Oxazines: A New Class of Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Switches

Design of High-Performance Inorganic-Organic Hybrid Nonlinear Optical Materials Using Superhalogen Al13 and Dianhydrides

Novel inorganic-organic hybrid complexes Al13-X (X represents the dianhydrides PMDA, NTCDA, and PTCDA) are theoretically designed and studied using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT. These conjugated dianhydrides containing four acceptor carbonyl groups are commonly used as electron acceptor materials. These compounds possess large binding energies, reflecting the sufficient binding of Al13 to the dianhydride molecule. The binding nature of the complexes is of charge transfer type, i.e., electrons are transferred from the aluminum cluster to the dianhydride. All of the aimed complexes have large mean polarizability (α0) and first hyperpolarizability (β0). The β0 values are explained on the basis of electronic transitions in crucial excited states using the TD-DFT method. Additionally, the hole-electron distribution was analyzed, revealing the nature of electronic excitation. Absorption spectra analysis shows that these complexes have an excellent infrared (IR) transparent region (1000-5000 nm). Therefore, these inorganic-organic hybrid complexes with high stability can be considered as potential candidates for new IR nonlinear optical molecules.

Nonlinear Optical Switching in a Tin-Based Multilayered Halide Perovskite Activated by Stereoactive Lone Pairs and Confined Rotators

In recent years, there has been a surge in research enthusiasm on searching for solid-state nonlinear optical (NLO) switching materials in halide perovskites owing to their exceptional structural flexibility, compositional diversity, and broad property tenability. However, the majority of reported halide perovskite NLO switching materials contain toxic elements (e.g., Pb), which raise significant environmental concerns. Herein, we present a novel lead-free multilayered halide perovskite NLO switching material, (BA)2(EA)2Sn3Br10 (1, where BA is butylammonium and EA is ethylammonium). Driven by the stereochemically active lone-pair electrons of the Sn2+ cation and the cage-confined effect of EA rotators, 1 undergoes a phase transition with symmetry breaking from P4/mnc to Cmc21, which gives rise to a highly efficient modulation of the quadratic NLO property (0.7 times that of KH2PO4) at a high temperature of 353 K. Furthermore, crystallographic investigation combined with theoretical calculations reveals that the efficient modulation of NLO properties in 1 stems from the synergistic effects between stereochemically active lone pair-induced octahedral distortions and order/disorder transformation of organic cations. This study opens up an instructive avenue for designing and advancing environmentally friendly solid-state NLO switches in halide perovskites.

Electric-field induced second harmonic generation responses of push-pull polyenic dyes: experimental and theoretical characterizations

The second-order nonlinear optical properties of four series of amphiphilic cationic chromophores involving different push-pull extremities and increasingly large polyenic bridges have been investigated both experimentally, by means of electric field induced second harmonic (EFISH) generation, and theoretically, using a computational approach combining classical molecular dynamics (MD) and quantum chemical (QM) calculations. This theoretical methodology allows to describe the effects of structural fluctuations on the EFISH properties of the complexes formed by the dye and its iodine counterion, and provides a rationale to EFISH measurements. The good agreement between experimental and theoretical results proves that this MD + QM scheme constitutes a useful tool for a rational, computer-aided, design of SHG dyes.

Nonlinear Optical Responses of Photoswitchable Donor-Acceptor Stenhouse Adducts

This work combines hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) experiments performed in the NIR range (1.30 and 1.60 μm) and quantum chemical calculations to provide a comprehensive description of the second harmonic generation (SHG) responses of donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs). Representative derivatives of the three generations of DASAs, which differ by the nature of their electron-donating and withdrawing moieties and also include clickable species, have been synthesized and their photoswitching behavior fully characterized. The HRS measurements allow us to establish relationships between the magnitude of the SHG response of open forms and the nature of the donor and acceptor groups. The largest SHG responses are obtained for derivatives incorporating either a barbituric acid or an indanedione acceptor unit, while N-methylaniline appears as the most efficient donor group. The calculations support well the experimental data and show that high hyperpolarizabilities are associated to low excitation energies and large extent of the photoinduced intramolecular charge transfer, which enhances the dipole moment variation between the ground and first dipole-allowed electronic excited state. In addition, a complete investigation of the photoswitching kinetics of DASAs in chloroform solution shows important differences, highlighting in particular the role of the donor group on the photoswitching efficiency.

