Abstract
The exploration of short-wave ultraviolet (SUV; λ < 280 nm) transparent phosphates with substantial birefringence is crucial for the advancement of SUV laser industry. Despite their SUV transparency and potential for constructing materials with large birefringence, open-framework (OF) phosphates have rarely been explored for their birefringent properties. Herein, through a systematic exploration in this field, a new ethylenediamine-based OF zincophosphate, Na(C2H10N2)2[Zn3(PO4)2(H0.5PO4)]2 (NEZPO), has been developed. NEZPO exhibits remarkable SUV transparency and significant birefringence (Δn = 0.060 at 546 nm), highlighting the potential for the development of benign SUV crystals within the OF phosphates family.

Abstract
This study pioneers a novel strategy for synthesizing solar-blind ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals through functional groups sequential construction, effectively addressing the inherent trade-offs among broad transmittance, enhanced second-harmonic generation (SHG), and optimal birefringence. We have developed two innovative van der Waals layered germanous phosphites: GeHPO3, the first Ge(II)-based oxide NLO crystal which exhibits a black phosphorus-like structure, and K(GeHPO3)2Br, distinguished by its exceptional birefringence and graphene-like structure. Significantly, GeHPO3 exhibits a remarkable array of NLO properties, including the highest SHG coefficient recorded among all NLO crystals for phase-matching and generating 266 nm coherent light via quadruple frequency conversion. It delivers a potent SHG intensity, surpassing KH2PO4 (KDP) by 10.3 times at 1064 nm and β-BaB2O4 by 1.3 times at 532 nm, complemented by a distinct UV absorption edge at 211 nm and moderate birefringence of 0.062 at 546 nm. Comprehensive theoretical analysis links these exceptional characteristics to the unique NLO-active GeO3 4- units and the distinctive, highly ordered layered structures. Our findings deliver essential experimental insights into the development of Ge(II)-based optoelectronic materials and present a strategic blueprint for engineering structure-driven functional materials with customized properties.

Abstract
The exploration of nonlinear optical crystals with ultraviolet (UV) transparent ranges and easy-to-grow large-size crystals is one of the current research interests. Herein, by combining borate and phosphate groups, a novel congruently melting alkali-mixed metal borophosphate, Li3Na7B4P6O26 (LNBPO) with UV transparency was successfully designed and synthesized using a high-temperature flux method. LNBPO crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric (NCS) and polar orthorhombic space group Pca21 (no. 29), showcasing interesting (B2P3O13)∞ chains along the c axis. Notably, LNBPO has a moderate second harmonic generation (SHG) response (∼0.38 × KDP) and displays a wide transmission ranging from 0.22 to 3.68 μm, as measured by a [001]-oriented crystal wafer. Furthermore, a high-quality single crystal of LNBPO with sizes up to 14 × 14 × 12 mm3 was grown using the top-seeded solution growth method. The refractive indices of LNBPO were determined by applying the minimum deviation angle method. These results show that LNBPO possesses a phase-matching wavelength as short as 483 nm, indicating its potential as a new UV NLO crystal.

Abstract
Birefringence is an important linear optical property of anisotropic crystals that plays a significant role in regulating light polarization. A new bialkali-rare earth metal sulfate, NaRbY2(SO4)4 compound, consisting of non-π-conjugated alkali metals and rare earth metal-centered dodecahedral YO8 has been synthesized. The structure analysis suggests that the three-dimensional (3D) structure of the compound is found to be attributable to the combination of dodecahedral YO8 and tetrahedral SO4 groups with Na+ and Rb+ located in the cavities. The ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared (UV-vis-NIR) spectra reveal that the compound exhibits transparency at a wavelength of less than 200 nm. The observed birefringence of the compound is 0.045@550 nm, which is comparatively larger than that of most deep-ultraviolet (DUV) birefringent crystals. The birefringence mainly originated from the YO8 dodecahedron, which is suggested by first-principles calculations. This research work can provide a useful perspective to explore new DUV sulfates with excellent birefringence.

Abstract
Guided by a superb dual-ions cosubstitution strategy, two novel, highly optically anisotropic hybrid bismuth halides are designed and synthesized. The first compound, Gu3Bi2NO3Cl8 (Gu = C(NH2)3), is developed using the 2D perovskite halide Cs3Bi2Cl9 as the maternal structure. This involved substituting all Cs+ cations with organic Gu+ and replacing some Cl- anions with [NO3]-. Further substitution of Cl- with additional [NO3]- resulted in the formation of nitrate-rich Gu2Bi(NO3)3Cl2 crystal, exhibiting a 3.4-fold increase in [NO3]- per unit volume. Both compounds have a structurally 0D nature, comprising bismuth-centered polyhedra formed by coordinated chlorides and monodentate/bidentate nitrate moieties, with Gu+ serving as a separator and linker. Notably, the presence of superb optically anisotropic dual-ions, i.e., planar Gu+ and [NO3]-, enables these crystals to possess sharply enhanced optical anisotropy, with birefringence values more than 1 order of magnitude higher than that of the initial crystal Cs3Bi2Cl9 (0.162/0.186vs 0.011 at 546 nm). The discovery and characterization of Gu3Bi2NO3Cl8 and Gu2Bi(NO3)3Cl2 crystals provide new insights into achieving expected modifications in optical properties through the utilization of a dual-ions cosubstitution strategy.

