Designed Conformation and Fluorescence Properties of Self-Assembled Phenazine-Cored Platinum(II) Metallacycles

Tunable Nano-Bending Structures of Loosened/Tightened Lassos with Bi-Stable Vibration-Induced Emissions for Multi-Manipulations of White-Light Emissions and Sensor Applications

The first tunable nano-bending structures of [1]rotaxane containing a single-fluorophoric N,N'-diphenyl-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine (DPAC) moiety (i.e., [1]RA) are developed as a loosened lasso structure to feature the bright white-light emission [CIE (0.27, 0.33), Φ = 21.2%] in THF solution, where bi-stable states of bending and twisted structures of DPAC unit in [1]RA produce cyan and orange emissions at 480 and 600 nm, respectively. With acid/base controls, tunable loosened/tightened nano-loops of corresponding [1]rotaxanes (i.e., [1]RA/[1]RB) can be achieved via the shuttling of macrocycles reversibly, and thus to adjust their respective white-light/cyan emissions, where the cyan emission of [1]RB is obtained due to the largest conformational constraint of DPAC moiety in its bending form of [1]RB with a tightened lasso structure. Additionally, the non-interlocked analog M-Boc only shows the orange emission, revealing the twisted form of DPAC fluorophore in M-Boc without any conformational constraint. Moreover, the utilization of solvents (with different viscosities and polarities), temperatures, and water fractions could serve as effective tools to adjust the bi-stable vibration-induced emission (VIE) colors of [1]rotaxanes. Finally, tuning ratiometric emission colors of adaptive conformations of DPAC moieties by altering nano-bending structures in [1]rotaxanes and external stimuli can be further developed as intelligent temperature and viscosity sensor materials.

Light Induced Proton Coupled Charge Transfer Triggers Counterion Directional Translocation

We demonstrate directed translocation of ClO4 - anions from cationic to neutral binding site along the synthetized BPym-OH dye molecule that exhibits coupled excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer (ESIPT) and charge-transfer (CT) reaction (PCCT). The results of steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy together with computer simulation and modeling show that in low polar toluene the excited-state redistribution of electronic charge enhanced by ESIPT generates the driving force, which is much stronger than by CT reaction itself and provides more informative gigantic shifts of fluorescence spectra signaling on ultrafast ion motion. The associated with ion translocation red-shifted fluorescence band (at 750 nm, extending to near-IR region) appears at the time ~83 ps as a result of electrochromic modulation of PCCT reaction. It occurs at substantial delay to PCCT that displayed fluorescence band at 640 nm and risetime of <200 fs. Thus, it becomes possible to visualize the manifestations of light-triggered ion translocation and of its driving force by fluorescence techniques and to separate them in time and energy domains.

Multimode Stimuli-Responsive Room-Temperature Phosphorescence Achieved by Doping Butterfly-like Fluorogens into Crystalline Small-Molecular Hosts

Materials with stimuli-responsive purely organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) exempt from exquisite molecular design and complex preparation are highly desirable but still relatively rare. Moreover, most of them work in a single switching mode. Herein, we employ a versatile host-guest-doped strategy to facilely construct efficient RTP systems with multimode stimuli-responsiveness without ingenious molecular design. By conveniently doping butterfly-like guests, namely, N,N'-diphenyl-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazines (DPACs), featured with vibration-induced emission into the small-molecular hosts via various methods, RTP systems with finely tunable photophysical properties are readily obtained. Through systematic mechanistic studies and with the aid of a series of control experiments, we unveil the critical role of the host crystallinity in achieving efficient RTP. By virtue of the inherent environmental sensitivity of both RTP and fluorescence of the DPACs, our systems exhibit multiple-stimuli-responsiveness with the luminescence not only switching between the fluorescence and phosphorescence but also continuously changing in the fluorescence color. Advanced dynamic anticounterfeiting and multilevel information encryption is thereby realized.

