Topology-Based Functionalization of Robust Chiral Zr-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Catalytic Enantioselective Hydrogenation

Highly Stable 72-Nuclearity Nanocages for Efficient Synthesis of Aryl Nitriles via Ni/Cu Synergistic Catalysis

Seeking noble-metal-free catalysts for efficient synthesis of aryl nitriles under mild conditions poses a significant challenge due to the use of hypertoxic cyanides or high-pressure/temperature NH3/O2 in conventional synthesis processes. Herein, we developed a novel framework 1 assembled by [Ni72] nanocages with excellent solvents/pH stability. To investigate the structure-activity relationship of catalytic performance, several isostructural MOFs with different molar ratios of Ni/Cu by doping Cu2+ into framework 1 (Ni0.59Cu0.41 (2), Ni0.81Cu0.19 (3), Ni0.88Cu0.12 (4), and Ni0.92Cu0.08 (5)) were prepared. Catalytic studies revealed that catalyst 3 exhibited remarkable performance in the synthesis of aryl nitriles, utilizing a formamide alternative to hypertoxic NaCN/KCN. Notably, catalyst 3 achieved an excellent TOF value of 9.8 h-1. Furthermore, catalyst 3 demonstrated its applicability in a gram-scale experiment and maintained its catalytic performance even after six recycling cycles, owing to its high stability resulting from significant electrostatic and orbital interactions between the Ni center and ligands as well as a large SOMO-LUMO energy gap supported by DFT calculations. Control experiments and DFT calculations further revealed that the excellent catalytic performance of catalyst 3 originated from the synergistic effect of Ni/Cu. Importantly, this work not only provides a highly feasible method to construct highly stable MOFs containing multinuclear nanocages with exceptional catalytic performance but also represents the first example of a heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of aryl nitriles using formamide as the cyanide source.

Potential Application Prospects of Biomolecule-Modified Two-Dimensional Chiral Nanomaterials in Biomedicine

Chirality, one of the most fundamental properties of natural molecules, plays a significant role in biochemical reactions. Nanomaterials with chiral characteristics have superior properties, such as catalytic properties, optoelectronic properties, and photothermal properties, which have significant potential for specific applications in nanomedicine. Biomolecular modifications such as nucleic acids, peptides, proteins, and polysaccharides are sources of chirality for nanomaterials with great potential for application in addition to intrinsic chirality, artificial macromolecules, and metals. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, as opposed to other dimensions, due to proper surface area, extensive modification sites, drug loading potential, and simplicity of preparation, are prepared and utilized in diagnostic applications, drug delivery research, and tumor therapy. Current advanced studies on 2D chiral nanomaterials for biomedicine are focused on novel chiral development, structural control, and materials sustainability applications. However, despite the advances in biomedical research, chiral 2D nanomaterials still confront challenges such as the difficulty of synthesis, quality control, batch preparation, chiral stability, and chiral recognition and selectivity. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the origins, synthesis, applications, and challenges of 2D chiral nanomaterials with biomolecules as cargo and chiral modifications and highlight their potential roles in biomedicine.

Ionic liquid containing high-density polyethylene supported tungstate: a novel, efficient, and highly recoverable catalyst

Synthesis and catalytic application of polymeric-based nanocomposites are important subjects among researchers due to their high lipophilicity as well as high chemical and mechanical stability. In the present work, a novel nanocomposite material involving ionic liquid and high-density polyethylene supported tungstate (PE/IL-WO4 =) is synthesized, characterized and its catalytic application is investigated. The coacervation method was used to incorporate 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium bromide ([MOIm] [Br]) ionic liquid in high-density polyethylene, resulting in a PE/IL composite. Subsequently, tungstate was anchored on PE/IL to give PE/IL-WO4 = catalyst. The PXRD, FT-IR, EDX, TGA, and SEM analyses were used to characterize the PE/IL-WO4 = composite. This material demonstrated high catalytic efficiency in the synthesis of bioactive tetrahydrobenzo[a]xanthen-11-ones under green conditions. The recoverability and leching tests were performed to investigate the stability and durability of the designed PE/IL-WO4 = catalyst under applied conditions.

