Extension of Surface Organometallic Chemistry to Metal–Organic Frameworks: Development of a Well-Defined Single Site [(≡Zr–O−)W(═O)(CH2tBu)3] Olefin Metathesis Catalyst

Metalation of metal-organic frameworks: fundamentals and applications

Metalation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been developed as a prominent strategy for materials functionalization for pore chemistry modulation and property optimization. By introducing exotic metal ions/complexes/nanoparticles onto/into the parent framework, many metallized MOFs have exhibited significantly improved performance in a wide range of applications. In this review, we focus on the research progress in the metalation of metal-organic frameworks during the last five years, spanning the design principles, synthetic strategies, and potential applications. Based on the crystal engineering principles, a minor change in the MOF composition through metalation would lead to leveraged variation of properties. This review starts from the general strategies established for the incorporation of metal species within MOFs, followed by the design principles to graft the desired functionality while maintaining the porosity of frameworks. Facile metalation has contributed a great number of bespoke materials with excellent performance, and we summarize their applications in gas adsorption and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, detection and sensing, and energy storage and conversion. The underlying mechanisms are also investigated by state-of-the-art techniques and analyzed for gaining insight into the structure-property relationships, which would in turn facilitate the further development of design principles. Finally, the current challenges and opportunities in MOF metalation have been discussed, and the promising future directions for customizing the next-generation advanced materials have been outlined as well.

Atomic-level imaging of beam-sensitive COFs and MOFs by low-dose electron microscopy

Electron microscopy, an important technique that allows for the precise determination of structural information with high spatiotemporal resolution, has become indispensable in unravelling the complex relationships between material structure and properties ranging from mesoscale morphology to atomic arrangement. However, beam-sensitive materials, particularly those comprising organic components such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), would suffer catastrophic damage from the high energy electrons, hindering the determination of atomic structures. A low-dose approach has arisen as a possible solution to this problem based on the integration of advancements in several aspects: electron optical system, detector, image processing, and specimen preservation. This article summarizes the transmission electron microscopy characterization of MOFs and COFs, including local structures, host-guest interactions, and interfaces at the atomic level. Revolutions in advanced direct electron detectors, algorithms in image acquisition and processing, and emerging methodology for high quality low-dose imaging are also reviewed. Finally, perspectives on the future development of electron microscopy methodology with the support of computer science are presented.

Design and Advanced Manufacturing of NU-1000 Metal-Organic Frameworks with Future Perspectives for Environmental and Renewable Energy Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a relatively new family of materials that attract lots of attention thanks to their unique features such as hierarchical porosity, active metal centers, versatility of linkers/metal nodes, and large surface area. Among the extended list of MOFs, Zr-based-MOFs demonstrate comparably superior chemical and thermal stabilities, making them ideal candidates for energy and environmental applications. As a Zr-MOF, NU-1000 is first synthesized at Northwestern University. A comprehensive review of various approaches to the synthesis of NU-1000 MOFs for obtaining unique surface properties (e.g., diverse surface morphologies, large surface area, and particular pore size distribution) and their applications in the catalysis (electro-, and photo-catalysis), CO2 reduction, batteries, hydrogen storage, gas storage/separation, and other environmental fields are presented. The review further outlines the current challenges in the development of NU-1000 MOFs and their derivatives in practical applications, revealing areas for future investigation.

Research Progress on Metal-Organic Frameworks by Advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), composed of metal nodes and inorganic linkers, are promising for a wide range of applications due to their unique periodic frameworks. Understanding structure-activity relationships can facilitate the development of new MOFs. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a powerful technique to characterize the microstructures of MOFs at the atomic scale. In addition, it is possible to directly visualize the microstructural evolution of MOFs in real time under working conditions via in situ TEM setups. Although MOFs are sensitive to high-energy electron beams, much progress has been made due to the development of advanced TEM. In this review, we first introduce the main damage mechanisms for MOFs under electron-beam irradiation and two strategies to minimize these damages: low-dose TEM and cryo-TEM. Then we discuss three typical techniques to analyze the microstructure of MOFs, including three-dimensional electron diffraction, imaging using direct-detection electron-counting cameras, and iDPC-STEM. Groundbreaking milestones and research advances of MOFs structures obtained with these techniques are highlighted. In situ TEM studies are reviewed to provide insights into the dynamics of MOFs induced by various stimuli. Additionally, perspectives are analyzed for promising TEM techniques in the research of MOFs' structures.