Solvation controlled excited-state dynamics in a donor-acceptor phenazine-imidazole derivative

In the past few decades, significant efforts have been devoted to developing phenazine derivatives in various fields such as medicine, pesticides, dyes, and conductive materials owing to their highly Stokes-shifted fluorescence and distinctive photophysical properties. The modulation of the surrounding environment can effectively influence the luminescent behavior of phenazine derivatives, prompting us to investigate the solvent effect on the excited state dynamics. Herein, we present the solvent controlled excited state dynamics of a novel triphenylamine-based phenazine-imidazole molecule (TPAIP) through steady-state spectra and femtosecond transient absorption spectra. The fluorescence emission spectrum exhibited a redshift with increasing solvent polarity, indicating the existence of a charge transfer state. Furthermore, by tracking the femtosecond transient absorption spectra of TPAIP, we found that the nature of the relaxed S1 state was strongly influenced by the solvent polarity: intersystem crossing character appears in apolar solvent, whereas intramolecular charge transfer character occurs in polar solvent because of solvation. These findings provide significant theoretical insights into the impact of solvents on the excited state dynamics within phenazine derivatives. This understanding supports diverse applications ranging from advanced biological probe design to photocatalysis and pharmaceutical research.

Tuning vibration-induced emission through macrocyclization and catenation

In order to investigate the effect of macrocyclization and catenation on the regulation of vibration-induced emission (VIE), the typical VIE luminogen 9,14-diphenyl-9,14-dihydrodibenzo[a, c]phenazine (DPAC) was introduced into the skeleton of a macrocycle and corresponding [2]catenane to evaluate their dynamic relaxation processes. As investigated in detail by femtosecond transient absorption (TA) spectra, the resultant VIE systems revealed precisely tunable emissions upon changing the solvent viscosity, highlighting the key effect of the formation of [2]catenane. Notably, the introduction of an additional pillar[5]arene macrocycle featuring unique planar chirality endows the resultant chiral VIE-active [2]catenane with attractive circularly polarized luminescence in different states. This work not only develops a new strategy for the design of new luminescent systems with tunable vibration induced emission, but also provides a promising platform for the construction of smart chiral luminescent materials for practical applications.

Cross-catenation between position-isomeric metallacages

The study of cross-catenated metallacages, which are complex self-assembly systems arising from multiple supramolecular interactions and hierarchical assembly processes, is currently lacking but could provide facile insights into achieving more precise control over low-symmetry/high-complexity hierarchical assembly systems. Here, we report a cross-catenane formed between two position-isomeric Pt(II) metallacages in the solid state. These two metallacages formed [2]catenanes in solution, whereas a 1:1 mixture selectively formed a cross-catenane in crystals. Varied temperature nuclear magnetic resonance experiments and time-of-flight mass spectra are employed to characterize the cross-catenation in solutions, and the dynamic library of [2]catenanes are shown. Additionally, we searched for the global-minimum structures of three [2]catenanes and re-optimized the low-lying structures using density functional theory calculations. Our results suggest that the binding energy of cross-catenanes is significantly larger than that of self-catenanes within the dynamic library, and the selectivity in crystallization of cross-catenanes is thermodynamic. This study presents a cross-catenated assembly from different metallacages, which may provide a facile insight for the development of low-symmetry/high-complexity self-assemble systems.

Modulating the Luminescence, Photosensitizing Properties, and Mitochondria-Targeting Ability of D-π-A-Structured Dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazines

