Highlights in Interface of Wastewater Treatment by Utilizing Metal Organic Frameworks: Purification and Adsorption Kinetics

Polluted water has become a concern for the scientific community as it causes many severe threats to living beings. Detection or removal of contaminants present in wastewater and attaining purity of water that can be used for various purposes are a primary responsibility. Different treatment methods have already been used for the purification of sewage. There is a need for low-cost, highly selective, and reusable materials that can efficiently remove pollutants or purify contaminated water. In this regard, MOFs have shown significant potential for applications such as supercapacitors, drug delivery, gas storage, pollutant adsorption, etc. The outstanding structural diversity, substantial surface areas, and adjustable pore sizes of MOFs make them superior candidates for wastewater treatment. This Review provides an overview of the interaction science and engineering (kinetic and thermodynamic aspects with interactions) underpinning MOFs for water purification. First, fundamental strategies for the synthesis methods of MOFs, different categories, and their applicability in wastewater treatment are summarized, followed by a detailed explanation of various interaction mechanisms. Finally, current challenges and future outlooks for research on MOF materials toward the adsorption of hazardous components are discussed. A new avenue for modifying their structural characteristics for the adsorption and separation of hazardous materials, which will undoubtedly direct future work, is also summarized.

Crystalline versus Amorphous: High-Performance Hafnium Phosphonate Framework for the Separation of Uranium and Transuranium Elements

Metal phosphonate frameworks (MPFs) consisting of tetravalent metal ions and aryl-phosphonate ligands feature a large affinity for actinides and excellent stabilities in harsh aqueous environments. However, it remains elusive how the crystallinity of MPFs influences their performance in actinide separation. To this end, we prepared a new category of porous, ultrastable MPF with different crystallinities for uranyl and transuranium separation. The results demonstrated that crystalline MPF was generally a better adsorbent for uranyl than the amorphous counterpart and ranked as the top-performing one for uranyl and plutonium in strong acidic solutions. A plausible uranyl sequestration mechanism was unveiled by using powder X-ray diffraction in tandem with vibrational spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, and elemental analysis.

Microporous Metal-Phosphonates with a Novel Orthogonalized Linker and Complementary Guests: Insights for Trivalent Metal Complexes from Divalent Metal Complexes

The reliable self-assembly of microporous metal-phosphonate materials remains a longstanding challenge. This stems from, generally, more coordination modes for the functional group allowing more dense structures, and stronger bonding driving less crystalline products. Here, a novel orthogonalized aryl-phosphonate linker, 1,3,5-tris(4'-phosphono-2',6'-dimethylphenyl) benzene (H₆ L3) has been used to direct formation of open frameworks. The peripheral aryl rings of H₆ L3 are orthogonalized relative to the central aromatic ring giving a tri-cleft conformation of the linker in which small aromatic molecules can readily associate. When coordinated to magnesium ions, a series of porous crystalline metal-organic, and hydrogen-bonded metal-organic frameworks (MOFs, HMOFs) are formed (CALF-41 (Mg), HCALF-42 (Mg), -43 (Mg)). While most metal-organic frameworks are tailored based on choice of metal and linker, here, the network structures are highly dependent on the inclusion and structure of the guest aromatic compounds. Larger guests, and a higher stoichiometry of metal, result in increased solvation of the metal ion, resulting in networks with connectivities increasingly involving hydrogen-bonds rather than direct phosphonate coordination. Upon thermal activation and aromatic template removal, the materials exhibit surface areas ranging from 400-600 m² /g. Self-assembly in the absence of aromatic guests yields mixtures of phases, frequently co-producing a dense 3-fold interpenetrated structure (1). Interestingly, a series of both more porous (530-900 m² /g), and more robust solids is formed by complexing with trivalent metal ions (Al, Ga, In) with aromatic guest; however, these are only attainable as microcrystalline powders. The polyprotic nature of phosphonate linkers enables structural analogy to the divalent analogues and these are identified as CALF-41 analogues. Finally, insights to the structural transformations during metal ion desolvation in this family are gained by considering a pair of structurally related Co materials, whose hydrogen-bonded (HCALF-44 (Co)) and desolvated (CALF-44 (Co)) coordination bonded networks were fully structurally characterized.

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Greenhouse Gas Applications

Using petrol to supply energy for a car or burning coal to heat a building generates plenty of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including carbon dioxide (CO₂ ), water vapor (H₂ O), methane (CH₄ ), nitrous oxide (N₂ O), ozone (O₃ ), fluorinated gases. These up-and-coming metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are structurally endowed with rigid inorganic nodes and versatile organic linkers, which have been extensively used in the GHG-related applications to improve the lives and protect the environment. Porous MOF materials and their derivatives have been demonstrated to be competitive and promising candidates for GHG separation, storage and conversions as they shows facile preparation, large porosity, adjustable nanostructure, abundant topology, and tunable physicochemical property. Enormous progress has been made in GHG storage and separation intrinsically stemmed from the different interaction between guest molecule and host framework from MOF itself in the recent five years. Meanwhile, the use of porous MOF materials to transform GHG and the influence of external conditions on the adsorption performance of MOFs for GHG are also enclosed. In this review, it is also highlighted that the existing challenges and future directions are discussed and envisioned in the rational design, facile synthesis and comprehensive utilization of MOFs and their derivatives for practical applications.

