The Valence-Dependent Activity of Colloidal Molecules as Ice Recrystallization Inhibitors

Inspired by advances in cryopreservation techniques, which are essential for modern biomedical applications, there is a special interest in the ice recrystallization inhibition (IRI) of the antifreeze protein (AFPs) mimics. There are in-depth studies on synthetic materials mimicking AFPs, from simple molecular structure levels to complex self-assemblies. Herein, we report the valence-dependent IRI activity of colloidal organic molecules (CMs). The CMs were prepared through polymerization-induced particle-assembly (PIPA) of the ABC-type triblock terpolymer of poly(acryloxyethyl trimethylammonium chloride)-b-poly(benzyl acrylate)-b-poly(diacetone acrylamide) (PATAC-b-PBzA-b-PDAAM) at high monomer conversions. Stabilized by the cationic block of PATAC, the strong intermolecular H-bonding and incompatibility of the PDAAM block with PBzA contributed to the in situ formation of Janus particles (AX1) beyond the initial spherical seed particles (AX0), as well as the high valency clusters of linear AX2 and trigonal AX3. Their distribution was controlled mainly by the polymerization degrees (DPs) of PATAC and PDAAM blocks. IRI activity results of the CMs suggest that the higher fraction of AX1 results in the better IRI activity. Increasing the fraction of AX1 from 27% to 65% led to a decrease of the mean grain size from 39.8% to 10.9% and a depressed growth rate of ice crystals by 58%. Moreover, by replacing the PDAAM block with the temperature-responsive one of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), temperature-adjustable IRI activity was observed, which is well related to the reversible transition of AX0 to AX1, providing a new idea for the molecular design of amphiphilic polymer nanoparticle-based IRI activity materials.

Spearheading a new era in complex colloid synthesis with TPM and other silanes

Colloid science has recently grown substantially owing to the innovative use of silane coupling agents (SCAs), especially 3-trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate (TPM). SCAs were previously used mainly as modifying agents, but their ability to form droplets and condense onto pre-existing structures has enabled their use as a versatile and powerful tool to create novel anisotropic colloids with increasing complexity. In this Review, we highlight the advances in complex colloid synthesis facilitated by the use of TPM and show how this has driven remarkable new applications. The focus is on TPM as the current state-of-the-art in colloid science, but we also discuss other silanes and their potential to make an impact. We outline the remarkable properties of TPM colloids and their synthesis strategies, and discuss areas of soft matter science that have benefited from TPM and other SCAs.

Depletion-induced crystallization of anisotropic triblock colloids

The intricate interplay between colloidal particle shape and precisely engineered interaction potentials has paved the way for the discovery of unprecedented crystal structures in both two and three dimensions. Here, we make use of anisotropic triblock colloidal particles composed of two distinct materials. The resulting surface charge heterogeneity can be exploited to generate regioselective depletion interactions and directional bonding. Using extensive molecular dynamics simulations and a dimensionality reduction analysis approach, we map out state diagrams for the self-assembly of such colloids as a function of their aspect ratio and for varying depletant features in a quasi two-dimensional set-up. We observe the formation of a wide variety of crystal structures such as a herringbone, brick-wall, tilted brick-wall, and (tilted) ladder-like structures. More specifically, we determine the optimal parameters to enhance crystallization, and investigate the nucleation process. Additionally, we explore the potential of using crystalline monolayers as templates for deposition, thereby creating complex three-dimensional structures that hold promise for future applications.

Self-Assembly in an Experimentally Realistic Model of Lobed Patchy Colloids

Colloids with lobed architectures have been shown to self-assemble into promising porous structures with potential biomedical applications. The synthesis of these colloids via experiments can be tuned to vary the number and the position of the lobes. However, the polydispersity involving the numbers, sizes, and the dispositions of lobes, that is often observed in particle designs, can significantly affect their self-assembled structures. In this work, we go beyond the uniform lobe size conditions commonly considered in molecular simulations, and probe the effect of polydispersity due to non-uniform lobe sizes by studying self-assembly in three experimentally observable designs of lobed particles (dumbbell, two lobes; trigonal planar, three lobes; and tetrahedral, four lobes), using coarse-grained Langevin dynamics simulations in the NVT ensemble. With increasing polydispersity, we observed the formation of a crystalline structure from a disordered state for the dumbbell system, and a loss of order in the crystalline structures for the trigonal planar system. The tetrahedral system retained a crystalline structure with only a minor loss in compactness. We observed that the effect of polydispersity on the self-assembled morphology of a given system can be minimized by increasing the number of lobes. The polydispersity in the lobe size may also be useful in tuning self-assemblies toward desired structures.

