly(aluminium-methyl-methylene" by using a (C5 H5 )2 TiCl2 /AlMe3 (1 : 100) mixture led to amorphous solids displaying solubility behavior and spectroscopic features similar to those of crystalline MAM-12. The gallium methylene-derived MAM-12 was used as an efficient methylene transfer reagent for ketones.

Rare-earth-metal half-sandwich complexes incorporating methyl, methylidene, and hydrido ligands

Complexes Cp*₃Ln₃(μ₂-CH₃)₃(μ₃-CH₂)(μ₃-H)(thf)₃ (Ln = Y, Dy; Cp* = C₅Me₅) are formed via elimination of CH₄ and C₂H₄ from the respective trinuclear polymethyl complexes [Cp*Ln(μ₂-CH₃)₂]₃, involving the methyl/methylidene complex Cp*₃Ln₃(μ₂-CH₃)₃(μ₃-CH₂)(μ₃-CH₃)(thf)₂ as an intermediate. Compound Cp*₃Y₃(μ₂-CH₃)₃(μ₃-CH₂)(μ₃-H)(thf)₃ displays "Schrock-type" nucleophilic carbene reactivity, converting ketones into the corresponding terminal alkenes. Treatment of Cp*₃Y₃(μ₂-CH₃)₃(μ₃-CH₂)(μ₃-H)(thf)₃ with [D₄]methanol proved accessibility of all small-group functionalities as indicated by the simultaneous formation of deuterated HD and deuterated methanes CH₃D and CH₂D₂.

Open-Shell Early Lanthanide Terminal Imides

Group 3- and 4f-element organometallic chemistry and reactivity are decisively driven by the rare-earth-metal/lanthanide (Ln) ion size and associated electronegativity/ionicity/Lewis acidity criteria. For these reasons, the synthesis of terminal "unsupported" imides [Ln═NR] of the smaller, closed-shell Sc(III), Lu(III), Y(III), and increasingly covalent Ce(IV) has involved distinct reaction protocols while derivatives of the "early" large Ln(III) have remained elusive. Herein, we report such terminal imides of open-shell lanthanide cations Ce(III), Nd(III), and Sm(III) according to a new reaction protocol. Lewis-acid-stabilized methylidene complexes [Tp^tBu,MeLn(μ₃-CH₂){(μ₂-Me)MMe₂}₂] (Ln = Ce, Nd, Sm; M = Al, Ga) react with 2,6-diisopropylaniline (H₂NAr^iPr) via methane elimination. The formation of arylimide complexes is governed by the Ln(III) size, the Lewis acidity of the group 13 metal alkyl, steric factors, the presence of a donor solvent, and the sterics and acidity (pK_a) of the aromatic amine. Crucially, terminal arylimides [Tp^tBu,MeLn(═NAr^iPr)(THF)₂] (Ln = Ce, Nd, Sm) are formed only for M = Ga, and for M = Al, the Lewis-acid-stabilized imides [Tp^tBu,MeLn(NAr^iPr)(AlMe₃)] (Ln = Ce, Nd, Sm) are persistent. In stark contrast, the [GaMe₃]-stabilized imide [Tp^tBu,MeLn(NAr^iPr)(GaMe₃)] (Ln = Nd, Sm) is reversibly formed in noncoordinating solvents.

Transformation of the sp2 Carbanion to Carbene with Subsequent 1,1-Migratory Insertion and Nucleophilic Substitution in Rare-Earth Metal Chemistry

The development of Fischer-type electrophilic carbene chemistry with early transition metals has been a great challenge due to the fact that such metals in their high oxidation states lack the d electrons to stabilize the electrophilic carbene. Herein, we disclose the first experimental and theoretical findings of in situ transformation of an sp² carbanion to a Fischer-type electrophilic carbene with rare-earth metals in their high oxidation state with a d⁰ electron via electron transfer. The carbene may undergo 1,1-migratory insertion into an adjacent RE-C(sp³) bond, and an unprecedented ring opening of the indole ring of the ligand occurs when the carbenes undergo nucleophilic substitution with a special organolithium reagent o-Me₂NC₆H₄CH₂Li. The key to success is the uniquely tailored novel ligand systems featuring a suitable conjugate building block (^-C═C-C═N) bearing an sp² carbanion connected to the rare-earth metal center.