Postsynthetic Modification of the Nonanuclear Node in a Zirconium Metal-Organic Framework for Photocatalytic Oxidation of Hydrocarbons

Heterogeneous catalysis plays an indispensable role in chemical production and energy conversion. Incorporation of transition metals into metal oxides and zeolites is a common strategy to fine-tune the activity and selectivity of the resulting solid catalysts, as either the active center or promotor. Studying the underlying mechanism is however challenging. Decorating the metal-oxo clusters with transition metals in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) via postsynthetic modification offers a rational approach to construct well-defined structural models for better understanding of the reaction mechanism. Therefore, it is important to expand the materials scope beyond the currently widely studied zirconium MOFs consisting of Zr6 nodes. In this work, we report the design and synthesis of a new (4,12)-connected Zr-MOF with ith topology that consists of rare Zr9 nodes. FeIII was further incorporated onto the Zr9 nodes of the framework, and the resulting MOF material exhibits significantly enhanced activity and selectivity toward the photocatalytic oxidation of toluene. This work demonstrates a delicate ligand design strategy to control the nuclearity of Zr-oxo clusters, which further dictates the number and binding sites of transition metals and the overall photocatalytic activity toward C-H activation. Our work paves the way for future exploration of the structure-activity study of catalysts using MOFs as the model system.

High Selectivity Cofactor NADH Regeneration Organic Iridium Complexes Used for High-Efficiency Chem-Enzyme Cascade Catalytic Hydrogen Transfer

Our research demonstrated that novel pentamethylcyclopentadienyl (Cp*) iridium pyridine sulfonamide complex PySO2NPh-Ir (7) could highly specifically catalyze nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) into the corresponding reducing cofactor NADH in cell growth media containing various biomolecules. The structures and catalytic mechanism of 7 were studied by single-crystal X-ray, NMR, electrochemical, and kinetic methods, and the formation of iridium hydride species Ir-H was confirmed to be the plausible hydride-transfer intermediate of 7. Moreover, benefiting from its high hydrogen-transfer activity and selectivity for NADH regeneration, 7 was used as an optimal metal catalyst to establish a chem-enzyme cascade catalytic hydrogen-transfer system, which realized the high-efficiency preparation of l-glutamic acid by combining with l-glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH).

In Situ Neutron Diffraction of Zn-MOF-74 Reveals Nanoconfinement-Induced Effects on Adsorbed Propene

Even though confinement was identified as a common element of selective catalysis and simulations predicted enhanced properties of adsorbates within microporous materials, experimental results on the characterization of the adsorbed phase are still rare. In this study, we provide experimental evidence of the increase of propene density in the channels of Zn-MOF-74 by 16(2)% compared to the liquid phase. The ordered propene molecules adsorbed within the pores of the MOF have been localized by in situ neutron powder diffraction, and the results are supported by adsorption studies. The formation of a second adsorbate layer, paired with nanoconfinement-induced short intermolecular distances, causes the efficient packing of the propene molecules and results in an increase of olefin density.

as a Versatile and Predictable Chiral Stationary Phase for the Resolution of Racemic Mixtures

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become promising materials for multiple applications due to their controlled dimensionality and tunable properties. The incorporation of chirality into their frameworks opens new strategies for chiral separation, a key technology in the pharmaceutical industry as each enantiomer of a racemic drug must be isolated. Here, we describe the use of a combination of computational modeling and experiments to demonstrate that high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) columns packed with TAMOF-1 as the chiral stationary phase are efficient, versatile, robust, and reusable with a wide array of mobile phases (polar and non-polar). As proof of concept, in this article, we report the resolution with TAMOF-1 HPLC columns of nine racemic mixtures with different molecular sizes, geometries, and functional groups. Initial in silico studies allowed us to predict plausible separations in chiral compounds from different families, including terpenes, calcium channel blockers, or P-stereogenic compounds. The experimental data confirmed the validity of the models and the robust performance of TAMOF-1 columns. The added value of in silico screening is an unprecedented achievement in chiral chromatography.

