Enantioselective Synthesis of Triple Helicenes by Cross-Cyclotrimerization of a Helicenyl Aryne and Alkynes via Dynamic Kinetic Resolution

Synthesis and resolution of multi-chiral carbonyl-N embedded hetero[7]helicenes for efficient circularly polarized luminescence

Novel carbonyl-N embedded hetero[7]helicene diastereomers incorporating axially chiral binaphthyl were facilely synthesized and separated. The separated homochiral hetero[7]helicenes exhibit intense green photoluminescence and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with luminescence dissymmetry factors (glum) of 1.4 × 10-3 due to the intrinsic helical multiple-resonance skeleton.

Cyclic Azahelicene Dimers Showing Bright Circularly Polarized Luminescence and Selective Fluoride Recognition

Although helicenes are promising molecules, the synthetic difficulty and tediousness have often been problems, and only small amounts of optically pure helicenes have been obtained by using chiral HPLC in most cases. Herein, aza[7]helicenes or closed-aza[7]helicenes with (1R)-menthyl substituents were selectively synthesized via the intramolecular Scholl reaction, and the diastereomeric pairs were separated by silica gel column chromatography. The optically pure helicenes were further transformed into the corresponding cyclic dimers, and the chiroptical properties were investigated. The rigid π-frameworks of the dimers led to the high molar extinction coefficients and fluorescence quantum yields, while the twisted helicene moieties induced clear Cotton effects and CPL in the visible region, and the high CPL brightness (BCPL) was achieved. Furthermore, the cyclic dimers were found to have the macrocyclic cavity with the two NH groups suitable for the selective binding of a fluoride anion, which induced significantly redshifted fluorescence and CPL in the red region.

S-Shaped Helical Singlet Diradicaloid and Its Transformation to Circumchrysene via a Two-Stage Cyclization

Polycyclic hydrocarbons with diradical and polyradical characters usually display unique reactivities in ring-cyclization reactions. However, such reactions are rarely used to construct π-extended polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Here, we describe the synthesis of an S-shaped doubly helical singlet diradicaloid compound and its facile transformation into an unprecedented circumchrysene via a two-stage ring cyclization, which includes: (1) an eletrocylization from diradicaloid precursor and (2) a Scholl reaction. The reaction mechanism was investigated through in situ spectroscopic studies, assisted by theoretical calculations. This reaction sequence yields an optically resolved π-extended [5]helicene derivative with a fluorescence quantum yield up to 85% and a circularly polarized luminescence brightness up to 6.05 M-1 cm-1 in the far-red to near-infrared regions. This sequence also yielded a highly delocalized circumchrysene molecule, exhibiting large electron delocalization, moderate fluorescence quantum yield, and multistage redox properties.

π-Extended Diaza[7]helicenes with Dual Negatively Curved Heptagons: Extensive Synthesis and Spontaneous Resolution into Strippable Homochiral Lamellae with Helical Symmetry

We report a unique category of π-extended diaza[7]helicenes with double negative curvatures. This is achieved by two-fold regioselective heptagonal cyclization of the oligoarylene-carbazole precursors through either intramolecular C-H arylation or Scholl reaction. The fusion of two heptagonal rings in the helical skeleton dramatically increases the intramolecular strain and forces the two terminal carbazole moieties to stack in a compressed fashion. The presence of the deformable negatively curved heptagonal rings endows the resulting diaza[7]helicenes with dynamic chiral skeletons, aggregation-induced emission feature and relatively low racemization barrier of ca. 25.6 kcal mol-1 . Further π-extension on the carbazole moieties subsequently leads to a more sophisticated C2 -symmetric homochiral triple helicene. Notably, these π-extended diaza[7]helicenes show structure-dependent stacking upon crystallization, switching from heterochiral packing to intra-layer homochiral stacking. Interestingly, the C2 -symmetric triple helicene molecules spontaneously resolve into a homochiral lamellar structure with 31 helix symmetry. Upon ultrasonication in a nonsolvent, the crystals can be readily exfoliated into large-area ultrathin nanosheets with height of ca. 4.4 nm corresponding to two layers of stacked triple helicene molecules and relatively thicker nanosheets constituted by even-numbered molecular lamellae. Moreover, regular hexagonal thin platelets with size larger than 30 μm can be readily fabricated by flash aggregation.

