Diverse Functionality of Molecular Germanium: Emerging Opportunities as Catalysts

Fundamental research on germanium as the central element in compounds for bond activation chemistry and catalysis has achieved significant feats over the last two decades. Designing strategies for small molecule activations and the ultimate catalysts established capitalize on the orbital modalities of germanium, apparently imitating the transition-metal frontier orbitals. There is a growing body of examples in contemporary research implicating the tunability of the frontier orbitals through avant-garde approaches such as geometric constrained empowered reactivity, bimetallic orbital complementarity, cooperative reactivity, etc. The goal of this Perspective is to provide readers with an overview of the emerging opportunities in the field of germanium-based catalysis by perceiving the underlying key principles. This will help to convert the discrete set of findings into a more systematic vision for catalyst designs. Critical exposition on the germanium's frontier orbitals participations evokes the key challenges involved in innovative catalyst designs, wherein viewpoints are provided. We close by addressing the forward-looking directions for germanium-based catalytic manifold development. We hope that this Perspective will be motivational for applied research on germanium as a constituent of pragmatic catalysts.

Dialumene as a Dimeric or Monomeric Al Synthon for C-F Activation in Monofluorobenzene

The activation of C-F bonds has long been regarded as the subject of research in organometallic chemistry, given their synthetic relevance and the fact that fluorine is the most abundant halogen in the Earth's crust. However, C-F bond activation remains a largely unsolved challenge due to the high bond dissociation energies, which was historically dominated by transition metal complexes. Main group elements that can cleave unactivated monofluorobenzene are still quite rare and restricted to s-block complexes with a biphilic nature. Herein, we demonstrate an Al-mediated activation of monofluorobenzene using a neutral dialumene, allowing for the synthesis of the formal oxidative addition products at either double or single aluminum centers. This neutral dialumene system introduces a novel methodology for C-F bond activation based on formal oxidative addition and reductive elimination processes around the two aluminum centers, as demonstrated by combined experimental and computational studies. A "masked" alumylene was unprecedentedly synthesized to prove the proposed reductive elimination pathway. Furthermore, the synthetic utility is highlighted by the functionalization of the resulting aryl-aluminum compounds.

Sequential Oxygenation of Bis(β-diketiminate) on a Selective Diruthenium Platform

This article demonstrated the redox-noninnocent phenylene-linked bis(β-diketiminate) (L2-)-bridged first example of isomeric diruthenium(III)-acac species (acac = acetylacetonate) and its ability to activate dioxygen. The coordination of deprotonated L2- to the {Ru(acac)2} in bis(bidentate) mode led to isomeric {(acac)2RuIII}2(μ-L2-) (S = 1, 1-trans/1-cis, green). 1 displayed Ru(III)-based anisotropic EPR in CH3CN but without the resolution of the forbidden (ΔMs = 2) g1/2 signal at 77 K. 1-cis, however, slowly transformed to the energetically favored 1-trans form. 1 underwent two-step oxygenation at the Cβ sites of L2- to form the β-diketiminate/α-ketodiimine (L'-)-bridged mixed valent (acac)2RuIII(μ-L'-)RuII(acac)2 (2, S = 1/2, pink) followed by bis(α-ketodiimine) (L″)-bridged isovalent (acac)2RuII(μ-L″)RuII(acac)2 (3, S = 0, red). The role of O2 toward 1 → 2/3 was corroborated by 18O2 labeling experiment. Redox steps of 1-3 varied as a function of isomeric identity, bridge, and metal oxidation state. The calculated MOs and Mulliken spin densities attributed to the noninnocence of L2-, L'-, and L″ in the respective complexes. Spectrophotometric monitoring of 1 → 2 revealed pseudo-first-order rate constants (105k s-1) of 1.8 (303 K), 3.5 (313 K), 7.7 (323 K), and 17.0 (333 K) and ΔH⧧/ΔS⧧/ΔG⧧ of 14.3 kcal mol-1/-33.1 cal mol-1 K-1/24.2 kcal mol-1 (298 K), respectively. Moreover, characterization of the short-lived blue intermediate obtained during the conversion of 1 → 2/3 upon exposure to O2 supported its valence tautomeric form (VT1, RuIII-L2--RuIII ↔ RuIII-L•--RuII, S = 1), which in effect facilitated oxygen activation at the ligand backbone.