Reticular Chemistry in Its Chiral Form: Axially Chiral Zr(IV)-Spiro Metal-Organic Framework as a Case Study

The interplay of primary organic ligands and inorganic secondary building units (SBUs) has led to a continual boom of reticular chemistry, particularly metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Subtle variations of organic ligands can have a significant impact on the ultimate structural topology and consequently, the material's function. However, the role of ligand chirality in reticular chemistry has rarely been explored. In this work, we report the organic ligand chirality-controlled synthesis of two zirconium-based MOFs (Spiro-1 and Spiro-3) with distinct topological structures as well as a temperature-controlled formation of a kinetically stable phase (Spiro-4) based on the carboxylate-functionalized inherently axially chiral 1,1'-spirobiindane-7,7'-phosphoric acid ligand. Specifically, Spiro-1 is a homochiral framework comprising only enantiopure S-spiro ligands and has a unique 4,8-connected sjt topology with large 3D interconnected cavities, while Spiro-3 contains equal amounts of S- and R-spiro ligands, resulting in a racemic framework of 6,12-connected edge-transitive alb topology with narrow channels. Interestingly, the kinetic product Spiro-4 obtained with racemic spiro ligands is built of both hexa- and nona-nuclear zirconium clusters acting as 9- and 6-connected nodes, respectively, giving rise to a newly discovered azs net. Notably, the preinstalled highly hydrophilic phosphoric acid groups combined with large cavity, high porosity, and outstanding chemical stability endow Spiro-1 with remarkable water vapor sorption performance, whereas Spiro-3 and Spiro-4 show poor performances due to inappropriate pore systems and structural fragility upon the water adsorption/desorption process. This work highlights the important role of ligand chirality in manipulating the framework topology and function and would further enrich the development of reticular chemistry.

Engineering UiO-68-Typed Homochiral Metal-Organic Frameworks for the Enantiomeric Separation of Fmoc-AAs and Mechanism Study

Homochiral metal-organic frameworks (HMOFs) have been widely investigated in the application of enantiomeric separation. Nonetheless, it remains a significant challenge to explore the effect of multiple weak interactions between HMOF adsorbents and chiral adsorbates on enantiomeric separation performance still. In this work, robust chiral amine-alcohol-functionalized UiO-68-typed Zr-HMOFs 1-3 with the same hydrogen-bonding sites but slightly different π-binding sites were prepared for the enantioseparation of amino acid derivatives (Fmoc-AAs) with large π-binding groups. As a consequence of multiple host-guest interactions, these Zr-HMOFs exhibit speedy adsorption and high adsorption capacity for Fmoc-L/D-AAs and dissimilar enantioselectivity for the adsorption of their enantiomers. Materials 1 and 2 exhibit excellent enantioselective separation performance for Fmoc-valine with a single terminal π-binding group, while material 3 displays excellent enantioselective separation performance for Fmoc-phenylalanine and Fmoc-tryptophan with π-binding groups at both ends. As evidently demonstrated by our experimental and density functional theory (DFT) computational results, when the number of π-binding groups preset in the confined chiral space of adsorbents matches the number of π-binding groups of chiral adsorbates, the synergism of π-π or σ-π interactions will increase enantioselectivity; otherwise, the competition interactions from redundant identical binding sites will weaken enantioselectivity. Our case not only provides a tremendously typical system for investigating the collaborative discrimination of multiple weak interactions and exploring the impact of relatively excessive binding sites of HMOF adsorbents or chiral adsorbates on the enantioselective separation performance but also provides guidance for targeted functional modifications of high-performance chiral porous materials.

Tröger's Base Chemistry in Solution and in Zr(IV)-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Tröger's base (TB) and its derivatives have been studied extensively due to their unique concave shape stemming from the endomethylene strap. However, the strap-clipped TB chemistry has been largely overlooked in metal-organic framework (MOF) solids, leading to a gap in our knowledge within this field. In this work, we report the in situ strap elimination of a carboxylate-carrying TB in the presence of formic acid, both in solution and in Zr(IV)-based MOFs. In the solution system, the methanodiazocine nucleus can be exclusively transformed into an N,N'-diformyl-decorated phenhomazine derivative, regardless of the solvent used (DMF, DMA, or DEF), as unambiguously uncovered by single crystal X-ray crystallography. In contrast, while in the MOF synthetic system, the degree of derivatization reaction can be effectively controlled to give either the secondary diamine or formyl-decorated diamine, depending on the solvent used (DMF or DEF), resulting in the formation of two Zr-MOFs with 8-connected bcu (NU-1900) and 12-connected fcu (NU-407) topologies, respectively. The derivatization mechanism is proposed to be topology-guided and dependent on the local acid concentration during the MOF formation processes. Moreover, we discovered a novel post-synthetically water-induced in situ linker formylation process in NU-1900 through sequential formic acid elimination, migration, and condensation processes, affording an isostructural framework with the same linker as in NU-407, which further corroborates our proposed mechanism. Additionally, the highly defective NU-1900 with abundant accessible Zr sites was demonstrated to be an outstanding catalyst for the detoxification of a nerve agent simulant with a half-life of less than 1 min.