Expanding the Knowledge of the Selective-Sensing Mechanism of Nitro Compounds by Luminescent Terbium Metal-Organic Frameworks through Multiconfigurational ab Initio Calculations

The current research shows that the excited-state dynamics of the antenna ligand, both in the interacting system sensor/analyte and in the sensor without analyte, is a safe tool for elucidating the detection principle of the luminescent lanthanide-based metal-organic framework sensors. In this report the detection principle of the luminescence quenching mechanism in two Tb-based MOFs sensors is elucidated. The first system is a luminescent Tb-MOF [Tb(BTTA)_1.5(H₂O)_4.5]_n (H₂BTTA = 2,5-bis(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl) terephthalic acid) selective to nitrobenzene (NB), labeled as Tb-1. The second system is {[Tb(DPYT)(BPDC)_1/2(NO₃)]·H₂O}_n (DPYT = 2,5-di(pyridin-4-yl) terephthalic acid, BPDC = biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid), reported as a selective chemical sensor to nitromethane (NM) in situ, labeled as Tb-2. The luminescence quenching of the MOFs is promoted by intermolecular interactions with the analytes that induce destabilization of the T₁ electronic state of the linker "antenna", altering thus the sensitization pathways of the Tb atoms. This study demonstrates the value of host-guest interaction simulations and the rate constants of the radiative and nonradiative processes in understanding and elucidating the sensing mechanism in Ln-MOF sensors.

Construction and application of base-stable MOFs: a critical review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of porous crystalline materials constructed from organic ligands and metal ions/clusters. Owing to their unique advantages, they have attracted more and more attention in recent years and numerous studies have revealed their great potential in various applications. Many important applications of MOFs inevitably involve harsh alkaline operational environments. To achieve high performance and long cycling life in these applications, high stability of MOFs against bases is necessary. Therefore, the construction of base-stable MOFs has become a critical research direction in the MOF field. This review gives a historic summary of the development of base-stable MOFs in the last few years. The key factors that can determine the robustness of MOFs under basic conditions are analyzed. We also demonstrate the exciting achievements that have been made by utilizing base-stable MOFs in different applications. In the end, we discuss major challenges for the further development of base-stable MOFs. Some possible methods to address these problems are presented.

Energy Transfer in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Fluorescence Sensing

The development of materials with outstanding performance for sensitive and selective detection of multiple analytes is essential for the development of human health and society. Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) have controllable surface and pore sizes and excellent optical properties. Therefore, a variety of LMOF-based sensors with diverse detection functions can be easily designed and applied. Furthermore, the introduction of energy transfer (ET) into LMOFs (ET-LMOFs) could provide a richer design concept and a much more sensitive and accurate sensing performance. In this review, we focus on the recent five years of advances in ET-LMOF-based sensing materials, with an emphasis on photochemical and photophysical mechanisms. We discuss in detail possible energy transfer processes within a MOF structure or between MOFs and guest materials. Finally, the possible sensing applications of the ET-LMOF-based sensors are highlighted.

Modulating Chemical Environments of Metal-Organic Framework-Supported Molybdenum(VI) Catalysts for Insights into the Structure-Activity Relationship in Cyclohexene Epoxidation

Solid supports are crucial in heterogeneous catalysis due to their profound effects on catalytic activity and selectivity. However, elucidating the specific effects arising from such supports remains challenging. We selected a series of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with 8-connected Zr₆ nodes as supports to deposit molybdenum(VI) onto to study the effects of pore environment and topology on the resulting Mo-supported catalysts. As characterized by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), we modulated the chemical environments of the deposited Mo species. For Mo-NU-1000, the Mo species monodentately bound to the Zr₆ nodes were anchored in the microporous c-pore, but for Mo-NU-1008 they were bound in the mesopore of Mo-NU-1008. Both monodentate and bidentate modes were found in the mesopore of Mo-NU-1200. Cyclohexene epoxidation with H₂O₂ was probed to evaluate the support effect on catalytic activity and to unveil the resulting structure-activity relationships. SCXRD and XAS studies demonstrated the atomically precise structural differences of the Mo binding motifs over the course of cyclohexene epoxidation. No apparent structural change was observed for Mo-NU-1000, whereas the monodentate mode of Mo species in Mo-NU-1008 and the monodentate and bidentate Mo species in Mo-NU-1200 evolved to a new bidentate mode bound between two adjacent oxygen atoms from the Zr₆ node. This work demonstrates the great advantage of using MOF supports for constructing heterogeneous catalysts with modulated chemical environments of an active species and elucidating structure-activity relationships in the resulting reactions.

MOF-enabled confinement and related effects for chemical catalyst presentation and utilization

A defining characteristic of nearly all catalytically functional MOFs is uniform, molecular-scale porosity. MOF pores, linkers and nodes that define them, help regulate reactant and product transport, catalyst siting, catalyst accessibility, catalyst stability, catalyst activity, co-catalyst proximity, composition of the chemical environment at and beyond the catalytic active site, chemical intermediate and transition-state conformations, thermodynamic affinity of molecular guests for MOF interior sites, framework charge and density of charge-compensating ions, pore hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity, pore and channel rigidity vs. flexibility, and other features and properties. Collectively and individually, these properties help define overall catalyst functional behaviour. This review focuses on how porous, catalyst-containing MOFs capitalize on molecular-scale confinement, containment, isolation, environment modulation, energy delivery, and mobility to accomplish desired chemical transformations with potentially superior selectivity or other efficacy, especially in comparison to catalysts in homogeneous solution environments.

