Interaction of Photogenerated Spin Qubit Pairs with a Third Electron Spin in DNA Hairpins

Enhancing Photogenerated Radical Pair Properties in Donor-Chromophore-Acceptor Systems for Quantum Information Applications

We report on new donor-chromophore-acceptor triads BDX-ANI-NDI and BDX-ANI-xy-NDI where the BDX donor is 2,2,6,6-tetramethylbenzo[1,2-d;4,5-d]bis[1,3]dioxole, the ANI chromophore is 4-(N-piperidinyl)naphthalene-1,8-dicarboximide, the NDI acceptor is naphthalene-1,8:4,5-bis(dicarboximide), and xy is a 2,5-xylyl spacer. The results on these compounds are compared to the analogous derivatives having a p-methoxyaniline (MeOAn) as the donor. BDX•+ has no nitrogen atoms and only a single hydrogen atom coupled to its unpaired electron spin, and therefore has significantly decreased hyperfine interactions compared to MeOAn•+. We use femtosecond transient absorption (fsTA) and nanosecond TA (nsTA) spectroscopies, the latter with an applied static magnetic field, to study the charge transfer dynamics and determine the spin-spin exchange interaction (J) for BDX•+-ANI-NDI•- and BDX•+-ANI-xy-NDI•- at both ambient and cryogenic temperatures. Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and pulse-EPR measurements on these spin-correlated radical pairs (SCRPs) were used to probe their spin dynamics. We demonstrate that BDX•+-ANI-xy-NDI•- has an unusually long lifetime of ∼550 μs in glassy butyronitrile (PrCN) at 85 K, which makes it useful for pulse-EPR studies that target quantum information science (QIS) applications. We also show that rotation of the BDX group about the single bond linking it to the neighboring phenyl group has a significant impact on the spin dynamics, and in particular the magnitude of J. By comparing the results on these compounds to the analogous MeOAn series, insights into design principles for creating improved spin-correlated radical pair systems for QIS studies are obtained.

Sculpting photoproducts with DNA origami

Natural light-harvesting systems spatially organize densely packed dyes in different configurations to either transport excitons or convert them into charge photoproducts, with high efficiency. In contrast, artificial photosystems like organic solar cells and light-emitting diodes lack this fine structural control, limiting their efficiency. Thus, biomimetic multi-dye systems are needed to organize dyes with the sub-nanometer spatial control required to sculpt resulting photoproducts. Here, we synthesize 11 distinct perylene diimide (PDI) dimers integrated into DNA origami nanostructures and identify dimer architectures that offer discrete control over exciton transport versus charge separation. The large structural-space and site-tunability of origami uniquely provides controlled PDI dimer packing to form distinct excimer photoproducts, which are sensitive to interdye configurations. In the future, this platform enables large-scale programmed assembly of dyes mimicking natural systems to sculpt distinct photophysical products needed for a broad range of optoelectronic devices, including solar energy converters and quantum information processors.

Direct observation of chirality-induced spin selectivity in electron donor-acceptor molecules

The role of chirality in determining the spin dynamics of photoinduced electron transfer in donor-acceptor molecules remains an open question. Although chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) has been demonstrated in molecules bound to substrates, experimental information about whether this process influences spin dynamics in the molecules themselves is lacking. Here we used time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy to show that CISS strongly influences the spin dynamics of isolated covalent donor-chiral bridge-acceptor (D-Bχ-A) molecules in which selective photoexcitation of D is followed by two rapid, sequential electron-transfer events to yield D•+-Bχ-A•-. Exploiting this phenomenon affords the possibility of using chiral molecular building blocks to control electron spin states in quantum information applications.

