Reductive Cleavage of CO2 by Metal–Ligand-Cooperation Mediated by an Iridium Pincer Complex

Ligand-Bound CO2 as a Nonclassical Route toward Efficient Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction with a Ni N-Confused Porphyrin

Implementing the synergistic effects between the metal and the ligand has successfully streamlined the energetics for CO2 activation and gained high catalytic activities, establishing the important breakthroughs in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Herein, we describe a Ni(II) N-confused porphyrin complex (NiNCP) featuring an acidic N-H group. It is readily deprotonated and exists in an anion form during catalysis. Owing to this functional site, NiNCP gave rise to an outstanding turnover number (TON) as high as 217,000 with a 98% selectivity for CO2 reduction to CO, while the parent Ni(II) porphyrin (NiTPP) was found to be nearly inactive. Our mechanistic analysis revealed a nonclassical reaction pattern where CO2 was effectively activated via the attack of the Lewis-basic ligand. The resulting ligand-bound CO2 adduct could be further reduced to produce CO. This new metal-ligand synergistic effect is anticipated to inspire the design of highly active catalysts for small molecule activations.

Activated Mn-MACHO Complexes Form Stable CO2 Adducts

Manganese(I) carbonyl complexes bearing a MACHO-type ligand (HN(CH2 CH2 PR2 )2 ) readily react in their amido form with CO2 to generate 4-membered {Mn-N-C-O} metallacycles. The stability of the adducts decreases with the steric demand of the R groups at phosphorous (R=isopropyl>adamantyl). The CO2 -adducts display generally a lower reactivity as compared to the parent amido complexes. These adducts can thus be interpretated as masked forms of the active amido catalysts and potentially play important roles as off-loop species or branching points in catalytic transformations of carbon dioxide.

Catalytic Nitrous Oxide Reduction with H2 Mediated by Pincer Ir Complexes

Reduction of nitrous oxide (N2O) with H2 to N2 and water is an attractive process for the decomposition of this greenhouse gas to environmentally benign species. Herein, a series of iridium complexes based on proton-responsive pincer ligands (1-4) are shown to catalyze the hydrogenation of N2O under mild conditions (2 bar H2/N2O (1:1), 30 °C). Among the tested catalysts, the Ir complex 4, based on a lutidine-derived CNP pincer ligand having nonequivalent phosphine and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) side donors, gave rise to the highest catalytic activity (turnover frequency (TOF) = 11.9 h-1 at 30 °C, and 16.4 h-1 at 55 °C). Insights into the reaction mechanism with 4 have been obtained through NMR spectroscopy. Thus, reaction of 4 with N2O in tetrahydrofuran-d8 (THF-d8) initially produces deprotonated (at the NHC arm) species 5NHC, which readily reacts with H2 to regenerate the trihydride complex 4. However, prolonged exposure of 4 to N2O for 6 h yields the dinitrogen Ir(I) complex 7P, having a deprotonated (at the P-arm) pincer ligand. Complex 7P is a poor catalytic precursor in the N2O hydrogenation, pointing out to the formation of 7P as a catalyst deactivation pathway. Moreover, when the reaction of 4 with N2O is carried out in wet THF-d8, formation of a new species, which has been assigned to the hydroxo species 8, is observed. Finally, taking into account the experimental results, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to get information on the catalytic cycle steps. Calculations are in agreement with 4 as the TOF-determining intermediate (TDI) and the transfer of an apical hydrido ligand to the terminal nitrogen atom of N2O as the TOF-determining transition state (TDTS), with very similar reaction rates for the mechanisms involving either the NHC- or the P-CH2 pincer methylene linkers.

Recent developments on the transformation of CO2 utilising ligand cooperation and related strategies

A portfolio of value-added chemicals, fuels and building block compounds can be envisioned from CO₂ on an industrial scale. The high kinetic and thermodynamic stabilities of CO₂, however, present a significant barrier to its utilisation as a C1 source. In this context, metal-ligand cooperation methodologies have emerged as one of the most dominant strategies for the transformation of the CO₂ molecule over the last decade or so. This review focuses on the advancements in CO₂ transformation using these cooperative methodologies. Different and well-studied ligand cooperation methodologies, such as dearomatisation-aromatisation type cooperation, bimetallic cooperation (M⋯M'; M' = main group or transition metal) and other related strategies are also discussed. Furthermore, the cooperative bond activations are subdivided based on the number of atoms connecting the reactive centre in the ligand framework (spacer/linker length) and the transition metal. Several similarities across these seemingly distinct cooperative methodologies are emphasised. Finally, this review brings out the challenges ahead in developing catalytic systems from these CO₂ transformations.