Open metal site (OMS)-inspired investigation of adsorption and catalytic functions in a porous metal-organic framework (MOF)

In this article, we report the adsorption and catalytic study of the three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic framework (MOF) {Mn₂(1,4-bdc)₂(DMF)₂} (1) (1,4-bdcH₂, 1,4-benzene dicarboxylic acid; DMF, N,N-dimethylformamide) together with the synthesis and structure of two new Mn(II)-MOFs {Mn₃(Br-bdc)₃(DMF)₄} (2) and {Mn₃(NO₂-bdc)₃(DMF)₄} (3) (Br-bdcH₂, 2-bromo-1,4-benzene dicarboxylic acid; NO₂-bdcH₂, 2-nitro-1,4-benzene dicarboxylic acid) under solvothermal conditions. Compounds 2 and 3 have two-dimensional (2D) extended structures and feature trimeric {Mn₃(CO₂)₆} units that serve as secondary building units for the frameworks. The desolvated compound of 1, denoted as 1', having potential Mn(II) open metal sites (OMSs) lined in a one-dimensional (1D) Mn-chain interconnected by carboxylate groups, exhibits guest-selective adsorption of solvent vapours wherein the compound shows a stepwise profile with H₂O vapour, while a gated isotherm was recorded with MeOH. After realizing the favourable interaction of 1' with polar solvent molecules, we have used Mn(II) OMSs in 1' for efficient cyanosilylation reactions of aromatic aldehydes. We have recorded 100% conversion for eight aromatic aldehydes, while several other aldehydes showed appreciable conversion. Notably, the recorded conversions in the case of many substrates are higher than those for many other reported MOF catalysts.

Linking oxidative and reductive clusters to prepare crystalline porous catalysts for photocatalytic CO2 reduction with H2O

Mimicking natural photosynthesis to convert CO₂ with H₂O into value-added fuels achieving overall reaction is a promising way to reduce the atmospheric CO₂ level. Casting the catalyst of two or more catalytic sites with rapid electron transfer and interaction may be an effective strategy for coupling photocatalytic CO₂ reduction and H₂O oxidation. Herein, based on the MOF ∪ COF collaboration, we have carefully designed and synthesized a crystalline hetero-metallic cluster catalyst denoted MCOF-Ti₆Cu₃ with spatial separation and functional cooperation between oxidative and reductive clusters. It utilizes dynamic covalent bonds between clusters to promote photo-induced charge separation and transfer efficiency, to drive both the photocatalytic oxidative and reductive reactions. MCOF-Ti₆Cu₃ exhibits fine activity in the conversion of CO₂ with water into HCOOH (169.8 μmol g⁻¹h⁻¹). Remarkably, experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that photo-excited electrons are transferred from Ti to Cu, indicating that the Cu cluster is the catalytic reduction center.

A crystalline hetero-metallic cluster catalyst based on a covalent organic framework strategy is reported. The catalyst can facilitate both photocatalytic oxidative and reductive reactions leading to efficient production of HCOOH from CO2 and H2O.

Synthesis and crystal structure of bis[trans-diaqua(1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-κ4 N 1,N 4,N 8,N 11)nickel(II)] trans-(1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-κ4 N 1,N 4,N 8,N 11)bis[4,4′,4′′-(1,3,5-trimethylbenzene-2,4,6-triyl)tris(hydrogen phenylphosphonato-κO)]nickel(II) decahydrate

The components of the title compound, [Ni(C10H24N4)(H2O)2]2[Ni(C10H24N4)(C27H24O9P3)2]·10H2O are two centrosymmetric [Ni(C10H24N4)(H2O)2]2+ dications, a centrosymmetric [Ni(C10H24N4)(C27H24O9P3)2]4− tetra-anion and five crystallographically unique water molecules of crystallization. All of the nickel ions are coordinated by the four secondary N atoms of the macrocyclic cyclam ligands, which adopt the most energetically stable trans-III conformation, and the mutually trans O atoms of either water molecules in the cations or the phosphonate groups in the anion in a tetragonally distorted NiN4O2 octahedral coordination geometry. Strong O—H...O hydrogen bonds between the protonated and the non-protonated phosphonate O atoms of neighboring anions result in the formation of layers oriented parallel to the bc plane, which are linked into a three-dimensional network by virtue of numerous N—H...O and O—H...O hydrogen bonds arising from the sec-NH groups of the macrocycles, phosphonate O atoms and coordinated and non-coordinated water molecules.

