Influence of the 5f Orbitals on the Bonding and Reactivity in Organoactinides: Experimental and Computational Studies on a Uranium Metallacyclopropene

Molecular Models of Atomically Dispersed Uranium at MoS2 Surfaces Reveal Cooperative Mechanism of Water Reduction

Single atoms of uranium supported on molybdenum sulfide surfaces (U@MoS2) have been recently demonstrated to facilitate the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) through electrocatalysis. Theoretical calculations have predicted uranium hydroxide moieties bound to edge-sulfur atoms of MoS2 as a proposed transition state involved in the HER process. However, the isolation of relevant intermediates involved in this process remains a challenge, rendering mechanistic hypotheses unverified. The present work describes the isolation and characterization of a uranium-hydroxide intermediate on molybdenum sulfide surfaces using [(Cp*3Mo3S4)UCp*], a molecular model of a reduced uranium center supported at MoS2. Mechanistic investigations highlight the metalloligand cooperativity with uranium involved in the water activation pathway. The corresponding uranium-oxo analogue, [(Cp*3Mo3S4)Cp*U(═O)], was also accessed from the hydroxide cluster via hydrogen atom transfer and from [(Cp*3Mo3S4)UCp*] through an alternative direct oxygen atom transfer. These results provide an atomistic perspective on the reactivity of low-valent uranium at molybdenum sulfide surfaces toward water, modeling key intermediates associated with the HER of U@MoS2 catalysts.

Neutral inverse-sandwich rare-earth metal complexes of the benzene tetraanion

Rare-earth metal complexes of the parent benzene tetraanion and neutral inverse-sandwich rare-earth metal arene complexes have remained elusive. Here, we report the first neutral inverse-sandwich rare-earth metal complexes of the parent benzene tetraanion supported by a monoanionic β-diketiminate (BDI) ligand. Reduction of the trivalent rare-earth metal diiodide precursors (BDI)MI2(THF) (BDI = HC(C(Me)N[C6H3-(3-pentyl)2-2,6])2; M = Y, 1-Y; M = Sm, 1-Sm) in benzene or para-xylene by potassium graphite yielded the neutral inverse-sandwich rare-earth metal arene complexes [(BDI)M(THF) n ]2(μ-η6,η6-arene) (M = Y, Sm; arene = benzene, 2-M; arene = para-xylene, 3-M). Single crystal X-ray diffraction, spectroscopic and magnetic characterization studies, together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that these neutral rare-earth metal arene complexes possess an [M3+-(arene)4--M3+] electronic structure with strong metal-arene δ interactions. The arene exchange reactivity shows that 2-Sm has higher stability than 3-Sm. Furthermore, 2-Sm can behave as a four-electron reductant to reduce unsaturated organic substrates. Particularly, while the reaction of 2-Sm with 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene (COT) yielded (BDI)Sm(η8-COT) (4-Sm), 2-Sm reacted with 1,4-diphenylbutadiyne to afford (BDI)Sm(η4-C4Ph2) (5-Sm), the first rare-earth metallacyclopentatriene complex.

A Metallocene Bis(phosphoranocarbene) of Uranium and a Probe of Its Reactivity with Alcohols

The addition of 2 equiv of the phosphaylide H2C═PPh3 to the dimethyl uranium metallocene Cp*2UMe2 (Cp* = η5-C5Me5) in toluene with gentle heating at 40 °C generates the phosphorano-stabilized bis(carbene) Cp*2U[C(H)PPh3]2 (1) in good yield. Characterization of 1 by X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals two short uranium-carbon bonds, ranging from 2.301(5) to 2.322(5) Å, consistent with the presence of U═C carbene-type bonds. Monitoring the reaction by NMR spectroscopy suggests that it proceeds through the intermediate formation of the methyl carbene complex Cp*2U[C(H)PPh3](Me) (1Int); however, prolonged heating of these solutions leads to the ortho-cyclometalated carbene species Cp*2U{κ2-[C(H)PPh2(C6H4)]} (2) via intramolecular C-H activation. Rapid conversion from 1 to 2 occurs within hours upon heating its toluene solutions to 100 °C. Preliminary reactivity studies of 1 show that it readily reacts with alcohols, such as HODipp (Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) and HOC(CF3)3, to give the mixed carbene alkoxide compounds Cp*2U[C(H)PPh3](OR) (R = Dipp (4Dipp), C(CF3)3 (5CF3)). In one case, the reaction of 1 with HODipp in the presence of adventitious water led to the formation of a few crystals of the terminal U(IV) oxo complex, [Ph3PCH3][Cp*2U(O)(ODipp)] (3oxo). The isolation of 1 marks the first instance of an unchelated, heteroatom-stabilized bis(carbene) complex of uranium that also provides an entryway to the synthesis of its monocarbene derivatives through protonolysis.

Progress in Nonaqueous Molecular Uranium Chemistry: Where to Next?