Helicoselective Synthesis of Indolohelicenoids through Organocatalytic Central-to-Helical Chirality Conversion

We report the helicoselective and convergent construction of indolohelicenoids with excellent efficiency and stereocontrol. This reaction proceeds through a chiral-phosphoric-acid-catalyzed enantioselective cycloaddition and eliminative aromatization sequence, which can be finely controlled by adjusting the reaction temperature. Mechanistic studies reveal that the chiral phosphoric acid cooperatively serves as both a bifunctional and Brønsted acid catalyst, enabling one-pot central-to-helical chirality conversion. Additionally, the optical properties of the synthesized indolohelicenoids were characterized to explore their potential applications in organic photoelectric materials.

Enantioselective synthesis of [4]helicenes by organocatalyzed intermolecular C-H amination

Catalytic asymmetric synthesis of helically chiral molecules has remained an outstanding challenge and witnessed fairly limited progress in the past decades. Current methods to construct such compounds almost entirely rely on catalytic enantiocontrolled fused-ring system extension. Herein, we report a direct terminal peri-functionalization strategy, which allows for efficient assembling of 1,12-disubstituted [4]carbohelicenes via an organocatalyzed enantioselective amination reaction of 2-hydroxybenzo[c]phenanthrene derivates with diazodicarboxamides. The key feature of this approach is that the stereochemical information of the catalyst could be transferred into not only the helix sense but also the remote C-N axial chirality of the products, thus enabling the synthesis of [4]- and [5]helicenes with both structural diversity and stereochemical complexity in good efficiency and excellent enantiocontrol. Besides, the large-scale preparations and representative transformations of the helical products further demonstrate the practicality of this protocol. Moreover, DFT calculations reveal that both the hydrogen bonds and the C-H---π interactions between the substrates and catalyst contribute to the ideal stereochemical control.

Recent advances in Pd-catalyzed asymmetric cyclization reactions

Over the past few decades, there have been major developments in transition metal-catalyzed asymmetric cyclization reactions, enabling the convenient access to a wide spectrum of structurally diverse chiral carbo- and hetero-cycles, common skeletons found in fine chemicals, natural products, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and materials. In particular, a plethora of enantioselective cyclization reactions have been promoted by chiral palladium catalysts owing to their outstanding features. This review aims to collect the latest advancements in enantioselective palladium-catalyzed cyclization reactions over the past eleven years, and it is organized into thirteen sections depending on the different types of transformations involved.

Luminescent Chiral Furanol-PAHs via Straightforward Ni-Catalysed Csp2 -F Functionalization: Mechanistic Insights into the Scholl Reaction

Here we report the stepwise synthesis of new nanographenes (NGs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) obtained via Scholl ring fusion applied at aromatic homologation compounds, which are obtained through one-step Ni-catalysed Csp2 -F functionalization. The latter are rapidly accessed valid precursors for the Scholl reaction, and screening of experimental conditions allowed us to describe for the first time furanol-bearing PAHs. Mechanistic insights are obtained by DFT to rationalize the formation of the furanol PAHs under moderately acidic conditions. All PAHs and NGs synthesized show moderate/weak fluorescent properties, and all PAHs crystallized show some degree of curvature and are obtained as racemic mixtures. Enantiomeric separation by chiral HPLC of one furanol-bearing PAH allowed the study of their chiroptical CD properties.

Catalytic Enantioselective Nucleophilic Addition to Arynes by a New Quaternary Guanidinium Salt-Based Phase-Transfer Catalyst

Owing to the mild generation methods, arynes have been widely used in synthetic chemistry. However, achieving asymmetric organocatalytic reactions with arynes remains a formidable and infrequent challenge, primarily because these neutral and transient species tend to spontaneously quench. To address this issue, a solid-liquid phase-transfer strategy is devised in which the generation speed of arynes could be controlled by the in situ generated fluoride-based chiral phase-transfer catalyst. In this study, we present a catalytic enantioselective nucleophilic addition reaction involving arynes, utilizing an amino amide-based guanidinium salt QG•X. Furthermore, we demonstrate the broad compatibility of this reaction with various arynes and cyclic/acyclic β-keto amides, leading to the creation of diverse α-aryl quaternary stereocenters with good stereoselectivity. Mechanistic investigations have uncovered the potential involvement of a chiral intramolecular cationic-anionic pair and HF during the ion exchange between QG•X and CsF for nucleophile activation and aryne generation. Additionally, DFT calculations suggested that the observed high levels of enantioselectivity can be attributed to steric repulsion and the cumulative noncovalent interactions between the catalysts and substrates.