Precise Design and Deliberate Tuning of Turn-On Fluorescence in Tetraphenylpyrazine-Based Metal−Organic Frameworks

The manipulation on turn-on fluorescence in solid state materials attracts increasing interests owing to their widespread applications. Herein we report how the nonradiative pathways of tetraphenylpyrazine (TPP) units in metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) systems could be hindered through a topological design approach. Two MOFs single crystals of different topology were constructed via the solvothermal reaction of a TPP-based 4,4′,4^″,4^‴-(pyrazine-2,3,5,6-tetrayl) tetrabenzoic acid (H₄TCPP) ligand and metal cations, and their mechanisms of formation have been explored. Compared with the innate low-frequency vibrational modes of flu net Tb-TCPP-1, such as phenyl ring torsions and pyrazine twists, Tb-TCPP-2 adopts a shp net, so the dihedral angle of pyrazine ring and phenyl arms is larger, and the center pyrazine ring in TPP unit is coplanar, which hinders the radiationless decay of TPP moieties in Tb-TCPP-2. Thereby Tb-TCPP-2 exhibits a larger blue-shifted fluorescence and a higher fluorescence quantum yield than Tb-TCPP-1, which is consistent with the reduced nonradiative pathways. Furthermore, Density functional theory (DFT) studies also confirmed aforementioned tunable turn-on fluorescence mechanism. Our work constructed TPP-type MOFs based on a deliberately topological design approach, and the precise design of turn-on fluorescence holds promise as a strategy for controlling nonradiative pathways.

Rh-Catalyzed Highly Enantioselective Hydrogenation of Functionalized Olefins with Chiral Ferrocenylphosphine-Spiro Phosphonamidite Ligands

A highly efficient Rh-catalyzed hydrogenation of functionalized olefins has been realized by a new family of highly rigid chiral ferrocenylphosphine-spiro phosphonamidite ligands. Excellent enantiocontrol (>99% ee in most cases) was achieved with a wide range of α-dehydroamino acid esters and α-enamides. This practicable catalytic system was further applied in the scalable synthesis of highly optically pure key intermediates of cinacalcet and d-phenylalanine.

Mesitylene Tribenzoic Acid as a Linker for Novel Zn/Cd Metal-Organic Frameworks

Three new Metal-Organic Frameworks, containing mesitylene tribenzoic acid as a linker and zinc (1) or cadmium as metals (2,3), were synthesized through solvothermal reactions, using DMF/ethanol/water as solvents, at temperatures of 80 °C (structures 1 and 3) and 120 °C (structure 2). Following single-crystal X-ray diffraction, it was found that 1 and 3 crystallize in the P2₁/c and C2/c space groups and form 2D networks, while 2 crystallizes in the Fdd2 space group, forming a 3D network. All three frameworks, upon heating, were found to be stable up to 350 °C. N₂ sorption isotherms revealed that 1 displays a BET area of 906 m²/g. Moreover, the porosity of this framework is still present after five cycles of sorption/desorption, with a reduction of 14% of the BET area, down to 784 m²/g, after the fifth cycle. The CO₂ loading capacity of 1 was found to be 2.9 mmol/g at 0 °C.

Chiral Metal-Organic Frameworks

In the past two decades, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) or porous coordination polymers (PCPs) assembled from metal ions or clusters and organic linkers via metal-ligand coordination bonds have captivated significant scientific interest on account of their high crystallinity, exceptional porosity, and tunable pore size, high modularity, and diverse functionality. The opportunity to achieve functional porous materials by design with promising properties, unattainable for solid-state materials in general, distinguishes MOFs from other classes of materials, in particular, traditional porous materials such as activated carbon, silica, and zeolites, thereby leading to complementary properties. Scientists have conducted intense research in the production of chiral MOF (CMOF) materials for specific applications including but not limited to chiral recognition, separation, and catalysis since the discovery of the first functional CMOF (i.e., d- or l-POST-1). At present, CMOFs have become interdisciplinary between chirality chemistry, coordination chemistry, and material chemistry, which involve in many subjects including chemistry, physics, optics, medicine, pharmacology, biology, crystal engineering, environmental science, etc. In this review, we will systematically summarize the recent progress of CMOFs regarding design strategies, synthetic approaches, and cutting-edge applications. In particular, we will highlight the successful implementation of CMOFs in asymmetric catalysis, enantioselective separation, enantioselective recognition, and sensing. We envision that this review will provide readers a good understanding of CMOF chemistry and, more importantly, facilitate research endeavors for the rational design of multifunctional CMOFs and their industrial implementation.