Electrochemically-Switched 2nd Order Non-Linear Optical Response in an Arylimido-Polyoxometalate with High Contrast and Cyclability

Electrochemically switched 2^nd order non-linear optical responses have been demonstrated for the first time in polyoxometalates (POMs), with an arylimido-derivative showing a leading combination of high on/off contrast (94 %), high visible transparency, and cyclability. Spectro-electrochemical and TD-DFT studies indicate that the switch-off results from weakened charge transfer (CT) character of the electronic transitions in the reduced state. This represents the first study of an imido-POM reduced state, and demonstrates the potential of POM hybrids as electrochemically activated molecular switches.

Predicting the Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Responses of Organic Materials: The Role of Dynamics

The last 30 years have witnessed an ever-growing application of computational chemistry for rationalizing the nonlinear optical (NLO) responses of organic chromophores. More specifically, quantum chemical calculations proved highly helpful in gaining fundamental insights into the factors governing the magnitude and character of molecular first hyperpolarizabilities (β), be they either intrinsic to the chromophore molecular structure and arising from symmetry, chemical substitution, or π-electron delocalization, or induced by external contributions such as the laser probe or solvation and polarization effects. Most theoretical reports assumed a rigid picture of the investigated systems, the NLO responses being computed solely at the most stable geometry of the chromophores. Yet, recent developments combining classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and DFT calculations have evidenced the significant role of structural fluctuations, which may induce broad distributions of NLO responses, and even generate them in some instances.This Account presents recent case studies in which theoretical simulations have highlighted these effects. The discussion specifically focuses on the simulation of the second-order NLO properties that can be measured experimentally either from Hyper-Rayleigh Scattering (HRS) or Electric-Field Induced Second Harmonic Generation (EFISHG). More general but technical topics concerning several aspects of the calculations of hyperpolarizabilities are instead discussed in the Supporting Information.Selected examples include organic chromophores, photochromic systems, and ionic complexes in the liquid phase, for which the effects of explicit solvation, concentration, and chromophore aggregation are emphasized, as well as large flexible systems such as peptide chains and pyrimidine-based helical polymers, in which the relative variations of the responses were shown to be several times larger than their average values. The impact of geometrical fluctuations is also illustrated for supramolecular architectures with the examples of nanoparticles formed by organic dipolar dyes in water solution, whose soft nature allows for large shape variations translating into huge fluctuations in time of their NLO response, and of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) based on indolino-oxazolidine or azobenzene switches, in which the geometrical distortions of the photochromic molecules, as well as their orientational and positional disorder within the SAMs, highly impact their NLO response and contrast upon switching. Finally, the effects of the rigidity and fluidity of the surrounding are evidenced for NLO dyes inserted in phospholipid bilayers.

Long-Wavelength Photoconvertible Dimeric BODIPYs for Super-Resolution Single-Molecule Localization Imaging in Near-Infrared Emission

Sulfoxide-bridged dimeric BODIPYs were developed as a new class of long-wavelength photoconvertible fluorophores. Upon visible-light irradiation, a sulfoxide moiety was released to generate the corresponding α,α-directly linked dimeric BODIPYs. The extrusion of SO from sulfoxides was mainly through an intramolecular fashion involving reactive triplet states. By this photoconversion, not only were more than 100 nm red shifts of absorption and emission maxima (up to 648/714 nm) achieved but also stable products with bright fluorescence were produced with high efficiency. The combination of photoactivation and red-shifted excitation/emission offered optimal contrast and eliminated the interference from biological autofluorescence. More importantly, the in situ products of these visible-light-induced reactions demonstrated ideal single-molecule fluorescence properties in the near-infrared region. Therefore, this new photoconversion could be a powerful photoactivation method achieving super-resolution single-molecule localization imaging in a living cell without using UV illumination and cell-toxic additives.

