Subcomponent Flexibility Enables Conversion between D4-Symmetric CdII8L8 and T-Symmetric CdII4L4 Assemblies

Thermal-Sensitive Supramolecular Coordination Complex Formed by Orthogonal Metal Coordination and Host-Guest Interactions for an Electrical Thermometer

Supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) are popular for their structural diversity and functional adaptability, which make them suitable for a wide range of applications. Photophysical and mechanical performance of SCCs are the most attractive characteristics, yet their ionically conductive behavior and potential in electrical sensing have been rarely investigated. This study reports a well-designed SCC that integrates orthogonal metal coordination and host-guest interactions to achieve sensitive electrical thermal sensing. Owing to the thermodynamic nature of the host-guest interaction, the SCC encounters thermally induced disassembly, leading to significantly enhanced ion mobility and thus allowing for the precise detection of minor temperature variation. The SCC-based thermometer is then fabricated with the assistance of 3D printing and demonstrates good accuracy and reliability in monitoring human skin temperature and real-time temperature changes of mouse during the whole anesthesia and recovery process. Our findings provide an innovative strategy for developing electrical thermometers and expand the current application scope of SCCs in electrical sensing.

Non-Templated Assembly of D5h-Symmetric Pd5L10 Rings by Precise Ligand Angle Adjustment

We report a series of Pd(II)nL2n coordination rings for which nuclearity is controlled by the binding angle of the corresponding bis-monodentate bridging ligands. Judicious choice of the angle within a family of rather rigid ligands allowed for the first-time to synthesize a homoleptic five-membered Pd5L10 ring that does not require any template to form. We demonstrate that control over the ring size is maintained both in the solid-, solution-, and gas-phase. Two X-ray structures of five-membered rings from ligands with ideal angles (yielding a perfect pentagonal ring) vs. suboptimal angles (resulting in a highly distorted structure) illustrate the importance of the correct ligand geometry. A mathematical model for estimating the expected ring size based on the ligand angle was derived and DFT computations show that ring-strain is the major factor determining the assembly outcome.

Recent progress in iodine capture by macrocycles and cages

The effective capture of radioiodine is vital to the development of the nuclear industry and ecological environmental protection. There is, therefore, a continuously growing research exploration in various types of solid-state materials for iodine capture. During the last decade, the potential of using macrocycle and cage-based supramolecular materials in effective uptake and separation of radioactive iodine has been demonstrated. Interest in the application of these materials in iodine capture originates from their diversified porous characteristics, abundant host-guest chemistry, high iodine affinity and adsorption capacity, high stability in various environments, facile modification and functionalization, and intrinsic structural flexibility, among other attributes. Herein, recent progress in macrocycle and cage-based solid-state materials, including pure discrete macrocycles and cages, and their polymeric forms, for iodine capture is summarized and discussed with an emphasis on iodine capture capacities, mechanisms, and design strategies.

Abelairas A, Criado A, Gómez IJ, Mosquera J. Dendrimers: Exploring Their Wide Structural Variety and Applications

Dendrimers constitute a distinctive category of synthetic materials that bear resemblance to proteins in various aspects, such as discrete structural organization, globular morphology, and nanoscale dimensions. Remarkably, these attributes coexist with the capacity for facile large-scale production. Due to these advantages, the realm of dendrimers has undergone substantial advancement since their inception in the 1980s. Numerous reviews have been dedicated to elucidating this subject comprehensively, delving into the properties and applications of quintessential dendrimer varieties like PAMAM, PPI, and others. Nevertheless, the contemporary landscape of dendrimers transcends these early paradigms, witnessing the emergence of a diverse array of novel dendritic architectures in recent years. In this review, we aim to present a comprehensive panorama of the expansive domain of dendrimers. As such, our focus lies in discussing the key attributes and applications of the predominant types of dendrimers existing today. We will commence with the conventional variants and progressively delve into the more pioneering ones, including Janus, supramolecular, shape-persistent, and rotaxane dendrimers.

