An All-Metal Aromatic Sandwich Complex [Sb3Au3Sb3]3–

Insight into magnetically induced ring currents and photophysics of six-porphyrin nanorings

The series of nanorings based on Zn-porphyrins and tetraoxa-isophlorins in different oxidation states (Q = 0, 2+, 4+, 6+) have been studied studied computationally at density functional theory level (DFT) using BHandHLYP functional combined with def2-SVP basis sets. Magnetically induced ring currents of nanorings have been calculated using the GIMIC method and the Ampère-Maxwell integration scheme. Ring current calculations show that neutral nanorings sustain equal diatropic and paratropic currents of 8 nA T-1, resulting in zero net ring current strengths. The charged nanorings sustain strong ring currents with tropicity depending on the oxidation state Q. Among the considered nanorings, the nanoring composed of 6 isophlorins c-Iso66+ is the most aromatic with a ring current of IGIMIC = 81.6 nA T-1. The structure c-P62+ with a ring current of IGIMIC = 54.9 nA T-1 can be considered as the most aromatic among the synthesized porphyrin nanorings. Spin-orbit coupling matrix elements, oscillator strengths, and excitation energies calculated at the CAM-B3LYP/def2-SVP level of theory were used to estimate rate constants for radiative and nonradiative processes. The algorithm based on X-H approximation were used to calculate the internal conversion rates (kIC). The main channel for the deactivation of the excitation energy in the studied nanorings is the process of internal conversion. The deactivation of excited energy occurs due to the vibrations of certain groups of C-H bonds in the nanorings. The nanoring c-Iso6 has magnetically allowed low-lying transitions that contributes significantly to the paratropic ring current, resulting in strong local antiaromaticity in the tetraoxa-isophlorin units.

Extension and Fusion of Cyclic Polyantimony Units

The synthesis and characterization of a series of polyantimony anionic clusters are reported. The products [(NbCp)2Sb10]2-, [MSb13]3- (M = Ru/Fe), and [MSb15]3- (M = Ru/Fe) were isolated as either K(18-crown-6) or K([2.2.2]-crypt) salts. The Sb10 ring contained in the [(NbCp)2Sb10]2- cluster can be viewed as an extension of two envelope-like cyclo-Sb5 units and represents by far the largest monocyclic all-antimony species. The clusters [MSb13]3- and [MSb15]3- (M = Ru/Fe) illustrate the variability of crown-like Sb8 ring motifs and reveal the fusion of different antimony fragments featuring unique Sb-Sb chain-like units. The reported synthetic approaches involve the fabrication of a variety of distinctive polyantimony anionic clusters, enhancing our understanding of the coordination chemistry of heavier group 15 elements.

Advances for Triangular and Sandwich-Shaped All-Metal Aromatics

Much experimental work has been contributed to all-metal σ, π and δ-aromaticity among transition metals, semimetallics and other metals in the past two decades. Before our focused investigations on the properties of triangular and sandwich-shaped all-metal aromatics, A. I. Boldyrev presented general discussions on the concepts of all-metal σ-aromaticity and σ-antiaromaticity for metallo-clusters. Schleyer illustrated that Nucleus-Independent Chemical Shifts (NICS) were among the most authoritative criteria for aromaticity. Ugalde discussed the earlier developments of all-metal aromatic compounds with all possible shapes. Besides the theoretical predictions, many stable all-metal aromatic trinuclear clusters have been isolated as the metallic analogues of either the σ-aromatic molecule's [H3]+ ion or the π-aromatic molecule's [C3H3]+ ion. Different from Hoffman's opinion on all-metal aromaticity, triangular all-metal aromatics were found to hold great potential in applications in coordination chemistry, catalysis, and material science. Triangular all-metal aromatics, which were theoretically proved to conform to the Hückel (4n + 2) rule and possess the smallest aromatic ring, could also play roles as stable ligands during the formation of all-metal sandwiches. The triangular and sandwich-shaped all-metal aromatics have not yet been specifically summarized despite their diversity of existence, puissant developments and various interesting applications. These findings are different from the public opinion that all-metal aromatics would be limited to further applications due to their overstated difficulties in synthesis and uncertain stabilities. Our review will specifically focus on the summarization of theoretical predictions, feasible syntheses and isolations, and multiple applications of triangular and sandwich shaped all-metal aromatics. The appropriateness and necessities of this review will emphasize and disseminate their importance and applications forcefully and in a timely manner.