Design and Synthesis of Cofacially-Arrayed Polyfluorene Wires for Electron and Energy Transfer Studies

A study of cofacially arrayed π-systems is of particular importance for the design of functional materials for efficient long-range intra-chain charge transfer through the bulk semiconducting materials in the layers of photovoltaic devices. The effect of π-stacking between a pair of aromatic rings has been mainly studied in the form of cyclophanes, where aromatic rings are forced into a sandwich-like geometry, which extensively deforms the aromatic rings from planarity. The synthetic difficulties associated with the preparation of cyclophane-like structures has prevented the synthesis of many examples of their multi-layered analogues. Moreover, the few available multi-layered cyclophanes are not readily amenable to the structural modification required for the construction of D-spacer-A triads needed to explore mechanisms of electron and energy transfer. In this review, we recount how a detailed experimental and computational analysis of 1,3-diarylalkanes led to the design of a new class of cofacially arrayed polyfluorenes that retain their π-stacked structure. Thus, efficient synthetic strategies have been established for the ready preparation of monodisperse polyfluorenes with up to six π-stacked fluorenes, which afford ready access to D-spacer-A triads by linking donor and acceptor groups to the polyfluorene spacers via single methylenes. Detailed ¹H NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, electrochemistry, and He(I) photoelectron spectroscopy of F2-F6 have confirmed the rigid cofacial stacking of multiple fluorenes in F2-F6, despite the presence of rotatable C-C bonds. These polyfluorenes (F2-F6) form stable cation radicals in which a single hole is delocalized amongst the stacked fluorenes, as judged by the presence of intense charge-resonance transition in their optical spectra. Interestingly, these studies also discern that delocalization of a single cationic charge could occur over multiple fluorene rings in F2-F6, while the exciton is likely localized only onto two fluorenes in F2-F6. Facile synthesis of the D-spacer-A triads allowed us to demonstrate that efficient triplet energy transfer can occur through π-stacked polyfluorenes; the mechanism of energy transfer crosses over from tunneling to hopping with increasing number of fluorenes in the polyfluorene spacer. We suggest that the development of rigidly held π-stacked polyfluorenes, described herein, with well-defined redox and optoelectronic properties provides an ideal scaffold for the study of electron and energy transfer in D-spacer-A triads, where the Fn spacers serve as models for cofacially stacked π-systems.

Quantum Dot-Organic Molecule Conjugates as Hosts for Photogenerated Spin Qubit Pairs

The inherent spin polarization present in photogenerated spin-correlated radical pairs makes them promising candidates for quantum computing and quantum sensing applications. The spin states of these systems can be probed and manipulated with microwave pulses using electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometers. However, to date, there are no reports on magnetic resonance-based spin measurements of photogenerated spin-correlated radical pairs hosted on quantum dots. In the current work, we prepare dye molecule-inorganic quantum dot conjugates and show that they can produce photogenerated spin-polarized states. The dye molecule, D131, is chosen for its ability to undergo efficient charge separation, and the nanoparticle materials, ZnO quantum dots, are chosen for their promising spin properties. Transient and steady state optical spectroscopy performed on ZnO quantum dot-D131 conjugates shows that reversible photogenerated charge separation is occurring. Transient and pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance experiments are then performed on the photogenerated radical pair, which demonstrate that (1) the radical pair is polarized at moderate temperatures and well modeled by existing theories and (2) the spin states can be accessed and manipulated with microwave pulses. This work opens the door to a new class of promising qubit materials that can be photogenerated in polarized states and hosted by highly tailorable inorganic nanoparticles.

Harnessing DNA Nanotechnology and Chemistry for Applications in Photonics and Electronics

Many photonic and electronic devices rely on nanotechnology and nanofabrication, but DNA-based approaches have yet to make a significant commercial impact in these fields even though DNA molecules are now well-established as versatile building blocks for nanostructures. As we describe here, DNA molecules can be chemically modified with a wide variety of functional groups enabling nanocargoes to be attached at precisely determined locations. DNA nanostructures can also be used as templates for the growth of inorganic structures. Together, these factors enable the use of DNA nanotechnology for the construction of many novel devices and systems. In this topical review, we discuss four case studies of potential applications in photonics and electronics: carbon nanotube transistors, devices for quantum computing, artificial electromagnetic materials, and enzymatic fuel cells. We conclude by speculating about the barriers to the exploitation of these technologies in real-world settings.