Trapping an unusual pentacoordinate carbon atom in a neutral trialuminum complex

A neutral trialuminum complex incorporates a pentacoordinate carbon through a methylidene bridge linking the three metal atoms. The rigid electron-deficient Al₃ core stabilizes the hypercoordinate carbon atom resulting in the shortest equatorial Al-C distance reported for such an Al₃-(μ³-CH₂) unit.

Trinuclear scandium methylidyne complexes stabilized by pentamethylcyclopentadienyl ligands

The first examples of scandium methylidyne complexes [(Cp*)Sc(μ2-X)]3(μ3-CH) (Cp* = C5Me5; X = Br, Me, OMe), free of Lewis acids, can be achieved in high yields from [(Cp*)ScMe2]2 through a facile route. The chemical and geometrical flexibility to incorporate organic substrates indicates a rich chemistry of complex [(Cp*)Sc(μ2-OMe)]3(μ3-CH).

2-Butene Tetraanion Bridged Dinuclear Samarium(III) Complexes via Sm(II)-Mediated Reduction of Electron-Rich Olefins

While reduction reactions are ubiquitous in chemistry, it is very challenging to further reduce electron-rich compounds, especially the anionic ones. In this work, the reduction of 1,3-butadienyl dianion, the anionic conjugated olefin, has been realized by divalent rare-earth metal compounds (SmI₂), resulting in the formation of novel 2-butene tetraanion bridged disamarium(III) complexes. Density functional theory (DFT) analyses reveal two features: (i) the single electron transfer (SET) from 4f atomic orbitals (AOs) of each Sm center to the antibonding π*-orbitals of 1,3-butadienyl dianion is feasible and the new HOMO formed by the bonding interaction between Sm 5d orbitals (AOs) and the π*-orbitals of 1,3-butadienyl dianion can accept favorably 2e^- from 4f AOs of Sm(II); (ii) the 2-butene tetraanionic ligand serves as a unique 10e^- donating system, in which 4e^- act as two σ-donation bonding interactions while the rest 6e^- as three π-donation bonding interactions. The disamarium(III) complexes represent a unique class of the bridged bis-alkylidene rare-earth organometallic complexes. The ligand-based reductive reactivity of 2-butene tetraanion bridged disamarium(III) complexes demonstrates that 2-butene tetraanionic ligand serves as a 3e^- reductant toward cyclooctatetraene (COT) to provide doubly COT-supported disamarabutadiene complexes. The reaction of the disamarium(III) complexes with Cp*Li produces the doubly Cp*-coordinated Sm(III) complexes via salt metathesis. In addition, the reaction with Mo(CO)₆ affords the oxycyclopentadienyl dinuclear complex via CO insertion.

Carbonyl group and carbon dioxide activation by rare-earth-metal complexes

The rare-earth elements (Ln = Sc, Y, La-Lu) are widely used in stoichiometric and catalytic carbonyl group transformations. Sufficient availability, non-toxicity, high oxophilicity, tunable ion size/Lewis acidity and enhanced ligand exchangeability have been major driving factors for their successful implementation. Routinely employed reagents for stoichiometric carbonyl group transformations are divalent ytterbium and samarium compounds (e.g., ketone reduction), bimetallic CeCl3/LiR (C-C coupling), or ceric ammonium nitrate CAN (cyclic ketone oxidation). Rare-earth-metal triflates, and in particular Sc(OTf)3, are prominent examples of Lewis acid catalysts for versatile use in organic synthesis (e.g., Aldol and Michael reactions). Moreover, Ln(ii) and Ln(iii) complexes efficiently catalyze the (co)polymerization of carbonyl group-containing monomers including lactones, lactides, acrylates, and carbon dioxide. Featuring the most notorious greenhouse gas, CO2 is currently assessed as a cheap, abundant, and non-toxic C1 building block. Ln(iii) complexes are not only capable of efficient CO2 capture via reversible insertion but also of CO2 activation for catalytic conversions (copolymerization/cycloaddition with epoxides). This perspective focuses on structurally elucidated Ln complexes resulting from ketone or carbonyl derivative activation/insertion as well as carbon dioxide insertion products. The respective compounds will be sorted by structural motifs and, if applicable, details on reactivity and feasibility of catalytic reactions are presented. The article is subdivided in three parts: (i) donor and insertion products of ketones and aldehydes, (ii) redox-enhanced activation of carbonyl derivatives, and (iii) CO2 insertion/redox products and homogeneous catalytic conversion.