Herein, pyridinium and 4-vinylpyridinium groups are introduced into the VIE-active N,N'-disubstituted-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazines (DPAC) framework to afford a series of D-π-A-structured dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazines in consideration of the aggregation-benefited performance of the DPAC module and the potential mitochondria-targeting capability of the resultant pyridinium-decorated DPACs (DPAC-PyPF6 and DPAC-D-PyPF6). To modulate the properties and elucidate the structure-property relationship, the corresponding pyridinyl/4-vinylpyridinyl-substituted DPACs, i.e., DPAC-Py and DPAC-D-Py, are designed and studied as controls. It is found that the strong intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) effect enables the effective separation of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of DPAC-PyPF6 and DPAC-D-PyPF6, which is conducive to the generation of ROS. By adjusting the electron-accepting group and the π-bridge, the excitation, absorption, luminescence, photosensitizing properties as well as the mitochondria-targeting ability can be finely tuned. Both DPAC-PyPF6 and DPAC-D-PyPF6 display large Stokes shifts (70-222 nm), solvent-dependent absorptions and emissions, aggregation-induced emission (AIE), red fluorescence in the aggregated state (λem = 600-650 nm), aggregation-promoted photosensitizing ability with the relative singlet-oxygen quantum yields higher than 1.10, and a mitochondria-targeting ability with the Pearson coefficients larger than 0.85. DPAC-D-PyPF6 shows absorption maximum at a longer wavelength, slightly redder fluorescence and better photosensitivity as compared to DPAC-PyPF6, which consequently leads to the higher photocytotoxicity under the irradiation of white light as a result of the larger π-conjugation.

A nanomedicine based on stoichiometric coordination of camptothecin and organoplatinum (II) for synergistic antitumor therapy

Precise combination therapy, involving multiple chemotherapeutics with pharmacologically synergistic antitumor effects, is a promising approach to address the challenge of monotherapy with insufficient activity towards their targets of interest. We employed Pt←pyridine coordination-driven assembly to construct a stoichiometric coordination complex of camptothecin and organoplatinum (II) (Pt-CPT). The Pt-CPT complex exhibited a remarkable synergistic effect toward several tumor cell lines, which is equal to the optimal synergistic effect of (PEt3)2Pt(OTf)2 (Pt) and CPT mixture at various ratios. An amphiphilic polymer with H2O2-responsiveness and glutathione (GSH)-depleting ability (PO) was used to encapsulate Pt-CPT complex to enable the nanomedicine (Pt-CPT@PO) with prolonged blood circulation and elevated tumor accumulation. The Pt-CPT@PO nanomedicine exhibited remarkable synergistic antitumor efficacy and antimetastatic effect on a mice orthotopic breast tumor model. This work demonstrated the potential of stoichiometric coordination-driven assembly of organic therapeutics with metal-based drugs in developing advanced nanomedicine with optimal synergistic antitumor activity. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: : In this study, for the first time, we employed Pt←pyridine coordination-driven assembly to construct a stoichiometric coordination complex of camptothecin and organoplatinum (II) (Pt-CPT), with an optimal synergistic effect at various ratios. Phenylthiol-BODIPY-based supramolecular metallacycles for synergistic tumor chemo-photodynamic therapy

The development of more effective tumor therapy remains challenging and has received widespread attention. In the past decade, there has been growing interest in synergistic tumor therapy based on supramolecular coordination complexes. Herein, we describe two triangular metallacycles (1 and 2) constructed by the formation of pyridyl boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-platinum coordination. Metallacycle 2 had considerable tumor penetration, as evidenced by the phenylthiol-BODIPY ligand imparting red fluorescent emission at ∼660 nm, enabling bioimaging, and transport visualization within the tumor. Based on the therapeutic efficacy of the platinum(II) acceptor and high singlet oxygen (¹O₂) generation ability of BODIPY, 2 was successfully incorporated into nanoparticles and applied in chemo-photodynamic tumor therapy against malignant human glioma U87 cells, showing excellent synergistic therapeutic efficacy. A half-maximal inhibitory concentration of 0.35 μM was measured for 2 against U87 cancer cells in vitro. In vivo experiments indicated that 2 displayed precise tumor targeting ability and good biocompatibility, along with strong antitumor effects. This work provides a promising approach for treating solid tumors by synergistic chemo-photodynamic therapy of supramolecular coordination complexes.

Fluorescent cyclophanes and their applications

With the serendipitous discovery of crown ethers by Pedersen more than half a century ago and the subsequent introduction of host-guest chemistry and supramolecular chemistry by Cram and Lehn, respectively, followed by the design and synthesis of wholly synthetic cyclophanes-in particular, fluorescent cyclophanes, having rich structural characteristics and functions-have been the focus of considerable research activity during the past few decades. Cyclophanes with remarkable emissive properties have been investigated continuously over the years and employed in numerous applications across the field of science and technology. In this Review, we feature the recent developments in the chemistry of fluorescent cyclophanes, along with their design and synthesis. Their host-guest chemistry and applications related to their structure and properties are highlighted.