Janus particles with tunable patch symmetry and their assembly into chiral colloidal clusters

Janus particles, which have an attractive patch on the otherwise repulsive surface, have been commonly employed for anisotropic colloidal assembly. While current methods of particle synthesis allow for control over the patch size, they are generally limited to producing dome-shaped patches with a high symmetry (C∞). Here, we report on the synthesis of Janus particles with patches of various tunable shapes, having reduced symmetries ranging from C2v to C3v and C4v. The Janus particles are synthesized by partial encapsulation of an octahedral metal-organic framework particle (UiO-66) in a polymer matrix. The extent of encapsulation is precisely regulated by a stepwise, asymmetric dewetting process that exposes selected facets of the UiO-66 particle. With depletion interaction, the Janus particles spontaneously assemble into colloidal clusters reflecting the particles' shapes and patch symmetries. We observe the formation of chiral structures, whereby chirality emerges from achiral building blocks. With the ability to encode symmetry and directional bonding information, our strategy could give access to more complex colloidal superstructures through assembly.

Synthesis of dimpled polymer particles and polymer particles with protrusions - Past, present, and future

Since the development of emulsion polymerization techniques, polymer particles have become the epitome of standard colloids due to the exceptional control over size, size distribution, and composition the synthesis methods allow reaching. The exploration of different variations of the synthesis methods has led to the discovery of more advanced techniques, enabling control over their composition and shape. Many early investigations focused on forming particles with protrusions (with one protrusion, called dumbbell particles) and particles with concavities, also called dimpled particles. This paper reviews the literature covering the synthesis, functionalization, and applications of both types of particles. The focus has been on the rationalization of the various approaches used to prepare such particles and on the discussion of the mechanisms of formation not just from the experimental viewpoint but also from the standpoint of thermodynamics. The primary motivation to combine in a single review the preparation of both types of particles has been the observation of similarities among some of the methods developed to prepare dimpled particles, which sometimes include the formation of particles with protrusions and vice versa. The most common applications of these particles have been discussed as well. By looking at the different approaches developed in the literature under one general perspective, we hope to stimulate a more ample use of these particles and promote the development of even more effective synthetic protocols.

Synthetic strategies for nonporous organosilica nanoparticles from organosilanes

Organosilica nanoparticles refer to silica nanoparticles containing carbon along with organic or functional groups and can be divided into mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles and nonporous organosilica nanoparticles. During the past few decades, considerable efforts have been devoted to the development of organosilica nanoparticles directly from organosilanes. However, most of the reports have focused on mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles, while relatively few are concerned with nonporous organosilica nanoparticles. The synthesis of nonporous organosilica nanoparticles typically involves (i) self-condensation of an organosilane as the single source, (ii) co-condensation of two or more types of organosilanes, (iii) co-condensation of tetraalkoxysilane and an organosilane, and (iv) spontaneous emulsification and the subsequent radical polymerization of 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TPM). This article aims to provide a review on the synthetic strategies of this important type of colloidal particle, followed by a brief discussion on their applications and future perspectives.

Molecular Engineering of Colloidal Atoms

Creation of architectures with exquisite hierarchies actuates the germination of revolutionized functions and applications across a wide range of fields. Hierarchical self-assembly of colloidal particles holds the promise for materialized realization of structural programing and customizing. This review outlines the general approaches to organize atom-like micro- and nanoparticles into prescribed colloidal analogs of molecules by exploiting diverse interparticle driving motifs involving confining templates, interactive surface ligands, and flexible shape/surface anisotropy. Furthermore, the self-regulated/adaptive co-assembly of simple unvarnished building blocks is discussed to inspire new designs of colloidal assembly strategies.

Advances in Colloidal Building Blocks: Toward Patchy Colloidal Clusters

The scalable synthetic route to colloidal atoms has significantly advanced over the past two decades. Recently, colloidal clusters with DNA-coated cores called "patchy colloidal clusters" have been developed, providing a directional bonding with specific angle of rotation due to the shape complementarity between colloidal clusters. Through a DNA-mediated interlocking process, they are directly assembled into low-coordination colloidal structures, such as cubic diamond lattices. Herein, the significant progress in recent years in the synthesis of patchy colloidal clusters and their assembly in experiments and simulations is reviewed. Furthermore, an outlook is given on the emerging approaches to the patchy colloidal clusters and their potential applications in photonic crystals, metamaterials, topological photonic insulators, and separation membranes.