Designing Sites in Heterogeneous Catalysis: Are We Reaching Selectivities Competitive With Those of Homogeneous Catalysts?

A critical review of different prominent nanotechnologies adapted to catalysis is provided, with focus on how they contribute to the improvement of selectivity in heterogeneous catalysis. Ways to modify catalytic sites range from the use of the reversible or irreversible adsorption of molecular modifiers to the immobilization or tethering of homogeneous catalysts and the development of well-defined catalytic sites on solid surfaces. The latter covers methods for the dispersion of single-atom sites within solid supports as well as the use of complex nanostructures, and it includes the post-modification of materials via processes such as silylation and atomic layer deposition. All these methodologies exhibit both advantages and limitations, but all offer new avenues for the design of catalysts for specific applications. Because of the high cost of most nanotechnologies and the fact that the resulting materials may exhibit limited thermal or chemical stability, they may be best aimed at improving the selective synthesis of high value-added chemicals, to be incorporated in organic synthesis schemes, but other applications are being explored as well to address problems in energy production, for instance, and to design greener chemical processes. The details of each of these approaches are discussed, and representative examples are provided. We conclude with some general remarks on the future of this field.

Leveraging Chiral Zr(IV)-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks To Elucidate Catalytically Active Rh Species in Asymmetric Hydrogenation Reactions

One of the most widely employed strategies to produce chiral molecules involves the asymmetric hydrogenation of functionalized olefins using rhodium catalysts. Despite their excellent performance, the exact identity of the active Rh species is still ambiguous as each site may plausibly feature one or two phosphorus ligands. In this work, we used a sequential postsynthetic modification approach to successfully incorporate single-site Rh species into a zirconium-based metal-organic framework comprised of chiral spinol-based ligands. These Rh species feature one phosphorus ligand per Rh, which contrasts with the molecular analogue that contains two phosphorus ligands per Rh site. Following extensive characterization of the Rh-monophosphorus material using techniques including solid-state NMR and extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, we studied their catalytic performance in the asymmetric hydrogenations of enamides and α-dehydroamino acid esters and observed excellent yields and enantioselectivities (up to 99.9% ee). Notably, the Rh-monophosphorus catalyst is 5 times more active than the homogeneous Rh-biphosphorus control, which we attributed to the higher activity of the single-site Rh-monophosphorus species and the confined MOF cavities that can enrich reactants. In addition, we observed a unique topology-dependent behavior in which linker expansion leads to the formation of a novel Zr-MOF with a distinct 4,8-connected net that cannot be phosphorylated, presumably due to intense tensile strain and steric repulsion present within this framework. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of this single-site Rh-monophosphorus catalyst in the gram-scale synthesis of (R)-cinacalcet hydrochloride, a first-in-class drug in the therapy of secondary hyperparathyroidism and parathyroid carcinoma, with 99.1% ee.

Exploring the Role of Cluster Formation in UiO Family Hf Metal-Organic Frameworks with in Situ X-ray Pair Distribution Function Analysis

The structures of Zr and Hf metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are very sensitive to small changes in synthetic conditions. One key difference affecting the structure of UiO MOF phases is the shape and nuclearity of Zr or Hf metal clusters acting as nodes in the framework; although these clusters are crucial, their evolution during MOF synthesis is not fully understood. In this paper, we explore the nature of Hf metal clusters that form in different reaction solutions, including in a mixture of DMF, formic acid, and water. We show that the choice of solvent and reaction temperature in UiO MOF syntheses determines the cluster identity and hence the MOF structure. Using in situ X-ray pair distribution function measurements, we demonstrate that the evolution of different Hf cluster species can be tracked during UiO MOF synthesis, from solution stages to the full crystalline framework, and use our understanding to propose a formation mechanism for the hcp UiO-66(Hf) MOF, in which first the metal clusters aggregate from the M₆ cluster (as in fcu UiO-66) to the hcp-characteristic M₁₂ double cluster and, following this, the crystalline hcp framework forms. These insights pave the way toward rationally designing syntheses of as-yet unknown MOF structures, via tuning the synthesis conditions to select different cluster species.