Investigation of the Second Harmonic Generation at the Water-Vacuum Interface by Using Multi-Scale Modeling Methods

The Sequential Quantum Mechanics/Molecular Mechanics scheme has been enacted to perform a systematic investigation of the polarizability (α) and first hyperpolarizability (β) responses at the water-vacuum interface. After performing classical molecular dynamics simulations to provide snapshots of the structures, quantum chemistry calculations of the linear and nonlinear optical responses have been performed for clusters of five water molecules at the time-dependent DFT level in combination with different embedding schemes, ranging from point charges to polarizable point charges, with and without local field effects. When going from the bulk to the interface, the main observations of these calculations encompass i) a modest increase of the average polarizability but an increase by about a factor of two of its anisotropy, ii) an increase by about 20 % of the β_HRS response, accompanied by a small increase of its depolarization ratio, and iii) a net increase of the component of the β tensor normal to the interface (β_zzz ) as well as of β_// . Globally, the interfacial effects on β are localized at the first molecular layer while they are observed up to the fourth molecular layer on α.

Multi-State Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Switches Incorporating One to Three Benzazolo-Oxazolidine Units: A Quantum Chemistry Investigation

This contribution employs quantum chemistry methods to describe the variations of the second nonlinear optical responses of molecular switches based on benzazolo-oxazolidine (BOX) units, connected by π-linkers, along their successive opening/closing. Under the fully closed forms, all of them display negligible first hyperpolarizability (β) values. When one BOX is opened, which is sketched as C→O, a push–pull π-conjugated segment is formed, having the potential to enhance β and to set the depolarization ratio (DR) to its one-dimensional-like value (DR = 5). This is observed when only one BOX is open, either for the monoBOX species (C→O) or for the diBOX (CC→CO) and triBOX (CCC→CCO) compounds, i.e., when the remaining BOXs stay closed. The next BOX openings have much different effects. For the diBOXs, the second opening (CO→OO) is associated with a decrease of β, and this decrease is tuned by controlling the conformation of the π-linker, i.e., the centrosymmetry of the whole compound because β vanishes in centrosymmetric compounds. For the triBOXs, the second opening gives rise to a Λ-shape compound, with a negligible change of β, but a decrease of the DR whereas, along the third opening, β remains similar and the DR decreases to the typical value of octupolar systems (DR = 1.5).

Modeling the First-Order Molecular Hyperpolarizability Dispersion from Experimentally Obtained One- and Two-Photon Absorption

The search for optical materials, particularly organic compounds, is still an attractive and essential field for developing several photonic devices and applications. For example, some applications are based on light scattering with twice the energy of the incoming photon for selected compounds, that is, the nonlinear optical effect related to the second-order susceptibility term from the electronic polarization expression. The microscopic interpretation of this phenomenon is called the first-order molecular hyperpolarizability or incoherent second harmonic generation of light. Understanding such phenomena as a function of the incoming wavelength is crucial to improving the optical response of future materials. Still, the experimental apparatus, hyper-Rayleigh scattering, apparently simple, is indeed a challenging task. Therefore, we proposed a proper alternative to obtain the dispersion of the first-order hyperpolarizability using the well-known one- and two-photon absorption techniques. By the spectral analysis of both the spectra, we gathered spectroscopic parameters and applied them for predicting the first-order hyperpolarizability dispersion. This prediction is based on an n-level energy system, taking into account the position and magnitude of transition dipole moments and the difference between the permanent dipole moment of the n-excited states. Moreover, using the presented method, we can avoid underestimating the first-order hyperpolarizability by not suppressing higher-energy transitions. Quantum chemical calculations and the hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique were used to validate the proposed method.