There is long-standing interest in nonaqueous uranium chemistry because of fundamental questions about uranium's variable chemical bonding and the similarities of this pseudo-Group 6 element to its congener d-block elements molybdenum and tungsten. To provide historical context, with reference to a conference presentation slide presented around 1988 that advanced a defining collection of top targets, and the challenge, for synthetic actinide chemistry to realize in isolable complexes under normal experimental conditions, this Viewpoint surveys progress against those targets, including (i) CO and related π-acid ligand complexes, (ii) alkylidenes, carbynes, and carbidos, (iii) imidos and terminal nitrides, (iv) homoleptic polyalkyls, -alkoxides, and -aryloxides, (v) uranium-uranium bonds, and (vi) examples of topics that can be regarded as branching out in parallel from the leading targets. Having summarized advances from the past four decades, opportunities to build on that progress, and hence possible future directions for the field, are highlighted. The wealth and diversity of uranium chemistry that is described emphasizes the importance of ligand-metal complementarity in developing exciting new chemistry that builds our knowledge and understanding of elements in a relativistic regime.

Uranium versus Thorium: A Case Study on a Base-Free Terminal Uranium Imido Metallocene

The structure of and bonding in two base-free terminal actinide imido metallocenes, [η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2]2An═N(p-tolyl) (An = U (1), Th (1')) are compared and connected to their individual reactivity. While structurally rather similar, the U(IV) derivative 1 is slightly more sterically crowded. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) studies imply that the 5f orbital contribution to the bonding within the individual actinide imido An═N(p-tolyl) moieties is significantly larger for 1 than for 1', which makes the bonds between the [η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2]2U2+ and [(p-tolyl)N]2- fragments more covalent. Therefore, steric and electronic factors impact the reactivity of these imido complexes. For example, complex 1 is inert toward internal alkynes, but it readily forms Lewis base adducts [η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2]2U═N(p-tolyl)(L) (L = OPMe3 (6), dmap (9), PhCN (14), and 2,6-Me2PhNC (17)) with Me3PO, 4-dimethylaminopyridine (dmap), nitrile, PhCN, or isonitrile 2,6-Me2PhNC. It may also react as a nucleophile or undergo a [2 + 2] cycloaddition with CS2, isothiocyanates, thio-ketones, ketones, lactides, and acyl nitriles, forming the four- or five-membered metallaheteroacycles, terminal sulfido, or oxido complexes, and cyanide amidate complexes, respectively. In contrast, after the addition of aldehyde p-tolylCHO, the tetranuclear complex [η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2]4[OCH(p-tolyl)CH(p-tolyl)O]2U4O4 (10) is isolated. However, while 1 is unreactive toward dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC), an equilibrium exists in benzene solution between N,N'-diisopropylcarbodiimide (DIC), 1, and the four-membered metallaheterocycle [η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2]2U[N(p-tolyl)C(═NiPr)N(iPr)] (12). Furthermore, 1 may also engage in single- and two-electron transfer processes. It is singly oxidized by Ph3CN3, CuI, Ph2S2, and Ph2Se2, yielding the uranium(V) imido complexes [η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2]2U═N(p-tolyl)(X) (X = N3 (20), I (22), PhS (23), and PhSe (24)), or is doubly oxidized by organic azides (RN3) and 9-diazofluorene, forming the uranium(VI) bis-imido metallocenes [η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2]2U═N(p-tolyl)(=NR) (R = p-tolyl (18), mesityl (19)) and [η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2]2U=N(p-tolyl)[=NN=(9-C13H8)] (21), respectively.

Synthesis and Structure of [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2Th(bipy) and Its Reactivity toward Small Molecules

Halide exchange of (Cp3tms)2ThCl2 (1; Cp3tms = η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2) with Me3SiI furnishes (Cp3tms)2ThI2 (2), which is then reduced with potassium graphite (KC8) in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridine to give the thorium bipyridyl metallocene (Cp3tms)2Th(bipy) (3) in good yield. Complex 3 was fully characterized and readily reacted with various small molecules. For example, 3 may serve as a synthetic equivalent for the (Cp3tms)2Th(II) fragment when exposed to CuI, Ph2S2, organic azides, and CS2. Moreover, upon the addition of thiobenzophenone Ph2CS, p-methylbenzaldehyde (p-MeC6H4)CHO, benzophenone Ph2CO, amidate PhCONH(p-tolyl), seleno-ketone (p,p'-dimethoxy), selenobenzophenone (p-MeOPh)2CSe, di(p-tolyl)methanimine (p-tolyl)2C═NH, 1,2-di(benzylidene)hydrazine (PhCH═N)2, and nitriles PhCN, PhCH2CN, and Ph2CHCN C-C coupling results to give (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CS)] (8), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (9), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CO)] (10), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-tolylNH)(Ph)CO}] (11), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-MeOPh)2CSe}] (12), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-tolyl)2CNH}] (13), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCHNN═CHPh)] (14), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCN)] (16), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCH2CN)] (17), and (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CHCN)] (18), respectively. However, when thiazole is added to 3, the dimeric sulfido complex [(Cp3tms)2Th]2[μ-(bipy)CH2NCHCHS]2 (15) can be isolated. Moreover, the addition of isonitriles such as Me3CNC and PhCH2NC to 3 results in C-N bond cleavage and C-C coupling processes to form the thorium isocyanido amido complexes (Cp3tms)2Th[4-(Me3C)bipy](NC) (19) and (Cp3tms)2Th[4-(PhCH2)bipy](NC) (20), respectively. Nevertheless, upon exposure of 3 to (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane Me3SiCHN2, the bis-amido complex (Cp3tms)2Th[5,6-(Me3SiCH)bipy] (21), concomitant with N2 release, is isolated.