Abstract
High-performance nonlinear-optical (NLO) crystals need to simultaneously meet multiple basic and conflicting performance requirements. Here, by using a partial chemical substitution strategy, the first noncentrosymmetric (NCS) PbBeB2O5 crystal with a BeB2O8 group was synthesized, exhibiting a two-dimensional [BeB2O5]∞ layer constructed by interconnecting BeB2O8 groups and bridged PbO4 with an active lone pair. The crystal shows a promising UV NLO functional feature, including a strong SHG effect of 3.5 × KDP (KH2PO4), large birefringence realizing phase matchability in the whole transparency region from 246 to 2500 nm, a short UV absorption edge of 246 nm, and single-crystal easy growth. Remarkably, theoretical studies reveal that the BeB2O8 group has high nonlinear activity, which could stimulate the discovery of a series of excellent NLO beryllium borates.

Abstract
Ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear-optical (NLO) materials are crucial in laser technology due to their ability to modulate light frequency. In this work, when d10 cations, hydroxyl groups, and Cl atoms were combined, a cadmium double salt, Cd(OH)Cl, was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. It has a large phase-matched second-harmonic-generation (SHG) response at 1064 nm (2.5 × KDP) with a short UV-cutoff edge (260 nm), which can be applied in a solar-blind UV band. Theoretical calculations suggest that [Cd(OH)3Cl3] groups lead to a large SHG response. Our work may shed light on the exploration of new NLO materials in metal hydroxyl chlorides.

Abstract
Two new congruently melting Pb-containing halogen silicates, Pb3[O10Pb20](SiO4)4X10 (X = Cl, Br), have been synthesized using a high-temperature solution method. Their crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and both compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Cmca. In both structures, the mirror-symmetric bilayer composed of Pb-O polyhedra is observed for the first time in Pb-containing silicates and belongs to α-PbO derivatives and is related to the Aurivillius phase. Thermal behavior analysis, UV-vis diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy, and IR spectroscopy were also performed. The Pb3[O10Pb20](SiO4)4Cl10 matrix was doped with Eu3+ ions as a dopant, and its potential application in fluorescence was confirmed from the resulting orange-red emission.

Abstract
Natural minerals, with their adaptable framework structures exemplified by perovskite and lyonsite, have sparked substantial interest as potential templates for the design of advanced functional solid-state materials. Nonetheless, the quest for new materials with desired properties remains a substantial challenge, primarily due to the scarcity of effective and practical synthetic approaches. In this study, we have harnessed a synergistic approach that seamlessly integrates first-principles high-throughput screening and crystal engineering to reinvigorate the often-overlooked fresnoite mineral, Ba2 TiOSi2 O7 . This innovative strategy has culminated in the successful synthesis of two superior inorganic UV nonlinear optical materials, namely Rb2 TeOP2 O7 and Rb2 SbFP2 O7 . Notably, Rb2 SbFP2 O7 demonstrates a comprehensive enhancement in nonlinear optical performance, featuring a shortened UV absorption edge (260 nm) and a more robust second-harmonic generation response (5.1×KDP). Particularly striking is its significantly increased birefringence (0.15@546 nm), which is approximately 30 times higher than the prototype Ba2 TiOSi2 O7 (0.005@546 nm). Our research has not only revitalized the potential of the fresnoite mineral for the development of new high-performance UV nonlinear optical materials but has also provided a clearly defined roadmap for the efficient exploration of novel structure-driven functional materials with targeted properties.

Abstract
Large birefringence is a crucial but hard-to-achieve optical parameter that is a necessity for birefringent crystals in practical applications involving modulation of the polarization of light in modern opto-electronic areas. Herein, an oxyanion polymerization strategy that involves the combination of two different types of second-order Jahn-Teller distorted units is employed to realize giant anisotropy in a covalent molybdenum tellurite. Mo(H2O)Te2O7 (MTO) exhibits a record birefringence value for an inorganic UV-transparent oxide crystalline material of 0.528 @ 546 nm, which is also significantly larger than those of all commercial birefringent crystals. MTO has a UV absorption edge of 366 nm and displays a strong powder second-harmonic generation response of 5.4 times that of KH2PO4. The dominant roles of the condensed polytellurite oxyanions [Te8O20]8- in combination with the [MoO6]6- polyhedra in achieving the giant birefringence in MTO are clarified by structural analysis and first-principles calculations. The results suggest that polymerization of polarizability-anisotropic oxyanions may unlock the promise of birefringent crystals with exceptional birefringence.