Dynamic Interconversion and Induced-Fit Guest Binding with Two Macrocycle-Based Coordination Cages

We report the syntheses and host-guest chemistry of two interconvertible coordination cages, Pd₂L₂ and Pd₁L₁, from a dynamic macrocycle ligand (L) and a cis-blocking (tmen)Pd(NO₃)₂ (tmen = tetramethylethylenediamine) unit (Pd). The water-soluble macrocyclic L, which can bind various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) guests in its cis-conformation, was constructed via four pyridinium bonds between two 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine [TPT] panels and two p-xylene bridges. We selectively formed each cage either by changing the reaction concentration/solvent/temperature or through induced-fit guest encapsulation, while direct assembly of L and Pd resulted in a mixture of Pd₂L₂ and Pd₁L₁ in equilibrium. X-ray structures of the free ligand and the host-guest complexes confirmed the induce-fit adaptive changes in the ligand's conformation and the cage's cavity. This work demonstrates a useful strategy for designing multistimuli-responsive supramolecular hosts by coordination self-assembly with macrocyclic ligands featuring rich conformational freedom.

Mapping the Assembly of Neutral Tetrahedral Cages Tethered by Oximido Linkers and Their Guest Encapsulation Studies

A primary criterion for the design of polyhedral metal-organic cages is the requirement of geometrically matched pairs of metal ions and ligand moieties. However, understanding the pathway it takes to reach the final polyhedral structure can provide more insights into the self-assembly process and improved design strategies. In this regard, we report two neutral tetrahedral cages with the formulas {[Pd₃(NⁱPr)₃PO]₄(L¹)₆} (1-TD) and {[Pd₃(NⁱPr)₃PO]₄(L²)₆} (2-TD) starting from the acetate-bridged cluster {[Pd₃(NⁱPr)₃PO]₂(OAc)₂(OH)}₂·2(CH₃)₂SO (HEXA-Pd) and the respective oxamide precursors (L¹H₂: [C₂(NH₂)₂O₂]) and (L²H₂: (C₂(NHMe)₂O₂]). When subtle variations in the reaction conditions were made, two new tetrameric Pd₁₂ assemblies, {[Pd₃(NⁱPr)₃PO]₄(L¹)₂(OAc)₄(OMe)₄} (1-TM) and {[Pd₃(NⁱPr)₃PO]₄(L²)₂(OAc)₄(OMe)₄} (2-TM), were obtained from the same precursors. Detailed investigations using NMR, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, and computational studies indicate that the macrocyclic complexes 1-TM and 2-TM are the reaction intermediates involved in the formation of the tetrahedral cages 1-TD and 2-TD, respectively. Moreover, the tetrahedral cages 1-TD and 2-TD exhibited intrinsic cavities of volume ∼85 ų. Guest encapsulation studies revealed that the cage 1-TD can encapsulate a wide range of guest molecules such as CH₂Cl₂, CHCl₃, CCl₄, C₆H₆, and C₆H₅F. Interestingly, 1-TD was shown to exhibit a preferential binding of C₆H₅F and C₆H₆ over other halogenated guest molecules, as determined from NMR titrations and computational studies.

Metal-organic frameworks as chemical nanoreactors for the preparation of catalytically active metal compounds

Since the emergence of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a myriad of thrilling properties and applications, in a wide range of fields, have been reported for these materials, which mainly arise from their porous nature and rich host-guest chemistry. However, other important features of MOFs that offer great potential rewards have been only barely explored. For instance, despite the fact that MOFs are suitable candidates to be used as chemical nanoreactors for the preparation, stabilization and characterization of unique functional species, that would be hardly accessible outside the functional constrained space offered by MOF channels, only very few examples have been reported so far. In particular, we outline in this feature recent advances in the use of highly robust and crystalline oxamato- and oxamidato-based MOFs as reactors for the in situ preparation of well-defined catalytically active single atom catalysts (SACS), subnanometer metal nanoclusters (SNMCs) and supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs). The robustness of selected MOFs permits the post-synthetic (PS) in situ preparation of the desired catalytically active metal species, which can be characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) taking advantage of its high crystallinity. The strategy highlighted here permits the always challenging large-scale preparation of stable and well-defined SACs, SNMCs and SCCs, exhibiting outstanding catalytic activities.