An all-metal fullerene: [K@Au12Sb20]5

The C60 fullerene molecule has attracted tremendous interest for its distinctive nearly spherical structure. By contrast, all-metal counterparts have been elusive: Fullerene-like clusters composed of noncarbon elements typically suffer from instability, resulting in more compact geometries that require multiple embedded atoms or external ligands for stabilization. In this work, we present the synthesis of an all-metal fullerene cluster, [K@Au12Sb20]5-, using a wet-chemistry method. The cluster's structure was determined by single crystal x-ray diffraction, which revealed a fullerene framework consisting of 20 antimony atoms. Theoretical calculations further indicate that this distinct cluster exhibits aromatic behavior.

The s-p Nonhybrid Nature Causes Adaptive Superatomic States of Bismuth Clusters

We report a joint experimental and theoretical study on the stability and reactivity of Bin + (n=5-33) clusters. The alternating odd-even effect on the reaction rates of Bin + clusters with NO is observed, and Bi7 + finds the most inertness. First-principles calculation results reveal that the lowest energy structures of Bi6-9 + exhibit quasi-spherical geometry pertaining to the jellium shell model; however, the Bin + (n≥10) clusters adopt assembly structures. The prominent stability of Bi7 + is associated with its highly symmetric structure and superatomic states with a magic number of 34e closed shell. For the first time, we demonstrate that the unique s-p nonhybrid feature in bismuth rationalizes the stability of Bi6-9 + clusters within the jellium model, by filling the 6s electrons into the superatomic orbitals (forming "s-band"). Interestingly, the stability of 18e "s-band" coincides with the compact structure for Bin + at n≤9 but assembly structures for n≥10, showing an accommodation of the s electrons to the geometric structure. The atomic p-orbitals also allow to form superatomic orbitals at higher energy levels, contributing to the preferable structures of tridentate binding units. We illustrate the s-p nonhybrid nature accommodates the structure and superatomic states of bismuth clusters.

Theoretical Exploration of Peculiar Sandwich-Type Clusters Formed by the Coordination of E92- (E = Si, Ge, Sn) Zintl Clusters: Structural Properties, Active Sites, and Hydrogen Storage

A peculiar heterogeneous metal sandwich fragment {(Ge₉)₂[η⁶-Ge(PdPPh₃)₃]}^4- anion cluster was synthesized for the first time by Xu et al. (Xu, H. L.; Tkachenko, N. V.; Wang, Z. C.; Chen, W. X.; Qiao, L.; Munoz-Castro, A.; Boldyrev, A. I.; Sun, Z. M. Nat. Commun.2020, 11, 5286). In this work, novel analogous sandwich compounds ({(E₉)₂[η⁶-E(PdPH₃)₃]}^4- (E = Si (1), Ge (2), Sn (3)) were studied using quantum chemical calculations and wave function analysis to determine the geometry, bonding nature, aromaticity, active sites, and hydrogen storage. Structural analysis revealed that the clusters were compounds formed by the coordination of two E₉^2- (E = Si, Ge, Sn) Zintl clusters with a central E@Pd₃ (E = Si, Ge, Sn) interlayer. The steric hindrance at both ends is small, facilitating facile attachment to other molecules. The valence states of the central atom E (E = Si, Ge, Sn) are close to zero, indicating that they are stable novel heterometallic sandwich compounds, and the Zintl ligands at both ends are negative, thus they can react with Lewis acids. Bonding analysis showed that the E₉^2- (E = Si, Ge, Sn) cluster has a delocalized framework bonding mode. For aromaticity analysis, we used AdNDP, ELF, LOL, ICSS, and NICS to qualitatively and quantitatively clarify that these clusters possess the characteristics of overall delocalization, σ aromaticity, and remarkable stability. By analyzing the unique structure and predicting the reaction sites, we concluded that the E₉^2- ligand reacts with Lewis acids. Finally, through the adsorption of hydrogen molecules, the average adsorption energies of 1-3 were 0.387, 0.374, and 0.325 eV per H₂ molecule, respectively, meeting the physical adsorption standard, with the adsorption effect of 3 being slightly more superior than that of 1 and 2. Our study represents a substantial step forward in the study of high-density materials for volumetric H₂ storage applications.