Abstract
A new guanidinium-templated vanadate, [C(NH2)3]3VO4·2H2O, has been synthesized in a phase-pure form. It crystallizes in a noncentrosymmetric polar space group, Cc, and the crystal structure is built upon a framework of guanidinium, vanadate tetrahedra, and water molecules linked by hydrogen bonds. Notably, optical measurements reveal that the material exhibits an approximately 9.6-fold enhancement in second-harmonic generation efficiency compared to its phosphate analogue. The enhancement can be attributed to the increased geometrical distortion of the VO4 tetrahedra. Furthermore, we found that the coordination number of the central vanadium atom significantly affects the optical band gaps. Among various coordination numbers, the 4-coordinate VO4 tetrahedra are found to be more favorable for widening the optical band gap of materials compared to the 5- and 6-coordinate vanadium polyhedra, as demonstrated by this work.

Abstract
Phosphates, whose obvious disadvantage is the relatively small birefringence, can be overcome by the introduction of post-transition metal cations containing stereochemically active lone-pair electrons. In this paper, two new compounds were successfully explored in the A-Sb-P-O system, i.e. Cs2Sb3O(PO4)3 (CsSbPO) and (NH4)2Sb4O2(H2O)(PO4)2[PO3(OH)]2 (NH4SbPOH). Transmission spectra show that CsSbPO has a surprising transmission range with a UV cutoff edge of 213 nm. First-principles calculations show that both compounds have a wide band gap (5.02 eV for CsSbPO and 5.30 eV for NH4SbPOH) and enlarged birefringence (Δn = 0.034@1064 nm for CsSbPO and Δn = 0.045@1064 nm for NH4SbPOH). The results of real-space atom-cutting investigations show that the distorted [SbOx] polyhedra originating from the asymmetric lone pair electrons give the main contribution to the total birefringence and overcome the disadvantage of small birefringence of phosphates but maintain wide transition windows.

Abstract
Sulfate crystals typically exhibit minimal optical anisotropy due to the near-zero polarizability anisotropy (δ) of [SO4 ]2- tetrahedra, arising from highly symmetrical electron clouds. Recent research sought to enhance δ via chemical modifications, such as fluorination. However, the resultant crystals often maintain subpar optical anisotropy, frequently with birefringence values below 0.1. In this study, we have uncovered that δ can be significantly strengthened by chemically tailoring the tetrahedral [SO4 ]2- with anisotropic π-conjugated modules. This has been demonstrated by several newly proposed S-O-Org (Org: π-conjugated organic species) moieties, which show a sharp increase in δ based on theoretical computations. To further validate this experimentally, we synthesized and characterized six new 3-pyridinesulfonate crystals with the formula A(3-C5 H4 NSO3 ) ⋅ xH2 O (A=Li, Ag, K, Rb, Cs, and NH4 ; x=0 and 1). Notably, these materials exhibit strong optical anisotropy, with birefringence values ranging from 0.240 to 0.312 at 546 nm. These values are approximately 23 to 145.5 times greater than those of corresponding sulfates, and they outperform a vast number of sulfate-related optical materials, thus verifying the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. Furthermore, the title compounds exhibit diverse microstructure peculiarities influenced by the size and binding natures of the counter cations.

Abstract
Traditional nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are exclusively limited to ionic crystals with π-conjugated groups and it is a great challenge to achieve a subtle balance between second-harmonic generation, bandgap, and birefringence for them, especially in the deep-UV spectrum region (Eg > 6.20 eV). Herein, a non-π-conjugated molecular crystal, NH3 BH3 , which realizes such balance with a large second-harmonic generation response (2.0 × KH2 PO4 at 1064 nm, and 0.45 × β-BaB2 O4 at 532 nm), deep-UV transparency (Eg > 6.53 eV), and moderate birefringence (Δn = 0.056@550 nm) is reported. As a result, NH3 BH3 exhibits a large quality factor of 0.32, which is evidently larger than those of non-π-conjugated sulfate and phosphate ionic crystals. Using an unpolished NH3 BH3 crystal, effective second-harmonic generation outputs are observed at different wavelengths. These attributes indicate that NH3 BH3 is a promising candidate for deep-UV NLO applications. This work opens up a new door for developing high-performance deep-UV NLO crystals.

Abstract
The development of urgently-needed ultraviolet (UV)/deep-UV nonlinear optical (NLO) materials has been hindered by contradictory requirements of the microstructure, in particular the need for a strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) response as well as a short phase-matching (PM) wavelength. We herein employ a "de-covalency" band gap engineering strategy to adjust the optical linearity and nonlinearity. This has been achieved by assembling two types of transition-metal (TM) polyhedra ([TaO2 F4 ] and [TaF7 ]), affording the first tantalum-based deep-UV-transparent NLO materials, A5 Ta3 OF18 (A = K (KTOF), Rb (RTOF)). Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the highly ionic bonds and strong electropositivity of tantalum in the two oxyfluorides induce record short PM wavelengths (238 (KTOF) and 240 (RTOF) nm) for d0 -TM-centered oxides, in addition to strong SHG responses (2.8 × KH2 PO4 (KTOF) and 2.6 × KH2 PO4 (RTOF)), and sufficient birefringences (0.092 (KTOF) and 0.085 (RTOF) at 546 nm). These results not only broaden the available strategies for achieving deep-UV NLO materials by exploiting the currently neglected d0 -TMs, but also push the shortest PM wavelength into the short-wavelength UV region.