Optically active polymer particles with programmable surface microstructures constructed using chiral helical polyacetylene

Micro/nanoparticles with surface microstructures have attracted tremendous attention due to their fascinating structures and properties. Herein, we present the first strategy for producing optically active polymer particles with varying surface microstructures via a template surface modification process in which achiral particles act as the template and helical substituted polyacetylene acts as the chiral component. To prepare the designed chiral-functionalized particles, template particles were first reacted with propargylamine to produce alkynylated template particles. The alkynylated templates further participated in the polymerization of chiral alkyne monomers through a surface grafting precipitation polymerization approach, resulting in achiral particles with surface microstructures covalently bonded with a chiral helical polymer. SEM images ascertain the production of chiral-functionalized particles showing various shapes (jar-like, golf ball-like, and raspberry-like particles). Furthermore, CD and UV-vis absorption spectra demonstrate that the grafted polyacetylene chains adopt a predominantly single-handed helical conformation, thereby affording composite particles with optical activity. Using the established protocol, numerous advanced chiral-functionalized micro/nanostructures are expected to be designed and constructed.

Customized metallodielectric colloids and their behavior in dielectrophoretic fields

A synthetic strategy for fabricating colloidal particles with spatially segregated amine-functionalized lobes enables regioselective coating with gold to afford metallodielectric particles with a variety of shapes and lobe sizes. This approach can produce either dissymmetric dumbbell-shaped two-lobed Au-TPM particles (Au-T) or dissymmetric or symmetric three-lobed particles with gold coating on one (Au-T-T and T-Au-T) or two lobes (Au-T-Au). Dielectrophoretic (DEP) forces exerted by an AC field confined between two opposing electrodes generate aggregates ranging from 1D chains to 2D close-packed lattices, depending on the particle shape and lobe arrangement. The aggregate structures reflect the lowest energy configurations resulting from the induced dipole moments created in particle lobes within the confined electric field.

Six-Pointed Star Chiral Cobalt Superstructures with Strong Antibacterial Activity

Chiral inorganic nanomaterials have shown promise as a potential means of combating bacteria due to their high levels of biocompatibility, easy surface modification, and excellent optical properties. In this study, a diverse range of chiral hierarchical nanomaterials are prepared from Co²⁺ and L/D-Tartaric acid (Tar) ligands. By combining the ligands in different ratios, chiral Co superstructures (Co SS) are obtained with different morphologies, including chiral nanoflowers, chiral nanohanamaki, a chiral six-pointed star, a chiral fan shape, and a chiral fusiform shape. It is found that the chiral six-pointed star structures exhibit chiroptical activity across a broad range of wavelengths from 300 to 1300 nm and that the g-factor is as high as 0.033 with superparamagnetic properties. Under the action of electromagnetic fields, the chiral six-pointed star Co SS shows excellent killing ability against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923). Compared to L-Co SS, D-Co SS shows stronger levels of antibacterial ability. It is found that the levels of reactive oxygen species generated by D-Co SS are 1.59-fold higher than L-Co SS which is attributed to chiral-induced spin selectivity effects. These findings are of significance for the further development of chiral materials with antibacterial properties.

Preparation of asymmetric particles by controlling the phase separation of seeded emulsion polymerization with ethanol/water mixture

Alcohols are discovered for the first time to tune the morphology of poly(vinyl benzyl chloride)-poly(3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane) (PVBC-PMPS) composite particles through seeded emulsion polymerization within the alcohol/water mixture. Here, monodispersed linear PVBC particles was synthesized through the dispersion polymerization and employed as the seeds. The as-obtained PVBC-PMPS composite particles could be dramatically tuned from core-shell structures to snowman-like particles, to dumbbell-shaped particles, to inverse snowman-like particles when the ethanol content in reaction mixtures is only adjusted within a narrow range. The morphology of fresh PMPS bulges was observed after removing the linear PVBC seeds with N,N'-dimethyl formamide, and their formation mechanism was studied by monitoring the free radical polymerization and sol-gel process of 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane. It has been confirmed that the sol-gel kinetics were the main factor on the particles' morphology. In addition, morphologies of PVBC-PMPS particles were also varied by the MPS feeding amount, types of the co-solvent and pH values of alcohol/water mixtures.

1D Colloidal chains: recent progress from formation to emergent properties and applications

Integrating nanoscale building blocks of low dimensionality (0D; i.e., spheres) into higher dimensional structures endows them and their corresponding materials with emergent properties non-existent or only weakly existent in the individual building blocks. Constructing 1D chains, 2D arrays and 3D superlattices using nanoparticles and colloids therefore continues to be one of the grand goals in colloid and nanomaterial science. Amongst these higher order structures, 1D colloidal chains are of particular interest, as they possess unique anisotropic properties. In recent years, the most relevant advances in 1D colloidal chain research have been made in novel synthetic methodologies and applications. In this review, we first address a comprehensive description of the research progress concerning various synthetic strategies developed to construct 1D colloidal chains. Following this, we highlight the amplified and emergent properties of the resulting materials, originating from the assembly of the individual building blocks and their collective behavior, and discuss relevant applications in advanced materials. In the discussion of synthetic strategies, properties, and applications, particular attention will be paid to overarching concepts, fresh trends, and potential areas of future research. We believe that this comprehensive review will be a driver to guide the interdisciplinary field of 1D colloidal chains, where nanomaterial synthesis, self-assembly, physical property studies, and material applications meet, to a higher level, and open up new research opportunities at the interface of classical disciplines.