Inorganic Ferrocene Analogue [Fe(P4)2]2

Inorganic metallocene derivatives containing only cyclo-P_n ligands have been targeted for more than 20 years, but their syntheses have never been achieved by pursuing the conventional route of using P₄ phosphorus except for the generation of [Ti(η⁵-P₅)₂]^2-. Herein, we report a facile one-step method for the synthesis of the homoleptic iron complex [Fe(P₄)₂]^2- by the Zintl-phase-type precursor KP. ³¹P NMR analyses indicate that upon dissolving the KP phase in ethylenediamine P₄^2- was generated only in the presence of 2,2,2-crypt. The amounts of cation-sequestering agents, the type of iron precursor, and their consuming ratio have a decisive impact on the yield of [Fe(P₄)₂]^2-. Both the Fe^II and the Fe^III precursors can oxidize P₄^2- to give a concomitant product [(P₇)Fe(P₄)]^3-, which can be partially inhibited by the addition of potassium to produce relatively pure crystalline [K(2,2,2-crypt)]₂[Fe(P₄)₂].

An unexpected all-metal aromatic tetranuclear silver cluster in human copper chaperone Atox1

Metal clusters, such as iron–sulfur clusters, play key roles in sustaining life and are intimately involved in the functions of metalloproteins. Herein we report the formation and crystal structure of a planar square tetranuclear silver cluster when silver ions were mixed with human copper chaperone Atox1. Quantum chemical studies reveal that two Ag 5s¹ electrons in the tetranuclear silver cluster fully occupy the one bonding molecular orbital, with the assumption that this Ag₄ cluster is Ag₄²⁺, leading to extensive electron delocalization over the planar square and significant stabilization. This bonding pattern of the tetranuclear silver cluster represents an aromatic all-metal structure that follows a 4n + 2 electron counting rule (n = 0). This is the first time an all-metal aromatic silver cluster was observed in a protein.

Electronic structure and bonding in endohedral Zintl clusters

Endohedral Zintl clusters-multi-metallic anionic molecules in which a d-block or f-block metal atom is enclosed by p-block (semi)metal atoms-are very topical in contemporary inorganic chemistry. Not only do they provide insight into the embryonic states of intermetallic compounds and show promise in catalytic applications, they also shed light on the nature of chemical bonding between metal atoms. Over the past two decades, a plethora of endohedral Zintl clusters have been synthesized, revealing a fascinating diversity of molecular architectures. Many different perspectives on the bonding in them have emerged in the literature, sometimes complementary and sometimes conflicting, and there has been no concerted effort to classify the entire family based on a small number of unifying principles. A closer look, however, reveals distinct patterns in structure and bonding that reflect the extent to which valence electrons are shared between the endohedral atom and the cluster shell. We show that there is a much more uniform relationship between the total valence electron count and the structure and bonding patterns of these clusters than previously anticipated. All of the p-block (semi)metal shells can be placed on a ladder of total valence electron count that ranges between 4n+2 (closo deltahedra), 5n (closed, three-bonded polyhedra) and 6n (crown-like structures). Although some structural isomerism can occur for a given electron count, the presence of a central metal cation imposes a preference for rather regular and approximately spherical structures which maximise electrostatic interactions between the metal and the shell. In cases where the endohedral metal has relatively accessible valence electrons (from the d or f shells), it can also contribute its valence electrons to the total electron count of the cluster shell, raising the effective electron count and often altering the structural preferences. The electronic situation in any given cluster is considered from different perspectives, some more physical and some more chemical, in a way that highlights the important point that, in the end, they explain the same situation. This article provides a unifying perspective of bonding that captures the structural diversity across this diverse family of multimetallic clusters.