Support-Activity Relationship in Heterogeneous Catalysis for Biomass Valorization and Fine-Chemicals Production

Heterogeneous catalysts are progressively expanding their field of application, from high-throughput reactions for traditional industrial chemistry with production volumes reaching millions of tons per year, a sector in which they are key players, to more niche applications for the production of fine chemicals. These novel applications require a progressive utilization reduction of fossil feedstocks, in favor of renewable ones. Biomasses are the most accessible source of organic precursors, having as advantage their low cost and even distribution across the globe. Unfortunately, they are intrinsically inhomogeneous in nature and their efficient exploitation requires novel catalysts. In this process, an accurate design of the active phase performing the reaction is important; nevertheless, we are often neglecting the importance of the support in guaranteeing stable performances and improving catalytic activity. This review has the goal of gathering and highlighting the cases in which the supports (either derived or not from biomass wastes) share the worth of performing the catalysis with the active phase, for those reactions involving the synthesis of fine chemicals starting from biomasses as feedstocks.

Heterogenizing a Homogeneous Nickel Catalyst Using Nanoconfined Strategy for Selective Synthesis of Mono- and 1,2-Disubstituted Benzimidazoles

A homogeneous Ni-phenanthroline catalyst was successfully immobilized into the cavities of a metal-organic framework, ZIF-8. The as-synthesized heterogeneous catalyst, Ni-Phen@ZIF, represents the first MOF based catalyst that enables dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols with aromatic diamines for selective synthesis of both mono- and 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazoles. The catalyst survived under harsh basic conditions, characterized by SEM, TEM, BET, PXRD, and EDX elemental mappings. The presence of the nanoconfined Ni-phenanthroline complex and the formation of extra Lewis acid sites during catalysis in the Ni-Phen@ZIF structure, confirmed by TPD analysis and kinetic experiments, might be responsible for higher activity and selectivity.

A composite triboelectric nanogenerator based on flexible and transparent film impregnated with ZIF-8 nanocrystals

The triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), based on the triboelectrification coupled with electrostatic induction, can directly convert ambient mechanical energy into electric energy. However, the output performance of TENG is still low and demands further improvement to speed up the commercial application. In this work, we demonstrate a TENG based on a flexible and transparent composite film made of PDMS and ZIF-8. When the amount of the ZIF-8 is 4 wt%, the generated output current and voltage of the TENG are gradually increased up to 16.3μA and 176 V, which are 210% and 230% higher than that of TENG without ZIF-8, respectively. Impregnated ZIF-8 which exhibits a positive polarity lowers the effective work function of the PDMS and enhance the surface charge density, verified by Kelvin probe force microscope measurement.

Dual-Selective Catalysis in Dephosphorylation Tuned by Hf6-Containing Metal-Organic Frameworks Mimicking Phosphatase

Selective dephosphorylation is full of great challenges in the field of biomimetic catalysis. To mimic the active sites of protein phosphatase, Hf-OH-Hf motif-containing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were obtained and structurally characterized, which are assembled from [Hf48Ni6] cubic nanocages and exhibit good stability in various solvents and acid/base solutions. Catalytic investigations suggest as-synthesized Hf-Ni and Hf-Ni-NH 2 display accurate type-selectivity (selectively catalyzed P-O rather than S-O or C-O bonds) and position-selectivity (selectively catalyzed phosphomonoesters over phosphodiesters) for the hydrolysis of phosphoesters. Reaction kinetic studies further revealed the high activity of the catalytic sites in these catalysts, and the unique catalytic selectivity and high activity are comparable to phosphatase. Additionally, these MOF catalysts possess good recursivity and hypotoxicity. Control experiments (including Hf- and Zr-based isomorphous MOFs) and theoretical calculations indicate that both triplet nickel and Hf6 clusters play significant roles in the unique binding site and favorable binding energy. To our knowledge, this is the first example of selective dephosphorylation through MOF catalysts as mimic enzymes, which paves a potential way for the development of specific therapeutic MOFs.