Green construction of eco-friendly phosphotungstic acid Sr-MOF catalysts for crystal violet removal and synthesis of coumarin and xanthene compounds

There is an urgent need to improve engineering and synthetic chemistry, either through the use of eco-friendly starting materials or the proper design of novel synthesis routes. This reduces the contamination of toxic chemicals and helps the disposal of organic dyes. In the current work, a metal–organic framework-based Sr(ii) was fabricated to achieve the desired goal for dye removal and catalysis. Sr-MOF-based phosphotungstic acid (PWA/Sr-MOF) was hydrothermally synthesized to study its adsorption and catalytic activities. Remarkably, about 99.9% of crystal violet (CV) dye was removed using PWA/Sr-MOF within 90 min at room temperature. Various factors have been studied to investigate the optimum conditions such as pH of solution, initial dye concentration, contact time, and temperature. The maximum adsorption capacity of CV dye was reached after 90 min and well fitted the pseudo-second kinetic order and Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Coumarin and xanthene reactions were chosen to test the catalytic activity of the prepared PWA/Sr-MOF at 373 K. Furthermore, structural and chemical characterization of the fabricated samples was obtained using FT-IR, XRD, TGA, DTA, TEM, EDX, and XPS. PWA/Sr-MOF can be considered as a promising and green framework in the material design used to study catalytic and adsorption performances.

A Review: Ion Transport of Two-Dimensional Materials in Novel Technologies from Macro to Nanoscopic Perspectives

Ion transport is a significant concept that underlies a variety of technologies including membrane technology, energy storages, optical, chemical, and biological sensors and ion-mobility exploration techniques. These applications are based on the concepts of capacitance and ion transport, so a prior understanding of capacitance and ion transport phenomena is crucial. In this review, the principles of capacitance and ion transport are described from a theoretical and practical point of view. The review covers the concepts of Helmholtz capacitance, diffuse layer capacitance and space charge capacitance, which is also referred to as quantum capacitance in low-dimensional materials. These concepts are attributed to applications in the electrochemical technologies such as energy storage and excitable ion sieving in membranes. This review also focuses on the characteristic role of channel heights (from micrometer to angstrom scales) in ion transport. Ion transport technologies can also be used in newer applications including biological sensors and multifunctional microsupercapacitors. This review improves our understanding of ion transport phenomena and demonstrates various applications that is applicable of the continued development in the technologies described.

Impact of Pore Size and Defects on the Selective Adsorption of Acetylene in Alkyne-Functionalized Nickel(II)-Pyrazolate-Based MOFs

C₂H₂/CO₂ separation is a highly challenging process as a consequence of their similar physicochemical properties. In this work we have explored, by static and dynamic gas sorption techniques and computational modelling, the suitability of a series of two isoreticular robust Ni(II)pyrazolate‐based MOFs, bearing alkyne moieties on the ligand backbones, for C₂H₂/CO₂ separation. The results are consistent with high adsorption capacity and selectivity of the essayed systems towards C₂H₂ molecules. Furthermore, a post‐synthetic treatment with KOH ethanolic solution gives rise to linker vacancy defects and incorporation of extraframework potassium ions. Creation of defects is responsible for increased adsorption capacity for both gases, however, strong interactions of the cluster basic sites and extraframework potassium cations with CO₂ molecules are responsible for a lowering of C₂H₂ over CO₂ selectivity.

Ion-Exchanged UPG-1 as Potential Electrolyte for Fuel Cells

Proton-exchange membrane fuel cells are an attractive green technology for energy production. However, one of their major drawbacks is instability of the electrolytes under working conditions (i.e., temperature and humidity). Some metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently emerged as promising alternative electrolyte materials because of their higher stability (compared with the organic polymers currently used as electrolytes), proton conductivity, and outstanding porosity and versatility. Here, we present ionic exchange in a microporous zirconium phosphonate, UPG-1, as an efficient strategy to enhance its conductivity and cyclability. Thus, labile protons of the hybrid structure were successfully replaced by different alkali cations (Li⁺, Na⁺, and K⁺), leading to 2 orders of magnitude higher proton conductivity than the pristine UPG-1 (up to 2.3 × 10^-2 S·cm^-1, which is comparable with those of the commercial electrolytes). Further, the proton conductivity was strongly influenced by the MOF hydrophilicity and the polarization strength of the cation, as suggested by molecular simulation. Finally, a mixed-matrix membrane containing the best-performing material (the potassium-exchanged one) was successfully prepared, showing moderate proton conductivity (up to 8.51 × 10^-3 S·cm^-1).