Tetrahedral [Sb(AuMe)4 ]3- Occurring in Multimetallic Cluster Syntheses: About the Structure-Directing Role of Methyl Groups

The anion of [K(crypt‐222)]₃[Sb(AuMe)₄]⋅py (1; crypt‐222=4,7,13,16,21,24‐hexaoxa‐1,10‐diazabicyclo[8.8.8]hexacosane; py=pyridine) represents a rare example of a homoleptic heavy p‐block metal atom being surrounded by four free‐standing transition metal complex fragments, and the third example for a corresponding Sb compound. In contrast to all reported complexes of this type, the transition metal atoms possess twofold coordination only, hence the complex as a whole does not exhibit significant steric shielding or further linkage of the metal atoms. This is reflected in a high flexibility, as confirmed by slight deviations from a tetrahedral coordination of the Sb atom in the crystal and soft vibrational modes. An alternative pyramidal conformer, observed for a related arsenic compound with terminal phosphine ligands, is apparently disfavored owing to electron correlation effects. The compound is formed in a reaction that in another solvent or at other reactant concentrations yields salts of ternary cluster anions. By a combined experimental and theoretical study of different reaction conditions and previously unidentified side‐products, we provide insight into multimetallic cluster synthesis reactions.

Photoelectric properties of aromatic triangular tri-palladium complexes and their catalytic applications in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction

The photoelectric properties and catalytic activities of substituted triphenylphosphine and sulfur/selenium ligand supported aromatic triangular tri-palladium complexes 1-4, abbreviated as [Pd₃]⁺, were investigated. The cyclic voltammogram of [Pd₃]⁺ in CH₃CN-ⁿBu₄NPF₆ showed a single quasi-reversible wave which was consistent with their robust property and provided preliminary proof for their electron transfer processes in catalysis. With excitation at 267 nm, [Pd₃]⁺ exhibited strong ratiometric fluorescence at 550 and 780 nm at a temperature gradient from 77 K to 287 K. These peculiar triangular tri-palladium complexes showed excellent catalytic activities and exclusive reactivity with aryl iodides over the other halogenated aromatics in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction. The electronic and steric hindrance effects of substituents on the aryl iodides and aryl boronic acids including heteroaromatics like pyridine, pyrazine and thiophenes were explored and most substrates achieved up to 99% of yields. (2-[1,1'-Biphenyl]-2-ylbenzothiazole) which was analogous to the selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors was also synthesized with our tri-palladium catalyst and gave good isolated yield (94%). The study of the catalytic process revealed that the mechanism of the reaction may involve the replacement of the sulphur ligand on [Pd₃]⁺ by iodine from aryl iodides, which was beneficial for the matching of C-I bond energy.

Precise Implantation of an Archimedean Ag@Cu12 Cuboctahedron into a Platonic Cu4Bis(diphenylphosphino)hexane6 Tetrahedron

Precision loading of nanoclusters in confined spaces, which has been enthusiastically pursued in the scientific realm, is still associated with some mysteries of "how", "when", and "why". Here, we isolated two similar heterometallic cluster-in-cage compounds, [Ag@Cu₁₂S₈@Cu₄(dpph)₆]X (X = OH, SD/AgCu16a and X = PF₆, SD/AgCu16b; SD = SunDi), by use of an antigalvanic reaction between organometallic [PhC≡CCu]_n and Ph₃CSH with elemental silver. Both compounds are formed by fitting an Archimedean Ag@Cu₁₂ cuboctahedral cluster into a Platonic Cu₄(dpph)₆ tetrahedral cage [dpph = bis(diphenylphosphino)hexane]. The Ag@Cu₁₂ cluster is a hollow cuboctahedral Cu₁₂ cage filled with a central Ag^I atom, and all eight triangular faces of the Ag@Cu₁₂ cuboctahedron are triply capped by eight S^2- ions, four of which in a tetrahedral array further internally pillar four Cu vertices of the outer Cu₄(dpph)₆ tetrahedron, fixing the cluster in the cage. Both compounds can be deemed as molecular fragments excised from porous nanomaterials filled with discrete nanoclusters, thus providing more details for understanding the confined growth of atomically precise nanoclusters. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) reveals that the AgCu₁₆ cluster is quite stable in CH₂Cl₂ and can stepwise lose dpph ligand in the gas phase under increased collision energy. This work not only presents a precise aggregation of metal atoms in a confined cavity to form a cluster-in-cage compound but also provides deep insights into the binding and geometry matching between clusters and cages in one entity.