Substituent’s Effects of PNP Ligands in Ru(II)-Catalyzed Hydrogenation of CO2 to Formate: Theoretical Analysis Considering Steric Hindrance and Promotion of Hydrogen Bonding

This paper investigates the effects of substituents in PNP-type ruthenium complexes in the catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to formate using the DFT method. Six groups were considered as substituents linked to the P atom of the PNP ligand: hydrogen, methyl, iso-propyl, tert-butyl, cyclopentyl, and cyclohexyl. The substituent effects were analyzed from the perspectives of steric hindrance and promotion of hydrogen bonding. With the joint functions of steric hindrance and hydrogen bonding promotion during the CO2 coordination step, hydride addition step, and HCOO− rotation step, these groups exhibited very different substituent effects. The results showed that the methyl group was the most favorable substituent when the solvent’s effects were not included, as it formed hydrogen bonding with relatively weak steric hindrance. The second favorable substituent was the iso-propyl group, while the tert-butyl group was the most unfavorable one, due to remarkable steric hindrance. When the substituent was cyclopentyl or cyclohexyl, the complex provided a wider open space for the reaction compared with the tert-butyl-substituted complex, because cyclopentyl and cyclohexyl are cyclic groups. Therefore, the principle for choosing the substituent in PNP-type complexes allowing the design of highly efficient catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation indicates that more hydrogen atoms but wider open space are ideal. In addition, the substituent’s effects can be markedly impacted by the solvent used.

Nucleophilic Reactivity at a ═CH Arm of a Lutidine-Based CNC/Rh System: Unusual Alkyne and CO2 Activation

Reaction of an amido pincer complex [(CNC)*Rh(CO)] (1) (CNC* is the deprotonated form of CNC) with carbon dioxide gave a neutral complex [(CNC-CO₂)^Mes*Rh(CO)] (2), which is the result of a C-C bond-forming reaction between the deprotonated arm of the CNC* ligand and CO₂. The molecular structure of 2 showed a zwitterionic complex, where the CO₂ moiety is covalently connected to the former ═CH arm of the CNC* pincer ligand. The unusual structure of 1 allowed us to explore the reactivity of the CO₂ moiety with selected primary amines RNH₂ (benzylamine and ammonia), which afforded cationic complexes [(CNC)^MesRh(CO)][HRNC(O)O] (R = Bz (3), H (4)). Compounds 3 and 4 are the result of a C-N coupling between the incoming amine and the CO₂ fragment covalently connected to the pincer ligand in 2, a process that involves protonation of the "CH-CO₂" fragment in 2 from the respective amines. Once revealed the nucleophilic character of the ═CH fragment in 1, we explored its reactivity with alkynes, a study that enlightened a novel reactivity trend in alkyne activation. Reaction of 1 with terminal alkynes RC≡CH (R = Ph, 2-py, 4-C₆H₄-CF₃) yielded neutral complexes [(CNC-CH═CHR)^Mes*Rh(CO)] (R = Ph (5), 2-py (6), 4-C₆H₄-CF₃ (7)) in good yields. Deuterium labeling experiments with PhC≡CD confirmed that complex 5 is the product of a formal insertion of the alkyne into the C(sp²)-H bond of the deprotonated arm in 1. This structural proposal was further confirmed by the X-ray molecular structure of phenyl complex 5, which showed the alkyne covalently linked to the pincer ligand. Besides, this novel transformation was analyzed by DFT methods and showed a metal-ligand cooperative mechanism, based on the initial electrophilic attack of the alkyne to the ═CH arm of the CNC^Mes* ligand (making a new C-C bond) followed by the action of a protic base (HN(SiMe₃)₂), which is able to perform a proton rearrangement that leads to the final product 5.