Abstract
Crystallographically, noncentrosymmetricity (NCS) is an essential precondition and foundation of achieving nonlinear optical (NLO), pyroelectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric materials. Herein, structurally, octahedral [SmCl6]3- is substituted by the acentric tetrahedral polyanion [CdBr4]2-, which is employed as a templating agent to induce centrosymmetric (CS)-to-NCS transformation based on the new CS supramolecule [Cd5P2][SmCl6]Cl (1), thereby providing the NCS supramolecule [Cd4P2][CdBr4] (2). Meanwhile, this replacement further results in the host 2D ∞2[Cd5P2]4+ layers converting to yield the twisted 3D ∞3[Cd4P2]2+ framework, which promotes the growth of bulk crystals. Additionally, phase 2 possesses well-balanced NLO properties, enabling considerable second-harmonic generation (SHG) responses (0.8-2.7 × AgGaS2) in broadband spectra, the thermal expansion anisotropy (2.30) together with suitable band gap (2.37 eV) primarily leading to the favorable laser-induced damage threshold (3.33 × AgGaS2), broad transparent window, and sufficient calculated birefringence (0.0433) for phase-matching ability. Furthermore, the first polyanion substitution of the supramolecule plays the role of templating agent to realize the CS-to-NCS transformation, which offers an effective method to rationally design promising NCS-based functional materials.

Abstract
We define the anisotropic structure building unit that encompasses diverse chemical bonds (ABUCB). The ABUCB is highly likely to cause anisotropy in both crystallographic structure and spatial electron distribution, ultimately resulting in enhanced macroscopic optical anisotropy. Accordingly, the (PO3F)2- or (SO3F)- tetrahedron involving the unique P-F or S-F bond serves as such an ABUCB. The distinct chemical bond effectively alters the microscopic nature of the structure building unit, such as polarizability anisotropy, hyperpolarizability, and geometry distortion; this consequently changes the macroscopic second-order nonlinear optical (2nd-NLO) properties of the materials. In this review, we summarize both typical and newly emerged compounds containing ABUCBs. These compounds encompass approximately 90 examples representing six distinct categories, including phosphates, borates, sulfates, silicates, chalcogenides and oxyhalides. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the presence of ABUCBs in DUV/UV NLO compounds contributes to an increase in birefringence and retention of a large band gap, facilitating phase matching in high-energy short-wavelength spectral ranges. On the other hand, the inclusion of ABUCBs in IR NLO compounds offers a feasible method for increasing the band gap and consequently enhancing the larger laser-induced damage threshold. This review consolidates various trial-and-error explorations and presents a novel strategy for designing 2nd-NLO compounds, potentially offering an opportunity for the development of high-performance 2nd-NLO materials.

Abstract
Borophosphates have become promising candidates for ultraviolet or deep-ultraviolet functional crystals. Through high-temperature solution method, four new borophosphates, K2B2P2O9, (NH4)2BP2O7(OH), K2BP2O7(OH), and P21/c-(NH4)2B2P3O11(OH), were acquired successfully. Single crystal X-ray diffraction suggests that K2B2P2O9, (NH4)2BP2O7(OH), and K2BP2O7(OH) belong to the noncentrosymmetric space group, while P21/c-(NH4)2B2P3O11(OH) belongs to the centrosymmetric compound. It is worth mentioning that K2B2P2O9, (NH4)2BP2O7(OH), and K2BP2O7(OH) present the new fundamental building blocks [B2P2O11], [BP2O10H], and [BP2O9(OH)], respectively, as far as we know. Compared with K2B2P2O9, (NH4)2BP2O7(OH), K2BP2O7(OH), and P21/c-(NH4)2B2P3O11(OH) exhibit a larger optical anisotropy, further confirming the positive effect of hydroxyl groups on birefringence. UV-vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectra display that K2B2P2O9 and (NH4)2BP2O7(OH) have short UV cutoff edges. Meanwhile, theoretical calculations were conducted to comprehend their optical properties and electronic structures.

Abstract
Herein, two new Sb3+-based phosphites, Sb2O2(HPO3) (I) and Sb2O(HPO3)2 (II), were successfully obtained by ingeniously combining Sb3+-based polyhedra containing stereochemically active lone pair (SCALP) and HPO3 polar groups. Both reported compounds exhibit unique 2D van der Waals layered structures, [Sb4O4(HPO3)2]∞ and [Sb2O(HPO3)2]∞, respectively, which favors compounds with large optical anisotropy. Interestingly, the different curvatures of the two layers resulted in the two title compounds showing significantly different birefringences (0.079@546 and 0.046@546 nm, respectively). Both compounds endow wide optical band gaps (4.32 and 4.54 eV, respectively), which indicates their potential as promising ultraviolet (UV) birefringent crystals. The synthesis of the two title compounds enriched Sb3+-based phosphites in the UV region and provided guidance for the subsequent synthesis of superior optical materials.