Development of highly sensitive metal-ion chemosensor and key-lock anticounterfeiting technology based on oxazolidine

Optical chemosensors and ionochromic cellulosic papers based on oxazolidine chromophores were developed for selective photosensing of metal ions and information encryption as security tags, respectively. The oxazolidine molecules have been displayed highly intense fluorescent emission and coloration characteristics that are usable in sensing and anticounterfeiting applications. Obtained results indicated that oxazolidine molecules can be used for selective detection of pb²⁺ (0.01 M), and photosensing of Fe³⁺, Co²⁺ and Ag⁺ metal ion solutions by colorimetric and fluorometric mechanisms with higher intensity and sensitivity. Also, oxazolidine derivatives were coated on cellulosic papers via layer-by-layer method to prepare ionochromic papers. Prepared ionochromic papers were used for printing and handwriting of optical security tags by using of metal ion solutions as a new class of anticounterfeiting inks with dual-mode fluorometric and colorimetric securities. The ionochromic cellulosic papers can be used for photodetection of metal ions in a fast and facile manner that presence of metal ions is detectable by naked eyes. Also, key-lock anticounterfeiting technology based on ionochromic papers and metal ion solution as ink is the most significant strategy for encryption of information to optical tags with higher security.

A pH-Sensitive Spirocyclization Strategy for Constructing a Single Fluorescent Probe Simultaneous Two-Color Visualizing of Lipid Droplets and Lysosomes and Monitoring of Lipophagy

Lipid droplets (LDs) and lysosomes are crucial for maintaining intracellular homeostasis. But single fluorescent probes (SFPs) capable of simultaneous and discriminative visualizing of two organelles above and their interaction in living cells are still challenging due to the lack of rational design strategies. To break this bottleneck, herein, we develop a reliable strategy based on a pH-sensitive intramolecular spirocyclization. As a proof of concept, an SFP CMHCH, which possesses a switchable hemicyanine/spiro-oxazine moiety induced by pH, has been designed and synthesized. In acidic environments, the ring-open form CMHCH exhibits red-shift emission and low logP value, whereas the ring-closed form CMHC displays blue-shift emission and high logP value in neutral or basic environments. Thus, the distinct different hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity and absorption/emission properties of these two forms enable targeting LDs and lysosomes simultaneously and discriminatingly. Very importantly, the dynamic process of lipophagy can be directly monitored with CMHCH. The success of CMHCH indicated that the spirocyclization strategy is efficient for constructing SFPs to LDs and lysosomes.

Combining Benzazolo-Oxazolidine Twins toward Multi-state Nonlinear Optical Switches

Molecular switches are chemical compounds exhibiting the possibility of reversible transformations between their different forms accompanied by a modification in their properties. Among these, switching of multi-addressable Benzazolo-OXazolidines (BOXs) from a closed form to an open form results in drastic modifications in their linear and nonlinear optical properties. Here, we target molecules containing two identical BOX units (DiBOX) connected by different π-conjugated linkers, and we combine synthesis, UV/visible absorption, and hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) measurements, together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Three derivatives have been considered, which differ by the linker: (i) a bithiophene moiety (Bt), (ii) two 3,4-ethylenedioxythiopene (EDOT) units, and (iii) a triad composed of an EDOT-thiophene-EDOT sequence (TtO). As a matter of fact, these systems can adopt three states (CF-CF, POF-POF, and CF-POF) depending on the closed form (CF) or the protonated open form (POF) of each BOX unit. Despite chemical equivalence, stepwise switching of such systems under the addition of a chemical acid or an oxidant has been experimentally evidenced for two of them (DiBOX-Bt and DiBOX-TtO). Then, DFT calculations show that the first BOX opening leads to the formation of a push-pull π-conjugated segment, exhibiting a huge increase in the first hyperpolarizability (β) and a bathochromic shift with respect to the fully closed form. On the contrary, the second BOX opening induces not only a slight bathochromic shift but also a reduction in their β values conferring the great and uncommon abilities to modulate their linear and nonlinear properties over three discrete levels. Among these results, those on DiBOX-Bt agree with the experimental data obtained by HRS measurements and further shed light on their structure-property relationship.