Hydroboration of CO2 to Methyl Boronate Catalyzed by a Manganese Pincer Complex: Insights into the Reaction Mechanism and Ligand Effect

The conversion of carbon dioxide to fuels, polymers, and chemicals is an attractive strategy for the synthesis of high-value-added products and energy-storage materials. Herein, the density functional theory method was employed to investigate the reaction mechanism of CO₂ hydroboration catalyzed by manganese pincer complex, [Mn(Ph₂PCH₂SiMe₂)₂NH(CO)₂Br]. The carbonyl association and carbonyl dissociation mechanisms were investigated, and the calculated results showed that the carbonyl association mechanism is more favorable with an energetic span of 27.0 kcal/mol. Meanwhile, the solvent effect of the reaction was explored, indicating that the solvents could reduce the catalytic activity of the catalyst, which was consistent with the experimental results. In addition, the X ligand effect (X = CO, Br, H, PH₃) on the catalytic activity of the manganese complex was explored, indicating that the anionic complexes [Mn^I - Br]^- and [Mn^I - H]^- have higher catalytic activity. This may not only shed light on the fixation and conversion of CO₂ catalyzed by earth-abundant transition-metal complexes but also provide theoretical insights to design new transition-metal catalysts.

Ascendancy of Nitrogen Heterocycles in the Computationally Designed Mn(I)PNN Pincer Catalysts on the Hydrogenation of Carbon Dioxide to Methanol

The development of sustainable catalysts to get methanol from CO₂ under milder conditions and without any additives is still considered an arduous task. In many instances, transition-metal-catalyzed carbon dioxide to formic acid formation is more facile than methanol formation. This article provides comprehensive density functional theoretic investigations of six new Mn(I)PNN complexes, which are designed to perform CO₂ to methanol conversion under milder reaction conditions. All these six catalysts have similar structural features except at terminal nitrogen, -N (1), where adenine-inspired nitrogen heterocycles containing pyridine and pyrimidine moieties are attached to instill an electron withdrawing effect on the central metal and thus to facilitate dihydrogen polarization during the catalyst regeneration. All these computationally modeled Mn(I)PNN complexes demonstrate the promising catalytic activity to get methanol through cascade catalytic cycles at 298.15 K. The metal-ligand cooperative (MLC) as well as noncooperative (NC) pathways are investigated for each catalytic cycle. The NC pathway is the preferred pathway for formic acid and formaldehyde formation, whereas methanol formation proceeds through only the MLC pathway. Different nitrogen heterocycles attached to the -N (1) terminal manifested a considerable amount of impact on the Gibbs free energies, overall activation energies, and computed turnover frequencies (TOFs). Among all the catalysts, SPCAT02 provides excellent TOFs for HCO₂H (500 151 h^-1), HCHO (11 912 h^-1), and CH₃OH (2 372 400 h^-1) formation at 50 °C. SPCAT04 is found to be a better catalyst for the selective formation of formic acid formation at room temperature than the rest of the catalysts. The computed TOF results are found reliable upon comparison with experimentally established catalysts. To establish the structure-activity relationship, the activation strain model and Fukui function calculations are performed on all the catalysts. Both these studies provide complementary results. The present study revealed a very important finding that a more electrophilic metal center could facilitate the CO₂ hydrogenation reaction robustly. All computationally designed catalysts could be cheaper and better alternatives to convert CO₂ to methanol under mild reaction conditions in an aqueous medium.

HCOOH disproportionation to MeOH promoted by molybdenum PNP complexes

Molybdenum(0) complexes with aliphatic aminophosphine pincer ligands have been prepared which are competent for the disproportionation of formic acid, thus representing the first example so far reported of non-noble metal species to catalytically promote such transformation. In general, formic acid disproportionation allows for an alternative access to methyl formate and methanol from renewable resources. MeOH selectivity up to 30% with a TON of 57 could be achieved while operating at atmospheric pressure. Selectivity (37%) and catalyst performance (TON = 69) could be further enhanced when the reaction was performed under hydrogen pressure (60 bars). A plausible mechanism based on experimental evidence is proposed.

Mo(0) complexes with aliphatic PNP-pincer ligands enable the first example of non-noble metal catalyzed formic acid disproportionation leading to methanol with a selectivity of up to 37% and a turnover number up to 69.

Hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol catalyzed by a manganese pincer complex: insights into the mechanism and solvent effect

Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to explore the reaction mechanism of three cascade cycles for the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to methanol (CO2 + 3H2 → CH3OH + H2O) catalyzed by a manganese pincer complex [Mn(Ph2PCH2SiMe2)2N(CO)2]. The three cascade cycles involve: the hydrogenation of CO2 to formic acid, the hydrogenation of formic acid to methanediol and the decomposition of methanediol to formaldehyde and water, and the hydrogenation of formaldehyde to methanol. The calculated results demonstrate that hydrogen activation is the rate-determining step of each catalytic cycle under solvent-free conditions, and the energy span of the whole reaction is 27.1 kcal mol-1. Furthermore, the solvent was found to be of importance in this reaction. In three different solvents, the rate-determining steps of this reaction are all the hydrogen transfer step of the formic acid hydrogenation stage, and the corresponding energy spans in water, toluene and THF solvents are 21.3, 20.8 and 20.4 kcal mol-1, respectively. Such a low energy span implies that this manganese complex could be a promising catalyst for the efficient conversion of CO2 and H2 to methanol at temperatures below 100-150 °C.

Effects of Appended Poly(ethylene glycol) on Electrochemical CO2 Reduction by an Iron Porphyrin Complex

Electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO₂) reduction is a sustainable approach for transforming atmospheric CO₂ into chemical feedstocks and fuels. To overcome the kinetic barriers of electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction, catalysts with high selectivity, activity, and stability are needed. Here, we report an iron porphyrin complex, FePEGP, with a poly(ethylene glycol) unit in the second coordination sphere, as a highly selective and active electrocatalyst for the electrochemical reduction of CO₂ to carbon monoxide (CO). Controlled-potential electrolysis using FePEGP showed a Faradaic efficiency of 98% and a current density of -7.8 mA/cm² at -2.2 V versus Fc/Fc⁺ in acetonitrile using water as the proton source. The maximum turnover frequency was calculated to be 1.4 × 10⁵ s^-1 using foot-of-the-wave analysis. Distinct from most other catalysts, the kinetic isotope effect (KIE) study revealed that the protonation step of the Fe-CO₂ adduct is not involved in the rate-limiting step. This model shows that the PEG unit as the secondary coordination sphere enhances the catalytic kinetics and thus is an effective design for electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction.

Chiral-at-Metal: Iridium(III) Tetrazole Complexes With Proton-Responsive P-OH Groups for CO2 Hydrogenation

A rise in atmospheric CO2 levels, following years of burning fossil fuels, has brought about increase in global temperatures and climate change due to the greenhouse effect. As such, recent efforts in addressing this problem have been directed to the use of CO2 as a non-expensive and non-toxic single carbon, C1, source for making chemical products. Herein, we report on the use of tetrazolyl complexes as catalyst precursors for hydrogenation of CO2. Specifically, tetrazolyl compounds bearing P-S bonds have been synthesized with the view of using these as P∧N bidentate tetrazolyl ligands (1-3) that can coordinate to iridium(III), thereby forming heteroatomic five-member complexes. Interestingly, reacting the P,N'-bidentate tetrazolyl ligands with [Ir(C5 Me 5)Cl 2]2 led to serendipitous isolation of chiral-at-metal iridium(III) half-sandwich complexes (7-9) instead. Complexes 7-9 were obtained via prior formation of non-chiral iridium(III) half-sandwich complexes (4-6). The complexes undergo prior P-S bond heterolysis of the precursor ligands, which then ultimately results in new half-sandwich iridium(III) complexes featuring monodentate phosphine co-ligands with proton-responsive P-OH groups. Conditions necessary to significantly affect the rate of P-S bond heterolysis in the precursor ligand and the subsequent coordination to iridium have been reported. The complexes served as catalyst precursors and exhibited activity in CO2 and bicarbonate hydrogenation in excellent catalytic activity, at low catalyst loadings (1 μmol or 0.07 mol% with respect to base), producing concentrated formate solutions (ca 180 mM) exclusively. Catalyst precursors with proton-responsive P-OH groups were found to influence catalytic activity when present as racemates, while ease of dissociation of the ligand from the iridium center was observed to influence activity in spite of the presence of electron-donating ligands. A test for homogeneity indicated that hydrogenation of CO2 proceeded by homogeneous means. Subsequently, the mechanism of the reaction by the iridium(III) catalyst precursors was studied using 1H NMR techniques. This revealed that a chiral-at-metal iridium hydride species generated in situ served as the active catalyst.