Four-Electron Oxidative Addition of an N=N Double Bond at a Chromium Metallocyclopropene

This report describes the synthesis of a pseudo-tetrahedral chromium alkyne complex supported by a bidentate phosphinimide ligand and its reactivity with an azobenzene derivative. Characterization of the former by structural and computational methods reveals an unprecedented extent of alkyne activation by a formal chromium(II) center, suggesting that this complex is best described as a chromium(IV)-metallocyclopropene. Exposure of this compound to 4,4'-difluoroazobenzene results in the formation of a chromium(VI) diimido complex, which constitutes a rare 4-electron oxidative addition of an N=N double bond. The isolation of a chromium(IV)-hydrazido intermediate enabled mechanistic investigations of this challenging bond cleavage process. This work substantiates the notion that terminal phosphinimide ligands can engender first-row transition metal ions with exceptional reactivity.

Reactivity of a Lewis base-supported uranium terminal imido metallocene towards small molecules

The Lewis base-supported uranium terminal imido metallocene [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2UN(p-tolyl)(dmap) (1) readily reacts with various small molecules such as internal alkynes, isothiocyanates, thioketones, amidates, organic nitriles and imines, chlorosilanes, copper iodide, diphenyl disulfide, organic azides and diazoalkane derivatives. For example, treatment of 1 with PhCCCCPh and PhNCS forms metallaheterocycles originating from a [2 + 2] cycloaddition to yield [η5-1-(p-tolyl)NC(Ph)CHCC(Ph)CH2Si(Me)2-2,4-(Me3Si)2C5H2][η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]U (2) and [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2U[N(p-tolyl)C(NPh)S](dmap) (3), respectively. The reaction of 1 with the thioketone Ph2CS forms the known uranium sulfido complex [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2US(dmap) (4), which reacts with a second molecule of Ph2CS to give the disulfido compound [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2U(S2CPh2) (5). The imido moiety also promotes deprotonation reactions as illustrated in the reactions with the amide PhCONH(p-tolyl), the nitrile PhCH2CN and the imine (p-tolyl)2CNH to form the bis-amidate [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2U[OC(Ph)N(p-tolyl)]2 (7), and the iminato complexes [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2U[N(p-tolyl)C(CH2Ph)NH](NCCHPh) (8) and [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2U[NH(p-tolyl)][NC(p-tolyl)2] (9), respectively. Addition of PhSiH2Cl to 1 yields [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2U(Cl)[N(p-tolyl)SiH2Ph] (10). In contrast, the uranium(V) imido complexes [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2UN(p-tolyl)(I) (11) and [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2UN(p-tolyl)(SPh) (12), may be isolated upon addition of CuI or Ph2S2 to 1, respectively. Uranium(VI) bis-imido metallocenes [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2UN(p-tolyl)(NR) (R = p-tolyl (13), mesityl (14)) and [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2UN(p-tolyl)[NN(9-C13H8)] (15) are accessible from 1 on exposure to RN3 (R = p-tolyl, mesityl) and 9-diazofluorene, respectively. Complexes 2, 3, 5, and 7-15 were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and, in addition, compounds 2, 3, 5, and 7-13 were structurally authenticated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.

A Comprehensive Study Concerning the Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of Terminal Uranium Oxido, Sulfido, and Selenido Metallocenes

Terminal uranium oxido, sulfido, and selenido metallocenes were synthesized, and their reactivity was comprehensively studied. Heating of an equimolar mixture of [η⁵-1,2,4-(Me₃Si)₃C₅H₂]₂UMe₂ (2) and [η⁵-1,2,4-(Me₃Si)₃C₅H₂]₂U(NH-p-tolyl)₂ (3) in the presence of 4-dimethylaminopyridine (dmap) in refluxing toluene forms [η⁵-1,2,4-(Me₃Si)₃C₅H₂]₂U═N(p-tolyl)(dmap) (4), which is a useful precursor for the preparation of the terminal uranium oxido, sulfido, and selenido metallocenes [η⁵-1,2,4-(Me₃Si)₃C₅H₂]₂U═E(dmap) (E = O (5), S (6), Se (7)) employing a cycloaddition-elimination methodology with Ph₂C═E (E = O, S) or (p-MeOPh)₂CSe, respectively. Metallocenes 5-7 are inert toward alkynes, but they act as nucleophiles in the presence of alkylsilyl halides. The oxido and sulfido metallocenes 5 and 6 undergo [2 + 2] cycloadditions with isothiocyanate PhNCS or CS₂, while the selenido derivative 7 does not. The experimental studies are complemented by density functional theory (DFT) computations.

Progress in solid state and coordination chemistry of actinides in China

In the past decade, the area of solid state chemistry of actinides has witnessed a rapid development in China, based on the significantly increased proportion of the number of actinide containing crystal structures reported by Chinese researchers from only 2% in 2010 to 36% in 2021. In this review article, we comprehensively overview the synthesis, structure, and characterizations of representative actinide solid compounds including oxo-compounds, organometallic compounds, and endohedral metallofullerenes reported by Chinese researchers. In addition, Chinese researchers pioneered several potential applications of actinide solid compounds in terms of adsorption, separation, photoelectric materials, and photo-catalysis, which are also briefly discussed. It is our hope that this contribution not only calls for further development of this area in China, but also arouses new research directions and interests in actinide chemistry and material sciences.