Enantioselective synthesis of chiral quinohelicenes through sequential organocatalyzed Povarov reaction and oxidative aromatization

Heterohelicenes are of increasing importance in the fields of materials science, molecular recognition, and asymmetric catalysis. However, enantioselective construction of these molecules, especially by organocatalytic methods, is challenging, and few methods are available. In this study, we synthesize enantioenriched 1-(3-indol)-quino[n]helicenes through chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed Povarov reaction followed by oxidative aromatization. The method has a broad substrate scope and offers rapid access to an array of chiral quinohelicenes with enantioselectivities up to 99%. Additionally, the photochemical and electrochemical properties of selected quinohelicenes are explored.

Intramolecular Azo Coupling Reaction of Binaphthyl Compounds: Synthesis of Pyrazole-Containing Helicene-Like Molecules

A method for accessing pyrazole-containing helicene-like molecules from easily accessible NOBIN derivatives was developed. The reaction proceeded efficiently via diazonium salt intermediates, which provided a series of helicene-like molecular products in yields of 77%-89% regardless of their steric and electronic natures. The photophysical properties of the products were investigated. The 3,3'-disubstituted molecules showed a characteristic blue shift in their emission spectra. Product derivatizations were conducted, and interesting reactivities toward nucleophiles were observed.

A C-H activation-based enantioselective synthesis of lower carbo[n]helicenes

The three-dimensional structure of carbohelicenes has fascinated generations of molecular chemists and has been exploited in a wide range of applications. Their strong circularly polarized luminescence has attracted considerable attention in recent years due to promising applications in new optical materials. Although the enantioselective synthesis of fused carbo- and heterohelicenes has been achieved, a direct catalytic enantioselective method allowing the synthesis of lower, non-fused carbo[n]helicenes (n = 4-6) is still lacking. We report here that Pd-catalysed enantioselective C-H arylation in the presence of a unique bifunctional phosphine-carboxylate ligand provides a simple and general access to these lower carbo[n]helicenes. Computational mechanistic studies indicate that both the C-H activation and reductive elimination steps contribute to the overall enantioselectivity. The observed enantio-induction seems to arise from a combination of non-covalent interactions and steric repulsion between the substrate and ligand during the two key reductive elimination steps. The photophysical and chiroptical properties of the synthesized scalemic [n]helicenes have been systematically studied.

Circularly polarized luminescence of helicenes: A data-informed insight

Helicenes are an interesting scaffold for chiroptical properties and in particular circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). In this short review, we collect the luminescence (g_lum ) and absorption (g_abs ) dissymmetry factors associated to the first Cotton effect of the electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectrum. Considering the data for 170 [n]-helicenes (n = 4-11), overall we found reasonable correlations between g_lum and g_abs . Despite a few notable exceptions, this would confirm a similarity in the stereochemistry of the ground and emitting excited states for most helicenes. These results may be useful in rationalizing chiroptical data and help chemists in designing new helicene structures with the desired CPL properties.

Asymmetric reactions involving aryne intermediates

Although arynes are usually considered fleeting intermediates, they are highly valuable synthons because they enable the introduction of aromatic rings and the simultaneous formation of new bonds at two sites. Although catalytic reactions using transition metals are excellent method for constructing complex polycyclic aromatic molecules in a single step, the use of asymmetric catalysis for the capture of arynes remains a crucial goal for the progress of aryne chemistry. Catalytic asymmetric reactions of arenes are challenging, requiring sufficient interactions between the neutral and highly reactive short-lived aryne intermediates in a stereo-controlled fashion. In addition, spontaneous decomposition, as well as side reactions, has hindered their development and, until recently, highly enantioselective reactions using arynes had remained elusive. This Review highlights asymmetric reactions using arynes, featuring diastereoselective, enantioselective and catalytic enantioselective reactions.