Multinuclear Ag Clusters Sandwiched by Pt Complex Units: Fluxional Behavior and Chiral-at-Cluster Photoluminescence

Multinuclear Ag clusters sandwiched by Pt complex units were synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR studies. The sandwich-shaped multinuclear Ag complexes showed two different types of fluxional behavior in solution: rapid slippage of Pt complex units on the Ag₃ core and a reversible demetalation-metalation reaction by the treatment with Cl anion and Ag ion, respectively. The Ag₂ complex obtained by demetalation reaction from the Ag₃ complex displayed U to Z isomerization. These multinuclear Ag complexes showed strong photoluminescence whose properties depended on the existence of Pt→Ag dative bonds. The Ag₃ complex, identified to be "chiral-at-cluster", was optically resolved by the formation of a diastereomeric salt with a chiral anion. The enantiomers show circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties which is unprecedented for compounds based on a chiral sandwich structure. Theoretical calculations allow to understand their structural features and photophysical properties.

Substantial π-aromaticity in the anionic heavy-metal cluster [Th@Bi12]4

The concept of aromaticity was originally defined as a property of unsaturated, cyclic planar organic molecules like benzene, which gain stability by the inherent delocalization of 4n + 2 π-electrons over the ring atoms. Since then, π-aromaticity has been observed for a large variety of organic and inorganic non-metal compounds, yet, for molecules consisting only of metal atoms, it has remained restricted to systems with three to five atoms. Here, we present the straightforward synthesis of a metal 12-ring that exhibits 2π-aromaticity and has a ring current much stronger than that of benzene (6π) and equivalent to that of porphine (26π), despite these organic molecules having (much) larger numbers of π-electrons. Highly reducing reaction conditions allowed access to the heterometallic anion [Th@Bi₁₂]^4-, with interstitial Th⁴⁺ stabilizing a Bi₁₂^8- moiety. Our results show that it is possible to design and generate substantial π-aromaticity in large metal rings, and we hope that such π-aromatic heavy-metal cycles will eventually find use in cluster-based reactions.

Unprecedented icosahedral clusters built of polyantimony: from single [Ni0.5@{Sb6Ni6(CO)8}]4− and [Ni@{Sb7Ni5(CO)6}]3− to the Sb84−-linked dimer [(Sb8){Sb7Ni5(CO)4}2]6−

First icosahedral clusters built of polyantimony were prepared from the reactions of K2ZnSb and Ni(CO)2(PPh3)2. Sb84−-linked dimer provides a new way of thinking for the synthesis of hybrid clusters datively coordinated by polydentate Zintl anions.

A sandwich-type cluster containing Ge@Pd3 planar fragment flanked by aromatic nonagermanide caps

Sandwich-type clusters with the planar fragment containing a heterometallic sheet have remained elusive. In this work, we introduce the [K(2,2,2-crypt)]4{(Ge9)2[η6-Ge(PdPPh3)3]} complex that contains a heterometallic sandwich fragment. The title compound is structurally characterized by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which reveals the presence of an unusual heteroatomic metal planar fragment Ge@Pd3. The planar fragment contains a rare formal zerovalent germanium core and a peculiar bonding mode of sp2-Ge@(PdPPh3)3 trigonal planar structure, whereas the nonagermanide fragments act as capping ligands. The chemical bonding pattern of the planar fragment consists of three 2c-2e Pd-Ge σ-bonds attaching Pd atoms to the core Ge atom, while the binding between the planar fragment and the aromatic Ge9 ligands is provided by six 2c-2e Pd-Ge σ-bonds and two delocalized 4c-2e σ-bonds. The synthesized cluster represents a rare example of a sandwich compound with the heteroatomic metal planar fragment and inorganic aromatic capping ligands.