Shape-Changing Particles: From Materials Design and Mechanisms to Implementation

Demands for next-generation soft and responsive materials have sparked recent interest in the development of shape-changing particles and particle assemblies. Over the last two decades, a variety of mechanisms that drive shape change have been explored and integrated into particulate systems. Through a combination of top-down fabrication and bottom-up synthesis techniques, shape-morphing capabilities extend from the microscale to the nanoscale. Consequently, shape-morphing particles are rapidly emerging in a variety of contexts, including photonics, microfluidics, microrobotics, and biomedicine. Herein, the key mechanisms and materials that facilitate shape changes of microscale and nanoscale particles are discussed. Recent progress in the applications made possible by these particles is summarized, and perspectives on their promise and key open challenges in the field are discussed.

Patchy Colloidal Clusters with Broken Symmetry

Colloidal clusters are prepared by assembling positively charged cross-linked polystyrene (PS) particles onto negatively charged liquid cores of swollen polymer particles. PS particles at the interface of the liquid core are closely packed around the core due to interfacial wetting. Then, by evaporating solvent in the liquid cores, polymers in the cores are solidified and the clusters are cemented. As the swelling ratio of PS cores increases, cores at the center of colloidal clusters are exposed, forming patchy colloidal clusters. Finally, by density gradient centrifugation, high-purity symmetric colloidal clusters are obtained. When silica-PS core-shell particles are swollen and serve as the liquid cores, hybrid colloidal clusters are obtained in which each silica nanoparticle is relocated to the liquid core interface during the swelling-deswelling process breaking symmetry in colloidal clusters as the silica nanoparticle in the core is comparable in size with the PS particle in the shell. The configuration of colloidal clusters is determined once the number of particles around the liquid core is given, which depends on the size ratio of the liquid core and shell particle. Since hybrid clusters are heavier than PS particles, they can be purified using centrifugation.

Trifaceted Mickey Mouse Amphiphiles for Programmable Self-Assembly, DNA Complexation and Organ-Selective Gene Delivery

Instilling segregated cationic and lipophilic domains with an angular disposition in a trehalose-based trifaceted macrocyclic scaffold allows engineering patchy molecular nanoparticles leveraging directional interactions that emulate those controlling self-assembling processes in viral capsids. The resulting trilobular amphiphilic derivatives, featuring a Mickey Mouse architecture, can electrostatically interact with plasmid DNA (pDNA) and further engage in hydrophobic contacts to promote condensation into transfectious nanocomplexes. Notably, the topology and internal structure of the cyclooligosaccharide/pDNA co-assemblies can be molded by fine-tuning the valency and characteristics of the cationic and lipophilic patches, which strongly impacts the transfection efficacy in vitro and in vivo. Outstanding organ selectivities can then be programmed with no need of incorporating a biorecognizable motif in the formulation. The results provide a versatile strategy for the construction of fully synthetic and perfectly monodisperse nonviral gene delivery systems uniquely suited for optimization schemes by making cyclooligosaccharide patchiness the focus.

Top-Down Heterogeneous Colloidal Engineering Using Capillary Assembly of Liquid Particles

Capillary assembly of liquid particles (CALP) is a microfabrication strategy for engineering arbitrarily shaped polymer colloids. The method entails depositing emulsion particles into patterned microarrays within a fluidic cell: coalescence, polymerization, and extraction of the deposited material engender faceted colloids. Herein, the versatility of CALP is demonstrated by using both consecutive assembly and heterogeneous coassembly to engineer geometrically diverse Janus and patchy colloids. Liquid particles (LPs) can be patterned laterally across the plane of the template by manipulating the capillary immersion force, liquid particle hardness, and rate of coalescence. Bilayers of different polymeric LPs and patchy microarrays are fabricated, comprising solid colloids made from various materials including poly(styrene), p-styryltrimethoxysilane, and iron oxide. Eleven different structures including concentric Janus squares, triblock ellipsoids, and planar tetramer and pentagonal patchy particles are described. All particles are fluorescently labeled, resist flocculation, withstand extended heating, and endure dispersion in organic solvent. Further crystallization and processing into colloid-based microscale devices is therefore anticipated. Heterogeneous CALP combines top-down microfabrication with bottom-up synthesis to engineer nonequilibrium particle structures that cannot be made with wet chemistry. CALP enables the design and fabrication of colloids with complex internal construction to target hierarchical functional materials. Ultimately, the integration of colloidal building blocks comprising multiple components that are independently addressable is crucial for the development of nano/micromaterials such as filtration devices, sensors, diagnostics, solid-state catalysts, and optical electronics.