Trimethylscandium

The hitherto unknown homoleptic tetramethylaluminate complex [Sc(AlMe₄)₃] could be obtained by reacting the ate complex [Li₃ScMe₆(thf)_1.2] with AlMe₃ in the cold. It cocrystallizes with AlMe₃ as [Sc(AlMe₄)₃(Al₂Me₆)_0.5] and decomposes at ambient temperature in n-pentane via multiple C-H bond activations to the mixed methyl/methylidene complex [Sc₃(μ₃-CH₂)₂(μ₂-CH₃)₃(AlMe₄)₂(AlMe₃)₂]. Donor-induced methylaluminate cleavage of [Sc(AlMe₄)₃(Al₂Me₆)_0.5] produced [ScMe₃]_n in good yield, which could be derivatized with trimethyltriazacyclononane (Me₃TACN) to form the structurally characterizable [(Me₃TACN)ScMe₃]. Additionally, half-sandwich complex [Cp*Sc(AlMe₄)₂] and sandwich complex [Cp*₂Sc(AlMe₄)] were accessible by salt metathesis reactions from [Sc(AlMe₄)₃(Al₂Me₆)_0.5] and KCp* (Cp* = C₅Me₅). ⁴⁵Sc NMR spectroscopy was applied as a significant probe to evidence the existence of [ScMe₃]_n. Compounds [(Me₃TACN)ScMe₃] (+624.6 ppm) and [ScMe₃(thf)_x] (+601.7 ppm) gave large ⁴⁵Sc NMR shifts, revealing the strong deshielding effect of the σ-bonded alkyl ligands on the scandium nuclei. Ultimately, cationized [Sc(AlMe₄)₃(Al₂Me₆)_0.5] was employed in isoprene polymerization, leading to polymers in high yields (>95%) and with high (>90%) cis-1,4-polyisoprene content.

Geminal Dianions Stabilized by Main Group Elements

This review is dedicated to the chemistry of stable and isolable species that bear two lone pairs at the same C center, i.e., geminal dianions, stabilized by main group elements. Three cases can thus be considered: the geminal-dilithio derivative, for which the two substituents at C are neutral, the yldiide derivatives, for which one substituent is neutral while the other is charged, and finally the geminal bisylides, for which the two substituents are positively charged. In this review, the syntheses and electronic structures of the geminal dianions are presented, followed by the studies dedicated to their reactivity toward organic substrates and finally to their coordination chemistry and applications.

Synthesis of a terminal Ce(iv) oxo complex by photolysis of a Ce(iii) nitrate complex

Reaction of [Ce(NR2)3] (R = SiMe3) with LiNO3 in THF, in the presence of 2,2,2-cryptand, results in the formation of the Ce(iii) "ate" complex, [Li(2,2,2-cryptand)][Ce(κ2-O2NO)(NR2)3] (1) in 38% yield. Photolysis of 1 at 380 nm affords [Li(2,2,2-cryptand)][Ce(O)(NR2)3] (2), in 33% isolated yield after reaction work-up. Complex 2 is the first reported example of a Ce(iv) oxo complex where the oxo ligand is not supported by hydrogen bonding or alkali metal coordination. Also formed during photolysis are [Li(2,2,2-cryptand)]2[(μ3-O){Ce(μ-O)(NR2)2}3] (3) and [Li(2,2,2-cryptand)][Ce(OSiMe3)(NR2)3] (4). Their identities were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Complex 4 can also be prepared via reaction of [Ce(NR2)3] with LiOSiMe3 in THF, in the presence of 2,2,2-cryptand. When synthesized in this fashion, 4 can be isolated in 47% yield. To rationalize the presence of 2, 3, and 4 in the reaction mixture, we propose that photolysis of 1 first generates 2 and NO2, via homolytic cleavage of the N-O bond in its nitrate co-ligand. Complex 2 then undergoes decomposition via two separate routes: (1) ligand scrambling and oligomerization to form 3; and, (2) abstraction of a trimethylsilyl cation to form a transient Ce(iv) silyloxide, [CeIV(OSiMe3)(NR2)3], followed by 1e- reduction to form 4. Alternatively, complex 4 could form directly via ·SiMe3 abstraction by 2.