Reduction of Np(VI) with hydrazinopropionitrile via water-mediated proton transfer

Effectively adjusting and controlling the valence state of neptunium (Np) is essential in its separation during spent fuel reprocessing. Hydrazine and its derivatives as free-salts can selectively reduce Np(VI) to Np(V). Reduction mechanisms of Np(VI) with hydrazine and four derivatives have been explored using multiple theoretical methods in our previous works. Herein, we examine the reduction mechanism of Np(VI) with hydrazinopropionitrile (NCCH₂N₂H₃) which exhibits faster kinetics than most other hydrazine derivatives probably due to its σ-π hyperconjugation effect. Free radical ion pathways I, II and III involving the three types of hydrazine H atoms were found that correspond to the experimentally established mechanism of reduction of two Np(VI) via initial oxidation to [NCCH₂N₂H₃]⁺˙, followed by conversion to NCCH₂N₂H (+2H₃O⁺) and ultimately to CH₃CN + N₂. Potential energy profiles suggest that the second redox stage is rate-determining for all three pathways. Pathway I with water-mediated proton transfer is energetically preferred for hydrazinopropionitrile. Analyses using the approaches of localized molecular orbitals (LMOs), quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) elucidate the bonding evolution for the structures on the reaction pathways. The results of the spin density reveal that the reduction of the first Np(VI) ion is the outer-sphere electron transfer, while that of the second Np(VI) ion is the hydrogen transfer. This work offers new insights into the nature of reduction of Np(VI) by hydrazinopropionitrile via water-mediated proton transfer, and provides a basis for designing free-salt reductants for Np separations.

Intrinsic reactivity of [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U(η4-C4Ph2) in small molecule activation

The uranium metallacyclocumulene, [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(η⁴-C₄Ph₂) (3) was isolated from the reaction mixture containing [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂UCl₂ (1), potassium graphite (KC₈) and 1,4-diphenylbutadiyne (PhCC-CCPh) in good yield. The reactivity of 3 towards various small organic molecules was evaluated. For example, while complex 3 shows no reactivity towards alkynes and 2,2'-bipyridine, it may deliver the [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(II) fragment in the presence of Ph₂E₂ (E = S, Se) and Ph₃CN₃, or react as a nucleophile in the presence of carbodiimides, isothiocyanates, aldehydes, ketones, and pyridine derivatives, forming five-, seven- or nine-membered heterometallacycles. On the contrary, addition of Ph₂CS to 3 induces CS bond cleavage yielding the dithiolate complex [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[S₂(C₁₂H₅Ph₅)] (14). In contrast, the closely related, but sterically more encumbered uranium metallacyclocumulene [η⁵-1,2,4-(Me₃Si)₃C₅H₂]₂U(η⁴-C₄Ph₂) (4) features a more limited reactivity which is restricted to mono- and double insertions with small unsaturated organic molecules such as isothiocyanates, ketones and nitriles.

Small-Molecule Activation Mediated by [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U(bipy)

The uranium bipyridyl metallocene, [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(bipy) (2), is readily accessible in good yield by adding potassium graphite (KC₈) to a mixture of [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂UCl₂ (1) and 2,2'-bipyridine. Compound 2 was fully characterized and employed for small-molecule activation. It has been demonstrated that 2 may serve as a synthon for [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(II) fragment in the presence of Ph₂E₂ (E = S, Se), alkynes, and a variety of hetero-unsaturated molecules such as diazabutadienes, azine (Ph₂C═N)₂, o-benzoquinone, pyridine N-oxide, CS₂, isothiocyanates, and organic azides. However, upon exposure of 2 to thio-ketone Ph₂CS, aldehyde p-MePhCHO, ketone Ph₂CO, imine PhCH═NPh, azine (PhCH═N)₂, and nitrile PhCN, it may also promote C-C coupling reactions forming [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(Ph₂CS)] (16), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (17), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(Ph₂CO)] (18), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(PhCHNPh)] (19), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(PhCHNN═CHPh)] (20), and [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(N₂C₁₀H₇C(Ph)NH)] (22), respectively, in quantitative conversion. Furthermore, in the presence of CuI, a single-electron transfer (SET) process is observed to yield the uranium(III) iodide complex [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(I)(bipy) (15).

[AnI3(THF)4] (An = Np, Pu) Preparation Bypassing An0 Metal Precursors: Access to Np3+/Pu3+ Nonaqueous and Organometallic Complexes

Direct comparison of homologous molecules provides a foundation from which to elucidate both subtle and patent changes in reactivity patterns, redox processes, and bonding properties across a series of elements. While trivalent molecular U chemistry is richly developed, analogous Np or Pu research has long been hindered by synthetic routes often requiring scarcely available metallic-phase source material, high-temperature solid-state reactions producing poorly soluble binary halides, or the use of pyrophoric reagents. The development of routes to nonaqueous Np³⁺/Pu³⁺ from widely available precursors can potentially transform the scope and pace of research into actinide periodicity. Here, aqueous stocks of An⁴⁺ (An = Np, Pu) are dehydrated to well-defined [AnCl₄(DME)₂] (DME = 1,2-dimethoxyethane), and then a single-step halide exchange/reduction employing Me₃SiI produces [AnI₃(THF)₄] (THF = tetrahydrofuran) in a high to nearly quantitative crystalline yield (with I₂ and Me₃SiCl as easily removed byproducts). We demonstrate the synthetic utility of these An-iodide molecules, prepared by metal⁰-free routes, through characterization of archetypal complexes including the tris-silylamide, [Np{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃], and bent metallocenes, [An(C₅Me₅)₂(I)(THF)] (An = Np, Pu)─chosen because both motifs are ubiquitous in Th, U, and lanthanide research. The synthesis of [Np{N(Se═PPh₂)₂}₃] is also reported, completing an isomorphous series that now extends from U to Am and is the first characterized Np³⁺-Se bond.