Stabilizing a metalloid {Zn12} unit within a polymetallide environment in [K2Zn20Bi16]6

The access to molecules comprising direct Zn–Zn bonds has become very topical in recent years for various reasons. Low-valent organozinc compounds show remarkable reactivities, and larger Zn–Zn-bonded gas-phase species exhibit a very unusual coexistence of insulating and metallic properties. However, as Zn atoms do not show a high tendency to form clusters in condensed phases, synthetic approaches for generating purely inorganic metalloid Zn_x units under ambient conditions have been lacking so far. Here we show that the reaction of a highly reductive solid with the nominal composition K₅Ga₂Bi₄ with ZnPh₂ at room temperature yields the heterometallic cluster anion [K₂Zn₂₀Bi₁₆]^6–. A 24-atom polymetallide ring embeds a metalloid {Zn₁₂} unit. Density functional theory calculations reveal multicenter bonding, an essentially zero-valent situation in the cluster center, and weak aromaticity. The heterometallic character, the notable electron-delocalization, and the uncommon nano-architecture points at a high potential for nano-heterocatalysis.

Low-valent zinc clusters, though exceedingly rare, are appealing synthetic targets because there is evidence that they may show unconventional chemical and physical behavior. Here, the authors obtain a large heterometallic zinc-bismuth cluster anion and discover that it bears a metalloid {Zn₁₂} core with four-center bonding and essentially zero-valent character.

Atom Exchange Versus Reconstruction: (Gex As4-x )x- (x=2, 3) as Building Blocks for the Supertetrahedral Zintl Cluster [Au6 (Ge3 As)(Ge2 As2 )3 ]3

The Zintl anion (Ge2 As2 )2- represents an isostructural and isoelectronic binary counterpart of yellow arsenic, yet without being studied with the same intensity so far. Upon introducing [(PPh3 )AuMe] into the 1,2-diaminoethane (en) solution of (Ge2 As2 )2- , the heterometallic cluster anion [Au6 (Ge3 As)(Ge2 As2 )3 ]3- is obtained as its salt [K(crypt-222)]3 [Au6 (Ge3 As)(Ge2 As2 )3 ]⋅en⋅2 tol (1). The anion represents a rare example of a superpolyhedral Zintl cluster, and it comprises the largest number of Au atoms relative to main group (semi)metal atoms in such clusters. The overall supertetrahedral structure is based on a (non-bonding) octahedron of six Au atoms that is face-capped by four (Gex As4-x )x- (x=2, 3) units. The Au atoms bind to four main group atoms in a rectangular manner, and this way hold the four units together to form this unprecedented architecture. The presence of one (Ge3 As)3- unit besides three (Ge2 As2 )2- units as a consequence of an exchange reaction in solution was verified by detailed quantum chemical (DFT) calculations, which ruled out all other compositions besides [Au6 (Ge3 As)(Ge2 As2 )3 ]3- . Reactions of the heavier homologues (Tt2 Pn2 )2- (Tt=Sn, Pb; Pn=Sb, Bi) did not yield clusters corresponding to that in 1, but dimers of ternary nine-vertex clusters, {[AuTt5 Pn3 ]2 }4- (in 2-4; Tt/Pn=Sn/Sb, Sn/Bi, Pb/Sb), since the underlying pseudo-tetrahedral units comprising heavier atoms do not tend to undergo the said exchange reactions as readily as (Ge2 As2 )2- , according to the DFT calculations.

A family of lead clusters with precious metal cores

Gold nanoparticles have been used for centuries, both for decoration and in medical applications. More recently, many of the major advances in cluster chemistry have involved well-defined clusters containing tens or hundreds of atoms, either with or without a ligand shell. In this paper we report the synthesis of two gold/lead clusters, [Au₈Pb₃₃]⁶⁻ and [Au₁₂Pb₄₄]⁸⁻, both of which contain nido [Au@Pb₁₁]³⁻ icosahedra surrounding a core of Au atoms. Analogues of these large clusters are not found in the corresponding Ag chemistry: instead, the Ag-centered nido icosahedron, [Ag@Pb₁₁]³⁻, is the only isolated product. The structural chemistry, along with the mass spectrometry which shows the existence of [Au₂Pb₁₁]²⁻ but not [Ag₂Pb₁₁]²⁻, leads us to propose that the former species is the key intermediate in the growth of the larger clusters. Density functional theory indicates that secondary π-type interactions between the [Au@Pb₁₁]³⁻ ligands and the gold core play a significant part in stabilizing the larger clusters.