Modifying the internal substituents of self-assembled cages controls their molecular recognition and optical properties

Self-assembled Fe₄L₆ cage complexes with variable internal functions can be synthesized from a 2,7-dibromocarbazole ligand scaffold, which orients six functional groups to the cage interior. Both ethylthiomethylether and ethyldimethylamino groups can be incorporated. The cages show strong ligand-centered fluorescence emission and a broad range of guest binding properties. Coencapsulation of neutral organic guests is favored in the larger, unfunctionalized cage cavity, whereas the thioether cage has a more sterically hindered cavity that favors 1 : 1 guest binding. Binding affinities up to 10⁶ M^-1 in CH₃CN are seen. The dimethylamino cage is more complex, as the internal amines display partial protonation and can be deprotonated by amine bases. This amine cage displays affinity for a broad range of neutral organic substrates, with affinities and stoichiometries comparable to that of the similarly sized thioether cage. These species show that simple variations in ligand backbone allow variations in the number and type of functions that can be displayed towards the cavity of self-assembled hosts, which will have applications in biomimetic sensing, catalysis and molecular recognition.

Transformation networks of metal-organic cages controlled by chemical stimuli

The flexibility of biomolecules enables them to adapt and transform as a result of signals received from the external environment, expressing different functions in different contexts. In similar fashion, coordination cages can undergo stimuli-triggered transformations owing to the dynamic nature of the metal-ligand bonds that hold them together. Different types of stimuli can trigger dynamic reconfiguration of these metal-organic assemblies, to switch on or off desired functionalities. Such adaptable systems are of interest for applications in switchable catalysis, selective molecular recognition or as transformable materials. This review highlights recent advances in the transformation of cages using chemical stimuli, providing a catalogue of reported strategies to transform cages and thus allow the creation of new architectures. Firstly we focus on strategies for transformation through the introduction of new cage components, which trigger reconstitution of the initial set of components. Secondly we summarize conversions triggered by external stimuli such as guests, concentration, solvent or pH, highlighting the adaptation processes that coordination cages can undergo. Finally, systems capable of responding to multiple stimuli are described. Such systems constitute composite chemical networks with the potential for more complex behaviour. We aim to offer new perspectives on how to design transformation networks, in order to shed light on signal-driven transformation processes that lead to the preparation of new functional metal-organic architectures.

Beyond Platonic: How to Build Metal-Organic Polyhedra Capable of Binding Low-Symmetry, Information-Rich Molecular Cargoes

The field of metallosupramolecular chemistry has advanced rapidly in recent years. Much work in this area has focused on the formation of hollow self-assembled metal-organic architectures and exploration of the applications of their confined nanospaces. These discrete, soluble structures incorporate metal ions as ‘glue’ to link organic ligands together into polyhedra.Most of the architectures employed thus far have been highly symmetrical, as these have been the easiest to prepare. Such high-symmetry structures contain pseudospherical cavities, and so typically bind roughly spherical guests. Biomolecules and high-value synthetic compounds are rarely isotropic, highly-symmetrical species. To bind, sense, separate, and transform such substrates, new, lower-symmetry, metal-organic cages are needed. Herein we summarize recent approaches, which taken together form the first draft of a handbook for the design of higher-complexity, lower-symmetry, self-assembled metal-organic architectures.

Polyanionic Imido-P(V) Ligands: From Transition Metal Complexes to Coordination Driven Self-Assemblies