Complexes like Cp'2 Ti(η2 -Me3 SiC2 SiMe3 ) and Cp2 Zr(py)(η2 -Me3 SiC2 SiMe3 ) with Cp' as Cp (cyclopentadienyl) and Cp* (pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) have been considered (py=pyridine). These complexes can liberate a reactive low-valent titanium or zirconium center by dissociation of the ligands and act as ''masked'' MII complexes (M=Ti, Zr). They represent excellent sources for the clean generation of the reactive coordinatively and electronically unsaturated complex fragments [Cp'2 M]. This is the reason why they were used for many synthetic and catalytic reactions during the last years. As an update to several review articles on this topic, this contribution provides an update with recent examples of preparative organometallic and organic chemistry of these complexes, acting as reagents for a wide range of coordinating and coupling reactions. In addition, applications and investigations concerning reaction products derived from this chemistry are mentioned, too.

Insertion Chemistry of Lutetacyclopropene toward Unsaturated C-O/C-N Bonds

Although the reaction chemistry of transition metallacyclopropenes has been well-established in the last decades, the reactivity of rare-earth metallacyclopropenes remains elusive. Herein, we report the reaction of lutetacyclopropene 1 toward a series of unsaturated molecules. The reaction of 1 with one equiv. of PhCOMe, Ar¹ CHO (Ar¹ =2,6-Me₂ C₆ H₃ ), W(CO)₆ , and PhCH=NPh provided oxalutetacyclopentenes, metallacyclic lutetoxycarbene, and azalutetacyclopentene via 1,2-insertion of C=O, C≡O, or C=N bonds into Lu-C_sp2 bond, respectively. However, the reaction between 1 and Ar² N=C=NAr² (Ar² =4-MeC₆ H₄ ) gave an acyclic lutetium complex with a diamidinate ligand by the coupling of one molecule of 1 with two carbodiimides, irrespective of the amount of carbodiimide employed. More interestingly, when 1 was treated with two equiv. of Ar¹ CHO, the reductive coupling of two C=O bonds was discovered to give a lutetium pinacolate complex along with the release of tolan. Remarkably, the reactivity of 1 is significantly different from that of scandacyclopropenes; these metallacycles derived from 1 all represent the first cases in rare-earth organometallic chemistry.

Redox-induced reversible P-P coupling in a uranium complex

A synthesized redox-active multidentate N-P ligand reacted with UCl₄ in the presence of KHMDS or ⁿBuLi, where two novel U(IV) complexes with or without P-P coupling were formed, respectively. The reversible P-P coupling in these complexes was observed in redox-induced reactions.

Synthesis and reactivity of the uranium phosphinidene metallocene [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U([double bond, length as m-dash]P-2,4,6-iPr3C6H2)(OPMe3): influence of the coordinated Lewis base

This paper describes the synthesis and reactivity of [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U([double bond, length as m-dash]P-2,4,6-iPr3C6H2)(OPMe3) (6) which is accessible from a ligand exchange reaction between [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U([double bond, length as m-dash]P-2,4,6-iPr3C6H2)(OPPh3) (2) and Me3PO at ambient temperature. Phosphinidene 6 exhibits no reactivity towards internal alkynes, but readily reacts with various hetero-unsaturated molecules such as isothiocyanates, aldehydes, nitriles, isonitriles, and organic azides, forming uranium sulfido, oxido, imido, and uranaheterocyclic compounds. Nevertheless, with the bidentate ortho-dicyanobenzene o-C6H4(CN)2 the zwitterionic species [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[NHC(N){C6H4CP(2,4,6-iPr3C6H2)CH2PMe2O}] (13) is isolated in good yield. Moreover, 6 converts with Ph2S2 to the uranium(iii) phenylthiolate compound [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2USPh(OPMe3) (7) in good isolated yield. Furthermore, the influence of the Lewis base on the reactivity of the uranium phosphinidene metallocenes has also been evaluated.

Spectroscopic characterization of neptunium(VI), plutonium(VI), americium(VI) and neptunium(V) encapsulated in uranyl nitrate hexahydrate

The coordination of crystalline products resulting from the co-crystallization of Np(vi), Pu(vi), Am(vi), and Np(v) with uranyl nitrate hexahydrate (UNH) has been revealed through solid-state spectroscopic characterization via diffuse reflectance UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, SEM-EDS, and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. Density functional and multireference wavefunction calculations were performed to analyze the An(vi/v)O2(NO3)2·2H2O electronic structures and to help assign the observed transitions in the absorption spectra. EXAFS show a similar coordination between the U(VI) in UNH and Np(vi) and Pu(vi); while Am resulted in a similar coordination to Am(iii), as reduction of Am(vi) occurred prior to EXAFS data being obtained. The co-crystallization of the oxidized transuranic species-penta- and hexavalent-with UNH, represents a significant advance from not only a practical standpoint in providing an elegant solution for used nuclear fuel recycle, but also as an avenue to expand the fundamental understanding of the 5f electronic behavior in the solid-state.