Many Zintl ions with a single endohedrally encapsulated transition metal ion are known, but relatively few where clusters of two or more metals are present. Here, the authors report the synthesis and characterization of two clusters, [Au₈Pb₃₃]⁶⁻ and [Au₁₂Pb₄₄]¹²⁻, which contain Au₈ and Au₁₂ cores surrounded by Pb shells.

A Stable Cyclic (R2 SnAu)3 Anion Having In-Plane σ-Möbius Aromaticity

A cyclic (R₂ SnAu)₃ anion (3^- , R₂ Sn=2,2,5,5-tetrakis(trimethylsilyl)-1-stannacyclopentane-1,1-diyl) has been synthesized as a stable blue salt with K⁺ (THF)₆ through the reaction of stable dialkylstannylene 1 with R'₃ PAuCl (R'=Et, Ph) followed by the reduction with KC₈ . Crystallographic and NMR analysis shows that the six-membered (SnAu)₃ ring of 3^- is planar and highly symmetric with an equal distance of six Au-Sn bonds. A UV/Vis spectrum of 3^- in hexane reveals an intense absorption maximum at 598 nm. While cyclic Au₃ ^- with four valence electrons is known as unstable anti-aromatic anion, 3^- with three divalent tin ligands is stable σ aromatic anion with an unprecedented Möbius orbital array as predicted by the perturbation MO and CCSD analysis of 3^- .

Frontiers in the solution-phase chemistry of homoatomic group 15 Zintl clusters

Recent developments in the solution-phase chemistry of polypnictogen Zintl cluster are discussed, including the preparation of new clusters, wet synthetic methods, and their subsequent small molecule activations.

Is the pericyclic transition structure of aza-Diels-Alder reaction aromatic?

The notion of aromaticity is an elusive concept, typically delineated as an electron delocalization pattern within a cyclic structure, and is characterized by unusual stability, reactivity, and other properties. Recently, the aromatic concept has been extended to inorganic molecules and saturated systems. In our work, the so-called pericyclic transition state structures (TSs) involved in aza-Diels-Alder reactions are investigated. Interestingly, geometries and energy barriers evidence that these reactions are highly energetic and are extremely asynchronous. Additionally the localized orbital locator, ELF and QTAIM topological analyses have proven that at least one pair of atoms is not bound at the TS configuration. Moreover, HOMA and PDI indexes show that these TSs where aromaticity is not important. Therefore, these results provoke us to rule out the aromatic character of these so-called pericyclic TSs structures.

[(η3-Bi3)2(IrCO)6(μ4-Bi)3]3−: a new archetype of a 15-vertex deltahedral hybrid from Bixx−-coordination aggregation of cationic [IrCO]+ units

The first Zintl-deltahedral metal carbonyl hybrid [(η³-Bi₃)₂(IrCO)₆(μ₄-Bi)₃]³⁻ was obtained by a new synthetic methodology, namely the Bi_x^x−-coordination aggregation of [Ir(CO)]⁺ to trigonal prismatic [Ir(CO)]₆⁶⁺.

Sandwich-type Na6B7- and Na8B7+ clusters: charge-transfer complexes, four-fold π/σ aromaticity, and dynamic fluxionality

Boron-based clusters possess unusual structural and bonding properties owing to boron's electron-deficiency. We report on the theoretical prediction of two binary B-Na clusters, Na6B7- and Na8B7+, which assume unique sandwich geometries, featuring a perfectly planar B7 wheel and two triangular Na3 or quasi-tetrahedral Na4 ligands. Despite distinct electronegativities of B/Na, the B-Na clusters do not form typical salts. Both sandwich species are dynamically fluxional at 300 K and beyond. Two dynamic modes are observed: an in-plane rotation of the B7 wheel versus twisting of the two Na3/Na4 ligands. Their energy barriers are negligibly small. Natural bond orbital calculations show that the clusters are charge-transfer complexes [Na3]+[B7]3-[Na3]+ and [Na4]2+[B7]3-[Na4]2+, respectively. Chemical bonding analyses indicate that the B7 wheel in the clusters has 6π/6σ double aromaticity and the Na3/Na4 ligands are 2σ aromatic, collectively leading to four-fold π/σ aromaticity. The quasi-tetrahedral Na4 ligand is the simplest example of spherical aromaticity and can also be considered a superatom. Interlayer bonding in the sandwiches is greater than 20 eV, due to electrostatics, which should not be confused with weakly bound species. Four-fold π/σ aromaticity and robust interlayer ionic bonding offer uniform and dilute electron clouds over the sandwiches, facilitating their dual-mode dynamic fluxionality. The Na8B7+ cluster is also a superalkali cation.