Electronic Control of the Scholl Reaction: Selective Synthesis of Spiro vs Helical Nanographenes

Scholl oxidation has become an essential reaction in the bottom-up synthesis of molecular nanographenes. Herein, we describe a Scholl reaction controlled by the electronic effects on the starting substrate (1 a, b). Anthracene-based polyphenylenes lead to spironanographenes under Scholl conditions. In contrast, an electron-deficient anthracene substrate affords a helically arranged molecular nanographene formed by two orthogonal dibenzo[fg,ij]phenanthro-[9,10,1,2,3-pqrst]pentaphene (DBPP) moieties linked through an octafluoroanthracene core. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations predict that electronic effects control either the first formation of spirocycles and subsequent Scholl reaction to form spironanographene 2, or the expected dehydrogenation reaction leading solely to the helical nanographene 3. The crystal structures of four of the new spiro compounds (syn 2, syn 9, anti 9 and syn 10) were solved by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The photophysical properties of the new molecular nanographene 3 reveal a remarkable dual fluorescent emission.

Stereoselective Chiral Molecular Carbon Imides Featuring 12-Fold [5]helicenes Around Four Cores

Despite the great progress in research on molecular carbons containing multiple helicenes around one core, realizing the stereoselectivity of carbons containing multiple helicenes around more cores is still a great challenge. Herein, molecular carbon C₂₀₄ featuring 12-fold [5]helicenes around four cores was successfully constructed by using nine perylene diimide (PDI) units, and exhibits good solubility and stability. Despite 256 possible stereoisomers caused by the 12-fold [5]helicenes, we only obtained one pair of enantiomers with D₃ symmetry. There are four possible pairs of enantiomers with D₃ symmetry, namely 7A, 7B, 7C and 7D. Theoretical and experimental results verify that the obtained structure belongs to 7C, which has the lowest energy. The enantiomers can also be separated by chiral HPLC. These results suggest that choosing PDIs as building blocks can not only improve the solubility and stability but also realize the stereoselectivity and chirality of molecular carbons.

Catalytic Enantioselective Synthesis of Helicenes

Helicenes and helicene-like molecules, usually containing multiple ortho-fused aromatic rings, possess unique helical chirality. These compounds have found a wide range of important applications in many research fields, such as asymmetric catalysis, molecular recognition, sensors and responsive switches, circularly polarized luminescence materials and others. However, the catalytic enantioselective synthesis of helicenes was largely underexplored, when compared with the enantioselective synthesis of molecules bearing other stereogenic elements (e.g. central chirality and axial chirality). Since the pioneer work of asymmetric synthesis of helicenes via enantioselective [2+2+2] cycloaddition of triynes by Stará and Starý, last two decades have witnessed the tremendous development in the catalytic enantioselective synthesis of helicenes. In this review, we comprehensively summarized the advances in this field, which include methods enabled by both transition metal catalysis and organocatalysis, and provide our perspective on its future development.

Electrochemical synthesis of heterodehydro[7]helicenes

Dehydrohelicenes are some of the most attractive chiroptical materials with unique helical chirality. However, to our knowledge, there are no prior reports on their direct construction by asymmetric methods. In this work, sequential synthesis of aza-oxa-dehydro[7]helicenes via the electrochemical oxidative hetero-coupling of 3-hydoxycarbazoles and 2-naphthols followed by dehydrative cyclization and intramolecular C-C bond formation has been realized. In addition, an efficient enantioselective synthesis through chiral vanadium-catalyzed hetero-coupling and electrochemical oxidative transformations afforded heterodehydro[7]helicene without any racemization. The obtained dehydro[7]helicenes showed intense blue-colored circularly polarized luminescence (|g_lum| ≈ 2.5 × 10^-3 at 433 nm). Thermodynamic and kinetic studies of the racemization barrier of heterodehydro[7]helicenes indicated significant chiral stability with ΔG^‡> 140 kJ mol^-1.

Multi-colour circularly polarized luminescence properties of chiral Schiff-base boron difluoride complexes

A series of chiral Schiff-base boron difluoride complexes was synthesized and their photophysical properties were examined. These complexes showed multi-colour (blue, yellow and red) photoluminescence in solution and in the solid state with good emission quantum yield (Φ) depending on the π-systems of the ligands. The chiral complexes exhibited circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with an absolute luminescence dissymmetry factor (g_lum) of up to the 1.3 × 10^-3 in solution and 1.9 × 10^-2 in the drop-cast film state. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD) DFT calculations were conducted to further understand the photophysical properties.