Recent developments in highly basic N-heterocyclic iminato ligands in actinide chemistry

In the last decade, major conceptual advances in the chemistry of actinide molecules and materials have been made to demonstrate their distinct reactivity profiles as compared to lanthanide and transition metal compounds, but some difficult questions remain concerning the intriguing stability of low-valent actinide complexes, and the importance of the 5f-orbitals in reactivity and bonding. The imidazolin-2-iminato moiety has been extensively used in ligands for the advancement of actinide chemistry owing to its unique capability of stabilizing the reactive and highly electrophilic metal ions by virtue of its strong electron donation and steric tunability. The current review article describes recent developments in the chemistry of light actinide metal ions (thorium and uranium) bearing these N-heterocyclic iminato moieties as supporting ligands. In addition, the effect of ring expansion of the N-heterocycle on the catalytic aptitude of the organoactinides is also described herein. The synthesis and reactivity of actinide complexes bearing N-heterocyclic iminato ligands are presented, and promising apposite applications are also presented. The current review focuses on addressing the catalytic behavior of actinide complexes with oxygen-containing substrates such as in the Tishchenko reaction, hydroelementation processes, and polymerization reactions. Actinide complexes have also found new catalytic applications, as demonstrated by the potent chemoselective carbonyl hydroboration and tandem proton-transfer esterification (TPTE) reaction, featuring coupling between an aldehyde and alcohol.

Selective Coupling of Lanthanide Metallacyclopropenes and Nitriles via Azametallacyclopentadiene and η2-Pyrimidine Metallacycle

Exploring new lanthanide metallacycles and finding their unique chemistry different from the analogues of transition metals are of great interest and importance. In this work, we reported the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity toward nitriles of two lanthanide metallacyclopropenes: lutetacyclopropene 2a and dysprosacyclopropene 2b. The selective coupling of 2a and three molecules of PhCN was found for the first time to provide the unexpected fused lutetacycle 3a with one 1,6-dihydropyrimidine ring. Mechanistic studies by DFT calculations reveal that the triple insertion of PhCN into 2a proceeds through four key steps: the insertion of the first PhCN into 2a giving azalutetacyclopentadiene IM1, the insertion of the second PhCN into the Lu-N bond of IM1, the intramolecular electrocyclization providing a highly strained η²-pyrimidine metallacycle, and the insertion of the third PhCN into the Lu-C_sp3 bond. Isolation and characterization of two active intermediates, azalutetacyclopentadiene IM1 and η²-pyrimidine dysprosacycle, provide critical evidence for the formation of 3a. Furthermore, IM1 was also reported to react with TMSCN, isocyanides, or W(CO)₆ to furnish the fused [4,5] lutetacycles. The chemistry of two lanthanide metallacyclopropenes with nitriles is significantly different from these metallacyclopropenes of scandium and other metals. Most notably, the azalutetacyclopentadienes, η²-pyrimidine complex, and other metallacycles all represent the first examples in rare-earth organometallic chemistry; the formation of these new lutetacycles provides concrete evidence for understanding the mechanism of transition metal promoted or catalyzed [2+2+2] cycloaddition between alkynes and nitriles.

Single metal four-electron reduction by U(ii) and masked "U(ii)" compounds

The redox chemistry of uranium is dominated by single electron transfer reactions while single metal four-electron transfers remain unknown in f-element chemistry. Here we show that the oxo bridged diuranium(iii) complex [K(2.2.2-cryptand)]₂[{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U}₂(μ-O)], 1, effects the two-electron reduction of diphenylacetylene and the four-electron reduction of azobenzene through a masked U(ii) intermediate affording a stable metallacyclopropene complex of uranium(iv), [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][U(η ²-C₂Ph₂){N(SiMe₃)₂}₃], 3, and a bis(imido)uranium(vi) complex [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][U(NPh)₂{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃], 4, respectively. The same reactivity is observed for the previously reported U(ii) complex [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][U{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃], 2. Computational studies indicate that the four-electron reduction of azobenzene occurs at a single U(ii) centre via two consecutive two-electron transfers and involves the formation of a U(iv) hydrazide intermediate. The isolation of the cis-hydrazide intermediate [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][U(N₂Ph₂){N(SiMe₃)₂}₃], 5, corroborated the mechanism proposed for the formation of the U(vi) bis(imido) complex. The reduction of azobenzene by U(ii) provided the first example of a "clear-cut" single metal four-electron transfer in f-element chemistry.

Uranium versus Thorium: Synthesis and Reactivity of [η5 -1,2,4-(Me3 C)3 C5 H2 ]2 U[η2 -C2 Ph2 ]