The chemistry of the imido-anions of the main group elements has been studied for more than three decades. The imido (NR)^- group is isoelectronic to the oxo (=O) group and can coordinate with metal ions through its lone pairs of electrons. The polyimido-P(V) anions are well explored as they resemble the phosphorus oxo moieties such as H₃ PO₄ , H₂ PO₄ ^- , HPO₄ ^2- and PO₄ ^3- species. These imido anions are typically generated using strong main group organometallic reagents such as ⁿ BuLi, Et₂ Zn, Me₃ Al and ⁿ Bu₂ Mg, etc. As a result, their coordination chemistry has been restricted to reactions in anhydrous aprotic solvents for a few main group metal ions. This account presents our findings on using certain soft transition metal such Ag(I) and Pd (II) for isolating these imido-P(V) anions as their corresponding self-assembled clusters and cages. Using the various salts of Ag(I) ions in reaction with 2-pyridyl (² Py) functionalized phosphonium salts and phosphoric triamides, we obtained the mono- and dianionic form of these imido ligands {[P(N² Py)₂ (NH² Py)₂ ]^- , [P(N² Py)₂ (NH² Py)]^- , [PO(N² Py)(NH² Py)₂ ]^2- } and derived interesting examples of tri, penta, hepta and octanuclear Ag(I) clusters. Interestingly, by using the salts of Pd (II) ions, the elusive imido-phosphate trianions of the type [(RN)₃ PO]^3- (R=^t Bu, ^c Hex, ⁱ Pr) were generated in a facile one pot reaction as their corresponding tri- and hexanuclear clusters of the type {Pd₃ [(NR)₃ PO](OAc)₃ }_n (n=1 or 2). These trianions acts as a cis-coordinated hexadentate ligand for a trinuclear Pd (II) cluster and serve as the polyhedral building units for constructing hitherto unknown family of neutral cages in tetrahedral {Pd₃ [(Nⁱ Pr)₃ PO]₄ (L)₆ } and cubic {Pd₃ [(Nⁱ Pr)₃ PO]₈ (L)₁₂ } structures in the presence of suitable linker ligands (L^2- ). These cages show interesting host-guest chemistry and post-assembly reactions. Remarkably, by employing chiral tris(imido)phosphate trianions, enantiopure chiral cages of the type [(Pd₃ X*)₄ (L)₆ ], ([X*]^3- =RRR- or SSS-[PO(N(*CH(CH₃ )Ph)₃ ]^3- ), were synthesized and used for the chiral-recognition and enantio-separation of small racemic guest molecules. Some of these chiral cages were also shown to exhibit polyradical framework structures. In future, these and other similar types of cages are envisioned as potential molecular vessels for performing the reactions in their confined environment. The enantiomeric cages can be probed for asymmetric catalysis and the separation of a range of small chiral molecules.

Coordination-Assembly of Lanthanide Supramolecular Hydrogels with Luminescent Multi-stimulus Response

Luminescent supramolecular hydrogels have shown extensive potential for a variety of applications due to their unique optical properties and biocompatibility. Coordination self-assembly provides a promising strategy for the preparation of supramolecular hydrogels. In this contribution, a series of luminescent lanthanide (Ln) supramolecular hydrogels HG-Ln_2nL_3n^1/2 are synthesized by coordination self-assembly of Ln ions and V shaped bis-tetradentate ligands (H₄L¹ and H₄L²) with different bent angles (∠B). Two rigid conjugated ligands H₄L¹ and H₄L² with bent angles (∠B ≈ 150°) featuring a 2,6-pyridine bitetrazolate chelating moiety were designed and synthesized, which generated hydrogels via the deprotonation self-assembly with lanthanide ions. Characteristic Eu³⁺ and Yb³⁺ emissions were realized in the corresponding hydrogels, with intriguing multi-stimulus response behaviors. The luminescence of the HG-Eu_2nL_3n¹ hydrogel can be enhanced or quenched when stimulated by diverse metal ions, attributed to the replacement of the coordinated lanthanide ions and changes in the intersystem crossing efficiency of the ligand. Furthermore, pH-responsive emission of the HG-Eu_2nL_3n¹ hydrogel has also been observed. Our work provides potential strategies for the design of next-generation smart responsive hydrogel materials with variable structures.

Self-Healing Metallacycle-Cored Supramolecular Polymers Based on a Metal-Salen Complex Constructed by Orthogonal Metal Coordination and Host-Guest Interaction with Amino Acid Sensing

A platinum(II) metallacycle-cored supramolecular network based on a metal-salen complex was successfully constructed by two orthogonal noncovalent interactions (host-guest interactions and metal coordination interactions). The obtained metallo-supramolecular polymer could further form gels when the concentration of metallacycle 1 was 160.0 mM. This gel exhibited multiple stimuli-responsive gel-sol phase transitions under different stimuli, such as temperature, competitive guests, etc. Moreover, it exhibited good self-healing properties and could be used as a turn-off sensor for thiol-containing amino acids.