Dynamic Timing Control over Multicolor Molecular Emission by Temporal Chemical Locking

Dynamic control over molecular emission, especially in a time-dependent manner, holds great promise for the development of smart luminescent materials. Here we report a series of dynamic multicolor fluorescent systems based on the time-encoded locking and unlocking of individual vibrational emissive units. The intramolecular cyclization reaction driven by adding chemical fuel acts as a chemical lock to decrease the conformational freedom of the emissive units, thus varying the fluorescence wavelength, while the resulting chemically locked state can be automatically unlocked by the hydrolysis reaction with water molecules. The dynamic molecular system can be driven by adding chemical fuels for multiple times. The emission wavelength and lifetime of the locking states can be readily controlled by elaborating the molecular structures, indicating this strategy as a robust and versatile way to modulate multi-color molecular emission in a time-encoded manner.

Perylene Bisimide-Cored Supramolecular Coordination Complexes: Interplay between Ensembles, Excited State Processes, and Aggregation Behaviors

Manipulating the optical properties of fluorescent species is challenging owing to complicated and tedious synthetic works. Herein, the photophysical properties of perylene bisimide (PBI) were effectively tuned by varying the geometrical arrangement of PBI moieties within supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs), where a PBI-based dicycle (2) and a trigonal prism (3) were generated via using a typical 90° Pt(II) reagent, cis-(PEt₃ )₂ Pt(OTf)₂ -based coordination-driven self-assembly approach. The ligand, an ortho-tetrapyridiyl-PBI (1), exhibits a moderate fluorescence quantum yield (∼13 %) and efficient inter-system crossing (ISC). 2, however, is much more emissive with a fluorescence quantum yield of ∼41 %, and the relevant ISC process is significantly hindered. The fluorescence quantum yield of 3 is merely ∼6 % due to the observed symmetry-breaking charge separation (SB-CS), which turns to triplet state upon charge recombination. Interestingly, 3 could be fully transformed into 2 by simply adding a suitable amount of a 90° Pt(II)-based neutral triangle. Moreover, 2 tends to form discrete dimers both in crystal and solution states, but 3 does not show the property. Therefore, controlling geometrical arrangement of fluorophores through coordination-driven self-assembly could be taken as another effective way to tune their excited state relaxation pathways and construct high-performance optical molecular materials, which generally have to be prepared via organic synthesis.

Combination of Two Colorless Fluorophores for Full-Color Red-Green-Blue Luminescence

Herein, a molecular pixel system for full-color luminescence reproduction is achieved by adjusting the colorless mixtures of two matching fluorophores, i.e., polarity-insensitive 9,14-diphenyl-9,14-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine (DPAC) as the fixed red primary color and polarity-sensitive dansylamide (DSA) as dynamic blue to green primary colors. DPAC and DSA possess independent emission properties free from electron and energy transfer crosstalk between them because of their close frontier molecular orbitals as well as similar absorptions below 400 nm. According to the additive color theory, under diverse mixing ratios and various polarities, a smooth emission color change is realized in the triangle surrounded by the luminophores in the chromaticity diagram with accurate prediction and expedient reproduction. The principle of this system may open an innovative route for the development of powerful full-color luminescent materials, for example, ratiometric fluorescent polarity sensors and invisible fluorescent crayons.