A general strategy to increase emission shift of two-photon ratiometric pH probes using a reversible intramolecular reaction of spiro-oxazolidine

Fluorescent pH probes have been served as powerful tools in biological and pathological studies in recent years due to the important roles of pH values in various physiological processes. Although plenty of pH probes have been delivered, development of two-photon ratiometric pH probes with large emission shift for detecting the variation of intracellular pH values is still a greatly challenging task. To address this concern, in this work, we have discovered a general strategy designing pH probes by means of a pH-dependent reversible intramolecular reaction of spiro-oxazolidine which can efficiently change their conjugation length and the electronic effect concurrently. To display the generality of the strategy, we have synthesized six pH probes, and all these probes exhibit short emission in basic conditions and dramatically red-shifted emission in acid environments. The emission shift of the six probes is more than 150 nm and even up to 210 nm, much larger than shift of all commercial and reported pH probes. The chemical sensing mechanism of intramolecular ring opening/closing reaction of spiro-oxazolidine has been confirmed with ¹H NMR spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Finally, we have used one of six with one- and two-photon properties to successfully image lysosomal pH changes under confocal and two-photon microscopes in a ratiometric manner. We believed that this spiro-oxazolidine strategy can serve as a general and powerful platform for the design of ideal pH probes.

Structural Variation and Switchable Nonlinear Optical Behavior of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Two europium metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on the same ligand, named as ZJU-23-Eu and ZJU-24-Eu, are selectively synthesized by fine-tuning solvent contents to tailor the coordination modes. Eu atoms are eight-coordinated and nine-coordinated in ZJU-23-Eu and ZJU-24-Eu respectively, and their frameworks vary in both spatial connectivity and symmetry. The ligand not only has multiphoton response but also suitable triplet energy level (19 998 cm^-1 ) to sensitize Eu³⁺ . Thus ZJU-23-Eu exhibits characteristic emission of Eu³⁺ peaking at 614 nm via the energy transfer from the two-/three-photon excited ligand to Eu³⁺ , with its bidimensional layered structure benefiting this process. In contrast, the changed spatial connectivity in tridimensional ZJU-24-Eu narrows the distances between adjacent Eu³⁺ ions and reduces the density, resulting in poor two-photon excited fluorescence. Besides, noncentrosymmetric ZJU-24-Eu shows second harmonic generation (SHG) response with an intensity of ≈6.2 times relative to KH₂ PO₄ (KDP) microcrystalline powder while centrosymmetric ZJU-23-Eu cannot. These results have established two nonlinear optical (NLO) models based on MOFs to synchronously analyze the effects of two structural variables on different NLO behaviors, and provide ingenious ways to design MOF-based NLO devices with function on demand.

DFT study of structural and electronic properties of 1,4-diarylcyclopenta[d] pyridazines and oxazines for non-linear optical applications

Polymer and molecular-based electronic materials incorporating heterocycles like thiophenes and pyrroles are attractive possibilities as substitutes for semimetal materials. Heterocyclic materials are heavily studied in this regard due to the large variations in possible substrates. Herein we evaluated four different 5,6-fused ring heterocycles to gain a better understanding of any favorable optical and electronic properties that were due to incorporation of certain moieties. The molecules chosen would highlight the effects that the central ring (pyridazine versus oxazine), aromatic substituent, and heterocyclic side group may have on electronic and optical properties. Computational analysis of these four molecules was done using density functional theory (B3LYP and PBEPBE) with 6-31G(d,p), 6-311 ++G(d,p), and cc-pVTZ basis sets. The constituent molecules were optimized, and calculations were done for the dipole moment, polarizability, first-order hyperpolarizability (β), HOMO and LUMO orbitals, and a natural bonding order (NBO) analysis. These calculations allow for the study of charge density via electrostatic potential mapping and bonding orbitals. The results indicated that the pyridazine molecules presented here are more favorable than the oxazines for non-linear optical (NLO) applications. It is also noted that side ring substituents (thienyl and furyl) in the two pyridazines studied showed very little calculated differences. Finally, heterocyclic rings showed more favorable properties when incorporated as substituents for NLO applications over hydrocarbon aromatics. Graphical abstract.