The synthesis, electronic structure, and reactivity of a uranium metallacyclopropene were comprehensively studied. Addition of diphenylacetylene (PhC≡CPh) to the uranium phosphinidene metallocene [η⁵‐1,2,4‐(Me₃C)₃C₅H₂]₂U=P‐2,4,6‐tBu₃C₆H₂ (1) yields the stable uranium metallacyclopropene, [η⁵‐1,2,4‐(Me₃C)₃C₅H₂]₂U[η²‐C₂Ph₂] (2). Based on density functional theory (DFT) results the 5f orbital contributions to the bonding within the metallacyclopropene U‐(η²‐C=C) moiety increases significantly compared to the related Th^IV compound [η⁵‐1,2,4‐(Me₃C)₃C₅H₂]₂Th[η²‐C₂Ph₂], which also results in more covalent bonds between the [η⁵‐1,2,4‐(Me₃C)₃C₅H₂]₂U²⁺ and [η²‐C₂Ph₂]²⁻ fragments. Although the thorium and uranium complexes are structurally closely related, different reaction patterns are therefore observed. For example, 2 reacts as a masked synthon for the low‐valent uranium(II) metallocene [η⁵‐1,2,4‐(Me₃C)₃C₅H₂]₂U^II when reacted with Ph₂E₂ (E=S, Se), alkynes and a variety of hetero‐unsaturated molecules such as imines, ketazine, bipy, nitriles, organic azides, and azo derivatives. In contrast, five‐membered metallaheterocycles are accessible when 2 is treated with isothiocyanate, aldehydes, and ketones.

Reactivity studies involving a Lewis base supported terminal uranium phosphinidene metallocene [η5-1,3-(Me3C)2C5H3]2U(P-2,4,6-iPr3C6H2)(OPMe3)

Small variations in the phosphinidene substituents, but significant change the reactivity of the uranium phosphinidene complexes.

Experimental and Computational Studies on a Base-Free Terminal Uranium Phosphinidene Metallocene

The first stable base‐free terminal uranium phosphinidene metallocene is presented; and its structure and reactivity have been studied in detail and compared to that of the corresponding thorium derivative. Salt metathesis reaction of the methyl iodide uranium metallocene Cp’’’₂U(I)Me (2, Cp’’’=η⁵‐1,2,4‐(Me₃C)₃C₅H₂) with Mes*PHK (Mes*=2,4,6‐(Me₃C)₃C₆H₂) in THF yields the base‐free terminal uranium phosphinidene metallocene, Cp’’’₂U=PMes* (3). In addition, density functional theory (DFT) studies suggest substantial 5f orbital contributions to the bonding within the uranium phosphinidene [U]=PAr moiety, which results in a more covalent bonding between the [Cp’’’₂U]²⁺ and [Mes*P]²⁻ fragments than that for the related thorium derivative. This difference in bonding besides steric reasons causes different reactivity patterns for both molecules. Therefore, the uranium derivative 3 may act as a Cp’’’₂U(II) synthon releasing the phosphinidene moiety (Mes*P:) when treated with alkynes or a variety of hetero‐unsaturated molecules such as imines, thiazoles, ketazines, bipy, organic azides, diazene derivatives, ketones, and carbodiimides.

Incorporation of Boron into Uranium Metallacycles: Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of Boron-Containing Uranacycles Derived from Bis(alkynyl)boranes

The reaction of uranacyclopropene complex (C₅ Me₅ )₂ U[η² -1,2-C₂ (SiMe₃ )₂ ] with B-aryl bis(alkynyl)borane PhB(C≡CPh)₂ led to the first six-membered uranium metallaboracycle, while the reaction with B-amino bis(alkynyl)borane (Me₃ Si)₂ NB(C≡CPh)₂ afforded an unexpected uranaborabicyclo[2.2.0] complex via [2+2] cycloaddition. The reaction with CuCl revealed the non-innocent property of the rearranged bis(alkynyl)boron species towards oxidant. The reactions with isocyanide DippNC: (Dipp=2,6-iPr₂ -C₆ H₃ ) and isocyanate tBuNCO afforded the novel uranaborabicyclo[3.2.0] complexes. All new complexes have been structurally characterized. DFT calculations were performed to provide more insights into the electronic structures and the reaction mechanism.

A Uranium(VI)-Oxo-Imido Dimer Complex Derived from a Sterically Demanding Triamidoamine

The reaction of [UO₂(μ-Cl)₄{K(18-crown-6)}₂] with [{N(CH₂CH₂NSiPrⁱ₃)₃}Li₃] gives [{UO(μ-NCH₂CH₂N[CH₂CH₂NSiPrⁱ₃]₂)}₂] (1), [{(LiCl)(KCl)(18-crown-6)}₂] (2), and [LiOSiPrⁱ₃] (3) in a 1:2:2 ratio. The formation of the oxo-imido 1 involves the cleavage of a N-Si bond and the activation of one of the usually robust U═O bonds of uranyl(VI), resulting in the formation of uranium(VI)-imido and siloxide linkages. Notably, the uranium oxidation state remains unchanged at +6 in the starting material and product. Structural characterization suggests the dominance of a core RN═U═O group, and the dimeric formulation of 1 is supported by bridging imido linkages in a highly asymmetric U₂N₂ ring. Density functional theory analyses find a σ > π orbital energy ordering for the U═N and U═O bonds in 1, which is uranyl-like in nature. Complexes 1-3 were characterized variously by single crystal X-ray diffraction, multinuclear NMR, IR, Raman, and optical spectroscopies; cyclic voltammetry; and density functional theory.