Self-Assembled Manganese(I)-Based Selenolato-Bridged Tetranuclear Metallorectangles: Host-Guest Interaction, Anticancer, and CO-Releasing Studies

Supramolecular one-step self-assembly of dimanganese decacarbonyl, diaryl diselenide, and linear dipyridyl ligands (L = pyrazine (pz), 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy), and trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe)) has resulted in the formation of selenolato-bridged manganese(I)-based metallorectangles. The synthesis of tetranuclear Mn(I)-based metallorectangles [{(CO)₃Mn(μ-SeR)₂Mn(CO)₃}₂(μ-L)₂] (1-6) was facilitated by the oxidative addition of diaryl diselenide to dimanganese decacarbonyl with the simultaneous coordination of linear bidentate pyridyl linker in an orthogonal fashion. Formation of metallorectangles 1-6 was ascertained using IR, UV-vis, NMR spectroscopic techniques, and elemental analyses. The molecular mass of compounds 2, 4, and 6 were determined by ESI-mass spectrometry. Solid-state structural elucidation of 2, 3, and 6 by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods revealed a rectangular framework wherein selenolato-bridges and pyridyl ligands define the shorter and longer edges, respectively. Also, the guest binding capability of metallorectangles 3 and 5 with different aromatic guests was studied using UV-vis absorption and emission spectrophotometric titration methods that affirmed strong host-guest binding interactions. The formation of the host-guest complex between metallorectangle 3 and pyrene has been explicitly corroborated by the single-crystal X-ray structure of 3•pyrene. Moreover, select metallorectangles 1-4 and 6 were studied to explore their anticancer activity, while CO-releasing ability of metallorectangle 2 was further appraised using equine heart myoglobin assay.

A Vibration-Induced-Emission-Based Fluorescent Chemosensor for the Selective and Visual Recognition of Glucose

The development of chemosensors to detect analytes in biologically relevant solutions is a challenging task. We report the synthesis of a fluorescent receptor that combines vibration-induced emission (VIE) and dynamic covalent chemistry for the detection of glucose in aqueous media. We show that the bis-2-(N-methylaminomethyl)phenylboronic acid-decorated N,N'-diphenyl-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine (DPAC) receptor 1 can detect glucose and discriminate between closely related monosaccharides including those commonly found in blood. Preliminary studies suggest monosaccharides bind to the DPAC-receptor with a 1:1 stoichiometry to produce pseudomacrocyclic complexes, which in turn leads to distinct optical changes in the fluorescent emission of the receptor for each host. Moreover, the complexation-induced change in emission can be detected visually and quantified in a ratiometric way. Our results highlight the potential of VIE-type receptors for the quantitative determination of saccharides in biological samples.

Drum-like Metallacages with Size-Dependent Fluorescence: Exploring the Photophysics of Tetraphenylethylene under Locked Conformations

Materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties are of growing interest due to their widespread applications. AIEgens, such as tetraphenylethylene units, display varying emission behaviors during their conformational changes. However, the structure-property relationships of the intermediate conformations have rarely been explored. Herein, we show that the conformational restriction on TPE units can affect the structural relaxation in the excited state and the resulting photophysical behaviors. Specifically, three metallacages of different sizes were prepared via the coordination-driven self-assembly of a TPE-based tetrapyridyl donor with length-increasing Pt(II) acceptors. While the metallacages share similar scaffolds, they exhibit a trend of red-shifted fluorescence and attenuated quantum yield with the increase of their sizes. Furthermore, spectroscopic and computational studies together with a control experiment were conducted, revealing that the degree of cage tension imposed on the excited-state conformational relaxation of TPE moieties resulted in their distinct photophysical properties. The precise control of conformation holds promise as a strategy for understanding the AIE mechanism as well as optimizing the photophysical behaviors of materials on the platform of supramolecular coordination complexes.

Modular Synthesis of Pentagonal and Hexagonal Ring-Fused NBN-Phenalenes Leading to an Excited-State Aromatization-Induced Structural Planarization Molecular Library