Photoluminescent and Chromic Nanomaterials for Anticounterfeiting Technologies: Recent Advances and Future Challenges

Counterfeiting and inverse engineering of security and confidential documents, such as banknotes, passports, national cards, certificates, and valuable products, has significantly been increased, which is a major challenge for governments, companies, and customers. From recent global reports published in 2017, the counterfeiting market was evaluated to be $107.26 billion in 2016 and forecasted to reach $206.57 billion by 2021 at a compound annual growth rate of 14.0%. Development of anticounterfeiting and authentication technologies with multilevel securities is a powerful solution to overcome this challenge. Stimuli-chromic (photochromic, hydrochromic, and thermochromic) and photoluminescent (fluorescent and phosphorescent) compounds are the most significant and applicable materials for development of complex anticounterfeiting inks with a high-security level and fast authentication. Highly efficient anticounterfeiting and authentication technologies have been developed to reach high security and efficiency. Applicable materials for anticounterfeiting applications are generally based on photochromic and photoluminescent compounds, for which hydrochromic and thermochromic materials have extensively been used in recent decades. A wide range of materials, such as organic and inorganic metal complexes, polymer nanoparticles, quantum dots, polymer dots, carbon dots, upconverting nanoparticles, and supramolecular structures, could display all of these phenomena depending on their physical and chemical characteristics. The polymeric anticounterfeiting inks have recently received significant attention because of their high stability for printing on confidential documents. In addition, the printing technologies including hand-writing, stamping, inkjet printing, screen printing, and anticounterfeiting labels are discussed for introduction of the most efficient methods for application of different anticounterfeiting inks. This review would help scientists to design and develop the most applicable encryption, authentication, and anticounterfeiting technologies with high security, fast detection, and potential applications in security marking and information encryption on various substrates.

Improving Fatigue Resistance of Dihydropyrene by Encapsulation within a Coordination Cage

Photochromic molecules undergo reversible isomerization upon irradiation with light at different wavelengths, a process that can alter their physical and chemical properties. For instance, dihydropyrene (DHP) is a deep-colored compound that isomerizes to light-brown cyclophanediene (CPD) upon irradiation with visible light. CPD can then isomerize back to DHP upon irradiation with UV light or thermally in the dark. Conversion between DHP and CPD is thought to proceed via a biradical intermediate; bimolecular events involving this unstable intermediate thus result in rapid decomposition and poor cycling performance. Here, we show that the reversible isomerization of DHP can be stabilized upon confinement within a Pd^II₆L₄ coordination cage. By protecting this reactive intermediate using the cage, each isomerization reaction proceeds to higher yield, which significantly decreases the fatigue experienced by the system upon repeated photocycling. Although molecular confinement is known to help stabilize reactive species, this effect is not typically employed to protect reactive intermediates and thus improve reaction yields. We envisage that performing reactions under confinement will not only improve the cyclic performance of photochromic molecules, but may also increase the amount of product obtainable from traditionally low-yielding organic reactions.

Encryption and authentication of security patterns by ecofriendly multi-color photoluminescent inks containing oxazolidine-functionalized nanoparticles

Counterfeiting of confidential documents has been a costly challenge for banks, companies, and customers. Encryption of invisible security marks, such as barcodes, quick response codes, and logos, in national or international confidential documents by high-security anticounterfeiting inks is the most significant solution for counterfeiting problems. Ecofriendly multi-color photoluminescent anticounterfeiting inks based on highly-fluorescent polymer nanoparticles functionalized with new oxazolidine derivatives were developed for the fast and facile encryption of security labels on cellulosic documents, such as paper currency, passport, and certificate. Depending on the polarity of functionalized polymer nanoparticles, a wide range of colors and fluorescence emissions were observed as a result of polar-polar interactions between the oxazolidine molecules and surface functional groups of the nanoparticles. The fluorescent polymer nanoparticles showed spherical, vesicular, and cauliflower-like morphologies resulted from different surface functional groups. Functional polymer nanoparticles displayed high stability and printability on cellulosic substrates due to hydrogen bonding interactions. The highly-fluorescent polymer nanoparticles were also used to prepare anticounterfeiting inks with different colors and fluorescence emissions. All the ecofriendly polymeric anticounterfeiting inks were loaded to stamps with specific marks, and then applied to different confidential documents. Printed labels displayed highly intense fluorescence emission in different colors (green, orange, pink, and purple depending on the matrix polarity) under UV irradiation (365 nm). These water-based multi-color fluorescent anticounterfeiting inks with highly intense, bright, and sensitive fluorescence emission have potential applications in encryption and authentication of security patterns.