Transient Catenation in a Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Framework and Its Effect on Mechanical Stability and Sorption Properties

Interpenetration of two or more sublattices is common among many metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Herein, we study the evolution of one zirconium cluster-based, 3,8-connected MOF from its non-interpenetrated (NU-1200) to interpenetrated (STA-26) isomer. We observe this transient catenation process indirectly using ensemble methods, such as nitrogen porosimetry and X-ray diffraction, and directly, using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The approach detailed here will serve as a template for other researchers to monitor the interpenetration of their MOF samples at the bulk and single-particle limits. We investigate the mechanical stability of both lattices experimentally by pressurized in situ X-ray diffraction and nanoindentation as well as computationally with density functional theory calculations. Both lines of study reveal that STA-26 is considerably more mechanically stable than NU-1200. We conclude this study by demonstrating the potential of these MOFs and their mixed phases for the capture of gaseous n-hexane, used as a structural mimic for the chemical warfare agent sulfur mustard gas.

Highly Stable Zr(IV)-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Chiral Separation in Reversed-Phase Liquid Chromatography

Separation of racemic mixtures is of great importance and interest in chemistry and pharmacology. Porous materials including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely explored as chiral stationary phases (CSPs) in chiral resolution. However, it remains a challenge to develop new CSPs for reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC), which is the most popular chromatographic mode and accounts for over 90% of all separations. Here we demonstrated for the first time that highly stable Zr-based MOFs can be efficient CSPs for RP-HPLC. By elaborately designing and synthesizing three tetracarboxylate ligands of enantiopure 1,1'-biphenyl-20-crown-6, we prepared three chiral porous Zr(IV)-MOFs with the framework formula [Zr₆O₄(OH)₈(H₂O)₄(L)₂]. They share the same flu topological structure but channels of different sizes and display excellent tolerance to water, acid, and base. Chiral crown ether moieties are periodically aligned within the framework channels, allowing for stereoselective recognition of guest molecules via supramolecular interactions. Under acidic aqueous eluent conditions, the Zr-MOF-packed HPLC columns provide high resolution, selectivity, and durability for the separation of a variety of model racemates, including unprotected and protected amino acids and N-containing drugs, which are comparable to or even superior to several commercial chiral columns for HPLC separation. DFT calculations suggest that the Zr-MOF provides a confined microenvironment for chiral crown ethers that dictates the separation selectivity.

Remarkable Structural Diversity between Zr/Hf and Rare-Earth MOFs via Ligand Functionalization and the Discovery of Unique (4, 8)-c and (4, 12)-connected Frameworks

Ligand modification in MOFs provides great opportunities not only for the development of functional materials with new or enhanced properties but also for the discovery of novel structures. We report here that a sulfone-functionalized tetrahedral carboxylate-based ligand is capable of directing the formation of new and fascinating MOFs when combined with Zr⁴⁺/Hf⁴⁺ and rare-earth metal cations (RE) with improved gas-sorption properties. In particular, the resulting M-flu-SO₂ (M: Zr, Hf) materials display a new type of the augmented flu-a net, which is different as compared to the flu-a framework formed by the nonfunctionalized tetrahedral ligand. In terms of properties, a remarkable increase in the CO₂ uptake is observed that reaches 76.6% and 61.6% at 273 and 298 K and 1 bar, respectively. When combined with REs, the sulfone-modified linker affords novel MOFs, RE-hpt-MOF-1 (RE: Y³⁺, Ho³⁺, Er³⁺), which displays a fascinating (4, 12)-coordinated hpt net, based on nonanuclear [RE₉(μ₃-Ο)₂(μ₃-ΟΗ)₁₂(-COO)₁₂] clusters that serve as hexagonal prismatic building blocks. In the absence of the sulfone groups, we discovered that the tetrahedral linker directs the formation of new RE-MOFs, RE-ken-MOF-1 (RE: Y³⁺, Ho³⁺, Er³⁺, Yb³⁺), that display an unprecedented (4, 8)-coordinated ken net based on nonanuclear RE₉-clusters, to serve as bicapped trigonal prismatic building units. Successful activation of the representative member Y-ken-MOF-1 reveals a high BET surface area and total pore volume reaching 2621 m² g^-1 and 0.95 cm³ g^-1, respectively. These values are the highest among all RE MOFs based on nonanuclear clusters and some of the highest in the entire RE family of MOFs. The present work uncovers a unique structural diversity existing between Zr/Hf and RE-based MOFs that demonstrates the crucial role of linker design. In addition, the discovery of the new RE-hpt-MOF-1 and RE-ken-MOF-1 families of MOFs highlights the great opportunities existing in RE-MOFs in terms of structural diversity that could lead to novel materials with new properties.