Valence Tautomerism Induced Proton Coupled Electron Transfer:X-H Bond Oxidation with a Dinuclear Au(II) Hydroxide Complex

We report the preparation and characterization of the dinuclear AuII hydroxide complex AuII 2(L)2(OH)2 (L=N,N'-bis (2,6-dimethyl) phenylformamidinate) and study its reactivity towards weak X-H bonds. Through the interplay of kinetic analysis and computational studies, we demonstrate that the oxidation of cyclohexadiene follows a concerted proton-coupled electron transfer (cPCET) mechanism, a rare type of reactivity for Au complexes. We find that the Au-Au σ-bond undergoes polarization in the PCET event leading to an adjustment of oxidation levels for both Au centers prior to C(sp3)-H bond cleavage. We thus describe the oxidation event as a valence tautomerism-induced PCET where the basicity of one reduced Au-OH unit provides a proton acceptor and the second more oxidized Au center serves as an electron acceptor. The coordination of these events allows for unprecedented radical-type reactivity by a closed shell AuII complex.

Metal-metal cooperativity boosts Lewis basicity and reduction properties of the bis(gallanediyl) CyL2Ga2

The interplay of two proximate gallium centres equips the bimetallic complex CyL2Ga2 (1, CyL2 = 1,2-trans-Cy[NC(Me)C(H)C(Me)N(Dip)]2, Dip = 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3) with increased Lewis basicity and higher reducing power compared to the monometallic gallanediyl LGa (2, L = HC[MeCN(Dip)]2) as evidenced by cross-over experiments. Quantum chemical calculations were employed to support the experimental findings.

Anion-Dependent Reactivity of Mono- and Dinuclear Boron Cations

The dinuclear bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) borane adduct 2 rapidly reacts with tritylium salts at room temperature but the outcome is strongly impacted by the respective counter-ion. Using tritylium tetrakis(perfluoro-tert-butoxy)aluminate affords - depending on the solvent - either the bis(boronium) ion 4 or the hydride-bridged dication 5. In case of tritylium hexafluorophosphate, however, H/F exchange occurs between boron and phosphorus yielding the dinuclear BF3 adduct 3 along with phosphorus dihydride trifluoride. H/F exchange also takes place when using the mononuclear N-heterocyclic carbene BH3 adduct 6 and hence provides a facile route to PH2 F3 , which is usually synthesized in more complex reaction sequences regularly involving toxic hydrogen fluoride. DFT calculations shed light on the H/F exchange between the borenium ion and the [PF6 ]- counter-ion and the computed mechanism features only small barriers in line with the experimental observations.

Main group metal-mediated strategies for C-H and C-F bond activation and functionalisation of fluoroarenes

With fluoroaromatic compounds increasingly employed as scaffolds in agrochemicals and active pharmaceutical ingredients, the development of methods which facilitate regioselective functionalisation of their C-H and C-F bonds is a frontier of modern synthesis. Along with classical lithiation and nucleophilic aromatic substitution protocols, the vast majority of research efforts have focused on transition metal-mediated transformations enabled by the redox versatilities of these systems. Breaking new ground in this area, recent advances in main group metal chemistry have delineated unique ways in which s-block, Al, Ga and Zn metal complexes can activate this important type of fluorinated molecule. Underpinned by chemical cooperativity, these advances include either the use of heterobimetallic complexes where the combined effect of two metals within a single ligand set enables regioselective low polarity C-H metalation; or the use of novel low valent main group metal complexes supported by special stabilising ligands to induce C-F bond activations. Merging these two different approaches, this Perspective provides an overview of the emerging concept of main-group metal mediated C-H/C-F functionalisation of fluoroarenes. Showcasing the untapped potential that these systems can offer in these processes; focus is placed on how special chemical cooperation is established and how the trapping of key reaction intermediates can inform mechanistic understanding.

Anions featuring an aluminium-silicon core with alumanyl silanide and aluminata-silene characteristics

Molecular species containing multiple bonds to aluminium have long been challenging synthetic targets. Despite recent landmark discoveries in this area, heterodinuclear Al-E multiple bonds (where E is a group-14 element) have remained rare and limited to highly polarized π-interactions (Al=E ↔ +Al-E-). Here we report the isolation of three alumanyl silanide anions that feature an Al-Si core stabilized by bulky substituents and a Si-Na interaction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, spectroscopic analysis and density functional theory calculations show that the Al-Si interaction possesses partial double bond character. Preliminary reactivity studies support this description of the compounds through two resonance structures: one that displays a predominant nucleophilic character of the sodium-coordinated silicon centre in the Al-Si core, as shown by silanide-like reactivity towards halosilane electrophiles and the CH-insertion of phenylacetylene. Moreover, we report an alumanyl silanide with a sequestered sodium cation. Cleavage of the Si-Na bond by [2.2.2]cryptand increases the double bond character of the Al-Si core to produce an anion with high aluminata-silene (-Al=Si) character.