Although polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with a nitrogen-boron-nitrogen (NBN) moiety have recently attracted tremendous interest due to their intriguing electronic and optoelectronic properties, all of the NBN-fused π-systems reported to date are called NBN-dibenzophenalenes and were synthesized by electrophilic aromatic substitution. The synthesis of NBN-phenalenes remains challenging, and transition-metal catalysis has never been utilized to construct NBN-embedded π-scaffolds. Herein, a palladium-catalyzed cyclization/bicyclization strategy was developed for the synthesis of diverse pentagonal and hexagonal ring-fused NBN-phenalenes and half-NBN-phenalenes. All of the NBN-embedded π-scaffolds presented in our paper are fluorescent in both solution and the solid state. Further investigations showed that the five-membered NBN rings exhibit the properties of traditional luminogens, while those with a six-membered NBN ring generally undergo photoinduced structural planarization (PISP) and exhibit different colors and quantum yields of fluorescence with different concentrations in solution. Time-resolved spectroscopy and TD-DFT calculations revealed that excited-state aromatization is the driving force for PISP in hexagonal ring-fused NBN-π systems, leading to the formation of excimers. Notably, the scope of PISP compounds is still quite limited, and PISP has never been observed in NBN-π systems before. These hexagonal ring-fused NBN-π systems constitute a novel PISP molecular library and appear to be a new class of aggregation-induced excimer emission (AIEE) materials. Finally, the AIEE behavior of these six-membered NBN rings was applied to the detection of nitro explosives, achieving excellent sensitivity. In general, this work provides a new viewpoint for synthesizing NBN-fused π-systems and understanding the excited-state motion of luminogens.

Photoswitchable Fluorescent Self-Assembled Metallacycles with High Photostability

In this study, photoswitchable fluorescent supramolecular metallacycles with high fatigue-resistance have been constructed by coordination-driven self-assembly by using bithienylethene with dipyridyl units (BTE) as a coordination donor and a fluorescent di-platinum(II) (Pt-F) as a coordination acceptor. The photo-triggered reversible transformation between the ring-open and ring-closed form of the metallacycles was confirmed by ¹ H NMR, ³¹ P NMR, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. This unique property enabled a reversible noninvasive "off-on" switching of fluorescence through efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). Importantly, the metallacycles remained structurally intact after up to 10 photoswitching cycles. The photoresponsive property and exceptional photostability of the metallacycles posit their potential promising application in optical switching, image storage, and super-resolution microscopy.

Supramolecular Coordination Complexes as Optical Biosensors

In recent years, luminescent supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs), including 2D-metallacycles and 3D-metallacages have been utilised for biomolecular analysis. Unlike small-molecular probes, the dimensions, size, shape, and flexibility of these complexes can easily be tuned by combining ligands designed with particular geometries, symmetries and denticity with metal ions with strong geometrical binding preferences. The well-defined cavities that result, in combination with the other non-covalent interactions that can be programmed into the ligand design, facilitate great selectivity towards guest binding. In this Review we will discuss the application of luminescent metallacycles and cages in the binding and detection of a wide range of biomolecules, such as carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, and biogenic amines. We aim to explore the effect of the structural diversity of SCCs on the extent of biomolecular sensing, expressed in terms of sensitivity, selectivity and detection range.

Self-assembled metallasupramolecular cages towards light harvesting systems for oxidative cyclization

Designing artificial light harvesting systems with the ability to utilize the output energy for fruitful application in aqueous medium is an intriguing topic for the development of clean and sustainable energy. We report here facile synthesis of three prismatic molecular cages as imminent supramolecular optoelectronic materials via two-component coordination-driven self-assembly of a new tetra-imidazole donor (L) in combination with 180°/120° di-platinum(ii) acceptors. Self-assembly of 180° trans-Pt(ii) acceptors A1 and A2 with L leads to the formation of cages Pt4 L 2(1a) and Pt8 L 2(2a) respectively, while 120°-Pt(ii) acceptor A3 with L gives the Pt8 L 2(3a) metallacage. PF6 - analogues (1b, 2b and 3b) of the metallacages possess a high molar extinction coefficient and large Stokes shift. 1b-3b are weakly emissive in dilute solution but showed aggregation induced emission (AIE) in a water/MeCN mixture as well as in the solid state. AIE active 2b and 3b in aqueous (90% water/MeCN mixture) medium act as donors for fabricating artificial light harvesting systems via Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) with organic dye rhodamine-B (RhB) with high energy efficiency and good antenna effect. The metallacages 2b and 3b represent an interesting platform to fabricate new generation supramolecular aqueous light harvesting systems with high antenna effect. Finally, the harvested energy of the LHSs (2b + RhB) and (3b + RhB) was utilized successfully for efficient visible light induced photo-oxidative cross coupling cyclization of N,N-dimethylaniline (4) with a series of N-alkyl/aryl maleimides (5) in aqueous acetonitrile with dramatic enhancement in yields compared to the reactions with RhB or cages alone.