Role of trace TEMPO as electron shuttle in enhancing chloroquine phosphate elimination in UV-LED-driven persulfate activation process

Chloroquine Phosphate (CP) is an antiviral drug used for treatment of COVID-19. It is released into wastewater and eventually contaminates natural water. This study reports an effective homogeneous catalysis way for CP degradation by the 2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl (TEMPO) enhanced persulfate (PDS) activation under UVB-LEDs irradiation at 305 nm. TEMPO at a low concentration (0.1 μM) enhanced CP degradation in UV₃₀₅/PDS process in deionized water at different pHs, in different anions and different molecular weight dissolved organic matter solutions and in real surface water. The enhancement was verified to be attributed to the electron shuttle role of TEMPO, which promoted the yield of SO₄ ^•- by enhancing electron donating capacity of the reacting system. The degradation products of CP and their acute toxicities suggested that UV₃₀₅/PDS/TEMPO process has better performance on CP detoxification than UV₃₀₅/PDS process. This study provides a new way to tackle the challenge of pharmaceutical pollutions in homogeneous photocatalysis process for natural water and sewage restoration.

Diamond surface engineering for molecular sensing with nitrogen-vacancy centers

Quantum sensing using optically addressable atomic-scale defects, such as the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond, provides new opportunities for sensitive and highly localized characterization of chemical functionality. Notably, near-surface defects facilitate detection of the minute magnetic fields generated by nuclear or electron spins outside of the diamond crystal, such as those in chemisorbed and physisorbed molecules. However, the promise of NV centers is hindered by a severe degradation of critical sensor properties, namely charge stability and spin coherence, near surfaces (< ca. 10 nm deep). Moreover, applications in the chemical sciences require methods for covalent bonding of target molecules to diamond with robust control over density, orientation, and binding configuration. This forward-looking Review provides a survey of the rapidly converging fields of diamond surface science and NV-center physics, highlighting their combined potential for quantum sensing of molecules. We outline the diamond surface properties that are advantageous for NV-sensing applications, and discuss strategies to mitigate deleterious effects while simultaneously providing avenues for chemical attachment. Finally, we present an outlook on emerging applications in which the unprecedented sensitivity and spatial resolution of NV-based sensing could provide unique insight into chemically functionalized surfaces at the single-molecule level.

Excited State Magneto-Structural Correlations Related to Photoinduced Electron Spin Polarization

Photoinduced electron spin polarization (ESP) is reported in the ground state of a series of complexes consisting of an organic radical (nitronylnitroxide, NN) covalently attached to a donor-acceptor chromophore either directly or via para-phenylene bridges substituted with 0-4 methyl groups. These molecules represent a class of chromophores that undergo visible light excitation to produce an initial exchange-coupled, three-spin [bpy^•-, CAT^•+ (= semiquinone, SQ) and NN^•], charge-separated doublet ²S₁ (S = chromophore spin singlet configuration) excited state that rapidly decays by magnetic exchange-enhanced internal conversion to a ²T₁ (T = chromophore excited spin triplet configuration) state. The ²T₁ state equilibrates with chromophoric and NN radical-derived excited states, resulting in absorptive ESP of the recovered ground state, which persists for greater than a millisecond and can be measured by low-temperature time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The magnitude of the ground state ESP is found to correlate with the excited state magnetic exchange interaction between the CAT^+• and NN^• radicals, which in turn is controlled by the structure of the bridge fragment.