Abstract
Second-harmonic generation (SHG) response and birefringence stand as fundamental optical properties for nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Up to now, engineering a strong SHG response and substantial birefringence in the sulfamate system has proven to be exceedingly challenging. A novel noncentrosymmetric compound, Sr(NH2SO3)(NO3)·H2O, has been meticulously designed by introducing the (NO3)- group characterized by significant polarizability anisotropy and hyperpolarizability into the polar non-π-conjugated (NH2SO3)- system. This compound exhibits a robust SHG response (5.2 × KDP), ample birefringence (0.077 at 546.1 nm), and a short ultraviolet (UV) absorption edge (290 nm). The linear and nonlinear optical properties can be attributed to the (NO3)- group and the (NH2SO3)- group. This study presents an effective approach that contributes to the design of more composite anionic UV NLO materials with excellent and balanced optical properties.

Abstract
Polymorphs of ZnHPO3·2H2O with centrosymmetry (Cmcm) and noncentrosymmetry (C2) structures were prepared by modified solution evaporation and seed-crystal-induced secondary nucleation methods. In Cmcm-ZnHPO3·2H2O, the zinc atoms are only octahedrally coordinated, while in C2-ZnHPO3·2H2O, they feature both tetrahedral and octahedral coordination. As a result, Cmcm-ZnHPO3·2H2O features a 2D layered structure with lattice water molecules located in the interlayer space, while C2-ZnHPO3·2H2O features a 3D electroneutral framework of tfa topology connected by Zn(1)O4, Zn(2)O6, and HPO3 units. The UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectra associated with Tauc's analyses give a direct bandgap of 4.24 and 4.33 eV for Cmcm-ZnHPO3·2H2O and C2-ZnHPO3·2H2O, respectively. Moreover, C2-ZnHPO3·2H2O exhibits a weak second harmonic generation (SHG) response and a moderate birefringence for phase matching, indicating its potential as a nonlinear optical material. Detailed dipole moment calculation and analysis confirmed that the SHG response mainly derived from the HPO3 pseudo-tetrahedra.

Abstract
Regulating the crystal structure by A-site cation substitution is one of the effective methods to explore high-performance nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Herein, two non-centrosymmetric (NCS) compounds, α-MZnPO4 (M = Li, K) with short UV absorption edges 221 and 225 nm, are obtained by performing A-site cation substitution method. It is noteworthy that α-LiZnPO4 (α-LZPO) achieves >10 times second harmonic generation (SHG) response (2.3 × KDP) enhancement compared with that of α-KZnPO4 (α-KZPO) (0.2 × KDP), which is the only case among phosphates with different A-site cations. By structural comparison, it is found that the A-site cations play important roles for anion rearrangements, and further the structure features of the two compounds by designing two suppositional crystal models as well as performing other theoretical calculations are analyzed. The study confirms the feasibility to design promising NLO materials with strengthen SHG response and structural stability in orthophosphate system.

Abstract
Establishing high performance ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) selenite crystals with well-balanced properties is very challenging attributable to their strong absorption for UV light. Here a rare-earth selenite, Sc(HSeO3 )3 , with excellent UV NLO properties is introduced. Sc(HSeO3 )3 crystallizing in the polar NCS space group, Cc, features a 3D archetiture built up by interconnected ScO6 octahedra and HSeO3 groups. The crystal exhibits remarkably well-balanced UV-NLO functionality, namely, the shortest absorption edge (214 nm) among NLO-active selenites, wide bandgap (5.28 eV), large phase-matchable SHG response (5 × KDP), and sufficiently large birefringence (cal. 0.105 @1064 nm). Detailed DFT calculations have been performed to elucidate the structure-property relationships. This work provides a new example of discovering novel UV NLO selenite materials.

Abstract
The fictive temperature (Tf ) is widely applied to understand the relaxation thermodynamics of a glass; however, its atomic structural origin is still unclear. Here, we report two novel AZnP3 O9 glasses obtained by melting the composition identical single crystals. These glasses exhibit structural inheritance within 5 Å from the single crystal counterparts that is quantified by δ=nglass /ncry (0≤δ≤1, n is the number of pair correlation functions). Among the available glass-formers, glass KZnP3 O9 exhibits the highest structural inheritance (δ=1, nglass =8). More insightfully, a reverse correlation between δ and the relaxation thermodynamic parameters is observed in glass AZnP3 O9 , revealing for the first time the atomic structural origin of fictive temperature.