Molecular recognition and sensing of dicarboxylates and dicarboxylic acids

The recognition and detection of dicarboxylic acids and dicarboxylates is of significance for a wide variety of applications, including medical diagnosis, monitoring of health and of environmental contaminants, and in industry. Hence small molecule receptors and sensors for dicarboxylic acids and dicarboxylates have great potential for applications in these fields. This review outlines the challenges faced in the recognition and detection of these species, strategies that have been used to obtain effective and observable interactions with dicarboxylic acids and dicarboxylates, and progress made in this field in the period from 2014 to 2020.

Ring-in-Ring(s) Complexes Exhibiting Tunable Multicolor Photoluminescence

One ring threaded by two other rings to form a non-intertwined ternary ring-in-rings motif is a challenging task in noncovalent synthesis. Constructing multicolor photoluminescence systems with tunable properties is also a fundamental research goal, which can lead to applications in multidimensional biological imaging, visual displays, and encryption materials. Herein, we describe the design and synthesis of binary and ternary ring-in-ring(s) complexes, based on an extended tetracationic cyclophane and cucurbit[8]uril. The formation of these complexes is accompanied by tunable multicolor fluorescence outputs. On mixing equimolar amounts of the cyclophane and cucurbit[8]uril, a 1:1 ring-in-ring complex is formed as a result of hydrophobic interactions associated with a favorable change in entropy. With the addition of another equivalent of cucurbit[8]uril, a 1:2 ring-in-rings complex is formed, facilitated by additional ion-dipole interactions involving the pyridinium units in the cyclophane and the carbonyl groups in cucurbit[8]uril. Because of the narrowing in the energy gaps of the cyclophane within the rigid hydrophobic cavities of cucurbit[8]urils, the binary and ternary ring-in-ring(s) complexes emit green and bright yellow fluorescence, respectively. A series of color-tunable emissions, such as sky blue, cyan, green, and yellow with increased fluorescence lifetimes, can be achieved by simply adding cucurbit[8]uril to an aqueous solution of the cyclophane. Notably, the smaller cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene), which contains the same p-xylylene linkers as the extended tetracationic cyclophane, does not form ring-in-ring(s) complexes with cucurbit[8]uril. The encapsulation of this extended tetracationic cyclophane by both one and two cucurbit[8]urils provides an incentive to design and synthesize more advanced supramolecular systems, as well as opening up a feasible approach toward achieving tunable multicolor photoluminescence with single chromophores.

Flapping Peryleneimide as a Fluorogenic Dye with High Photostability and Strong Visible-Light Absorption

Flapping fluorophores (FLAP) with a flexible 8π ring are rapidly gaining attention as a versatile photofunctional system. Here we report a highly photostable "flapping peryleneimide" with an unprecedented fluorogenic mechanism based on a bent-to-planar conformational change in the S₁ excited state. The S₁ planarization induces an electronic configurational switch, almost quenching the inherent fluorescence (FL) of the peryleneimide moieties. However, the FL quantum yield is remarkably improved with a prolonged lifetime upon a slight environmental change. This fluorogenic function is realized by sensitive π-conjugation design, as a more π-expanded analogue does not show the planarization dynamics. With strong visible-light absorption, the FL lifetime response synchronized with the flexible flapping motion is useful for the latest optical techniques such as FL lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM).