Thermochemical Investigation of Oxyanion Coordination in a Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Framework

Porous materials possess high internal surface areas and void fractions that make them valuable in several applications, including gas storage, heterogeneous catalysis, and water purification. Despite the plentiful effort allocated to porous materials research annually, few methods exist to directly monitor and characterize chemical events occurring within a pore's confines. The crystalline nature of zeolites, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) permit structural characterization by X-ray diffraction; yet, quantifying the thermodynamics of chemical processes and transformations remains tedious and error ridden. Herein, we employ isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) to determine the full thermodynamic profile of oxyanion adsorption in a zirconium-based MOF, NU-1000. To further validate this method, which we recently introduced to the field, we replicated ITC experiments as bulk adsorption measurements to demonstrate the correlation between the extracted stoichiometric parameter from ITC thermograms and the MOF uptake capacity. Moreover, based on the calculated association constants, we accurately predicted which analytes might be able to displace others. For example, dihydrogen phosphate can displace selenate and sulfate because of its higher association constant (ΔGphosphate = -5.41 kcal/mol; ΔGselenate = -4.98 kcal/mol; ΔGsulfate = -4.77 kcal/mol). We monitored the exchange processes by titrating oxyanion-functionalized MOF samples with a more strongly binding analyte.

Selective cyclohexene oxidation to allylic compounds over a Cu-triazole framework via homolytic activation of hydrogen peroxide

Utilization of metal-organic frameworks as heterogeneous catalysts is crucial owing to their abundant catalytic sites and well-defined porous structures. Highly robust [Cu3(trz)3(μ3-OH)(OH)2(H2O)4]·2H2O (trz = 1,2,4-triazole) was employed as a catalyst for liquid-phase cyclohexene oxidation with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Possessing the porous structure together with Lewis acid attributes from the triangular [Cu3(trz)3(μ3-OH)] center, selective oxidation of cyclohexene to allylic products gives a molar yield of 31% with 87% selectivity. According to the highly selective allylic production, the reaction over the present Cu-MOF plausibly occurs via homolytic activation of H2O2. This finding elucidates the unique features of the MOF for efficient catalysis of cyclohexene oxidation.

Metal–Organic Frameworks as Versatile Platforms for Organometallic Chemistry

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging porous materials with highly tunable structures developed in the 1990s, while organometallic chemistry is of fundamental importance for catalytic transformation in the academic and industrial world for many decades. Through the years, organometallic chemistry has been incorporated into functional MOF construction for diverse applications. Here, we will focus on how organometallic chemistry is applied in MOF design and modifications from linker-centric and metal-cluster-centric perspectives, respectively. Through structural design, MOFs can function as a tailorable platform for traditional organometallic transformations, including reaction of alkenes, cross-coupling reactions, and C–H activations. Besides, an overview will be made on other application categories of organometallic MOFs, such as gas adsorption, magnetism, quantum computing, and therapeutics.

Single-Crystalline Ultrathin 2D Porous Nanosheets of Chiral Metal-Organic Frameworks

Two-dimensional (2D) materials with highly ordered in-plane nanopores are crucial for numerous applications, but their rational synthesis and local structural characterization remain two grand challenges. We illustrate here that single-crystalline ultrathin 2D MOF nanosheets (MONs) with intrinsic porosity can be prepared by exfoliating layered metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), whose layers are stabilized by sterically bulky groups. As a result, three three-dimensional (3D) isostructural lanthanide MOFs possessing porous layer structures are constructed by coordinating metal ions with an angular dicarboxylate linker derived from chiral 1,1'-biphenyl phosphoric acid with pendant mesityl groups. The Eu-MOF is readily ultrasonic exfoliated into single-crystalline nanosheets with a thickness of ca. 6.0 nm (2 layers) and a lateral size of 1.5 × 3.0 μm². The detailed structural information, i.e., the pore channels and individual organic and inorganic building units in the framework, is clearly visualized by a low-dose high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) technique. Benefiting from their ultrathin feature, the nanosheets are well embedded into the polymer matrix to form free-standing mixed-matrix membranes. In both the solution and membrane phase, the fluorescence of the MONs can be effectively quenched by a total of 17 chiral terpenes and terpenoids through supramolecular interactions with uncoordinated chiral phosphoric acids, leading to a chiral optical sensor for detecting vapor enantiomers, which is among the most challenging molecular recognition tasks.