Redox-Active Manganese Pincers for Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

The decrease of total amount of atmospheric CO2 is an important societal challenge in which CO2 reduction has an important role to play. Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction with homogeneous catalysts is based on highly tunable catalyst design and exploits an abundant C1 source to make valuable products such as fuels and fuel precursors. These methods can also take advantage of renewable electricity as a green reductant. Mn-based catalysts offer these benefits while incorporating a relatively cheap and abundant first-row transition metal. Historically, interest in this field started with Mn(bpy-R)(CO)3X, whose performance matched that of its Re counterparts while achieving substantially lower overpotentials. This review examines an emerging class of homogeneous Mn-based electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction, Mn complexes with meridional tridentate coordination also known as Mn pincers, most of which contain redox-active ligands that enable multi-electron catalysis. Although there are relatively few examples in the literature thus far, these catalysts bring forth new catalytic mechanisms not observed for the well-established Mn(bpy-R)(CO)3X catalysts, and show promising reactivity for future studies.

Metal-Ligand Cooperativity of the Calix[4]pyrrolato Aluminate: Triggerable C-C Bond Formation and Rate Control in Catalysis

Metal-ligand cooperativity (MLC) had a remarkable impact on transition metal chemistry and catalysis. By use of the calix[4]pyrrolato aluminate, [1]- , which features a square-planar AlIII , we transfer this concept into the p-block and fully elucidate its mechanisms by experiment and theory. Complementary to transition metal-based MLC (aromatization upon substrate binding), substrate binding in [1]- occurs by dearomatization of the ligand. The aluminate trapps carbonyls by the formation of C-C and Al-O bonds, but the products maintain full reversibility and outstanding dynamic exchange rates. Remarkably, the C-C bonds can be formed or cleaved by the addition or removal of lithium cations, permitting unprecedented control over the system's constitutional state. Moreover, the metal-ligand cooperative substrate interaction allows to twist the kinetics of catalytic hydroboration reactions in a unique sense. Ultimately, this work describes the evolution of an anti-van't Hoff/Le Bel species from their being as a structural curiosity to their application as a reagent and catalyst.

Influence of Multisite Metal-Ligand Cooperativity on the Redox Activity of Noninnocent N2S2 Ligands

Metal-ligand cooperativity (MLC) relies on chemically reactive ligands to assist metals with small-molecule binding and activation, and it has facilitated unprecedented examples of catalysis with metal complexes. Despite growing interest in combining ligand-centered chemical and redox reactions for chemical transformations, there are few studies demonstrating how chemically engaging redox active ligands in MLC affects their electrochemical properties when bound to metals. Here we report stepwise changes in the redox activity of model Ru complexes as zero, one, and two BH₃ molecules undergo MLC binding with a triaryl noninnocent N₂S₂ ligand derived from o-phenylenediamine (L1). A similar series of Ru complexes with a diaryl N₂S₂ ligand with ethylene substituted in place of phenylene (L2) is also described to evaluate the influence of the o-phenylenediamine subunit on redox activity and MLC. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that MLC attenuates ligand-centered redox activity in both series of complexes, but electron transfer is still achieved when only one of the two redox-active sites on the ligands is chemically engaged. The results demonstrate how incorporating more than one multifunctional reactive site could be an effective strategy for maintaining redox noninnocence in ligands that are also chemically reactive and competent for MLC.

Recent Progress with Pincer Transition Metal Catalysts for Sustainability

Our planet urgently needs sustainable solutions to alleviate the anthropogenic global warming and climate change. Homogeneous catalysis has the potential to play a fundamental role in this process, providing novel, efficient, and at the same time eco-friendly routes for both chemicals and energy production. In particular, pincer-type ligation shows promising properties in terms of long-term stability and selectivity, as well as allowing for mild reaction conditions and low catalyst loading. Indeed, pincer complexes have been applied to a plethora of sustainable chemical processes, such as hydrogen release, CO2 capture and conversion, N2 fixation, and biomass valorization for the synthesis of high-value chemicals and fuels. In this work, we show the main advances of the last five years in the use of pincer transition metal complexes in key catalytic processes aiming for a more sustainable chemical and energy production.