Abstract
Two novel mixed-alkali-metal selenate nonlinear-optical (NLO) crystals, Na3Li(H2O)3(SeO4)2·3H2O (I) and CsLi3(H2O)(SeO4)2 (II), have been successfully synthesized by an aqueous solution evaporation method. Both compounds feature the unique layers constructed of the same functional moieties including SeO4 and LiO4 tetrahedra: [Li(H2O)3(SeO4)2·3H2O]∞3- layers in I and [Li3(H2O)(SeO4)2]∞- layers in II. The titled compounds display wide optical band gaps of 5.62 and 5.66 eV, respectively, according to the UV-vis spectra. Interestingly, they exhibit significantly different second-order nonlinear coefficients (0.34 × KDP and 0.70 × KDP, respectively). Detailed dipole moment calculations manifest that the large disparity can be attributed to the difference in the dipole moment of the crystallographically independent SeO4 and LiO4 groups. This work confirms that alkali-metal selenate system is an excellent candidate for short-wave ultraviolet NLO materials.

Abstract
Searching on the functional building units with ultrawide band gaps, large hyperpolarizabilities, and strong anisotropies is the key to finding new deep-ultraviolet (DUV) nonlinear-optical (NLO) materials. In this study, the polar covalent tetrahedral unit [SO3(OH)]- is studied by theoretical calculation and its excellent DUV optical properties are revealed. Moreover, we thoroughly investigate the known bisulfates, finding a promising DUV NLO crystal, NaHSO4·H2O. It exhibits a large second-harmonic-generation (SHG) response of 1.5 times that of KH2PO4 and a short cutoff edge (shorter than 190 nm). Meanwhile, it has the largest birefringence of 0.042 at 546 nm among the DUV NLO sulfates. Our study suggests that bisulfates should be fresh and ideal DUV NLO candidates.

Abstract
In order to meet the growing needs for the laser technology and optics industries, the goal is to find suitable fundamental building blocks with large nonlinear-optical (NLO) coefficients and birefringence for an excellent-performance NLO or birefringent system. Via preliminary investigations and calculations, it has been found that the planar π-conjugated group (C9H5O6)- possesses large polarizability anisotropy (δ) and hyperpolarizability (βmax), comparable to well-known groups such as (B3O6)3-, (C3N3O3)3-, etc. Herein, we report a new alkali-metal 3,5-dicarboxybenzoate, KC9H5O6(H2O) (KH2BTC), which crystallized in the acentric space group Pna21. Second-harmonic-generation (SHG) measurements of KH2BTC under 1064 nm laser radiation show that the SHG response of KH2BTC is 1.2 times that of KDP with type I phase-matching behavior. Birefringence measurements show that KH2BTC owns a large birefringence of about 0.372 at 550 nm. The band gap of KH2BTC obtained by ultraviolet (UV) diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy is 3.91 eV, indicating that KH2BTC has potential applications as UV NLO or birefringent materials. Theoretical calculation further confirmed that the impressive optical properties of KH2BTC are derived from the large polarizability anisotropy of the (C9H5O6)- anions.

Abstract
Fluorine-containing compounds have stimulated the exploration of ultraviolet/deep-ultraviolet nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Alkali/alkaline-earth metal phosphates are one of the important potential systems as NLO materials, while the common small birefringence limits the phase-matching (PM) ability in the ultraviolet/deep-ultraviolet region. Herein, by applying a "fluorination synergy-induced enhancement of optical property" strategy, novel structures of phosphate fluoride/fluorophosphate in BePO3F with good thermodynamic/dynamic stability and promising NLO-related properties are discovered via performing crystal structure prediction combined with first-principles calculations. BePO3F-I-VI exhibit relatively large birefringence of 0.025, 0.048, 0.049, 0.049, 0.059, and 0.063 at 1064 nm, respectively. Simultaneously, BePO3F-I (Pc) is a new thermodynamically stable phosphate fluoride which possesses a wide band gap (Eg = 8.03 eV), large second-harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient (d11 = 0.67 pm/V, 1.7 × KDP), and the shortest PM wavelength of 292 nm. Other five thermodynamically metastable noncentrosymmetric (NCS) BePO3F structures (II-VI) belong to fluorophosphates and exhibit deep-ultraviolet PM wavelengths of 187, 183, 186, 188, and 196 nm. It reveals that the aligned nonbonding O 2p orbitals of [BeO2F2] and [PO4] units lead to a large SHG coefficient in the phosphate fluoride BePO3F-I. For fluorophosphates (BePO3F-II-VI), the synergy of [BeO3] planar units and [PO3F] units induces relatively large birefringence. Our research results provide an idea for exploring novel high-performance NLO materials.