Controlled Self-Assembly and Multistimuli-Responsive Interconversions of Three Conjoined Twin-Cages

Stimuli-responsive structural transformations between discrete coordination supramolecular architectures not only are essential to construct smart functional materials but also provide a versatile molecular-level platform to mimic the biological transformation process. We report here the controlled self-assembly of three topologically unprecedented conjoined twin-cages, i.e., one stapled interlocked Pd₁₂L₆ cage (2) and two helically isomeric Pd₆L₃ cages (3 and 4) made from the same cis-blocked palladium corners and a new bis-bidentate ligand (1). While cage 2 features three mechanically coupled cavities, cages 3 and 4 are topologically isomeric helicate-based twin-cages based on the same metal/ligand stoichiometry. Sole formation of cage 2 or a dynamic mixture of cages 3 and 4 can be controlled by changing the solvents employed during the self-assembly. Structural conversions between cages 3 and 4 can be triggered by changes in both temperature/solvent and induced-fit guest encapsulations. Well-controlled interconversion between such topologically complex superstructures may lay a solid foundation for achieving a variety of functions within a switchable system.

Selective Anion Binding Drives the Formation of AgI8L6 and AgI12L6 Six-Stranded Helicates

Here we describe the formation of an unexpected and unique family of hollow six-stranded helicates. The formation of these structures depends on the coordinative flexibility of silver and the 2-formyl-1,8-napthyridine subcomponent. Crystal structures show that these assemblies are held together by Ag4I, Ag4Br, or Ag6(SO4)2 clusters, where the templating anion plays an integral structure-defining role. Prior to the addition of the anionic template, no six-stranded helicate was observed to form, with the system instead consisting of a dynamic mixture of triple helicate and tetrahedron. Six-stranded helicate formation was highly sensitive to the structure of the ligand, with minor modifications inhibiting its formation. This work provides an unusual example of mutual stabilization between metal clusters and a self-assembled metal-organic cage. The selective preparation of this anisotropic host demonstrates new modes of guiding selective self-assembly using silver(I), whose many stable coordination geometries render design difficult.

Balancing Ligand Flexibility versus Rigidity for the Stepwise Self-Assembly of M12 L24 via M6 L12 Metal-Organic Cages

Non-covalent interactions are important for directing protein folding across multiple intermediates and can even provide access to multiple stable structures with different properties and functions. Herein, we describe an approach for mimicking this behavior in the self-assembly of metal-organic cages. Two ligands, the bend angles of which are controlled by non-covalent interactions and one ligand lacking the above-mentioned interactions, were synthesized and used for self-assembly with Pd²⁺ . As these weak interactions are easily broken, the bend angles have a controlled flexibility giving access to M₂ (L1)₄ , M₆ (L2)₁₂ , and M₁₂ (L2)₂₄ cages. By controlling the self-assembly conditions this process can be directed in a stepwise fashion. Additionally, the multiple endohedral hydrogen-bonding sites on the ligand were found to play a role in the binding and discrimination of neutral guests.

Fluorescent Supramolecular Polymers Formed by Crown Ether-Based Host-Guest Interaction

Inspired by the vast array of assemblies present in nature, supramolecular chemistry has attracted significant attention on account of its diverse supra-structures, which include micelles, vesicles, and fibers, in addition to its extensive applications in luminescent materials, sensors, bioimaging, and drug delivery over the past decades. Supramolecular polymers, which represent a combination of supramolecular chemistry and polymer science, are constructed by non-covalent interactions, such as host-guest interactions, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic or hydrophilic interactions, metal-ligand interactions, π-π stacking, and electrostatic interactions. To date, numerous host-guest recognition systems have been reported, including crown ethers, cyclodextrins, calixarenes, cucurbituril, pillararenes, and other macrocyclic hosts. Among them, crown ethers, as the first generation of macrocyclic hosts, provide a promising and facile alternative route to supramolecular polymers. In addition, the incorporation of fluorophores into supramolecular polymers could endow them with multiple properties and functions, thereby presenting potential advantages in the context of smart materials. Thus, this review focuses on the fabrication strategies, interesting properties, and potential applications of fluorescent supramolecular polymers based on crown ethers. Typical examples are presented and discussed in terms of three different types of building blocks, namely covalently bonded low-molecular-weight compounds, polymers modified by hosts or guests, and supramolecular coordination complexes.