Formation and ligand-based reductive chemistry of bridged bis-alkylidene scandium(iii) complexes

Bridged bis-alkylidene Sc(iii) complexes featuring a 2-butene-1,1,4,4-tetraanion are synthesized and show unexpected ligand-based two-electron or four-electron reduction reactivity towards different oxidants.

The chemistry of rare-earth carbene and alkylidene complexes including their synthesis, structure and reaction is a challenging issue because of their high reactivity (or instability) and the lack of synthetic methods. In this work, we report the first synthesis of the bridged bis-alkylidene complexes which feature a 2-butene-1,1,4,4-tetraanion and four Sc–C(sp³) bonds by the reaction of 1,4-dilithio-1,3-butadienes with ScCl₃. This reaction proceeds via two key intermediates: an isolable scandacyclopentadiene and a proposed scandacyclopropene. The scandacyclopentadiene undergoes β,β′-C–C bond cleavage to generate the scandacyclopropene, which then dimerizes to afford the bridged bis-alkylidene complex via a cooperative double metathesis reaction. Reaction chemistry study of the bridged bis-alkylidene complex reveals their ligand-based reduction reactivity towards different oxidants such as hexachloroethane, disulfide and cyclooctatetraene.

Cerium(IV) Imido Complexes: Structural, Computational, and Reactivity Studies

A series of alkali metal capped cerium(IV) imido complexes, [M(solv)_x][Ce═N(3,5-(CF₃)₂C₆H₃)(TriNOx)] (M = Li, K, Rb, Cs; solv = TMEDA, THF, Et₂O, or DME), was isolated and fully characterized. An X-ray structural investigation of the cerium imido complexes demonstrated the impact of the alkali metal counterions on the geometry of the [Ce═N(3,5-(CF₃)₂C₆H₃)(TriNOx)]^- moiety. Substantial shortening of the Ce═N bond was observed with increasing size of the alkali metal cation. The first complex featuring an unsupported, terminal multiple bond between a Ce(IV) ion and a ligand fragment was also isolated by encapsulation of a Cs⁺ counterion with 2.2.2-cryptand. This complex shows the shortest recorded Ce═N bond length of 2.077(3) Å. Computational investigation of the cerium imido complexes using DFT methods showed a relatively larger contribution of the cerium 5d orbital than the 4f orbital to the Ce═N bonds. The [K(DME)₂][Ce═N(3,5-(CF₃)₂C₆H₃)(TriNOx)] complex cleaves the Si-O bond in (Me₃Si)₂O, yielding the [(Me₃SiO)Ce^IV(TriNOx)] adduct. The reaction of the rubidium capped imido complex with benzophenone resulted in the formation of a rare Ce(IV)-oxo complex, that was stabilized by a supramolecular, tetrameric oligomerization of the Ce═O units with rubidium cations.

Highly Reactive Scandium Phosphinoalkylidene Complex: C-H and H-H Bonds Activation

The first scandium phosphinoalkylidene complex was synthesized and structurally characterized. The complex has the shortest Sc-C bond lengths reported to date (2.089(3) Å). DFT calculations reveal the presence of a three center π interaction in the complex. This scandium phosphinoalkylidene complex undergoes intermolecular C-H bond activation of pyridine, 4-dimethylamino pyridine and 1,3-dimethylpyrazole at room temperature. Furthermore, the complex rapidly activates H₂ under mild conditions. DFT calculations also demonstrate that the C-H activation of 1,3-dimethylpyrazole is selective for thermodynamic reasons and the relatively slow reaction is due to the need of fully breaking the chelating effect of the phosphino group to undergo the reaction whereas this is not the case for H₂.

Insights into the enhanced CeN triple bond in the HCeN molecule

Herein, an experimental study of the vibrational spectra of HCeN was carried out in solid argon, followed by theoretical investigations of molecular structures and the nature of CeN bond.

Small molecule activation by mixed methyl/methylidene rare earth metal complexes

Diverse reactivity patterns of mixed tetramethyl/methylidene rare-earth complexes bearing bulky benzamidinate coligands with PhCN, alkynes, and CS₂ have been established and fully characterized.

Rare-earth metal methylidene complexes with Ln3(μ3-CH2)(μ3-Me)(μ2-Me)3 core structure

Although protected from intermolecular deactivation by a picket-fence-type arrangement of bulky amido ligands the CH₂²⁻ moiety is readily converted into oxo species.