Abstract
Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are of importance on extending infrared (IR) laser wavelengths. Considering their performance drawbacks in commercial IR NLO crystals, a recent challenge in exploring new excellent IR NLO crystals is how to break the inherent conflict between a wide bandgap (Eg ≥ 3.0 eV) and large NLO effect (dij ≥ 0.5 × AgGaS2) and simultaneously enlarge the birefringence (Δn) for a requisite phase-matching (PM) behavior. For that reason, rational combination of mixed-anion functional groups into a crystal structure affords the successful design and synthesis of six LnMGa3S6O (Ln = La, Pr, and Nd; M = Ca and Sr) NLO oxysulfides. Among them, LaMGa3S6O satisfy the property-balance demand (Eg: 3.21-3.27 eV and dij: 0.9-1.0 × AgGaS2) as promising PM NLO crystals through gathering their property advantages between LaMGa3O7 and LaMGa3S7 by mixed-anion-oriented performance engineering. A study on the structure-property relationship indicates that heteroleptic (Ln/M)S7O and GaS3O anionic groups are proven as promising NLO-active units and offer a great synergistic effect on the NLO origin. This work as a visualized model not only provides a first clear cognition on varying properties from oxide to sulfide to oxysulfide but also highlights the feasibility of mixed-anion-oriented design of new NLO candidates with balanced performances.

Abstract
A novel guanidinium-templated ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical zinc carbonate crystal, [C(NH2)3]2Zn(CO3)2 (GZCO), has been synthesized in a closed system at low temperatures. GZCO crystallizing in the tetragonal noncentrosymmetric nonpolar space group, P41212 exhibits a three-dimensional anionic framework constructed by interconnected [Zn6C6O32] 12-membered ring channels with inorganic CO3 triangles and ZnO4 tetrahedra. Notably, the anhydrous GZCO shows a very high thermal stability among guanidine-based hybrid NLO materials benefiting from the confinement effect of the organic cations within inorganic channels. The UV-visible transmittance spectrum reveals that GZCO has a short UV cutoff edge of 210 nm, corresponding to the large band gap of 5.9 eV. GZCO exhibits a mild second-harmonic generation efficiency of 0.5 × KH2PO4 with type-I phase-matching behavior.

Abstract
Revealing the interaction between electrons and phonons, e.g., electron-phonon coupling or decoupling, is a great challenge for physics and functional material communities. For rare-earth single crystals, the electron-phonon coupling and fluorescence behaviors strongly depend on the crystal structure and constituent motifs. Here, we proposed a universal "quasi-free O" as an effective structural motif to enhance phonon-assisted electronic transitions and photoluminescence. Using Gd3+ ion as a probe, we studied Gd:La2CaB10O19 (Gd:LCB) and GdMgB5O10 (GdMB) crystals composed of double B-O layers and dangling "quasi-free O", respectively, which enable strengthened phonon-involved luminescence. Especially, a GdMB crystal features an infinite [O-Gd-O-Gd-O] chain (O represents quasi-free oxygen), thus greatly promoting the energy transfer and electron-phonon coupling effect. As a result, its Huang-Rhys S factor is two times larger than that of a Gd:LCB crystal under room temperature. These results put forward "quasi-free O" to improve the electron-phonon coupling intensity and allow LCB and GdMB crystals to serve as potential hosts for phonon-terminated vibronic lasers.

Abstract
Borophosphates are very known for the short ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edge and have become the promising UV and deep-UV functional crystals candidates; however, tetrahedral [PO4] and [BO4] groups own weak anisotropy of polarizability and are not conducive to large birefringence, which hinders their application in the short-wavelength region. Improving their birefringence without compromising the band gap is the main research objective. By introducing the excellent birefringent functional groups, such as [B2O5], [BO2]∞ chain, [B2Ox(OH)5-x], and so forth into borophosphates, seven borophosphates with improved birefringence were successfully synthesized (Δn > 0.05@532 nm). Remarkably, among them, the centimeter-sized crystal of Rb3B8PO16 with a short deep-UV cutoff edge (175 nm) and large birefringence (Δn(exp.) ∼ 0.072@589.3 nm) exhibits the shortest phase-matching wavelength (222 nm), which makes Rb3B8PO16 a promising UV NLO crystal, while KB6PO10(OH)4 with deep-UV cutoff edge features the largest birefringence (Δn(exp.) ∼ 0.103@546 nm) in the reported borophosphate system, making KB6PO10(OH)4 a promising deep-UV birefringent crystal. This study not only provides feasible strategies for increasing the birefringence of borophosphates but also pushes phase-matching into the short-wavelength region.

Abstract
Although phosphates are a rich source of deep-ultraviolet optical materials, the realization of large optical anisotropy in them still remains a challenge because of the small polarizability anisotropy of [PO4] units. Inspired by the fluoridation strategy and hydrogen bond interaction, a new metal-free monofluorophosphate, (N2H6)[HPO3F]2, was synthesized, which exhibits a large birefringence (cal. 0.077) and wide band gap (∼6.51 eV). Such a large birefringence in (N2H6)[HPO3F]2 sets a new record among available fluorophosphates, and the [HPO3F] unit is theoretically confirmed to be a new birefringence-active unit.