Self-Healing Heterometallic Supramolecular Polymers Constructed by Hierarchical Assembly of Triply Orthogonal Interactions with Tunable Photophysical Properties

Here, we present a method for the building of new bicyclic heterometallic cross-linked supramolecular polymers by hierarchical unification of three types of orthogonal noncovalent interactions, including platinum(II)-pyridine coordination-driven self-assembly, zinc-terpyridine complex, and host-guest interactions. The platinum-pyridine coordination provides the primary driving force to form discrete rhomboidal metallacycles. The assembly does not interfere with the zinc-terpyridine complexes, which link the discrete metallacycles into linear supramolecular polymers, and the conjugation length is extended upon the formation of the zinc-terpyridine complexes, which red-shifts the absorption and emission spectra. Finally, host-guest interactions via bis-ammonium salt binding to the benzo-21-crown-7 (B21C7) groups on the platinum acceptors afford the cross-linked supramolecular polymers. By continuous increase of the concentration of the supramolecular polymer to a relatively high level, supramolecular polymer gel is obtained, which exhibits self-healing properties and reversible gel-sol transitions stimulated by various external stimuli, including temperature, K⁺, and cyclen. Moreover, the photophysical properties of the supramolecular polymers could be effectively tuned by varying the substituents of the precursor ligands.

Anion Pairs Template a Trigonal Prism with Disilver Vertices

Here we describe the formation of a trigonal prismatic cage, utilizing 2-formyl-1,8-naphthyridine subcomponents to bind pairs of silver(I) ions in close proximity. This cage is the first example of a new class of subcomponent self-assembled polyhedral structures having bimetallic vertices, as opposed to the single metal centers that typically serve as structural elements within such cages. Our new cage self-assembles around a pair of anionic templates, which are shown by crystallographic and solution-phase data to bind within the central cavity of the structure. Many different anions serve as competent templates and guests. Elongated dianions, such as the strong oxidizing agent peroxysulfate, also serve to template and bind within the cavity of the prism. The principle of using subcomponents that have more than one spatially close, but nonchelating, binding site may thus allow access to other higher-order structures with multimetallic vertices.

Control over coordination self-assembly of flexible, multidentate ligands by stepwise metal coordination of isopyrazole subunits

Structural convergence of the self-assembly of flexible oligoisopyrazoles was controlled by stepwise palladium coordination and discrete complexes with structural diversity were selectively generated in a predictable fashion.

Recent developments in the construction of metallacycle/metallacage-cored supramolecular polymers via hierarchical self-assembly

Supramolecular polymers have received considerable attention during the last few decades due to their scientific value in polymer chemistry and profound implications for future developments of advanced materials. Discrete supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) with well-defined size, shape, and geometry have been widely employed to construct hierarchical systems by coordination-driven self-assembly with the spontaneous formation of metal-ligand bonds, which results in the formation of well-defined two-dimensional (2D) metallacycles or three-dimensional (3D) metallacages with high functionalities. The incorporation of discrete SCCs into supramolecular polymers by the orthogonal combination of metal-ligand coordination and other noncovalent interactions or covalent bonding could further facilitate the construction of novel supramolecular polymers with hierarchical architectures and multiple functions including controllable uptake and release of guest molecules, providing a flexible platform for the development of smart materials. In this review, the recent progress in metallacycle/metallacage-cored supramolecular polymers that were constructed by the combination of metal-ligand interactions and other orthogonal interactions (including hydrophobic or hydrophilic interactions, hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces, π-π stacking, electrostatic interactions, host-guest interactions and covalent bonding) has been discussed. In addition, the potential applications of metallacycle/metallacage-cored supramolecular polymers in the areas of light emitting, sensing, bio-imaging, delivery and release, etc., are also presented.

Supramolecular Polymer Cross-Linked by Discrete Tris-[2]pseudorotaxane Metallacycles and Its Redox-Responsive Behavior

A new discrete hexagonal metallacycle M containing tris-[2]pseudorotaxane moiety has been successfully designed and synthesized via coordination-driven self-assembly. The newly designed tris-[2]pseudorotaxane metallacycle was well characterized with nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectra analysis. Such tris-[2]pseudorotaxane metallacycle M and pillar[5]arene dimer (PD) could further form a new family of cross-linked redox-responsive supramolecular polymer M⊃(PD)₃ through a host-guest interaction. Interestingly, the polymer M⊃(PD)₃ displayed redox-responsive behavior and showed tuned weight-average diffusion coefficients D upon redox stimuli, which is attributed to the changed coordination geometries of [Cu(phen)₂]⁺ and [Cu(phen)₂]²⁺ in such system.