Facile C=O Bond Splitting of Carbon Dioxide Induced by Metal-Ligand Cooperativity in a Phosphinine Iron(0) Complex

New iron complexes [Cp*FeL]⁻ (1‐σ and 1‐π, Cp*=C₅Me₅) containing the chelating phosphinine ligand 2‐(2′‐pyridyl)‐4,6‐diphenylphosphinine (L) have been prepared, and found to undergo facile reaction with CO₂ under ambient conditions. The outcome of this reaction depends on the coordination mode of the versatile ligand L. Interaction of CO₂ with the isomer 1‐π, in which L binds to Fe through the phosphinine moiety in an η⁵ fashion, leads to the formation of 3‐π, in which CO₂ has undergone electrophilic addition to the phosphinine group. In contrast, interaction with 1‐σ—in which L acts as a σ‐chelating [P,N] ligand—leads to product 3‐σ in which one C=O bond has been completely broken. Such CO₂ cleavage reactions are extremely rare for late 3d metals, and this represents the first such example mediated by a single Fe centre.

The role of neutral Rh(PONOP)H, free NMe2H, boronium and ammonium salts in the dehydrocoupling of dimethylamine-borane using the cationic pincer [Rh(PONOP)(η2-H2)]+ catalyst

The σ-amine-borane pincer complex [Rh(PONOP)(η1-H3B·NMe3)][BArF4] [2, PONOP = κ3-NC5H3-2,6-(OPtBu2)2] is prepared by addition of H3B·NMe3 to the dihydrogen precursor [Rh(PONOP)(η2-H2)][BArF4], 1. In a similar way the related H3B·NMe2H complex [Rh(PONOP)(η1-H3B·NMe2H)][BArF4], 3, can be made in situ, but this undergoes dehydrocoupling to reform 1 and give the aminoborane dimer [H2BNMe2]2. NMR studies on this system reveal an intermediate neutral hydride forms, Rh(PONOP)H, 4, that has been prepared independently. 1 is a competent catalyst (2 mol%, ∼30 min) for the dehydrocoupling of H3B·Me2H. Kinetic, mechanistic and computational studies point to the role of NMe2H in both forming the neutral hydride, via deprotonation of a σ-amine-borane complex and formation of aminoborane, and closing the catalytic cycle by reprotonation of the hydride by the thus-formed dimethyl ammonium [NMe2H2]+. Competitive processes involving the generation of boronium [H2B(NMe2H)2]+ are also discussed, but shown to be higher in energy. Off-cycle adducts between [NMe2H2]+ or [H2B(NMe2H)2]+ and amine-boranes are also discussed that act to modify the kinetics of dehydrocoupling.

Hydration of nitriles using a metal-ligand cooperative ruthenium pincer catalyst

The hydration of a broad range of aliphatic and (hetero)aromatic nitriles is reported via catalysis by metal–ligand cooperative Ru pincer complexes under very mild conditions.

Nitrile hydration provides access to amides that are important structural elements in organic chemistry. Here we report catalytic nitrile hydration using ruthenium catalysts based on a pincer scaffold with a dearomatized pyridine backbone. These complexes catalyze the nucleophilic addition of H₂O to a wide variety of aliphatic and (hetero)aromatic nitriles in ^tBuOH as solvent. Reactions occur under mild conditions (room temperature) in the absence of additives. A mechanism for nitrile hydration is proposed that is initiated by metal–ligand cooperative binding of the nitrile.

Parallels between Metal-Ligand Cooperativity and Frustrated Lewis Pairs

Metal ligand cooperativity (MLC) and frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chemistry both feature the cooperative action of a Lewis acidic and a Lewis basic site on a substrate. A lot of work has been carried out in the field of FLPs to prevent Lewis adduct formation, which often reduces the FLP reactivity. Parallels are drawn between the two systems by looking at their reactivity with CO2, and we explore the role of steric bulk in preventing dimer formation in MLC systems.