N-Heterocyclic imine-based bis-gallium(I) carbene analogs featuring a four-membered Ga2N2 ring

A combination of Ga(I) centers as important building blocks and scaffolds containing N-heterocyclic imines gives new insights into low-valent Ga chemistry. In this study, a mixture of LDipNLi (LDip = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-imidazolin-2-ylidene), tBuOK, and Cp*Ga (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) in toluene afforded [LDipN-Ga]2 (1) via salt metathesis. X-ray structure analysis of 1 revealed a four-membered Ga2N2 ring, and DFT studies indicated the presence of a lone pair at each Ga center. In addition, compound 1 demonstrated diverse reactivities towards methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate, diphenyl disulfide, 9,10-phenanthrenequinone, and ECl2 (E = Ge or Sn).

Cooperative Initiation in a Dinuclear Indium Complex for CO2 Epoxide Copolymerization

Dinuclear indium complexes have been synthesized and characterized. These include neutral and cationic indium complexes supported by a Schiff base ligand bearing a binaphthol linker. The new compounds were investigated for alternating copolymerization of CO₂ and cyclohexene oxide. In particular, the neutral indium chloride complex (±)-[(O_NapN_iN)InCl₂]₂ (4) showed high conversion of cyclohexene oxide and selectivity for poly(cyclohexene carbonate) formation without cocatalysts at 80 °C under various CO₂ pressures (2-30 bar). Importantly, the reactivity of the dinuclear indium chloride complex 4 is drastically different from that of the mononuclear indium chloride complex (±)-(NN_iO_tBu)InCl₂ (5), suggesting a cooperative initiation mechanism involving the two indium centers in 4.

Unravelling the Potential of Ylides in Stabilizing Low-Valent Group 13 Compounds: Theoretical Predictions of Stable, Five-Membered Group 13 (Aluminum and Gallium) Carbenoids Capable of Small-Molecule Activation

Computational investigations provide evidence toward the remarkable ability of strongly electron-donating ylidic functionalities in stabilizing singlet group 13 carbenoids with promising ligand properties. All of the proposed carbenoids are found to be considerably nucleophilic and possess significant singlet-triplet energy separation values. The calculated activation barriers and reaction free energies obtained for the cleavage of different enthalpically strong bonds by these carbenoids are found to be either comparable to or lower than those of the experimentally evaluated aluminum and gallium carbenoids, thereby indicating their potential in small-molecule activation.

Structurally characterised intermediate of the oxidative addition of a heteroleptic germylene to gallanediyle

Bond activation reactions using main group metal complexes are gaining increasing interest. We report on reactions of LGa (L = HC[C(Me)N(Ar)]₂, Ar = Dipp = 2,6-i-Pr₂C₆H₃,) with heteroleptic tetrylenes L'ECl (E = Ge, Sn; L' = N(SiMe₃)Ar), yielding the donor-acceptor complex LGa-Sn(Cl)L' (1) or the oxidative addition product L(Cl)GaGeL' (3). The reaction with DMPGeCl (DMP = 2,6-Mes₂C₆H₃, Mes = 2,4,6-Me₃C₆H₂) yielded LGa(μ-Cl)GeDMP (2), which represents an intermediate of the oxidative addition reaction. 1-3 were characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy as well as by single crystal X-ray diffraction (sc-XRD), while their electronic nature was analyzed by quantum chemical calculations.

Hidden silylium-type reactivity of a siloxane-based phosphonium-hydroborate ion pair

A new class of siloxane-based cations with hidden silylium-type reactivity is provided, which, in combination with an arylborate counteranion, initiates a highly selective para-C(sp²)-F defunctionalization of a perfluorinated aryl group. The hydrodefluorinated aryl borane is obtained as a crystalline solid via continuous sublimation during the reaction. The heterocyclic six-membered cation could be obtained single-crystalline after dehydrogenative anion exchange. DFT calculations give insight into the bonding within the siloxane-based cation and the mechanism of the ion pair reaction.