Enhancement of Chiroptical Responses of trans-Bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) Complexes with Distorted Square Planar Coordination Geometry

The relationship between the coordination geometry and photophysical properties of trans‐bis[(β‐iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) was investigated both experimentally and theoretically. A series of platinum(II) complexes with differently substituted iminomethyl groups were synthesized, and their photophysical properties were examined in solution, in the crystalline, and in the PMMA film‐dispersed state, respectively (PMMA=poly(methyl methacrylate)). These complexes showed structure‐dependent emission spectra, in which the color of the luminescence in the crystalline state varied over a range of about 40 nm depending on the specific bowl‐shaped molecular structure. The chiral complexes with (R,R)‐ and (S,S)‐configurations were found to have structure‐dependent chiroptical properties both in solution and the PMMA film‐dispersed state such that the intensity of circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) were enhanced with bulky cyclic substituents at the nitrogen atoms. A theoretical study using density functional theory (DFT) and time‐dependent (TD)‐DFT calculations revealed that the enhancement of chiroptical responses is due to the amplification of the magnetic dipole moment caused by the distortion of the square planar geometry.

One-Shot Synthesis of Expanded Heterohelicene Exhibiting Narrowband Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence

An expanded heterohelicene consisting of three BN₂-embedded [4]helicene subunits (V-DABNA-Mes) has been synthesized by one-shot triple borylation. The key to success is the excessive use of boron tribromide in an autoclave. Based on the multiple resonance effect of three boron and six nitrogen atoms, V-DABNA-Mes exhibited a narrowband sky-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence with a full width at half-maximum of 16 nm. The resonating π-extension minimized the singlet-triplet energy gap and enabled rapid reverse intersystem crossing with a rate constant of 4.4 × 10⁵ s^-1. The solution-processed organic light-emitting diode device, employed as an emitter, exhibited a narrowband emission at 480 nm with a high external quantum efficiency of 22.9%.

Infinitene: A Helically Twisted Figure-Eight [12]Circulene Topoisomer

New forms of molecular nanocarbon particularly looped polyarenes adopting various topologies contribute to the fundamental science and practical applications. Here we report the synthesis of an infinity-shaped polyarene, infinitene (1) (cyclo[c.c.c.c.c.c.e.e.e.e.e.e]dodecakisbenzene), comprising consecutively fused 12-benzene rings forming an enclosed loop with a strain energy of 60.2 kcal·mol^-1. Infinitene (1) represents a topoisomer of still-hypothetical [12]circulene, and its scaffold can be formally visualized as the outcome of the "stitching" of two homochiral [6]helicene subunits by both their ends. The synthetic strategy encompasses transformation of a rationally designed dithiacyclophane to cyclophadiene through the Stevens rearrangement and pyrolysis of the corresponding S,S'-bis(oxide) followed by the photocyclization. The structure of 1 is a unique hybrid of helicene and circulene with a molecular formula of C₄₈H₂₄, which can be regarded as an isomer for kekulene, [6,6]carbon nanobelt ([6,6]CNB), and [12]cyclacene. Infinitene (1) is a bench-stable yellow solid with green fluorescence and soluble to common organic solvents. Its figure-eight molecular structure was unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The scaffold of 1 is significantly compressed as manifested by a remarkably shortened distance (3.152-3.192 Å) between the centroids of two π-π stacked central benzene rings and the closest C···C distance of 2.920 Å. Fundamental photophysical properties of 1 were thoroughly elucidated by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic studies and density functional theory calculations. Its configurational stability enabled separation of the corresponding enantiomers (P,P) and (M,M) by a chiral HPLC. Circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) measurements revealed that 1 has moderate |g_CD| and |g_CPL| values.

Magnetic Circularly Polarized Luminescence in the Photoexcited States of Racemic [n]Helicenes (n=3-5,7) in Tetrahydrofuran and Dimethyl Sulfoxide Solutions

This paper reports the first magnetic circularly polarized luminescence (MCPL) characteristics of racemic helicenes, including four unsubstituted [n]helicenes (n=3,4,5,7) and two [4]helicene derivatives bearing methoxy substituents, in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solutions. The value of |g_MCPL | was calculated to be of the order of 10^-3  T^-1 within 350-430 nm under the north-up (N-up) and south-up (S-up) Faraday geometries in an external magnetic field of 1.6 T. The [n]-dependent MCPL signs were altered by the N-up and S-up geometries.

