Abstract
Herein, a novel and expedient method was established for the synthesis of polyarylfuran derivatives. The coupling of allenylphosphine oxide and bromophenol or bromonaphthol enabled by visible light and palladium catalysis directly furnishes polyarylfuran skeletons, which involves a radical tandem cyclization and cascade C(sp3)-P(V) bond cleavage. This protocol features easy operation, a broad substrate scope, and a high step economy, affording polyarylfurans in moderate to good yields.

Abstract
Addition of the P-H bond in bis(mesitoyl)phosphine, HP(COMes)2 (BAPH), to a wide variety of activated carbon-carbon double bonds as acceptors was investigated. While this phospha-Michael addition does not proceed in the absence of an additive or catalyst, excellent results were obtained with stoichiometric basic potassium or caesium salts. Simple amine bases can be employed in catalytic amounts, and tetramethylguanidine (TMG) in particular is an outstanding catalyst that allows the preparation of bis(acyl)phosphines, R-P(COMes)2 , under very mild conditions in excellent yields after only a short time. All phosphines RP(COMes)2 can subsequently be oxidized to the corresponding bis(acyl)phosphane oxides, RPO(COMes)2 , a substance class belonging to the most potent photoinitiators for radical polymerizations known to date. Thus, a simple and highly atom economic method has been found that allows the preparation of a broad range of photoinitiators adapted to their specific field of application even on a large scale.

Abstract
This feature article highlights the discovery and development of phosphanoxyl complex chemistry starting from (neutral) low-coordinate phosphorus radicals and the quest of metal ligation effects. We describe synthesis and reactions of precursors, namely 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinoxyl (TEMPO) substituted phosphane tungsten(0) complexes. Trapping reactions of transient phosphanoxyl complexes, formed via thermal homolytic N-O bond cleavage, as well as their use in radical polymerisations are illustrated, thus revealing an interesting reactivity dichotomy. DFT calculations provide insight into thermal stabilities of precursors and the resulting spin density distributions (SDDs) in these reactive intermediates. Systematic studies on the dependance of the electron delocalisation in phosphanoxyl complexes have been performed examining different substitution pattern at phosphorus and different co-ligand combinations at the tungsten(0) center. Preliminary results on Mn and Fe complexes are reported.

Abstract
The halogen-atom transfer (XAT) is one of the most important and applied processes for the generation of carbon radicals in synthetic chemistry. In this review, we summarize and highlight the most important aspects associated with XAT and the impact it has had on photochemistry and photocatalysis. The organization of the material starts with the analysis of the most important mechanistic aspects and then follows a subdivision based on the nature of the reagents used in the halogen abstraction. This review aims to provide a general overview of the fundamental concepts and main agents involved in XAT processes with the objective of offering a tool to understand and facilitate the development of new synthetic radical strategies.

Abstract
Lipid oxidations initiated by free radicals are usually considered to undergo peroxidation, a chain process starting with hydrogen abstraction by an initiator, followed by O2 uptake. While this peroxidation mechanism is widely accepted and sometimes taken for granted, here we provide evidence of the oxidation of both of the unsaturated and saturated fatty acid chains in phospholipids initiated by photoinitiator 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TMDPO) at the air-water interface, and no peroxidation products are observed in these reactions. A unique field-induced droplet ionization mass spectrometry (FIDI-MS) methodology which is capable of the selective online sampling of monolayers of molecules that reside at the air-water interface is employed to detect the products. We have shown that the double bonds on the oleyl chains of the lipids are first oxidized into epoxides, after which other saturated carbon atoms are oxidized into carbonyl groups. We anticipate that this work will draw more attention to the complexity of the lipid oxidation chemistry initiated by free radicals.