Mechanistic Insights into the Ni-Catalyzed Reductive Carboxylation of C-O Bonds in Aromatic Esters with CO2 : Understanding Remarkable Ligand and Traceless-Directing-Group Effects

The mechanism of the Ni⁰ -catalyzed reductive carboxylation reaction of C(sp² )-O and C(sp³ )-O bonds in aromatic esters with CO₂ to access valuable carboxylic acids was comprehensively studied by using DFT calculations. Computational results revealed that this transformation was composed of several key steps: C-O bond cleavage, reductive elimination, and/or CO₂ insertion. Of these steps, C-O bond cleavage was found to be rate-determining, and it occurred through either oxidative addition to form a Ni^II intermediate, or a radical pathway that involved a bimetallic species to generate two Ni^I species through homolytic dissociation of the C-O bond. DFT calculations revealed that the oxidative addition step was preferred in the reductive carboxylation reactions of C(sp² )-O and C(sp³ )-O bonds in substrates with extended π systems. In contrast, oxidative addition was highly disfavored when traceless directing groups were involved in the reductive coupling of substrates without extended π systems. In such cases, the presence of traceless directing groups allowed for docking of a second Ni⁰ catalyst, and the reactions proceed through a bimetallic radical pathway, rather than through concerted oxidative addition, to afford two Ni^I species both kinetically and thermodynamically. These theoretical mechanistic insights into the reductive carboxylation reactions of C-O bonds were also employed to investigate several experimentally observed phenomena, including ligand-dependent reactivity and site-selectivity.

Metal-Ligand Cooperation as Key in Formation of Dearomatized NiII-H Pincer Complexes and in Their Reactivity toward CO and CO2

The unique synthesis and reactivity of [(^RPNP*)NiH] complexes (1a,b), based on metal–ligand cooperation (MLC), are presented (^RPNP* = deprotonated PNP ligand, R = ⁱPr, ^tBu). Unexpectedly, the dearomatized complexes 1a,b were obtained by reduction of the dicationic complexes [(^RPNP)Ni(MeCN)](BF₄)₂ with sodium amalgam or by reaction of the free ligand with Ni⁰(COD)₂. Complex 1b reacts with CO via MLC, to give a rare case of a distorted-octahedral PNP-based pincer complex, the Ni(0) complex 3b. Complexes 1a,b also react with CO₂ via MLC to form a rare example of η¹ binding of CO₂ to nickel, complexes 4a,b. An unusual CO₂ cleavage process by complex 4b, involving C–O and C–P cleavage and C–C bond formation, led to the Ni–CO complex 3b and to the new complex [(PⁱPr₂NC₂O₂)Ni(P(O)ⁱPr₂)] (5b). All complexes have been fully characterized by NMR and X-ray crystallography.

Computational mechanistic study of Ru-catalyzed CO2 reduction by pinacolborane revealing the σ-π coupling mechanism for CO2 decarbonylation

It has been reported that RuH2(η2-H2)2(PCy3)2 (1) could mediate CO2 reduction by pinacolborane (HBpin), affording pinBOBpin (7), pinBOCH3 (8), pinBOCHO (9), pinBOCH2OBpin (10), and an unprecedented C2 species pinBOCH2OCHO (11), which meanwhile is converted to the Ru complexes, including the transient 3 (RuH(κ2-O2CH)(CO)(PCy3)2) and 5 (RuH{(μ-H)2Bpin}(CO)(PCy3)2), and the persistent 4 (RuH(κ2-O2CH)(CO)2(PCy3)2) and 6 (RuH2(CO)2(PCy3)2). To gain an insight into the catalysis, a DFT study was carried out. The study identified the key active catalyst to be the hydride 13 (RuH2(CO)(PCy3)2) and characterized the mechanisms leading to the experimentally observed species (3-11). By investigating the experimental system, we learned a new mechanism called σ-π coupling for CO2 decarbonylation. Under this mechanism, CO2 and HBpin first co-coordinate to the Ru center of 13, then σ-π coupling takes place, forming a B-O bond between CO2 and HBpin, Ru-H and Ru-C bonds, and simultaneously breaking the H-Bpin bond, followed by -OBpin group migration to the Ru center, completing the CO2 decarbonylation. An interesting feature regarding the Ru catalysis was the involvement of η1-Hη1-H → η2-H2 and η1-Hη1-Bpin → η2-HBpin reductions, which facilitated the oxidative H-Bpin addition or the coordination mode change of CO2 from η1-O to η2-CO for CO2 activation or σ-π coupling. The facilitation effects could be attributed to the reductions enhancing the electron donations from the Ru center to the antibonding orbitals of the activating bonds.