Phosphine-Catalyzed Aryne Oligomerization: Direct Access to α,ω-Bisfunctionalized Oligo(ortho-arylenes)

A phosphine-catalyzed oligomerization of arynes using selenocyanates was developed. The use of JohnPhos as a bulky phosphine is the key to accessing α,ω-bisfunctionalized oligo(ortho-arylenes) with RSe as the substituent at one terminus and CN as the substituent at the other. The in situ formation of R₃PSeR' cations, serving as sterically encumbered electrophiles, hinders the immediate reaction that affords the 1,2-bisfunctionalization product and instead opens a competitive pathway leading to oligomerization. Various optimized conditions for the predominant formation of dimers, but also for higher oligomers such as trimers and tetramers, were developed. Depending on the electronic properties of the electrophilic reaction partner, even compounds up to octamers were isolated. Optimization experiments revealed that a properly tuned phosphine as catalyst is of crucial importance. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that the cascade starts with the attack of cyanide; aryne insertion into n-mers leading to (n+1)-mers was ruled out.

Sulfurane [S(IV)]-Mediated Fusion of Benzynes Leads to Helical Dibenzofurans

Here we disclose a sulfurane-mediated method for the formation of dimeric dibenzofuran helicenes via the reaction between diaryl sulfoxides and hexadehydro-Diels-Alder (HDDA) derived benzynes. A variety of S-shaped and U-shaped helicenes were formed under thermal conditions. Both experimental and DFT studies support a sulfur(IV)-based coupling (aka ligand coupling) mechanism involving tetracarbo-ligated S(IV) intermediates undergoing reductive elimination to afford the helicene products. This process involves the de novo generation of five new rings in a single operation and constitutes a new method for the construction of topologically interesting, polycyclic aromatic compounds.

Leveraging Fleeting Strained Intermediates to Access Complex Scaffolds

Arynes, strained cyclic alkynes, and strained cyclic allenes were validated as plausible intermediates in the 1950s and 1960s. Despite initially being considered mere scientific curiosities, these transient and highly reactive species have now become valuable synthetic building blocks. This Perspective highlights recent advances in the field that have allowed access to structural and stereochemical complexity, including recent breakthroughs in asymmetric catalysis.

In-Fjord Substitution in Expanded Helicenes: Effects of the Insert on the Inversion Barrier and Helical Pitch

A series of expanded helicenes of different sizes and shapes incorporating phenyl- and biphenyl-substituents at the deepest part of their fjord have been synthesized via sequential Au-catalyzed hydroarylation of appropriately designed diynes, and their racemization barriers have been calculated employing electronic structure methods. These show that the overall profile of the inversions (energies, number of transition states and intermediates, and their relative position) is intensively affected by the interplay of steric and attractive London dispersion interactions. Hence, in-fjord substitution constitutes an additional tool to handle the mechanical properties in helicenes of uncommonly large diameter. The photochemical characterization of the newly prepared helical structures is also reported.

Organocatalytic Enantioselective Construction of Chiral Azepine Skeleton Bearing Multiple-Stereogenic Elements

Enantioselective construction of molecules bearing multiple stereogenic elements is increasingly related to the synthesis of enantiopure natural products, pharmaceuticals, and functional materials. However, atom-economical and enantioselective approaches to install multiple stereogenic elements in a small molecular template by limited chemical transformation remain challenging. We describe an organocatalytic enantioselective method for the preparation of polychiral molecules bearing four types of stereogenic elements in fused azepines via vinylidene ortho-quinone methide (VQM)-mediated intramolecular electrophilic aromatic substitution. This method was proved robust with a wide range of substrate scope (46-92 % yield), with excellent diastereoselectivity (>20:1 dr) and enantioselectivity achieved (up to 97 % ee). Optical properties and Ru³⁺ -induced fluorescence responses of these compounds suggest their potential applications in optoelectronic materials and heavy metal ion detection.

Transformation from triple helicene to double helicene embedding adjacent stereogenic carbon atoms and axial stereogenicity

Transformation of triple helicene (TH) to double helicene (DH) with adjacent stereogenic carbon atoms and axial stereogenicity was achieved by the unexpected conjugate addition to the central aromatic ring of TH-1. We also studied the boundary at which different reactivities to addition reactions occur in some helicenes with different π-extension.