Chemical Bonding in Transition Metal Nitride Os3N3 + Cluster: 6π Inorganic Benzene and δ2δ*1δ*1 Aromaticity

Inorganic benzene-like clusters with a planar hexagonal ring are of interest in chemistry, as are new types of aromaticity, multifold aromaticity, and in particular δ aromaticity beyond carbon-based organic systems. Here we report on a computational study of chemical bonding in a binary Os₃N₃ ⁺ D _3h (⁷A₂″) cluster. This transition metal nitride cluster assumes a perfectly planar, heteroatomic, hexagonal geometry. An array of quantum chemistry tools is exploited to elucidate the electronic, structural, and bonding properties of D _3h Os₃N₃ ⁺ cluster, which include canonical molecular orbitals, adaptive natural density partitioning, natural bond orbital analysis, orbital composition calculations, and nucleus-independent chemical shifts. The computational data collectively support the bonding picture of 2-fold π/δ aromaticity: 6π electrons delocalized over all Os/N centers versus an Os-based 4δ framework in the unique δ²δ*¹δ*¹ configuration. The π sextet renders this heteroatomic cluster an inorganic analog of benzene. Transition metal-based inorganic benzenes are unknown in the literature, to our knowledge. The triplet 4δ electron-counting is a rare case of d-orbital aromaticity and δ-aromaticity, following the reversed 4n Hückel rule for aromaticity in a triplet system. This bonding picture is concrete, differing fundamentally from a recent study on the relevant system.

Recent developments in Zintl cluster chemistry

Zintl anions have been known for more than a century and were studied systematically by Eduard Zintl in the 1930s. Since then, they have been investigated for their interesting structures, bonding, and physical properties - in solid Zintl phases, in solvate salts, and in solution. While their popularity remained limited for several decades, Zintl ion chemistry has recently experienced a renaissance as a result of breakthroughs regarding their modifications into multinary anions that include transition metal atoms, their organic derivatization, and their oxidative linkage. A plethora of reports from the past two decades - demonstrating the ever growing variety of Zintl ion chemistry - have been since summarized in several review articles. Herein, we intend to present the most recent developments, which also shed light on Zintl anions and clusters as useful precursors for materials development, as illustrated by one recent example.

The cyclo-Sb6 ring in the [Sb6(RuCp*)2]2− ion

The [Sb₆(RuCp*)₂]²⁻ anion represents the first example of a Zintl cluster with a boat-like cyclo-Sb₆ subunit and the first ruthenium polyantimonide complex. The anion is dynamic in solution and fragments in the gas phase. Structural parameters and DFT calculations suggest the possibility of SbSb double bond character.

Eclipsed- and Staggered-[Ge18Pd3{EiPr3}6]2- (E = Si, Sn): Positional Isomerism in Deltahedral Zintl Clusters

We report the synthesis and characterization of the cluster anions [Ge₁₈Pd₃{SiⁱPr₃}₆]^2- (1) with a core of face-fused twinned icosahedra, Ge₁₈Pd₃, and two sets of three ⁱPr₃Si-substituents positioned in "eclipsed" geometry. The new anion is a positional isomer of the recently reported "staggered" stannyl-ligated counterpart [Ge₁₈Pd₃{SnⁱPr₃}₆]^2- (2), showing the possibility to find such positional isomerism in Zintl clusters. Both anions are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, ¹H and ¹³C NMR, and negative-ion ESI-MS. Using relativistic DFT calculations, we elucidate and discuss the reasons for the different positioning of the ligands in the stannyl- and silyl-functionalized species.