Vertical Assembly of Giant Double- and Triple-Decker Spoked Wheel Supramolecular Structures

The double- or triple-decker 3D metallo-hexagons were obtained by self-assembly of multitopic tris-terpyridines with Cd2+ ions in near-quantitative yield. Comprising up to 72 ionic pairs, the multiple spoked wheels display characteristic reversible gelation properties under thermodynamic conditions. The supramolecular metallo-nanoarchitectures were characterized by 1 H NMR, 2D NMR (COSY and NOESY), and diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) and HR-ESI-MS, traveling-wave ion mobility mass spectrometry (TWIM-MS), TEM, and AFM. For the first time, the self-assembly of 45 units at once was demonstrated to yield exceptional giant triple-decker hexagons of up to circa 42 000 Da.

Ring-to-Cage Structural Conversion via Template Effect in a Gold(I) Metallosupramolecular System

A unique example of a ring-to-cage structural conversion in a multinuclear gold(I) coordination system with d-penicillamine (d-H2 pen) is reported. The reaction of [Au2 Cl2 (dppe)] (dppe=1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) with d-H2 pen in a 1:1 ratio gave [Au4 (dppe)2 (d-pen)2 ] ([1]), in which two [Au2 (dppe)]2+ units are linked by two d-pen S atoms in a cyclic form so as to have two bidentate-N,O coordination arms. The subsequent reaction of [1] with Cu(OTf)2 afforded [Au4 Cu(dppe)2 (d-pen)2 ]2+ ([2]2+ ), in which a CuII ion is chelated by the two coordination arms in [1] to form an AuI4 CuII bicyclic metallocage. A similar reaction using Cu(NO3 )2 was accompanied by the ring expansion of [1] to [Au8 (dppe)4 (d-pen)4 ], leading to the production of [Au8 Cu2 (dppe)4 (d-pen)4 ]4+ ([3]4+ ). In [3]4+ , two CuII ions are each chelated by the two coordination arms to form an AuI8 CuII2 tricyclic metallocage, accommodating a nitrate ion. The use of Ni(NO3 )2 or Ni(OAc)2 instead of Cu(NO3 )2 commonly gave a tricyclic metallocage of [Au8 Ni2 (dppe)4 (d-pen)4 ]4+ ([4]4+ ), but a water molecule was accommodated inside the AuI8 NiII2 metallocage.

A supramolecular lanthanide separation approach based on multivalent cooperative enhancement of metal ion selectivity

Multivalent cooperativity plays an important role in the supramolecular self-assembly process. Herein, we report a remarkable cooperative enhancement of both structural integrity and metal ion selectivity on metal-organic M4L4 tetrahedral cages self-assembled from a tris-tridentate ligand (L1) with a variety of metal ions spanning across the periodic table, including alkaline earth (CaII), transition (CdII), and all the lanthanide (LnIII) metal ions. All these M4L14 cages are stable to excess metal ions and ligands, which is in sharp contrast with the tridentate (L2) ligand and bis-tridentate (L3) ligand bearing the same coordination motif as L1. Moreover, high-precision metal ion self-sorting is observed during the mixed-metal self-assembly of tetrahedral M4L4 cages, but not on the M2L3 counterparts. Based on the strong cooperative metal ion self-recognition behavior of M4L4 cages, a supramolecular approach to lanthanide separation is demonstrated, offering a new design principle of next-generation extractants for highly efficient lanthanide separation.