The elusive abnormal CO2 insertion enabled by metal-ligand cooperative photochemical selectivity inversion

Direct hydrogenation of CO₂ to CO, the reverse water–gas shift reaction, is an attractive route to CO₂ utilization. However, the use of molecular catalysts is impeded by the general reactivity of metal hydrides with CO₂. Insertion into M–H bonds results in formates (MO(O)CH), whereas the abnormal insertion to the hydroxycarbonyl isomer (MC(O)OH), which is the key intermediate for CO-selective catalysis, has never been directly observed. We here report that the selectivity of CO₂ insertion into a Ni–H bond can be inverted from normal to abnormal insertion upon switching from thermal to photochemical conditions. Mechanistic examination for abnormal insertion indicates photochemical N–H reductive elimination as the pivotal step that leads to an umpolung of the hydride ligand. This study conceptually introduces metal-ligand cooperation for selectivity control in photochemical transformations.

Insight into catalytic reduction of CO2 to methane with silanes using Brookhart's cationic Ir(iii) pincer complex

Using density functional theory computations, we investigated in detail the underlying reaction mechanism and crucial intermediates present during the reduction of carbon dioxide to methane with silanes, catalyzed by the cationic Ir-pincer complex ((POCOP)Ir(H)(acetone)+, POCOP = 2,6-bis(dibutylphosphinito)phenyl). Our study postulates a plausible catalytic cycle, which involves four stages, by sequentially transferring silane hydrogen to the CO2 molecule to give silylformate, bis(silyl)acetal, methoxysilane and the final product, methane. The first stage of reducing carbon dioxide to silylformate is the rate-determining step in the overall conversion, which occurs via the direct dissociation of the silane Si-H bond to the C[double bond, length as m-dash]O bond of a weakly coordinated Ir-CO2 moiety, with a free energy barrier of 29.5 kcal mol-1. The ionic SN2 outer-sphere pathway in which the CO2 molecule nucleophilically attacks at the η1-silane iridium complex to cleave the η1-Si-H bond, followed by the hydride transferring from iridium dihydride [(POCOP)IrH2] to the cation [O[double bond, length as m-dash]C-OSiMe3]+, is a slightly less favorable pathway, with a free energy barrier of 33.0 kcal mol-1 in solvent. The subsequent three reducing steps follow similar pathways: the ionic SN2 outer-sphere process with silylformate, bis(silyl)acetal and methoxysilane substrates nucleophilically attacking the η1-silane iridium complex to give the ion pairs [(POCOP)IrH2] [HC(OSiMe3)2]+, [(POCOP)IrH2] [CH2(OSiMe3)2(SiMe3)]+, and [(POCOP)IrH2] [CH3O(SiMe3)2]+, respectively, followed by the hydride transfer process. The rate-limiting steps of the three reducing stages are calculated to possess free energy barriers of 12.2, 16.4 and 22.9 kcal mol-1, respectively. Furthermore, our study indicates that the natural iridium dihydride [(POCOP)IrH2] generated along the ionic SN2 outer-sphere pathway could greatly facilitate the silylation of CO2, with a potential energy barrier calculated at a low value of 16.7 kcal mol-1.

RuBisCO-Inspired CO2 Activation and Transformation by an Iridium(I) Complex

The synthesis of a new iridium(I) complex containing an enamido phosphine anion (dbuP^- ) and its unique reactivity with CO₂ is reported. The complex binds two equivalents of CO₂ and initiates a highly selective reaction cascade. The reaction leads to the reversible cleavage of CO₂ and the enamido ligand as well. Computational analysis points to the existence of a relatively stable Ir-CO₂ complex as a reaction intermediate prior to CO₂ cleavage, which was confirmed experimentally. The observed transformation resembles several aspects of enzymatic CO₂ fixation by RuBisCO.