Nonlinear Optical Study in a Set of Dibenzylideneacetone Derivatives with Potential for Optical Frequency Conversion

The search for advanced optical materials, in particular, materials with nonlinear optical responses, has, in the last years, experienced substantial growth due to their vast applications in the photonics field. One of those applications is ultra-fast optical frequency conversion, in the optics communications field. Organic compounds have emerged as promising candidates for raw materials to develop nonlinear optical devices, such as optical converters, due to their intrinsic ultra-fast electronic responses. Also, the easy tailoring of organic molecular structures makes organic materials much more appealing than the inorganic ones. In this work, we have performed a linear and nonlinear optical characterization of a set of dibenzylideneacetone derivatives. The nonlinear optical responses investigated correspond to second- and third-order nonlinear processes, namely, first electronic molecular hyperpolarizability and two-photon absorption cross-section, respectively. The value of the first electronic molecular hyperpolarizability, up to 52 cm4·statvolt−1, could be considered a robust value when compared to the short-sized π-electron backbone length of the studied compounds. Such results suggest that these compounds exhibit the potential to be used as optical frequency converters. Quantum chemical calculations were used to predict the theoretical value of the first molecular hyperpolarizability, as well as to simulate the one- and two-photon absorption spectra for all compounds.

Electronic structure and second-order nonlinear optical properties of lemniscular [16]cycloparaphenylene compounds

Chiral organic compounds are excellent second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials due to their inherent non-symmetric electronic structures combined with the advantages of organic compounds. At present, density functional theory (DFT) has become a powerful tool for predicting the properties of novel materials. In this paper, based on chiral lemniscular [16]cycloparaphenylene, three novel compounds are designed by introduction of donor/acceptor units and their combinations. The geometrical/electronic structure, electronic absorption, and the second-order NLO properties of these compounds have been systematically investigated by DFT/TDDFT theory. The simulated UV-Vis/CD spectra of compound 1 are in good agreement with the experimental ones, enabling us to assign their electronic transition characteristics and absolute configuration with high confidence. The investigations show that energy gaps, absorption wavelength and second-order NLO response may be effectively tuned by the introduction of the donor or acceptor units or their combinations. For instance, the second-order NLO value of compound 4 is about 207 times as large as the average second-order polarizability of the organic molecule urea. Thus, the studied compounds are expected to be potential large second-order NLO materials.

Nonlinear optical properties of spirocyclohexadine photochromes: insights from DFT calculations

The second-order nonlinear optical properties of 1,3-indandione-derived spirocyclohexadine compounds, a new class of photochromes showing sensitivity to both UV and visible lights, are investigated by means of density functional theory. The calculations predict that these compounds should display a large first hyperpolarizability variation upon commutation between their cyclic spiropyran and their merocyanine form. We also show that significant enhancement of the NLO response of the merocyanine form, as well as of the NLO contrast, can be achieved by means of appropriate chemical substitution, which makes these derivatives highly appealing for potential use in photo-responsive NLO devices.

Electronic structure and second-order nonlinear optical property of chiral peropyrenes

Discovery of novel materials with excellent second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties is a very attractive topic in chemistry and materials science. Recently, much more attention has been paid to chiral compounds due to their inherent asymmetric structure and intramolecular charge transfer. Currently, the density functional theory (DFT) has become a powerful methodology to rationalize experimental observations and to design new materials with desirable properties. In this work, on the basis of the reported chiral peropyrene, we designed another five compounds consisting of donor or acceptor moieties and the donor/acceptor combinations. We systematically studied their geometrical/electronic structures and electronic transition/second-order NLO properties. The measured UV-Vis/CD spectra of compound 1 are almost reproduced by our calculations, enabling us to assign its electronic transition property and absolute configuration. For these compounds, the different substituents have great effect on their photophysical properties (i.e., band gap, absorption wavelength, and NLO response). The charge transfer synergy provides some useful information for further performance improvement. Interestingly, compound 6 shows a remarkably large first hyperpolarizability value of 18.14 × 10^-30 esu. Our research enables an opportunity for understanding the structure-property relationship of chiral peropyrenes. Metal ions doped into merocyanine form of coumarin derivatives: nonlinear optical molecular switches