Abstract
The phase matching ability is a key factor for nonlinear optical crystals to realize coherent output. Herein, a new design strategy combining ultraviolet and infrared functional groups into a ferroelectric was put forward. Thus, a phosphogermanate crystal, KGeOPO4, was designed and studied. It exhibits a wide transparency window (0.22-9.70 μm), a strong second harmonic generation response (5× KH2PO4), a high laser-induced damage threshold (1.61 GW/cm2), and the typical ferroelectricity (coercive field ∼ 9.8 kV/cm and remnant polarization ∼7.6 μC/cm2). In the infrared region, it could realize coherent output by the birefringence phase matching method, while it could generate ultraviolet coherent lights by the quasi-phase matching technique. Therefore, this work designs a promising ultraviolet-infrared nonlinear optical crystal and provides a new perspective for exploring nonlinear optical crystals.

Abstract
Discovering novel sulfate optical materials with strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) and large birefringence is confronted by a great challenge attributed to the intrinsically weak polarizability and optical anisotropy of tetrahedral SO4 groups. Herein, two superior-performing sulfate optical materials, namely, noncentrosymmetric Hg3 O2 SO4 and centrosymmetric CsHgClSO4 ⋅ H2 O, have been successfully synthesized through the introduction of a highly polarizable d10 metal cation, Hg2+ . The unique component layers in the reported compounds, [Hg3 O2 SO4 ]∞ layers in Hg3 O2 SO4 and [HgClSO4 (H2 O)] ∞ - layers in CsHgClSO4 ⋅ H2 O, induce enlarged birefringence in each sulfate. Remarkably, Hg3 O2 SO4 exhibits a very large SHG response (14 times that of KH2 PO4 ), which is the strongest efficiency among all the reported nonlinear optical sulfates. Detailed theoretical calculations confirm that the employment of highly polarizable Hg2+ is an effective strategy to design superior optical materials with large birefringence and strong SHG response.

Abstract
SO4 tetrahedral groups have weak polarization anisotropy, which thus results in the small birefringence of sulfates. Here, we report new sulfate CsY(SO4)2·4H2O with unprecedented birefringence among deep-ultraviolet (deep-UV) sulfates. Its single crystal (10 mm × 3.5 mm × 1.5 mm) was simply grown by an aqueous solution evaporation technique, and it features a rare layered structure composed of YO9 polyhedra, SO4 tetrahedra, and H2O molecules. Interestingly, each SO4 group donates two oxygen atoms to edge-share with one adjacent YO9 polyhedron and thus causes severe distortion of these groups. The characteristic edge-sharing mode gives CsY(SO4)2·4H2O a large birefringence of ∼0.045@546 nm, which is the maximum among deep-UV sulfates and phosphates with similar non-π-conjugated anionic groups. The ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared diffuse reflection and transmission spectra, infrared spectrum, thermal stability, and theoretical calculations are also presented. The fascinating results will improve our understanding of sulfates and may provide useful insights into the exploration of deep-UV sulfates with large birefringence.

Abstract
Accurately designing and synthesizing new deep-ultraviolet (deep-UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals that are limited by the so-called "200 nm wall" on their transparency windows remain challenging. On the basis of a bandgap-directed computer-aided material design approach, two new NLO sulfates, KMgSO4F and KZnSO4F, are designed and successfully synthesized. They feature three-dimensional frameworks closely related to the commercial NLO crystal, KTiOPO4 (KTP). Remarkably, the transmittance spectrum based on a single crystal indicates that the transparency window of KZnSO4F is significantly blue-shifted to <190 nm from 350 nm for KTP. The microscopic origin of this significant transparent window blue shift is illustrated well by first-principles calculations. This work pushes the transparency windows of KTP-like NLO sulfates into the deep-UV spectral region for the first time and will pave a prospective way to the accurate design and synthesis of new deep-UV NLO materials.

Abstract
A series of M6PS5X (M = Ag, Cu; X = Cl, Br) nonlinear optical (NLO) chalcohalides with special MS3X ligands have been synthesized in this work. Their critical optical performances were systematically measured and the research results show that all of them exhibit strong NLO responses (2.0-2.7 × commercial AgGaS2) and high laser-damage thresholds (1.7-2.3 × AgGaS2), indicating their potential application as good NLO candidates. Furthermore, first-principles calculations were used to study their inherent structure-property relationships and chalcohalides can be expected to be optimal systems for the exploration of new promising IR NLO crystals.

Abstract
The targeted synthesis of deep-ultraviolet (deep-UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, especially those with non-π-conjugated sulfates, has experienced considerable difficulties due to the need to reconcile the oft-competing requirements for deep-UV transparency and strong second-harmonic generation (SHG). We report herein the designed synthesis of the first rare-earth metal-based deep-UV sulfate La(NH4 )(SO4 )2 by a double-salt strategy involving introduction of complementary cations, together with optical studies that reveal a short-wavelength deep-UV absorption edge (below 190 nm) and the strongest SHG response among deep-UV NLO sulfates (2.4×KDP). Theoretical calculations and crystal structure analysis suggest that the excellent balance between SHG response and deep-UV transparency can be attributed to a synergistic interaction of the hetero-cations La3+ and [NH4 ]+ , which optimize alignment of the [SO4 ] tetrahedra and highly polarizable [LaO8 ] polyhedra.