The endeavor of vibration-induced emission (VIE) for dynamic emissions

Organic chromophores with large Stokes shifts and dual emissions are fascinating because of their fundamental and applied interest. Vibration-induced emission (VIE) refers to a tunable multiple fluorescence exhibited by saddle-shaped N,N'-disubstituted-dihydribenzo[a,c]phenazines (DHPs), which involves photo-induced configuration vibrations from bent to planar form along the N-N axis. VIE-active molecules show intrinsic long-wavelength emissions in the unconstrained state (planar state) but bright short-wavelength emissions in the constrained state (bent state). The emission response for VIE-active luminogens is highly sensitive to steric hindrance encountered during the planarization process such that a tiny structural variation can induce an evident change in fluorescence. This can often be achieved by tuning the intensity ratio of short- and long-wavelength bands. In some special cases, the alterations in the emission wavelength of VIE fluorophores can be achieved step by step by harnessing the degree of bending angle motion in the excited state. In this perspective, we summarize the latest progress in the field of VIE research. New bent heterocyclic structures, as novel types of VIE molecules, are being developed, and the general features of the chemical structures are also being proposed. Technologically, novel emission color-tuning approaches and VIE-based probes for visualizing biological activity are presented to demonstrate how the dynamic VIE effect can be exploited for cutting-edge applications.

Recent developments in the construction and applications of platinum-based metallacycles and metallacages via coordination

Coordination-driven suprastructures have attracted much interest due to their unique properties. Among these structures, platinum-based architectures have been broadly studied due to their facile preparation. The resultant two- or three-dimensional (2D or 3D) systems have many advantages over their precursors, such as improved emission tuning, sensitivity as sensors, and capture and release of guests, and they have been applied in biomedical diagnosis as well as in catalysis. Herein, we review the recent results related to platinum-based coordination-driven self-assembly (CDSA), and the text is organized to emphasizes both the synthesis of new metallacycles and metallacages and their various applications.

A cyclic bis[2]catenane metallacage

Catenated cages represent chemistry’s challenging synthetic targets because a three-dimensional assembly is necessary for their formation. Herein, a cyclic bis[2]catenane is constructed through the coordination-driven self-assembly of the interlocked bis-metallacage, by the 90° Pt(II) heteroligation of the endo-functionalized double-bridged tweezer bearing pyridyl moieties and the tetra-carboxylated linker. NMR spectrometry, X-ray crystallography and mass spectrometry confirm the formation of a cyclic bis[2]catenane with “∞”-shaped topology via a 14-component self-assembly. Particularly, reversibly responsive transformation between the bis[2]catenane and the bis-metallacage can be realized by guest exchange, concentration effect and solvent effect. This work represents a novel example of a cyclic cage-based [2]catenane oligomer.

Catenated cages are challenging synthetic targets in chemistry. Here, the authors employ a multi-component coordination strategy using a Pt(II) heteroligation to construct a cyclic bis[2]catenane metallacage, which could be reversibly transformed between the catenated structure and the bis-metallacage.

Modular synthesis of (C-10 to C-13)-substituted-9,14-diaryl-9,14-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazines via a subsequent Buchwald-Hartwig amination and C-H amination strategy

Herein, we report a modular synthetic approach of (C-10 to C-13)-substituted 9,14-diaryl-9,14-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine derivatives. This synthetic route enables the aromatic substitution in a predictable and programmed manner to obtain products in synthetically useful isolated yield.

Color-tunable single-fluorophore supramolecular system with assembly-encoded emission

Regulating the fluorescent properties of organic small molecules in a controlled and dynamic manner has been a fundamental research goal. Although several strategies have been exploited, realizing multi-color molecular emission from a single fluorophore remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrate an emissive system by combining pyrene fluorophore and acylhydrazone units, which can generate multi-color switchable fluorescent emissions at different assembled states. Two kinds of supramolecular tools, amphiphilic self-assembly and γ-cyclodextrin mediated host-guest recognition, are used to manipulate the intermolecular aromatic stacking distances, resulting in the tunable fluorescent emission ranging from blue to yellow, including a pure white-light emission. Moreover, an external chemical signal, amylase, is introduced to control the assembly states of the system on a time scale, generating a distinct dynamic emission system. The dynamic properties of this multi-color fluorescent system can be also enabled in a hydrogel network, exhibiting a promising potential for intelligent fluorescent materials.