One-Step Simultaneous Synthesis of Circularly Polarized Luminescent Multiple Helicenes Using a Chrysene Framework

A series of multiple helicenes was simultaneously synthesized in one step by intramolecular cyclization of a single chrysene derivative containing two 2-[(4-alkoxyphenyl)ethynyl]phenyl units accompanied by rearrangements of the aryl pendants. The electrophile-induced double cyclization with or without aryl migrations proceeded efficiently under acidic conditions to afford annulative π-extension of the chrysene units and produced quadruple (QH-2), triple (TH-2), and double (DH-2) helicenes containing [4]- and/or [5]helicene frameworks with dynamic and/or static helicene chirality in one step. Three multiple helicenes' structures were determined by X-ray crystallography and/or density functional theory calculations. The multiple TH-2 and DH-2 helicenes were separated into enantiomers because of the stable one and two [5]helicene moieties, respectively, and showed intense circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence. Although QH-2, which comprises four [4]helicene subunits, was not resolved into enantiomers, the TH-2 enantiomers were further separated into a pair of diastereomers at low temperature resulting from their substituted [4]helicene chirality.

Double π-Extended Undecabenzo[7]helicene

This work reports the first double π-extended undecabenzo[7]helicene 1, which is a large chiral nanographene, composed of 65 fused rings and 186 conjugated carbon atoms. The molecular identity of 1 has been confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. A wine coloured solution of 1 in dichloromethane absorbs light from ultraviolet to the near infrared, featuring an extremely large molar absorption coefficient of 844 000 M^-1  cm^-1 at 573 nm. Optically pure 1 shows a record high electronic circular dichroism intensity in the visible spectral range (|Δϵ|=1375 M^-1  cm^-1 at 430 nm) known for any discrete polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. These unusual photophysical properties of 1 contrast sharply with those of a mono-undecabenzo[7]helicene derivative 2.

C2- and C1-Symmetric Configurationally Stable Pyrene-Fused [5]Helicenes Connected via Hexagonal and Heptagonal Rings

In this paper, we describe the stereospecific synthesis and functional properties of C₂- and C₁-symmetric pyrene-fused [5]helicene molecules 1 and 2 connected via hexagonal and heptagonal rings, respectively. Both molecules showed high configurational stability and distinct functional properties, which were attributed to the fusing mode of [5]helicene with the pyrene and molecular symmetry. The estimated Gibbs activation energy for enantiomerization of 2 is one of the highest reported values for any π-conjugated molecules incorporating [5]helicene moiety.

Metal-free dearomative [5+2]/[2+2] cycloaddition of 1H-indoles with ortho-(trimethylsilyl)aryl triflates

Herein, we report a mild dearomative [5+2]/[2+2] cycloaddition of 1H-indoles with ortho-(trimethylsilyl)aryl triflates. The unique [5+2] cycloaddition enables the synthesis of a series of dibenzo[b,e]azepine derivatives in moderate to good yields. Increasing the steric hindrance at the C2-position of 1H-indoles leads to the [2+2] cycloaddition. Mechanistic investigations support that the reaction of 1H-indoles with arynes undergoes a [2+2] cycloaddition step, followed by a ring expansion to the [5+2] cycloaddition product.

Enantioselective Synthesis of 1-Aryl Benzo[5]helicenes Using BINOL-Derived Cationic Phosphonites as Ancillary Ligands

The synthesis of unprecedented BINOL-derived cationic phosphonites is described. Through the use of these phosphanes as ancillary ligands in AuI catalysis, a highly regio- and enantioselective assembly of appropriately designed alkynes into 1-(aryl)benzo[5]carbohelicenes is achieved. The modular synthesis of these ligands and the enhanced reactivity that they impart to AuI -centers after coordination have been found to be the key features that allow an optimization of the reaction conditions until the desired benzo[5]helicenes are obtained with high yield and enantioselectivity.

Enantiospecific Generation and Trapping Reactions of Aryne Atropisomers

Enantioenriched aryne atropisomers having a biaryl stereogenic axis vicinal to the reactive triple bond are demonstrated to exist. These reaction intermediates are easily produced in situ and can undergo the standard aryne cycloaddition chemistry in an enantiospecific manner. Notably, the aryne atropisomers herein have allowed the practical syntheses of a small nanographene as well as some triptycene and anthracene derivatives that embed stereogenic axes of controlled absolute configurations.