Geminal C-Cl and Si-Cl bond activation of chloromethanes and chlorosilanes by gallanediyl LGa

The activation of relatively inert E-X σ-bonds by low-valent main group metal complexes is receiving increasing interest. We here confirm the promising potential of gallanediyl LGa (L = HC[C(Me)N(Dip)]₂, Dip = 2,6-i-Pr₂C₆H₃) to activate E-Cl (E = C, Si) σ-bonds of group 14 element compounds. Equimolar reactions of LGa with chloromethanes and chlorosilanes EH_xCl_4-x (E = C, x = 0-2; E = Si, x = 0, 1) occurred with E-Cl bond insertion and formation of gallylmethanes and -silanes L(Cl)GaEH_xCl_3-x (E = C, x = 2 (1), 1 (2), 0 (3); E = Si, x = 1 (4)). In contrast, consecutive insertion into a geminal E-Cl bond was observed with two equivalents of LGa, yielding digallyl complexes [L(Cl)Ga]₂EH_xCl_2-x (E = C, x = 2 (5); E = Si, x = 1 (6), 0 (7)). Compounds 1-7 were characterized by heteronuclear NMR (¹H, ¹³C, ²⁹Si (4, 6)), IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis, and their solid-state structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (sc-XRD).

Diphosphino-Functionalized 1,8-Naphthyridines: a Multifaceted Ligand Platform for Boranes and Diboranes

A 1,8-naphthyridine diphosphine (NDP) reacts with boron-containing Lewis acids to generate complexes featuring a number of different naphthyridine bonding modes. When exposed to diborane B2 Br4 , NDP underwent self-deprotonation to afford [NDP-B2 Br3 ]Br, an unsymmetrical diborane comprised of four fused rings. The reaction of two equivalents of monoborane BBr3 and NDP in a non-polar solvent provided the simple phosphine-borane adduct [NDP(BBr3 )2 ], which then underwent intramolecular halide abstraction to furnish the salt [NDP-BBr2 ][BBr4 ], featuring a different coordination mode from that of [NDP-B2 Br3 ]Br. Direct deprotonation of NDP by KHMDS or PhCH2 K generates mono- and dipotassium reagents, respectively. The monopotassium reagent reacts with one or half an equivalent of B2 (NMe2 )2 Cl2 to afford NDP-based diboranes with three or four amino substituents.

Structural Diversity of Di-Metalized Arginine Evidenced by Infrared Multiple Photon Dissociation (IRMPD) Spectroscopy in the Gas Phase

Although metal cations are prevalent in biological media, the species of multi-metal cationized biomolecules have received little attention so far. Studying these complexes in isolated state is important, since it provides intrinsic information about the interaction among them on the molecular level. Our investigation here demonstrates the unexpected structural diversity of such species generated by a matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) source in the gas phase. The photodissociation spectroscopic and theoretical study reflects that the co-existing isomers of [Arg+Rb+K−H]⁺ can have energies ≥95 kJ/mol higher than that of the most stable one. While the result can be rationalized by the great isomerization energy barrier due to the coordination, it strongly reminds us to pay more attention to their structural diversities for multi-metalized fundamental biological molecules, especially for the ones with the ubiquitous alkali metal ions.

A bis(imino)carbazolate pincer ligand stabilized mononuclear gallium(I) compound: synthesis, characterization, and reactivity

The first bis(imino)carbazolate pincer ligand supported mononuclear Ga(I) compound LGa: (3) was synthesized and fully characterized. Oxidation of 3 with elemental selenium afforded the dinuclear Ga(III) compound [LGa(μ-Se)]₂ (4) bearing two bridging Se atoms. Ligand substitution of Cr(CO)₆ with 3 under UV light irradiation afforded the gallylene-chromium complex LGa: → Cr(CO)₅ (5). In addition, the attempted synthesis of the aluminium analogue LAl: through reduction of LAlI₂ (7) only led to isolation of the dinuclear Al(III) compound (LAlI)₂ (8), most probably formed through the C-C coupling of two imino radicals.

Catalytic Hydrodefluorination via Oxidative Addition, Ligand Metathesis, and Reductive Elimination at Bi(I)/Bi(III) Centers

Herein, we report a hydrodefluorination reaction of polyfluoroarenes catalyzed by bismuthinidenes, Phebox-Bi(I) and OMe-Phebox-Bi(I). Mechanistic studies on the elementary steps support a Bi(I)/Bi(III) redox cycle that comprises C(sp²)-F oxidative addition, F/H ligand metathesis, and C(sp²)-H reductive elimination. Isolation and characterization of a cationic Phebox-Bi(III)(4-tetrafluoropyridyl) triflate manifests the feasible oxidative addition of Phebox-Bi(I) into the C(sp²)-F bond. Spectroscopic evidence was provided for the formation of a transient Phebox-Bi(III)(4-tetrafluoropyridyl) hydride during catalysis, which decomposes at low temperature to afford the corresponding C(sp²)-H bond while regenerating the propagating Phebox-Bi(I). This protocol represents a distinct catalytic example where a main-group center performs three elementary organometallic steps in a low-valent redox manifold.

Synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of group 13 hydride complexes based on amido-amine ligands

The preparation of group 13 hydride complexes supported by N,N',N'-substituted 1,2-ethanediamines is reported. Dihydridoalanes LAlH2, for which the aggregation behaviour in solution and in the solid state is modulated by the steric bulk of the aryl substituent, readily react with elemental sulphur affording dinuclear aluminium sulphide complexes. Chloridohydrido trielanes LEHCl (E = B, Al, Ga) have been synthesized as well starting from the hydrochloride salts of the protio-ligands and the chlorido substituent within LAlHCl is readily replaced using Li[N(SiMe3)2]. Depending on the steric bulk of the ligand, the chloridohydrido gallane gives rise to a dinuclear gallium(ii) complex upon heating. All twelve complexes reported in here have been fully characterized and the solid-state structure of eleven complexes has been examined by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Group 13 Heavier Carbene Analogues Stabilized by the Bulky Bis(4-benzhydryl-benzoxazol-2-yl)methanide Ligand

On the basis of the bulky bis(4-benzhydryl-benzoxazyl-2-yl)methane ligand (^4-BzhH2Box₂CH₂), neutral monovalent group 13 complexes [M₁₃(^4-BzhH2Box₂CH)] [M₁₃ = Tl (1), In (2), or Ga (3)] have been synthesized by salt metathesis reaction of the corresponding potassium or sodium precursor and TlOTf, InOTf, or "GaI". The diiodido gallium species [GaI₂(^4-BzhH2Box₂CH)] (3a) was realized as a byproduct once the synthesis of 3 was carried out at higher temperatures. The synthesis of [AlI₂(^4-BzhH2Box₂CH)] (6) as a potential precursor for an aluminum(I) congener was accomplished by two alternative synthetic routes. During one of those procedures, [AlMe₂(^4-BzhH2Box₂CH)] (4) was synthesized in good yields by deprotonation with an AlMe₃ solution (method A). Subsequently, 4 was converted to the monoiodinated species [AlMeI(^4-BzhH2Box₂CH₂)] (5) using 1 equiv of I₂ or to 6 by iodination with 2 equiv of I₂ at 70 °C for 4 days. As an alternative, complex 6 could be prepared by iodination of 1 equiv of I₂ and [AlH₂(^4-BzhH2Box₂CH)] (7), which was previously obtained by facile reaction of ^4-BzhH2Box₂CH₂ and AlH₃NMe₂Et. All main products 1-7 were completely characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray structure determination. Alane 7 was additionally analyzed by solid-state fluorescence spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculations on [M₁₃(^4-BzhH2Box₂CH)] [M₁₃ = Tl (1), In (2), Ga (3), or Al] revealed that the complexes consist of monovalent group 13 cations coordinated by an anionic (^4-BzhH2Box₂CH) ligand similar to metallacycles incorporating a NacNac ligand.

Calcium and Magnesium Bis(β-diketiminate) Complexes: Impact of the Alkylene Bridge on Schlenk-Type Rearrangements

Dinuclear heteroleptic alkaline-earth-metal complexes are interesting synthetic targets because the close proximity of two metals allows for cooperative effects. However, these complexes are also prone to undergoing Schlenk-type rearrangements, affording less-active homoleptic complexes. Here we present the metalation of bis(β-diketimine) ligands possessing flexible bridging groups, i.e., 1,2-ethylene, 1,3-propylene, and trans-1,2-cyclohexylene, using calcium and magnesium precursors. Four mononuclear homoleptic calcium complexes were obtained, highlighting the pronounced tendency of calcium to undergo Schlenk-like redistributions. In the case of magnesium, however, the bridging group plays a crucial role, yielding seven dinuclear heteroleptic complexes but also one mononuclear and one dinuclear homoleptic complexes. In addition, a trinuclear mixed heteroleptic-homoleptic magnesium complex, which is a rare example of an intermediate of the Schlenk equilibrium, was isolated.