Binding of anions in triply interlocked coordination catenanes and dynamic allostery for dehalogenation reactions

By synergistic combination of multicomponent self-assembly and template-directed approaches, triply interlocked metal organic catenanes that consist of two isolated chirally identical tetrahedrons were constructed and stabilized as thermodynamic minima. In the presence of suitable template anions, the structural conversion from the isolated tetrahedral conformers into locked catenanes occurred via the cleavage of an intrinsically reversible coordination bond in each of the tetrahedrons, followed by the reengineering and interlocking of two fragments with the regeneration of the broken coordination bonds. The presence of several kinds of individual pocket that were attributed to the triply interlocked patterns enabled the possibility of encapsulating different anions, allowing the dynamic allostery between the unlocked/locked conformers to promote the dehalogenation reaction of 3-bromo-cyclohexene efficiently, as with the use of dehalogenase enzymes. The interlocked structures could be unlocked into two individual tetrahedrons through removal of the well-matched anion templates. The stability and reversibility of the locked/unlocked structures were further confirmed by the catching/releasing process that accompanied emission switching, providing opportunities for the system to be a dynamic molecular logic system.

Mapping the Assembly of Metal-Organic Cages into Complex Coordination Networks

Structural transformations of supramolecular assemblies play an important role in the synthesis of complex metal-organic materials. Nonetheless, often little is known of the assembly pathways that lead to the final product. This work describes the conversion of cubic metal-organic polyhedra to connected-cage networks of varying topologies. The neutral cubic cage assembly of formula {Pd₃ [PO(NiPr)₃ ]}₈ (PZDC)₁₂ has been synthesized from {Pd₃ [(NiPr)₃ PO](OAc)₂ (OH)}₂ ⋅2 (CH₃ )₂ SO and 2,5-pyrazenedicarboxilic acid (PZDC-2H). This 42-component self-assembly is the largest known among the neutral cages with Pd^II ions. The cage contains twenty-four vacant carboxylate O-sites at the PZDC ligands that are available for further coordination. Post-assembly reactions of the cubic cage with Fe^II and Zn^II ions produced cage-connected networks of dia and qtz topologies, respectively. During these reactions, the discrete cubic cage transforms into a network of tetrahedral cages that are bridged by the 3D metal ions. The robustness of the [Pd₃ {[PO(NiPr)₃ }]³⁺ molecular building units made it possible to map the post-assembly reactions in detail, which revealed a variety of intermediate 1D and 2D cage networks. Such step-by-step mapping of the transformation of discrete cages to cage-connected frameworks is unprecedented in the chemistry of coordination driven assemblies.

Adaptive self-assembly and induced-fit transformations of anion-binding metal-organic macrocycles

Container-molecules are attractive to chemists due to their unique structural characteristics comparable to enzymes and receptors in nature. We report here a family of artificial self-assembled macrocyclic containers that feature induced-fit transformations in response to different anionic guests. Five metal-organic macrocycles with empirical formula of M_nL_2n (M=Metal; L=Ligand; n=3, 4, 5, 6, 7) are selectively obtained starting from one simple benzimidazole-based ligand and square-planar palladium(II) ions, either by direct anion-adaptive self-assembly or induced-fit transformations. Hydrogen-bonding interactions between the inner surface of the macrocycles and the anionic guests dictate the shape and size of the product. A comprehensive induced-fit transformation map across all the M_nL_2n species is drawn, with a representative reconstitution process from Pd₇L₁₄ to Pd₃L₆ traced in detail, revealing a gradual ring-shrinking mechanism. We envisage that these macrocyclic molecules with adjustable well-defined hydrogen-bonding pockets will find wide applications in molecular sensing or catalysis.

Gelation of Luminescent Supramolecular Cages and Transformation to Crystals with Trace-Doped-Enhancement Luminescence

Supramolecular gels with hierarchical order and complexity have been assembled. The gels contain well-defined Ag₄L₂ luminescent supramolecular cages as cores, which are cross-linked via Ag-P coordination bonding. The resulting gels are highly luminescent and exhibit rich stimuli-responsive behaviors toward mechanical and chemical (nitroexplosive and anions) stimuli. The gels could be transformed to highly luminescent crystal materials upon addition of halogen anions, in which only traces of lumiphor are accommodated in a host crystal matrix.

M8L12 cubic cages with all facial Δ or facial Λ configuration: effects of surface anions on the occupancy of the cage and anion exchange

M₈L₁₂ cubic cages (M = Mn^II, Zn^II or Cd^II), with all eight metal ions having all facial Δ or facial Λ configurations and having an encapsulated anion, were prepared by the self-assembly of m-xylene-bridged imidazolyl-imine ligands and MX₂ (X = PF₆⁻, SbF₆⁻, TfO⁻) salts.