Abstract
Tailor-made photoinitiators play an important role for efficient radical polymerisations in aqueous media, especially in hydrogel manufacturing. Bis(acyl)phosphane oxides (BAPOs) are among the most active initiators. Herein, we show that they display a remarkable photochemistry in aqueous and alcoholic media: Photolysis of BAPOs in the presence of water or alcohols provides a new delocalized π-radical, which does not participate in the polymerization. It either converts into a monoacylphosphane oxide acting as a secondary photoactive species or it works as a one-electron reducing agent. Upon the electron-transfer process, it again produces a dormant photoinitiator. We have established the structure and the chemistry of this π radical using steady-state and time-resolved (CIDEP) EPR together with ESI-MS, NMR spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. Our results show that bis(acyl)phosphane oxides act as bifunctional reagents when applied in aqueous and alcoholic media.

Abstract
Bisacylphosphane oxides (BAPOs) are established as photoinitiators for industrial applications. Light irradiation leads to their photolysis, producing radicals. Radical species induce oxidative stress in cells and may cause cell death. Hence, BAPOs may be suitable as photolatent cytotoxic agents, but such applications have not been investigated yet. Herein, we describe for the first time a potential use of BAPOs as drugs for photolatent therapy. We show that treatment of the breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 and of breast epithelial cells MCF-10A with BAPOs and UV irradiation induces apoptosis. Cells just subjected to BAPOs or UV irradiation alone are not affected. The induction of apoptosis depend on the BAPO and the irradiation dose. We proved that radicals are the active species since cells are rescued by an antioxidant. Finally, an optimized BAPO-derivative was designed which enters the cells more efficiently and thus leads to stronger effects at lower doses.

Abstract
Herein the first P-C(sp3 ) bond cleavage and radical alkynylation of α-phosphorus alcohols to construct phosphonoalkynes is reported. The phosphorus radical is generated upon P-C bond cleavage reaction via the alkoxyl radical through photoredox catalysis with cyclic iodine(III) reagents. Various arylphosphinoyl-, alkylphosphinoyl-, phosphonate-, and phosphonic amide alcohols serve as radical phosphorus precursors to construct phosphonoalkynes for the first time.

Abstract
Femtosecond UV-pump/mid-infrared-probe spectroscopy was used to explore in detail the primary photochemical events of the free radical initiator, (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)diphenylphosphine oxide, in liquid dichloromethane solution at room temperature. Following electronic excitation of its lowest excited singlet state, S1, the radical initiator undergoes an intersystem crossing to the triplet ground state, T1, with a time constant of 135 ps. A subsequent α-cleavage occurs from the triplet state with a time constant of 15 ps and yields a trimethylbenzoyl radical together with a diphenylphosphinoyl radical. Transient absorptions from the S1 and T1 states are observed that can be assigned to the P═O stretching mode and the symmetric in-plane deformation mode of the trimethylphenyl moiety of the radical initiator.

Abstract
Addition reaction of a radical to the double bond of a monomer, which is important at early stage of photopolymerization, has been studied by time-resolved (TR-) and pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic methods. Reactions of one phosphorus-centered and three carbon-centered radicals attacking to several monomers have been employed. Intermediate radicals were identified by analyzing the recorded TR-EPR spectra, and the reaction rate constants were determined by the electron spin-echo detection method proposed by Weber and Turro [J. Phys. Chem. A, 2003, 107 (18), 3326 - 3334]. The quantum chemical calculation shows that the rate constants for the addition reactions are well-explained by introducing two factors of "enthalpy effect" and "polar effect" to control the activation barrier height. It was observed that the rate constants of the phosphorus-centered radical were larger than those of carbon-centered radicals for some monomers. The difference in the rate constants was argued on the basis of frequency factor and activation barrier both of which are influenced by an atom of radical center.

Abstract
The sodium salt of the new bis(mesitoyl)phosphinic acid (BAPO-OH) can be prepared in a very efficient one-pot synthesis. It is well soluble in water and hydrolytically stable for at least several weeks. Remarkably, it acts as an initiating agent for the surfactant-free emulsion polymerization (SFEP) of styrene to yield monodisperse, spherical nanoparticles. Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TR-EPR) and chemically induced electron polarisation (CIDEP) indicate preliminary mechanistic insights.