In the present study, DFT calculations are carried out on domestically designed 7-methyl-2-phenyl-5'H-spiro[chromene-4,2'-chromeno[3,4-e][1,3]oxazin]-5'-one spiropyran and merocyanine derivatives to recognize alkali and alkaline earth metal ions. Detection of these metal ions can be attained by exploiting the variation of the second-order nonlinear optical properties. Merocyanine forms of these derivatives exhibit the ability to complex with different metal ions (Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, and Ca²⁺), which is associated with large contrasts in the hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) response as a function of metal size and charge. Interestingly, in this study, Mero-Li⁺ shows significant nonlinear optical response with dynamic HRS first hyperpolarizability amounting to 7607 a.u., which is about nine times higher than its corresponding spiro form (846 a.u.) at the CAM-B3LYP/6-311G* level of theory. The present investigation clarifies the effect of metal nature on the enhancement of the first hyperpolarizability between the closed and open forms of the studied coumarin derivatives. Graphical abstract The coumarin-based compound 3 demonstrate the higher second-order NLO responses as a function of metal cation size and charges. Complexation of smaller alkali metal ions leads to the formation of stronger metal-ligand bonds, larger geometrical relaxations and significant enhancement of the HRS first hyperpolarizabilities. This present investigation elucidates the effect of metal nature on the enhancement of the first hyperpolarizability between the closed and open forms of studied coumarin derivatives.

Structural diradical character

A reliable first-principles description of singlet diradical character is essential for predicting nonlinear optical and magnetic properties of molecules. As diradical and closed-shell electronic structures differ in their distribution of single, double, triple, and aromatic bonds, modeling electronic diradical character requires accurate bond-length patterns, in addition to accurate absolute bond lengths. We therefore introduce structural diradical character, which we suggest as an additional measure for comparing first-principles calculations with experimental data. We employ this measure to identify suitable exchange-correlation functionals for predicting the bond length patterns and electronic diradical character of a biscobaltocene with the potential for photoswitchable nonlinear optical activity. Out of four popular approximate exchange-correlation functionals with different exact-exchange admixtures (BP86, TPSS, B3LYP, TPSSh), the two hybrid functionals TPSSh and B3LYP perform best for diradical bond length patterns, with TPSSh being best for the organometallic validation systems and B3LYP for the organic ones (for which the D3 dispersion correction was included). Still, none of the functionals is suitable for correctly describing relative bond lengths across the range of molecules studied, so that none can be recommended for predictive studies of (potential) diradicals without reservation. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Theoretical study on the electronic structure and second-order nonlinear optical properties of benzannulated or selenophene-annulated expanded helicenes

Currently, discovering new materials with superior second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) performance has become a very hot research topic in the fields of chemistry and materials science. Now, density functional theory (DFT) has become a powerful tool to predict the performance of novel materials. In this paper, based on benzannulated and selenophene-annulated expanded helicenes, twenty-six helicenes are designed by introduction donor/acceptor moieties and their combinations at different substituent positions. The geometrical/electronic structures, electronic transition, and second-order NLO properties of these helicenes are full investigated by DFT/TDDFT theory. The investigations show that these helicenes have large first hyperpolarizability values (β_HRS). For instance, the β_HRS value (29.95 × 10⁻³⁰ esu) of helicene H24 is about 7 times larger than that of the highly π-delocalized phenyliminomethyl ferrocene complex. In addition, the introduction of acceptor NO₂ unit at R₇ and R₈ positions for helicenes H1 and H15 can obtain the largest β_HRS value, which is attributed to the enhancement of electron acceptor ability. In view of large NLO response and intrinsic asymmetric structures, the studied helicenes have the possibility to be excellent second-order NLO materials.