A Chirality-Based Quantum Leap

There is increasing interest in the study of chiral degrees of freedom occurring in matter and in electromagnetic fields. Opportunities in quantum sciences will likely exploit two main areas that are the focus of this Review: (1) recent observations of the chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect in chiral molecules and engineered nanomaterials and (2) rapidly evolving nanophotonic strategies designed to amplify chiral light-matter interactions. On the one hand, the CISS effect underpins the observation that charge transport through nanoscopic chiral structures favors a particular electronic spin orientation, resulting in large room-temperature spin polarizations. Observations of the CISS effect suggest opportunities for spin control and for the design and fabrication of room-temperature quantum devices from the bottom up, with atomic-scale precision and molecular modularity. On the other hand, chiral-optical effects that depend on both spin- and orbital-angular momentum of photons could offer key advantages in all-optical and quantum information technologies. In particular, amplification of these chiral light-matter interactions using rationally designed plasmonic and dielectric nanomaterials provide approaches to manipulate light intensity, polarization, and phase in confined nanoscale geometries. Any technology that relies on optimal charge transport, or optical control and readout, including quantum devices for logic, sensing, and storage, may benefit from chiral quantum properties. These properties can be theoretically and experimentally investigated from a quantum information perspective, which has not yet been fully developed. There are uncharted implications for the quantum sciences once chiral couplings can be engineered to control the storage, transduction, and manipulation of quantum information. This forward-looking Review provides a survey of the experimental and theoretical fundamentals of chiral-influenced quantum effects and presents a vision for their possible future roles in enabling room-temperature quantum technologies.

Modulating the Conduction Band Energies of Si Electrode Interfaces Functionalized with Monolayers of a Bay-Substituted Perylene Bisimide

The confinement of π-conjugated chromophores on silicon (Si) electrode surfaces is a powerful approach to engineer electroresponsive monolayers relevant to microelectronics, electrocatalysis, and information storage and processing. While common strategies to functionalize Si interfaces exploit molecularly dissolved building blocks, only a handful number of studies have leveraged the structure-function relationships of π-aggregates to tune the electronic structures of hybrid monolayers at Si interfaces. Herein, we show that the semiconducting properties of n-type monolayers constructed on Si electrodes are intimately correlated to the initial aggregation state of π-conjugated chromophore precursors derived from bay-substituted perylene bisimide (PBI) units. Specifically, our study unravels that for n-type monolayers engineered using PBI π-aggregates, the cathodic reduction potentials required to inject negative charge carriers into the conduction bands can be stabilized by 295 mV through reversible switching of the maximum anodic potential (MAP) that is applied during the oxidative cycles (+0.5 or +1.5 V vs Ag/AgCl). This redox-assisted stabilization effect is not observed with n-type monolayers derived from molecularly dissolved PBI cores and monolayers featuring a low surface density of the redox-active probes. These findings unequivocally point to the crucial role played by PBI π-aggregates in modulating the conduction band energies of n-type monolayers where a high MAP of +1.5 V enables the formation of electronic trap states that facilitate electron injection when sweeping back to cathodic potentials. Because the structure-function relationships of PBI π-aggregates are shown to modulate the semiconducting properties of hybrid n-type monolayers constructed at Si interfaces, our results hold promising opportunities to develop redox-switchable monolayers for engineering nonvolatile electronic memory devices.

Photogenerated Spin-Correlated Radical Pairs: From Photosynthetic Energy Transduction to Quantum Information Science

More than a half century ago, the NMR spectra of diamagnetic products resulting from radical pair reactions were observed to have strongly enhanced absorptive and emissive resonances. At the same time, photogenerated radical pairs were discovered to exhibit unusual electron paramagnetic resonance spectra that also had such resonances. These non-Boltzmann, spin-polarized spectra were observed in both chemical systems as well as in photosynthetic reaction center proteins following photodriven charge separation. Subsequent studies of these phenomena led to a variety of chemical electron donor-acceptor model systems that provided a broad understanding of the spin dynamics responsible for these spectra. When the distance between the two radicals is restricted, these observations result from the formation of spin-correlated radical pairs (SCRPs) in which the spin-spin exchange and dipolar interactions between the two unpaired spins play an important role in the spin dynamics. Early on, it was recognized that SCRPs photogenerated by ultrafast electron transfer are entangled spin pairs created in a well-defined spin state. These SCRPs can serve as spin qubit pairs (SQPs), whose spin dynamics can be manipulated to study a wide variety of quantum phenomena intrinsic to the field of quantum information science. This Perspective highlights the role of SCRPs as SQPs, gives examples of possible quantum manipulations using SQPs, and provides some thoughts on future directions.