Transformation of carbodiimides to guanidine derivatives facilitated by gallylenes

The reductive coupling of carbodiimides RN[double bond, length as m-dash]C[double bond, length as m-dash]NR (R = 2,6-iPr2C6H3, Cy, iPr) by using [(dpp-bian)GaNa(dme)2] (1); [(dpp-dad)GaNa(thf)3] (2a) and [(dpp-dad)GaK(thf)4Ga(dpp-dad)][K(thf)6] (2b) led to the guanidinate derivatives [(dpp-bian)Ga(NCy)2C[double bond, length as m-dash]NCy][Na(thf)2] (3); [LGaN(R)C(RN)N(R)C(RN)][M] L = dpp-bian, M = Na(dme)2, R = iPr, (4a); L = dpp-dad, M = Na(thf)3, R = iPr, (4b); R = Cy, (4c); M = K(thf)4, (4d); L = dpp-bian, M = Na(dme)2, R = Cy, (4e) and [(dpp-dad)Ga(2,6-iPr2C6H3N)2C][Na(thf)2] (5).

Structures and bonding in [L]M(μ-CCR)2M[L] and [L]M(μ-RC4R)M[L]: requirements for C-C coupling

A theoretical analysis of [L]M(μ-CCR)₂M[L] and [L]M(μ-RC₄R)M[L], where M represents the selected elements from the main group, transition metals, lanthanides and actinides, shows how the central (μ-CCR)₂ and (μ-RC₄R) units reorganize as M traverses across the periodic table. In this context transition metal and actinide complexes are similar in nature, while lanthanide and main group complexes show similarity. The ground state electronic configuration and thus the metal oxidation state control these striking differences. An effective way to stabilize the (iii) oxidation state of thorium in a metallacycle complex is shown for the first time. A strategy is proposed to make a cross-connection between the two sets. The approach used here lends itself to obvious extensions.

δ and φ back-donation in AnIV metallacycles

In all known examples of metal-ligand (M-L) δ and φ bonds, the metal orbitals are aligned to the ligand orbitals in a "head-to-head" or "side-to-head" fashion. Here, we report two fundamentally new types of M-L δ and φ interactions; "head-to-side" δ and "side-to-side" φ back-bonding, found in complexes of metallacyclopropenes and metallacyclocumulenes of actinides (Pa-Pu) that makes them distinct from their corresponding Group 4 analogues. In addition to the known Th and U complexes, our calculations include complexes of Pa, Np, and Pu. In contrast with conventional An-C bond decreasing, due to the actinide contraction, the An-C distance increases from Pa to Pu. We demonstrate that the direct L-An σ and π donations combined with the An-L δ or φ back-donations are crucial in explaining this non-classical trend of the An-L bond lengths in both series, underscoring the significance of these δ/φ back-donation interactions, and their importance for complexes of Pa and U in particular.

Uranium(iv) cyclobutadienyl sandwich compounds: synthesis, structure and chemical bonding

The 1 : 1 reactions of uranium(iv) tetrakis(borohydride) with the sodium and potassium salts of the cyclobutadienyl anion [C₄(SiMe₃)₄]^2- (Cb'''') produce the half-sandwich complexes [Na(12-crown-4)₂][U(η⁴-Cb'''')(BH₄)₃] and [U(η⁴-Cb'''')(μ-BH₄)₃{K(THF)₂}]₂. In the 1 : 2 reaction of U(BH₄)₄ with Na₂Cb'''', formation of [U(η⁴-Cb'''')(η³-C₄H(SiMe₃)₃-κ-(CH₂SiMe₂)(BH₄))]^- reveals that a Cb'''' ligand undergoes an intramolecular deprotonation, resulting in an allyl/tuck-in bonding mode. A computational study reveals that the uranium-Cb'''' bonding has an appreciable covalent component with contributions from the uranium 5f and 6d orbitals.

Preparation of Heterobimetallic Ketimido-Actinide-Molybdenum Complexes

During our attempts to prepare paddlewheel actinide-molybdenum complexes of the type [(X)An(MesNPR₂)₃Mo(CO)₃] (Mes= 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl; X = Cl or I; An = U or Th; R = ⁱPr or Ph) we have found that under certain conditions acetonitrile insertion reactions occur to give the heterobimetallic bridging ketimido species [ClAn(μ-MesNPⁱPr₂)₂(μ-MesNPⁱPr₂{μ-NCMe})Mo(CO)₃] (An = U, 1; Th, 2), [ClAn(μ-MesNPPh₂)₂(μ-MesNPPh₂{μ-NCMe})Mo(CO)₃] (An = U, 3; An = Th, 4), and [IAn(η²-MesNPⁱPr₂)(μ-MesNPⁱPr₂){μ-NC(Me)N(Mes)PⁱPr₂}Mo(CO)₃] (An = U, 5; Th, 6). Structural and spectroscopic data confirm the assignment of a ketimido ligand bridging An(IV) and Mo(0) centers. The isolation of 1-6 is in contrast to our previously reported preparations of [(X)An(MesNPPh₂)₃Mo(CO)₃] (An = U or Th; X= Cl or I; Chem. Commun. 2018, 54, 13515-13518) with the difference in reactivity being attributable to a combination of ancillary phosphino-amide, reaction solvent, and temperature variation. Complexes 1-5 represent the first examples of structurally characterized ketimido-bridged actinide-transition metal linkages and demonstrate the profound differences in reaction outcomes that can occur from relatively minor experimental changes.

Alkaline-earth metallacyclic complexes bearing a diborane-bridged tetraamide ligand: synthesis, structure and fluorescence property

A series of alkaline-earth (Mg, Ca, and Sr) metallacyclic complexes bearing a diborane-bridged tetraamide ligand were achieved for the first time through a clean one-step approach. All of these metallacycles were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. UV-Vis absorption/emission spectroscopy showed deep blue fluorescence of these complexes.
